Elliott Fairlie, Egger’s head of décor development

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE In an unprecedented J move that will set the scene for the next three years, Egger is phasing out Zoom and heralding in a new era with its new 2017-2019 UK & Ireland Manufacturing Collection... The new showroom is a designer’s paradise.

anuary 2017 marked the launch of Egger’s latest décor portfolio - and with it has come a major shakeup. Zoom is coming to an end and in its place Europe’s largest manufacturer of wood-based panels and laminates has launched the biggest collection it has ever presented to the KBB industry. “We got inspired by your success,” commented Egger UK’s Nick McClughin at a recent presentation in the company’s stunning new Hexham showroom, “And the result is a new collection that we will run for the next three years.” The 2017-2019 UK & Ireland Manufacturing Collection features 170 décors (predominantly MFC), 114 of which have matching laminates that are available from stock and are ideal where, for example, island units need to match with doors. There are 44 new designs and two new textures, not to mention an expanded offer of 100 décors on Euorolight. Central to the new collection is a larger range of 16 Feelwood décors with

deep textures and synchronised pore finishes that provide a realistic impression of real wood veneers. Egger’s decision to move to the ST9 texture across the standard unicolour range provides a better match with neutral combinations, while the use of new ST27 textured unicolours adds a timeless look to new shades such as U201 Pebble Grey and U636 Fjord Green. Egger’s vision for the next three years embodies variety, transparency, choice, reliability and inspiration. “We looked at the changes in society, both digital and social changes, researching in seven markets and asking the question how could we influence or support?” continued Nick. “Then we looked at the logistics and the investment that was needed to provide products and stock both the edging and the laminate so we could properly support out 11 main nationwide distributors in the UK. It’s not lost on us that this is a huge change for our distributors, which is why we’ve just launched a new website with one side for

the KBB market and another for the specifier market.” The new website offers a shopping cart style sample swatch system and already it’s coping with more than 1,000 sample requests every week - but Egger’s gone further: the Virtual Design Studio on the website has room sets and materials that can be embedded in your own website, making it easy for customers to choose the décor that best suits their needs, and the very latest app now offers a digital “swatch in your pocket”. Egger’s presentation of edgebanding materials has long emphasised that you don’t need to put a white edgeband with a white board and it’s invested heavily in recent times to prove the point. Product differentiation can be achieved through experimentation with different colours and the new website now makes this very easy. As well as a collection of matching edges, which includes gloss and supermatt, the new collection includes various end grain options that, thoughtfully, don’t require application of two different types of edgeband to the end and side of doors and visible panel edges. The new plywood-look is very on-trend and provides an opportunity for both product differentiation and contrast from just one edgeband. Also facilitating a higher value look, Egger has split its unicolour range into two parts: “Now we have unicolours and premium unicolours that give a higher value look,”

commented Nick. “It’s the same with the woodgrains - then, of course, we have materials like concrete.” Launching the new range at a special event in Hexham, Egger’s head of décor development, Elliott Fairlie, commented, “Not only is this our most comprehensive range ever, the new collection brings together all of the latest trends in furniture design and manufacture to provide co-ordination and choice never before seen in the KBB sector.” So, in a nutshell, what are the most prominent trends? “Mix and match has been a big thing,” commented Elliott. “We now expect this to grow out of solid unicolours and woodgrains to include contemporary and traditional, thick and thin surfaces, tough and delicate, metals and woods as well as designs that embody complexity and reduction. Black and white is evolving into a monochrome trend led by greys. Grey on grey is huge. The shift is towards cooler tones that combine better with woodgrains than in the past. Cashmere is still the number one but there is a discernible shift in the palette towards the new Pebble Grey. Pearl and dust greys are now being supplemented with Onyx Grey and Cosmos Grey, which works more subtly with whites than stark black. “We’re seeing an evolution of the white trend. There’s now a new white-grey. We’re also seeing combinations of gloss and matt

in the same colour - and accent colours, such as Nordic Blue and Fjord Green. Smoke Blue and Indigo in Structure Nine, with its silky matt texture, set the tone for the next three years. We also have a new Structure 12 for some of the lower price point woodgrains and Structure 38 for the premium finishes. Structure 38 will be stocked in black and white as well as synchronised woodgrains. “We’ve update some old classic oaks, getting rid of the orangey tones that were difficult to combine and replacing them with more natural greys that combine easily. White Gladstone blends very well with blues and there’s a new white version of Halifax Oak. Tobacco is another colour that doesn’t combine easily and is being replaced with décors like the walnut, Natural Carini, and a new décor based on Hickory. We’ve also brought out a new Beech, Natural Country Beech. Like the new linear Whitewood and Graphitewood, it goes perfectly with the new greys. There’s also a new Anthracite Mountain Larch that uses a double paper and has synchronised emboss and varnish. “We’re seeing metallics being used more in combination, especially in carcassing. Antique Brown Borneo with Structure 10 is ideal for elements and has a sprayed feel. Grey Linen is also an unusual replacement for white on carcases, especially when used with accent edgings.”

