How to protect tax stamps and improve tax collection Tax stamps are used on a wide array of consumer goods to indicate that taxes have been paid, to provide supply chain visibility or to authenticate products. Agfa Graphics’ design and authentication software effectively protects products against counterfeiting and improves tax collection. Tax stamps, also called fiscal stamps, excise stamps, duty stamps, tax seals or banderoles are applied by more than 80 countries in the world on tobacco and alcohol, but some countries extended their use to soft drinks or luxury foods too. The main goals of a tax stamp are to indicate that tax has been paid, provide supply chain visibility and product authentication. Tax stamps come both

as heat transfer and as self-adhesive applications, but the latter ones are being used increasingly, as they can carry more security elements and track and trace codes. Given the inherent value of a tax stamp, the threats posed by fraudsters are now as broad as they are serious. Basic labels with a very limited amount of security features, such as microtext, guilloches, UV fluorescent inks or security fibres

only give basic protection against smallscale smugglers, and will not hold back criminal organisations. In response, Agfa Graphics developed solutions to protect tax stamps from counterfeiting and to improve tax collection strategies. Our approach is based on two applications that perfectly integrate with the production methods commonly used to create tax stamps

Arziro Design for the creation of security designs Arziro Authenticate for authentication and pedigree purposes The goal is to create sophisticated tax stamps with a complex security design that uses security rasters, serialisation and secure track-and-trace codes with a true digital authentication pattern. How to create a secure tax stamp No security document is immune for attacks and a single feature can never provide all the security needed. The real answer lies in choosing the right number of different elements and combine them. The majority of tax stamps are produced on security paper, most of them using security fibres or security dots. The three main print processes for tax stamps are offset, intaglio and inkjet printing for numbering and encoding. Some tax stamps are printed using higher resolution digital printers with special inks. In addition, silkscreen and gravure printing can be used to apply color-shifting inks. Depending on the printing technique,

the substrate, the ink and the resolution of the prepress equipment a security design is created. These security elements can be created using Arziro Design, a state-of-the-art plug-in for Adobe Illustrator Mac and PC featuring 11 security design modules, two design production modules, and an anti-copy module. The example below illustrates some of the possibilities of Arziro Design. Special Rasters are an excellent protection mechanism as they offer the possibility to rasterize images by creating raster designs consisting of thousands of different, small objects. It is also good practice to include the year or price-related elements in the special raster design. This is very easy to accomplish with Arziro, but a burden for counterfeiters. The Arziro Authenticate SaaS solution generates codes that differ from ordinary ones as they include a copyproof graphic. By scanning these codes with an open or dedicated smartphone app, inspectors and law enforcement officers immediately receive feedback on authenticity. If authentication is

enabled for everyone, crowd-sourced identification is also possible. With every scan, Arziro Authenticate collects data. Via a dedicated dashboard, these data provide valuable insights to government agencies, law enforcement agencies or investigative services and help them thwart counterfeiting and contrabanding, as well as perfect inspection strategies. Via custom filters, scans can be viewed by timestamp, production batch or product type. A detailed map with the locations of all individual scans is available too. Moreover, automated alerts can be generated in the case of scanned counterfeits and inconsistent scanning activities. These data can also be securely exchanged with external solutions such as supply chain management (SCM) software, data visualization systems, tax management systems and more. Hosted by Agfa Graphics’ certified private and secure cloud, Arziro Authenticate relies on the same technology and knowledge that has been used for many years for medical and military purposes.

14 Wim Swiggers, Robert James and Phee Boon Eow. The annual awards competition was founded to recognise outstanding achievements in the print and packaging industries across Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, the competition awards excellent print and packaging products with the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. As per competition rules, if the judges deem that none of the entries were able to fulfil the high standards required, then there will be no winners for that category. Now in its 13th year, the Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. The Asian Packaging Conference celebrated its 16th year of organising the Packaging Excellence Awards. The Asian Packaging Excellence Awards get a new lease of life this year with additional categories. The new categories include Mock-ups/ Samples, Structural Design, Concept/ Graphic Design. Fuji Xerox launches monochrome production printers Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd announced today the expansion of its monochrome high-speed production printer line-up, with the launch of the B9136, B9125, B9110, and B9100 Copier/Printers (hereafter, the B9 series) which will be rolled out in phases in the Asia-Pacific region.

