IT’S AT THIS time of year – normally when we have a week in which there’s very little, and I’m done writing about the weather (note to self: fire the next freelancer whose piece starts with a reference to how depressing winter is or hygge – hopefully the dismissal will prove to be the final straw) – that I like to look at the Oscar field and contemplate which films might drag me to the cinema over the next four months.

Besides Quentin Tarantino’s Djano Unchained, which is an outsider to claim the big prize at 50/1, there aren’t too many immediately obvious choices, although I’m sure the pondlife out there will be thrilled to know that this year we can expect additions to the Die Hard, Iron Man, Star Trek, The Hangover, Superman and Kick-Ass franchises.

The Oscar contenders, on the other hand, tend to be a safe bet and you might consider two films we’ve already reviewed, Ben Affleck’s Argo (11/4) and Clint Eastwood’s Trouble with the Curve (33/1), which will be joined later this month by Michael

Haneke’s Amour (release date: 20 December, 33/1) and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (25 Dec, 11/1). Amour is about an 80s relationship (ageists beware, not the 1980s), while Life of Pi is about a man’s relationship with a tiger – it’s bound to end a tad sadly.

In January we’ve got Benh Zeitlin’s fantastical Beasts of the Southern Wild (3 Jan, 33/1), Paul Thomas Anderson’s majestic The Master (31 Jan, 20/1) and Steven Spielberg’s epic biopic Lincoln (31 Jan, 3/1).

The first is an amazing journey, the second apparently tails off a bit, while we know the third ends badly.

In February, we’ve got Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty (7 Feb, 16/1), a dark horse about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden – it starts jihady and ends very badly.

In March, we’ve got the favourite, Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables (21 March, 5/2), which will be bidding to become the first musical since Chicago to win the top prize, but will they dream the dream without Susan Boyle? And Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines (28 March, 25/1) stars Ryan Gosling as a motorcycle stunt rider who … hang on a minute, a stunt driver again?! This can only head one way.

And finally in April, we’ve got David O Russell’s romcom Silver Linings Playbook (25 Dec, 11/1), which will end a little gladly and sadly, but hopefully not too badly.

The flood of mandatory cheer can bring on waves of homesickness, and in the absence of familiar traditions, the sheer presence of pickled herring or rødkål (red cabbage) are enough to leave any expat ready to flee for familiar shores.

Here to brighten the season and demystify some of those classic Danish traditions is The Copenhagen Post’s Family Christmas Party, inviting holiday enthusiasts young and old to gather around the Christmas tree. Also hosted by Expat in Denmark and DTU, the festivities aim to bring together families both from around the globe and around Copenhagen.

Just look at The Killing and Borgen.” The plot sees ‘Vivienne’ decide she’s had enough of the CCC and decide to adapt a longlost Hitchcock script. Her actors vow to dispense of her quickly. LL

Haven’t mastered seasonal tongue-twisters like ‘glædelig jul’ quite yet? Not to worry – instructions will be provided both in English and Danish. And what would any Christmas party be without a special guest from up north? He’ll be stopping by later in the afternoon to dole out surprises to all the young expats.

But it’s not just about Santa coming to town, suggests Lise Thomsen, the head of Expat in Denmark. For Thomsen, the party is an important chance for Copenhagen’s international community to blur the lines between work and socialising, expats and locals.

“For Expat in Denmark, it is important to support an event like the Christmas party because it’s a way to give the whole family a possibility to network and enjoy themselves – in good company with other families in Denmark,” Thomsen said.

“At the same time, they get an introduction to Danish Christmas ‘specialities’ like æbleskiver and gløgg and other traditional treats.” With snacks, mingling and networking, the afternoon is shaping up to

Attendees from last year attest that this annual party isn’t one to pass up. “The Copenhagen Post Christmas party was good fun last year with great food, fun activities for kids and great opportunities to meet other expats,” recalls Gaby Lewin, who is busy overseeing the PR and marketing for the Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s January pantomime Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp. But is she too busy to make an appearance this year? “Santa even made an appearance!” Looks like she is sold.

