A LOT OF people really dislike Ben Elton, the writer of We Will Rock You, the Queen jukebox musical returning to Copenhagen for another run next week (see G3 for details). I remember on more than one occasion being told about how his parents were practically royalty and that he was a class traitor – yup, in Britain, some people take all that stuff a bit too seriously. It was only years later, probably when Wikipedia started and I could be arsed to look up stuff kids had told me in good faith, that I realised it was an urban myth. That and Seaman Staines and Master Bates being in Captain Pugwash, although it did turn out to be true that some people can fellate themselves. Anyway, did I say writer? I meant splodger. Like here’s a Queen song, and here’s another: can you find a tenuous link to write some Jackson bollocks? Splodge! Sounds easy? Let’s see what I can do: “I want to break free’ from the land of the ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, and all I want to do is ‘Bicycle’?”

Mmmh. But while they say you should stick to what you know, I can’t see the story of a Brit moving to Denmark on a breeding programme becoming a West End mainstay. I can picture Elton searching for ideas and somebody taunting him that he’d never get ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to work, however hard he tried … and the rest is history. Anyhow, while Elton has produced some drivel over the years – I particularly disliked his murder mystery book set in a Big Brother house, Dead Famous, in which almost every single character was based on contestants who had appeared in the UK version of the show – he has to be given credit for his work on the Blackadder series. If you’ve never noticed this before, the first Blackadder is dire, and it was only when Elton, with his numerous metaphor jokes (sample: “Your brain is as full as a eunuch’s underpants”), came on board that it started hitting the heights. Elsewhere this week, there’s barely anything – why else do you think we’ve got a picture of Barda, the children’s TV roleplaying series, on our front cover, to draw your attention to a 70-word listing that has doesn’t actually have any connection to the DR Ramasjang show? Ditto an entire editorial about Ben Elton.

WHO EXACTLY was Swedish playwright Johan August Strindberg? Edvard Munch’s portrait of him (1892) depicts a man with a striking, stern expression and a clenchedfist pose. Richard Bergh’s painting of him (1905) reveals a more whimsical character staring off into the distance with one hand reaching inside his jacket. Strindberg, a painter himself, captured stormy, expressionist seascapes on canvas, which demonstrate his willingness to experiment with modern trends of the time. We can try analysing all sorts of two-dimensional works to discover who he truly was – but let’s be honest. The most effective way to understand the multifaceted Strindberg is to witness one (or two) of his plays. Born in 1849, Strindberg was a prolific writer with a flair for the dramatic. His career spanned four decades, during which time he wrote over 60 plays and more than 30 works of fiction, which have gone on to influence countless playwrights and authors, including the American realist dramatists of the mid to late 20th century. Eugene O’Neill himself, the heavyweight of them all, wrote in 1924 that “Strindberg was the precursor of all modernity in our present theatre,” and that “Strindberg still remains among the most modern of moderns, the greatest interpreter in the theatre of the characteristic spiritual conflicts which constitute the drama – the blood! – of our lives today.” David Mamet, Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams are just three of many playwrights who would agree with O’Neill’s assertion. “Strindberg knew and suffered with our struggle years before many of us were born,” continued O’Neill. “All that is enduring in what we loosely call ‘expressionism’ – all that is artistically valid and sound theatre – can be clearly traced back to his plays.” Etzel Cardeña, the current director of the International Theatre of Malmö (ITM), is another of his admirers. “Strindberg did not flinch at depicting human foibles, his and others, and throw interesting characters into extreme situations, which he took as far as his knowledge of the human condition and his imagination allowed him,” he said. “Authors who write mostly about the day’s popular and fashionable views are swept away by the overcoming of that shal-