This launch comes as a response to the growing and diverse monochrome printing needs in the office, graphic arts and critical printing operations market segments. While executing critical jobs that require massive amounts of data to be printed within a short period, printers need to operate reliably and yield high productivity. Looking at the current printing industry, Fuji Xerox noted that, despite the expansive use of color printing, the demand for monochrome printing is still strong — especially among producers of manuals, statements, books and comics. “Building on the success of its predecessor, which enjoyed long-term consumer trust and top market share for five consecutive years, the newly launched B9 series offers noteworthy enhancements in productivity, reliability, and durability,” said Steve Ford, general manager, production sales and marketing, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “We expect to see strong adoption of this series in Asia Pacific as markets in our region are witnessing robust growth in the key segments for which

these printers are designed.” High productivity and stability demanded in production printers For both single-sided and duplex printing, the B9 series can achieve continuous printing speeds of up to 136 pages per minute (ppm). This high level of productivity is enabled by pairing Fuji Xerox’s very own EA-Eco LGK toner, which has an excellent lowtemperature fusing capability, with the B9 series’ ability to administer a stable supply of heat in order to apply the toner efficiently onto the paper — even when printing at high speeds.

Using tiny granules measuring 6.5 μm, the EA-Eco LGK toner enables an elegant reproduction of gradations in photos and images, consistent halftones and clear printing of small letters. The B9 series also offers a selection of various, different screen settings*5 to ensure high quality printing each time. This includes the Stochastic (or FM) Screen which efficiently aids in moiré reduction, the new Edge Enhancement for fixing jagged edges of thin lines/ text outlines, and the Adjust Invert Text/Line Weight setting, which helps improve the visibility of text and lines. In-house developed print server with high resolution and integrated workflow system With a proven track record amongst production colour printers, Fuji Xerox’s in-house developed controller, the GX Print Server, is now also being utilized in monochrome production printers for the first time ever. The GX Print Server, combined with the improvements made to the product’s hardware, delivers high-quality images and high raster image processing (RIP) speeds of 600 x 600 dpi at eight bit (256 graduation levels).

The paper transport system is designed with no sharp curves to ensure smooth paper motion and also a vertically placed paper inversion mechanism for duplex printing so that paper can be sent through at high speeds while minimizing paper jams.

Fuji Xerox’s original HQ Digital Screen Technology (MACS) then also helps create a high-definition, smooth screen image of 2,400 x 2,400 dpi. These data processing technologies all work in tandem to help deliver top quality printing results.

Higher-quality prints achieved with greater ease In order to achieve high resolution printouts of 2,400 x 2,400 dots per inch (dpi) while printing at quick speeds, a VCSEL is used as the light source for the ROS – which functions just like the heart of the printer.

The B9 series supports the JDF*6 standards of the printing industry and by connecting the printer with the integrated workflow system for printing operations, it enables the development of a hybrid workflow that utilises both offset printers and digital printers cohesively.

“Pearson is undergoing a digital transformation to become a simpler, more efficient business and our UK book supply chain is a key part of this,” said Stephen Jones, Pearson Director of Global Direct Procurement. “We are moving from a ‘print to warehouse’ to a ‘print to order, direct to consumer’ model. Partnering with our print providers, HP Piazza will support us in managing our print workflow and optimizing our book supply chain to help reduce costs and better serve our customers.”

Optimized book content is stored in the Piazza Content Repository.

Piazza is the only “all-in-one” view and “control center” for publishers Bridging the worlds of book publishing and digital book printing, the Piazza platform focuses on the needs of publishers in a world where short-run digital production is an everyday reality. With Piazza publishers can control, monetize, and secure their valuable content, while growing their revenues. 5th drupa Global Trends mood in the printing ind Clear pattern of improvement demonstrable for most but not all markets and regions since 2013 Strategic challenges for print mean that clear investment strategies are recognized as best way forward. Printers and suppliers from the majority of market sectors reported growing confidence in their companies’ economic performance. The opportunity was taken this year to track patterns of performance over the years. Packaging remains the most buoyant market and there has been a steady improvement in confidence over the five years amongst Commercial printers. Functional printers were following a similar positive story but there was a puzzling increase in uncertainty this year for both printers and suppliers to this market. Publishing printers probably face the most challenging strategic changes and there is a decline

in assurance this year, despite the reducing threat from E-books. Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa, Messe Duesseldorf, commented, “The report indicates that print can be optimistic about the future. After the double blow of the 2008 global recession and the consumer shift to digital communications, printers and suppliers are taking full advantage of the slow but clear global economic revival and finding new ways to exploit emerging technologies so as to place print as a central tool for consumers.”

