CL Editor’s letter

2013

Spring is upon us...

W

elcome to the March issue of Covered Local.

March brings with it the start of Spring. Although as I sit here writing, it is hard to believe as it is freezing outside and starting to snow again! Lets hope March brings with it warmer, lighter days and those ever so rare blue skies. March is also a great time for Mums. With Mothering Sunday on the 10th, they are sure to receive some great gifts and hand made surprises from their little ones! The Coulsdon Master Plan details have now been released on the Council website. Take a look at our local news pages to see where you can view the proposed plans and also for the dates of the public consultation. If you have any concerns or comments then pop along to one of these days to put across your point of view. On the 1st March our NEW Local Directory will launch. www.coveredlocaldirectory.co.uk. You will be able to find local trades, events, clubs and local organisations here. The directory gives the advertiser the opportunity to showcase their work or latest adverts along with a comments book for customers to leave feedback. Our directory can be accessed via a PC, Ipad or Smartphone.

Wining photo by Martin Miles

Our capture winter competition closed in February, with the photo by Martin Miles taking first place. Unfortunately, we have had to postpone Martins photo’s appearance on our front cover as the image was not suitable for print. We have agreed with Martin to publish one of his other photos on a future edition cover.

Martin will also enjoy a night out for a meal and wine at Goz Meze Restaurant in Coulsdon. We would like to thank Goz for their sponsership of this competition. This month our Captain Ted competition not only has you winning your very own Captain Ted but we are also giving away a Body Shop hamper worth £50. Have a look on page 72 to see if you can guess where he is. This month Ted was helped on his travels by local history man Martin Miles. Don’t forget Ted has his own Facebook page now. Follow us on Facebook for more details: coveredlocalCR5 Our winner of last months Captain Ted competition, was Kim Mcinally and her daughter Gemma from Old Coulsdon. Who won her very own Captain Ted and £100 Body shop Hamper. Our “Business Of The Month” winner, Design by Thairs received a FREE half page advert which can be found on page 59. To enter this month, all you have to do is email us your details and we will enter you into the draw. We have had another great month taking on new advertisers from in and around the CR5 area. If you are contacting any of our advertisers, please mention where you saw their advert, as it helps us to continue to bring you Covered Local every month. As like every month, we need your support to let us know about any upcoming events. We can then have them listed within our diary section, which will encourage more people to attend. We hope that you all have an amazing March and that you enjoy what we have put together for you!

Views To be Sought On Draft Coulsdon Masterplan

Calling all Entrepreneurs

and Start-Up Companies.

“We want people to give us their views on the proposals to make Coulsdon a place that has a vibrant town centre for the local people, while enhancing its distinctive features and character, particularly where the Green Belt meets outer London.” Image courtesy of HTA architects.

The Pop-up space at Art Rebellion will be opening its doors this April to invite creative people the chance to showcase their business ideas on flexible rental terms, ranging from two weeks to two months. The loft space at AR is a bright and spacious studio carefully divided into open-plan rooms to give the feel of an indoor market that benefits from direct access from our busy gallery and coffee lounge. If you want to test your business without the restraints of a long-term lease then call us today to discuss availability and ideas.

Councillor Jason Perry, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and transport, said: “This vision for Coulsdon is realistic, deliverable and exciting. It will boost the economic growth of the town centre by bringing much needed jobs, homes and a mix of retail, leisure and community facilities. It has a holistic approach to confirm Coulsdon’s future as a great place to live, work and socialise.

CL Oasis Academy

HOW OASIS ACADEMY COULSDON IS

TRANSFORMING EDUCATION “Oasis Academy Coulsdon has already transformed the lives of so many students. Celebrating every individual’s achievements and motivating them to succeed further in life.”

Y

ear 12 students, Ashvin Jalabhay, Sophie Hack, Ryan Bridger and Ryan Judge are delighted with the news that their Academy has been named as joint most improved Croydon school/Academy this year with Thomas More. They present their views on life at the Academy and interview the Principal, David Millar:

“Oasis Academy Coulsdon is more than just a place of secondary education; it provides comfort, security and a sense of hope in all students. It is a place where unity happens, a place where learning can transform the lives of students and a place where prejudice and judgement is not tolerated.” Said Sophie. David Millar explained: “When we began four and a half years ago, we had a vision and made promises at our open evenings and talks to prospective parents. Year on year we have been improving what we do and working tirelessly to bring about the achievement and transformation we are committed to, whilst creating a Family ethos, that is truly inclusive and values every person.” “The League tables this year put us in a strong and favourable position compared to other local Croydon and Surrey schools. Our results are better than many others who have traditionally out-performed us and Coulsdon High School before us. However, this is only important to me in that it demonstrates that we are delivering more than ever on our promises and our vision. I want every school to be Outstanding, and for every child to receive an outstanding education. Also, while we broke all records last summer, we are not content, and continue to give whatever it takes to ensure this Year 11 cohort and all other years achieve their potential and enjoy a ‘life of limitless potential’. Said David Millar

What do the students think?

Ashvin said: “There were mixed reviews when students heard that Oasis Academy Coulsdon was taking over, but we all knew it was for the better. We soon began to see many positive changes: pride in the Academy was restored, high expectations of students were set, teaching and learning techniques improved greatly and most importantly, it brought the whole Academy together, creating a sense of belonging and harmony. “The outside community were deeply impressed by the way students presented themselves in public and this was another significant factor about the Academy as not only did it bring the whole learning community together, it also earned the respect and dignity from the local residents and shopkeepers by the way students conducted themselves outside of the Academy.” Ryan Bridger went on to explain: “The relationships between the staff and students of the Academy has improved extensively as students are able to trust staff more often and we are always encouraged to be the best that we can be! Lastly, the incredible and mesmerizing £18.7m new build was truly a blessing for all students and having this beautiful learning environment, it made us all extremely grateful for what we have and gave us all a huge amount of inspiration to do well and make our Academy proud!”