Based on Aldous Huxley’s novel, Penderecki swaps communism fervour for 17th century religious fanaticism, telling the story of a priest accused of violating several nuns. Arranged by the KGL’s former artistic director Keith Warner, it is a sinister, unforgettable opera. BH

low cultural wave by another; authors like Strindberg who seek to go to the depths are less affected even if our cultural mores change.” In commemoration of 100 years since his death, ITM is presenting two chamber plays by Strindberg, The Stronger and Simoom, in English. The Stronger is a ten-minute play that consists of only one scene with two female characters: Mrs X and Miss Y. It has no action, no plot development, and only one of the two characters on stage speaks. The premise is simple: two actresses run into each other in a restaurant on Christmas Eve. One is married and has been out shopping for Christmas presents for her family, and the other is unmarried and is alone in the restaurant reading magazines and drinking. Strindberg illustrates the duality of the role women play in society, shedding light on the stereotypical but nevertheless very real contrast between women as individuals and as mothers and wives. Though short, The Stronger is a powerful snapshot of life that one can ponder for hours after. Simoom, a lesser-known one-act play, will transport you to the French-colonised Algerian desert where a French legionnaire and an Arab woman perform a battle of wills. Simoom, which in Arabic means the hot, dry wind that blows across the Sahara towards the Middle East, explores the power of hypnosis and the idea of false or created memories. The Stronger and Simoom are short plays with a lasting impact. “Strindberg is a wonderful choice in this regard because he wrote a number of short one-act plays with the intent of providing an intense

TØRST tackles the physical tension that is created between people when faced with a demanding situation; every movement of the other person is monitored closely and a seemingly innocent look can spark a fight. While MENTE explores the opposite end of the pole: a world where reality and subconsciousness merge and create a hazy, dreamlike state. LD

The Stronger is a more famous play but typically done as a ‘time piece’, even though I believe that with very minor adjustments, the ‘conversation’ between these two actresses could happen today in the coffee house just behind Dramaten in Stockholm, or in Copenhagen.”

Georges Bizet’s classic opera is full of steamy Spanish passion, eroticism, raucous stage scenes and familiar songs that will have you swaying on your haunches. CS

Shakespeare’s Women

This is the mystery Barry McKenna and Ian Burns clarify in Shakespeare’s Women. Set in 1613, days after the fire that destroyed the Globe Theatre. Shakespeare is adapting Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, turning to his previous female creations for inspiration, but he is burnt out. “Records of Shakespeare’s life are hard to come by and we thought it would be fun to try and put ourselves in his shoes,” writes Burns, who himself will be playing Shakespeare. The production plays on memory and imagination as the Bard is haunted by visions of his most popular female characters. AA

We Will Rock You tortuously twists the songs of Queen into an effervescent musical that is now in its eleventh year in London’s West End, selling more than 15 million tickets worldwide. An arena tour of the production is returning after two years to the Forum Copenhagen for five nights of a right royal knees-up. Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor originally got together with author and stand-up comedian Ben Elton to create the show. Ben Elton has cobbled together a Frankenstein’s monster of a storyline, rich in self-irony and oneliners – but it is without a doubt the instantly recognisable Queen songs that have packed out theatres for more than 3,500 shows. The plot? Well, we are in an Orwellian future, where globalisation has reached its inevitable conclusion. All music is computer-

This powerful message is performed in a world with walls of brown moving boxes that are constantly being shifted, rebuilt and torn down. SN

generated and consists solely of boy and girl bands. The Global Soft corporation controls the music industry and hits are planned years ahead. Sounds familiar? It’s basically a Simon Cowell XF scenario of nightmarish proportions: a world in which musical instruments are forbidden. A small band of rebels who want to break free, the Bohemians, are waiting underground for the restrumming of the lost chords: a day prophesised as The Rhapsody. According to legend, the axe of a mighty, longhaired guitar god will one day be rediscovered. Cue our hero: Galileo Figaro, a rebel who, with the aptly named Scaramouche, sets off on the quest for the holy grail. They head to the only place the axe could be: Wembley Stadium! The plot may sound slightly bonkers, but once you have accepted that this storyline is firmly tongue-incheek, then you can sit back and enjoy the ride. At a very early stage in the planning, Elton decided that this was in no way to be a biography of the flamboyant Freddie Mercury, but it is impossible to listen to the music of Queen without being touched by his presence. As regards the plot, Elton makes no claims to weightiness: “Fitting the songs in was not a problem once I’d had the idea of a mock legend – where instead of a sword buried in rock waiting for a hero to save the world, there was a guitar.” But imagine the day after the

