From the Headmaster's Desk Dear Alumni and Friends, As you page through this issue of The Leader, I hope you take to heart just how much we appreciate our benefactors and how irreplaceable each one of our supporters is to Covington Latin School. The names of our contributors listed in this edition are more than printed pages; they represent a deep commitment from our school community to our continued mission. We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to the 2012-2013 Academic Advancement Fund (AAF). This annual campaign funds our tuition assistance program and is absolutely essential to the operation of the school. Nearly 30% of our current families depend on our tuition assistance program in order to send their children to Latin School. As the school grows, our development efforts must also keep pace and I am happy to report that as of this writing, the 2013-2014 AAF campaign has already surpassed last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s total. Thank you again to everyone who has continued to support this vital appeal. In this issue, we have also published a summary of completed building campaign pledges in recognition and appreciation of our donors. Our beautiful new facility was made possible by each one of our building fund contributors, and we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude. During our Open House this year, prospective students and families witnessed the excellence firsthand through experiments demonstrated in the new science labs, refreshments served in the Board Room and in students who proudly gave tours of the place they so often call their second home. It is truly a privilege for all of us. In the interest of financial transparency, we have published a summary of the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Our financial situation remains strong, as evidenced by the fiscal year ending comfortably in the positive column even as we began to service the building debt. However, we still have many challenges ahead of us. As you may know, we currently have $6 million of building debt that is amortized over twenty years. But, it is our hope to pay the loan down in ten years in an effort to minimize accrued interest. This will require a combination of enrollment growth and expanded fundraising which is attainable through your continued partnership. This is an exciting time in the life of Latin School. We thank God for all of His blessings and pray that He will continue to lead Covington Latin in its mission of preparing future Leaders with Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. THE LATIN SCHOOL What’s the one thing you walked away from CLS having mastered? It may not have been a perfect translation of the Aeneid or an understanding of the phenomenon of sonoluminescence. Rather, one answer that resonates with alumni and current students alike is the transformative experience of Covington Latin that lasts a lifetime.

CATIE DUCHETTE ‘14

Senior Catie Duchette’s experiences in the classroom have intrinsically shaped her future. Duchette has seen her study habits improve, and is fully confident to face the challenges in the next step of her education. Indeed, her confidence is reflected in the way she writes – with a quiet authority. Duchette’s pages may curl from time to time due to the heavy pressing of her pen, but that is only a tangible reflection of her inner determination. Her path may lead her to a career in osteopathic medicine, but she’s exploring her options. Her one word to describe CLS? “Charismatic. There are so many different people; you can just look around for five minutes and see so many different things going on and interests that students have,” she related. When asked about what she was looking forward to the most, her answer was unambiguous. “Coming back to Covington Latin as an alum. I’ll get to see it from a different perspective. I’m so anxious to move on to the next phase of my life but I also know that in a year, I will be missing these halls,” she said. For Duchette, having access to the talented faculty has been another perk. Self-described as not very good at math, after taking a class with Mrs. Linda McDaniel things began to click, and now Duchette is enrolled in AP Calculus. “It was really rewarding to push through and now I feel like my skills have improved so much,” she said.

Junior, Jason Grout, son of Chris Grout ‘79, also knows that keeping up with his schedule and finding a balance is key. When asked the question that virtually every college application asks – what sets you apart? Grout mulls it over. “I can never figure out a good answer to that one,” he said with a laugh. His unassuming demeanor serves him well as he goes about his soccer and tennis practice, yearbook editor duties, and president of the pro-life club responsibilities, just to name a few of his extracurricular activities.

Grout feels that CLS goes with him everywhere from community and social aspects to his academic work ethic. He credits the small school atmosphere in helping him realize his potential and opportunities to try different things that he may not have done elsewhere. Being an upperclassman this year has also given him perspective that his time at Latin School no longer feels infinite. It’s a feeling that is both exciting and daunting. As Duchette and Grout prepare to graduate, they not only look back on the legacy they are leaving behind, but look ahead to becoming part of the greater legacy of Latin School alumni; one of not only academic excellence, but of service to and leadership in the community. Like many before them, their experiences and time at CLS have prepared them well to excel in their future endeavors.

ROB SCHAEFER ’81 Special Forces officer (Green Beret) with over 27 years experience working with foreign defense and military officials, experienced the 2014 Sochi Olympics firsthand as an NBC correspondent and on-air security analyst for the network. Author of "The Insurgency in Chechnya and the North Caucasus, From Gazavat to Jihad," Schaefer was able to bring some of the action to the classroom at his alma mater. Skyping with current students, his advice about life after Covington Latin School? Pay attention in Latin class! His foreign affairs have benefited from learning the structure of the ancient language (as well as helping him become fluent in Russian). Students had the opportunity to ask questions - ranging from a college path to the most famous person Schaefer has encountered - and see the CLS mission of leadership being carried out.

