BEN HAMILTON

I’M A DEBONAIR WWII pilot whose life expectancy is 30 minutes, I’m a 1970s porn star who named himself after a kitchen aid, I’m Douglas Fairbanks Junior! Sure, I’m trying to look on the bright side. Less than ten days of Movember to go and I can’t wait to shave my moustache off, but it’s been an interesting experience. It’s a bit like when you have a crew cut, or win the lottery – women you’d never have imagined would be your type start paying you attention. Most of them are in their 50s and look border-line certifiable, but there’s something to be said for growing one if you’re at a loose end or on a losing streak. Those matinee idols couldn’t have all been wrong. It’s not like mine is anything to write home about. But at least I’m dark-haired – I’ve seen some blonde efforts that make me look like Lord Kitchener. Talking of my rivals, all 7,463 of them – fingers crossed I remain in the top 50 fundraisers in the country – I’m surprised how many of them are also growing beards. It’s

not Becember! How are you going to draw attention to men’s health problems if people you know just assume you’ve become a hipster. And besides, you’re missing out on all those deranged women out there. Put a poppy on and you’ll be irresistible down the British Legion. But if the beard look is something of a permanent fixture on your front door, then you should give our new Underground column on page G8 a whirl. I’d like to tell you that I met its writer, Alexis Robiou, smuggling drugs on the Malawi-Mozambique border, or at least running an ostrich farm in the foothills of Ahwatukee. He’s the type of guy who would take you aside and tell you about The Beach. Sadly the truth is mundane, but fortunately for us he’s set down roots here and and will be filling us in on all the movers and shakers in the alternative scene in his tri-weekly column. And while we’re at it, please find the time to read this week’s Select Shopping, which includes information on all the trendy Christmas markets taking place over the next ten days – the one that your friend’s hubby’s sister went to and bought that exquisite trinket you’ve been enviously eyeing ever since. A bit like the way the lads in my office look at my moustache. Or are they just trying to work out what I had for breakfast?

Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 14-24, 1799 Cph V; performances at 20:00 on Fri, 17:00 and 20:00 on Sat; tickets 175kr, 105kr for under 25-year-olds; www. dansehallerne.dk ENCHANTINGLY beautiful, imaginative, poetic, humorous and precisely choreographed were attributes with which critics praised Tina Tarpgaard’s Frost when it premiered in October 2009. The piece was choreographed for Dansk Danseteater whose dancers also perform Frost’s revival in Dansehallerne this autumn. After its premiere Frost won the prestigious Reumert Performing Arts Award for the year’s best dance performance. “Dancers don’t tend to resemble young polar bears. Just as the stage floor doesn’t usually resemble ice floes,” noted the jury. “But that’s how it was in Frost. And the dancers got wet paws, while the glacial poetry melted into this season’s most beautiful waltz.” The 39 year-old choreographer Tarpgaard was educated in both classical ballet and modern dance at the Swiss Rudra-Béjart School and the Rambert School in England. She is a founding member of the Copen-

hagen-based Recoil Performance Group. Together with a composer, Tarpgaard established the group in 2003 to facilitate collaborations between different art forms. For Frost, as for other recent works, Tarpgaard has focused on the meeting between dance and digital visual art and worked with the ‘software artists’ Ole Kristensen and Jonas Jongejan. “Through dance, live video and electronic sound”, it is the Recoil group’s declared aim to create performances that “explore technology as an equal and interactive partner to the performing artist”. “We work with tracking technology and the intricacies of interactive software on stage because it enables us to create dynamic places and environments that depend on human presence,” explains Kristensen. Jongejan insists that while software programming can be a powerful tool to serve a certain purpose in art, he has no interest in it as an end in itself. In creating a performance, Tarpgaard and her collaborators look for a balance between the motion responsive space and the more direct physicality of bodies dancing in it. For the choreography of Frost, Tarpgaard makes use of the dancers’ versatility in both ballet and modern dance techniques. And

Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; starts Sat, ends Jan 15, performances Sat 17:00, Mon, Tue &Thu 20:00; tickets: 150–360kr; www.bettynansen.dk The team behind the theatre gigs Gasolin’, Come Together and Bob Dylan are back. They’ve been given the ultimate challenge – to create a theatre show based on Mozart’s music. Rediscover Mozart’s big hits in a new guise with some fantastic singers and actors. EM

the use of technology adds another dimension to the choreography: graphic projections trace motion in space and thus visualise them beyond their fleeting moment of performance. A specially developed software freezes imprints of the dancers’ movements and lets them remain in space like digital sculptures. This is quite an addendum for dance: the art form is traditionally characterised by its ephemerality and has no widely-established notational systems for movements. Given this specificity of dance, it is unsurprising that Tarpgaard and her collaborators are in illustrious international company when they work with visualising movement independently from the dancers’ bodies. But movement isn’t just traced in Frost. Rather, the graphic projections develop a life of their own and interact with the dancers as independent entities. And sound is yet another element that both the video scenography and the dancers’ movements respond to. Jens Hørsving has composed most of it, but Tarpgaard also choreographs a duet to Leonard Cohen’s Take this Waltz.