With something for everyone, this event is sure to be a hit once again for natives and internationals from one to 100.

So join the veterans and newcomers alike in bringing a bit of international flavour to Denmark’s holiday hygge.

Four international dancers come together in a collective celebration of their home countries as a tribute to diversity and festivity, acknowledging common life milestones and occasions in a period often overshadowed by conflict and uncertainty. As the performance progresses, the dancers must face critical decisions with some serious results. The evening begins with a short intro from toastmaster Mark le Fêvre, the 2012 winner of the Danish Open in stand-up comedy. JH

After a fateful spindle prick sends her into a centurylong slumber, the protagonist princess finally awakes after rescue from her prince, just in time for wedding bells to ring.

Good and evil, humour and drama all combine in this fairytale adventure for audiences of all ages. JH

Art 4 Social Change

Warehouse9, Halmtorvet 11C, Cph V; seminar & debate: Sat 14:00-18:00; exhibition started Tue 4 Dec, ends Sun; 3322 2847; www.warehouse9.dk WAREHOUSE9 has not been around very long, but already has a reputation of putting on a show that’s both shocking and entertaining. Just recently they housed the International Performance Art festival, which featured controversial acts such as Mad Kate and Kira O’Reilly. Art 4 Social Change looks like it will be just as titillating.

The event will be taking place at the groundbreaking art gallery Warehouse9. It consists of a photo exhibition, which started on Tuesday and will run until Sunday, and a seminar with talks and debates on Saturday. The seminar will be followed by an evening of great wonder, which includes a photo exhibition, live performances, film screenings and live music.

The seminar can be seen as a follow-up to some of the exquisite work the gallery has done with J Jackie Baier, who will also be participating this time, which have focused on sexuality and the situation of transgendered people in the sex industry.

Dronning Louises Bro, Cph N, started Nov 14, ends Sep; open Mon-Sun 07:00-22:00; www.copenhagen.dk Væggen (The Wall) is a project created by the Museum of Copenhagen. It is a mobile exhibition in a freight container about the city of Copenhagen currently sitting on the Nørrebro side of Dronning Louises Bridge.

Archival pictures from Copenhagen’s history are shown alongside multimedia installations of video and images from the present day. Anyone can upload pictures to the project, which moves from neighbourhood to neighbourhood in the city. BF

participating have worked with similar issues, the event will not focus solely on the theme of sex and sexuality, but should rather be seen as a platform for different forms of art.

The organisers hope to inspire participants and attendees to look for art in places they might not have looked before and, most importantly, think about how art can lead to a change in our society or perhaps how art can even be the social change itself.

The gallery also hopes that the event will set the tone for the themes it will be working with for the next couple of years.

The event promises to be different from your average Saturday with talks from inspiring people such as Gary Everett from Liverpool, England, whose project ‘Homotopia’ has helped to fight homophobia and negative stereotypes in northern England Also speaking is Elizabeth Japsen, a Danish transperson who is a member of Enhedslisten Queerudvalg, a political organisation that feels that a broader definition of the term gender should be more prevalent and accepted in Danish politics.

A talk from Fahad Saeed, project leader of Sabaah, is also sure to be moving. Sabaah is a Danish social and cultural association for LGBT people from ethnic backgrounds, and in his talk, Fahad will speak about how a platform for social work can be created through cultural arrangements.

Books become both large forms that take over an exhibition space and small paintings that remain on the wall. He shows new work in this solo exhibition. BF

The hook who brings joy and order to the masses

Peter Hook (New Order/ Joy Division DJ Set)

Rust; Friday 23:00; 80kr, www.billetlugen.dk hen you hear the name Peter Hook, you’re more likely to think of the legendary Joy Division bassist than you might a nightclub DJ. However, Hook has managed to reinvent himself for the umpteenth time, as the remnants of Joy Division continue their soul-searching to find themselves three decades after the death of the band’s lead singer Ian Curtis.

