BEN HAMILTON

THEY RUINED DARTS. I used to love watching the World Championship in the 1980s. Jockey Wilson drinking a million pints, Keith Dellar’s 138 checkout to win in 1983 after Eric Bristow played safe, Bullseye, and Sid Waddall’s single greatest bit of commentary ever: “When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer. Bristow’s only 27!” But then in the 1990s, a fat bloke fell out with another fat bloke over a packet of pork scratchings, and we ended up with more than one world champ. A bit like boxing, which is – let’s face it – complete rubbish these days as well. So it doesn’t exactly fill me with joy to discover there are two beer festivals this weekend: the traditional one (see G8), now in its 12th year, and a new one (see G3) run by upstarts who thought they could hijack the former’s media space. And they succeeded! I had a wedding over the weekend and came back to discover the wrong

festival’s been written about! Still, there’s some decent mileage in this rivalry and hopefully we’ll be able to do it some justice over the summer, but in the meantime here’s a taster. The upstarts, Mikkeller bar in Vesterbro who sniffily declined to give me a photo for some free advertising for an event that has admittedly already sold out, on Wednesday posted the following message on their Facebook page: “Not among the ten to travel for on Danske Ølentusiaster’s new list, but Top 50 bars in the World according to the Sunday Times. Hell yeah!” So their enemy is the country’s beer enthusiasts: Denmark’s CAMRA. How times change as it was only recently that the Danske Ølentusiaster were the upstarts. “There’s more to Danish beer than Carlsberg,” Steffen Kay Ejlertsen, the deputy chairman of their Østerbro branch, told me in 2007. “We got fed up with the monolopy of Carlsberg who for too long had been deciding what we needed to drink. This is a beer revolution.” Echoes of Russia 1917 anyone? Elsewhere, soak up the beer at Hungarian restaurant Bock Bistro (see G13), or blow off some of your beer gut at the Tango Festival (G9). Failing that, you probably have the physique to take up darts – just be warned, being world champ ain’t what it used to be.

The cast turn snow white with shock at the sight of the emperor’s new clothes

Black Fairytale

Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 20, Cph V; starts Sat, ends May 26; performances Tue-Sun at 20:00; tickets: 130kr, concessions 60kr; www.dansehallerne.dk WHAT COULD be a more appropriate setting for a new fairytale than the land where fairytales began? Forget cookie cutter characters like the hero, the villain and the lovers – Black Fairytale is a different kind of story. This original and experimental dance piece explores the contrasts of good and evil and the shades of grey in between. Mixing in a heavy dose of reality, the performance dances around themes as diverse as love and war, and utopia and dystopia. Black Fairytale choreographers Oded Graf and Yossi Berg are from Israel, and the show’s choreography is inspired in large by their personal experiences living in Tel Aviv. “Our background and culture has a huge influence and is something that can’t be separated from the choreography,” Graf says. “All the pressure, temperament and politics come out in the dance.” Graf and Berg feature alongside five local Danish dancers – making the work a unique collaboration between two politically and

Performance Tivoli Cabaret

Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Sep 22; performances Tue-Thu 20:00, Thu-Sat 20:30; Tickets: 315-415kr; duration: 180 mins, www.tivolicabaret.dk Complete with little round tables and singers who double as waiting staff, Cabaret at Tivoli is an evening of light-hearted kitsch entertainment. Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not. Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB

culturally opposite countries. Exploring duality, the pair have also been influenced by the contrasts between their homeland Israel and the perceived utopia that is Denmark. “We have this curiosity coming from such an intruding place like Israel to this fairytale land that has been called the happiest place on earth,” Graf says. Playing on the notion of utopia and using it as a source of light against the production’s darker themes, the show provokes the audience to question their pursuit of a utopian world. “We like to ask questions to ourselves as dancers and our audience. What is utopia, how do we achieve it, and what obstacles do we encounter along the way?” Berg explains. The duo agrees, at least on a superficial level, that Copenhagen appears to be a good representation of a utopia. “Copenhagen is like a utopia with all its lakes and swans,” Graf says. But Black Fairytale delves beneath the shiny surface, exploring lesser discussed issues like prejudice or racism. “In Israel we are preoccupied with the lack of peace. In Denmark I found other problems – youth unemployment could be an example.” It is Berg and Graf ’s intention that the piece’s existential nature allows every audience member, no matter

The Tiger Lillies perform Hamlet

He’s alive and well in the form of Martyn Jacques of the Tiger Lillies, the court jester who has come back from the dead as a macabre musical muse to guide the audience through Republique theatre’s production of a sinful ‘Hamlet’ that is innovative, imaginative and incredible. whether they are Danish or foreign, to make their own connection to the show’s themes. Tying in references to other fairytales, the performance steers clear of labelling characters as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, rather highlighting that all people, in reality, have good and bad attributes. For instance, the scene named ‘Paradise’ contains black moments interspersed with the more predictable peaceful ones. The storytelling is achieved by incorporating a number of interesting elements including English text, singing and a musical soundtrack supplied by the Berlin-based Finnish composer Markus Pesonen. In their choreography, Graf and Berg place an emphasis on partner work and all seven dancers moving together as an ensemble. The duo began their partnership as choreographers in 2005 and say they have developed a fruitful working relationship that plays to each of their strengths. “We both have clear views about our art and know what we each like, but sometimes we surprise each other,” Berg says. They are likely to surprise you too – not all fairytales have to end ‘happily ever after’.

Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; ends Sat, performances Fri 20:00, Sat 15:00; Tickets: 150-360kr; 120 minutes with intermission; www.bettynansen.dk The creative team who brought you Bob Dylan and Come Together have taken on this pop interpretation of Mozart. It’s not for the purists, but rather a bold introduction to a new crowd of classical music groupies. Incorporating water cascading from out of nowhere, the cast of singers are literally gurgling their lyrics underwater. Imagine thousands of people crammed into your bathroom watching you sing along to Mozart renditions while splashing around in the tub. EB

CPH Beer Celebration Sparta Hallen, Østerport, Cph Ø; Fri & Sat 12:0023:00; sold out – check internet forums for tickets (original cost: 300kr per day); www.copenhagenbeercelebration.com MANY OF US look forward to enjoying an ice cool beer during the summer months but, for those Copenhageners with more discerning palettes, a certain weekend in midMay is like Christmas. Denmark has, for some years now, been enjoying an upsurge in beer appreciation, with microbreweries popping up everywhere, and this weekend sees our city play host to not just one true ‘celebration of beer’, but two. As per usual, the Copenhagen Beer Festival (see G8 for details) will be taking place for the 12th time at Tap 1 near the old Carlsberg brewery, but up the road in Østerbrø, placing emphasis on quality (just 250 beers to the festival’s 900, and 1,000 attendees to the festival’s 5,000), is the Copenhagen Beer Celebration. This new event, which is the brainchild of master brewer Mikkeller, showcases superior beer or beerderived products, featuring a lot of one-offs and obscure brews. Indeed, there’s little adherence to Janteloven here as organisers trumpet the event as “the single most greatest beer

International Theatre Festival

Caféteatret, Skindergade 3, Cph K; starts Mon, ends Thu; tickets 90kr, concessions 60kr, group tickets available, www.teaterbilletter.dk, 3312 5814; www. cafeteatret.dk; over 14s This new theatre festival focuses on contemporary international stage art with three handpicked performances by international female artists under the title Global Emotional Dialogue (GED). Sanja Mitrović performs the stand-up tragedy A Short Story of Crying (Mon 20:00 & Tue 19:00) asking if private space still exists in public. Brina Stinehelfer performs her intercontinental, international theatre piece Skype Duet (Wed & Thu 20:00) where two live performances – in New York and Copenhagen - are connected via Skype. Finally you can experience Anna Mendelssohn in her solo-climate-summit Cry me a River (Tue 20:30 & Thu 18:30) about the mediated world’s climate rhetoric. event in the whole world”. And they can afford to brag a little – it’s become a big cross on the calendars of beer lovers and breweries alike, attracting interest from both Denmark and further afield. At a cost of 300kr, each ticket entitles the owner to one day’s admittance (check dates as certain brewers are serving different beers on different days), their own 10 cl tasting glass, a handbook guide to all available beers, and a huge meal prepared by chef Jakob Mielcke of the famous restaurant Mielcke & Hurtigkarl. The dishes will either complement beer or contain beer as an ingredient. The samples are all on draught and priced according to the time and cost of brewing. Once inside, plastic tokens will be the currency – available in packs of seven (100kr), 15 (200kr) or 15kr each. If you fail to get a ticket in time, don’t despair – you can still sample many of the beers at the Mikkeller Bar (Victoriagade, Vesterbro) after the festival. The event proves to be increasingly popular every year, and popularity brings with it extra challenges – it means the task of containing great numbers of drinkers becomes more complicated. Organisers place a high priority on the enjoyment of their attendees, but don’t get carried away – they assert that festival security has a low tolerance on rowdy behaviour. Real beer connoisseurs take their drinking just as seriously

Balanchine & Stravinsky

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, 1055 Cph K; ends May 21; performances at 20:00 on Tue, May 19, May 21; tickets 95–595kr; introduction 45 min before every performance in the balcony foyer (in Danish); www.kglteater.dk The Royal Danish Ballet is celebrating the artistic collaboration between choreographer George Balanchine and composer Igor Stravinsky with a ballet evening in three parts: the early neoclassical Apollo, the tightly-knit Agon, and the jazzy Symphony in Three Movements. (sometimes more so) as their wineloving counterparts. For many the festival is seen as a reaction to the monopolisation of the super breweries – it’s not so much about the mass producing Carlsberg and the Tuborg beers you’re already familiar with (likely in attendance, but offering samples of their own new products), it’s about exploring the fascinating art of independent breweries and microbreweries and discovering something new and special. Expect a wide array of beers alongside some exciting new experiences you might not normally associate with beer, like some extraordinary combinations that you wouldn’t expect to work, but do. For example, the Coffee Collective will be bringing special roasts for mixing with stout ale, a combination that must be tried – while Farmers Cabinet has been working to integrate beer into cocktails – sometimes alongside the cocktail, sometimes inside it. Whatever your preconceptions, they promise to “rock your world”. While the exact line-up of beers has not yet been released (some are shrouded in secrecy), there’ll be 26 breweries in attendance for you to sample their wares, some Danish, some international – or as the organisers put it “250 beers from 26 of the greatest breweries in the world”. Clearly Janteloven just doesn’t mix with beer. MARK WALKER

