BEN HAMILTON

I’M PRETTY SURE my mother was the inspiration for Cruella De Ville, who in turn was the inspiration for our Select Shopping column on fur (see G9 for details). She would have been 20 when the book was written and, as far as I know, didn’t have any Dalmations, let alone 101 of them. But still, the similarities are uncanny. Then again, it’s not like I’ve ever watched the film – I mean, come on, 101 dogs, it’s preposterous. Besides, I was raised in pre-video Britain where the only Disney we watched were the same clips, shown again and again, every Bank Holiday Monday. So maybe De Ville had a sensitive side. If that’s the case, I take it back about my mother. Fur, it’s a contentious issue, isn’t it? I don’t wear it or get particularly heated about those who wouldn’t be seen dead/would be dead without it. Which is maybe why a few years ago, I found myself being interviewed to become the editor of a magazine called ‘It’s Fur Darling’.

It was clear from the moment that I met the suave and well-groomed interviewers that they were born to work in the fur industry. As the interview progressed – and it went really well, by my standards – a vision started to form in my head of me being interviewed on television, with the caption ‘Ben Hamilton, editor of It’s Fur Darling’ superimposed on my scruffy, coarse exterior. It wasn’t really working for me, or them as it happens, because they didn’t end up hiring any their candidates, although they did have the nerve to tell me it was because I hadn’t worked in journalism since 2004. Elsewhere this week, we’ve got the leather-friendly Copenhagen Custom Show (G9) and the ‘fur’ious Feminists in Space festival (see G3) – let’s just say that they’re not exactly two peas in a pod. I’m not sure cars look better with extra bodies on the bodywork, or that beards are a becoming look for ladies – check them out and decide for yourself. The jury’s out on which one De Ville would favour. While she did have a pretty cool car, I’m not sure a beard would have made her any more terrifying. Likewise my mother. Although if I had to choose, sending her into space does sound like the most sensible option.

If music be the food of love, you’re in the right place - fallen from heaven just for you

Fallen from Heaven

Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 14-24, 1799 Cph V; starts Wed, ends 20 Nov, performances at 20:00 on Wed-Fri, 17:00 and 20:00 on Sat, 15:00 on Sun; tickets 175kr, 105kr for under-25s; www.dansehallerne.dk THE STAGE is full of sleepwalkers. Amongst them, individual dancers break the mellow atmosphere with sharply timed soli. This dreamy scene is one of several that contrast the dynamic of a group with that of an individual dancer. Forceful, animalistic and space-consuming movements alternate with intricate steps that are precisely performed in light qualities and reflect John Tavener’s music. To get both the group choreography and the soli and duets within it right, the dancers work with utmost concentration. Portuguese choreographer André Mesquita is rehearsing his new creation, •(dot), with the dancers of Dansk Danseteater (Danish Dance Theatre). The artistic director of Denmark’s biggest modern dance company, Tim Rushton, has invited Mesquita as a guest choreographer to create a piece for the triple bill Fallen from Heaven. His largely abstract choreography derives from two ideas, says Mesquita after the rehearsal. One, the lapidation of gemstones, came to him when he worked in Antwerp

Store Scene, Operaen, Ekvipagemestervej 10, 1438 Cph K; performances 20:00 on Fri, Mon; tickets 95-1,045kr; 160 mins incl break; www. kglteater.dk Sex, death, and jealousy permeate this stripped-down, but highly moving presentation of Puccini’s classic opera. The set design by Karin Betz and lighting design by Jesper Kongshaug capture the dark atmosphere of Tosca. Each of the three acts features colour-co-ordinated lighting, with deep reds or dark blues bathing the stage to match the emotional musical cues of the orchestra and opera singers. BF