CL Britain’s Got Talent

Excited to be back with simon? VERY EXCITED. WE’VE HAD TWO DAYS APART – BUT WE’VE BEEN SKYPE-ING.

‘Britain’s Got Talent’ judge David Walliams on why he finds it hard to say ‘no’ to hopefuls on the show. He also talks about his excitement about being back working with Simon Cowell, what the banter has been like on the panel and what it takes to win BGT. BY VICKY DEARDEN

‘Britain’s Got Talent’ auditions for 2013 are underway! Judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden braved the snow to see hopefuls perform at the famous London Palladium in the West End. ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ hosts Ant and Dec were also in the capital for the filming of the auditions plus ‘Britain’s Got More Talent’ presenter Stephen Mulhern. After the success of last year’s show - which beat new BBC rival show ‘The Voice UK’ in the ratings - boss Simon Cowell had no hesitation in bringing back the same judging panel for 2013. Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon were looking stunning on the red carpet outside the Palladium Amanda in a black cut-out dress and Alesha in a white suit with plunging neckline. David and Simon wrapped up in somewhat warmer attire for the event sporting overcoats, scarves and gloves. While Ant and Dec looked the most sensibly dressed for the occasion in jeans and warm jackets. SO WE’RE AT THE LONDON AUDITIONS AT THE PALLADIUM – ARE YOU EXCITED?

DAVID: Yes. I can’t wait to get started! EXCITED TO BE BACK WITH SIMON? DAVID: Very excited. We’ve had two days apart – but we’ve been Skype-ing. [laughs] SO HOW ARE THINGS BETWEEN YOU AND SIMON THIS SERIES? DAVID: Very good. We’ve only had two days together but there’s been a lot of fun banter. The good thing about Simon is he’ll really react to things and you’ll go along with him so he’s a great person to improvise with. WHAT ARE THE BEST AND WORST THINGS ABOUT WORKING WITH SIMON COWELL? DAVID: Well it’s all good. He’s a lot of fun, he’s a very funny man and he’s great to spend time with. The only thing is he can sometimes be quite late. That’s the only bad thing but when he does come, he’s always great fun. APPARENTLY THIS IS SIMON’S MEANEST YEAR YET SO FAR IN THE AUDITIONS? DAVID: I don’t think so at all. He’s been in a great mood. He’s been a lot of fun. >>

coveredlocaldirectory.co.uk | MARCH 2013

19

CL Britains’s Got Talent I don’t see that. He is like the head judge so everyone is interested in how he is thinking. AND WE’VE HEARD YOU’VE BEEN BICKERING AGAIN? DAVID: Yes because we don’t necessarily like the same things and so we argue amongst ourselves. All the judging panel will argue and that’s what makes it interesting. It’s just banter on the show. IS SIMON’S BANTER QUITE GOOD? DAVID: He’s a very funny man and he’s great to spend time with yeah. AND DOES HE CHALLENGE YOU WHEN YOU SAY SOMETHING? DAVID: We challenge each other all the time. I mean it’s not interesting if all the judges agree with each other all the time because otherwise we might as well just have one judge. So we’ve all got different things that we like and dislike – and he’s obviously looking for certain things. He’s looking for something that he can take around the

Yep it’s great, you never know, you always think somebody is going to be taken out and shot [laughs] but it hasn’t happened.

world like he has with some of the other acts. WHAT IS THE WAY TO SIMON COWELL’S HEART? DAVID: What is the way to Simon Cowell’s heart? I’ve absolutely no idea. IS IT HOME-BAKED COOKIES? DAVID: I don’t know. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE TO CONTESTANTS TO REALLY WOW? DAVID: What’s my advice to contestants to wow the judges? YEAH. DAVID: I think originality is the most important thing because there’s plenty of people who can sing and dance but putting something together in a completely original way – that’s what really impresses us. THE PERFORMERS LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU EMPATHISE WITH THEM – IS IT STILL DIFFICULT TO SAY NO? DAVID: I do find it hard yeah, because if you’ve been an actor and you’ve auditioned for things and people have turned you down then you know that feeling. Simon’s never been turned down by anyone so he doesn’t know what that’s like. But you have to be

honest as well because it’s like feeding a stray dog – if someone hasn’t really got what it takes, you want to let them down gently. ARE YOU ITCHING TO GET ON STAGE AGAIN LIKE LAST YEAR? DAVID: Well that just happened spontaneously on day one with The Show Bears in Blackpool. And I hadn’t planned it or anything and on this show you can’t contrive anything, you can’t plan anything. Erm if it happens naturally... it’s hard, it’s a weird show because you can’t prepare at all because we really have no idea who is coming out. Simon has no idea, none of us do – nothing is scripted, nothing’s planned. So if it happened organically – yes. AFTER PUDSEY LAST YEAR – WHAT CAN TOP THAT THIS YEAR? DAVID: Yes it was an amazing year because we had an act that won the show that couldn’t have won any other show really because it was a proper variety act. So I would love to see something that we’ve never seen before win and originality is always the key. But who knows? We might see a great singer, we might see a great dance act – we saw a great ventriloquist act in Cardiff who was fantastic so who knows? AND ARE YOU LOVING THAT ALL FOUR OF YOU ARE BACK THIS YEAR?

Featureflash / Shutterstock.com

DAVID: Yep it’s great, you never know, you always think somebody is going to be taken out and shot [laughs] but it hasn’t happened.