All cabinets are hand-painted in Bottle Rack Grey by Finnish paint company, Valtti. 01962 850 851 • www.searle-taylor.co.uk

“The Shaker design is making a big comeback, however this time around it’s all about bold lines and less fussy detailing. The design emphasis is pareddown with fewer frills. This works well with the new colour palette for the kitchen for a more sophisticated finish. Subtle painted finishes are ideal for timeless appeal in a luxury, classic scheme. The latest trends feature lighter neutrals, which complement solid wood and wood veneer perfectly.” Doug Haswell, Furniture Manager, Caple

“The range cooker market has seen positive growth in the last 12 months, +16% in volume and +11% in retail sales value according to MAT November 2015 – 2016. We expect this to continue as more and more home owners choose to refurb their kitchens, especially in the lead up to Spring, which is a key buying and planning period. Leisure is performing well and continuing to lead the 100cm market. However, the 90cm remains the most popular size of range cooker (+13.6% YoY), with Dual Fuel the preferred fuel type, although we recognise Induction is becoming more mainstream.” Gino Grossi, Leisure Brand Manager, Beko plc

ritish furniture manufacturer, Mark Taylor Design, is helping raise standards in the kitchen industry while supporting budding designers with the provision of a scholarship in conjunction with TKET* for a student on the Foundation Degree Course in Kitchen Design at Buckinghamshire New University. As well as co-sponsoring student Ben Paddon’s course fees, Mark Taylor Design has also employed him as a trainee designer at its Buckinghamshire HQ. Qualified engineer Ben, who already has a BA in Furniture Design and Craft, was able to join the second year of the three-year distance learning course in September due to his existing qualifications and experience. The industry-led course aims to enhance the skills and prospects of those working in the kitchen sector. As well as lectures using Skype, the work-related degree also includes three intensive residential workshops per year at the university’s Missenden Abbey Conference Centre, where industry experts share and discuss different projects to help students understand some of the changing

demands and challenges of kitchen design whilst teaching them how to approach design from a well rounded perspective, which can then be applied to kitchens. Mark Taylor says, “We’re delighted to be championing the kitchen industry’s quest to raise standards among the next generation of designers by working with Ben and supporting him through his degree.” Craig Matson, TKET chairman, adds, “Ben has a great background with the type of skills the kitchen industry requires. Helping put him through the course enables him to transition into his role at Mark Taylor Design and also gives him a solid foundation from which to build a career in the industry.” Ben, who will graduate in 2018 and will work for Mark Taylor Design as a qualified designer, adds, “I really enjoy creative problem solving and the course really encourages you to look further at ways in which design is constantly changing and evolving so that it works alongside the time we live in.” *The Kitchen Education Trust (TKET) is a registered charity that acts as an intermediary for the kitchen sector

“The built-in sector is showing the strongest growth across the whole of the market due to the big replacement market. In addition, with open-plan living continuing to grow in popularity, built-in cooking appliances are the obvious choice and fit with the minimalist look that goes hand-in-hand with it.” Michael Haigh, Head of Marketing, Britannia

hobs & hoods 16 • kitchen & bathroom journal february 2017 “Open plan living has had a long-lasting effect on the 1 way manufacturers design appliances. This is because most open plan layouts feature central islands or peninsulas that provide more overall work space than standard U-shaped options. Designers and retailers are no longer constrained by standard hob and hood sizes and have the freedom and flexibility to specify appliances that truly suit the needs of their customers. This has resulted in manufacturers developing more niche appliances, such as wider linear hobs for kitchens with peninsulas, and side-by-side domino hobs in all fuel types.” Kelly Penn, Marketing Manager, Hoover Candy, Baumatic 1. “One of the main issues with open-plan living is that the extraction rate needs to be powerful enough to provide the correct number of air changes for the size of the kitchen/living area. Similarly, the increases in power required for larger areas require advances in energy efficient technologies in order to ensure low running costs for the user. Whirlpool has developed smart cooker hoods that use exactly the right amount of power and energy required, meaning none is wasted.” Charles Bernstein, Category Manager, Built-in, Whirlpool