Described as a reinterpretation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Bollywood Trip is a love story told via musical comedy that takes the audience through the vast range of human emotions as felt by the deranged star, Haroon. The performance fuses Bollywood dancing and Danish humour a tactic not often seen on the Denmark stages. “Our starting point is a Danish, dry, dogma culture that we slowly start to drip a Bollywood universe into,” Parminder Singh, who wrote the script, told Politiken newspa-

per. Award winning stage director Rolf Heim has joined forces with one of the leading modern Kathak choreographers, British-Indian Gauri Sharma Tripathi, to stage Singh’s work, while musician and composer Stephan Grabowski and his band perform the live accompanying music. The story begins with Haroon, played by Janus Nabil Bakrawi, ending up in a psychiatric ward in Denmark, under the belief that he is Bollywood’s biggest star. His doctors, however, have a different idea and think he suffers from megalomania and delusions of grandeur. They prescribe him therapy and heavy medication and, following a recommendation from Morten Staugaard’s pompous character, electroshock treatment to bring Haroon crashing back to reality. The larger-than-life, identityless likeable lead commands the audience’s attention with his booming voice and provocative dance moves as the viewers learn what demons hide behind his vibrant façade as he dodges treatment and tells his story. Meant to tackle the drama of hiding true feelings, The Bollywood Trip contrasts Haroon’s overt sexuality with the shy romantic feelings that resident psychiatrist Jens, played by Thomas Corneliussen, has for

struments, making the overall feel of the performance much more authentic and believable. Bakrawi himself is a DanishIndian man able to identify with his character’s feelings of

Morten Gersager Abel and Søren Bjørn, who were inspired by the story of a 20th century magician and his magic trick involving a handgun, curated the exhibition. Not only did the magician play a trick on his audience by pretending to catch a bullet between his teeth every night, he was also pretending to be a Chinese citizen who could not speak English, when in fact he was an American who spoke perfect English. With this exhibition, the curators are interested in drawing out several different layers of falsehood and what that could mean when interpreted in an artwork. BF

Music so uniquely Scandinavian, it’s part of our landscape Trentemøller

Den Gra Hal Friday 21:00; 300 kr www.billetlugen.dk www.anderstrentemoller.com

A

s far as Danish electro goes, Anders Trentemøller is the godfather. The 36-year-old exemplifies what it means to be a modern Danish musician, with his spacious and airy brand of electro both a product and a reflection of his surroundings. His is a music so uniquely Scandinavian it’s become a part of the landscape. His tracks continue to be remixed, and his focus on staying fresh sees him change and evolve with every release. Based in Copenhagen, Trentemøller first found exposure through the Berlin producer Steve Bug, who released the 12-inch single ‘Physical Fraction’ through his Automatique label. There followed three successive singles that were applauded for their originality, and by 2006 Trentemøller was ready to release his first full-length album. Consisting of 13 instrumental tracks, The Last Resort was received well around the world, earning him considerable international radio play as well as several album of the year awards. The tour that followed included festivals such as Glastonbury, Melt and Roskilde and saw Trentemøller introduce live musicians into his stage show.

Trentemøller’s music seems to reflect the clean minimalism of Scandinavia itself. Spacious, yet dense and with just the right amount of mystique, the instruments he employs overlap and complement each other, all underscored by deliberately simple percussion. His songs carry set emotions, but we’re made to guess exactly what they could be. More than anything, his music is imbued with feeling and a very definite sense of striving towards something. Although many of his songs would be suitable to a dance club, most are more intellectual and carefully constructed to give room for pause. Last year saw the release of his second album ‘Into the Great Wide Yonder’. Not wanting to reproduce his first album again, Trentemøller has left much of the moody synthesisers behind in favour of more live guitars and vocals. The first single of the album, ‘Sycamore Feeling’, features Danish singer-songwriter Marie Fisker, and the album includes other collaborations with artists including Fyfe Dangerfield, Solveig Sandnes and Josephine Philip. Into the Great Wide Yonder was a brave departure from what Trentemøller

is known for and this reflects his willingness to adapt and change. The album manages to combine a collage of genres that reflect his own tastes and all seem to blend seamlessly. It’s this dynamism and experimentation that keep this artist interesting and make him impossible to pigeon hole. There’s a definite focus on the artistic in Trentemøller’s music, and this is reflected in the visuals that accompany him when he plays live. It’s not uncommon for the large screens set up behind the band to play videos that are both strange and unique, a visual representation of the music itself. Employing video directors such as Karim Ghahwagi, Trentemøller aims to create a more rounded sensory experience designed to engross his audience. This year has seen the release of an album that features some of the best remixes Trentemøller has done of his own work, as well as that of other artists. He changes and morphs some well-known tracks into ones that are barely recognisable – testament to the skill he has behind the mixing desk. With a full support band and an array of live goodies, Trentemøller will be sure to impress. Andy Rugg

