WELCOME to the land of bicycles if you’re an overseas visitor attending the Road World Championships. Watch out for the cycle lanes though – ouch, the bitter irony of coming here to watch the biking and getting run over outside Tivoli by a vivisectionist from Valby. And stop complaining about the traffic inconvenience if you live here permanently! I don’t know if it’s just me, but my non-Danish friends (mostly late 30s, early 40s) seem to be increasingly buying cars – as if living here hasn’t rubbed off on them at all. Lazy gits - although I don’t tell them that when they give me a lift back from football when it’s raining. Having lived here for eight years, it’s surreal to remember that passing your driving test was a rite of passage for every single one of my friends growing up in rural Britain. Public transport was non-existent and it was something that you just had to learn once you turned 17. So, having failed my

test more times than I care to remember by my 19th birthday, I’m kind of chuffed to live in a country where driving is un-necessary, extortionate, and tricky - particularly with all those pesky cyclists you have to look out for. Among the events especially being staged to coincide with the Road World Championship is the Copenhagen Bicycle Festival (see G9 for details), which sounds like it’s going to be a vibrant experience, if a little weird. God knows what Hard Court Bike Polo and The Cycling Mosquito Egon are, but they’re on the schedule. Elsewhere this week, we’ve got the Buster Film Festival for children (see G9), which is attractively cheap at just 15 kroner a ticket; Hunting in Bella 2011 (see G8), an absolute must if you love blood sports; and the Nordic Art Fair (see G3), which once again is running concurrently with the Alternative Art Fair (also G3), giving art-lovers equal amounts of conformity and abnormity (including Space Frame bikes), all in the space of one weekend. So while you might be here for the cycling, there’s nothing stopping you from watching a kid’s film, shooting a stag on a simulator and viewing some art – it should be easy to get around … providing you cycle of course.

Enetime og Sylfiden (La Sylphide & The Lesson)

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, 1055 Cph K; starts Sat, ends Oct 7; performances at 20:00 on Sat, Tue, Thu, Sat 24, Sat 26, Oct 7; tickets 95–595kr; www. kglteater.dk AUGUST BOURNONVILLE was, choreographically speaking, the founding father of the Royal Danish Ballet and La Sylphide is, at least in my humble opinion, the brightest star among the many masterpieces that make up the Royal Danish Ballet’s Bournonville heritage. While often considered the epitome of Danish ballet, La Sylphide was actually created in Paris in 1832 by Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni, starring his beautiful daughter Marie Taglioni as the Sylph. Bournonville saw the ballet at the Paris Opera and was so intrigued by it that he created his own version in Copenhagen with new music by Danish composer Herman Severin Løvenskiold. Therefore, La Sylphide is also the only tragedy in the Bournonville repertoire – good old August liked his happy endings, but since this story was not actually his own, he did not have much of a choice, except to stick with the original plot. And thank the powers that be for that! Because it is the most heartbreakingly beautiful story you will ever see on a stage. It is a tragic tale about the young Scotsman James who is about to marry the sweet, pretty and very plain girl Effy. A wedding that he is looking forward to – until the sylph shows up, confusing him, beckoning him, making him doubt everything he ever believed in. Like I said, this story does not have a happy ending, and despite being almost 200 years old, it is a story that has not lost its grip – it is still as touching, beautiful and, not least, relevant as it was two centuries ago. So be prepared. And by that I mean bring a box of tissues. And just to put the icing on this supernatural cake, the Royal Danish Ballet’s superstar, 22-year-old Alban Lendorf, who was just awarded the prestigious Leonide Massine Award as most outstanding male dancer of the year, will be making his debut as James. This could very well be one of those debuts that will go down in ballet history, and personally I cannot wait to see what Lendorf will bring to this role, which is one of the most coveted in the male repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet. Royal Danish Ballet presents a piece by Flemming Flindt, another choreographer who has played a crucial part in the history of the Royal Danish Ballet. The Lesson, created in 1963, was Flindt’s debut as a choreographer. It is based on Romanian playwright Eugène Ionesco’s La Leçon, a story about an ill-tempered and slightly sadistic professor, who in Flindt’s adaption became a ballet teacher who loses control over himself whenever another young and eager ballerina in spe enters his dingy basement studio. According to Flindt himself, this is one of the very few ballets in this world that actually features a straightforward and understandable storyline. And straightforward it is – as well as fast paced and intense. And just like La Syl-

orgy of lust and crime which is made bearable by the beautiful music”. The dramatic story centres on police chief Scarpia who abuses his power to lure famous opera diva Floria Tosca into bed. While Tosca foils the plan, Scarpia takes revenge on her and her beloved Cavardossi with terrible force. Peter Langdal’s successful show has played to full houses for several seasons now, and you’ll be left with no doubt why once you’ve experienced it. EM

She danced the part on the company’s tour to the United States earlier this year and received some rave reviews, but this will be her Copenhagen debut. These two ballets are among the most important works in the repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet, so if you feel like the backbone of your basic ballet knowledge is a bit wobbly, this is the perfect double bill to fill in those missing parts.