Joy Division’s output, including hits like ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and ‘Ceremony’, in the late 1970s pioneered the post-punk movement and very arguably planted the seeds of the 1980s Manchester music scene. However, the band’s story took a distinct turn for the worse following Cur-

tis’s suicide in 1980, after which they were plagued by drug abuse, alcoholism and assault as the three remaining band-members tried to redefine themselves.

“If I hadn’t given up drinking, I’d be dead,” Hook said in an interview with GQ Magazine. “It was all day, every day.

I don’t know how I got through it, to be honest.”

The death of Curtis effectively gave birth to New Order, which was basically the same band without the deceased singer.

Success was varied, and despite the occasional mega-hit like ‘Blue Monday’, the band’s reputation suffered. The police were actually called to Roskilde in 1984, for instance, as Hook and his bandmates created so much anger following their late, drunken and off-tune performance that they needed protection from the angry Danish crowd.

Despite having continued

releasing records until the midnoughties, the band were marred by melancholy and cocaine, as fractures appeared between band-mates.

“This was one of the problems with New Order,” Hook told GQ Magazine. “When you weren’t drinking, you had no escape. If something happened in the group, I’d get twatted. When I got angry, I’d get rat-arsed.”

New Order first broke up in 1993, had a reunion five years later – during which time Hook had never been far away from the frontpages due to his fouryear marriage to comedienne Caroline Aherne (1994-97), the creator and star of The Mrs Merton Show and The Royle Family – before breaking up indefinitely in 2007 following a fall-out between Hook and frontman Bernard Sumner. It seems that the band chemistry of Joy Division couldn’t be recreated in New Or-

der, and that this eventually led to their downfall.

“New Order didn’t have that raw, emotional power that Joy Division had. It was always going to be a struggle to fill the gap that Ian left,” Hook explained to GQ Magazine. “New Order was a car that had one back tyre that kept going. You’d pump it up and it would be alright for a bit, and then: bump-bump.”

The controversies didn’t stop following the band’s break-up.

Hook released his memoirs, Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division, in which he heavily criticised his former band-mates after they decided to continue New Order without the former bassist. It got to a point when Sumner publicly told Hook to “go away and do something else, and don’t bitch about us anymore”.

Who knew that “something else” would line the pockets of his disgruntled former band-mem-

bers. Hook’s new-found band, Peter Hook and The Lights, were initially panned by critics as a ‘last ditch gasp’ and labelled as “grave robbing Ian Curtis” by fans.

However, Hook proved them all wrong by selling out concerts, filling up auditoriums and bringing commercial success back to Joy Division’s celebrated album Unknown Pleasures.

Now that Hook has found some inner peace, he’s decided to briefly put down the bass and pull out the turntables. This time around, though, there will be no repeat of the Roskilde riot, offkey alcoholic riffs or police interference – just classic Joy Division and New Order tunes to take you back to an era we all remember with joy, even if the band’s recollections are a little less orderly.

With a series of hit numbers and jazz samples, Fame’s boyish-yet-elegant compositions gave rise to new dance moves and provided the musical backdrop for dancehalls up and down the country. Tonight he’ll be teaming up with a Danish assemblage of jazz musicians, including pianist Jacob Christoffersen, bassist Mads Vinding and the esteemed Miami-born, Copenhagen-based saxophonist Bob Rockwell.

Joey Calderazzo + Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts feat. Håkan Broström

Endowed with skills that make him near that of a born genius, Calderazzo’s sheer dexterity, fiery energy and creativity will mesh at CPH Jazzhouse with the talented American drummer Watts and Swedish-born tenor saxophonist Broström, who have both seen their fair share of the jazz world’s spotlight, as well.

The Bronx

Lille Vega; 21:00; 150kr Landing on their feet amongst hordes of punk rock fans in Los Angeles, this quintet were an overnight success, gaining momentum with the aid of former Guns N‘ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke. Releasing three seminal rock albums – each record simply taking the name of the band, the latest of which was released earlier this year – the punk outfit’s unconventional, off-the-wall style has made them legends of the post-punk era. With significant experience on the road – they’ve toured ever since forming in the mid-‘00s – they’ve gained an untarnished reputation as a sublime live act.