20

ANT AND DEC SAY IT’S GOING TO BE YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE TORMENTING SIMON ON STAGE AND OFF STAGE? DAVID: Well there we are! We’ll see if you find my body at the bottom of a lake you’ll know who’s responsible. >>

CL Britain’s Got Talent

WAS IT AN EASY DECISION TO COME BACK FOR ANOTHER SERIES? DAVID: Yes it was because I really enjoyed it, it was fun and people see a different side of you in a show like this especially if you’ve been acting and they’ve seen you in character and now they can see the real you – sort of [laughs]. SO YOU’RE EXCITED TO BE BACK? DAVID: Yes I am. I’m very excited because this show, you do have six months away from it, because we finished in May – so I was actually kind of itching to get back to it and the excitement and the fun of it. It’s not like any other job you do. DO YOU THINK CONTESTANTS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM WEARING LEOTARDS AFTER THE AGE OF 60? DAVID: No, I think that should be encouraged. AN ANIMAL ACT WON IT LAST YEAR, WHAT SORT OF ACT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE WIN THIS YEAR? DAVID: Well I don’t mind, I mean just the most talented person should win. I really don’t mind what kind of act it is. It’s sometimes more interesting if it’s not a singer because there are other shows that find singers, but there have been the more unusual kind of singer like the ones we’ve found before like Paul Potts or Susan Boyle. I don’t really have any pre-conceptions. That’s the great thing about this show. We really don’t know who is coming on, we really don’t know what we’re going to see. And who would have thought a teenage girl and a dancing dog was going to capture the nation’s heart. SIMON HAS SAID YOU MIGHT HAVE ALREADY FOUND A WINNER AT THE FIRST AUDITIONS?

22

coveredlocal.co.uk | MARCH 2013

DAVID: Well, we were in Cardiff for a couple of days and we did see some very talented people and one in particular. He was great. But now that guy has set the standard. But it’s still early days on the show. ARE YOU STILL HAPPY TO BE ON THE PANEL? DAVID: Yeah it’s great, it’s great fun. It’s something that you can’t script or anything like that. It’s completely out there. You don’t know what’s going to happen at all. SO YOU WERE HAPPY TO BE INVITED BACK FOR ANOTHER SERIES? DAVID: [laughs] Yes I was, because if you’re not invited back it’s like, ‘You weren’t good the first time.’ So yeah I’m delighted. WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO SEE IN THE AUDITIONS THIS YEAR? DAVID: Something we’ve never seen before, I think that’s the thing, especially when the show’s been running a few years. You think, ‘Well that was good but it’s a bit like this or...’ We see a lot of street dance groups and there’s a lot of great street dance groups out there but unless they are better than Diversity they are probably not going to win. ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE YOUR JUDGING PERSONA AT ALL THIS YEAR? DAVID: No, you just have to be yourself. FINALLY, COULD YOU STILL DO THE SHOW WITHOUT SIMON, WOULD IT STILL BE AS FUN? DAVID: Well probably not for me because I have so much kind of banter with him so I don’t know, we’ll see but anyway, he’s not likely to leave so it’s fine we don’t need to worry about it! Anyway, Simon will be here himself in about seven or eight hours...

CL Nick Coysh - Osteopath

Oust Your Aches With Osteopathy

T About Nick Nicks interest in osteopathy stemmed from his godfather, who treated his family in his earlier years and from whom he experienced the effectiveness of such treatment. He took a degree course at the Surrey Institute of Osteopathic Medicine, a very intense and thorough grounding in all aspects of the human anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology and pharmacology to name but a few. Nick is committed to keeping abreast of the latest advances in health research to offer the best possible treatments and is also flexible in his working hours. He recently become one of only eleven certified and licensed practitioners of the Niel-Asher Technique in Surrey for the treatment of frozen shoulder, a technique which has been scientifically trialled and has proven to be extremely effective. Treatments are carried out at Serendipity Health & Beauty along the parade of shops leading up to Chipstead station and early morning or late evening appointments or home visits within a five mile radius of Chipstead are all possible. Having been actively involved in sport all his life, Nick has a particular understanding of related injuries. As a previous football club sponsor, he has treated some of their players and also has patients from rugby, bowls, golf, martial arts clubs and more.

26

here cannot be many of us who have not, at one time or another, suffered from back, neck, muscle or joint pain. This could be either as a result of a sports or work-related injury, due to poor posture or simply the effects of ageing. Nicholas Coysh is an osteopath with a gentle approach to treatment by keeping his patients fully informed as to the nature of the problem, what he proposes to do and the long term aims towards recovery. He believes that a relaxed and trusting patient will benefit more from the therapy. As each patient’s body is individual, the procedure is unique in every case with attention also given to self-help by way of post treatment exercises and postural advice.

What Is Osteopathy For those who aren’t aware, osteopathy is a holistic hands-on manual therapy which helps the body to be more able to heal itself, restoring its balance without the use of drugs or surgery where possible. It is a system of diagnosis and treatment of a huge array of disorders and conditions based upon the fundamental principles created by the founder of osteopathy Dr. Andrew Taylor Still.

What Osteopaths Do Osteopaths use gentle techniques that work with the body to create the best conditions for repair and healing. Much like a well oiled machine, when the body is structurally balanced and efficient it will function with the minimum of wear and tear, leaving more energy for living. The focus of treatment is not just to target the symptoms alone but to treat the parts of the body that have caused the symptoms. Some of the techniques used may be soft tissue release similar to massage, rhythmic movements of the joints to increase the range and quality of movement as well as joint manipulation where necessary. An osteopath must study their undergraduate degree for a minimum of four years to qualify. This is similar to a medical degree, with more emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal treatments including over a thousand hours of osteopathic technique training.

OFFER Being based in the leafy Chipstead area, he expects to encounter patients from a wide range of backgrounds and occupations such as riders, walkers, gardeners, office based clerks and commuters. All can expect a high level of care from a dedicated professional. Mention Covered Local to get a £10 discount off your first treatment or when recommending a new patient. CL Motor Review

New VW Golf

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - www.carwriteups.co.uk

The fresh Golf, which went on sale in the UK in January is undoubtedly one of the safest cars of it size around. All of the latest models come with seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, five three-point seatbelts, braking and stability aids, electronic differential lock and Isofix preparation for two rear child seats.

I

can never get enough of the VW Golf. It’s just such a rewarding motor to drive.