Combining music, acting and dance, the show follows the story of young Afghani student Farhad, who undergoes torture during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. He’s then rescued by a young widow and together they experience a maze of dreams and nightmares. Farhad must then face the harrowing decision- to stay or to flee. Based on a novel by the international exile writer Atiq Rahimi the show features a melting pot of performers from Denmark, Sweden and the Middle East, many of whom are refugees themselves. EM

Factory for Art and Design, Sundholmsvej 46, Cph S; Fri 16:00-22:00, Sat 12:00-20:00, Sun 12:00-20:00; tickets: 50kr; www.altcph.dk ‘ART COPENHAGEN - The Nordic Art Fair’ and ‘alt_cph11: Encounters’, Copenhagen’s Alternative Art Fair, represent two sides of Copenhagen’s art world. The two fairs happen at the same time, but could not be more different. Art Copenhagen takes place at Forum Copenhagen in Frederiksberg, showcasing over 80 galleries and 500 artists. In its 15th year, Art Copenhagen attracts galleries not only from Denmark, but also from Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Faeroe Islands and Iceland. Conversely, alt_cph11, housed at the Factory for Art and Design (Fabrikken for Kunst og Design) in Amager, is “a non-commercial platform for the self-organising art scene”. This year alt_cph11 is bringing in artists and art spaces from Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the USA to network in Copenhagen. An art fair like Art Copenhagen is both an opportunity to buy art and to gauge current trends in the world of contemporary art. A part of the Copenhagen art scene since 1997, the fair ignored the memo about a global economic recession by logging record attendance levels last year, which fair organisers hope to repeat in 2011. Art Copenhagen’s organisers include representatives from Copenhagen’s most well-known commercial galleries, like Galleri

Exhibitions Subtopian & Jesus Christ Get Off My Back

These two concurrent exhibitions reflect this international relationship. In Jesus Christ Get off My Back, Danish artist Thomas Øvilsen leans his paintings against the wall so gallery-goers have to turn them around for viewing. Meanwhile, Subtopian by the US artist Ben Blatt is a little more subdued in what it asks of the audience. Blatt works in watercolour making illustrative paintings of terrariums and abandoned architectural spaces. While Øvilsen works with multiple materials and layers to make sculptural paintings, Blatt works with thin washes of paint creating more delicate imagery. BF

Bo Bjerggaard and V1 Gallery, and local art collectors. People attend art fairs as collectors, gallerists, and as artists to expand their professional network and discover new art to buy and sell. But don’t worry if you are an art fan on a budget - the fair presents a spectacular art viewing experience designed to immerse fair-goers in all things contemporary art. There will be unknown artists from around Scandinavia and Europe, but Art Copenhagen also offers attendees the opportunity to see celebrated artists up close in ways that don’t happen as often at galleries and museums. Work by artists like Joseph Beuys, Olafur Eliasson, Georg Baselitz, and the infamous Shepard Fairy will all be on display in the cavernous Forum Copenhagen halls. Moving south to Amager, art lovers can enter the equally cavernous halls of the Factory for Art and Design to explore the non-commercial world of contemporary art. This year the independent team of Anja Franke Hedegaard and Marie Bruun Yde curates the alternative art fair, alt_cph11: Encounters. The two curators chose participating artists and independent art spaces to make and show work around the theme of ‘encounters in public space’. The invited artists and art spaces bring work that involves interaction, architecture, site-specific performance, creative design and rethinking contemporary life. Art designed to involve the audience and inspire people to step outside their everyday routines characterises the intentions of alt_cph11: Encounters. Events range from the strange to the imaginative, like the art parade where everyone can participate, organised by US-based collaborative artists Metabolic Studio, which happens on the first day of the fair. Other highlights include performances by Mary Coble and Spatial Interventions. An American living in Denmark,