Cheap Time

Stengade; Stengade 18, Cph N, 21:00; 60kr All the way from Tennessee, the ever-changing trio are best at crafting cocky sing-song tunes centred on the arrogance of youth. Packaging their fancyfree philosophy into their third record, Wallpaper Music (2012), the compilation of power-pop numbers glimmer with the influence of atypical glam-punk bands such as ‘The Quick’, ‘Television’ and ‘Milk ‘n’ Cookies’. Chance encounters with new bands in a city the size of Copenhagen is rare, so think of this one as a chance to plug into something new.

ince winning the BBC’s Sound of 2012 award in January, this year has been a long one on the road for Michael Kiwanuka. And finally, last week on Wednesday, a nine-month tour that started with a gig in Copenhagen’s Vega drew to a close at the very same venue.

“It’s been a great tour,” the blues/soul singer told the Copenhagen Post. “Even when there are only ten people in the room, you still get this great reception from the crowd that makes you realise why you started playing music in the first place.”

There was no risk of low attendance at Vega, however.

ered a feeling of wholeness that wasn’t often found in the ‘70s, which is what makes Kiwanuka different from his inspirations.

Kiwanuka particularly shone when alone with bassist Peter Randell on stage. The duo performed ‘Lassan’ and ‘Rest’, which thrived on the simplicity of the bass and high chords on the acoustic. It was in those instances that Kiwanuka’s voice fulfilled its simplistic brilliance and left the crowd swaying.

“When people think about ‘the black music’ scene, they often think of rap and R’n’B,” Kiwanuka explained. “But what they tend to forget, is that 30 years ago it was the likes of Marvin Gaye and Jimi Hendrix who defined black music in its entirety. That’s the music that I associate myself with. And that’s the music that I want to bring back.”

And as far as the Copenhagen Post is concerned, we hope he does.

The only reason to not see the group, who do Scandinavian melancholic rock so well, is perhaps their previous affiliation with the original Twilight film.

His rugged style has seen him team up with talented beat-smiths around the globe, from Japan’s DJ Honda to England’s Groove Armada. This is a must-see for serious hip-hop fans.

Meanwhile, performing Messiah during the Christmas season has been taken into the hearts and traditions of the Yuletide-loving Danes, so even if you’re more into Christmas than Christianity, do as the Danes and make your way to one of the following churches for a musical bout of ‘julehygge’ to put you into the Christmas spirit – just don’t be lulled into a Christmas comatose and forget to stand for the Hallelujah chorus. You don’t want to be that guy.

WITH CHRISTMAS quickly approaching, most of us have probably spent more time thinking about how many bottles of schnapps we are going to knock back, rather than how to prepare the perfect (and near holy) Flæskesteg. This Danish version of roast pork has long been considered one of Denmark’s principal national dishes, and it is also considered a favourite for the Danish Christmas dinner − served on Christmas Eve. Although pork is now a firm favourite in Denmark, it wasn’t actually until the 1860s, after the Industrial Revolution, that it became such a popular dish. Prior to the introduction of wood-fired ovens, it was all sausages and hams

for the Danes. From the beginning, joints were always cooked together with the rind in order to provide crackling, and ever since, this has become a prerequisite for a great Flæskesteg.

Over the years, I’ve seen many glourious roast porks fail miserably due to the crackling not becoming crispy, which is why this recipe should be followed to a T. The key to crispy crackling involves using a sharp knife to score the skin, making sure to cut almost through to the meat.

Once scored, it is essential to rub the skin with loads of salt, pepper to taste, and then of course to ensure it passes the Danish test, choose bay leaves over cloves as your decoration.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts.

The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets.

Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters.

Danish Flæskesteg Pork neck on the bone with skin intact 800g Coarse salt Ground pepper bay leaves 10-15 6-7 cups water meat thermometer START BY preheating the oven to 180C while you prepare the pork. Although it is perfectly fine to take the pork straight from the fridge, allowing it to stand and come to room temperature is desirable.