Unsurprisingly, the 2013 VW Golf has received a top five star rating from the European consumer protection organisation Euro NCAP. It also won the award for innovations in the area of integral safety at the highly esteemed Euro NCAP Advanced Awards. Along with Lane Assist and Front Assist, proactive occupant protection and the standard multiple impact brake activation system were recognised as pioneering safety innovations. This is confirmation of the excellent competitive position of the Golf in its class. But what’s the eagerly awaited Golf like? Well, as you’ve read, it’s safer, but also lighter, more advanced, more spacious, more efficient and better equipped than before. The VW also offers improved value, with UK prices starting at just £16,330 – that’s lower than those of its predecessor. Behind the wheel, it’s difficult to fault the precise nature of the Golf ’s drive. Steering is ultra-direct, cornering is superb and ride comfort sublime. It’s spacious enough for a small family and a total blast to drive on your own. The VW, in any guise, makes a superb commuting tool and in the week I drove it, it made light work of my daily A14 commute from Newmarket to the Midlands. The Golf is available in the UK in three trim levels: S, SE and GT (the GTI and BlueMotion models will join the line-up later in the year). Four petrol engines and two diesel engines are available to order.

32

coveredlocal.co.uk | MARCH 2013

Standard specification levels build on those of the outgoing Golf, bringing new items of luxury and technology to the class. The entry-level Composition Media system includes a 5.8-inch colour touchscreen, DAB digital radio, a CD player, MDI interface (for connecting iPod or MP3 player), Bluetooth telephone preparation and audio streaming and eight speakers. Also standard is ‘Climatic’ semi-automatic air conditioning, among a host of other features. If the high levels of kit you’ll find in the new Golf still don’t quite ‘float your boat’, there’s a multitude of optional equipment available. This includes high beam assist, lane assist, park assist (which is able to parallel-park the Golf in spaces only 80 cm longer than the car itself in addition to providing automatic end-on parking), adaptive chassis control and a rear-view camera. You can also select from a choice of alternative alloy wheels up to 18 inches in diameter, bi-xenon headlights, ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery, 2Zone climate control, the Discover Pro navigation system with 8-inch colour touchscreen, keyless entry and a panoramic sunroof, among other options. So, is the 2013 Golf worth buying or choosing as the next company car? Absolutely! The only thing that’s let the VW Golf down in the past is its ubiquity. But there’s a reason for it – Golf ’s are just so blooming good that everyone, at some stage in their lives, wants one.

CL Recipes by Waitrose Easter Bunny Biscuits with Currants and Mixed Spice

Children’s Preparation time : 20 minutes Cooking time : 15 minutes Total time : 35 minutes • • • • • • • • • • • •

Makes: 20 to 25 Ingredients 125g softened butter 75g caster sugar, plus 1-2 tbsp for sprinkling 1 egg, separated 200g plain flour, sifted ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp mixed spice Zest of 1 lemon 75g currants 2 tbsp milk

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together, using a wooden spoon or electric hand whisk, until pale and fluffy. 2. Beat in the egg yolk, reserving the white. Then, using a round-bladed knife, gently stir in the sifted flour, spices, lemon zest and currants. Gradually stir in the milk until the dough starts to come together – you may need slightly less, or a little more, milk. 3. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured worktop and knead gently until smooth. Roll out to about 5mm thick then cut out the biscuits using a rabbit-shaped cutter, a 7.5cm round cutter, or shape of your choice. 4. Place the biscuits on 2-3 greased baking trays and bake for 10 minutes. 5. Remove from the oven. Whisk the reserved egg white very slightly, brush lightly over the biscuits then sprinkle with sugar. Return to the oven for a further 5 minutes, until just golden. Remove and place on a cooling rack. Cook’s tips The biscuits can be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Freshen homemade biscuits, by placing them in a warm oven for 3-4 minutes.

Mini Melon Medley with Prawns in a Ginger Dressing Preparation time : 15 minutes Total time : 15 minutes Serves: 6 • • • • • •

3 Galia mini melons 1 red grapefruit 2cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 2 tbsp Waitrose Pure Clear Honey 200g pack Waitrose North Atlantic Cooked and Peeled Large Prawns, defrosted and drained 50g bag roquette

Method 1. Cut the melons in half; scoop out the seeds and discard. Using a small, sharp knife remove the flesh from both halves and cut into cubes. Place in a large bowl. Turn the melon shells upside down on kitchen paper and leave to drain. 2. Segment the grapefruit over a bowl, to reserve the juice. First cut a slice off the top and bottom. Then, using a small, sharp knife or serrated fruit knife cut from top to bottom to remove the skin and pith. Now cut between the membrane of each segment and remove. Roughly chop the segments and add to the melon pieces, reserving 2 tablespoons of the juice. 3. In a small bowl, mix together the ginger, honey and reserved grapefruit juice. Stir in the melon and grapefruit pieces, and the prawns. 4. Place a little of the roquette in the base of each melon shell, reserving a few leaves to garnish. Top with the fruit and prawn mixture, spooning over any remaining dressing. Garnish with the reserved roquette and serve. Cook’s tips Prepare the filling up to 2 hours in advance to allow the flavours to develop. Cover and chill then add to the shells when ready to serve.

Home buying

Guide

Buying a home can be stressful. Here is our guide to working through the buying process. From deciding what your truly looking for to that all important negotiation of an offer! Good Luck

B

uying your first property or moving to a new property is a big step that involves a substantial long-term financial commitment. The first thing to do is to think long and hard about what you can afford. The main things you need to consider are what assets you have like savings as well as working out your monthly income an expenditures. The last thing that you want to do is to commit to a mortgage that you cant afford to repay and leaves you with nothing left at the end of the month for the nicer things in life that you may be enjoying now. Although this may reduce your buying options, its best to be comfortable with what you can happily afford. This is most probably going to be your biggest financial commitment you take on, remember that it is a loan secured against your house. So if you don’t keep up the repayments the bank can reposes the property. It best to make sure you have a mortgage in place and agreed prior to making any offers. This way you can avoid being pipped to the post by other buyers. It also puts you in a much stronger position when negotiating the offer that you want to make. Generally, the best mortgage deals are available to people who put in at least 15% of the property’s value, leaving the mortgage company to lend the other 85%. If you put in less than 10%, you may have to pay a “Higher Lending Fee” (sometimes called a Mortgage Indemnity or a Mortgage Guarantee Charge)