T

he burial place of the Prophet Mohammed, the Saudi Arabian city of Medina, is the second holiest city in Islam. Not exactly a name you would associate with sexy dancing and revealing clothing. It is, however, the stage name of Andrea Fuente Alba Valbak, who is is often described as Denmark’s pop princess and has been called – among many others things – ‘the European Lady Gaga’. Her stage name was the reason Muslim youths pelted Medina with eggs during a 2010 concert in Ishøj. Her promotion manager, Martin Bergholt Buhl, told Jyllands-Posten newspaper that Medina chose the name for “personal reasons” and that it has nothing to do with Islam or Saudi Arabia. The name Medina is supposedly quite common in Chile, where the singer’s father comes from. The 29-year-old singer started her musical career in 2007, when she released her first singles ‘Flå’ (Rip) and ‘Et øjeblik’ (One moment), followed by her de-

but album Tæt på (Up close). It wasn’t until 2008 that she rose to national fame with the release of ‘Kun for mig’ (Only for me), the lead single off her second album Velkommen til Medina (Welcome to Medina). The single spent six weeks at number one on the Danish Singles Chart, eventually reaching triple-platinum status. Her second single off the album, Velkommen til Medina, also peaked at number one, spending five weeks at the top of the singles chart and achieving platinum status. Even Medina’s third and fourth singles, ‘Ensom’ (Lonely) and ‘Vi to’ (Us two), both reached the number two spot. After she had established a firm grip on Denmark, Medina decided that her home county was a little too small for her ambitions. In 2009, she widened her borders by releasing ‘You and I’, an English-language version of ‘Kun for mig, which entered the top-ten on the German Singles Chart. In July 2010, Medina’s international debut album, Welcome to Medina was released, which included seven new songs and English-language versions of the four singles off its Danish counterpart. “It’s perhaps not groundbreaking in any big way, since

you’ve probably heard a variation on the general theme of this song millions of times before, but this one is well-crafted enough to be counted among the better examples,” the BBC wrote when reviewing the album. Now is the time for this European Gaga to face up to the real deal. She’s now released the album – filled with songs about her bad relationship – in the US, looking to make a splash in the Land of Opportunity. “Welcome to Medina is finally seeing a release in the US, and it couldn’t come at a better time. With electronic music ruling the airwaves even more than it did during the 90s ‘electronica’ boom, this cohesive and seamless record is sure to be a hit amongst those who like a little emotion injected into their 4/4 beats,” American website about.com wrote. But, luckily for her fans in Denmark – Medina has not forgotten us. She’s back in Denmark for a gig in Tivoli – part of the Friday Rock concert series. And for those who are not a fan, at least we published a picture of a half-naked woman. You’re welcome. Mike Hofman

FRIDAY 11

Loppen; 21:00; 140kr Formed in the mid-2000s in Gothenburg, this group put Sweden on the rock map. Taking inspiration from the likes of The Stooges, MC5 and The Rolling Stones, they were a refreshing rock alternative at a time when Brit-pop ruled supreme – incidentally, the group found themselves touring with Oasis in the States in 2002. Ironically, perhaps their best record to date has been their latest, Throw It Into The Universe (2012) which opens with a formidable rock-anthem by the same name. Playing in the heart of Christiania, the setting couldn’t be better.

Review Ryan Adams May 7 Falconer Salen

A

side from writing a shedload of quality tunes, Ryan Adams has also provided one of the best musical soap operas of the last decade. Heroin and cocaine binges, injuring himself by falling off the stage and angry, self-righteous phone calls to critical journalists have helped lay the musician and the man bare alongside the 13 studio albums released since his debut in 2001. He would never have made it through the security gates at a serene Falconer Salen on a Monday night. Too much baggage. The very mixed crowd was wowed by Adams from the word go. Shuffling onstage looking like a pissed-off adolescent with open shirt and frothy hair, he launched straight into a stripped down version of ‘Oh My Sweet Carolina’. A couple of tracks from his latest album, 2011’s re-

Balkan Beat Box

Lille Vega; 21:00; 120kr If you get a buzz out of Balkan-inspired music then you’re spoiled for choice tonight with two of the best acts performing on opposite sides of town – Tako Lako at Vega and Balkan Beat Box at Pumpehuset. Hailed as one of the ‘potentially biggest Danish upcoming acts’ by MTV Denmark, the Copenhagen-based group pride themselves on their high-paced experimentation with age-old Balkan folk music samples. Winning the national stage of the talent contest, Emergenza, in 2008, Tako Lako are continuing to build on their growing reputation with their debut record, Through The Mud, due out this August.