Loppen; 21:00; 75kr The four-bit Norwegian band are renowned for their euphoric brand of electro-rock. Heavily influenced by the likes of New Order, Kraftwerk and Joy Division, they jigsaw together a synth-throbbing style of sound that saw the group catapult to stardom following the release of the single ‘Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone)’. After a four-year long hiatus, the synth-rock quartet have returned to the stage with a new batch of songs from their latest record 120 Days II (2011), which has of course been warmly received by their followers. Review Foster the People HHHHHH

November 16 Store Vega

I

f anybody happened to be wandering by Store Vega on Wednesday night last week, they would have felt the ground quiver beneath their feet due to the sheer force of the nearby concert. The American indie pop band ‘Foster and the People’ was formed like a ‘coming of age’ story between friends Mark Foster and Mark Pontius, whose years of effort to make it musically finally paid off with the band’s success. The addition of a third member, Cubbie Fink, led to them dropping the ‘and’, and it wasn’t long before they had started touring Europe in their bid to establish themselves as a band of international renown. With all the lights dimmed, and anticipation running thick through the crowd, the band finally burst onto stage after a nearly 45-minute wait between the acts. In an instant, everyone

Tamikrest

Global; 21:00; 90kr All the way from Mali – Azawad to be precise, the non-officially recognised name for the Tamashek-speaking parts of northern Mali – the collective have been hailed as purveyors of the emerging psychedelic desert rock genre. With the rising popularity of native African music, such indigenous groups are now becoming increasingly popular on the European touring circuit and are admired for their diversity and dynamism. Tamikrest are definitely worth experiencing if you’re in Nørrebro tonight, particularly if you’re on the look-out for something a little different. (Tamashek) DvdN began jumping and screaming along to the heavy beats exploding from the drum set and electrifying keyboards of the opening number, ‘Houdini’. Launching right into the darker, keyboardheavy ‘Miss You’, Foster the People commanded the stage and got their 55-minute set off to a vibrant start. Foster’s helium-infused voice and sporadic dance moves were almost enough to distract us from the monstrosity growing on his upper lip. Clearly he is a fully-fledged participant in ‘Movember’. However, despite his choice in hairstyle, Foster and his people moved easily around the stage, feeding off the crowd’s immense energy, giving everyone much more to focus on than his facial hair. After the first few songs, the group took a moment to catch their breath and moved into a progressive rock-type, synthesiser-infused introduction for ‘I Would Do Anything’ – an intriguingly pleasant addition to create a different feel and give some stage-style to their smooth album recordings. Suddenly, the stage was filled with a purple haze as the

Forbrændingen; 21:00; 120kr; The all-Danish trio’s self-titled debut record released earlier this year is neatly packaged as sunkissed sugar-pop, with each of the 10 tracks beaming with joyous, chirpy and rhythmic melodies; not a cloud in the sky. Take a listen to their hit single release ‘Facing the Sun’ and you’ll most likely be won over. Now signed to the colossal record label Bella Union, the group have become purveyors of Aarhus’s ever-growing alternative scene, and this will prove to be an immensley popular gig. (English) DvdN

Loppen; 21:00, 120kr Hailing from Tokyo, the instrumental trio are recognised for their cataclysmic soups of sound. Pitched as an experimental post-punk revival group, their relentless compositions borrow as much from the likes of The Velvet Underground as they do Sonic Youth, colliding bass pedals with curious chirps of synthesisers. Pummelling drums, incessant snares and walls of distortion make up the general aesthetic of their music, which has gone on to gain a substantial international following and has heavily impacted on the direction of the post-punk genre. Our Broken Garden

Lille Vega; 21:00; 130kr A nocturnal creature by nature, Danish pianist, Anna Broensted’s distinctive brand of orchestral-tinged melancholic winter-rock suits the aesthetic of a dormant, dark and wintry Copenhagen perfectly. Snail’space melodies, soundscapes as suggestive as Sigur Rós’s, and depressing lyrics are the defining features of her latest record, Golden Sea (2010). Thankfully this concert isn’t on a Friday because it’s no way to begin a weekend, at least if you’re not heading down the hyggelig route. (English) DvdN

Foster and company kept Vega in a frenzy with their electrified indie pop

band performed a circus-like, keyboard-driven, almost creepy interlude, stirring the crowd into a frenzy just before breaking into the final couple of songs of their set with their ‘90s Britpop-inspired hit ‘Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls)’, featuring Foster on the electric guitar. Despite Foster’s awkward conversations with the confused crowd, the band’s entire stage presence was decidedly entertaining, bursting with vivacious energy and backed by an intermittent light show. The highlight of

the night, however, didn’t come until the encore, during which the group transformed their most popular song, ‘Pumped Up Kicks’, into an electrified dance party that had the audience going simply insane. The short but sweet set ended with Foster’s face lighting up like a little kid at Christmas as he realised everyone was singing along. He directed the microphone towards the crowd and let them take over for the final chorus. Jessica slicer