A WORLD WITH

NO LIMITS With Sintered Compact Surfaces fast becoming the industry standard, The Size continues to push the boundaries with state of the art facilities and custom design…

I

magine a world with no design limits. To be given complete control over the size, colour, design, texture and even the number of flecks you want in your work surface. This may sound like a designers dream but this is a reality, thanks to Spanish compact surface manufacture, The Size. Family run and owned by brothers Jesús Esteve and José Luis Esteve, the Esteve family has extensive experience in the natural stone industry. After inheriting a small marble business more than 40 years ago and turning it into a worldwide natural stone success story, the two brothers have since embarked on a new professional venture, as the new management of Neolith and The Size. Producing a material that is suitable for exterior and interior construction and that

has near-zero porosity, making the product hygienic, stain resistant, easy to clean and impervious to chemicals, is no mean feet, especially when it also boasts a resistance to wear, scratch, heat and UV too. But with near limitless possibilities, Neolith has made designs and architects sit up and take note. Created through Sinterisation technology - exposing minerals and other raw materials to extremely high pressure and temperatures over 1200 degrees Celsius - the product resembles the way natural stone forms over thousands of years in just hours, thanks to the company’s Castellón-based manufacturing facilities. Boasting three production lines, each line is assigned a special thickness. The latest production line – which was installed in September 2016 – sees the introducing of

The implementation of new lines since it began in 2009, has allowed for segmented specialisation of specific formats and thicknesses, helping to increase production efficiencies and reduce lead times. The detailed designs are a result of Neolith’s innovative Digital Design (NDD) decoration technique. This system has revolutionised Neolith patterns and is pushing the boundaries of what colours and textures are possible from compact surfaces. “The newly launched décors are a great example of this,” explains Mar Esteve, Marketing Director at Neolith. “By conducting primary research and collaborating with design houses around the world, we have pushed the boundaries of NDD to create five exceptional décors for the UK market. Inspired by the past and present, the new range is an amalgamation of architectural influence and natural stone from around the world. They possess the unpredictability, irregularity and prominence of natural stone, whilst boasting the practical benefits of a Sintered Compact Surface.” The Size also prides itself on its bespoke design offering and commercial project profile.

Neolith can be specified from as little as 3mm thick to 20mm. Pictured, Estatuario sink finish in 6mm and 12mm thickness. Leading the Design & Production Team, Carlos Garcia, Graphic Designer explains, “We have seen a huge increase in the popularity of raw materials imitating natural stone but why stop there? We’re constantly looking for new and different ways to create visually beautiful designs. In our showroom, we have a selection of metal effects, fabrics, leather and textile designs, as well as metallic glazes, fossil effects and wood. I dare anyone to tell them apart from the real thing. Neolith is so versatile and are technology is so advanced, the only limitation is your imagination.” Carlos adds, “To date, our most technically challenging project has been working off a water colour painting. The architect wanted the design to flow continuously over 650sqmt of floors, walls and table surfaces. The end result was truly breathtaking but 100% achievable.” With Sintered Compact Surfaces becoming an increasingly sought after product and design technology leading the way, The Size is optimistic for the future. Mar adds, “Last year ended on a very positive note, considerably better than expected, with double-digit growth rate in comparison to 2015. With the third production line now installed, we will be able to achieve an even faster growth rate in 2017 and continue to expand our facilities and product portfolio further still.”

OPEN-PLAN LIVING Multifunctional design that integrates into today’s apartment life…

apartment living kitchen & bathroom journal february 2017 • 21 “Multipurpose furniture is performing best right now for a kitchen that needs to entertain, offering endless storage combinations, looks and functions. With designs now able to provide hidden storage, conceal work and preparation areas, create additional seating and even an out-of-sight laundry room, it is clear to say kitchen storage has changed its role in the home. As such, the kitchen market now benefits from clever storage solutions that optimise space and allow consumers to neatly store kitchen essentials in concealed drawers. This is ideal for a limited kitchen space that needs to work all year by creating a kitchen where the ‘necessaries’ remain on-hand, yet out of sight.” Dieter Berends, Senior Designer, Urban Interior, London