surrounded by the diamond trade. In a ‘dancer-as-gemstone’ association, he plans to cover the dancers in black plaster that gradually loosens and comes off as they dance. Mesquita’s other idea for •(dot) revolves around multiculturalism. Its point of departure was Mesquita’s reading of Jacques Derrida’s text Monolingualism of the Other; or, The Prosthesis of Origin. Working with dance companies where internationalism is the order of the day, the choreographer has ample experience with the co-operation of people who all learned different languages - both in terms of expressing themselves verbally, and physically as dancers. Rushton is particularly fascinated with the musicality in Mesquita’s choreographies. While he describes his own work as creating dance to or with the music, Mesquita uses his musicality to structure the dance with rhythmical punctuations. Also in other respects, it seems to be the differences from his own approach that attracted Rushton to Mesquita’s way of choreographing and led to the commission for Dansk Danseteater. “When I make a dance,” declares Rushton. “I am not interested in abstraction. Women are women in my pieces, men are men etc.” A revisited version of Rushton’s Love Songs will be performed as another part of Fallen from Heaven. The piece was premiered to great acclaim at the Royal Danish Opera

in May this year. But while Rushton aimed to contrast the Royal Old Stage’s traditional red plush with a rough, plane scenography, he will glitz his piece up a little for the evening at Dansehallerne where the stage is already bare. Another difference will be that the jazz singer Caroline Henderson, who was on stage for the premiere of Love Songs, has now made a recording for the version at Dansehallerne. Rushton describes Love Songs as a bit of a “tongue-in-cheek jazz ballet”. He says he never intended to make a piece like that, but the mere presence of jazz singer Henderson in the studio during rehearsals changed the atmosphere radically and led to a creation that looks quite different from his other dances. The piece is undoubtedly a departure for Rushton. After years of being thrilled by politically engaged pieces and nakedness on stage, Rushton explains that he’s approaching the subject of love because it’s simply different things that interest him today. “I wanted to make something that feels good,” he explains unapologetically. Now a happily married man in his late 40s, love seemed an obvious area of interest. And what do you reply to that? Sandwiched between the choreographies by Mesquita and Rushton, a new dance film will make up the third part of the triple bill. FRANZISKA BORK PETERSEN NEW

Warehouse 9, Onkel Dannys Plads 1, Cph V; performances Thu (tonight) & Fri 20:00; tickets 50kr; www.warehouse9.dk This Swiss-Danish duo’s dance performance poses questions about how we view royalty today. The performance seeks to ask whether the way contemporary pop stars are presented and perceived is in any way different to the way monarchs were regarded in the past. And, how can we comprehend the sovereign body double, which is both a ‘natural’ private body with a representative political body? The performers will be dressed as a two-bodied royal figure called Chuck Morris. This helps to create a juxtaposition to show the two sides to the contentious questions they seek to answer. EM

With their latest production, The Zoo Story by Edward Albee, THAT Theatre Company aims to provoke and stimulate discussion around these questions and ideas. Starring Ian Burns and Borgen’s Adam Brix, the play is a dark comedy and is furiously paced in the lead-up to its epic conclusion. KP

4 - 10 November Girl power goes galatic

WOMEN WITH beards, women making pornography, women punk rockers, and women in space are just some of the curious subject matters waiting for you at the upcoming Feminists in Space Performance Festival at Warehouse 9. Curators Kajsa Dahlberg, Molly Haslund and Gritt Uldall-Jessen have organised a five-day extravaganza of contemporary performance art exploring various styles of performance from theatre to political action over the course of the weekend. Besides performance, the festival includes music, film screenings, political actions, and readings. Artists from Denmark, Sweden, France, and Germany will be on hand to get you hot and bothered. The curators consider this international festival to be entertainment, a place for experimentation, and a political demonstration - all in one. Their stated goal for the festival is to display “the diversity and com-

plexity of performance art, while having a specific focus on artistic practices navigating the field between art and politics”. With backgrounds in theatre, queer and feminist theory, political action and performance art, they apply these sensibilities to their choice of artists included in the festival’s diverse programme. For example one of the scheduled groups, France-based La Barbe, or The Beard, have generated a following with their tongue-in-cheek political actions around gender inequality. The large group is known for wearing false beards during the over 80 different public actions they have organised “wherever women are discriminated against”. La Barbe will be leading a workshop, giving a performance, and taking to the streets of Copenhagen, in beards of course. Marit Östberg, the queer feminist film director, screens her new film, Sisterhood. The film presents interviews with both actors and those that work behind the camera about their experiences working in queer feminist pornography. In addition to Sisterhood, Östberg will screen her pornographic short, Share. Feminist pornography proposes a different take on the typical world of sex films by suggesting the possibility of empowerment through erotica. On Saturday night, the