first show back in 2002, when hostile reviewers put Elton under pressure and had a field day with comments like “a trite and tacky storyline”, “pantomime has arrived a little early in the West End, in the shape of this shallow, stupid and totally vacuous new musical,” and “far from being guaranteed to blow your mind, We Will Rock You is guaranteed to bore you rigid.” Kevin O’Sullivan from the Daily Mirror even went as far as saying that “Ben Elton should be shot for this risible story.” A decade later, the two hour and 40-minute show didn’t bite the dust, and it seems as if Elton has indeed created a kind of magic. The show is still hugely popular and it seems that sometimes all an audience wants to do is have a good old-fashioned fun night out. Forget the lack of a coherent storyline, forgive the one-liners, innuendo and absurd character names, because the essence of this production is the music. It is quite simply a loud and colourful appreciation of the music created by a legendary band, not a criticallyacclaimed example of high art. Thirty-one of Queen’s most wellknown tracks are brought back to life for highly appreciative and vocal audiences. The undeniably partisan atmosphere is completed at the end of the night when the rhetorical question flashes up on the giant screens: ‘Do you want Bohemian Rhapsody?’ In a theatre jam-packed with Queen fans, the

enmark’s electric-pop sensation Vinnie Who is back with dance moves better than ever! According to the promotional material on Vegaøs website, their new album Midnight Special, with its nostalgic disco grooves, “is even better than the first album”. That’s some claim! Of course, the lead singer Niels Bagge didn’t become a star overnight.

After completing his upper-secondary education, the then 20-year-old took his first synthesiser and Macbook to his parent’s basement and began working towards his two-year goal to release an album and perform at Roskilde Festival. Although the young Bagge had no connections in the music business, he was in no doubt of his future success. “I decided to bet everything on it: to just sit down every day and write songs and to continually improve,” he told Politiken. “I made the agreement with my father, so he understood that I was serious. It meant I could get up every morning, go to the mirror and

look myself in the eye and ask myself: What are you doing today? You should write songs! Do not sit and play ‘Counter Strike’ on your computer or something else.” His intensive music making set the foundation for his career, and in the end it took considerably less than two years for the introverted Bagge to transform himself into the outgoing disco prince we know today. The now 25-year-old singer is uniquely defined by his falsetto vocals and nostalgic disco-pop. Channelling early 1980s Michael Jackson and Prince, he often sports a black punk-do, high-waisted white jeans

and killer dance moves that are nothing short of dapper. Bagge clearly holds Jackson in high esteem. “Obviously nobody can perform like him,” explained Bagge to Politiken. “But what the hell ... he is brilliant, so you might as well steal some of his tricks!” The princes of pop aren’t his only inspiration. As a member of the rock crowd during his school days, he found it embarrassing to listen to pop music. He was particularly into Radiohead and Britpop. “I love music that is sexy, lost, naive, self-confident, warm, cool, electronic and organic at the same time,”

he told GAFFA magazine. “Paradoxes are my favourite.” However, Bagge would be nothing without the eight-piece band that completes Vinne Who. “I wouldn’t like to rely completely on myself, and that’s how it should be,” he told GAFFA. “If you get too confident, you could become like R Kelly!” Taking into consideration all of their recent acclaim, it’s no doubt that Vinnie Who will win over the crowd at their sold-out show at Lille Vega. They made their debut on the Scandinavian circuit with ‘Speeddance’: a catchy anthem harkening to LCD Soundsystem, which caught the eye (or ears, rather) of Mark Ralph (Hot Chip) and Dave M Allen (The Cure), who became the producers of their debut album. The release of their first record has been lauded by the likes of Vice Magazine and Soundvenue: the exact media the band need to get a solid footing here with Scandinavian night crawlers. Expect tickets to sell out as the night draws nearer.