3 “Islands in an apartment can be multipurpose from an important work-station to a place to relax with a morning coffee depending on how you configure them. The addition of an island or breakfast bar, doubled as an area used for extra storage as well as dining, can be the perfect way to add an iconic design element to your apartment kitchen. Curved units are also a smarter solution for kitchens that feature an island as no end panels are required because the doors can run the full 360 degrees. here’s not much point in making great products, then neglecting the packaging. Poor packaging leads to damage, disappointment, delay and dented reputations - not to mention unnecessary extra cost for the manufacturer - and getting it right really isn’t that difficult if you know who to talk to. NMC is a specialist in extruded polyethylene and alongside a range of products for protecting the edges of anything from baths to worktops, it also offers custommade products. “We were making pipe lagging in various dimensions that people were cutting and using to protect the edges of shower trays, worktops, furniture, etc.,” says NMC’s National Sales Manager, Jim Tait, recalling the company’s first experience of the

furniture and KBB sectors. “Then someone asked us if we could extrude a shape to fit the edges of a shower tray, a bath, or a piece of furniture. We produce moulds out of steel and we were already extruding U and C-shaped polyethylene, so it was no problem for us. Now we have a range consisting of nine product lines and multiple profiles in various densities ranging from a basic U-profile edge protector that fits 5-160mm worktops, glass and flat products, through to an L-section that’s used for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom cabinets. We also have a limited range of eight profiles for use as bumper pads to protect the arms and bases of furniture.” The big advantage of extruded polyethylene is that it can take multiple hits

Nomapack® includes nine product lines and multiple profiles in various densities ranging from a basic U-profile edge protector that fits 5-160mm worktops, glass and flat products, through to an L-section that’s used for kitchen, bathroom and bedroom cabinets. without losing its form or its effectiveness. “Polystyrene is prone to breakage and bubble wrap can burst on impact,” says Jim. “Corrugated products simply transfer the impact and will absorb moisture, just like cardboard. Our product is dust and water-resistant and it is chemically inert, so it will not damage or stain the surface. It is resistant to impacts, abrasion and scuffing, humidity, water and temperature fluctuations. In fact, it’s pretty much indestructible and can be used time and time again.” Cost-wise, NMC’s Nomapack® products are on a par with corrugated or polystyrene edge protectors and slightly ahead of bubble wrap. Aside from offering enhanced edge protection they’re also environmentally friendly. “Polyethylene can be recycled at

recycling sites. It carries a recycling logo that confirms it can be reused or recycled,” says Jim. “We reuse a lot of our own scrap in the manufacturing process. We also have a ‘nature foam’ product that’s made out of plant extract mixed with polyethylene that’s almost biodegradable.” The Nomapack® range offers edge protection profiles for every type of corner and the various profiles can be adapted to suit the shape of practically any product. But if you have a particular application that demands a custom-made profile, or you need a badged product in your corporate colours, all things are possible. “If you want a modified design, an increased thickness, or something unique, we can make bespoke profiles subject to the size you need and

the production run,” says Jim. “Our limit is 160mm across any dimension and we can offer any colour, even Pantones. We can print on profiles, so if you need a logo or a name, we can do that. We can supply products in any length you need from 100mm up to three metres. We would wind smaller profiles into coils ready for application during the manufacturing process. We can apply permanent or low tack adhesive to our profiles, we can add cuts, or emboss, whatever is required.” Turnaround time for a brand new product depends on how long it takes to get customer approval once the samples have been made but as a rough guide, you should allow 12 weeks from concept to delivery.

he introduction of James Latham’s Xylocleaf range of highly textured, premium Thermo Structured Surface (TSS) décors has gone to new heights with the imminent arrival of 20 new décors for 2017. Popular with architects and designers looking to mimic the depth and feel of natural materials without its impractical downfalls, XyloCleaf offers a variety of wood grains, linens and other unique materials that will stand up to the toughest challenges. Created and manufactured in Milan, it’s produced using a unique process of thermal fusing, which treats decorative papers with melamine resins under heat and pressure. The end result offers a strong, durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant décor, ideally suited to kitchen and bathroom surfaces and doors. As well as domestic applications, the XyloCleaf collection fits within premium design schemes in the hospitality sector and is ideal for furniture, fixtures and wall panelling. In addition, it is also proving to be popular with high-end retail, commercial and leisure specifications.