42

which will add to the cost of your mortgage. CHOSING THE RIGHT PROPERTY FOR YOU: This is the time when you draw up a list of everything that you are looking to get out of you new home. On the opposite end of the scale, the things that you really don’t want out of your new home. Its also a good idea to look at parts in which you may be willing to compromise on. You can now pass this list on to your estate agent and inform them of your buying position, if you have a mortgage agreed or if you have a property to sell. • • • • • •

Number of bedrooms / bathrooms. Garage Office Space Large Garden Close to a train station In need of modernisation

THE AREA: Making sure the area that you are moving to is key in any move. This is where

it pays to do your research. Firstly, search the internet for house prices, school performances, the transport links to you r place of work, crime rates and other amenities. You can use the local council website to find out about the tax bandings. Make appointments to visit local schools, get a fell for them. Spend a few hours walking around the area, parks and shops. Talk to people about the area. Remember its best to find out now if the locals have bad things to say about an area before you commit to a mortgage. GETTING THE MOST OUT OF VIEWINGS Once you have found a property that interests you, make sure yo have as much information as possible before you go on the viewing. The estate agent that is advertising

CL Home the property will be able to provide you with details of floorplans, photos, local area information. Its also a good time to think of any questions that you may want to ask the owner that you have not been able to find out else where. Don’t be shy in your questioning, its beater you know the answers now and not after you have moved in. Once you feel you have everything in place, call the agent and arrange the booking. Remember, always take a second viewing as you can be blown away on a first viewing and not have your practical head on. MAKING AND NEGOTIATING AN OFFER Once you have found the property of you dreams, its time to make an offer. This is the time to really look at what you feel you are willing to pay for this property. Consider work to the house that will need to be done, whilst also making sure you don’t under offer and lose the house of your dreams. Buyers who have a pre arranged mortgage, Cash buyers and even first time buyers can have a head start against the competition. So if you fit into this category, make sure the buyer is aware of this as it can put you in a better position when it comes to negotiating an offer. Find out how log they have had the property up for sale and if they have reduce the price at all, they may also be in a hurry to sell. If this is the case they may be willing to accept a low offer as they are in need of the sale. On the other hand seller’s who are new to the market and are in no hurry are more likely to hold out for the asking price. Knowing your budget ceiling is crucial so decide your maximum limit from the start and stand firm. If the seller refuses to budge, you need to think very carefully if the property really is worth the extra money and of course, what you will have to live without over the long term. Do your homework and check what the property is truly worth. Whilst sold house prices can help give an idea of recent sales, it’s better to see what the competition is like now. If there are few similar properties for sale in the area, chances are the seller has the upper-hand. Also, if there are

any faults or repair work required, use this to justify a lower offer. In tougher times when there are fewer buyers, sellers may be more willing to negotiate on price. Once you make an offer make it clear that it’s subject to contract and a satisfactory survey. If you are buying from a developer, while selling an existing property, see if they will offer a part exchange to buy your existing house. And good luck! WHAT TO DO ONCE THE OFFER IS ACCEPTED Once you have agreed a price with the seller, its a good time to ask them to take it off the market. They don’t legally have to do this , but if it’s taken off the market it will shut out other potential buyers. Now the ball is in your court and its time to move as fast as you can with arranging the surveys and other legal work. Have everything sent off that is required on your lenders application form, which will be your proof of ID, Bank statements, proof of earnings and some other bits. Once this is all completed and returned to your lender, they will arrange to have you new home valued. If you do not need a mortgage to purchase your property, you do not have to have a survey carried out though this would not be advisable. When looking to buy an older house that may be in need of repairs, you should also take in to consideration a more detailed survey over and above the basic lenders valuation survey. You can ask your estate agent or local surveyor for a quotation for the different levels of surveys. The lender will use the surveyor’s Valuation Report and other information you provided to calculate how much it will allow you to borrow by way of mortgage secured on the property. GETTING READY TO MOVE This can often be one of the most stressful parts of the move. So being organised can really reduce any un needed extra stress and really help to make the whole day run smoothly.

Here are some tips to make moving day as smooth as possible: • Use a good removal firm - seek recommendations from friends • Look for members of the British Association of Removers who operate a strict code of conduct. • If possible, try to stagger moving days so you don’t have to do everything all in one day. • Try to avoid Mondays and Fridays which are the busiest days on the roads. • Save time and cost by doing some of the packing yourself. • Check out the best value utility contracts for your new property well in advance and read the meters in both properties on moving day. • Redirect post well beforehand - this is especially essential to protect yourself from identity theft • If your new place has any appliances left behind, download the instruction manuals from the manufacturer’s website.

Knowing your budget ceiling is crucial so decide your maximum limit from the start and stand firm.

A

Wriggle wriggle

new dance craze perhaps? Well maybe … if you’re a worm that is! In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free?

waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato, (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters…they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle). That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding actively in line with their environment. Bizarrely they can also change gender to suit the local talent on offer!

As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a premade version online? Most kids love worms so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time.

They don’t like extremes in temperature, so I’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which does not get too hot or cold. Their home can be insulated in winter, or moved into the garage. The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted at 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too.

Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen

Jobs to do this month • Protecting early spring growth from pesky slugs (try a midnight slug hunt!) • Hoe off any newly germinating weed seedlings on a dry day • Cut back shrubs such as Cornus (dogwood) and Buddleia • Herbaceous perennials such as Hostas which are just beginning to re-grow can be dug up and chopped into 2 or 4 pieces and replanted to make more. • Begin feeding fish • Don’t forget to provide food for the worms – add a 5cm layer of compost to the top of the soil and let the worms pull it in

GET YOUR GARDEN READY FOR SUMMER

With spring upon us, now is the perfect time to start thinking about re-vamping or creating that dream garden. The mistake that a lot of people make is leaving it to late. So, this year if you have been thinking about a change to your garden nows the time to start doing something about it. Don’t wait for the sun to start making an appearance, start planning and taking steps to transform your garden today. Having your garden re designed or over hauled can be a lengthly process, sometimes putting your garden out of use for a number of weeks depending on the amount of work you are having done. Thats why spring can be the perfect time to carry out the work, whilst the weather outside is still not quite warm enough to dig out those summer clothes or dust off that BBQ.