Alright Alright & Big Bubble

Malmö Konsthall, Johannesgatan 7, Malmö; ends Nov 27; open daily 11:00-17:00; www.konsthal.malmo.se Bright colours, large-scale, playful installations and naïve drawing styles characterise these two exhibitions. Chris Johanson is a self-taught artist from the US heavily influenced by Californian skateboarding and graffiti culture, who creates his work from recycled paint and second-hand materials. In Alright Alright, he presents new drawings and paintings and a giant pyramid-shaped sculpture. Japanese artist Misaki Kawai, the creator of Big Bubble, works in a simple, manga comic book drawing-style making graphic paintings, drawings, and artists’ books. Kawai is also inspired by skateboard culture and created a large, site-specific mural, Pineapple Paradise, on a skateboard ramp in Malmö - documentation of which can be seen in her exhibition. BF

A battle of the arts - without one the other would be a flat affair, but together the two fairs offer a formidable experience

Coble will be performing for the duration of the fair, lowering found objects from the high rafters of the factory hall. Spatial Interventions, an art duo comprised of twin brothers, arrive in Copenhagen from the US, to perform their signature brand of acrobatic performance art inspired by the French urban sport of parkour. Basically, they

will be doing extreme feats of tandem climbing around architectural sites in Amager. Danish art group N55 will be showing their Space Frame bikes – reclining three-wheelers that can go incredibly fast. Kultivator, a group of four artists living on a farm in Sweden, will be presenting new posters. This group is interesting because of their

connection with the art and agriculture movement, which is an internationally popular trend in contemporary art. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, Brett Bloom, another American living in Denmark, has organised a debate with arts professionals on the topic of art in public space and how cultural work can imagine an alternative

to the current global economy. So, while Art Copenhagen ignores the recession with a big art party, alt_cph11: Encounters tries to face it head on with interactive, eccentric, and colourful art projects and discussions. Two different art worlds, one weekend – should be interesting.

Twenty artists show examples of their technique at Bredgade Kunsthall. The artisans in the exhibition span several generations of Danish glassblowers, demonstrating how the local glass blowing movement has evolved over the years. The sculptural handwork ranges from the abstract to the practical, but always pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable in the medium of glass. BF

The exhibition is housed at the beautiful Møstings Hus in Frederiksberg Garden. In First Step to Connect, Peter Kruse Larsen, Heine Skjerning, and Alba S Enström take dance and the physical connections made while dancing as their inspiration. With this new display of artwork, the artists hope to illustrate how physical contact can happen over time and space. The initial relationship of the three artists making creative work together is expanded out to spark a connection with the viewing public. BF

Nils Stærk, Ny Carlsberg Vej 68, Cph V; ends Oct 22; open Mon-Fri 12:00-17:00, Sat 12:00-15:00; www.nilsstaerk.dk Ingvar Cronhammar and Morten Stræde work together to present a glossy set of new sculptures at Nils Stærk. The sculptural project brings two different artists together to explore their common fascination with industrial design. Cronhammar takes urban architecture and technology as his starting point, while Stræde begins with the airplane and its mechanics. The gallery is filled with the two artists giant competing sculptures. One red, one blue, the slick, angular pieces recall a science fiction environment. The two pieces have previously been shown at the Vendyssel Museum of Art and will travel to the Funen Art Museum in November. BF

The gallery, open since 1993, selects artists that it sees as defining the current mood in contemporary art, often showing the same artists several times in their exhibition space. World Time Clock and Used Cars is Jonathan Monk’s eighth exhibition with the gallery since 2001. Monk works in multiple media from photography, to painting, to neon, and even in bicycle parts. His work is inspired by art history and conceptual art. BF

This year the theme is an interactive seaside hotel. Hotel Nikolaj comes alive with theatre performances by international artists, video projections and strange smells throughout the gallery halls. Enter themed rooms and meet strange guests, as though you were in a real hotel. This promises to be a magical experience - perfect for families. BF

Living: Frontiers of Architecture III-IV

Cirkulations Centralen, Nobelvägen 125, Malmö, Sweden; ends Sept 18; open Fri 16:00-19:00, Sat-Sun 1-17:00; www.cirkulationscentralen.com Danish photographer and filmmaker Katharina Koebacher opens a new exhibition of photographs at Cirkulations Centralen, an artist-run gallery in Malmö, which opened in 2003 and has shown over 80 exhibitions. Koebacher’s new series of photographs documents architectural elements in a manner bordering on abstraction. The buildings in her images move from interior to exterior, but rather than being banal documents of the contemporary built landscape, the images shift into patches of colour and light. Line, shape and form are the main focus of Koebacher’s work. BF

