GREG KAMANSKY

(10) and FG percentage (50.4). The Broncos finished the season as the top defensive scoring unit in the country, allowing 56.2 points a game.

Head Coach 15th Season

CPP played at its best during the NCAA run. It shot more than 50 percent from the field in each of its six NCAA games and capped that run with a 65-53 victory over No. 2 Indiana, Pa. in the title game played in Springfield, Mass. -- the birthplace of the game. CPP became the first unranked team in 31 years to win the title crown and only the seventh program in history to win a national title the year after finishing second.

Hard work, dedication and talent are the blueprint for success. All of those qualities help explain the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball successes since head coach Greg Kamansky was named the Broncos’ head coach.

In 2008-09, the Broncos were among the nation’s elite in scoring defense (6th) and rebound margin (5th) and carried that effort into an 11-game winning streak, a share of the CCAA regular-season title, the top seed in the CCAA Tournament and their third Elite 8 appearance in the last seven years. They reached the title game for the first time in school history where they were defeated by top-ranked and unbeaten Findlay.

After going 22-7 last season and reaching the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament, CPP earned the No. 3 spot in the 214-15 preseason poll. In each of the past two years, the Broncos have boasted the top defense nationally.

In 2007-08, the Broncos just missed an NCAA berth when they finished second in the inaugural CCAA Tournament. The Broncos entered the tourney as the No. 8 seed and won an improbable game at top-seed Humboldt State. They upset Cal State Dominguez Hills in the semifinals – a team the Broncos lost to twice in the regular season.

CPP’s exhibition opponents in 2014 Stanford and Arizona - will be the 10th and 11th Division I opponents for the Broncos during Kamansky’s tenure, following: San Diego (2004, 2005), Loyola Marymount (2006), UCLA (2006), USC (2006), Stanford (2007), UC Santa Barbara (2007), UC Irvine (2009) and Duke (2010). In the 2009-10 season, Kamansky’s Broncos captured the school’s first NCAA Division II National Championship. During his entire tenure, Kamansky and the Broncos have accomplished unprecedented feats in the program’s 64-year history: Kamansky, who begins his 15th year as the Broncos head coach in 2014-15, has led CPP to winning records in 13 seasons and a record eight trips to the NCAA Division II postseason. It’s worth noting that prior to Kamansky’s appointment, the Broncos experienced postseason play in just three seasons in the first 52 years of CPP basketball. The 2012-13 season marked another banner year for the Broncos, going 28-3 overall to match the program record set by the 2009-10 national championship squad. In late February 2013, Cal Poly Pomona secured its first-ever outright conference regular season crown. The next month, the Broncos captured the program’s first CCAA Championships tournament title. The 2012-13 Broncos also finished with the top-ranked defense at the Division II level for the first time in program history. In 2011-12, the Broncos compiled marks of 19-8 overall and 15-7 in league play to finish second in the conference standings. CPP reached the semifinal stage of the CCAA Tournament before falling to Humboldt State, 74-70. The Broncos’ defense ranked second nationally as opposing offenses averaged just 57.5 points per contest. During the 2010-11 campaign, the Broncos posted an overall record of 17-11 and a conference mark of 13-9. CPP finished with the third-best defense at the D-II level, holding opponents to just 58.9 points per game. Kamansky has guided the Broncos into the NCAA Division II Elite Eight four times and four CCAA titles. Cal Poly Pomona reached the playoffs in three-straight seasons for the first time ever from 2003-05 while also recording three straight 20-win seasons for the first time in the program’s history. Simply said, the Broncos have experienced more success under Kamansky than at any other time in the history of the program.

After missing out on the NCAA postseason in 2006, Kamansky and the Broncos returned to the postseason in 2006-07 with their fourth 20-win season in the past five years. He led the Broncos to a 24-7 record in 2004-05 and guided Cal Poly Pomona to a share of the CCAA crown, its first since 1981. Cal Poly Pomona, the No. 3 seed in the West Region, went on to defeat No. 6 Seattle Pacific, No. 2 Hawaii Hilo and No. 5 Alaska Fairbanks to get to the Elite Eight, where the Broncos fell in a heartbreaking 58-56 decision to Tarleton State. Kamansky was honored by his peers and named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the 2004-05 season. He was the first Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball coach to earn that honor since 1991. Kamansky led the Broncos to a 21-7 record and a program-best 17 CCAA victories in 2003-04 and into the NCAA Division II playoffs for a second straight season. In 2002-03, Kamansky guided the 23-7 Broncos to the West Region championship and into the national quarterfinals for the first time since 1964. Cal Poly Pomona, which finished second in the CCAA with a 16-6, knocked off No. 5 Alaska Fairbanks, No. 8 Cal State Bakersfield and No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino to advance to the Elite Eight. In his first season as head coach, Kamansky guided a team picked to finish ninth in the conference to a 17-10 record – the most wins for a first-year coach in the history of the program. Kamansky became the 10th head coach in the program’s history following the departure of Tim Rapp before the 2000-01 season. He had been an assistant coach with the Broncos for two seasons. Before coming to Cal Poly Pomona, Kamansky was an assistant men’s coach and assistant athletic director at Fresno Pacific from 1993-98, working in every aspect of the Sunbirds’ basketball program. Prior to his stint at Fresno Pacific, Kamansky was an assistant coach at UC San Diego from 1988-90 and he also worked in administrative roles from 1990-93 at the University of San Diego. He was a four-year letterman at UC San Diego and earned NCAA Division III AllAmerica honorable mention recognition in 1987. He earned all-region honors twice. Kamansky completed his playing career as the school’s second-leading all-time scorer and earned his bachelor’s degree in management science from UC San Diego in 1988. He earned his MBA from San Diego State in 1993.

Kamansky owns a 292-117 record – a winning percentage of .714. His winning percentage is even better against CCAA competition (217-83 -- .723).

Kamansky has long ties to the area. His grandfather, Joe, attended Chaffey College and was a San Bernardino County supervisor. His father, Jerry, attended Chaffey High School. Greg Kamansky attended Arcadia High School.

The Broncos’ success is due to the fact that Kamansky’s teams buy-in to the team concept. They defend and rebound; characteristics of well-disciplined teams.

Kamansky is a National Association of Basketball Coaches Congressman for the West Region.

In 2009-10, Cal Poly Pomona established 20 school records that included: most wins (28), best overall record (28-6), winning streak (15), consecutive road victories

Kamansky and his wife Anne are the parents of four children: Taylor (19), Joseph (16), Zachary (14) and Kylee (10).