Don’t wait for the sun to start making an appearance, start planning and taking steps to transform your garden today.

This year plan ahead and don’t be the one thinking i wish i had, had that new patio laid for this summer! Instead be the envy of your friends and neighbours, and let them wish they had an amazing garden to entertain in this summer like yours. We highly recommend calling in the experts. They have great knowledge of what will work to suit your needs and requirements and to create a garden that will work for you 12 months of the year! All thats left to do then, when the sun finally appears, is to sit back and enjoy your garden!

PROTECT YOUR PET

T

Dog & Cat Microchipping...

he Government have recently agreed that by April 2016 it will be compulsory for all dogs within the UK to be microchipped.

Microchipping is the accepted method of identifying your pet worldwide and is highly recommended by vets and animals organisations throughout the UK. What is a microchip ? A tiny, glass inert capsule containing an identification number linking you to your pet. How does it work ? A small hand held scanner is used to detect the microchip number. This number is registered with Petlog, the national central database run by The Kennel Club. When a vet, rescue centre, dog warden or authorised microchipper contacts Petlog they will confirm your contact details and you will be reunited with your pet. Where is the microchip implanted? Under the skin between the shoulder blades. How long will it take to implant? Just a few moments, in fact by the time you’ve completed the paperwork your pet will already be protected.

small pinch or mild sting – similar to a minor injection. The dog does not feel the chip at all after it has been inserted. As well as reuniting you with your pet Microchips also have several other benefits. If you plan to travel abroad your pet must have a microchip to comply with the regulations. Microchips can also be used to activate some cat and dog doors, therefore only allowing your pet entry to your home. So if your dog isn’t already microchipped now is the time to get it done ! At Pets Galore Coulsdon we are happy to offer a microchipping service for both dogs and cats by appointment. We can also come to your home if you have a particularly nervous pet or a litter of puppies or kittens that require microchipping. We use both the standard microchips and mini microchips. We are veterinary trained and fully insured.

How long does registration last ? Your pet is registered for life, although you must remember to update your details with Petlog when you move or change telephone number. Is it going to hurt my pet? Microchipping feels like a

SUPERDOG Casper has changed Sue’s life dramatically, before Casper Sue couldn’t be alone, she almost got to the point of not being able to work.

C

asper might just look like a handsome poodle but this is no ordinary dog. He truly is a Superdog. Casper is a Medical alert dog which are trained to help families or individuals with life threatening conditions, these dogs help save lives everyday! When the dogs are trained, two scents of the owner are collected; one from the owner when they’re well and the other when they’re unwell. They are then taught to recognise the scent that means the owner is unwell and they are rewarded and they then associate being rewarded with that scent. Casper is a miniature poodle who visits Top to Tail every month and keeps his groom to perfection as he goes everywhere with his owner. He lives with Sue and her family and helps her know when her blood sugars are low, if this is the case Casper will jump up at Sue and she knows she needs to do something, he knows before she does! Casper used to just stare at Sue, trying to alert her, so Sue was told to walk away if she thought he was trying to tell her as their job is to be persistent and get their owners attention. When Casper has a chance to chill out at home, his favourite thing to do is play with his wood pigeon Wilbur, he has a great game with his family. If someone says ‘get Wilbur’ he knows exactly what to do and rummages through all his toys until he finds him! Casper has changed Sue’s life dramatically, before Casper Sue couldn’t be alone, she almost got to the point of not being able to work. But now Casper has given her back her independence, he is literally with her 24-7 and is a constant companion. Sue found out about alert dogs by searching online and said she would definitely recommend alert dogs to anyone else in her situation. Casper is always there to lend a helping paw.

CL Movie Interview

OZ

THE GREAT AND POWERFUL SPECIAL! The stars of the upcoming prequel to the ‘The Wizard of Oz’ talk about special powers, flying broomsticks and all things magical... BY Wallice Avery

T

he Wizard of Oz’ is one of greatest films ever made during Hollywood’s golden period.

And now fans of the 1939 movie will learn how the great Oz himself ended up ruling the magical land. James Franco plays the much beloved silver screen icon in ‘Oz the Great And Powerful’, which is directed by Sam Raimi of ‘Spider-Man’ fame. The 2013 film starts off following the adventures of Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with questionable ethics, with the earthly scenes all being shot in black and white in homage to the original.

gained for, as he is able to put his earthly conjuring arts to use through illusion, ingenuity and even a bit of wizardry. Paving the way for the Oscar-winning original’s story, he manages to transform himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well. Here, the stars of ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ talk about special powers, flying broomsticks and all things magical... WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO A BIG BUDGET DISNEY MOVIE? RACHEL WEISZ: Sam...