Blue Notes

Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Flæsketorvet 85, Cph V; ends Oct 8; open Tue-Fri 13:00– 18:00; Sat, 12:00–16:00; www.bjerggaard.com The Danish photographer Erik Steffensen, a former professor at the Danish Royal Art Academy, will be showing a new collection of his signature expressionistic images. The title refers to the blue note - a musical term for a note played at a lower pitch and held out longer, typically in jazz, rock or blues music. Inspired by popular culture, like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, and art history alike, Steffensen’ s photographs are a mix of film and painting references blended into dream-like images. BF

Jørgen Haugen Sørensen

The paintings combine his interest in how the city’s ruins are covered with lush and diverse vegetation – a real-life apocalyptic landscape. Piles of wood and plastic are reminiscent of houses, in contrast to the landscapes shown in the paintings. BF

Tunnel of Fear

Terms of Belonging is an international group show that looks at alternative forms of community. Artists in this exhibition collaborate with each other and the audience to produce the artworks. Ahmet Cevdet Bey: Tunnel of Fear focuses on a strange, new collaboration by two Turkish artists, Ahmet Ögüt and Cevdet Erek. The two Istanbul-based artists have merged identities to become a fictional character: mad scientist Ahmet Cevdet Bey. This strange relationship is played out in a ‘chamber of horrors’ style installation about the fictional character and his work. BF

The New York City-based painter has an ambivalent fascination with the media, popular culture, and the contemporary 24-hour news cycle. His paintings appear to be historical in content, at first glance, but contain celebrities like Charlie Sheen and Amy Winehouse in celebrated poses on closer inspection. BF

In 2001, their first album Live at the Matterhorn was released, selling barely 10,000 copies, but earning the group esteem throughout the country. Following a series of governmental grants that energised the local live scene, Fat Freddy’s Drop became recognised as one of New Zealand’s most exciting live acts. Their singles began to attract radio play, leading to a number of compilation albums released through

Despite having only released two studio albums, the group, which was formed in 2003 in St Albans, have been heavily influential on the international scene and have received a hatful of major industry awards. The band’s fan base in Europe remains as faithful as ever, and Fat Freddy’s Drop has not forgotten it. With much of their success stemming from European support, they make it their mission to please. Clipse have a massive following in Copenhagen and even though it will only be one half of the duo – with Pusha T performing some of his experimental solo material – he’ll still draw in a sizeable crowd. Both a technically skilled guitarist and charming vocalist, it’s a mystery why seeing Banks is still free of charge – despite being a popular resident musician at the capital’s prime blues joint. Although it’s not a big concert by any means, it’s a decent opportunity to see what Mojo Bar is all about: light, fun entertainment heralded by local, talented musicians. (English/Danish) DvdN

first heard of tUnE yArDs when I came across the music video for the track ‘Bizness’. It’s a cute and creative video that starts with bored children taking over their classroom and ends with a colourful modern dance sequence with plenty of face pulling. But did I like the video more than the song – a catchy anthem with peculiar looped vocals, bright horns? And so I went to see tUnE yArDs on a miserable evening at Vega. I hoped to just catch an hour of the show and leave early because I only had enough money for one beer, but I got there too early so I was forced to watch the warm-up act. It was Danish three-piece Thulebasen – two guitarists and a female drummer with a short bob haircut and oversized glasses. One of the guitarist’s hair receded almost to his crown before it shot up electrocution style. The other guitarist was badly dressed. Great, ironic anti-hipsters I thought. But their dreamy rock was terrific, interspersed with drum solos, distorted guitars, unintelligible vocals and plenty of reverb. Kind of like Beck in the ‘90s. I was so glued to the wall by the time tUnE yArDs appeared, with Merrill Garbus taking the

front of the stage with her bassist and two saxophonists behind her. They were wearing neon facepaint, bright clothes and Garbus seemed to have two purple feather boas sprouting from her shoulders. And then she start singing, recording her voice over and again to create a looped harmony, before turning to her rudimentary drum kit and recording a simple beat. As they looped over each other she whipped out her amplified ukulele, grimacing as she sang over her own choral back-

ing. Then the baes guitar dropped and people started whooping as it became obvious that this was no ordinary musical experience. Her backing band stayed on the edge of the stage but it was clear that if she had enough hands she’d play all the instruments herself. Her tiny ukulele – which she held just under her chin – led the music in simple finger-plucked melodies. But it was her voice that really stole the show, booming, yelling and yelping out of her little body as she stared over the heads of the crowd

at something in the far distance. Rough, untamed and elevating, her vocals moved from emphatic screams to controlled harmonies and back to a hysterical wailing. “Do you want to live?!” Garbus shouted to which we all shouted back “YES!”, her wild-woman act breaking as she smiled, obviously happy. And then she was back in character, child-like and feral – an artist living out a fantasy. She might seem pretty mental, but I hear most true artists are. PETER STANNERS