DAVID PFAEHLER ‘02 + ANNA GIER PFAEHLER ‘02 celebrated the birth of their daughter, Brett Annamarie, on July 24. David and Anna currently live in Hartsdale, New York. David is a gemstone buyer and gemologist with Harry Winston. Anna is a Certified Financial Planner with Palisades Hudson Financial Group LLC where she is a Client Service Manager and Chief Compliance Officer.

NELL SCHAFFER ’03 is engaged to Mark Bosse. The couple plans to marry at the Cathedral Basilica in July of this year Nell is currently Choral Director at Notre Dame Academy and runs her own piano studio. Mark is a Data Analyst for Aunt Millie's Bread Company.

John Anneken ‘75

John Anneken ’75, Chair of the 2013-2014 Academic Advancement Fund, has been a lifelong resident of the Northern Kentucky area and an irreplaceable part of the Covington Latin community. Growing up, John recalled a knock on the door one Sunday evening in January of 1971. “Fr. Ed Heile showed up at my house to ask me to consider Covington Latin,” Anneken said. Although he didn’t think so then, John now knows it wasn’t a chance encounter. Failing his first Latin test didn’t deter him from the years of hard work that he would put in to become a proud graduate. This spring his son, Tyler ‘14, will also join the alumni ranks. For Anneken, Covington Latin has shaped so much of his life. And it’s the reason why he continues to give back. The question he poses so often – “can you say you would be where you are now without Latin School?" - is one that he answers with a resounding "no." “The foundation of my life passions, visions and faith were solidified during my education at CLS,” said Anneken. As this year’s AAF Chair, Anneken has witnessed firsthand the generosity of our alumni, family and friends. You may have even gotten a call from him at some point during the appeal! Although he jokes that people are going to stop answering his calls, Anneken’s commitment to Covington Latin shines through in each and every conversation. The AAF was introduced by Fr. Heile - the same Fr. Heile that had come knocking that Sunday evening at Anneken’s residence and carries forth the time-honored tradition of making the Latin School experience a reality for all students of exceptional ability and promise, regardless of their economic circumstances. “It is time to give back. Our alumni base is a small fraction compared to most any other school; with this honor comes a great responsibility to invest in the preservation of our Covington Latin School. At various times we can contribute various amounts, but the dollars we contribute here mean so much more considering the small alumni base,” Anneken said. Through his help along with our captains, this year’s AAF has already surpassed $200,000 in pledges. We thank those who have donated so generously and we encourage those who have not yet pledged to please prayerfully consider stepping up in support of the this special place and Fr. Heile’s vision.

CLS: For you, what has the discernment process entailed?

RODGERS: When I became serious about discerning the priesthood, I began to attend daily Mass, strengthened my habits of prayer, and found a spiritual director. I first spoke to Fr. Bach with the local diocese, but I also thought about joining the Dominicans and gave a lot of thought to joining the Jesuits. I spent a weekend in Chicago visiting Jesuits for a vocations experience, and was working on my application for the novitiate when I decided instead to go to Rome to see the election of Pope Francis. That delayed my entrance by a year, and in the meantime, I changed my mind and submitted my application for the Diocese of Covington. My discernment process is not over now; Fr. Bach has been telling me for years that the best place to discern is in the seminary. I look forward to being able to devote myself to prayer and study to continue discerning how God is calling me.

CLS: How did your time at CLS shape your spirituality?

Sam Rodgers ’08 had not seriously considered a life of service to God during his time at Latin School but a firm foundation had been laid. The small moments of everyday life can be lost in the day’s turbulence, but these same moments can be seen as opportunities for mindfulness in our choices. For it is our choices that determine our path, and we are called to choose the higher one.

RODGERS: No, I did not. Plenty of people suggested it to me, but I thought I would become an epidemiologist (doctor). I didn't seriously consider it until college.

RODGERS: I am grateful that God gave me the opportunity to be a Pontifical Server, which was a great opportunity to work with priests in their essential task: praying the Mass. Latin School is blessed to be able to give students that opportunity. I can also credit weekly Mass, great religion teachers, and thoughtful retreats. CLS: What did you enjoy most about your time at Latin School?

RODGERS: I loved my years at Latin School. I had excellent teachers, and I enjoyed the camaraderie of the small classes. I participated in Student Council, Cross Country and was a Pontifical Server. My favorite memories are from the Junior Classical League (JCL) conventions and, well, from goofing off in the senior lounge. CLS: Advice to other young people who may feel a calling to religious life? RODGERS: My advice is "fear not!" If you are interested in the priesthood, if people ask you if you have considered the priesthood, if a life of service to God and your fellow man seems attractive, then pray about it and talk to somebody about it. Do not wait for God to send a pillar of fire; He speaks more subtly. I think for a while I was waiting for a sign, but that's not how God usually works. This same advice would hold, of course, for a call to religious brotherhood or sisterhood. In fact, this same advice (pray, go to mass, discuss, be courageous) is good advice for anyone. Your first vocation is to be a good Christian. In pursuit of that, the details will become clear. 18
