By The Reverend John Sundara Curate for Adult Formation

Discipleship is essential to the mission of the Church. Every Gospel records a variation of Jesus’ final command to his Church: “make disciples,” (Matthew 28:18–20, Mark 16:15– 18, Luke 24:44–49, John 20:19–23). And every parish is only as fruitful as long as it makes disciples. Towards this goal, the leadership at Incarnation began reflecting, praying, and consulting about creating a common discipleship vision for us who call Incarnation our spiritual home. We have a unique and amazing gift here. We are privileged to worship God in a diversity of rich liturgy. Only a few places in the Episcopal Church do this excellently. We have grown rapidly in baptisms and confirmations, and in hosting conferences and lectures. We also have a thriving ministry of service to the poor; not only do we take our neighborhood relationships seriously, we continually link arms with global partners to serve in international areas of need. We are additionally blessed with a strong history of leadership and stewardship for the renewal of God’s Church. Worship, Grow, Serve, Lead, and Give—this is what it means to call Incarnation home. Now, God is bringing us to a new place of growth. Soon we will launch our Incarnation North campus, with its own array of ministries. Our mission trips continue to increase, and so has local outreach. We had 140 kids in Vacation Bible School this past summer—the largest number in our recent history. We anticipate that this growth will not slow down, since many families continue to make Incarnation the place where they baptize and raise their children. In the Fall, we will be hosting the RADVO conference to raise leaders for the Church (see inside front cover). Our parish needs to go deeper so that we can go further. We need a common foundation for educating and forming parishioners in our mission values of worshipping, growing, serving, leading, and giving. It’s only as we dig deep into the faith, can we be fruitful and multiply. The Psalmist describes the righteous person, “like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither,” (Psalm 1:3). Similarly, the prophet Jeremiah, preached that the righteous person “is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit,”(Jeremiah 17:8)

Jesus takes up this imagery with his disciples. He says, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing,” (John 15:5 ESV). Apart from Christ we can do nothing. As we abide in Christ, we can deepen our spiritual roots in him so that we continue growing into abundant trees with branches that provide shelter for the birds of the air, fruit for the hungry and shade for the weary. Therefore, we as clergy are excited to announce our new Fall campaign—“Deep Roots.” Deep Roots has two aspects. The first is our Fall preaching series on the Nicene Creed. Every Sunday we will be preaching on one section of the Nicene Creed, the foundation of our historical and common faith. We are also encouraging Growth Groups to study the creeds with books like “I Believe: Exploring the Apostle’s Creed” by Alister McGrath, “Hope for Us: Knowing God through the Nicene Creed” by Natasha Robinson, and “Know the Creeds and Councils” by Justin Holcomb. Find out more Growth Group information at our Group Link event on Sunday, September 9, during the Sunday School hour. The second is our Deep Roots: Growing Deeper in Discipleship curriculum. This curriculum has four Foundation Courses—Worship, Grow, Serve, Lead/Give, that focus on our four mission values. The courses will include fresh content, including the liturgical calendar, sacramental theology, an overview of Scripture, the Gospels’ teachings on Jesus’ compassion for the least of these, the Great Commission, and Biblical stewardship. We will also have the Canterbury Course which looks at what it means to be Episcopalian today. We hope that these courses give us a common language and framework, and a common set of spiritual practices and habits that inculcate in us the virtues necessary for living out our discipleship. Foundation Courses will be offered regularly and often so that we can all have opportunities to learn what it means to be a member of Incarnation. This Fall, we hope that you will seize these opportunities. It has been said that if you want to go further, you must go deeper. If you want to spread the faith, you must strengthen the faithful. A Christianity that is a mile wide and an inch deep is of little use to anyone. It cannot withstand the assaults and challenges of our world. Thus, only as we individually flourish as disciples, can Incarnation’s mission flourish and grow. Our desire is that each parishioner will be engaged and challenged towards a deeper commitment for God and participation in his mission. Let’s link arms and go deeper, so that we can go further to fulfill what God is calling us to do.