Shamefully underrated, the quartet remain widely anonymous despite being on the receiving end of favourable reviews from industry giants. thought that I can’t be a Danish minister anymore, but somehow I found my way to the VICE Picks party: simply picture the worst bodega you can ever think of, choke-full of hipsters. A man called Rémi slipped a VIP bracelet around my wrist and immediately ordered another round of what can only be described as a massive ice cube containing cornea-burning amounts of alcohol. The severely damaged locals were transformed into icons of Copenhagen kool to their greatest surprise, as we casually played the worst game of darts this planet has ever seen. BITCHSLAP

Waking up in the wrong country TYPICAL ... I wake up in Sweden at 6am. I’m shivering at this very unfamiliar station (Lund, very pretty, according to the tourist guide), lighting up my very last cigarette, as flashbacks pummel away at my half-frozen brain with the regularity of the punches of a DSB ticket conductor. Apparently, in the middle of the night, I had a 15-minute window in which to show my valid ticket, but guess what: I was asleep! So, as I wake up with the Swedish inquisition on my case, I do something I’ve never done before in my whole life: I ask for the police … to no avail. It ends violently. I believe that the guy has been sacked since then, and resettled in Afghanistan. As I slowly turn into the legendary ice cube upon which the very last polar bear drifts away, my memory is finally coming back. Hazy images of the previous night’s debauchery are flashing before my eyes: a Hell´s Angels castle and its bat-winged skulls coming out of the plasterwork, the giant axe in the middle of the dancefloor, and some seriously under-age girls, very busily pole-dancing. For some strange reason, the big boss took a liking to me and gave me a grand tour of the premises. “Hey, take this porn calendar, hot from the press - it will bring you good luck,” he said before dragging me to the garage where the piece de resistance was silently humming: 20 Harleys, lined up. “Would you like to ride one of them, sonny?” I was asked as I teased the second gear of the biggest chopper. I have not even had a driving lesson before, not to mention a licence – maybe it was the

Toronto-based reviewer Sam Mooney describes L’Orchestre d’HommesOrhestres’ performances as controlled mayhem that threatens with each moment to slip over the edge into sheer pandemonium. This is all done as the orchestra maintains straight faces befitting the moody subject matter of the music. Come and see for yourself. Comedy will be fused with sterling reinterpretations of a legend’s music. It might be sold out, but this is an event worth trawling the online forums for tickets. L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orhestres - Bruno Bouchard, Simon Drouin, Simon Elmaleh, Jasmin Cloutier and Les New Cackle Sisters (Gabrielle Bouthiller and Danya Ortmann) - all hail from Quebec City, Canada. The group began in 2002 with the intention of creating a new style of theatrical, musical performance. These ambitions saw them form an interdisciplinary experimental musical workshop that took stages across Quebec and eventually the world by storm. Their live shows are reviewed and described as the stuff of surrealistic legend. A turkey baster, a saw, teacups, dominoes, frying pans, a step-ladder, a banjo and spaghetti to make a snare drum, bottles as wind instruments, a suitcase as percussion, balloons, kazoos, a golf club … all of these and more are used to create the melodies of Waites.

Snedronning (Snow Queen)

Jewellery Market Jane Kunnik shop and backyard, Gothersgade 54, Cph K, Sat 11:00-17:00 Nothing says love more than a beautiful piece of jewellery. In the backyard of Jane’s shop you’ll find a cosy workshop house where some great designers will show you their latest and greatest creations. As you wander around with your obligatory gløgg, Rasmus Anderson will tempt you with his ‘fantasy’ metal designs, while silversmith ‘Claus’ will make you feel like you’ve wandered back in time with his lovingly made pieces. A very social and interactive vibe is encouraged here, so don’t be shy to chat with the designers or discuss that certain piece you’d like them to make for you.

Textile artists market Design 19E, 2nd floor, Ryesgade 19, Cph K; Fri 2 Dec, 16:00–20:00, Sat 3 Dec, 11:00–17:00 To avoid that argument with your little sister about how little effort you put into her gift, make a visit to Design 19E where textile artists will be flaunting their creations. Permanent workshop members will exhibit alongside guest designers - this year features Anne Black, Superlove and TriCot Tage. This is your one-stop shop for jewellery, linens, clothing, pillows, ceramics and a whole lot more. I think Father Christmas even gets inspiration here.