turn-to-form Ashes and Fire then followed. Unlike when I saw him in 2005 (when he was, to use one of his track titles ‘drunk and f**ked up’), he seemed very much the at-peace former wild child, an artist who can now also delve into his musical archive without snagging unwanted memories on the way down. If he’s a modern-day Dylan on the guitar and harmonica, he’s an edgier Tom Waits on the ivory keyboard. A jaw-dropping version of ‘The Rescue Blues’ stirred from the piano midset, as did a successfully rockier ‘Winding Wheel’. ‘New York, New York’ and ‘Firecracker’ were two earlier, more upbeat tracks which also get the shaken up. “I’ll do a ballad now, we haven’t had many of those,” came the introduction to one song. At this point, oddly, begins a sideshow which saw Adams talk to the laughing crowd about an imaginary heavy metal band he’s in, and about monsters and aliens. Was it funny? Parts. Other bits were painful. However, this is the licence fans grant to Adams. Irritating and compelling in equal measure, it’s a

Pumphuset; 21:00; 100kr Hailing from New York, the Israeli-American world music band offers an energetic, wistful and original interpretation of, incidentally, indigenous Balkan beats. Importing musical elements from the Balkans, as well as guest musicians and singers from Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, their electro-based rhythms quake with dynamism and sheer energy. It comes as no surprise that this overwhelmingly powerful and passionate live act have repeatedly been nominated in a number of categories at the BBC’s prestigious World Music Awards. Pumphuset will be teeming with energy.

Bob Wayne + The Outlaw Carnies

Loppen; 21:00; 80kr; Rewriting the American country songbook with his timeless hillbilly style, talk of Tennessee and crooning vocals, Bob is one of the few remaining touring blue-collar country singers. Originally from Seattle, Bob and his group turn out catchy licks that transcend through the only instrument fitting for the job, the telecaster. A purveyor for ‘real’ country music – with country music as it was once known being turned inside out and incarnated into countless new sub-genres by modern artists – this is certainly worth seeing for those who know of Hank Williams III, to whom Bob was once a trusty guitar technician and support act.

SUNDAY 13

Rocket From The Tombs

Loppen; 21:00; 120kr Originally from Cleveland, the psychedelic-protopunk group flew the flag during the late ‘70s playing high-energy, acerbic, and ferociously liberating rock inspired by their rock heroes, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. Once rock legends on the American circuit – despite never actually recording an album until the ‘00s – the band gained their reputation through their blinding live performances. This is a concert that will certainly get the old free-town generation into Loppen, but their cathartic rock ‘n’ roll is as relevant now as it was during its hayday.

TIPI: Local Heroes Showcase Night

At the gig, Adams seemed at peace with his former inner wild child

sort of a glimpse into the mind’s eye of a flawed genius. You bear it because of the music. His penultimate song was his incredible cover of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ from his Love is Hell album. It’s a version that even Noel Gallagher himself once praised and Monday night it still sounded as tormented as ever. After this, and another stoned-teenager-in-bedroom moment where he spent five full minutes moving his table items across the stage, he returned for a two-song encore, ending with the rousing ‘Come Pick Me Up’. Everyone around my age in

the crowd has grown up with Ryan Adams whether they know it or not – though not everyone has now got their shit together in the same way. 2012’s Adams is a more mature one who has reprised his songwriting ability and honesty. The evening’s show, and with it his guitar playing and gravelly voice, was faultless despite not being his best, and everyone in Falconer Salen, whether passing or more involved fans, was hooked. This soap opera has taken an absorbing new twist. Simon Cooper

WEDNESDAY 16

Baby Woodrose

Loppen; 21:00; 120kr; Offering a lucid, fuzzy and upbeat brand of psychedelic punk-rock, their band-name, taken from the hallucinogenic Hawaiian Baby Woodrose plant, couldn’t be more fitting. The trio emerged with the moody hit record, Money For Soul (2003). Having since submerged underground, the diligent psychedelic rockers have quietly released their eighthstudio album this year, Mindblowing Seeds & Disconnected Flowers (2011). A complex layering of reverb, distortion and heavy garage-rock elements, the bustling compilation is a bold, fervent and danceable psychrock masterpiece. Daniel van der Noon

Tonight is the club night Juice – Copenhagen’s biggest UKgarage and post-dubstep night. A batch of local deejays are in line to play sets as well as one of London’s most talked about garage DJs – the up-and-coming 22-year-old Lil Silva. Becoming

an increasingly big figure in the underground scene, Lil is making waves on the funk, grime and dub scene back in the UK, renowned for her imaginative work in the London dub-scene.

Acid Eyes #2

Fri 21:00; Bakken; free adm Paying homage to the glory days that spoiled a generation – acid house – Bakken is welcoming a host of emerging DJs to the fore with their own innovative spin on the classics. This is the second installation of the hyped club-night. One of the most popular weekend venues in the stylish Kødbyen district of Vesterbro – often thought of as Copenhagen’s grimy answer to Berlin’s club scene – Bakken is a good distance away from the mainstream clubs nearer the centre and offers a genuine insight into the city’s underground scene. For any new students in town, or for that matter, anyone with energy to burn, make your way here at the stroke of midnight. A queue is likely.

