The Omni 4-in-1 from Franke is the world’s first lever-operated kitchen mixer tap to offer the convenience of filtered boiling, filtered cold and mains hot and cold water in one tap

A FIRST FROM FRANKE Franke is first to market with its leveroperated 4-in-1 mixer tap, dispensing filtered 100°C boiling, filtered cold and mains hot and cold water in one tap.

A

s 3-in-1 boiling water taps become more established in the market, renowned sink and tap manufacturer Franke, has taken the technology design progression a step further and launched the world’s first lever-operated 4-in-1 kitchen mixer tap, the Omni. Recognising the popularity of filtered water, it’s the only tap on the market to offer filtered boiling water at a full 100°C, filtered cold water and standard mains hot and cold, all from a lever-operated single tap mixer. Available now, the Omni – which marries the timeless appeal of a swan-neck spout with the build quality and prestige of hi-shine solid stainless steel – is simple to operate and fully reversible. One lever is for the mains hot and cold, while the other lever dispenses the filtered boiling and filtered cold water.

Premium filtration is assured using the technology that currently features on all Franke Filterflow® taps, with a separate tube to maintain the water’s integrity and an LED that tells you when a new filter cartridge needs fitting every six to nine months. The filter, which removes impurities but leaves in healthy minerals in the drinking water, also reduces the build-up of limescale in the boiling water tank. The 100°C boiling water function boasts triple safety features including a push and turn activation function, a spring-loaded shut off and a child safety clip that can be fitted optionally to prevent the tap from being accidentally turned on. The compact four-litre stainless steel tank and filter fit neatly into the under-sink cupboard and will dispense the equivalent of eight cups of hot water with a fast replenishment time.

specialist taps kitchen & bathroom journal december 2015 • 5 The easy-to-use Franke Omni 4-in-1 tap benefits from a simple lever operation, with triple safety features to prevent boiling water from being accidentally dispensed

Recognising the importance of easy installation, the specialist tap can be fitted on average in two hours with virtually no tools and minimal plumbing skills. It features colour coded plug-and-play assembly in conjunction with existing plumbing and the ‘no tool’ Nutrunna® technology on the hoses allow for hand-tightening. Steve Rutter, Marketing Operations Manager at Franke comments, “We know from our research that consumers value products that are genuinely lifestyle enhancing and Omni means they can have the best of both worlds with combined filtration and boiling water functions. The new tap includes many patented features and is a game changer that moves tap innovation and technology on to the next level with exceptional functionality, but at a very attractive price point that will help retailers generate sales. This boiling water category is the fastest growing one with many brands entering now and we want to cut through with a product that is truly different and which retailers can sell with confidence. The additional benefit of filtration is available for only a small premium compared to current 3-in-1 options and compared to current 4-in-1 electronic options it can be up to 50% cheaper. “We wanted Omni to be high performance, easy to install and simple to maintain. And for it be retailed at a compelling price that gives retailers a great product to work with and attract customers. We’re proud to have developed the next generation of tap and we are strongly supporting our retailers both with full after-sales care and full scale marketing support.”

The classic design style of the Omni 4-in-1 tap is available in high shine solid stainless steel and will complement traditional and modern kitchens alike

MARKET INSIGHT “The sales of steaming hot and filtered water taps have continued to grow dramatically over the past few years, and the consumer is increasingly regarding the specialist tap as a necessity, rather than a luxury. This development is largely due to the heightened profile and increased functionality, of the all-inone models. “With the growing trend towards more minimalist kitchens and the footprint of the kitchen getting ever smaller, the desire to keep worktops clutter-free is becoming a necessity, and a kettle or water filter jug is now more often regarded as just another item taking up space in the kitchen. Open-plan living has brought the kitchen into the living room and designers are responding to consumers’ evolving needs by introducing sleeker designs that aim to achieve continuity throughout the whole space. As a result, consumers are looking for appliances that will either blend unobtrusively into the kitchen design or act as a stylish focal point to catch the eye. Increasing numbers of consumers are choosing to cast out the kettle and install a steaming hot water tap in order to streamline the kitchen, save time, increase convenience and flexibility, as well as reduce the impact on the environment. “The media also frequently shows celebrities using steaming hot water taps in their homes and all-in-one taps are getting an increasing amount of exposure on television, as they are regularly used on popular cooking shows. This has created a real demand for the product, which will undoubtedly continue to grow in the future. In addition, the entrance of new brands and manufacturers has widened the market and made the specialist tap more accessible and more in vogue than ever before.” Linda Phoutthasak Marketing Manager, Insinkerator Europe