The rural Appalachian boys who are really from the city Fleet Foxes

Falconer Salen Thursday, 20:00; 290 kr www.billetlugen.dk www. fleetfoxes.com

T

he astrology of Fleet Foxes’ musical universe is as vast as the constellations themselves. The band manages to drift seamlessly between the haunting echoes of a small town congregation and searing harmonies of a modern folk outfit. The diverse range of influences evident in their music is what makes them almost impossible to define. To call them an indie-folk band could be a start. Yet reducing them to such a preconceived image would be

like calling Bob Dylan a songwriter, instead of a poet. Despite emerging from Seattle’s alternative music scene – the birthplace of Nirvana and Pearl Jam – there is something distinctly rural about the band. Their music is sepia-toned, tinged with an Appalachian folk charm that calls forth a bygone era. Yet just as you think you’ve pigeonholed them, their songs will take another direction. Sundrenched and dreamy SoCal pop might wander in momentarily, only to meet the sombre tones of a baroque organ. It’s a meditative balance of light and shade. The band released their first selfdistributed EP in 2006 and soon began generating attention online. Fleet Foxes attracted the international press in 2008 with the release of a second

EP, Sun Giant. Their self-titled debut album soon followed to rave reviews. According to many, the saviours of American music had arrived. The editor of music magazine Uncut summed up their feelings when he declared that the album “showed impeccable musicianship, and although you could trace its antecedents, it sounded totally unique”. This is a common reaction to the band on first listen. It sounds vaguely like many things that you might have heard before. Yet familiar sounds are rearranged in a totally new way. Traces of late ‘60s pop psychedelia are there, as are echoes of Simon +Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills + Nash. Still, the music isn’t a complete throwback to decades past, and the experimental soundscapes also recall more

contemporary acts such as Animal Collective. Don’t be fooled by the range of influences though; this is music that stands firmly on its own two feet. Their latest album, Helplessness Blues, was released in May this year. To say that the record lived up to its predecessor would be an understatement. It took the inviting and soothing melodies of Fleet Foxes and blended it with a healthy dose of ennui, darker poeticism and a musical style where Pecknold takes a more central vocal role. “So now I am older/than my mother and father/when they had their daughter/now what does that say about me,” he asks on ‘Montezuma’. This is an album full of self-questioning that searches for answers through its pensive lyrics and its ultimately redemp-

tive musicality. “And now after some thinking/I’d say rather be/a functioning cog in some great machinery/certain something beyond me,” Pecknold concludes on the title track and standout of the album, Helplessness Blues. In a world of easily digestible and overproduced pop tunes, Fleet Foxes provide a joyful but complex alternative. Many have used the term ‘chamber pop’ to describe their distinct sound - an attempt to define them that might hit closest to the mark. Though, perhaps we should just abandon the search for a fixed meaning and definitive position of this band. We would be better off just sitting back and getting lost in the music. Kevin ponniah

KIDS CORNER

Enjoying Danish children’s literature IF YOU HAVE made Denmark your new home for the next few years, whether it is for the shorter or the longer term, chances are you are now to some degree engaged in learning the language and absorbing the new culture. Your children are adapting to their new home, making Danish friends and perhaps even going to Danish school or nursery. Your own integration efforts are not without their challenges, but hopefully also fun. There are many ways to learn about a new culture and, in case you’re missing out on the fun part of it, we suggest one that is liable to not only make it interesting, but could also involve the whole family. That is to explore Danish children’s literature with your kids. To help you get started in your exploration, we decided to put together a little guide to Danish children’s literary classics. For the youngest ones, there is a world of nursery rhymes to explore. These are particularly useful for building up not only your Danish vocabulary, but also your children’s. Halfdan Rasmussen wrote many, among them Halfdans ABC, Den Lille Frække Frederik and Mariehønen Evigglad - the latter being a very popular children’s song. Other authors to look out for in this genre are Jens Sigsgaard who wrote Okker Kokker Gummiklokker and Johan Krohn, the author of Peters Jul. This last one is very relevant for the upcoming Christmas season. Beyond rhymes, there are other classics like the Cirkeline series by Hanne Hastrup, about the adventures of a tiny,