By Scott Dettra Director of Music & Organist

If you haven’t been to one of our Music at Incarnation Concert Series programs over the last several years, you don’t know what you’re missing. Excellent music is woven into the fabric of worship at Incarnation—at both the traditional and contemporary services—but you may not know that our concert series presents many of the world’s finest choirs in concert, singing some of the most beautiful choral music ever composed. Being an Episcopal church, we naturally focus our series on choirs from the Anglican tradition. In recent years, we have presented world-famous choirs such as those from King’s College, Cambridge; Westminster Abbey; Trinity College, Cambridge; Canterbury Cathedral; New College, Oxford; Hereford Cathedral; St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London; Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue; and Washington National Cathedral. In addition to liturgical choirs, we have also presented concert choirs that specialize in sacred music, such as the Tallis Scholars, Stile Antico, the ORA Singers, Anonymous 4, and New York Polyphony. We are lucky, indeed, to be able to bring such renowned ensembles to sing for us. This season, we will present four excellent choirs: Stile Antico; the Westminster Choir; Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue; and New College, Oxford. Stile Antico will sing a Christmas program for us on Friday, December 14. They are firmly established as one of the world’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles. Working without a conductor, its twelve members have thrilled audiences throughout Europe and North America with their fresh, vibrant and moving performances of Renaissance polyphony. Its bestselling recordings on the Harmonia Mundi label have earned accolades including the Gramophone Award for Early Music, Diapason d’or de l’année, Edison Klassiek Award, and Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, and have received three Grammy® nominations. Stile Antico is renowned for the committed and expressive performances that arise from its uniquely collaborative style of working: members rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical results. The group is also noted for its compelling programming, drawing out thematic connections between works to shine new light on Renaissance music. The Westminster Choir will join us for a concert on Thursday, January 17. Setting the standard for choral excellence in America for 98 years, the Westminster Choir has been hailed by audiences and critics for its creative programing and ability

to deeply engage listeners. Praised by The New York Times for its “full-bodied, incisive singing,” the Westminster Choir also forms the core of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, which has performed and recorded with the leading conductors and orchestras of our time. It has been the chorus-in-residence for the prestigious Spoleto Festival USA since 1977, performing both in concert and as the opera chorus. Their 2014 performance at Incarnation was incredibly well received, and you won’t want to miss this return engagement. On Sunday, March 17, we will welcome back the choir of Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, considered by many to be the leading ensemble in the Anglican choral tradition in the United States. In addition to singing five choral services each week at Saint Thomas Church, the choir performs on their own concert series, and tours throughout the world. The men of the Saint Thomas Choir are professional singers; the boy choristers attend Saint Thomas Choir School. Founded in 1919, it is the only church related boarding choir school in the United States, and one of only a few choir schools remaining in the world. The Choir School offers a challenging pre-preparatory curriculum, interscholastic sports, and musical training for boys in grades three through eight. The Choir School is committed to training and educating talented musicians without regard to religious, economic, or social background. Choristers are sought from all regions of the country. Their director, Daniel Hyde, has recently been appointed Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge, a position he will take up soon after their appearance at Incarnation. The Choir of New College, Oxford will perform for us on Saturday, April 6. Since their appearance in our series in 2013, the choir has a new director and a slightly different sound and repertoire. One of the world’s most celebrated vocal ensembles, the choir was founded in 1379 (not a typo!) as part of the “New” College of St. Mary the Virgin in Oxford. Remarkably little about the choir has changed since the fourteenth century; the sixteen choristers are still educated at New College School, and, together with the Academical and Lay Clerks, sing daily services in the college chapel during University term. The size and make-up of New College Choir in the 1380s became the prototype for similar collegiate and cathedral foundations, setting a pattern that continues to this day in many parts of the world. Outside University term, New College Choir is often to be heard in concert, in Oxford and around the world. We are excited about the upcoming season of concerts, and hope you will join us for some or all of them!

in Haitia Beautya By Emma Carruth Student Ministry Haiti Missioner

Haiti consists of 11,112,945 innocent lives that have an opportunity to know Jesus and praise Him. Although Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, blessings can still be found abundantly through the many smiles and laughter that I had the privilege of sharing. Many decide to only remember the brokenness of Haiti but the beauty shines from within and I believe Jesus has made this country incredibly beautiful with its shattered parts.