MUSEUMS CORNER BY MIA RAMSING (TRANSLATED BY CATHRINE MEJDAL)

In Struensee’s footsteps POWER, decadence, luxurious dresses and a bloody execution – this is the story of Johann Friedrich Struensee, the royal physician whose affair with the Danish queen is the subject of En kongelig affære (A Royal Affair), a film currently out at the cinema starring Mads Mikkelsen as the eponymous antihero. The ill-fated love triangle between the mad Christian VII, his queen Caroline Mathilde, and Struensee, coupled with the physician’s desire to change Denmark politically bore dire consequences for them all. In April 1772, Struensee paid the ultimate price for his ambitions: his life. The king divorced Caroline Mathilde and she was sent to exile. She never saw her children again and died when she was only 23 years old. You can come closer to one of the most dramatic events in Denmark’s history at the museums. Kulturklik has composed a collection of good pointers for a trip in the footsteps of Caroline Mathilde and Struensee. Feel the presence of the love story and time travel back to life at the court of King Christian VII and the vicious execution of Struensee. The Last Summer of Struensee and Caroline Mathilde Far away from Copenhagen, in a time filled with royal formalities, the court of Christian VII spent an entire summer at Hirschholm Castle in 1771. Caroline Mathilde and Struensee were able to escape the royal etiquette and the slander and live out their affair. After the fall of Struensee, the castle was never really used again, and after many years of degeneration, it was finally torn down in 1810. At Hørsholms Egns Museum you can size up the beautiful castle, which was once called ‘The Versailles of the North’ thanks to its many paintings, mock-ups and blueprints, plus a few collector’s items from the castle. This May there is a new exhibition, ‘Rococo-mania’, which is going to centre around a dialogue between the styles of the 17th century, and the art and design of the present. The executioner’s axe On 28 April 1772 a chained Struensee was led up to Østerfælled where thousands upon thousands of people had turned up for the execution. First Struensee’s right hand was chopped off, then his head, whereupon his body was parted and his head was put on a skewer and put on display. At the National Museum of Denmark you can view the executioner’s axe, which is said to have not parted the head from the body until the third stroke. If you want to know more about Struensee, you can also visit the exhibition Struensee, Love, Insanity, Idealism at The State Archives.

You get to fight the power of the sea, save someone who has fallen overboard from a ship and experience giant surf waves. This is an event for the entire family with a chance to learn more about water safety in a fun way. MSØ

WHEN TANGO was basic tango, it initially resembled something similar to S & M, with women on the receiving end, often tossed to the ground in a passionate gesture. Born in the poorest Argentinean barrios, excitingly on the edge of the slaughterhouse area of Buenos Aires, it moved up to the fashionable salons of Paris in the early 20th century, becoming a popular ballroom dance. But over the last couple of decades it has become such a vogue – both for exhibition and for people who just want to learn it – that there are tango festivals worldwide. Movies like British director Sally Potter’s The Tango Lesson, American star Robert Duvall’s Assassination Tango, and Broadway’s Tango Argentina, along with the hugely successful Strictly Come Dancing franchise, fuelled the flames, which was already hot enough to begin with. And now the throwdowns have been replaced by clever swirly kickbacks and twists through a partner’s legs: a more highly co-ordinated, egalitarian and elegant, pairing of the male and female dancers. Copenhagen is one of many cities (and countries) to showcase tango festivals (it has most recently become a huge phenomenon in the Middle East!), but Tango Copenhagen is special: a non-profit festival, run by the Copenhagen Tango Society, which simply intends to promote the tango. To add irony to the hot part, the ‘milonga’ evening – meaning the place of the social gathering for the tango, though the word also describes a faster rhythmic beat – will be held in an old steam heat-

Goggle and Goggle Prim are clothing stores selling some of the coolest brands for both men and women, like Won hundred, NN.07, Acne and Cheap Monday. There’s a good vibe at the stores and always a friendly service. ing factory that was used to supply heat for the nearby hospital. It can now accommodate 650 dancers and is at Kedelhallen Nyelandsvej 75, Frederiksberg. Tickets are sold at the entrance - for members of Tango Copenhagen 140kr, for non-members 160kr. The afternoon milongas are free, which is nice, though doesn’t it seem the tango should be danced at night? They will take place from Thursday until Saturday from 14:00 until 20:00 in the city centre at Kulturhuset Indre By, Charlotte Ammundsens Plads 3 (Ahlefeldtsgade 33). Topping off the event is something the festival organisers are particularly proud of: the ‘Cool down Milonga’, which they say is unique to Tango Copenhagen – a long, intimate, laid-back milonga which closes down the festival at midnight. Members pay 110kr, non-members 130kr. Throughout the festival, tango danc-

ers from 24 countries will be showing off their talent, including some big-name duos of the tango world: Esteban Moreno and Claudia Codega, Fausto Carpino and Stephanie Fesneau, Pablo Inza and Mariana Dragone, and Daniel Carlsson and Sigrid Van Tilbeurgh. Music will be performed by Orquesto Silenci, and among the disc jockeys on the stage will be well-known Barbel Rucker as well as Bianca, Sabine, Thomas Zelikman, Lene, Giuseppe, Tommaso Fiorilli and Sigrid van Tilbeurgh. To see how your body and spirit fit into the intense melodrama of the tango matrix, you can take an introductory class every day of the festival from 20:00 to 21:30, also at Kedelhallen Nyelandsvej 75, Frederiksberg. The Best Blueberry Muffins

eatingindenmark.blogspot.org

MUFFINS: 1 pint fresh/frozen blueberries 200g & 5g granulated sugar 275g flour 8g baking powder 2 large eggs, 5g salt 60g unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 60g vegetable oil 240ml buttermilk 8ml vanilla extract LEMON SUGAR TOPPING: 80ml granulated sugar zest from one lemon

BY STACI MENARD

HERE IS ONE of my favourite go-to quick breads. There is no yeast involved, hence the name quick. There are plenty of muffins to be found in Denmark, but far more common are boller and rundstykker, both of which require vast quantities of yeast and rising time. Muffins can be mixed up in mere minutes. And while I would never discount the power of soft, chewy pillows of yeasty bread, there is something very special about muffins studded with fruit, nuts, or chocolate. They are a great addition to weekend brunch and also make an irresistible snack.