funny looking elf girl who lives on her creator’s desk and sleeps in a match box. Thomas Winding is the ultimate children’s author from the ‘60s until the present day. His stories for children of all ages are widely available in books and CDs - read by the author himself. Another classic is Ole Lund Kierkegaard’s Gummi Tarzan about a little boy who gets bullied at school, his struggles and how he overcomes them. A few other titles and authors to check out are Cykelmyggen Egon by Flemming Quist Møller, Mis med de blå øjne by Egon Mathisen, and Jakob og Joakim by Jørgen Clevin. Newer authors already acquiring classic status with their hilarious stories and rhymes are Jakob Martin Strid (Mustafas Kiosk and Min mormors gebis) and Kim Fupz Aakeson with his Vitello series. Although not Danish, there are also some Nordic books that have very much become a part of Danish Children’s literary culture. They are, among others, Pippi Långstrump (known as Pippi Longstocking in English), Emil fra Lønneberg and Ronja Roverdatter, all by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren; Karius og Baktus by the Norwegian Thornbjørn Egner; and the Mumi Trolls series by the Finnish writer Tove Jansson. Finally, the DR classics Kaj og Andrea and Bamse og Kylling exist also in book and CD form and occupy a great deal of young Danes’ imaginations. If your children have Danish friends, being familiar with those would certainly give them a common ground to share with their little buddies.

This is but an introduction to Danish children’s literature to get you started. There is, of course, lots more to explore and we hope you will. Happy reading! Library You can borrow all of these books at your local library. Go to bibliotek.dk and search for a book, reserve it, pick it up or have it delivered to your local branch. Homework Help If you have older children who are attending Danish school and who need help with their lessons, some libraries offer help with homework, Danish and more. One place is the Lektiecafé at the main library in Frederiksberg every Monday and Wednesday from 16:00 to 18:00 (www.fkb.dk/boern/lektiehjaelp).

IF THE TERMS ‘slant six’ and ‘dodge hemi’ and ‘nitrous’ are missing in your daily life, the Scandinavian Custom Show promises to fill that void with more than 500 custom-built cars and bikes this weekend. Join a tightly-knit community of hot rod enthusiasts who for another year are convening at Bella Center in Copenhagen this weekend, travelling in from Sweden, Norway and Finland to admire tricked-out Honda bikes, chromed choppers and other souped-up treats with unique monikers like the ‘War Camaro’. Classic Americana will be set up with a special hot rod section that includes 1950s Chevy pickups, a drag racing Dodge Dart, and a Harley shovelhead style motor. The champion of tractor pulls in Denmark, Kim Hoffmeyer, will be there with his Massey Ferguson V8 tractor, a classic model from the 1970s ... complete with a 500 horsepower. Lithuanian custom shop Metalhammers is setting up three of their bike creations, including their ‘Ace of Spades’ Chopper. Racing driver Frederik Dannevang will be there with his team and his vehicle, a Peugeot Spider, in addition to a genuine Nascar 2006 Monte Carlo from the US, and several rally teams. A racing simulator will be set up to provide some direct thrills to those who want to feel the drag while changing from 300kph to 120 on a turn. Entertainment alongside the machines involves so much more than just scantily clad females - though there are

Margit Pels Store Kongensgade 118, Cph K; open Mon–Fri 11:00–17:30, Sat 10:00-13:00; standard mink coat: 20,000kr Quaint, charming and authentic, Margit Pels was founded in 1974 and produces the vast majority of their products themselves. Much like a committed marriage, this is the place you go to find that perfect longterm piece. As owner Margit Gjerding says: “Buying a fur coat is often for life, so our aim is to advise the customer on the right fur.” Seal and mink coats are on offer here, but it’s their range of accessories that had me feasting my eyes. Silverfox scarves, lambskin boots, and hats in every colour and size.