Recruited from senior managers who visited drupa in 2016, over 700 printers and almost 250 suppliers participated in the survey run by Printfuture (UK) and Wissler & Partner (CH). Richard Gray, Operations Director at Printfuture, states, “Both printers and suppliers clearly understand the strategic challenges that print faces. However there is increasing confidence in a strong future for printers in most markets and regions, as long as they analyse their target markets carefully and make suitable innovations to meet the future needs of their clients’ customers.”

Report reflects positive ustry

Challenges for some regions but strong growth in suppliers’ core sales In regional terms again the picture is positive in general but with clear exceptions. North America has been consistently the strongest region over time, although Europe has shown steadily increasing confidence. Sadly Africa and the Middle East see clear decline in confidence over time. Globally this is the fourth year of increasing confidence reported by suppliers. What is striking this year is the surge in sales of core equipment/ software/materials (+29% net balance). Indeed all supplier revenue streams showed their best ever net positive balance.

Printers globally report that the squeeze on prices and margins continues and is coped with best by ever increasing utilization and hence revenues, whilst holding costs as steady as possible. There is evidence that over time the squeeze on prices and margins is somewhat lessening globally. However the regional picture is far more patchy. For example whilst North America reported some increase in prices, Australia/Oceania reported a clear drop in pricing. Equally Packaging prices are holding up globally whilst Publishing and to a lesser degree Commercial prices continue to decline. Digital print grows but conventional print still dominates The transition to digital print continues

but slowly, with Functional printers now largely dependent on digital print but few packaging printers reporting significant digital sales as yet. (60% of Functional printers report more that 50% of turnover is digital, whilst just 12% of packaging printers report more than 25% of turnover is digital.) It is striking to report that only 27% of all printer participants operate a Web to Print /Storefront installation, up just 2% from 2014. Globally printers were more willing to invest: 42 percent reported an increase in capital expenditure compared to the previous year while 9 percent reported a decline – a positive net balance of 33 percent. North America performed best with a net balance increase of 51 percent while Australia/Oceania lagged farthest behind with a net increase of only 18 percent. Not surprisingly Packaging printers reported the biggest positive net balance at +45%, Functional at +42%, Commercial at +30% and Publishing at +20%. Finishing is the most popular focus for investment for the second year running, followed by print technology and then prepress/workflow/MIS. Plans for print investment in 2018 depend on the market sector, with

Flexo the most popular choice in Packaging, followed by Sheetfed offset. In Commercial it is Digital toner cutsheet colour that leads followed closely by Sheetfed offset and Digital inkjet wide-format. In Publishing it is

Sheetfed offset that leads and Digital toner cutsheet colour in second. While in Functional, it is Digital toner cutsheet colour that leads and Digital inkjet wide-format in second.

Using XEIKON power to amazing wallpaper International manufacturer of photo and digital papers uses trade show walls on its FESPA stand to show just what the Xeikon Wall Decoration Suite can do Demonstrating the immensely large variety in digital printing was the focus for this year's FESPA in Berlin for the Felix Schoeller Group headquartered in Osnabrück. Brightly coloured trade fair walls printed on wallpaper material are the key focus in the 91 m2 space in Hall 2.1, Stand C52, proving to be a real eyecatcher for visitors. These included two sophisticated wall motifs printed on Felix Schoeller's STYLine nonwoven wallpapers using the Xeikon Wall Decoration Suite. "For Xeikon digital printing, we chose graphic 3D geometry and a golden metallic wallpaper that provides the ideal foil for toner digital printing in terms of look, haptics and feel. Our experience has shown that the Xeikon process is a commercially viable total solution for high volumes thanks to its print quality, high output, reliability and integrated finishing modules", says Michael Avermann, Product Manager for Digital Wallpaper at Felix Schoeller. “The high opacity of the additional white ink on the metallic background of the wallpaper and use of the painting module incorporated in the Wall Decoration Suite bring uniformity to the appearance and highlights the 3D motif. The printed greyish white fibres look almost lifelike.” Digitally printed wallpaper for a booming market Felix Schoeller's STYLine nonwoven wallpapers have been specially developed for state-of-the-art digital printing technologies. In their uncoated

version, STYLine Hamburg, they are ideal for printing with dry toner systems from Xeikon. They guarantee excellent and homogeneous printing results with a soft and appealing matt surface. They are PVC-free and simultaneously meet the highest requirements for fire protection. Another advantage is the excellent dry strippability, meaning that frequent wallpaper changes can be carried out in a matter of minutes for living rooms and children's rooms, restaurants, bars, and hotels, as well as at exhibition stands and in corporate buildings.