ELEVEN years old this year, Buster Film Festival is roughly the age of many members of its audience. This year some 160 films have been selected for both young children and older youth, and anyone young at heart is welcome to the screenings. Many of the films are dramatic tales of growing up, others are fun and silly, and then there are those that manage to combine the two. The festival’s focus is especially on international productions depicting the lives of kids as they grow up in other countries around the world. These are films selected and brought to Denmark, which would not have otherwise made it into the normal cinema schedule. In addition to feature films, Buster shows short films and documentaries, some of which will be premiere screenings of new works. Workshops and film-related activities also make up a large part of the tenday festival. Each film is listed in the programme of events with a recommended age range. Films for those who are 13 and older are shown in their original language with English subtitles, or without subtitles if the original language is English. THE SIGN in the window at the local butcher’s store had me puzzled: “Husk at bestille valgflæsk” it read, which loosely translated means “Remember to order election night’s sliced pork belly.” Having never heard the term valgflæsk before, and with the election this week, I felt a sudden panic come over me. Was there some sort of political eating ritual occurring on Tuesday, and if so, just how much pork was I going to have to order? As it turns out, valgflæsk is a word with a double meaning. The first definition is a term used to describe the generous promises and claims politicians make to voters during an election period. From the way I understand it, it’s a politician’s “sweet talk”.

The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC

The second definition is the one I prefer. It refers to thick slices of crispy fried pork belly eaten on the evening of the election. Most prepare the meat identically to the Danish classic stegtflæsk med persille sauce ogkartofler (fried pork belly with parsley sauce and potatoes). Yet some others, especially Danes living on the island of Funen, prefer to prepare the pork with stewed apples and rye bread, as in Danish æbleflæsk. Who knows if the election will turn out as expected, but for me, having heard the politicians dish up their best valgflæsk every day for the past three weeks, it’ll be a treat when Election Day comes, Danes cast their votes and I can indulge in my very own plateful of homemade valgflæsk. $ $ $

There were too highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), whih was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Valgflæsk: Election night’s fried pork belly with potatoes and parsley sauce

About 600g of pork belly, sliced 1/2 cm thick 800–1,000g small, new potatoes 1 tbsp unsalted butter 1 3/4 tbsp flour 4 dl low-fat milk (letmælk) 2 tsp chopped parsley Pat pork dry with paper towels, and season with salt and pepper. Over medium heat in thick-bottomed skillet, brown the slices until golden and very crispy. Drain on paper towels to rid of excess fat. In the meantime, boil potatoes in salted water until cooked through. Turn off the heat, and allow them to stand in hot water for five minutes. Prepare the sauce by melting the butter in small saucepan, stir in flour and slowly add in milk while whisking constantly. Season to taste and stir in parsley. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Drain potatoes. Yield: four portions.

On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, upstairs there’s a new lounge area - the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, a private function the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. Beer so good you won’t know whether to eat or drink it

nothing beats a beer in the open air - unless you’re talking about scallops cooked in beer over an open fire

The owners of Brewpub know full well that people may be apprehensive. “Beer is used along with other commodities to contribute to an overall taste experience. We therefore use our beer in food, where it can balance it through bitterness, sweetness and fullness,” they contend. although a great beer could have gone perfectly with the meats, I appraised a Bruna Grimaldi Barbera d’alba “scassa” red. or should I say I delighted in this. If oaky flavours better suit your pallet though, don’t ignore the spinelli, sangiovese that simon characterised as smooth.