He is transported over the rainbow to the Land of Oz after his hot air balloon is caught in a whirlwind in Kansas. Oscar thinks he has hit the jackpot and that fame and fortune are his for the taking. But the conjurer has to work out which of a tantalising trio of witches he can trust in the strange and magical place. The enchanting beauties are played by Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. Rachel Weisz is Evanora, Mila Kunis is Theodora and Michelle Williams play Glinda play the witches It emerges the trio are not convinced he is the prophesied great wizard the people have been waiting for. Oscar ends up being drawn into the epic problems facing the Oz, with his biggest priority discovering who good and evil before it is too late. And he proves to be more than the witches bar-

MICHELLE WILLIAMS: He’s very attractive. RACHEL WEISZ: Very attractive. And the chance to do something fantastical and magical and not Earth bound. You’re off in Emerald city and it’s just something challenging and new and really different and the captain of the ship was Mr. Raimi and that really was a huge part of why I was willing to go on the journey. MICHELLE WILLIAMS: It also references a question you asked, that was really something I responded to when I read it. It’s humour wasn’t mean, it wasn’t sarcastic, it really didn’t feel like a movie made for adults under the subterfuge of being made for children, it really felt like something that you could whole-heartedly bring your family to without having to explain certain parts away or cringe when they do something that’s a little bit inappropriate. I really responded to the heart that’s at the centre of the film. >>>>>

RACHEL WEISZ: Sorry to keep going on about Sam but I do think that heart that’s at the center of the film is Sam. He’s doesn’t have any meanness in [him], he’s really just kind and respectful and gallant and romantic and a gentleman but that’s like roaming around in his imagination is what I felt like I was doing. MICHELLE WILLIAMS: Yeah and the sensibility, there’s nothing, and you’re wicked and you’re devious, but the spirit of the film is more playful and trickster. DID BOTH OF YOU KEEP ANYTHING FROM THE FILM AND, RACHEL, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO PLAY A BAD GIRL? RACHEL WEISZ: I very much liked being a bad girl, I

skill. Flying number one and lightning bolts number two. MICHELLE WILLIAMS: Making little girls smile when you walk by. WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST RECOLLECTION OF ‘THE WIZARD OF OZ’? MICHELLE WILLIAMS: I don’t remember the first time I saw the movie but as I’ve tried to sort of think about that over the last few days and ponder those questions, I think it was one of the first things that made me want to perform. Because Judy Garland is so otherworldly in that movie and it really draws you in. It was one of the first aspiration moments of my life and then when I was eight or nine, I was cast in the school production but I was just

Featureflash / Shutterstock.com thought it was really fun, I really enjoyed it. In real life, we learn when we’re kids not to be cruel to each other as human beings, we’re all kind of civilized people so it’s fun to be in drama and in fantasy land where you can bring out your bad side and nobody is gonna get hurt, it’s just pretend, so I really just relished it. The meaner I was, I found it sort of funny. MICHELLE WILLIAMS: Well I kept my crown because I have figured out a way to use that in my day to day. You’ll be seeing that look over and over again. The costumes were something that I really liked working in the costumes, I liked the evolution of it. It began in a place that was not so great. I felt like I had a really hands on role in the wardrobe which is really great which I appreciated. WAS THE WIRE WORK PAINFUL OR FUN OR PAINFUL AND FUN? MICHELLE WILLIAMS: I think we both really loved being on the wires. RACHEL WEISZ: Yeah, it’s really fun. It’s a little scary the first day. We had a rehearsal period where these wonderful stunt coordinators who had worked extensively with Sam on this so they were all experts. WHAT WAS THE BEST PART ABOUT BEING A WITCH? RACHEL WEISZ: Flying, it’s really hard to beat flying as a

a munchkin in the background. RACHEL WEISZ: I think it is the first film I remember seeing so it was very powerful in that sense. I was really scared of the Wicked Witches. I think Judy Garland, her voice, I’m not a big musical fan and I struggle a bit when people break into songs in film but there’s something about her voice that I just feel like she’s a divine gift. JAMES, WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE WORKING WITH SAM RAIMI AGAIN FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FILM NOW? JAMES FRANCO: I love Sam. I’ve known Sam for over ten years because we did the ‘Spiderman Trilogy’ together and he is one of the most fun directors to work with and that’s no small thing. When somebody, a director on a film really sets the tone of how people go about things so when you have someone like Sam everyone is happy to be at work, everyone does their best. He’s a very collaborative director and not just with the actors, with all departments and it really makes people want to do their best because they all feel like they’re a big part of the movie and they are. I love working with Sam. I’d do anything with him. MILA, YOUR CHARACTER HAS AN INCREDIBLE ARC AND YOU TALK ABOUT PLAYING HER AS A WOMAN SCORNED. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT PROCESS? >>>>>>

CL Movie Interview MILA KUNIS: It’s one of those things where I got very nervous about playing such an iconic character, at least playing such an iconic end result, and I didn’t want to ruin it and I didn’t want to recreate it and I didn’t want to reinterpret it so in order for me to wrap my head around it, I needed to make sense of her origin. And then it was just given to me, kind of as a gift, this girl who was incredibly needy, very young and almost doesn’t feel like she’s worthy of love and has never truly experienced love, mets James Franco and he falls madly in love with her character nonetheless and they get to work on it and while she doesn’t have the emotional tools of dealing with heartache, doesn’t want to deal with it, takes the easy way out, given my her sister and goes through an emotional transformation that’s mirrored by a physical one and she happens to change color. I honestly viewed her as just a normal girl who gets her heart broken who just so happens to be a witch. JAMES, YOU HAVE TO LEARN MAGIC FOR THE MOVIE, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE AND HAVE YOU USED IT SINCE TO SHOW OFF? JAMES FRANCO: Yeah, I got to learn with Lance Burton who is a great magician from Las Vegas and I got private lessons. It was pretty fun and I could accomplish the tricks. There were either more tricks than made it into the film, we just had to cut some of them for time. I got to learn quite a few pretty cool tricks that if I took them to parties I probably would get a lot of attention but I need a lot of help from Lance to pull them off and he doesn’t travel around with me so it’s just one of the skills that I’ve learned along the way like sword fighting and flying a plane

that I just don’t use so much after the movie. MILA, YOU ARE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. DID PLAYING AN UGLY OLD WITCH INHIBIT YOU IN ANY WAY? MILA KUNIS: It was quite the opposite, it was a great way to kind of lose your inhibitions and let yourself go and not concern yourself with what you look like. That being said, it’s just a fun character and you never really want to do characters that are always pretty and have their hair done. The film that I just finished doing, James played my ex-husband in. I didn’t have any makeup on and my hair was really frizzy and curly like my natural hair so wait until you see that one, it makes this look fabulous. It’s one of those things were you just want to differ things and you can’t do any more different than this story. JAMES, YOU GET A LOT OF PRAISE OF BEING MULTI-TALENTED, BUT TO WHAT EXTEND DO YOU FEEL GREAT AND POWERFUL? JAMES FRANCO: I have a lot of things I do. It’s not really, for me, it’s not about rising to the top or feeling powerful, it’s an exploration. I have a lot of different interests and subjects that I want to engage with and for me it’s about finding the form that best fits each subject. It’s something that a lot of contemporary artists do, it’s this sort of post-medium enterprise. It’s that I come from the commercial film world or different spotlight than contemporary artists so it feels weird when I do it but it’s really just an earnest exploration of form and content.