Dee’s Diner will be serving American burgers and Budweiser, House of Ink will demonstrate some biker traditions that go a little beyond getting a macho tattoo of some burning skulls, and the SCS Airbrush Awards will be given out on Friday. Stunt shows and power displays will take place in the Streetfire Drifting Arena with shows beginning on the hour all weekend, where the engine volume

Judging in the custom categories takes place on Sunday, before concerts by new Danish pop duo PULS and Vasilije B with his crew. A raft of exhibitors will be showing off custom graphics, streetwear for cars and humans, designer sound systems, parts and racing models, not only for the mechanic, but also for wannabe tinkerers and their families. BY JULIE IRGENS Howtocook.tumblr.com

WHEN MY BABY came out and in the months after, I didn’t think about myself for a while and that was nice. I only thought about him: how much he was eating, what clothes he should wear, how he liked his toys, what his poo was like. Then, when he was five months old something happened. All of a sudden I was thinking about clothes again. For me. I left him outside Agent Provocateur to try on a dress. Someone asked, through the curtains of the fitting room, if it was my baby that was crying. I felt guilty, but couldn’t help it; I was vain again. And this tiny shift in my brain came about at about the time when he was old

enough to eat other things than just milk. Breast milk contains all the nutrients that babies need and even protects them from diseases. And it’s convenient. But when the baby is getting big and eats every hour and the mom’s hair is falling out, it’s a good time to introduce other foods. Babies can eat normal things like broccoli and potatoes and turkey as long as it’s mashed properly. But that doesn’t mean they will like it. Because it’s frustrating to pump out milk, boil vegetables and then mash it all up, only to have to throw it all out, here are a few combinations that might work.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th. dk; 1,250kr per person 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. the food easier to swallow. Dill apparently adds sweetness and some babies prefer that, although it’s good to let your baby get used to all kinds of tastes. (I’d wait with green chillies though.) The apricot contains iron and is good for babies’ tummies, but try all kinds of dried fruits. If you let them soak in water for a while they’ll be easier to mash After a while you can start adding meat. Things you shouldn’t add are honey and salt, and sugar, I guess. If your baby refuses to eat things that aren’t sweet you can use mashed apple or pear instead. That’s the secret behind Ella’s Kitchen’s baby foods. They’re full of apples. But babies love them (at least mine), and they’re also full of other fruit and veg and packaged in a really lovely way. And yes, one more thing, you can freeze baby food in little containers or use an ice cube tray to make baby-sized portions.

The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231 www.dalaman.dk; three-course menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. It’s a haven for meat lovers and is popular among its clientele for the meaty mixed grill. AJ

Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open MonSat 12:00-22:00, pub open Mon-Thu 12:00-24:00, FriSat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; www.brewpub.dk; three-course lunch menu 155kr The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre LB

Alex, the man himself, working on a sushi creation at his Copenhagen branch

The fish is Norwegian and local, as far as possible. With the occasional Australian and Sri Lankan beast thrown in for good measure - when the Nordic seas don’t provide for tuna, for instance. The wine list covers all the rieslings, Mosels and Chablis you could ask for. The restaurant’s interior, like the presentation of the food, is best described as elegantly simple. The staff are accommodating, smiling and cute, as per Danish regulation. The work of head chef Manalo is clean, calm and precise. Cool and un-