Famous author Washington Irving once remarked “Those who drink beer will think beer”, and this is exactly the approach the owners of Brewpub Copenhagen have taken. many of you I’m sure would have soaked up the ‘Beirgarten’ atmosphere here over the summer months, slurping down a beer from Brewpub’s very-own microbrewery. But with the Danish winter on our doorstep, it’s time to explore the hidden gem sitting inside this 17th Century building: the Brewpub restaurant. to start our evening there we of course felt dutifully obliged to acquaint ourselves with one of the beer tastings. We were presented with five beers (half a litre in total) comprising some of the most diverse and creative flavours I’ve ever come across. under brewmaster hans-ole Kraglund, Brewpub’s aim is to contribute to the beer world’s diversity by ‘experimenting’. If you have a taste for light beer I’d go for the seductive Vester Weiss that hits you with spicy banana flavours. But if you prefer something a little darker, my dining partner, simon, would champion the amarillo ‘red ale’, a beer with distinct notes of caramel malts and citrus. Brewpub’s approach for brewing distinctive, avant-garde beer has also translated into the food. Beginning with the starter we had the option of scallops, veal soup or roasted duck. Now being from New Zealand, I know what great scallops taste like but never before have I had them cooked like that. served with lemon compote adjusted with the brewery’s pale ale, they were divine. move over oysters because these are the new ‘pearls of the sea’. In contrast to this, simon enjoyed the Veal consommé with fried sweetbreads. This consisted of a clear soup of veal poached in the brewery’s ale and fried with diced apples. Who knew that beer could taste so good in a soup? They obviously did. alongside the food, our lovely waitress recommended a vivifying chardonnay from the well matched wine list. While not overly comprehensive, the wine list is like that pair of jeans that fits perfectly each drop has its place. For my main I enjoyed roast lamb cooked to perfection, served with alepickled cabbage, accompanied with a wheat beer sauce. and no true pub would be complete without a selection of steaks. They take the meaning of ‘man-size’ piece of steak seriously here. simon described his 280 grams of Danish ribeye as flavour, flavour, flavour - he’s a man of few words.

Now it’s not often that I go for a dessert when I’m dining out, but I made an exception here. and although simon’s 280g steak was enough for three people, he also made an exception. Looking at the dessert menu though was a little like watching Thomas Vinterberg’s Festen - you’re not sure where it’s going or how you’re supposed to take it. all three dessert options were made with beer. however, simon’s Panna cotta boiled in buttermilk and the brewery’s pale ale was a saporous treat and I relished my liquorice ice cream, served on a compote of

plums cooked in the brewery’s ale. a zippy and lively experience, I could easily have eaten two helpings. We ended our journey with beer cocktails. These aren’t for the faint-hearted but again epitomise Brewpub’s aim to reeducate people’s pallets regarding beer. Full of surprises, striking flavors and innovativeness, it would be unfair to deny your taste buds a Brewpub experience. and who knows, you might even start experimenting with beer in your own kitchen.

HE STORY is the time honored bad guy makes good. It has a feel of those ‘70s’ road films, with camera views from inside the car, and it has the look of an ‘80s’ films, with its florescent pink lettering for the opening credits. But just make sure that you are in your seats early for this one, otherwise you’ll miss one of the most brilliant opening scenes in a movie ... ever. Oh, and the rest of the movie is pretty damn good too. “I give you a five-minute window …” Apparently loosely adapted from a novella by James Sallis and screen written by Hossein Amini, Drive is the story of Driver (Gosling), an auto mechanic by day, and a part-timeHollywood stuntman, who moonlights as a getaway driver for hire by night. His boss, for more or less all three jobs, Shannon (Cranston) would say that when this guy gets behind the wheel there is no-one better and nothing that he can’t do. He is the uber-essence of calm, cool and collected, but with a serious temper simmering beneath the surface. “Hey kid, wanna toothpick?” However, fate (as it always seems to do, especially in the movies) inter-

Ryan Gosling’s character neglects to look out for cyclists in his right-hand wing mirror - guess he doesn’t live in Copenhagen venes into Driver’s secluded life when he runs into his neighbour Irene (Mulligan) and her son Benicio (Kaden Leos) from down the hall. Driver bonds with the son while sparks glimmer with Irene. But once her husband Standard (Oscar Isaac) comes home from jail, Driver finds himself on the outside looking in and yet is still pulled in to help the family, eventually putting himself on the wrong side of Nino (Perlman) and Bernie Rose (Brooks), who are definitely the wrong people to be on the wrong side of. “……………..” As with Winding Refn’s Pusher films,

there is an intense feeling throughout; even when the characters are just sitting there, it’s so thick it’s like you are watching the film underwater. There is a distinct lack of unnecessary dialogue, which is extremely refreshing, and the action isn’t chopped up to fool us into thinking it is more exciting than it is. This tactic works when you have a group of talented actors, which Drive has in spades. There wasn’t a weak link in the bunch although my favorite would have to be Brooks taking a turn against type and playing baddie Bernie Rose. He plays it so well it will have you wondering why he hasn’t been playing the bad guy his

whole career. “It’s done. It’s done. There’s no pain.” Drive also has no problem using and showing very graphic violence. Gosling hit the nail on the head when he said that Winding Refn always gives you a scene or two that you really remember. There were at least three such scenes that had us in the screening room, well, it was obvious that the scenes resonated. He manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. And these ain’t no Hollywood kills, the characters in Drive make sure, with gruesome effect, that their assail-

ants are dead. And I mean dead dead. Dead. Sharing much of what made the Pusher movies entertaining, Drive should give Winding Refn a foot into the door of Hollywood and big budgets, big stars and big expectations. Drive is a gripping action movie by way of atmosphere and build-up. The marriage (as Winding Refn puts it) went so well between him and Gosling that they have embarked on a remake of Logan’s Run. I didn’t see the first one, but if the new one is anywhere close to as good as Drive, then I will be one of the first in line to see it.