Make it deliver real boiling water at 100째C but make it completely safe they said. Make it provide fresh filtered water. Make it perfect for mains cold and hot water too. Make it stylishly engineered in stainless steel. Make it easy to install and ideal for retrofitting in existing kitchens. Make it wonderful. Discover the new Omni 4-in-1 tap at Franke.co.uk/Omni

MARKET INSIGHT

SPECIALIST TAPS Multifunctional taps for the modern home

2

“With the market becoming saturated with so many different designs and features, it is important for both retailer and customer do not become blinkered. Quality, function and performance will vary greatly from brand to brand, so ensure the model chosen is WRAS approved as this will guarantee the hot tap is fully accredited and operates safely. “At the top end of the market, you will see brassware designs with added value features such as Nano-technology – which allow filtered water to pass through and be free from chlorine and other harmful metals and bacteria - and the ability to provide steaming hot water in an instant. Slightly more expensive, these revolutionary systems are slowly replacing the traditional monobloc kitchen mixer; giving greater user-control, increased function and performance. “I am a strong believer that classic kitchen interiors will always carry favour and with traditional design being emulated in all aspects of the kitchen, it is no surprise technologically advanced products such as the instant hot tap has become somewhat skeuomorphic. I believe this change in style is due to the hot tap being long associated with contemporary brassware design in an industry where classic and traditional interiors remain so popular. As such, developments in terms of style have been made to create mini hot water taps.” David Cole Sales Director, Perrin & Rowe

1. Perrin & Rowe’s Phoenix3-in-1 hot tap dispenses hot, cold and up-to 99°C steaming hot filtered water from one tap. Featuring a 2.4 litre digital tank with touch screen display, the tap features a Nano-technology filter that allows hot water to be free from chlorine and other harmful metals and bacteria. Also acting as a lime inhibitor, the filter will additionally increase the tanks lifespan by preventing lime scale build-up. 01708 526 361 • www.perrinandrowe.co.uk

Schüller retailers are able to create unique and individual designs for Schüller each customer and every budget

Editorial

Nova and Biella combine to create stylish open plan living

SECURING SUCCESS Schüller has smashed its UK sales record with a 44% increase for September but it’s not just stylish kitchen ranges that have secured its success.

Silent motion glass shutters, as shown in the Monza range, part of the schüller.C collection

I

f there is one thing Britain does really well, it is being able to source the very best products from around the world. When it comes to kitchens, the very best is often seen to come from Germany. Europe is the birthplace of open plan living and for the UK consumer, it’s no longer just a trend but a way of life. So it makes sense that the successful kitchen retailer chooses to work with a leading German kitchen manufacturer. Schüller retailers have one thing in common; they understand that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. When everything works in unison, you create success. Wayne Dance, MD of InHouse, the UK’s exclusive Schüller distributor explains, “Schüller may well have the most comprehensive collection available and offer an inexhaustible array of solutions but it takes more than the best designs and highest standards to secure long-term growth in the UK market. Schüller retailers know that displaying the best kitchens is just part of the bigger picture, what goes on behind the door front is equally important.”

Impressive and on-going investment is behind Schüller’s success. A factory that manufactures over 100,000 kitchens each year, ensures retailers can offer beautiful kitchens at affordable price points. All kitchens are manufactured to individual order and within 0.1mm precision. What retailers need is assurance that every part of the supply process helps them gain that all-important referral to build their reputation – something Schüller prides itself on. A dedicated fleet with 99.99% of kitchens delivered on time goes without saying. Full UK support from InHouse comes hand in hand with a national marketing campaign. Schüller regularly appears in the national trade and consumer press, with personalised branding and POS supporting the retailer further. Kitchen design is about creating the perfect solutions for family life. Despite being one of the largest kitchen manufacturers in Europe, Schüller remains a family run business. Wayne adds, “When you work with Schüller and InHouse, you become part of that family.”

