This year’s fundraising goal: A RECORD $1 MILLION By Julia Arenstam | Staff Writer

The annual Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair will begin Thursday with a goal of hitting the $1 million fundraising mark. Proceeds benefit the all-volunteer department, which has an annual budget of about $2 million, Chief Chad Mire said. With about 430 members, it is the largest all-volunteer department in the nation, Mire said. Last year, the fair broke its fundraising record, raising $940,000 in four days with about 75,000 visitors, he said. The weekend event offers carnival rides, food, auctions, a parade and live musical performances. The fair opens Thursday with pay-oneprice carnival rides from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and a performance by variety band Ryan Foret at 7 p.m. Friday night, registration begins for Saturday’s 5K and fun run. Music by Epic, Category 6 and Sister Hazel is also on tap.

Saturday, the 2018 headliner and country-rock band Lanco will take center stage. The first live auction will begin at 6 p.m. The parade through town will begin at 11 a.m. near St. Joseph’s Elementary and make its way to the fairgrounds just in time for the Firemen’s Auction inside the float barn. Since the first fair was held in 1883, it has grown each year, Mire said. But when former Grand Marshal Jake Giardina said he could see the day the fair would clear a million dollars, the rest of the department said he didn’t know what he walk talking about. “Evidently, he did, because we’re knocking on that door,” Mire said. Attendance has also grown as word spreads and the fair grows from a community to a regional event, he said. — Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia.arenstam@houmatoday.com. Grand marshal says he’s proud to represent Thibodaux By Andrea Mujica | Staff Writer

of Houma; both are parishioners of St. Joseph Cathedral in Thibodaux. He is the father of three and a grandfather of two. Like every fair grand marshal, Bimah will ride a horse in the parade, scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, May 6. There is one catch, though -- he has never ridden a horse. “I am taking care of it,” Bimah said. “I will attend at least two riding classes before the fair.” Fire Chief Chad Mire said there is nothing to worry about because Bimah will be riding a well-behaved horse that has been doing the same route for years. “I was scared at first, I am still scared, but I pray for good weather and hopefully we can raise a lot of money for the Thibodaux Fire Department,” Bimah said. “I want to do well for the people and the Fire Department. They chose me, and I’m hoping to pay them back by having a successful weekend.”

For two years, Lester Bimah kept a secret. He knew he was going to be the grand marshal of the Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair this year but could not say anything until department leaders made the announcement this past January. “I tried to forget it because if I forgot I knew it meant I did not have to keep a secret from my family,” Bimah said. To Bimah, being chosen grand marshal is a “great honor” because he gets to “represent the city and the people of Thibodaux.” A managing partner at Barker Honda in Houma, Bimah also serves on the board for Fire Protection District No. 4. A native of Trinidad and Tobago who moved to the United States at age 17, he is a graduate of Terrebonne High and Nicholls State University. Fire chief has seen fair grow and change By Andrea Mujica | Staff Writer

Thibodaux Fire Chief Chad Mire has been involved in the Firemen’s Fair since he was a teenager. “I used to go to the fair, go to the stand and put hamburgers on the grill with my dad when I was about 14,” Mire said. “My whole family has been involved in the Fire Department.” Mire has been chief for two years. Prior to that, he was assistant fire chief for a decade. “I’ve been in the department for 32 years,” he said. One of the biggest changes Mire has seen is the increasing number of people who come from out of town. Over the past few years, he has talked to people who were attending the New Orleans Jazz Festival and decided to stop by. “Before, we had a community fair, but it has gotten much bigger than that,” Mire said.