Change the record! This genre’s been done to death!

HE CHANGE-UP (Hvis Jeg Var Dig) arrives at the bottom of a long list of films that range from the mediocre - Freaky Friday, Vice Versa and Like Father Like Son to the sublime: Being John Malcovich. These are films that

belong to a curious sub-genre known as ‘The Body Swap’. At its most predictable, there’s traditionally two people who have somehow lost touch with one another and a magically occurring body swap event enables them to learn something about each other’s lives, ensuring they both come away from their ordeal grateful to be back in their own skin, but with a deeper appreciation of who the other one is and what they do. And maybe right before that, after wanting nothing more than to get their own bodies back, one or both of them will wobble in their convictions, because of just how darned great it is to be that other person.

Dave (Bateman) is a corporate lawyer with everything he could wish for - financial security, a wife and kids he adores - while his best pal Mitch (Reynolds) is a bachelor, a jobbing actor who lives from hand-to-mouth and girl- to-girl. A night of drinking sees the 30-something pair each conclude that the other has a better life - while urinating into a magic fountain ... The Change-Up makes little attempt to fix a formula that it obviously perceives as being in perfect working order. As a result, you’ve seen this film before - at least once. So, should you bother? If you’re looking for formulaic brainrot with belly laughs, you could

do worse. The film is quite successful in making you identify with, or at least care for, the two leads. This is down to the combination of good direction, a well written screenplay, and the naturally amusing leads. There are a handful of genuinely funny moments and the writing can be joyfully risqué in places. Bateman and Reynolds are eminently likeable, while Mann in particular provides great support. Nevertheless, at nearly two hours, it’ s just too long. Essentially The ChangeUp’s gags and performances would have benefited greatly from body swapping with a more ambitious vehicle. MARK WALKER

New this Week Fright Night Dir: Craig Gillespie; 2011; 106 mins; Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant Mixing horror with comedy is a frightening combination but audiences can sink their teeth into a great piece of film with Fright Night. Many critics are hailing the film even better than the 1985 original. The story goes that popular teenager Charley Brewster (Yelchin) guesses his new neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Farrell) is a vampire responsible for a string of recent deaths. When no-one believes him, he enlists a self proclaimed vampire killer to help him take down Jerry. Fright Night has all the elements you’d expect from a teenage vampire movie and that’s one of its problems: predictability. However, Farrell gives a stellar performance as the evil yet slyly amusing Jerry. Smart, funny, and stylishly gory to boot, Fright Night deserves a bite. EM

Birdemic sees flocks of evil birds attack California and following that is Things, described as taking “great courage and strength to sit through”. Go along and experience films so pathetic they’ll bring tears to your eyes. EM

Book Your Tickets Tree of Life (11) Dir: Terence Malick; 2011, 139 mins; Brad Pitt, Sean Penn There are too many beautifully observed moments to dismiss Malick’s fifth film in over 40 years with derision as was the case recently at a Cannes screening. Told in several timelines, the film follows a religious Midwest family in the 1950s and is a rare opportunity to experience pure cinema as it was intended. MW

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II (11) Dir: David Yates; 2011, 130 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint The Harry Potter finale ended an era last July. Cinematic magic follows our heroic threesome with a more assured Harry complementing lightning-quick thinking Hermione and the steady presence of Ron. With a litany of impossible foes and an actionpacked battle sequence finale, it’s one of the better HP films. SS

Melancholia (15) Dir: Lars Von Trier; 2011, 130 mins; Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg Justine feels trapped in a limousine with her newly wedded husband en route to her own wedding reception. From here, we witness the end of the world: a giant planet called Melancholia is on a course towards Earth. The film brilliantly conveys a paralysing loneliness - the claustrophobic sensation of being trapped inside one’s own skin. MW

Avoid like the Plague Cowboys and Aliens (11) Dir: Jon Favreau; 2011, 118 mins; Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford Two of the most incompatible genres combine in this film, to make it a series of mind numbing pointless plot strands. Looking more like a satirical piece on the cowboy genre, the film takes itself far too seriously. You’ll likely leave the cinema wondering how this piece of filmmaking actually made it to cinemas when it should have been trashed after the first draft. AS