Art bazaar at School of Visual Art Charlottenborg basement cafeteria, Kongens Nytorv 1, Cph K; Sat 3 Dec, 10:00–17:00 The talented students here have done away with impressing their teachers and are looking to impress you with their wide variety of creations. Everything from big to small works of art, ceramics, sculptures, graphics, paintings and drawings will be on sale. This school has produced some big names over the years such as Olafur Eliasson and Jeppe Hein. So this is the place to make that first step into art collecting at a reasonable price!

Fine arts and architecture market The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School, Philip de Langes Alle 10, Cph K; Sat 11:00-17:00, Sun 11:00-15:00 For that hard-to-buy-for male, look no further. For the first time ever, talented design and architecture students will display their wares together. In a country renowned for its talented design students, expect to find some stunning pieces for only a quarter of the retail price. And to ensure just the right Christmas mood, warm gløgg and aebleskiver will keep the chilly weather at bay.

Bargains galore at the fancy markets

ICONIC AMERICAN singer Tom Waites has been re-envisioned by a troop of artistically daring French Canadians. Whether you’re a Waites fan, or just a fan of art running rampant, this could be the event for you. L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orhestres will recreate Waites’s music using all varieties of instruments, real and invented. For every guitar there will be a picture frame used, every cello will be matched with the sweet sounds of a saw. Does it sound absurd? ... well that is the desired effect. Many of Waites’s greatest hits were covered by other great performers - think ‘Jersey Girl’ by Bruce Springsteen and ‘Downtown Train’ by Rod Stewart – but being covered using household utensils as instruments … this is a first! Beyond the theatrical and musical absurdity, the foundation of this performance are the songs themselves. A legend in his own right, he has garnered worldwide acclaim with his songs depicting those down and out on their luck. Waits’s distinctive voice has been described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding “like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car”. Now L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orhestres will take that storied voice and mishmash of theme and reinvent his music with a wild array of ‘instruments’ - some traditional and others that simply are a flight of fantasy.

Arty Christmas Markets CHRISTMAS comes early in Denmark and so do these quirky markets. If you’re stuck in a rut again about what to get cousin Ida or how to impress your new high society Hellerup chums, why not try these arty farty markets. Nab yourself a steal or even a one-off piece by a talented student. You may end up walking away with a watercolour by the next Monet or an exquisite jewellery box from an upcoming Fabergé.

InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG

BY SIMON COOPER

LIKE SPOKEN dialects are to language, regional dishes represent the true soul of any country’s cuisine. The other weekend, a first foray to the famous west coast of Denmark provided just such a culinary eye-opener. I’d been very familiar with gammon (it was a Cooper household regular; served in steak form with a ring or two of tinned pineapple) and it’s suitability for the sweet. Boiled in Coca-Cola, or braised in cider, a tender joint of ham accompanies most things sweet - and sour. Which is why it worked so well with a sugar mustard crust. The dish is laughably simple, the only real issue is to ensure the crust is compressed into the

meat enough so it doesn’t disintegrated when in the oven. There’s also deciding what to eat with it: whilst root vegetables go perfectly, something green like kale or chard brightens it up a bit on the plate. Beetroot in some form is a must (a grated beetroot and carrot salad, for example). Finally, sweetness is down to personal taste. Whilst you’ll get the sticky sweet sharpness of the crust on the meat, you may wish to boil it in something more sugary than water. If you choose cider, it’s well worth splashing out on a good quality one. So here it is: gammon joint with sugary mustard crust. Make sure you cook a decent portion; too much even, because the leftover cold cuts are great in sandwiches.

Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th. dk; 1,250kr per person 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. Gammon joint with sugary mustard crust 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp dark brown sugar (muscovado works best, but demerara will also do) Vegetables - anything that’s good and rooty at this time of year: celeriac, beetroot and potato work best. Just roughly chop them and slow roast on a baking tray) Place the gammon joint in a large pan and cover with cold water. This is when, if you so desire, you can substitute the water for Coca-Cola or cider (though be warned: you’ll need to use quality cider and not Sommersby!). Bring it to the boil, turn down the heat and let it simmer for around an hour. Remove the joint carefully from the liquid on the stove, be sure to remove the outer rind.

Meanwhile, preheat an oven to 200°C. Mix the mustard, sugar and a touch of salt and pepper in a bowl and apply to the top surface of the meat joint, pressing it firmly into the flesh with the back of a wooden spoon or your hand. Be sure to coat the entire top section. Put on a baking tray and into the oven for 15-20 minutes, until the topping is firmly crusted on. You may wish to flick on the grill at the end to caramalise the topping. One of the great things about this recipe is the margin for error. Boil the ham for just 40 minutes or for well over an hour, and you’ll still going to end up with something a hundred times better for the sliced stuff you buy in the supermarket. Some people initially bake it in tinfoil at a lower temp before turning the heat up. Anybody can cook ham - and the results are always worth it.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. We acknowledged that red wine wouldn’t normally go with fish, but I had willingly agreed to the mismatch and was not disappointed. Throughout the meal Sophie was friendly and attentive, yet unobtrusive, and her attitude personifies the Cap Horn experience. Sophie has only been working