Last year’s attendance was tallied at 75,000 people over the four days. Another factor that continues to attract people to the fair is the food, including shrimp stew, crawfish pie, crab cakes, gumbo, jambalaya and the “famous” Fireman’s Fair burger -- to name a few of the dishes. Mire said some people have attended the fair for years just to get some food. A sponsorship program for advertising was started last year and is already helping the department reach its fund-raising goal, which this year is $1 million. he said. “Last year, we raised about $44,000,” he said of the sponsorship program. “We are trying to beat the $50,000 mark this year.” — Staff Writer Andrea Mujica can be reached at 857-1148 or amujica@houmatoday.com. Don’t forget to pick up a poster One way to hang on to your memories of this year’s Firemen’s Fair is to pick up a commemorative poster you can treasure for years to come. “Each year, we release an exclusive poster design created by an artist in the local community,” the fire department says. “These vibrant works of art showcase the creative talent in Thibodaux and make for unforgettable souvenirs.” This year’s poster was created by Thibodaux architect E.A. Angelloz. He graduated from Thibodaux High in 1969 and attended Nicholls State University., then transferred to the University of Louisiana Lafayette and graduated in architecture in 1975. “E.A. loves the Thibodaux area,” a bio on the Firemen’s Fair website says. “His favorite medium is decoupage and mixed medium. E. A. has only been doing canvas drawings for about a year. Although he does some portraits, his favorite subject is architectural renderings of buildings in and around the Thibodaux area.” The original art is a decoupage mixed-medium-style drawing, composed of tiny bits of paper glued onto a canvas. A limited edition, signed by the artist, is available for $30. Only 100 copies will be printed. Call Angelloz at 4139046 or email ea@angellozarchitects.com to purchase. Standard posters will be available for purchase during the fair.

Supporting the fair is supporting the community

Money raised by the fair helps’s pay for equipment and, maintenance and other department operations. [FILE -- DAILYCOMET/HOUMATODAY]

By Dan Copp Staff Writer

Running a fire department doesn’t come cheap, and that’s why organizers say the Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair is so important. Supporting the fair allows the department to purchase and maintain equipment necessary to adequately protect the community, Chief Chad Mire said. “The money goes toward maintaining our fleet, buying new trucks, new equipment, general maintenance and training,” Mire said. “We do internal training, but sometimes outside companies will come in and do some specialized training for us. So it’s a broad area.” With an annual budget of about $2 million, the 430-member department is the largest all-volunteer fire department in

the nation, Mire said. The success of previous fairs has allowed the department to equip its members with stateof-the art gear, board President Ron Bourgeois said. “We buy them pretty much the best you can buy to keep our volunteers as safe as possible,” Bourgeois said. The new equipment is also crucial to help the department maintain its high rating with the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana, which ranks fire departments every five years on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best. The rating factors in communications, response times, equipment, number of units responding to calls, training records and water supply. Thibodaux’s Class 3 rating means the average annual property

insurance policy for a $150,000 home costs about $1,299 a year, according to the Louisiana Department of Insurance. The amount varies depending on property values and each insurance company’s rate schedule. The money raised by the fair helps the department maintain its rating, which saves homeowners money in the long run. Last year’s fair netted a record-breaking $940,000. “Our goal is to always do the best we can,” Mire said. “We always want to break a record, but it’s not every year that you’re going to break records. We’re very blessed and the community supports us tremendously.” — Staff Writer Dan Copp can be reached at 857-2202 or at dan. copp@houmatoday. com. Follow him on Twitter@DanVCopp.

Parking is free at the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department Fairgrounds. During the four-day festival, visitors can park at the fairgrounds’ large parking lot, at Thibodaux High or near St. Genevieve Catholic Church, Chief Chad Mire said. Fairgoers can also park behind the True Value Hardware store, 1143 Tiger Drive. Handicapped

parking is available along Tiger Drive next to the fairgrounds. “There’s no place to say around us that people shouldn’t park," Mire said. Residents in the area are understanding of the festivities, but guests should be aware of their surrounding when parking along the street, Mire said. In the past, the department has received complaints that fairgoers had been approached

along area streets by people trying to collect money for a parking place. If someone is trying to charge for parking, Mire asked they notify volunteers quickly. Thibodaux Police officers will also be on hand to deal with any issues, he said. — Staff Writer Julia Arenstam can be reached at 448-7636 or julia. arenstam@houmatoday. com. Fair burgers achieve legendary status By Dan Copp Staff Writer