Kaizers Orchestra

Store Vega; 20:00; 465kr Formed in the late ‘90s, the collective strived to inventively oppose the current wave of pop music that was spreading across northern Europe. The orchestral influence on the band’s music is palpable – as their name would lead you to suggest. Drawing inspiration from innumerable musical traditions to create voraciously upbeat songs – most notably Balkan music – the sextet have matured to become one of Norway’s most successful bands in rock history. Understanding Norwegian, although helpful, is not required to appreciate their wildly original take on alternative rock.

Lille Vega; 20:00; 175kr Lil’ Wayne may need more time to prepare for an expectant Danish crowd (his show has been moved from this Wednesday to October 26), but Iggy Azalea and her brand of electronic hip-hop are ready to dazzle at Lille Vega this weekend. Explicit and edgy lyrics are her game, with pointed attention paid to the (often) poor messages sent by male rappers. The Australian wants “to make people question and redefine old ideals”. Her music is layered, interesting and witty. Be sure to snap these tickets up quickly.

Niels Lan Doky Danish Trio

CPH Jazzhouse, Niels Hemmingsens Gade 10, Cph K; 20:00; 270kr This evening’s all-Danish trio is made up of Doky (piano), Jonathan Bremer (bass) and Niclas Bardeleben (drums). Doky – the co-founder of Montmartre – only returned to Denmark last year after a 29-year stint in various jazz scenes abroad, the influence of which is evident in its own musical style. Hailed as one of “the best pianists of his generation” by acclaimed Japanese jazz magazine Swing Journal, Doky’s group of admirers has no shortage of Danish supporters. If you’re on the look out for a decent jazz showcase, look no further.

The Raveonettes THERE’S no place like home for The Raveonettes, a Danish indie-rock duo who are starting their big spring Nordic tour in Copenhagen. Evoking a simple West Coast sound is what Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo are all about, and their songs are carried through with wistful harmonies. Their latest album, Observator, was released this past September, and it is one part surf and one part edge. The songs’ simplicity is juxtaposed with a poignant electric guitar and paced beats that get you moving from side-to-side. Although the two have been playing music for over a decade, their music sounds as fresh as ever. Their opening band, the Danish trio So-So Echo, were hand-picked by The Raveonettes. Kaizers Orchestra IF YOU’RE looking for something a bit more left-of-centre, you want to see Kaizers Orchestra. Most groups coming out of Norway gain popularity by playing black metal, but these guys are one of the first Norwegian groups to sing in their native language and play a more unorthodox, unpredictable style of music. Kaizers Orchestra have a distinctive sound, using oil barrels, train whistles and triangles as integral instruments. The Norwegians have frequently performed away-from-home in Denmark. They performed at Roskilde in 2011 to a sold-out audience, and are regarded as one of the best live acts in all of Europe. ASK ANY international friend what clichés they think of when asked about Denmark, and they will probably come up with four things: pastries, Vikings, Hamlet and beer. The Scandinavians simply can’t get enough of the syrupy brown stuff, which they’ll able to buy virtually any time of day, be it from corner shops or workplace canteens. If your thirst isn’t being quenched by the standard, green can stuff, a small bar just north of the lakes may have the goods to wet your whistle. On Nørrebro’s bustling Elmegade − surrounded by shawarma joints, charity shops and hip fashion boutiques – lies Ølbaren. Danish for ‘the beer bar’, it’s a blunt, borderline arrogantly titled watering hole that certainly lives up to the name. After being hypnotised by the glowing red ‘ØL’ sign outside, you enter the bar to the sounds of uproarious laughter and bottles clinking. It’s a modestly sized, no-frills bar, with half a dozen tables and chairs to one side, and on the other, beer guzzlers plonked down on bar stools, excitedly perusing the selection of drinks on offer like a spoilt child on Christmas morning. When there’s this much variety, who can blame them? At any one time, Ølbaren has a 50-strong inventory of multinational bottled and on tap beverages. The prices range from a modest 35kr for a bottle of Amager Nyhavn Brown Ale to 250kr a pop for a Belgian Bush Prestige (75cl), for when you feel like treating yourself. Best of all, the bar works on quick rotation, meaning they often experiment with whatever new beer they can get their hands on (a Crème Brulee stout from New York sounded right up my street, but it sold out in a flash and is now a thing of legend). Fear not, beer naysayers. If the brown stuff isn’t your drink of choice, there’s also a small selection of matured bourbons, sharp gins, sweet rums, cider and juices for your delectation. As Copenhagen’s first ever artisan beer bar, its ten years of trade has meant that the brotherly proprietors, Lars and Ulrich, have been hugely influential on the city’s bar scene. While the pair spend their time travelling the world and picking up exciting new tipples to bring back here, they are dedicated to supporting the local brewing talent Copenhagen has on offer, with the bar stocked full of the