SUNDAY BRUNCH

It probably hasn’t escaped your notice that it’s November in Copenhagen, and the long dark nights of winter have officially arrived. However, the pre-Christmas season is especially suited to enjoying the finer things in life, such as food, drink and cosy company. If you’re in the mood to indulge in some warming fare and togetherness, a visit to Cap Horn should be high on your seasonal ‘to-do’ list. located at Nyhavn 21 in the middle of Copenhagen’s landmark harbour area, Cap Horn is ideally placed as a stop before, during or after a bout of nearby shopping. Stepping in out of the cold, the restaurant immediately welcomes you with its relaxed atmosphere, warm colours, and the smell of fresh wood on the open fireplace. arriving on a recent chilly night, my friend and I were greeted by the lovely ‘prinsesse’ Sofia, who settled us at our table with champagne and an enticing overview of the day’s special dishes. (as it turns out, prinsesse Sofia is not actually a Scandinavian princess, but instead, all the waiting staff at Cap Horn are given the honorary title.) When the time came to decide, my companion immediately laid claim to the pumpkin soup (99kr), while I, secretly annoyed at being beaten to my favourite dish, opted for the duck leg confit (99kr). In the short time before our starters arrived, we’d been suitably warmed by the fireplace and noticed the homely touches around the restaurant, from the Christmas wreaths in the windows, to the mixed tableware collected by the restaurant’s staff at various flea markets. a basket of fresh, organic brown bread soon appeared, followed by our starters. The pumpkin soup was essentially perfect: creamy, rich and buttery, and crowned with a topping of fresh watercress. The duck leg confit with sweet onion puree was delicious. I silently scolded myself for never actually trying duck leg before; the meat was tender, and the flavour balanced by the sweetness of the puree and apple cider syrup. The main courses soon followed: rib eye steak with carrot puree and sautéed parsnips and parsley (189kr), and the dish of the day, climate-friendly cod baked with chanterelle butter, and served with leek, carrot and potatoes (189kr). My cohort’s rib eye steak was medium rare and tender, covered with a generous splash of savoury veal sauce - he was delighted that Sophie ensured we had enough bread so he could sponge up every last bit. My cod dish was a lovely mix of simple and fresh

at the restaurant for a few months and said she enjoys the cosy atmosphere and pleasant people, both colleagues and clientele. No doubt Sophie and her colleagues will be kept busy with the upcoming julefrokost season; Cap Horn’s Christmas menu is now available, and the restaurant welcomes party bookings of all sizes. to finish the meal we requested the chocolate cake with Danish strawberries and organic ice cream (75kr), and crème brûlée with cherry sorbet (69kr). My friend enjoyed his cake and had no trouble finishing, but found it a bit short of

exceptional. My crème brûlée was beautifully served, the colours of the burned cane sugar topping and bright pink sorbet contrasting with the large white bowl. The texture of the burnt sugar and creamy pudding beneath contrasted equally well, and I made my best effort to finish everything. Stepping back out into the cold evening air, full and content, we agreed that many a happy winter’s night could be spent in good company at Cap Horn.

ANCER. The word itself brings forth certain images and feelings of misery and death. But even more than that, it brings forth a battery of questions: ‘When?’, ‘How?’, ‘What kind?’ and finally ‘What are the chances of survival?’ It’s the unknown that really throws us for a loop (and it is through personal experience that I can attest to this, as my mother was very recently diagnosed) as we struggle to comprehend it all. With this in mind, consider Will Reiser, who is not only a first-time screenwriter but also submits a comedic script about a guy battling cancer. I can only imagine the studio’s initial reaction over this type of story proposal. If this type of story was to work at all, you would have to assume that it must be very personal. That the story is comedic and funny in nature - but still moving, relevant and respectful to its subject - is a testament to both its writer and its director Jonathan Levine. 50/50 is the story of Adam (Gordon-Levitt) a 27-year-old recycler who is diagnosed with a rare form of spinal cancer with a survival rate of 50 percent. Hence the movie’s title but as Rogen’s Kyle encourages: “If he were a casino game he would have the best odds.” The movie then follows Adam as he copes not only with