The hamburgers served at the Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair need no introduction. Prepared by volunteer firefighters, the burgers have become the stuff of local legend. The burgers’ popularity doesn’t surprise Fire Chief Chad Mire, who knows there’s something special about them. “Let me tell you about these legendary hamburgers,” Mire said. “They’ve always been a big thing. They’re all flame-broiled and never frozen. The machines that make them are custom-built.” Visitors have been known to travel for miles to the fairgrounds just to quell their Firemen’s Fair burger cravings, Mire said. Once the smell of the charbroiled beef wafts through the air, throngs of hungry fairgoers line up to get their burger fix. There are no gimmicks, bacon or any other elaborate toppings. The burgers speak for themselves, and that is enough for its legions of devoted fans. It’s the history that sets these burgers apart from typical festival food, Fire Board President Ron Bourgeois said. “That’s what makes these burgers unique,” Bourgeois said. “It’s the way that they’re made and the process we use to cook them. All the beef comes from Bourgeois Meat Market.” Back in the 1970s the fair would sell more than 40,000 burgers because hamburgers and hotdogs

were pretty much the only menu items available at the time, Mire said. Because of the high demand, fair organizers built a machine with a conveyor belt that would cook the multitude of beef patties. About eight years ago, the machines started showing signs of wear and tear. The department had the machines duplicated, making them bigger and more modern but keeping many of the same components. Today, the fair offers regional food options

like shrimp stew, shrimp creole, shrimp spaghetti, crab cakes with crawfish sauce, crawfish pies, gumbo, boudin, jambalaya, smoked turkey legs and funnel cakes. But the firefighters still sell about 20,000 burgers. “It’s a fresh burger, and people just love them,” Mire said. “People always want to get those fair burgers.” — Staff Writer Dan Copp can be reached at 857-2202 or at dan. copp@houmatoday. com. Organizers have fair planning down to fine art “We’re always getting ready for the fair,” Thibodaux Fire Chief Chad Mire said By Dan Copp Staff Writer

Planning an event as massive as the Thibodaux Firemen’s Fair is no easy task, but after 134 years of trial and error, organizers have gotten it down to a science. Volunteers usually take a month off after each fair before jumping back in to plan the next year’s event, Fire Chief Chad Mire said. “Planning actually never stops,” Mire said. “We’re always getting ready for the fair.” A fair committee made up of members from each of the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department’s companies meets regularly to meticulously map out the ins and outs. “By now everybody knows their duties and jobs, and everything just kind of flows and rolls out,” Mire said. “When it’s over, we’re ready to start back up again next year. Every year it keeps getting bigger.” About a month after the fair wraps up, organizers hold a meeting to critique what worked and what didn’t, Mire said. “We then set goals and projects that we want to accomplish for next year’s fair,” Mire said. “Some of the things we talked about last year is taking a tent where we did our Saturday night auction and putting a permanent structure there. Every year we do different things to improve the grounds.” Last year, fair organizers installed four automated ticket

machines which helped decrease wait times dramatically, Mire said. “Once people realized we had those machines in place, they worked really well,” Mire said. “It’s really quick. You walk up, insert your money and the machine spits out your tickets. This year we added six more machines, which will speed up the process a lot.” In addition to the legions of volunteers, organizers credit the work ethic of fair chairman Foye Lirette for much of the fair’s success. Lirette lives and breathes the Firemen’s Fair, Mire said.

“He does an amazing job,” Mire said. “When people enjoy camping or fishing, Foye enjoys organizing the fairgrounds. He sets projects and moves forward with them. He also does a great job of recruiting people to help him. We’re blessed to have him.” Last year’s fair yielded a record-breaking $940,000 in profits. The auction alone raised more than $450,000, Mire said. -- Staff Writer Dan Copp can be reached at 857-2202 or at dan. copp@houmatoday.com. Follow him on Twitter@ DanVCopp.