2 Corinthianss 12:9–10 sstates: “But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, and my power is made perfect in weakness.'

Therefore, I will boast of my weakness, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Christ has made me content with weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” What an exquisite way to be reminded of God's beauty and promises for us all to be safe in His arms no matter the “weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities” we face. Calling Titanyen, Haiti, my home for a full ten days was an eye-opening experience for me and our group. We grew closer to not just one another but the Haitians as well. In the mornings, we traveled by bus to the main campus of Mission of Hope to help with the Vacation Bible School they put together every summer for all of the surrounding villages to learn more about Jesus, or “Jezi,” as they say. During this time, we all had one or two children to connect with and to build these relationships throughout the week. For me, this child's name was Bishnika, a nine-year-old girl from the village of Titanyen with three sisters, one being her

twin, Milo. From the moment I met this shy, but radiant, ray of sunshine, I knew she would forever be dear to my heart. It took all of me to not pack her in my bags and take her back to the United States, and I think others within my group can agree. Every day to launch and end VBS, we had a time of worship and singing about Jesus in Creole, which not many of us understood, but it was truly remarkable to be serving the same God, no matter the language. Following this, we traveled to our first station of VBS. In a schoolhouse, we taught about proper hygiene which included things from how to brush your teeth to washing your hands and everything in between. While these may seem like simple things, they are not taught these life skills at home. Following the hygiene lesson, my group traveled to the kitchen, filled with wonderfully patient women, that would feed each child a plate of mixed rice with a noodle on top and a plastic pouch of clean water. The next station “Jezi Time” was a period for the kids to learn more about who Jesus is and all the incredible things He does and continues to do for us. After “Jezi Time,” our group went to the sports area to decompress from the long morning of VBS and enjoy one another's company under the sun. During sports time, the children played soccer, jumped rope, played Haitian tic-tac-toe, basketball, and many more smilefilled games together. This station was last every day and was so sad because it meant one less day to spend with the beautiful children of Haiti, witnessing them learning about Jesus. Goodbyes were hard every day but the last day was the hardest. On the last day, something I will never forget is Bishnika telling me she loves me, which hit me in such an overwhelming way to know that this child of God appreciated my time with her as much as I did. Haiti is such a magnificent place filled with extraordinarily loving people and I cannot wait to see what amazing things God chooses to do with this country.

GIVING God MY BEST

By Matthew Bomberger Vestry Member

Living a faithful life has always been important to me. Looking back though, I was living within MY comfort zone, prioritizing what I thought to be most important for a healthy balanced life for my family and me. Though we made annual financial commitments and regularly served in the church, I saved my free time and extra energy for personal endeavors. When my marriage ended, God drew me into His grace to teach me about obedience and trust in Him.

changed so completely, I would have missed out on these kingdom opportunities. (Shameless plug for Incarnation North. We need you—sign up now!)

Last fall I had some flexibility at work and felt the call on my heart to lead a disaster relief trip to the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The devastation to each of the communities we assisted was overwhelming. None of us would have guessed the work we completed in those short weekend trips and we could readily see the emotional, mental, and physical relief of affected families we helped.

While on one of these trips, I learned of a ministry less than two miles from Incarnation: The Gathering, an outdoor church for the homeless endorsed by the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas which meets UNDERSTANDING OUR every Sunday afternoon in Thanksgiving GIFTS AND HOW TO USE Square. I attend when I can these days and am encouraged that Growth Groups from THEM CORRECTLY IS Incarnation are becoming involved in this NOT AN EASY TASK— ministry of hope, purpose, and strength for the homeless community that is always among us but seldom seen.