Cancer might seem an unlikely theme, but with TV shows like The Big C leading the way, Hollywood has woken up to its suitability for the big screen his disease, treatment and his feelings about both, but with the varied reactions of his best friend Kyle (Rogen), his ill-prepared girlfriend (Howard), his smothering mother (Huston), and his assigned shrinkin-training (Kendrick). Gordon-Levitt, continues to distance himself from that dorky looking sitcom kid from so long ago ago. After excellent turns in (500) Days of Summer and Inception, he gives a masterfully subtle performance here. His struggle is palpable and believable. Rogen, who is also a producer,

plays the oafish best friend (the Seth Rogen role) that we are so used to him playing. Thankfully he is reined in just enough by director Levine to not pull the film out of balance. But he still delivers some great comedic moments. There are others in the cast also deserving of praise. Huston is terrifically subdued as Adam’s worried mother. As Katherine tells Adam, she is in a tough spot as she “has a husband she can’t talk to [he has Alzheimer’s] and a son who won’t talk to her”. She displaces the an-

guish of a mother unable to do anything for her son – or her husband for that matter. While in smaller roles as fellow chemo patients, Philip Baker Hall and Matt Frewer help emphasise the true nature of the disease while bringing added depth to the film. It is a great script by Reiser (a guy with mostly TV comedy special producer credits), and well directed by Levine (The Wackness). The movie’s ability to go from serious life and death type talk to a comedic moment is brilliant. And as some-

one dealing with the situation personally, 50/50 resonated long after I had left the theatre. Above all else, 50/50 brings believability to the big screen for a situation all too common place in our world today. The ability to get laughs out of an illness so devastating must be difficult, and getting them without being cheesy or forced is a true work of genius. Thanks to its strong cast, quality direction and down-to-earth believable script, 50/50 has a surprisingly good vibe and makes for an excellent night out at the movies.

S USUAL, Cinemateket is coming up trumps in December, showing a diverse mix of films that gives you a great alternative to the Hollywood run-of-the-mill dross on offer at the bigger movie theatres.

One of the themes this coming month is the US actor and director Elia Kazan. Kazan died in 2003, and is described by the New York Times as “one of the most honoured and influential directors in Broadway and Hollywood history”. He was born in Istanbul to Greek parents, but grew up in the States. He studied acting at Yale University and favourerd the use of ‘method acting’ on the stage and screen. He acted in a few films, but quickly showed a unique talent for directing film. He had an amazing ability to draw out fantastic dramatic performances from the actors he worked with, with his films producing no less than 21 acting Oscar nominations and nine wins. He himself also won

two Oscars for best director. Kazan was inclined to cast new actors in his films and was responsible for introducing actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean to the movie scene. In December, you will be able to see such treats, including Dean’s first two films A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and East of Eden (1955). Many of Kazan’s films were concerned with social issues. Gentleman’s Agreement (1947) tackled discreet antiSemitism and On the Waterfront confronted the issue of union corruption in New York. Many regard the latter film as amongst the greatest in the history of international cinema. In the run up to Christmas, the cinema will also be running a

tribute to the Disney classics. Of course, your children may well have seen what amazing things can be done in animation with the computer technology used today, such as in Tangled and Cars, but why not show them some of the fantastic films they made years ago without those modern tools, such as Fantasia, Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty? And for those of you who can understand Danish, there will also be a series of films by the Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer, whose French film The Passion of Joan of Arc was named by the curators of the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival as the most influential film of all time! New this Week New Asian Underground Cinema

Husets Biograf, Magstræde 14, Cph k; New Asian Underground 21:00 (Thu, Sat), 19:00 (Fri, Mon), 17:00 (Sun), Barbarella 19:00 (Sun); www. husetsmagstraede.dk Disorder by Shozin Fukui is a raw hand-held testimony to the chaos of the Chinese urban condition and is a milestone in underground documentary film making. The film will be screening every evening for five days, starting Thursday. Also look out for the first installment of Cinémathèque avec Emma Leth, which kicks off on Sunday with a screening of the 60s classic Barbarella, where Jane Fonda is looking sexy in lycra, long before her exercise videos saw the light of day! EM

Book Your Tickets The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis From the opening credits to the very end, this film is a playful contradiction of old and new. Whilst the film very much stays true to the mythical and timeless world that Tintin author Hergé so masterfully created, the introduction of slick film techniques and 3D wizardry makes it a modern story for a modern audience. The tale begins with fearless young reporter Tintin and

his ever loyal companion Snowy discovering an explosive and deadly secret, concealed within a centuries-old model ship. As the story progresses the loveable two are drawn into an old mystery whilst battling with a scrupulous gangster. Directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg and produced by the super clever Sir Peter Jackson the film is actionpacked, visually dazzling, and fantastically fun. JS

Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Make sure you’re in your seats early for this one or else you’ll miss one of the most brilliant opening scenes in a movie ... ever. Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE

One Day (7) Dir: Lone Scherfig; UK/US drama, 2011,107 min; Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson Everyone could probably point to a past event of which the consequences have literally dictated who and where they are today. ‘One Day’ is a meditation on this theme with a bit more in the mix. The nicely interwoven themes, and the generally believable acting have the film living up to its own ambitious intentions, delivering an emotional punch in the gut. KRG