CL Book Review Standing in Another Man’s Grave Ian Rankin

You can follow us on TwitterRebus is back. Since he was pensioned off in Exit Music, he has just search for remained a constant in the thoughts of many detective fans – and, @coveredlocal it seems, in the mind of his creator, Ian Rankin. As the book opens we find Rebus at a funeral – familiar territory. Rather than retiring quietly, he has become involved in the Cold Cases unit, in a civilian capacity. Very soon, a chance visitor to the unit sparks a trail which seems to be linked to a not-at-all cold case – the disappearance of a fifteen year old schoolgirl as she travelled north... Once the plot line is established, it is business as usual for Rankin and Rebus. The old familiar faces are there – Siobhan Clarke, now striking out on her own, Big Ger Cafferty, still alive and kicking, and even Rankin’s more recent creation, Malcolm Fox – unsurprisingly, ‘The Complaints’ have a file three feet thick on Rebus, and his reapplication to join CID has triggered new interest. The locations may be further north than usual, with much of the novel taking place around Pitlochry and Inverness, but there are plenty of Edinburgh scenes too. Of course, Rebus works along to a soundtrack – the title itself is half taken from a Jackie Leven song, and there are musical nods ranging from The Stones to Kate Bush along the way. Rankin’s strength is in the way his novels combine the elements of a police procedural with strong, character led fiction. Details are well observed, subplots developed and resolved, and the main action rattles along toward the conclusion which, as ever, leaves more than a few loose ends. The most hopeful of these is that Rebus will be back, and as sales of the novel in the first few weeks proved, there is still an appetite for his distinctive style – long may he continue.

How to Train Your Dragon Cressida Cowell How to Train Your Dragon is the first book in Cressida Cowell’s phenomenally popular Viking saga, and from the first pages it is easy to see how she has attracted legions of fans. Here we meet for the first time Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third – who, as everyone knows (because it’s explained in the introduction), was the greatest Viking hero that ever lived. However, as the book begins he is, quite frankly, hopeless. As he embarks on the Dragon Initiation Programme in order to become a full member of the tribe of the Hairy Hooligans, he knows he is doomed to fail - and, when your father is Chief of the tribe, what could be worse? Well, catching a toothless dragon, for one thing. Finding out that said dragon is also spectacularly disobedient is another. And, just as Hiccup thinks that rock bottom has truly been reached, a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus rolls up on the beach. If it gets its way, there won’t be a tribe to be initiated into any more, and only Hiccup can deal with this – because he alone of all the tribe can talk to dragons. Hiccup is a character both enduring and endearing, and Toothless the dragon is one of the great non-human characters in recent children’s literature. The book rolls along at a cracking pace, with illustrations and side notes from Cowell which bring the Isle of Berk and its inhabitants to life. The book starts with a map – a surefire sign that the world within is fully realised and developed and if you are a seven year old boy, what more could you want? A sequel? Don’t worry, there are plenty.

CL Bird Review

All Change for Birds John Birkett. RSPB Croydon Local Group

Wheatear by John Flynn

Waxwings by Gill Flynn

Chaffinch by Dan Bound

By the time you are reading this, hopefully, the worst of the winter weather will be over and you can look forward to spring. The cold weather in January did have one benefit; it brought many more birds to feed in our gardens. It will be some time before we can check the results of our survey, but personal experience and information from other sources suggest this to be the case. In my own garden good numbers of Greenfinches took to the feeders while, as is their wont, Chaffinches foraged on the ground below them. For two days though, the Greenfinches had competition in the form of a very feisty female Blackcap who was seeing off all comers. Apples and dried fruit on the ground attracted higher than normal numbers of Blackbirds and also a few Fieldfares. These winter visitors to our shores had been in fairly short supply locally this winter, but the weather brought in several large flocks with some being seen passing overhead during the periods of heavy snow. Waxwings are annual winter visitors to Britain, but numbers are highly variable from year to year. When the berry crop fails in their native Scandinavia thousands cross the North Sea and spread out across the country. This has been one such winter. We have had sightings of several flocks around Croydon. In November there were over 30 for a week or so in Shrublands and in January there was an elusive flock in South Croydon for over three weeks with others in Coulsdon and a small group spent a week on Kenley Common. One lucky person found a flock of 25 feeding on a small berry bush by his front door. Another found them feeding on apples left on a tree in his garden. There may still be some around and if you know of a bush or tree that still has berries or apples you could strike gold and find some of these Bohemians for yourself before they head home. Talking of heading home, March sees the start of spring migration. Our winter visitors will be heading back north. If you are outside after dark on a clear night, especially near a full moon, listen out for the thin ‘seep’ calls of flocks of Redwings. Some garden visitors, such as Siskins and Lesser Redpolls, may take time to feed up before they leave (March is the peak time for them to be seen in our gardens). It is also when the first of our summer birds turn up. Listen out for Chiffchaffs with their onomatopoeic songs from early March and later in the month the first Wheatears may turn up on areas of grassland. I hope you enjoy the ever changing panoply of our birdlife and that you are putting out a variety of foods (as well as fresh water) to keep them healthy. We are always looking for more volunteers to help with our survey; it doesn’t cost anything apart from as little or as much of your time as you are willing to give. To find out more about the survey and other activities of the RSPB Croydon Local Group visit our website (www.croydon-rspb.org.uk) or better still come along to one of our monthly meetings.