Once the pork has reached room temperature, start by scoring the pork skin all over at 5mm intervals, until you are nearly down to the meat.

Then with a damp hand, rub in plenty of coarse salt, and pepper to taste. Finally take the bay leaves and stick them into the cuts.

There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Once prepared, place the roast, skin-side up, on an oven rack over a deep roasting tray along with 6-7 cups of water.

Roast the pork at 180C for 65-70 minutes.

Halfway through the cooking you can pour off the liquid from the roasting tray. This liquid can then be reserved for making gravy if you wish.

To make sure that the roast is cooked to perfection, always use a meat thermometer to test the roast’s core temperature before removing it from the oven.

At 65C it will be slightly pink and juicy, whilst cooking to a higher temperature will produce a drier roast.

Let the roast rest for at least 15 minutes before carving.

Serve roast pork with boiled potatoes, red cabbage and gravy.

THIS WILL not be the first or the last time that a non-Dane in these pages ponders the true meaning of that great Danish concept of ‘hygge’. But as the first snow of the year starts to appear, thinking about it here is topical, if not revolutionary.

Not only does a grasp of hygge provide both an insight into some of the values that Danes hold dear, but it’s also a cautionary tale about the perils of translation, because it’s a concept that can be tricky to pin down. While it most definitely translates as ‘cosy’, ‘hygge’ can imply so much more than just cosiness. And this complexity extends to the physical too, as a place needs to do a lot more than simply light some candles to be ‘hyggeligt’. Because ultimately ‘hygge’ is a state of mind, rather than anything tangible, and as with all feelings, you can tell straightaway when it’s there without necessarily being able to pin it down in words.

So, just because you can spot a few candles in a cosy looking bar when you cycle past, it’s no guarantee that the feeling inside will be ‘hyggeligt’. Too often with some of the more, let us say, ‘fashionable’ bars on Vesterbro, there can be a frosty feeling when you walk in that is only highlighted by the candles that line the windowsills and tables, so it’s a great relief that the atmosphere when walking into Lundgren Torvet is immediately as warm as the flickering flames that might entice you in.

In some respects, this tucked-away wine bar can consider its location both a blessing and a curse. Sitting on the far corner of Vesterbro Torv, almost obscured by the bright lights of Café Obelix, the more noticeable cafes on the square will most likely sweep up any casual customers, leaving the snug Lundgren Torvet with a feeling of being for those ‘in the know’. It’s by no means hidden, but just doesn’t shout itself across the square, which feels like a blessing for its customers. The front door leads straight into the bar area and its large armchairs and sofa, and a scattering of bar stools against the classic French bistro-style bar. While it doesn’t take more than 15 or so people to fill up the front bar, there’s a decentsized dining area behind it, with simple wooden furniture, exposed brick walls and blackboards displaying the menus.

Although the food selection at Lundgren Torvet is modest, what it does serve is appropriately chosen and served well.

The selection of plates will do away with

daily and sourced from the Hungarian restaurant Bock near the US Embassy to get around Lundgren Torvet’s lack of a hot food licence. The choice on our visit was a warming beef stew with peas and mashed potatoes for 125kr, something that shouts out to be enjoyed with a big glass of Burgundy.

Our wines were chosen by our helpful waiter Mark, who recommended two perfect fits for us and our food – an alwaysdrinkable Bourgogne for the white, and an Austrian Pinot Noir for the red, which was a light and (literally) cool alternative

to some of the heavier reds on offer.

Good food, good wine, good surroundings and good service – yes, this definitely qualified as a ‘hyggeligt’ evening. And even on a cold and wet Monday night, many of Lundgren Torvet’s candlelit tables were occupied, with the locals being joined by British, Dutch and French customers who were all proving that it isn’t just Danes who can appreciate a hygge little bar when they find one.