And don’t forget that the options are limitless when you make your own muffins. When I need to up the wow factor on my muffins, I drizzle a tantalising lemoninfused sugar mix on top before baking. The key to perfectly moist and tender muffins is twofold: buttermilk and a gentle hand. If anything, err on the side of under mixing (some lumps of dry flour are okay in this case) to achieve a soft, light texture. The muffin directions may seem a tad involved, but I assure you the steps are child’s play.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Whisk dry ingredients together in large bowl. Add remaining berries and stir gently to coat in flour. In another bowl, whisk 200g of sugar and eggs. Slowly whisk in butter and oil and mix well. Whisk in buttermilk and vanilla. Fold wet ingredients into dry mix until just moistened. The batter will be lumpy with spots of dry flour; do not over mix. Divide batter evenly among muffin cups lined with paper muffin liners (3/4 full). Put a small spoonful of the cooked berry mixture into the centre of each and push gently below the surface. Using a chopstick or skewer, carefully swirl the berry jam into the batter. Sprinkle each muffin with lemon sugar topping. Bake until muffin tops are golden and just firm (15-20 minutes). Cool in tin for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool for 5 more minutes before serving.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. Meaty, hearty fare a splendid sight for hungry eyes HUNGARIAN cuisine: does it ring a bell? What do you imagine when you hear these words? Most of us probably don’t think of much more than goulash and heavy use of paprika, right? In fact, Hungarian food is much more than that. It’s an exciting melting pot of tastes, influenced by the cuisines of its geographical neighbours – Austria, Slovakia and the Balkans – from the time when all these countries were part of the Austro–Hungarian Empire. So, if you are not a vegetarian on a diet, but rather a fan of hearty soups, stews and casseroles (and meat in particular), Bock Bistro & Vinotek is something you should definitely not miss out on. The owners of this fantastic establishment are no strangers to the restaurant business. Peter Sarvari, who is one of the co-owners and a sommelier by profession, has been importing Hungarian wines to Denmark since 2007 – he knows a lot about them. We were very lucky to have him as our host during the evening we decided to dine there, and we have frequent cause to mention how good a decision it was to let him select all the wines that went with our dishes. We started with Hungaria, a Champagne-like sparkling wine based on Chardonnay. It was nicely lively on the tongue and delicately sweet. The drink was soon followed by a surprise starter from the chef Krisztian Balogh – an opening salvo that, as we learnt, changes every night, according to the available ingredients. It was a ‘frikadelle’ made of red fish and wasabi mayo, which unlike the Danish version was made of whole fish meat, not minced. Our real starter then followed: Carpaccio with baked fois gras – a very famous local delicacy in Hungary. The two dominant tastes were very strong, but went surprisingly well together; however, no-one would probably be able to eat more than half a portion of this, because it was incredibly filling. All the starters on the menu were very tempting. For those of you not so familiar with Hungarian food, I would definitely recommend trying Lecso with smoked sausage – a sort of ragout with bell peppers, which is one of the basic dishes that every Hungarian grandma makes. Tastes like heaven, especially in cold Danish weather. The dish was accompanied by Hungary’s most famous red wine, Egri Bikaver, which translates as Bull’s Blood from Eger. The wine, made of a special blend of grape varieties from northern Hungary,

One glance at the oak interior and the last thing you’ll want is a salad

predominantly Kekfrankos, is deep, spicy and velvety and goes best with heavy meat dishes. This is the case with the Blood sausage – another sturdy local dish that is unfortunately only on the menu during winter months, as it is traditionally eaten especially around Christmas time in Hungary. But you can try your luck and ask the manager whether they can serve you a piece. This dish is unique and you will remember its powerful and specific taste long after. Our main dish was the Fillet of veal a la Kedvessy with homemade gnocchi,

mushroom ragout, creamy dill and paprika sauce. Sounds very elaborate, but the taste was superb, the meat incredibly tender and the gnocchi much heavier than the Italian variety, which went perfectly with the creamy, herby sauce. No matter what you choose for dessert, do not forget to order a glass of Tokaji Aszu, a sweet wine and pretty much a dessert in itself. A wine with an enviable, well deserved reputation is part of the Hungarian national treasure, and if you are curious about the taste, do not hesitate to ask the restaurant manager about how is it

made – you might appreciate it even more afterwards. Dag Hammarskjölds Alle is a peculiar street through which you normally just swing by on your bike on the way from the centre to Østerbro or vice-versa. There was absolutely no reason to stop, unless you were going to the US Embassy. However, since last November, when the doors to the newly-established Bock Bistro & Vinoteak opened, there is now a very good reason to go astray.