Xeikon recently exhibited the CX500 Wall Decoration Suite at the Heimtextil trade show with great success. The Suite features maximum production capacity with a maximum printing speed of up to 900 m²/hour. This means it meets the market requirements for producing wall decoration in high volumes. The Wall Decoration Suite from Xeikon includes a specially developed wallpaper rewinder with cutter and remover to produce fully finished wallpaper rolls in one streamlined operation. A painting module is also available as an option.

New measurement and control sheetfed offset presses • Inline colour measurement, production monitoring or PDF comparison with the same basic system • Maximum operating and display function integration for the user • Comprehensive new report functions and options With QualiTronic NextGeneration, Koenig & Bauer is launching a revolutionary package of innovations for its inline measuring systems on Rapida sheetfed offset presses. QualiTronic NextGeneration provides a foundation for the restructuring of all inline measurement functions and a platform for further developments in the future. As already successfully implemented with regard to mechanical press components and software, a modular principle enables identical system hardware to be used for a variety of applications. Users can now combine • QualiTronic ColorControl (inline colour measurement and control) with

Outwardly, the QualiTronic NextGeneration cameras are hardly distinguishable from their predecessors.

• QualiTronic PrintCheck (production monitoring) • or QualiTronic PDFCheck (sheet inspection and PDF comparison) without needing to worry about the hardware configuration. QualiTronic NextGeneration – One basic system The fundamental benefit of using the same hardware to accomplish several tasks, compared to two or more separate systems, is that it is only necessary to invest in one basic system. Subsequently, there is only one system to be maintained. Typically, installation space available on the press is limited. If a colour measuring system is installed in a particular printing unit, for example, it is not possible to integrate an additional inspection system. With QualiTronic NextGeneration, the configuration limitations which are unavoidable when using several separate systems have been overcome. The QualiTronic NextGeneration hardware can be installed at any position on the press. Colour measurement and inspection can thus both be implemented at the same location. QualiTronic NextGeneration – New operating concept QualiTronic NextGeneration also introduces a completely new operating concept. The majority of the input forms and displays can be found at the same place as for all other functions of the press – directly on the touchscreen monitor of the ErgoTronic console. Through optimising the layout of the operating elements and significantly reducing the number of operating steps required to achieve a given task,

work on the press has become even more intuitive. Positive effects reported by users include considerably reduced training and familiarisation periods, the exclusion of operating errors, and the user-friendly visualisation of measured values. Important functions and displays can be called up with just two taps on the touchscreen monitor. Simple and clear graphic elements, in conjunction with an absolute minimum of text, facilitate fast and reliable operation. QualiTronic ColorControl QualiTronic ColorControl is the basic module of QualiTronic NextGeneration and serves to measure and control colour in an inline process. As already with the previous generation, the camera scans the entire area of every single sheet. The same proven fast inline colour regulation system then provides for especially rapid colour optimisation to help minimise the makeready time between two print jobs. Many details have been further accelerated in the new version and brought into line with the demands of industrial print production. Functions such as the definition of the colour bars, job-specific data inputs and other previously manual processes have been eliminated. They now run in the background without operator intervention. The new measured value displays, and the reduction of these displays to simple graphic elements, are revolutionary. For the first time, Koenig & Bauer now presents the measured values vertically for the whole press, i.e. in a single view for all printing units.