SUNDAY BRUNCH

Hurry up, Alex is still here. But not for long, because his eponymous sushi empire is growing fast and soon the praised Tokyo-trained chef from Oslo is off to start another Scandinavian offshoot, in Stockholm. prior to entering, one suspects Copenhagen’s now half-year old Alex Sushi might be a hokey yuppie trap. But being situated right next to the infamous Gordon Gekko-wannabe haunt, Café Victor, doesn’t seem to affect it. The clientele appears to be a nice mixture of families, middle-aged dates and Copenhageners in their mid-20s. At this place, the experts rule. Like in a quality cocktail bar, you’re encouraged to let the pros do the choosing. If you want to be pedantic - or if you’re bringing kids - you can of course order off the list. But the whole thing is geared towards choosing a menu that leaves room for Alex and the Copenhagen branch’s head chef, Ernesto Manalo, to improvise - or better still, giving them completely free rein. They even let you give them a ballpark figure of how much you want to spend, identify a particular favourite fish/style of sushi, and they’ll work out your ideal culinary handling. regardless of what menu or instructions you opt for, you’re in for a treat. Our meal started off with Hamachi (yellowtail) and salmon Sashimi, covered with a finely calibrated lime, coriander and soy sauce marinade. We sat in the bar, which made it easy to lose oneself in complete paralysis, mesmerised by the chefs’ handiwork - work that we’d devour soon enough. For the second round, we were served seven Nigiri sushi: a compilation of salmon, scallop, lobster, halibut etc that resembled the usual takeaway tray, but easily outcompeted it in taste. A last serving of delicious tempura Maki with deep fried scampi and another big plate full of Sashimi concluded our menu, which at Alex Sushi goes under the name ‘red Menu’ and costs 485kr. While this menu tasted wonderful and was plentiful in terms of size, the delicacies prepared before our eyes suggested there were more spectacular options available. From our seat in the bar, we watched Alex and his junior partner prepare an impressive lobster dish, expertly separate the whites of quail eggs from their yolks and drizzle salmon roe on precisely sliced avocados. However stunning the creations looked, nothing seemed decorated in a gimmicky way.

compromisingly graceful under pressure, he operates at the same pace throughout the evening - regardless of how many orders are coming in. Do you have important clients you want to treat or showboat a little in front of? See if you can get access to their private dining room. If that doesn’t secure you the deal you’re after, nothing will. But you’ll still have had a splendid meal and no doubt the sake has at least given you some corporate gossip that you’ll dine out on next weekend. And whatever you do, don’t leave

early. Not only does the place get better as it fills up and the atmosphere intensifies, but boy does Alex know how to make dessert. you probably won’t feel like it – the portions are generous - but still, miss the dark and white chocolate mousse with green tea topping, and you’ll only have yourself to blame. That thing is seriously tasty. Definitely less expensive than oil, this could be the best thing to come out of Norway for a while.

n a vast world with so many people and so many complications there are numerous stories to be told. the majority of us go through our lives wired into our direct circumstance, our own day-to- day reality and concerns, but a brave few look to tell the stories of others. such people are the documentary filmmakers of the world. these people turn their camera to the disenfranchised, deprived and destitute: from those living in poverty in the third World, to animals mistreated on a farm, to homeless people on the streets of major cities - to tell their stories. In most cases, the documentary film has not been a high yield, economic product. so when documentary film is celebrated, it’s a great chance not only to expand ones perspective, but also to see some films that may not have otherwise seen the light of day at the cinema the festival itself is the largest of its type in scandinavia featuring some 200 films. Beginning back in 2003, the first festival initially sifted through 14,000 submissions. this year’s festival attracted more that 45,000 submissions which were then whittled down to the 200 to be shown. Beyond just the films presented, the festival will be looking to show how documentary film can bridge

B

EtH (PaltRoW) Is the promiscuous wife of Mitch (Damon) who, on returning home to Minneapolis from a business trip in Hong Kong, unwittingly carries a fast mutating flu virus into her home. a secret

overnight layover in Chicago ensures the disease has a headstart on those trying to contain it (Winslet, Fishburne) and before long the world is in the grip of panic with the United states descending into a chaotic military containment. the film begins with a pulsing energy and a claustrophobic air. While not wholly derivative, Contagion resembles other apocalyptic works. superficially, it’s rather like the mini-series adaptation of stephen King’s The Stand - in that there’s a long list of well known faces; the end is nigh; and some sort of uber-flu is to blame. thankfully soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s 11) eschews

daft dream sequences, quasi religious rhetoric and Rob lowe. Instead he delivers his film without sentimentality, in cool, desaturated hues. It’s a narrative of two halves: the first follows efforts to contain the outbreak of the disease, while the second traces attempts to prevent media outlets from provoking mass hysteria. this aptly illustrates how en-mass fear of infection poses an equally dangerous threat as infection itself. It also reveals established practices of corporate parties who stand to benefit financially from such an outbreak. Big name actors are staged left, right and centre, admirably without ceremony. this