Wood you believe it: a horror everyone can enjoy KEVIN EVANCIO

The Cabin in the Woods

Dir: Drew Goddards; US horror, 2012, 95 mins; Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams, Chris Hemsworth, Fran Kranz, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchison, Brian White, Amy Acker

Premieres May 10 Playing nationwide

I

AM SURE you’ve all heard of the term ‘gender bender’. However, the term ‘genre bender’ (copyright Kevin Evancio, 2012) best aptly describes the latest from writer/director Drew Goddards and his mentor co-writer Joss Whedon. They worked together on the TV shows Buffy and Angel and bring the same sort of horror feel (more stylised and refined than all-out gore) to The Cabin in the Woods. But to classify it simply as a run-of-the-mill horror film does it a great injustice. One would not be totally incorrect if you described The Cabin… as a comedy. Or a drama. Or even a social commentary. It does such an extremely good job combining humour, characterisation and social poignancy with horror that it is difficult to call it JUST a horror film. It has, in fact, more genuine comedic moments in it than some of the all-out comedic films I have reviewed in the past. The movie opens oddly, for a horror film, in a military looking facility as two older white collar employees are chatting away as if they were apprenticing for a character on The Office. Follow this up immediately with the movie’s title in bold blood red and you get the idea that there are bound to be sudden jerks in perspective throughout the film. It’s these types of juxtapositions that work in good comedic films that Goddard and

Is she a woman trapped in a man’s body, or vice-versa? Someone mentioned gender-bender and I’m all confused Whedon have put to excellent use in The Cabin… The actual Cabin-bound crew make for the perfect stereotypical horror film eye candy. There is Chris Hemsworth as Curt, the stud athlete, and his good looking and trampy girlfriend Jules (Hutchison). They bring along their brainy nice guy friend, Holden (Williams), in hopes that he may match up with their conservative bookworm friend Dana (Connelly). Finally there is stoner-dude Marty who may actually have something inside his head other than simply pot

smoke. The difference here is that this script rounds them out into characters (some with surprises) that we the audience actually care about. The Cabin… only works if we care about what is happening and to whom. The reason they go up to the cabin is rather weak, but it doesn’t really matter once they are on their way - although it is rather strange that someone sitting on the roof reports to his superiors that they are en route to the cabin. Meanwhile, we switch back to those two earlier water cooler guys, Sitterson (Jenkins) and Hadley

(Whitford), settling into work as the kids get closer to the cabin. While their workstation looks like an early version of a NASA control room, their job tasks have anything but to do with outer space. By far the film’s best moments belong to Jenkins and Whitford, who bring with them proven acting track records and absolutely nail their parts. Goddards hit a home run in casting them. They really do make the movie. Plus, all of Goddards’ careful buildup leads to an immensely satisfying payoff: the kind that doesn’t really

exist in mainstream modern horror anymore. This movie is a proverbial feather in his cap for Goddards. The Cabin in the Woods has a number of amusing twists and surprises, and to share them all would rob the moviegoer of the pleasures experiencing them themselves. And unlike some horror movies that are considered comedic because the films are so bad, The Cabin… is funny and thought-provoking by design. Finally, a horror movie that everyone can, and should see.

A little long but within lies a nice surprise DANISH FILM INstITUTE / IN THE HEART OF COPENHAGEN

ITTLE WHITE LIES is a brilliant mix of comedy and drama, and lightheartedness and seriousness. Writer and director Guillaume Canet, known for Tell No One, has assembled a fantastic group of actors and created what is a great story about friendship and all that it entails. The titu-

lar white lies are the lies we tell ourselves and others – to feel better, to bury uncomfortable truths, to forget about painful realities. However, in a tightlyknit group of friends, such as we see on screen, they tend to surface and blow up in their faces. Especially when they have experienced a shock that is the hospitalisation of one of their friends (Dujardin, in colour!) Despite that, they travel from Paris for their annual holidays at the seaside. All with their own secrets and troubles that lead to some very emotional scenes. The chemistry between the actors and, by extension, the characters they portray, is tan-

gible and incredibly authentic, partly because they are friends in real life, partly because they got the opportunity to hang out together on the set prior to filming, so they got the feel of the place and established certain dynamics within the group. Max, played by Cluzet, is a particularly interesting character - he’s very ambiguous and dealing with a lot of emotions. In fact, all the characters have such distinct personalities that everyone can find one to root for or relate to. The balance between comedy and drama is established pretty well. The film is serious when it needs to be, but doesn’t just flood us with gloom.

The sober scenes are quickly followed by amusing ones, and the humour is not forced, a big plus for seemingly not trying to be funny. The soundtrack is amazing – it’s clear it was chosen very carefully. It features some wellknown names, for example: Bowie, Joplin, Bonnie Tyler, etc. Sometimes the songs are played instead of dialogue and it works well. The direction and acting was superb. Little While Lies shows a realistic vision of adult friendships with enough drama and humour to sit well with a variety of viewers. DIANA CERENIEWICZ