Despite the many beer connoisseurs who regularly frequent this cosy little establishment, the bar staff and owners are passionate about inviting newcomers into the wonderful world of beer. While the 500kr price tag may sound like a lot, considering the quality of the eight to ten beers you’ll be served, you’ll certainly leave as a merry, satisfied customer. Unlike some of the snooty wine bars and watering holes that are cropping up across the city, Ølbaren is an incredibly down-to-earth establishment. EVEN THOUGH the calendar says March and it’s officially spring, the weather’s still cold and the cyclists of Copenhagen are still wearing gloves and hats. Soup is a wonderful winter food, and one of my favourite soups of all time is the Jerusalem artichoke soup. Despite the name, Jerusalem artichokes are actually not artichokes, nor do they come from Jerusalem. Sometimes called sunchokes, the gnarly little tubers look a lot like ginger root. Jerusalem artichokes have a potato-like texture and have a delicate flavour that is slightly sweet and nut-like. To my mind the Jerusalem artichokes are one of the most underrated vegetables, but often people do not bother buying

them, let alone cooking them, simply because of how they look and the thought of all the peeling. Often described as deformed and ugly, they are known as a poor man’s vegetable; however, they are extremely healthy and often recommended as a potato substitute for diabetics and are fantastic for weight loss. They are filling and consist of a starch that is not utilised by the body for energy, unlike sugar, so they are great for assisting in blood sugar control. Other health benefits include high levels of iron, potassium and thiamine. Raw or cooked, there are many options. Like potatoes, they can be baked, boiled, steamed, fried and stewed.

Jerusalem artichoke soup with bacon (SERVES FOUR) 400g Jerusalem artichokes 250g cauliflower 1 leek 2 cloves of garlic 800ml chicken stock ½ tsp dried nutmeg 250ml Milda Cremefine 2 tbs lemon juice Salt and pepper 300g chicken breast 2 tbs olive oil 200g bacon finely diced (turkey bacon recommended) CLEAN and scrub the roots, peel or scrape off the dirt. Remember that it is not necessary to peel this poor misunderstood vegetable. It is enough just to give them a good wash and scrape the worst little black spots off, as they can easily be cooked with the skin on.

Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters. JOS

Cut the leek and the cauliflower, and peel the garlic. Boil the vegetables in the chicken stock until they are cooked. Remember that they will cook faster than potatoes and can easily be turned to mush in a matter of minutes, if you do not monitor them closely. Keep your eye on them and remove them from the heat source as soon as you can easily pierce them with a skewer. Blend the soup with a hand blender and add the cream. Add nutmeg, salt, pepper and lemon juice and taste it (sometimes I add chili to give it extra taste). Fry up the chicken in olive oil and cut it into slices. Fry up the bacon on a dry pan and pour away the extra fat, and dry the bacon on a piece of hand towel afterwards. Use the chicken and bacon as a garnish on the soup when you serve it up. Bon appétit!