technology for Koenig & Bauer QualiTronic PrintCheck The option QualiTronic PrintCheck expands QualiTronic ColorControl by adding powerful sheet inspection functionality. With this unique system, colour measurement can be combined with production monitoring. Here, too, a new operating philosophy has been implemented. In the past, many inspection systems remained the domain of just a few experts due to their complicated settings and time-consuming operating steps. The new inspection system QualiTronic PrintCheck, by contrast, is readily accessible to every printer, not least because it requires no operator intervention at all. From start to finish of a print job, the system functions completely autonomously. Job data is imported in the background, and the inspection parameters – once a science in themselves – are determined automatically. QualiTronic PrintCheck even identifies the correct time at which to start production monitoring itself. At the end of the job, finally, a simple job report is saved automatically as a PDF file, again without further inputs on the part of the operator. The makeready time for this system is thus effectively zero. QualiTronic PDFCheck The alternative QualiTronic PDFCheck incorporates two new functions to complement QualiTronic ColorControl – sheet inspection and comparison of the printed sheet against a prepress PDF, i.e. the customer data. This function is especially interesting for Internet printers with their frequent job changes, as well as for production with gang formes. Timely comparisons enable errors on the sheet to be detected before actual production commences. In the past, separate systems offering such functions were usually aimed at users working in security printing or for

QualiTronic ColorControl – a new operating menu on the touchscreen monitor, with visualisation of all colour measurement values Under the new operating concept, the console monitor is also used for the screen displays of the measuring and control systems

pharmaceuticals branch. QualiTronic PDFCheck, on the other hand, is intended to support also commercial and Internet printers. A user-friendly interface and a host of practical functions assist operators in their daily work. The PDF comparison starts automatically, and it is only when QualiTronic PDFCheck detects any deviations that the operator is called upon to react. Comprehensive new report functions and options Alongside these major innovations, the system offers a series of new report functions and options. QualiTronic ColorControl, for example, can be

expanded with the following functions: • Various colour measurement reports • Inline register measurement and control • Measurement using significantly narrower colour bars; in medium format, the minimum height for the colour bars is just 3 mm QualiTronic PDFCheck can be expanded with: • SheetIdent for sheet numbering • or the new PileView function to enable virtual assessment of the good and waste sheets within a printed pile. The whole range of measuring and control systems can be ordered and supplied with immediate effect.

Functional and Industrial Printing Market to Grow by Almost 50 Percent Industrial and functional printing applications are assumed to grow to a market value of $114.8 billion by 2022. These numbers can be found in ‚The Future of Functional and Industrial Print to 2022‘ by Smithers Pira. The expected growing sectors are for example décor and laminates, ceramics, electronics and many more, all using specialist analog methods and inkjet. 3D printing alone is expected to grow from $1.73 to $5.66 billion by 2023. ‘Suppliers have developed new equipment that widens the applications, with new inks, coatings, and functional fluids’ states Sean Smyth, who is responsible for management and development of Smither Pira’s printing consulting operations. New equipment of suppliers, as well as novel capabilities in electronics and biomedical, are the main reason for the increasing numbers. Mainly, digital methods seem to play an important role, as new inkjet inks and fluids open many new opportunities. Asia as Big Player in Industrial Printing

Even though industrial printing takes place all over the world, Asia can be identified as the largest region showing a strong concentration on manufacturing. This includes printing companies but also large electronic companies that use printing as a part of their manufacturing processes. On the other hand, in regions such as North America and Western Europe, new technologies are being developed. In some cases, as for 3D additive printing, for instance, not only a single manufacturing process but rather the entire supply chain is affected by the change. The routes to market for printing are very complex and fragmented. Established suppliers may either be manufacturers, or part of a wider supply chain. The degree of efficiency of a printing process demanded by a company usually depends on the

significance of the printing process for the final product. Routes to market are being further developed, for print suppliers and equipment manufacturers alike. In contrast to the growth of most industrial functional print markets, the commercial graphics and publication print sector experiences a significant decrease in demand for print. This fall is mainly due to alternative markets which established equipment and consumable suppliers are seeking. What are your thoughts on the development of functional and industrial printing? How have you been experiencing new equipment or applications in the field of electronics or biomedical printing applications? Leave us a comment in the section below.