“Although we cannot speak for every European manufacturer, in general German kitchen sales have seen a huge increase over the last two years. In terms of UK turnover we should see sales increase by 20% in 2015 and again in 2016. The growth of the contract market is certainly a major factor in this.” Graham Hopper, UK Sales Director, Leicht

“Stainless steel is a material with many benefits and lasting qualities, which continues to hold more ace cards than its competition. In recent times especially, it has been amazing how stainless steel has remained at the top of the consumer’s wish list despite repeated predictions of its imminent demise. All sorts of contenders have been favoured to topple this intriguing alloy from its throne, including ice white, oiled bronze, antique copper, meteorite and glass. Black has also been touted as ‘the new stainless steel’ but continues to await its coronation.” Charles Bernstein, Category Manager Whirlpool Built-in and Integrated

Technology IN THE KITCHEN “The internet, social media and the rise of the smart phone, which has for many become the remote control to our busy lives, has changed the way we do almost everything. With consumers demanding more convenience than ever before and each of us leading an increasingly ‘connected’ lifestyle, we expect everything to become more intelligent, with Wi-Fi-enabled kitchen appliances becoming part of everyday life. “Our independent Hoover Household Report 2015 found that 85 per cent of consumers own a smartphone or tablet, while the average consumer spends

three hours of their leisure time each day using Wi-Fi – that is 21 hours per week or 45 days in a year! The future of the electrical industry is definitely ‘connected’, with appliances controllable via Wi-Fi. Consumer expectations will always drive innovation in the appliance sector, and Wi-Fi is the next step in this evolution. In fact, by 2017 our vision is for all Hoover appliances to be 100 per cent connected, this is three years ahead of the market prediction, which anticipates the market will be 100 per cent connected by 2020.” Steve Macdonald, Marketing Director, Freestanding Division Hoover Candy UK

MULTIGENERATIONAL BATHROOMS Multigenerational bathrooms are in demand with figures suggesting that almost 36 million adults in Britain have lived with another generation of their family.

multigenerational bathrooms kitchen & bathroom journal december 2015 • 29

MARKET INSIGHT How are sales for multigenerational bathrooms performing year on year in terms of volume, value and price? “With approximately two million showers sold in the UK each year, the electric shower is still the dominant product worth 60 per cent of the total market - that’s around 1.2 million units. Of this, thermostatic electrics now account for around 20% of the market which equates to an estimated 240,000 units per annum. “By comparison, thermostatic control has long been the norm in the mixer sector which accounts for 23 per cent of the total shower market. With roughly 460,000 mixer showers sold in the UK each year at present, 98 per cent of these will be thermostatic with just two per cent of the market now made up of manual mixer valves. “In the foreseeable future, sales of multigenerational bathroom products look set to increase in line with the UK’s ageing population. As such, manufacturers of bathroom products have had to react by developing designs which are suitable for the very youngest users through to the oldest.” David Tutton, Managing Director at The Great British Shower Company, Triton

How are manufacturers of multifunctional bathroom products satisfying the needs of the whole family and how has this changed in the last 10 years? “There has long been a stigma attached to ‘inclusive’ bathroom products, with the phrase often conjuring up images of unsightly grab rails and shower stools. However, the reality really couldn’t be more different as there is now a plethora of solutions available that fit seamlessly into any style of bathroom and enable designers to future-proof the space in such a way as to maximise comfort levels for all. “It is important when specifying bathroom products for a multigenerational bathroom to consider who will be using the space, what their needs are now, and how these may change in the future. Simple measures such as specifying a thermostatic shower mixer and thermostatic taps will ensure safety in the family bathroom without compromising on the design in any way. Similarly, a raised height WC looks almost identical to a standard toilet, but saves anyone who is less mobile, or indeed who is tall, from having to bend too much.” Georgina Spencer, Head of Marketing, Roca Group (UK)

How is the industry catering for multifunctional bathrooms in small spaces? “Over time we have noticed a gradual investment in smaller and more hidden bathroom accessories with consumers looking to maximise their space to accommodate the whole family. Tiered baskets that tuck away into the corner, hook-over storage that fits neatly behind the door and wall-mounted mirrored cabinets with several adjustable shelves are a practical addition. Manufacturing the same products in a variety of heights and sizes to suite all ages and lifestyles, storage solutions cater for large families, cloakrooms and en-suites.” Peter Pegden, Product and Procurement Director, Croydex

Softly, softly. Introducing the Cabo Soft Close Shower Door System A frameless sliding shower door system that includes a double soft-brake closing system. The system which is completely concealed within the header softly cushions the door as it closes and opens. If it’s not CABO, it’s not double soft close.