WHAT COMES to mind when you think of a canteen lunch? If it’s sprouts so old they’re cultivating their own, gravy aptly named after your most likely post-consumption destination, and cutlets so turgid they more closely resemble … then it’s likely you’ve never enjoyed one at a Danish company, because it’s something the folks here take really seriously. Whether it’s tray upon tray of female-friendly fare (think salads, couscous and plenty of beetroot), or a daily delivery from a cheery domestic guru, office workers enjoy their subsidised grub with gusto. But still, while Denmark boasts some of the best quality office lunches around, there will always be the notion that maybe some spice might be in order beyond the eco-manic extravaganza that tends to get served up. So last week on Wednesday, we decided to put our staff’s necks, or better stomachs, on the line and experiment with what it may be like to veer off the Danish cuisine bandwagon. And given our British flavour – there are several in the office, four if you include our man from Belfast, and it’s our house style choice of English – there could only be one choice for our collective lunch: Britain’s national dish, the Indian curry. We had high expectations and they were very much met when the containers of fragrant Basmati rice with sweet raisins, naan bread, creamy Butter Chicken, peachinfused Lamb Korma and Palak Paneer all arrived from Indian Flavours to anxious rumbling stomachs. An atmosphere of quiet excitement and expectation grew into lively chatter and sociability. People started pulling in chairs and conversations began in earnest: travel plans, gossip and the news (the non-Danish centric variety of course). All in all, it was the cheapest team-building exercise that a company could wish for. “The food was awesome!” enthused Hristo Aleksandrov, our admin intern. “I really liked the Korma as there were also other things (vegies and/or nuts) swimming together with the meat in the sauce. I also liked the raisins in the rice because their sweetness among the spiciness was like an oasis in the desert ... very good indeed.” Aleksandrov was less enthusiastic about the naans and the packaging though – something he felt the restaurant needed to improve. “I guess they have a different one for the single orders but should think about larger orders as well,” he said. Christian Wenande, a journalist, was also impressed. “The Butter Chicken had an unexpected but welcomed heat that I

It was agreed that as more internationals arrive in this country and make it their home, there is also an influx of influences that are worth embracing, and where better to start than office lunches.

Cuisine, as has been proved by various initiatives over the last decade, gives Danes and foreigners a talking point − a rare commodity on the road to integration, sorry inclusion, and one that the aforementioned Brits have been using for centuries. By simply taking out a lunchtime curry, Danish businesses can enrich the experience of their employees. After all, we all know that variety is the spice of life, and combined with some spice in your food, it’s a winning combination.

Sensitive and sensual, it guarantees satisfaction MARK WALKER

ASED ON the journalistic writings of poet Mark O’Brien, The Sessions is a warm and witty account of his attempts to lose his virginity – at the age of 38. O’Brien (Hawkes) contracted polio as a child and is forced to spend much of his day inside an assisted breathing device known as the ‘iron lung’. Unable to walk and confined to a gurney for travel, Mark’s plight becomes apparent when we witness him being bathed by a home nurse. Unable to wash himself, he must suffer the indignation of being helped by a gruff, embittered woman who mutters things to the effect of “Polio patients are always the worst whiners.” Making matters worse, his perfectly functioning penis (and considerably sized, we’re told more than once) isn’t particularly choosy about a playmate. After several embarrassing bath time ‘accidents’, Mark, a Catholic, feels compelled to consult his priest. “My penis is speaking to me, father,” he informs a decidedly unorthodox William H Macy. Mark forges a confessional bond with his priest during some of the film’s funniest scenes, and the pair thus form an unusual alliance. After much soul searching and one journalistic assignment on ‘sex for the disabled’, Mark happens on the idea to consult a sex therapist. Thus begins a funny, intelligent and soulful performance from Helen Hunt (Mad About You, As Good As It Gets), who it must be said is still looking lovely despite pushing 50, defying gravity in all the right places (in a way that Madonna doesn’t). As

Hunt was reportedly so nervous about the nude scenes that she nearly needed a therapist herself

the breadwinner for her household of husband and teenage son, Cheryl is an experienced therapist who exudes both professionalism and kindness. Some questionable gender equality means that we never see Hawkes in his birthday suit, but the pair are well cast and have natural chemistry. Over the course of only six therapy sessions, Mark’s confidence blossoms, and their teacher/student relationship becomes more complicated. Hawkes was seen recently in the disturbing Martha Macy May Marlene, in which he played a sinister, emotionally-manipulative sexual predator. The

Sessions finds him at the opposite end of the spectrum, equally convincing as a sweet, emotionally vulnerable, sexually inexperienced man. The first of Mark’s sessions, in which Hunt’s character helps him through ‘body awareness’ exercises, are both amusing and genuinely moving. Less convincing, however, is the priest’s comedically relaxed attitude toward Mark’s dilemma and his willingness to sanction, among other things, sex outside of marriage. Macy is fantastic as always, but there are moments that don’t ring true. In fact, I had niggling reservations throughout

the script couldn’t fully convince me here. On the other hand, one might assert that questions of authenticity are irrelevant, especially as so much of the film is successfully played for laughs, but when the opening sequence features actual footage of O’Brien graduating from university, this arguably sets events in a ‘true story’ context. It becomes distracting, then, to think about these potential flights of fancy on the part of Lewin or O’Brien, particularly since they unnecessarily muddy the waters of a great personal victory.