HERE’S A familiarity that pervades almost every facet of Killing Them Softly. Ray Liotta running a scam, feeling the pinch from his superiors; James Gandolfini breathing heavily through his nostrils (albeit it in a largely irrelevant role), huffing and puffing his way through the dialogue like some prize bull on downers; Brad Pitt doing his light-fingered spiel, managing to do the clean up without getting his hands dirty – a golden boy – dancing above the mess.

That’s a double-edged sword, for while there’s an element of welcome celluloid nostalgia to be enjoyed from watching this medley of greatest gangster hits, it’s all so uncomfortably derivative. There’s a creeping sense that writer/director Andrew Dominik has stolen much more than he’s created.

At the very least, his casting and his soundtrack lack so little imagination as to be groan-inducing. It’s like watching a Martin Scorsese film shot by Michael Mann and written by Quentin Tarantino – which might be interesting, except that all three would be doing impersonations of themselves.

That is to say, that while the film looks the part with its textural lighting and autumnal colours, there’s no escaping that this is all a second-hand and violent regurgitation of something you’ve already seen: at best, lovingly crafted nostalgia: at worst, spotty-faced fanboy filmmaking.

Despite Dominik’s attempts to persuade you otherwise, the plot is minimal – please read the following aloud, adopting an East Coast ma-

fioso accent as you go: It goes down like this: Markie’s place sees a lotta poker action. One day Markie (Liotta) clocks all the paper flying around his joint and figures: who’s gonna suspect him knocking off his own joint, right? So he fixes it all up and hires a couple a fresh mooks to drop by, wave their pieces around and bag the green. Bada-bing. Runs like a dream.

Only snag being, Markie’s got a big mouth. He can’t help himself: starts sounding off about how he ripped off his joint. Before long, da whole hood is talkin’. That’s when The Squirrel (Vincent Curatola) starts cookin’ up a

hit on Markie’s place, all on his own figurin’ since everybody’s still yabberin’ about it, finger o’ blame’s sure to point at Markie. Don’t matter whether it makes sense or not, it’s what they’ll say on the street. Course, the Squirrel don’t do his own laundry, if you take my meaning. That’s where these two deadbeats Frankie (McNairy) and Russell (Mendelsohn) come into the picture ...

What follows this initial set-up becomes protracted beyond all reason, and redundant plot complications hide the paper-thin premise. Dominik, with all his romantic stylings, would

economic meltdown at the moment the news is breaking, thus comparing these gamblers and small-time crooks to US big business and corrupt bankers. The McCain/Obama election unravels via billboards, on car radios and in snippets of TV news in bars.

The intention shows there was the potential to provide the film with some of the originality and depth that it so badly needs – but alas, it never really seems to gel in any meaningful way, and certainly not in Pitt’s concluding monologue, which despite an attempt to summarise the film’s subtext, feels contrived. have you believe that 2008 – dressed up to look more like 1978 with all the leather jackets, brylcreem, Mustangs and Cadillacs you can wave a piece at is enough to make you actually give a f*@$. There’s not one character to care about. Perhaps the inclusion of a single female character might have provided perspective – a refreshing glass of ice water in this, a desert of variations on tired, testosterone-fuelled clichés.

If there is anything to recommend the film by way of originality, it must be Dominik’s attempt to tell a gangster story about NY hoodlums through the spectrum of our current

from a man, instead of a woman. A ‘traitor’ to his sex, Hardy gives men’s secrets away to the enemy (women, obviously), those being, basically, that a man is biologically programmed to want sex, while women want marriage. So, the simple path to marital bliss is paved with abstinence and adventure, and one we get to follow with four troubled couples. There’s confusion, lying and manipulation, but with Hardy’s help, every woman eventually gets her man.

If you can get over the blatant sexism of the Victorian-age premise, you might be able to enjoy some of the funny, dirty jokes that come from a bright cast who do the best they can

with a wafer-thin script. Standup comedian Kevin Hart is slumming it after the brilliance of Modern Family, though he has some funny moments as ‘the (un)happily divorced guy’ who is as hyperactive and inappropriate as a terrier in heat.

