Laissez le bon temps rouler
Houma’s Rougarou Festival, whose theme centers on the swamp werewolf of Cajun lore, is a mix of Mardi Gras and Halloween. A highlight is the parade, which stops at the Courthouse Square so zombie dancers can perform a choreographed rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” routine. One of the best things about fall in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes is not just the cooler weather but the abundance of fairs and festivals. Many of them celebrate the people, food and places who make our part of the
world unique: gumbo, the bayous and Cajun culture. We even have a unique take on Halloween -centered on the mythical bayou creature, the rougarou. This guide includes a list of all the local

Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival AUG. 30 - SEPT. 1 , MORGAN CITY
A Catholic blessing of the shrimp fleet is a part of the annual Shrimp and Petroleum Festival, scheduled Labor Day weekend in Morgan City. [LOUISIANA TRAVEL] What: In its 83rd year, the festival celebrates two of the area’s biggest economic engines -- shrimp and oil. It includes food, live music, fireworks, street and water parades, an arts and crafts sale and rides.

Pushing Paddles for a Cure SEPT. 1, CUT OFF What: Seventh annual paddling trip down Bayou Lafourche raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s summer camp as well as local children with the ailment who need help. When: Sept. 1. Registration starts at 8 a.m. near Holy Rosary Church, 12911 E. Main St., Larose. Padding

Hurricane Festival SEPT. 28-30, CUT OFF What: Cut Off Youth Center’s 52nd annual benefit celebrates Cajun culture with music, food and rides. The festival is manned by about 100 volunteers and serves as a fundraiser for the youth center, which is not publicly financed. When: Sept. 28-30. Chackbay Gumbo Festival OCT. 12-14, CHACKBAY What: The 47th annual Louisiana Gumbo Festival of Chackbay with food, live music, rides and kids’ activities. Benefits the community’s volunteer fire department. One of the area’s biggest fairs, it attracts about 15,000 visitors each year. Big Boy’s Main Street Cook-Off NOV. 9, THIBODAUX