We’re a little confused what a guy with an Austrian accent is doing as the sheriff of a Mexican border town

in regards to the film’s authenticity. One suspects the fault lies either in director Ben Lewin’s screenplay, or the script’s source material: Mark O’Brien’s articles. While the magic of poetry will get you far, the combined task of believing not just one, but three women falling deeply in love with this man (as happens throughout the course of the film), in what seems a very short period of time, feels like a stretch. This is not to say that Hawkes’ character doesn’t deserve the affection, or that three women could never fall for a gurney-ridden journo-poet paralysed by polio – it simply means that

F YOU’RE an Arnie fan, then The Last Stand is an entertaining enough film. Despite the fact that it’s enjoyable, this was in part because my expectations were not very high going into it. The Last Stand begins by introducing us to the small town of Sommerton Junction, a border town between Arizona

and Mexico. Here Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) is town sheriff, although the town generally requires very little action. Although he’s experienced in big city policing, his deputies are definitely lacking. Meanwhile in Las Vegas, a major drug cartel boss makes an incredible escape while being transferred between prisons. As a Mexican criminal hoping to seek refuge, cartel boss Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) speeds his way down to Sommerton expecting to cross the border easily. But not on this sheriff’s watch … Although it starts off a bit slowly, the film quickly picks up pace with lots of highpowered action and stunts. It’s fairly clichéd and predictable,

but the script is surprisingly solid – most elements have reasonable cause and effect. The characters aren’t always the smartest bunch, but then they aren’t always supposed to be. Hollywood tends to be a bit prejudiced in its depictions of the rural life. There is, however, very little character development. All the characters are represented in broad stereotypical strokes. You get the brand you’re buying with the major players and they deliver the behaviours they are known for. Naturally, Schwarzenegger does a lot of action (the man appears amazingly strong for a 65-year-old) while simultaneously delivering cheesy one-liners. Luis

Guzman and Johnny Knoxville are comedians who stick to their particular shticks. The creators of The Last Stand were clearly trying to add humour to the mix by featuring two prominent comedians. But those efforts inevitably fail: Arnie delivers the truly amusing moments, but even those are sparse. The production is fairly high quality, as is expected of a high budget action film. The stunts are decently choreographed and well shot. But it is interesting to see Hollywood try to hold onto the action heroes, as quite frankly, they get old. LIZ DELLAPENNA

The film is enjoyable to a point, and viewers will enjoy particularly poignant performances from Weisz, Williams and Kunis. However, director Sam Raimi attempts to dress up a dull plot with special effects, and while the result is visually dramatic, the script is dramatically thin. JH

Like vintage Scorcese, the narrative rockets along, Zemeckis portraying the events with the assuredness of a master, but with a sense of urgency that would befit a director half his age. While there’s a cartoon hyper-reality to the plot that doesn’t ring true, the proceedings are still excruciating and genuinely moving. MW

Remorseless and torturous the film may be, but you

Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona; Spa drama/disaster, 2012, 114 mins; Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin The Impossible, based on the real-life experiences of a family caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace. It is sometimes hard to watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered by the water and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows after the wave hits. The work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout won’t be able to stop watching. LR of the entire film. Dir: Jason Moore; US comedy/musical, 2012, 112 mins; Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson Pitch Perfect looks and sounds exactly like every other musical comedy that features a singing or dancing competition. Kendrick plays a music-mad college freshman caught in a war between her university’s rival singing groups – and unfortunately, her performance is about the only redeeming factor in the film. The show-stopping numbers help offset its predictability, but ultimately, the film is a not-so-funny musical comedy that is more tone deaf than pitch perfect. JH