Taraji P Henson gives a credible performance that goes beyond her skeleton of a character in Lauren, a driven executive who is painted as bitter and vapid (and single of course). She calls herself “strong”, her friend calls her “too strong” – enter a strapping young lad to come and save her from her successful self. But here’s the miracle: despite their stale set-up, Henson and the ridiculously sexy Michael Ealy

have real chemistry, and their scenes are some of the few that contain any sense of intimacy or romance.

In what was probably a bid to subvert the overhanging chauvinistic attitude, writers Keith Merryman and David Newman have attempted to create four bright and vivacious female leads, admittedly with moderate success. But how is it that four smart and articulate women all fall into the same female clichés that have been around since the dawn of time? What you’re left with is a predictable battle of the sexes romcom that has little more to offer than a few soonforgotten chuckles.

As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems.

But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Longtime couple Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) embark on an intensive marriage counselling class in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. The film raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist Bernie Feld (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intimacy exercises, shudder-worthy attempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

Room 237 (15) Dir: Rodney Ascher; US doc, 2012, 102 mins Documentary film-maker Rodney Ascher delves into one of the most-beloved horror films of all-time, namely Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and, with the help of five hard-core Shining fans, explores some of the many symbolic interpretations surrounding the film. Most of it is far-fetched and absurd, but all of it entertaining! LL

Argo (15) Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary that it really should be. Sinister (15) Dir: Scott Derrickson; US horror, 2012, 110 mins; Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onoofrio, Michael Hall D’Addario, Juliet Rylance What Sinister lacks in innovation it makes up for in jump-inducing frights and gruesome imagery.

This flick will definitely please horror fans, but might not be the thing for the squeamish. LL

Too Much Too Young - Children of the Middle Ages DRK, Wed 20:00

THEY SAY Xmas is for the kids, and this week we’ve got them dying prematurely, getting murdered, acting precocious and Richard Hammond.

A kid I knew lost half his cranium in a crash. But here’s the thing: he came back a nicer bloke, as he used to be a complete dick. Sadly, the reverse was true of the presenter of Richard Hammond’s Journey to the Centre of the Planet (DRHD, Mon 20:00). Now he’s a rabid maniac who can’t stop guzzling and dribbling over simplified drivel in the hope that someone will give him back his marbles. Watch him give plate tectonics the Top Gear treatment, and jump on any excuse to show us explosions, molten lava and sparkly bits that aren’t too dissimilar to the contents of his brain.

Not sure Hammond would have made it to adulthood in the 1430s if the 2011 BBC doc Too Much Too Young - Children of the Middle Ages is anything to go by. Looking principally at the areas of religion, war and work, it’s a fascinating new perspective of the era, even if the narrator’s gesticulations are a wee bit distracting at times.

A bit like the presence of the filmmaker in Andrew Jenks, Room 335, the 2005 debut of the top-ofthe-dox pin-up who has introducedMTV’s viewers to the concept of … well, you can’t really call this documentary, it’s reality TV whichever way you look at it. In this doc, Jenks hangs out in an old people’s home and discovers that, hell no, while their faces have disappeared, some of them still have personalities.

Like the British comedians in John Bishop’s Sport Relief Hell (BBC Ent, Sat 21:00 or Sun 16:30) and David Walliams’s Big Swim (BBC Ent, Sat 22:00 or Sun 17:30) whose efforts really go to show that if you’re brave enough to try standup comedy, you can do anything.

Elsewhere, Secrets of the AraDRK, Wed 20:00 Too Much Too Young - Children of the Middle Ages bian Nights, presented by Richard E Grant, looks at how the tales were brought to Europe; Sculpture Diaries (DRK, Wed 21:00) revisits the creation of Mount Rushmore; crass 2012 drama series Beauty and the Beast (TV2 Zulu, Sat 20:00) scored a poor 33 on Metacritic; and Andrew Marr’s series History of the World, according to the Guardian, is a “good edit” despite the “ridiculous dramatic reconstructions”.