Paul Morson, James Latham’s Group Product Champion for Melamine says, ”XyloCleaf represents a new generation of panel products and one which offers extraordinary potential, delivering a complete solution of innovative products to suit all decorative tastes, trends and applications. It has quickly become a real success story for James Latham, our customers really love working with it and the end result is outstanding.“ As well as being available through James Latham’s nationwide network of depots for collection or delivery, Xylocleaf can now be seen at Latham’s new Product Specification Showroom in Islington, London. The new facility, which opened in September, has been created to inspire architects and designers, provide expert advice and enable them to keep abreast of the latest trends and developments in surface solutions and it is already proving to be a major hit, giving visitors the opportunity to see an even wider range of Latham’s comprehensive portfolio of products all under one roof.

stablished in 2006, Balmorals London is one of the UK’s leading independent ceramic supply companies. Originally a provider of OEM sanitaryware to both national and regional companies, the London-based company has changed direction in recent years, focusing its attentions on creating its very own innovative range of LABC approved Doc M packs, high rise WCs and accessories for the less able market. Most recently, the independent living specialist has extended its Minuto collection to include a raised height Comfort WC, Semi Recessed and 450mm cloakroom basins. “Typically, wall hung and back to wall have been viewed as more time-consuming to install, however newer easy to fit In-wall frames, including all the support mechanisms and cistern requirements, have removed a lot of the complexities of fitting wall hung pans.” Mike Smelt, Product Manager for Ceramics, Ideal Standard 1. Ideal Standard’s Concept Space range has been designed with a cistern that’s hidden behind the wall, giving the illusion of more space. A short projection – which is 6cm less than a standard WC - also allows it to be used in smaller spaces. “The sharpest growth we have seen has been from newer, larger sizes - 1400mm, 1600mm and 1700mm - which probably reflects both continued replacement of baths and the larger trays being used in conjunction with wetroom panels and walk-ins to simulate a wetroom environment.” David Osborne, Managing Director, Roman

A TOUCH OF LUXURY Look to Germany for luxury bathrooms…

T

he definition of luxury is those non-essential qualities. It’s those desirable items that add pleasure or comfort but are not absolutely necessary. The 2017 Pelipal collection makes the nonessential standard, so that every bathroom design becomes desirable. Pelipal bathrooms are manufactured in the latest finishes, to the highest standards and with the kind of innovative features that you would only expect to see with high price tags. Creating luxury with affordability is why German manufacturer Pelipal has achieved year on year success since being introduced to UK retailers in 2010. A commitment to the very highest standards in innovation, design and quality have seen the company positioned as one of the top five international bathroom manufacturers and the no1 position in Germany. Pelipal sees hi-spec contemporary design as the starting point, in turning the bathroom from a purely functional space into a luxurious sanctuary and in today’s busy world, this is precisely what customers are looking for.

Wayne Dance, Managing Director at InHouse, says that Pelipal’s phenomenal success is no surprise. “UK consumers have become very savvy and rightly so. High-end bathrooms with eye-watering price tags may look great in magazines but the design conscious consumer is becoming more price aware. What they want is luxury at a price they can afford. This is what Pelipal is all about”. Pelipal offers UK retailers complete flexibility in creating luxurious designs without compromise. Ranges are designed with respect to shape, material and colour. Providing luxury at every turn, Pelipal’s 2017 collection offers contoured or linear design, mineral marble, glass, ceramic and Krion washbasins. There are also numerous front options, from horizontal grain fronts to matt and high gloss to glass finishes. Further luxury is added with wall-hung designs and freestanding furniture. Added to this are those special luxurious touches of stunning LED mirrors and mirrored cabinets.

MARKET INSIGHT K&B Journal discusses the luxury bathroom market with Steve Kaye, Marketing Director at HiB Reports show the luxury bathroom market has remained strong over the last three years. Have you experienced similar findings and why do you think this is?

DallFlex shower channels award winning designs from Europe's acknowledged leaders

“The strength of the luxury bathroom market shows no signs of slowing down thanks to recent reports which predict the asking prices of houses in the UK will rise by 2% in 2017*. Pair this with the fact many homeowners want to spend more money improving their current homes, either to make them more comfortable for themselves or to improve its sale-ability, and you’ve got another strong year for bathrooms.”

How is the luxury bathroom market differentiating its products from the middle market? “When it comes to making a beautiful bathroom, the devil is in the detail. An innovative illuminated mirror or practical storage units with soft close function, can mean the difference between a bathroom which simply looks highend, to one that has it all – fashionable appeal with real functionality. “Technology is also playing an increasingly important role in the bathroom and a clear way to differentiate high-end bathrooms from mid-range ones. More products are expected to provide something above and beyond the norm and this is an area where mirrors and cabinets can really perform and become a ‘must have’ for retailers.”

How influential is the British design market when creating a luxury bathroom? “Some of the best designs and products for the luxury bathroom market come from the UK and it’s a market that HiB is incredibly proud to be part of. At HiB, our British in-house team, designs and innovates all of our products from our distribution centre. As a business founded on its design credentials, we continue to invest heavily in new product development to ensure we stay on the pulse of emerging new trends and technologies.” *www.theguardian.com