In those early dark hours, the Church and my faith carried me to the dawn. Connecting with seasoned Christians and receiving their wise counsel helped me learn how to praise God even in the midst of disappointment. They encouraged the new meaning and new life I had begun seeking. With an abundance of free time on my hands, I sought out ways to get more involved in ministry work. I found my path through volunteering to serve in worship services. Meeting new people and helping them get connected was energizing. God was beginning to show me my purpose.

at least not at first.

The Good Lord gave me an (old) body meant for hard work. Instinctually I am a project manager, and I live by checklists, making progress, and communication alternatives when a plan doesn’t go as expected. Once I had rediscovered my passion for helping others, God began to open doors and use my (limited) talents for sharing the Gospel in ways I hadn’t imagined. As I entered into my third year as a Vestry member, Bishop Burton asked to meet with me. Fear ran thru the back of my mind—what did I do wrong? What kind of trouble did I get into this time—did I volunteer too much—not enough? My fears were for naught—he asked me to chair an options committee to determine a path forward for a new calling of our parish to establish a satellite campus. Toward the end of that yearlong project, I was asked by the Diocese of Dallas to join their church planting committee. Had my world not

God made His calling on my life evident by circumstance, if nothing else. The Bible tells countless stories of Jesus calling upon the broken and seemingly unqualified to carry out his ministry. Through giving back and getting involved, I’ve met so many awesome people. I now understand that God was giving me spiritual life. Stewardship is no longer just about voluntarily checking a box on a pledge card for me. I recognize my need for it in my daily life. It is never a chore, but a blessing to give back. Seeing first hand the power of ministry for transforming my own heart has been a game changer in how I feel about giving. I continuously look for ways to give God the best of what I have to offer—especially if it helps others in this messy and unpredictable life.

Join us in room 205 as our Theologian-inresidence, Victor Lee Austin, will lead an almost-monthly book seminar. Anyone who reads the book assigned is welcome to the conversation. The format will be a true seminar: Rather than giving a lecture, Fr. Austin will ask an opening question that invites the group to dig into the text together. For the October 14 lecture, we will discuss Murder in the Cathedral, by T. S. Eliot. This is Eliot's great play about the martyrdom of Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket in 1170.

JUNE 17 MENTORING MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. In redirecting young people away from negative and risky behaviors, mentors help communities thrive. An encouraging Christian role model can provide all the difference in helping young people achieve positive academic, professional, and personal outcomes. For more info, contact OUTREACH@INCARNATION.ORG. DONATE SCHOOL SUPPLIES

When families struggle financially, school supplies are not a priority. Pick up extra essentials like binders, pencils, notebooks, paper, glue, scissors, and backpacks to give students the chance to start the school year successfully. Drop off supplies in the baskets located around the church campus. For more information, contact OUTREACH@INCARNATION.ORG.

GOD I S

ALL THE TIM D E OO

OD IS G O EG OD IM

Thank you to all who took part in, prayed for, and lead our Roseland Day of Service on April 28! God provided in so many ways‌He brought the right projects, leadership, volunteers, and beautiful weather. It was a glorious day shared by 500 volunteers from Central Dallas Church, Church of the Incarnation, Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, St. Paul United Methodist, Dallas Housing Authority, Head Start preschool, Dallas Independent School District, and residents of the Roseland community. Together we built relationships and worked side by side to enhance five locations in the Roseland community. Some highlights were: landscaping at 3 locations, building a pavilion, decorating lobbies and another room of Roseland Gardens and Renaissance Oaks, stenciling hallways in Roseland Gardens, painting the Head Start shed and sidewalk outside, improving storage and creating a new teacher resource room at Head Start, painting and decorating throughout Central Dallas Church, updating the Central Dallas Church kitchen and both bathrooms, filling in a rose stencil, creating a new reading room, organizing storage at the Rose, making 775 gift bags of which almost half will stay in the Roseland community, and many more projects! We want to give a special thank you to the Champions who spent months planning Day of Service: Marva Epperson-Brown, Kathy Daume, Nancy Gienger, Uli Gienger, Megan Rain, Sabrina Steward, Pastor Shawn Torres, and Pastor Preston Weaver.