RAK Tonique

A

s one of the largest sanitaryware suppliers in the country, RAK’s strength is combining its highly saleable sanitaryware with the myriad of tile choices it offers to both its retailers and end users. Having established its value-for-money label over the years, RAK has concentrated on developing its sanitaryware designs to appeal to a wide range of discerning end users. Its new catalogue illustrates this well and this year, RAK launches its Origin 62 and Harmony Collections to showcase its diverse products in a new light. RAK UK’s Joint Managing Director/ Chairman, Rob Jull explains, “The association between our entry-level product, Origin 62 and New Forum porcelain tiles demonstrates that you can produce a dynamic, contemporary bathroom without spending more than you planned or budgeted for. MARKET INSIGHT How are sales for basins and WCs performing in the UK? “The sanitaryware market has witnessed a return to growth over the past year or so, fuelled by a strong economy, a positive property market and improved consumer confidence. There is a greater willingness among consumers to invest in high-end sanitaryware, with quality being seen as a key to assurance of a good return on their investment.” Joanne Langton, Marketing Manager, Laufen

What are the latest basin trends on the market? “Consumers are looking for products that have been manufactured to stand the test of time. There is a notable influence from the European market with new contemporary ranges, which feature designer appeal with wall-hung basins in a variety of sizes leading the way. These are complemented with the most recent wall hung, back to wall and closecoupled WC options. Product designs vary from strong, angled lines to soft curves to suit a variety of bathroom styles.” Helen Shaw, Marketing Manager, Roper Rhodes

What materials are proving popular? “In terms of materials, ceramic remains the most popular option for washbasins due to its many practical benefits. However, there has been something of a revolution in the technology used to manufacture sanitaryware over the past year or two, with materials such as our SaphirKeramik, allowing for thinner profiles and larger pieces than have previously been possible with ceramic, making this by far the most versatile of materials for the bathroom.” Joanne Langton, Marketing Manager, Laufen

How can manufacturers cater for the smaller bathroom?

5. VitrA has launched Rim-Ex, a new comprehensive set of rimless WCs. The bowl features an easy clean surface and no rims or holes where dirt or harmful organisms can collect. To eradicate the need for a rim (as in most standard toilets), the Rim-Ex WCs employ a ceramic water distribution tool which distribute water effectively. 01235 750 990 • www.vitra.co.uk

“Wall-hung basins and WCs are great for freeing up valuable floor space and can create the illusion of a larger space, which is particularly useful for the UK’s smaller bathrooms. Short-projection WCs are also an obvious design choice, even more so if you go for a back-to-wall option with a concealed cistern. “There is also a growing market for short projection models, which are ideal for the UK’s smaller bathrooms. Comfort height WCs have also become more popular as the UK population’s average height and weight increases. Wall-hung WCs can also really cater for this as they can be mounted higher on the wall to suit.” Helen Shaw, Marketing Manager, Roper Rhodes

6. Ideal Standard’s Aquablade™ flush technology has incorporated its AquaBlade flush technology into its Concept collection and is available across close-coupled, wall-hung or back-to-wall WCs. Far from a gimmick, incorporating technology into the bathroom can really raise the comfort levels and often has a practical as well as aesthetic purpose. A shower toilet, for example, combines a WC and bidet in one unit so it has space-saving advantages, while leaving the user with a spa-like feeling of cleanliness. The latest model to be added to the market-leading shower toilet range from Geberit, the Geberit AquaClean Mera, takes bathroom technology to a new level. A proximity sensor automatically raises the WC lid and begins warming the seat on the user’s approach, before patented WhirlSpray shower technology provides gentle cleaning with warm water followed by the activation of a warm air dryer. Other technological features include a built-in odour extraction unit that fills the room with clean, fresh air, plus a ComfortLight to guide the user at night. Alongside comfort, the latest technology also maximises on flexibility of design in the

modern bathroom. Remote flush buttons can be sited away from the traditional area behind the WC; something that half of all UK householders like the idea of according to latest Geberit research. The Geberit Type01 and Type10 remote flush buttons give consumers a new level of design freedom, as they can be positioned up to 1.7m away from the cistern. Available for tiled and furniture installations, the flush buttons are compatible with Geberit’s Sigma and Omega cisterns and can be installed practically anywhere in the bathroom, into dry or solid walls. For complete co-ordination with any style of bathroom, the Type01 remote flush actuation comes in three colours and for both single and dual flush, while six different versions of the Type10 remote flush actuation are available. Such technological solutions spell the future for bathroom design, combining aesthetic and practical qualities that ensure the space is a comfortable place to be.