Short-Run & Variable Printing The Henderson Brewing Company teamed up with Lorpon Labels to take their bottle labels to the next level, with variable printing. Variable data printing, also known as variable information printing, is very popular within the packaging industry, especially for brands, that want to address the customer personally. This innovative print method combines several information like names, images and symbols in one print run. Therefore, you can create many different designs without stopping or slowing down the print process. The award-winning Henderson Brewing Company teamed up with the creative minds at Lorpon Labels to use this technology to take their labels to the next level. Custom-Made Labels Through Variable Printing As Henderson has a unique beer series, called “The Ides of …”, which features an one-of-a-kind beer every month, Lorpons idea to promote this line with variable content convinced them straight away. “I knew the variable content print concept for Henderson’s labels was a natural evolution of their unique brews. I believed it would be a great brand enhancement for their monthly Ides series,” says Jeff Sommer, Lorpon’s vice president of business development. For the Ides of April, for example, they teamed up with the Canadian publishing company House of Anansi Press to create a series of labels that

featured book covers of famous Canadian writers. Lorpons idea was to get the brand beyond consumption, as the bottles came not only with beautiful labels but became a collector item. How to Overcome The Challenges of Variable Printing But does variable Printing have a real benefit for the brand? Lorpon and Henderson discussed this in the very first meetings and their answer was yes. It is key to have the right team in place, as you need the perfect mix of creative artists and production and print experts, to achieve good variable printing results. This is as important as having the right printing partner with the specialized technology for this kind of printing. For this reason, Lorpon has a HP Indigo WS6800 press, which was specifically built for variable. The Indigo provides customers with best print quality, registration and the largest choice of substrates. Coca Cola, for example, used it for their “Share a Coke” and “One of a Kind”campaigns. Furthermore, next to the best hardware, the best software is needed, in that case the Esko software suite, leader in prepress graphics software for the label and packaging industry. Getting the Right Ink, Paper, and Colour The first run quantities were very

small. Lorpon tried different materials for colour and feel, as these features are just as important as the look. The final labels of Henderson are textured, which gives the customers a feel of quality, just as for wine bottles. The team tested multiple suppliers of inks, varnishes and materials as well as different application methods to get the best possible results. They also worked with different press platforms, to identify the best creation process. Furthermore, the print experts at Lorpon created a custom colour palette, based on Henderson’s corporate design, on the HP Indigo WS6800. As the brand colours are outside the traditional CMYK range, they used advanced colour control and profiling software from HP and Esko, to get the desired PMS spot colours. Variable Content: Three Advices from an Expert Based on this experience, Sommer has three essential advices for brands working with variable printing: 1. To work with experts with high experience in this sector. 2. To get all partners as creatives, printers and clients involved directly from the beginning. 3. To keep the scope of the project in check right after the start.

HP Unveils Rigid Latex Printing Technology The new technology will enable latex printing on multiple surfaces, and includes breakthrough HP White Latex Ink HP Inc. announced the HP Latex R Series, the first, true hybrid latex technology that merges HP’s renowned flexible printing capabilities into rigid printing. The HP Latex R Series brings the most vibrant colours into the rigid printing world, and pioneers white ink capabilities with the introduction of HP Latex White Ink. The HP Latex R series brings unparalleled speed and quality to a wide range of rigid materials, such as foamboards, foam PVC, cardboard, fluted polypropylene, solid plastics, aluminum, wood and glass among others. Unlike UV printing technology, which creates a thick layer of ink that completely covers the material, HP’s water-based Latex Inks preserve the look and feel of the media, and deliver odourless prints that are both safe for the environment and the printer operator. “With the new HP Latex Rigid Technology, our customers can expand

their offering into new, high-value applications while also opening fresh creative ideas and concepts for sign and display that provide their users greater value,” said Michael Boyle, vice president, graphics solutions business – Asia Pacific and Japan, HP Inc.
Tackling one of the industry’s most pervasive limitations in printing, HP’s White Latex Ink has an innovative

system that recirculates the white ink to avoid settling. For the first time, HP’s innovative White Latex Ink delivers glossy, high-quality “true white” that doesn’t yellow over time like traditional UV-based white ink does. “White ink has been a consistent problem for the industry. Traditionally it uses bigger and heavier pigment particles that frequently clog printheads, or the opaque mixture becomes separated and settles to the bottom of the ink reservoir. Until now, physically shaking the reservoirs often has been the necessary solution,” said Thom Brown, Chief Inkologist at HP. “Through HP’s investment in innovation around chemistry and engineering, the white ink solution with the HP Latex R Series is an industry breakthrough.” The HP Latex R Series will be available during Q3 of 2018, with a full industry debut occurring in May at FESPA in Berlin, Germany