The film manages to conduct a joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. And while the Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, the film doesn’t buckle under their weight. KRG

Avoid like the Plague Parker (15) Dir: Taylor Hackford; US action/crime, 2013, 118 mins; Jason Statham, Jennifer Loepz, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis, Clifton Collins Jr Parker is the sort of film in which you need to leave any questions of plausibility at the door and just enjoy the gaudy action spectacle. The plot is derivative, and like all good/bad action B-movies, is utter balderdash, slugglishly tumbling through the two-hour running time. What’s more, the ‘stick ‘em up!’ dialogue is cringe-worthy, and the characterisation ignominious. Nevertheless, it’s mindless entertainment that you can’t help but succumb to. LR

Coarse and monotonous where its predecessors were clever and complex, it’s no exaggeration to call A Good Day to Die Hard the worst film of the seemingly never-ending series. Perhaps most worrisome of all is the knowledge that the suffering is far from over and the franchise will continue. DS

Also Playing Quartet (7) Dir: Dustin Hoffman; US comedy/Drama, 2013, 98 mins; Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay At a retirement home for former musicians, an annual concert is disrupted by the arrival of eternal diva Jean (Smith), who also happens to be the ex-wife of one of the residents. While endearing, Hoffman’s directorial debut is far from honest about ageing – all the seniors seem to be in tip-top form, and the film’s plot is almost painfully predictable. But the underlying message of always continuing to learn and grow is a charming one that will leave audiences grinning. JH

Hitchcock (11) Dir: Sascha Gervasi; US drama, 2012, 98 mins; Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Danny Huston, Toni Collette Hitchcock, disappointingly, is less of a ‘Making of Psycho’ biopic and more something that might have been entitled ‘Alma and Alfie’ – a dramatisation of the director’s turbulent relationship with his wife. Hopkins and Mirren do their damndest to elevate a mediocre script, and their chemistry shines through the uninspired writing. But ultimately, the script is content to languish on the surface of complexity, in an ultimately dull, soap opera exposé of Hitch’s private life. MW

Beautiful Creatures (11) Dir: Andreas Dalsgaard; Den doc, 2012, 83 mins Beautiful Creatures appears marred by teen-flick clichés and blockbuster gimmicks like that of Twilight or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which will unfortunately turn many potential viewers away from a genuine experience. The acting is above par, and you’ve got to love the guffaw-inducing dialogue. It’s far from an unforgettable film, nor is it an important or genre-renewing film, but isn’t half as dullwitted as one might fear. KRG

Beasts of the Southern Wild (11) Dir: Benh Zeitlin; US drama/ fantasy, 2012, 94 mins; Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-ofage story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism. Protagonist Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an overreliance on voiceovers prevents the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for. I’VE JUST watched the first two series of The Inbetweeners on Netflix. Given how short each episode is, it didn’t take me long. However, while it’s easy to watch, I’m not sure I’ll ever watch it again, like I would do The Office. Potentially a classic, they ruin it with characters too unbelievably stupid. This might work in a mock-up of Elizabethan England, but not in a bog-standard school. We’re meant to fall in love with their comic flaws, but we’re being short-changed every time they conform to character. For example, why does Mr Porky Pie carry on telling fibs to people who never believe him? Why does Mr Shut Your Pie Hole keep talking when all he needs to do is shut it to lose his virginity? Why does Mr American Pie keep on

taking advice off his idiotic friends? Why!? Because this is Planet Sitcom, and these are the rules. Still, the comic beats are spot on. Providing you don’t mind relentless jokes about masturbation, you’ll laugh out loud a lot. And there’s the added bonus of seeing this depraved filth, made by Britain’s Channel Four, on Aunty Beeb. What were they thinking of? Your mother’s tits, probably. But What if Women ruled the World? (BBC World, Sun 19:30). Would they stand for smut like that? Maybe, but are there any guarantees anything would change for the better, given it would need a totalitarian ‘Worm who Turned’ state to evolve to make it a reality.
