Hi everyone, Happy St. Patrick's Day (especially if you're Irish)! St. Patrick was known as the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick's Day has been observed in the United States since early colonial times. The chief symbol associated with the day is the shamrock, a small plant whose leaves are divided into three lobes. According to legend, St. Patrick used the shamrock, which is now the national emblem of Ireland, to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people. Having the maiden name of Houlihan, I am of Irish descent myself. Yes, in my younger days I had that jet, bluish black hair. By this time this paper comes out, I will already have had my cataract surgery on one eye and then the other in two weeks. I understand there's nothing to it and you're in and out in minutes. I hope it's all factual. It's just as my old friends told me, “Oh Libby, it is just another sign of aging.” Of course, I said, “Oh thanks a lot.” Well my little Addie will start her softball games soon. They can't even start practice yet,

due to all of this rain. It can't be too much longer. I feel so bad complaining about the rain when I think of all the devastation in Japan. If there was ever a time to be on our knees in prayer, it's now. Every time the news comes on, it is so hard to sit and watch the coverage. The reality of these circumstances are so heartbreaking. Only decades of time and our loving Savior can heal these families. Maybe in time our government will direct us in some way that we as individual citizens may assist in this recovery. We never know today what tomorrow may bring. Salem Presbyterian Church Worship is at 11 a.m. each Sunday morning. Rev. Charles Todd is the minister. Everyone is always welcome. Everyone is invited to our Appalachia Mission Team Fundraiser this Sunday, March 20 after worship service. If you are interested in teaching or helping with vacation bible school from June 12-17 from 6-8:30 p.m. please let me know. Happy birthdays this week go to Jamison McIntyre, Jesse Simpson and Debbie Vick. Hope they are each the great-

Smyrna Baptist Church in Burlison will be celebrating its 200th anniversary next year. Plans are underway now for various events to be held in 2012, leading up to the finale at the homecoming/harvest dinner on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012. Members of the planning committee are seeking information pertaining to the history of Smyrna Baptist Church. They need vintage photos of the church or members from years past. If you have old photos that you can loan to be scanned, please contact the church. The originals will be returned to you. The church is also seeking historical information or items that you'd be interested in loaning for use at the events. Photos and information need not be 200 years old to be of historical value. If you can help in any way, please call the church at 476-6178 or e-mail smyrnabc@bellsouth.net. Garland United Methodist Church will be holding revival on March 20-22. Jackie Fincher will be the guest speaker and there will be special singing each night. On Sunday night the 20th, the Finchers will be doing the praise singing, a special singing guest on Monday night (not yet listed) and New Sprit will host the singing on Tuesday night the 22nd. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. On March 11, a 9.0 earthquake (recently upgraded from 8.9) hit off the coast of Japan. At the writing of this article they are still finding bodies and are worried about their nuclear plants. Japan has been hit so hard with these natural disasters that it will be years before they recover and even then the

country may never be the same. Let's all join together to keep this country and all those affected in our prayers. I can’t help but wonder if there’s a connection between the Japan earthquake and all the earthquakes in Arkansas as of late. If you relieve pressure in one spot might it cause pressure to be released somewhere else. There have been more than 800 quakes reported in Arkansas in the past six months, including a 4.7 which is the largest to hit the state in 35 years. Some people think that all these quakes are very possibly an after effect of natural-gas drilling. The gas companies are doing something called “fracking” (hydraulic fracturing) which is injecting water into the ground at high pressure to fracture the rock and release the gas that’s trapped within it. Salt water is a common by-product of the fracking process and the simplest solution is to inject the toxic wastewater back into the ground. Some scientists warn that the wastewater lubricating the surrounding rock could possibly lead to earthquakes or maybe it’s the “fracking” process itself. While debates continue, Arkansas has imposed an emergency suspension on the drilling of new injection wells. However, wells that were active before the suspension can remain in operation. I don’t know about you but I think maybe they should rethink this thing and stop injecting all the wells until they figure out the cause of the earthquakes or if it is just our planet's natural processes. I hope you have a wonderful week and thank you for reading. If you have any information for future articles please call me at 476-2683 or e-mail me at kellumeddie@yahoo.com.

ister, as she is hospitalized with pneumonia in Benton, Ky. Our fellowship group will meet this Saturday night in the home of Frank and Marlene Brown at 6 p.m. Happy birthdays this week go out to Makayla Bishop and Alexis Matlock. I hope they are both the greatest! We are so blessed by our brother, Tim Gatlin, in his decision to accept Christ as his Savior and put Him on in Baptism. We extend our sympathy to the Shankle family in the death of Mildred Lucille Kindrick, mother of Faye Shankle, grandmother of Richard Shankle and to Lee Graham in the death of his aunt, Della Cole. Della was also the mother of our former minister here at Covington, brother Leon Cole. In closing, getting all the clocks turned forward for our day light savings time to begin was quite a job. I still saw two more I had forgotten the first part of the week. I think we have them all now. Once we recover from the lost hour of sleep maybe we will begin to enjoy the real spring when it arrives. Have a great week everyone.

Rufus is a darling 7 month-old puppy who has been bounced around a lot... His original owner abandoned him at a local shelter when he was just a few months old, then after about 2 months of staying at the shelter, a very nice family adopted him. Unfortunately for him, they had a sudden family emergency and could not keep him after one day. Dogs 2nd Chance took him in and we are hoping to find him a permanent place to call home. Rufus is a well-behaved and laid back dog. He is very smart and trainable. He also plays Rufus well with other dogs.Rufus is in good health (although a bit little underweight), is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. He is available for adoption to a good home. If you believe you can give this darling a permanent loving home, please complete an application on the internet at:http://www.dogs2ndchance.org/adoption-application Application and adoption fees apply.