has the effect of leaving you utterly disorientated, unsure of whom to follow or invest in. although initially exciting, this means the film spends too little time with individual characters and prevents viewers from becoming attached to any of them. Ultimately Contagion functions better as a bird’s eye view - rather than an intimate human account. When it tries to do both, it jars. When we’re asked to care for specific characters, there’s been so little groundwork done, the drama fails to affect, thus leaving us feeling uninvolved and distinctly uninfected. Mark Walker

Book Your Tickets The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis From the opening credits to the very end, this film is a playful contradiction of old and new. Whilst the film very much stays true to the mythical and timeless world that Tintin author Hergé so masterfully created, the introduction of slick film techniques and 3D wizardry make it a modern story for a modern audience. The tale begins with fearless young reporter Tintin and his ever loyal companion Snowy discovering an explosive and deadly secret, concealed within a centuries-old model ship. As the story progresses the loveable two are drawn into an old mystery whilst battling with a scrupulous gangster. Directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg and produced by the super clever Sir Peter Jackson the film is actionpacked, visually dazzling, and fantastically fun. JS

Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Make sure you’re in your seats early for this one or else you’ll miss one of the most brilliant opening scenes in a movie ... ever. Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE

One Day (7) Dir: Lone Scherfig; UK/US drama, 2011,107 min; Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson Everyone could probably point to a past event of which the consequences have literally dictated who and where they are today. ‘One Day’ is a meditation on this theme with a bit more in the mix. The nicely interwoven themes, and the generally believable acting have the film living up to its own ambitious intentions, delivering an emotional punch in the gut. KG

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follows our heroic threesome, and with a litany of impossible foes and an action-packed battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS

Avoid like the Plague Abduction (11) Dir: John Singleton; US action, 2011, 106 mins; Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Michael Nyquist, Abduction is a fast and furious ride in which violent things will happen whether the plot has prepared for them or not. Realism and filmic integrity are sacrificed for the obligatory and predictable Hollywood-isms. The

story runs that one night while working on a school project with a cute girl, Nathan (Lautner) discovers his baby picture on a missing children’s website. One ill-advised phone call later and he finds himself in a sinister web of corruption and hitmen. So who is it for? The formula of having a grim subtext frequently eclipsed by scenes of animal magnetism may be suitable for couples out on a date but we need to call a spade a spade - Abduction is frenzied, flashy and, not surprisingly, pretty shallow. KG

Crazy, Stupid, Love (7) Dir: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa; 2011; 118 mins; Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling Carell re-enacts his 40-Year-Old Virgin character in this fluffy, finely manicured romcom. He and Gosling make an appealing buddy couple, with Gosling alluring as a lithe and ruthless tomcat. Pleasure can be had watching this; however the slapstick finale feels hopelessly banal. AS

I Don’t Know How She Does It (15) Dir: Douglas McGrath; US comedy, 2011, 89 mins; Sarah Jessica Parker, Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, Christina Hendricks Sarah Jessica Parker is a hotshot investment banker/wannabe super mum in this new dramedy that brings nothing new to the genre other than to say that trying to be a man is a waste of a woman. The film follows Kate (Parker), who runs around with more ferver than a tasmanian

devil, as she tries to balance her home life with her architect husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two kids with her work life. Although to be honest, perhaps if they had just sat down and talked about the situation they could have worked it out and saved 30 minutes of film. A mediocre film at best, save yourself a ticket and rent the DVD – but only if you’re really desperate. KE

Johnny English Reborn Dir: Oliver Parker; UK com, 2011, 101 mins; Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Dominic West Not knowing whether to take itself seriously or be goofball Bean funny, Johnny English Reborn hovers in the dreaded middle ground of comic purgatory. Bottom line: It has some LOL moments and fans of Atkinson will still probably love this movie, though there is less Mr Bean and more Blackadder this time around. KE

Footloose (11) Dir: Craig Brewer; US dance, 2011, 100 mins; Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell For many who grew up loving this classic film, this remake will no doubt destroy a story that for so many people was almost flawless. JOS

Paranormal Activity 3 Dir: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman; US horror, 2011, 84 mins, Katie Featherston

Just like with Paranormal Activity 2, the film has skipped the press screenings and saved the premiere for the people who count – the airheads who’ll watch any sequel because it’s a safe bet.