11 - 17 May 2012

New this Week La Délicatesse Dir: David Foenkinos, Stéphane Foenkinos; Fra comedy, 2011, 108 mins; Audrey Tautou, François Damiens and Bruno Todeschini Nathalie (Audrey Tautou) is left devastated after the death of her new husband Francois (Pio Marmai) and spends the next three years mourning him, in a daze, floating through life. One day unexpectedly she kisses a new colleague of hers, Markus (Francois Damiens), an unattractive, balding Swede in an act that leaves him perplexed and creates tensions at work. From its very title, it’s clear that La Délicatesse (Delicacy) aims to be a sweet, light French trifle. Which it is, but little more. MH

Book Your Tickets Shame (15) Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

The Ides of March (3)

Battleship (15)

Dir: George Clooney; US drama, 2011, 101 mins; Geore Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti Initially, the film seems too sleek. But then the film takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. LD

Dir: Peter Berg; US sci-fi action, 2012, 130 mins; Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson This film is terribly clichéd, the characters are generally underdeveloped, the acting was bad, and there basically is no storyline. LD

The Avengers (11) Dir: John Whedon; US action sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston The Avengers is for Marvel what Dark Night was for DC Whedon has scored the crowning achievement for Marvel Studio’s interconnected universe.

Avoid like the Plague Iron Sky (15) Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse. Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. MW

Haywire (15) Dir: Steven Soderbergh; US action, 2011, 93 mins; Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender Sadly, this film has come too soon for Carano, who undoubtly has promise. She needs to fine-tune her delivery, learn her craft in a few supporting parts, and her break will come in a superhero flick. And as for Soderbergh, this film came along too late. Five years ago, it would have been slick and cool and we would all been praising a work of ‘minimalista azione’. BH

Journey to the Mysterious Island (11) Dir: Brad Peyton; US sci-fi action, 2012, 94 mins; Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens This is one of those 50kr family adventure movies that you might consider picking up from the DVD box on the counter in the gas station if only to keep the kids entertained for the rest of the drive. My advice would be: DON’T. MW

Act of Valour (15) Dir: Mike McCoy; US action, 2012, 101 mins; Roselyn Sánchez, Nestor Serrano, Emilio Rivera Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs in a story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. While Act of Valour might work as a recruiting poster for impressionable teenagers, it still is a distasteful and foolish film. MH

Dark Shadows (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson There is absolutely nothing dark about this film and the only thing lurking in the shadow is a huge amount of wasted potential. A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Also Playing We Need to Talk About Kevin (7) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

American Pie (7)

The Hunger Games (11)

Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film - so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH

The Lady (11) Dir: Luc Besson; Fra/UK drama, 2012, 135 mins; Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Woodhouse The Lady is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. It is also the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement. Besson does draw the best out of his two leads, and the subject is an extraordinary woman. So why is it such an ordinary film? MH

Chronicle (15) Dir: Josh Trank; US sci-fi action, 2012, 83 mins; Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Michael Kelly, Alex Russell Three high school students make an incredible discovery, giving them superpowers. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. This film puts a fresh spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again. MH

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (3) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson A disapointing familiar form with surprisingly charming content. Take your mum. MW

Terraferma (11) Dir: Emanuele Crialese; Ita drama, 2011, 88 mins; Filippo Pucillo, Donatella Finocchiaro, Mimmo Cuticcio This film is quietly powerful without any tacky effets. It probably won’t appeal to everyone, precisely because of that. DC

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. PICK O THE W F EEK

Birdsong SV1, Sun 21:00

TWO COMPELLING dramas about emotive subjects lead our lineup – not the kind of material you make light of, but we’ll do our best. Birdsong is a two part miniseries adaptation (penned by Abi Morgan who wrote Shame) of the 1993 First World War novel by Sebastian Faulks, which premiered in the UK in January. Most soldiers were haunted by that conflict. Not our hero – he goes into it haunted by a romance he had with some drippy French sort. Still, it’s supposed to be good. “It does the book proud,” says the Daily Telegraph. “No-one has the right to look this good after being blown up,” the Guardian said about the lead, a former model. But it conceded it was “intense and moving, and an extraordinary portrait of

war” that left “a bloody great lump in the throat”. A bit like Inside Deep Throat (DR2, Tue 21:00), but how far do we want to go – sounds a bit murky. That might be the reaction to Five Daughters (SV2, Mon 22:45), a real-life drama set in Ipswich, England in 2006. Written by Stephen Butchard (House of Saddam), it’s a bit like acclaimed British series Clocking Off, but this kitchen sink miniseries is going to feature the murder of a prostitute – five of them. The media were fixated with the prostitute angle, forgetting the somebody’s children reality – this drama seeks to address it. “It humanises it,” praised the Guardian. The first victim is “now not just a grainy CCTV picture; she’s a person who had a story, a future, a family,

a mother” – although it might distract you to learn she’s played by Ray Winstone’s daughter. The Guardian thought the parts were “beautifully written”, with Winston and Sarah Lancashire giving career-best performances. Elsewhere, there’s another chance to see jolly hockey sticks miniseries South Riding (SV1, SV1, Sun 21:00 Birdsong Mon 22:45); Jack Dee is back with the fourth series of Lead Balloon (SV2, Mon 19:30); Edward VII does the dirty on his Danish queen in Edward - King of Pleasure (DRK, Mon 19:05); and Lesbian Vampire Killers (DRHD, Sat 22:10) is a ridiculous horror starring the sex-starved Essex boys from Gavin and Stacey as a couple of sexstarved Essex boys.