Avoid like the Plague Abduction (11) Dir: John Singleton; US action, 2011, 106 mins; Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Michael Nyquist, Abduction is a fast and furious ride in which violent things will happen whether the plot has prepared for them or not. Realism and filmic integrity are sacrificed for the obligatory and predictable Hollywood-isms. Abduction is frenzied, flashy and, not surprisingly, pretty shallow. KRG

What’s your number? Dir: Mark Mylod; US Comedy, 2011, 106 mins; Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Ari Graynor What’s Your Number feels more like an underdeveloped sitcom pilot than a hit romcom. The film takes forever to get underway and when it finally does, you find yourself looking for something to distract you while waiting for the inevitable conclusion. EM

Paranormal Activity 3 Dir: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman; US horror, 2011, 84 mins, Katie Featherston Just like with Paranormal Activity 2, the film has skipped the press screenings and saved the premiere for the people who count – the airheads who’ll watch any sequel because it’s a safe bet.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I Dir: Bill Condon; USA drama, 2011, 117 mins; Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner My wisdom teeth operation consisted of long-winded pain and boredom. A very similar experience to watching the latest Twilight installment. Pattinson gives his usual sultry, overly dramatic performance, except now he’s perfected the art of the sulking pout. Stewart, still just as annoying as the shy, awkward teenager might be carrying a half vampire baby, but all we get is one-dimensional Bella, just with a bigger belly. EM

Also Playing Contagion Dir: Stephen Soderbergh; US thriller/drama 2011, 118mins; Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Jude Law Beth (Paltrow) is the promiscuous wife of Mitch (Damon) who, on returning home from a business trip in Hong Kong, unwittingly carries a fast mutating flu virus into her home. Contagion is rather like the mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand - in that there’s a long list of well known faces; the end is nigh; and some sort of uber-flu is to blame. The film also functions more like a bird’s eye view - rather than an intimate human account - leaving the audience uninvolved and distinctly uninfected. MW

The Help

Friends with Benefits (3)

Dir: Tate Taylor; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard The Help follows aspiring author Skeeter (Stone) who is offered her first job writing a cleaning advice column for the local newspaper. Due to her lack of knowledge on the topic she develops an unusual friendship with her friend’s black maid – eventually leading her to write a book. The film’s focus seems to be too much on a white heroine who helps the black maids out… implying the black women can’t help themselves. Despite pulling on the heartstrings, The Help is entertaining and enjoyable. The trailer promised more comedy than was delivered though and in this sense is not a true reflection of the novel. ED

Dir: Will Gluck; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins The film is fast and funny, but ultimately predictable. Your enjoyment of it may well come down to how much you love or hate Justin Timberlake! VS

Jane Eyre Dir: Cary Joji Fukunaga; UK/US romance, 120 mins; Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench If you’re familiar with the story of the book, the film is disappointing. It seems like the skeleton of the story without some of the harsher details. The social criticism on the hypocrisy of Victorianism is removed from the film creating a less harsh environment. Because of this lack of important detail, the film not only lacks meaning, but also really drags. Sadly, this film is just another beautiful bore. ED

Tower Heist Dir: Brett Ratner; US comedy, 2011, 99 mins; Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Eddie Murphy, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena, Alan Alda, Gabourey Sidibe After seeing Tower Heist, you can once again safely say that Eddie Murphy is one funny son-of-apunk-ass-bitch. Unfortunately, the script and the actual heist cannot keep up with the excellent groundwork laid by the actors and their characters. Yes, Tower Heist is classic Hollywood shtick, but the thing is still pretty damn funny, even if it does start a little slow. KE

Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France com, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation that this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

spor t THE W OF EEK

TV3, Wed 21:00

ONE OF THE HIGHEST profile casualties of the last recession was Pam Am, which went bankrupt in 1991 - the Lockerbie air disaster of 1988 probably didn’t help. But while it ended badly, its legacy lives on, firstly in the form of Irish coffee - which was apparently first served to passengers disembarking from a Pan Am flying boat at Shannon Airport by a chef who wanted to warm them up (“Gee, is this Brazilian?” “No, it’s Irish.”) - and secondly in the new US series of the same name, making its debut this week. Pam Am follows the foibles and frivolities of a cabin crew back in the days when girls were unashamedly stewardesses and flight attendants a mere twinkle in the eye of women’s lib. It’s not brilliant and to a degree it rips off Mad Men, but it’s fun,

escapist and has an extremely attractive cast led by Christina Ricci. “This is a series where surface is substance, and surfaces don’t come much dreamier than in this beautifully realised flight fantasy,” praised USA Today. However, the Washington Post decried it “a handsome study in perfect mediocrity”, while the Hollywood Reporter found it “revisionist feminism of the strangest sort … that takes sexism and somehow makes it aspirational”. Staying in the air, the highlyrated Flying the Secret Sky (DR2, Fri 18:10) tells the story of the North American heroes who flew planes across the Atlantic to bolster Britain’s supply in the early days of the Second World War.