What’s your number? Dir: Mark Mylod; US Comedy, 2011, 106 mins; Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Ari Graynor What’s Your Number feels more like an underdeveloped sitcom pilot than a hit romcom. While Faris delivers good comic timing her character should have been less hysterical and more real. The film takes forever to get underway and when it finally does, you find yourself looking for something to distract you while waiting for the inevitable conclusion. EM

Also Playing Horrible Bosses (11) Dir: Seth Gordon; 2011; 100 mins; Jason Bateman, Charlie Day Ferociously plot-driven with several hilarious scenes, Horrible Bosses unfolds like dominos tumbling faster and louder. KRG

Friends with Benefits (3) Dir: Will Gluck; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins The film is fast and funny, but ultimately predictable. Your enjoyment of it may well come down to how much you love or hate Justin Timberlake! VS

G19

The Three Musketeers 3D (11) Dir: Paul WS Anderson; UK adventure, 2011, 102 mins; Logan Lerman, Matthew MacFadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans When you have the director behind the Resident Evil pictures, with money to burn and a desire to do 3D, attempting to rework a classic piece of literature, what could possibly go wrong? A lot. Lerman, MacFadyen and Stevensen show good chemistry as war buddies but don’t get the screen time to really show it. This incarnation of The Three Musketeers is doomed to the same fate as the 2010 Robin Hood remake – they just don’t offer enough to jump start their ‘hidden’ franchaise hopes. KE

Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France com, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation that this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (11) Dir: Rupert Wyatt; USA Sci-fi 2011, 105 min; James Franco, Andy Serkis A good idea becomes didactic and sometimes illogical, with dumbed-down dialogue and performances that too frequently fail to impress. MW

IF YOU SAW Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People and you’re expecting his new TV series, The Trip, to be set in Manchester to an Acid House soundtrack, you’d be wrong. Because while it’s up north again, this time it’s restaurants not nightclubs, as we follow a couple of actors on a tour reviewing them. Sounds horrendous, but then we learn it’s Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, very arguably Britain’s most talented comedians, who previously worked under Winterbottom on Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, in which they improvised numerous scenes, trading insults and impressions to great comic effect. The word hilarious is over-used when talking about comedy, but if you like intelligent banter and bickering, you’ll love this. The Scotsman

found it “completely brilliant”, The Guardian “one of the funniest things on TV”, while The Independent’s critic confessed that he shed “big fat tears of laughter”. From Coogan’s contemplative musings and Brydon’s ‘small man in a box’ voice to their unforgettable rendition of ABBA’s ‘The Winner Takes It All’, you won’t want to miss this one. Staying with dark humour, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (BBC Ent, Thu 23:15) has divided audiences with his tale about an American manager who relocates to London to become a great source of amusement to his new, rather nasty British colleagues. It’s an interesting premise and is cowritten by a Brit and an American, but overall it underachieves.

Elsewhere, SV2 is showing docs about Arthur Russell (Tue 22:45) and Michelle Obama (Fri 18:00); in Derren Brown: Hero at 30,000 Feet (BBC Ent, Sun 21:00, repeated 23:25) the illusionist convinces a fellow passenger that the pilot’s incapacitated and that he can save the day and fly the plane; Copenhagen should feature in Gauguin: The SV1, Thu 22:45 The Trip Full Story (DR K, Fri 17:10) given that he lived here for a while; Come Dine With Me (BBC Ent, Mon-Fri 17:15) is an often entertaining reality cooking show in which diners take it in turns to host a dinner party; and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a prequel to the just-finished Spartacus: Blood and Sand, commissioned because very sadly the star of the first series died from cancer last month.