Zookeeper (3) Dir: Frank Coraci; 2011, 102 mins; Kevin James, Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb Take heed of the advice of the Christian Science Monitor which says “there should be a subdivision of the ASPCA - American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Audiences.” James might be reasonably funny on television, but here he

once again shows that he is not able to carry the role of romantic lead. VS

Crazy, Stupid, Love Dir: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa; 2011; 118 mins; Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling Steve Carell re-enacts his 40-Year-Old Virgin character in this fluffy, finely manicured romcom. A sexually stunted middle aged man, Carell is cast off by his childhood sweetheart and endures an unsuccessful stint in the dating world. That is until serial seducer Ryan Gosling comes along and announces “I’m going to help you rediscover your manhood!”. Carell and Gosling make an appealing buddy couple, with Gosling especially alluring as a lithe and ruthless tomcat. A tone of outright pleasure can be had watching this; however the slapstick finale feels incredibly forced, contrived and hopelessly banal. AS

Colombiana (11) Dir: Olivier Megaton; 2011, 107 mins; Zoe Saldana, Michael Vartan, Callum Blue The film is low on plot, but high on explosions and clichés. You can’t blame the actors for the failings - they are working with a wooden script (as New York Magazine said, “ the lines sound like place-cards.”) and a sometimes ludicrous story. Best suited for the 13-year-old adolescent, whose parents have censored their internet access.VS

The guy that bought you Super Size Me, acclaimed filmmaker and master provocateur Morgan Spurlock, brings you the first every ‘docbuster’! In The Greatest Movie Ever Sold Spurlock tries to uncover the secrets that big name advertising companies use to sell you their products. Enlightening and frightening, the film uncovers some interesting truths and shows. Disarming, candid and playful, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold sees Spurlock sell his soul so you won’t have to. EM

Submarine (7) Dir: Richard Ayoade; 2010; 92 mins; Craig Roberts, Noah Taylor, Sally Hawkins. Set on the Welsh seaside, this gently stirring coming of age film is darkly funny and intriguing. The film sees Oliver Tate (Roberts) struggling to fit in. He’s not popular or picked on but he has a clear objective in life: to lose his virginity before his next birthday. The object of his affection is the rather plain Jordana, and thus the courtship begins. The Wall Street Journal found the film “wonderfully funny and subversively affecting”. However don’t expect a catchy pace or too much character development. The film gently saunters along much like a submarine with a little too much fluff in some spots. KE

Horrible Bosses (11) Dir: Seth Gordon; 2011; 100 mins; Jason Bateman, Charlie Day Ferociously plot-driven with several hilarious scenes, Horrible Bosses unfolds like dominos tumbling faster and louder, creating ever grimmer repercussions for the main characters, a likeable bunch of average guys. Bobby Fischer Against the World (11) Dir: Liz Garbus; 2011; 93 min Bobby Fischer, Regina Fischer Bobby Fischer reassuringly reminds us that the price of success is one that most would not wish to pay. With archive footage, photographs, and with contemporary interviews familiar to countless other documentary portraits, this is a poignant and unsettling film, but Garbus provides no revelations for anyone who has followed Fischer’s story. Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France com, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 At the stroke of midnight, Gil discovers a portal to the 1920s in the shape of an automobile; he is whisked away to a Paris of yesteryear populated by the literary and artistic giants of that age. Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation – this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

UNFORGIVEN is a three-part British miniseries that newspapers The Independent described as “an engrossing, believable story, cleverly and thrillingly told”, and The Guardian as “measured and mesmerising, and absolutely first-rate”. It was a case of “five stars all round, and six” from the Inde for Suranne Jones, who plays a woman released from prison after serving 15 years for killing two police officers on her property. While she is keen to be reunited with her sister, who as a sixyear-old was adopted by a frightfully middle-class family (Douglas Hodge and Jemma Redgrave), the families of the dead policemen are hell-bent on destroying her life. Talking of coppers, it’s a miracle given how creepy the actor Aidan Gillen is that he’s never played

one. The name might not ring a bell, but you probably know him for playing corrupt politicians in The Wire and Game of Thrones, and as the older man in Queer as Folk. In six-part drama series Identity he links up with the dependable Keeley Hawes to tackle identity fraud in a drama in which, according to The Guardian, “style took on substance, and won”. Despite its intriguing concept, it has terrible dialogue, contends the newspaper, and “seems obsessed with the way it looks - almost as if the art director is running the show”. Elsewhere this week, Feasts (BBC World, Sun 16:10) gets up close and personal with Mexico’s Day of the Dead; grab the first episode of the 2011 series of the BBC’s Natural World (SV2, Sun