48 Together with the local KBA-Asia Pacific service team, she will support KBA-Flexotecnica with developing their market share in this region. Carina Shia has worked in the print industry for around 20 years and has collected a wealth of experience in pre-press gravure printing while working for a renowned gravure cylinder manufacturer. Carina Shia has already sold a second flexo press to Malaysia within a short period of time, thanks to her extensive know-how. CGS enhances Global Marketing Team Dr. Isabel Bracker joins as new manager communications and social media. CGS Publishing Technologies International GmbH has expanded its global marketing team with Dr. Isabel Bracker in the capacity of Manager Communications and Social Media. Isabel Bracker joined the company on 1st April and will be reporting to Bernd Rückert, Product Marketing Manager, and Andreas Kämmerer, Chief Operating Officer. “We are delighted to welcome Isabel into the CGS team and we are sure CGS will benefit from her experience in journalism and her broad expertise in communications,” said Kämmerer. In her previous positions she worked as research associate and lecturer at University Eichstaett-Ingolstadt School of Journalism as well as with media companies like Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Bracker read Online Journalism and Public Relations at Darmstadt University of Applied Science and holds a Ph.D. in communication science from University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt.

“With Carina’s many years of experience in flexible packaging, her enthusiasm for print finishing and her strong network in this region, I am certain that she will help us attain our ambitious goals in Asia,” said Andreas Friedrich, managing director KBA Asia-Pacific. Malaysia’s Tomypak chooses EVO XD Tomypak Flexible Packaging Sdn Bhd has opted for an EVO XD and has subsequently expanded its product portfolio in flexo print. The press is scheduled to be delivered in the third quarter of 2018. The purchase followed an extensive selection process, largely managed by new sales manager for KBA-Asia Pacific, Carina Shia. Tomypak Flexible Packaging Sdn Bhd was founded in 1979 and is now one of Malaysia’s leading converters for flexible packaging. The company was first listed on the Malaysia Stock Exchange in 1996. Over 400 employees specialise in the production and converting of flexible packaging

for a raft of prominent customers. The company solely operated gravure presses until now. The rise of flexo printing Flexo printing has a global growth rate of four to five per cent, and it is even higher in some regions. Improved print quality, based on mature prepress and press technology, plays a key role. “We have a cutting-edge and extensive portfolio especially for our customers active in the growing packaging market. Together with our partners in the industry and our product range, I am certain that I will be able to win over many customers with this technology,” said Shia. Moreover, it is a key advantage that flexo printing inks contain a lot less solvents than gravure especially seeing as environmental protection is slowly gathering speed in many regions. This is an important factor not just for the environment, but also for the press operators.

Cost-effective customization Beyond integrating perfectly within an industrial or print shop environment, the Massivit 1800 and 1500 address a growing demand for greater customization in traditional signage and displays. This includes attentiongrabbing channel lettering along with unique soft signage structures. Traditional manufacturing methods often require a lengthy turnaround time, mostly dedicated to manual labour, to produce metal applications and, should iterations be required, this could often escalate the manufacturing costs. With Massivit 3D’s solutions offering geometric freedom, sign businesses can transform standard channel lettering or soft signage into complex structures in a fraction of the time and cost compared to traditional methods. distribution partner in Thailand. The new partnership is initially for the distribution of EFI Wide Format and VUTEk printers for the signage and graphics space. “We are excited about our new relationship with a market leader like EFI, particularly in growing our business in Thailand’s expanding superwideformat printing market,” said Suroj Lamsam, president, Loxley Public Company Limited. “We look forward to introducing EFI’s advanced technologies and software capabilities to our customers as they look for greater efficiencies and seek new growth segments.” Established for almost 80 years, Loxley has grown from exporting Thailand’s agricultural products, such as rice and timber, to paving the way in adopting leading-edge technology. “Thailand is a very important market for EFI in the Asia Pacific region, and partnering with an organisation with the standing of Loxley is going to allow us a greater reach to customers,” said EFI Asia Pacific Director Andy Yarrow. EFI’s complete inkjet portfolio, which in addition to some of the industry’s leading LED and UV inkjet wide-and superwide-format production systems also includes industrial digital textile and corrugated board printers as well as world-class printers for the decoration of ceramic tiles, wood and other building materials, gives customers profitable opportunities for the “Imaging of Things,” delivering greater product customisation and appeal in everything from signage and packag-

Fuji Xerox Singapore has been commended by the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources for its industry-leading sustainability efforts in the areas of waste management and recycling at its two-day biannual business conference, DocuWorld March 2018, held on 22 March, at Raffles City Convention Centre. With Singapore designating 2018 as the Year of Climate Action in line with the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Fuji Xerox took the opportunity to launch its sustainability report in order to reaffirm its commitment to Climate Action. The event was inaugurated by Guestof-Honor, Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources for Singapore. Mr. Masagos delivered the event’s opening keynote to shed light on Singapore’s Year of Climate Action, Fuji Xerox’s initiatives to support sustainable development in the island nation, and how SMEs are well poised to make the transition to a low carbon economy. One of the key aims for this year’s event is to assist SMEs in their transition towards becoming more sustainable in their operations. This message was delivered through various seminars spread across the two-day run, and a Project Eco-Office workshop that was held in collaboration with the Singapore Environment Council. “The rapid advancement of technology has made sustainable solutions available for many of our climate change challenges we face today.,” said Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. “Through this DocuWorld business conference, I hope that SME owners will not only be exposed to the technological solutions and initiatives,

which will make their organisation greener while bringing about cost savings, but also convince you of the business case for sustainability. How fast SMEs can make the transition towards a low-carbon economy will depend on how fast SMEs are willing to invest and change for this future.” Fuji Xerox has been consistently reinforcing its commitment to implementing environmental initiatives and it continues to promote the sustainability mindset as part the company’s overall success matrix. Fuji Xerox has long set its sights on an ambitious zero landfill policy — a target the company gets closer to achieving, each year. It has integrated recycling practices throughout its value chain to produce zero waste and minimise pollution by reusing as many used parts as possible, resulting in a remarkable, consistent recycling rate of 99.5%. In 2016, 600 tons of material was put through the company’s eco-manufacturing centres and 99.5% of it was successfully recycled, giving the material an additional 10 years in life span. It is these best practices that Fuji Xerox hopes to share with other organisations, in the hopes that businesses bring about a significant reduction in their carbon footprints, as one cohesive unit driving change in Singapore. “Fuji Xerox DocuWorld is one of the premier business and technology conferences in Singapore, and typically sees up to 700 attendees from the local business community,” said Sara Cheng, Chief Executive Officer, Fuji Xerox Singapore.

Terms of the agreement remain confidential. "We are excited and pleased with our agreement with Canon, which validates the value of our technology," said Len Lauer, CEO of Memjet. "This agreement showcases the breadth and strength of our intellectual property portfolio of patents. We will continue to focus on our leadership position in the single pass digital inkjet market through our technology innovation that provides unmatched speed, simplicity and affordability." HP ships out first HP PageWide C500 to Europe Smurfit Kappa is installing the industrial-scale HP PageWide C500 digital press for corrugated printing which will provide greater customisation and flexibility for customers. The press will be installed in Smurfit Kappa’s Interwell plant in Austria. The installation will occur in April and will support Smurfit Kappa’s extensive customer base in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector by strengthening the power of their brands in an increasingly competitive, consumer-focused world.

HP first announced the pending installation of PageWide C500 to a European company in February 2018. The HP PageWide C500 Press, which will be the first commercial HP single pass press in Europe, is HP’s most technologically advanced digital press for corrugated application. With a fully integrated stack-to-stack workflow, the press combines digital simplicity with off-set replaceable print quality on both coated and uncoated paper. The cutting-edge technology will provide brand owners with customised packaging solutions that can drive sales across both online and traditional sales channels. Smurfit Kappa is a European converter specialising in shelf-ready and eCommerce packaging development. The graphic flexibility and quality of the new HP PageWide C500 Press will further enhance the company’s service to drive brand recognition and provide fit-for-purpose packaging. Furthermore, the HP water-based inks facilitate printing on both primary and secondary food packaging without an additional barrier which can comply with even the most stringent global food safety regulations. Speaking about the investment Saverio Mayer, Smurfit Kappa CEO of Europe, said: “This new press is the perfect solution for our Interwell plant. It comes after a successful collaboration between Smurfit Kappa and HP. We

are both early adopters in our respective industries and constantly strive to provide pioneering, market-leading solutions for our customers.” “We are delighted that Smurfit Kappa will be the first in Europe to install the C500 Press which showcases brand new technology and offers all the flexibility of digital printing. This press is going to fundamentally change the corrugated industry by digitalising it,” said Cristóbal Macedo, Director, EMEA Corrugated Business Director, HP Inc.
