Real Talk: Fantasy Label Draft ‘18
Six years ago, the Fantasy Label Draft was created as a lighthearted way for radio pros to chat about artists and label execs. This year, things got a lot. more. serious. From an almost unhealthy obsession with beer and possible expansion of the David Friedman Rule, to data-heavy analysis from erstwhile co-commissioner Gregg Swedberg, 2018 is highstakes and no-holds-barred. Read on. First, the team owners in their (randomly assigned) draft order: WNCY/Green Bay’s Charli McKenzie, KMLE/Phoenix’s Alana Lynn, WEBG/Chicago’s Lance Houston, Gregg Swedberg WNSH/New York’s John Foxx, KFRG/Riverside’s Scott Ward and KWJJ/Portland’s Toni Marie. Until now, scoring has come down to the highly scientific and proprietary CET process, which stands for “Chuck’s Eyeball Test.” Last year however, noted iHeart/Minneapolis station exec and radio quant/guru Swedberg began questioning the methodology. Despite his heresy, the proposed refinements (more on that later) contributed to and confirmed the decision regarding 2017’s winner: WIL/St. Louis’ Danny Montana with Taylor Swift, Sam Hunt, Old Dominion, Kane Brown, Scott Borchetta and Steve Hodges. As Swedberg noted, even Montana’s long shot pick of Swift semipanned out. No, she didn’t jump back over the fence into country as he hoped, but she did win a CMA award for Song of the Year (“Better Man”). See that draft here. And now, on with 2018. (continued on page 5)

NSHoF 2018 Inductee: Ronnie Dunn
Spotlighting one inductee each week leading up to the Oct. 28 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala begins with Ronnie Dunn. Best known as half of the most successful duo in country music history, he got started gigging in Oklahoma clubs where the songs he wrote went to become chart-topping country classics – among them “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” “Neon Moon,” “Hard Workin’ Man” and “She Used To Be Mine.” I became a songwriter out of necessity. I moved from Texas to Oklahoma in the ‘80s in Ronnie Dunn lieu of coming to Nashville, because Nashville really intimidated me. Tulsa had a thriving music community at the time. I realized early on that nothing was going to happen unless

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Anthony Olympia and Brent Rupard from Broken Bow’s Everette discuss their most influential music: 1. Keith Urban: At the time I saw him, I wasn’t listening to much modern Country ... but three chords into Keith’s set, I was converted! I’m a guitar player, Everette and Keith is great guitar player. He was speaking the same language, just a different vocabulary. (AO) 2. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: I heard “Crawling Back To You” off Petty’s Wildflowers and it sent me into an obsession. I dug into all of the Heartbreakers and Petty solo stuff like an insane person. (BR) 3. Alison Krauss and Union Station: They are perfection. Their live album moved parts of my soul I didn’t even know existed. I went to see them with my dad and he had his hands up in the air, crying. Their music is a spiritual experience. (BR) 4. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats: Understated production and great singing and playing. The crowd stood, danced and sang along the whole time. (AO) 5. Brad Paisley: His live show is electric. His albums are a blast and musically top shelf. He sets the bar, especially with Mud On The Tires. I’ll never get enough. (AO) • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Bruce Springsteen. I know that is sacrilegious as an American. I will at some point. (BR) • “Important” music you just don’t get: Folk music. The vocals sounded weird and the lyrics were just too abstract for a young guy. When I got older I fell in love with John Prine. It suddenly clicked with me and I wore out his records. (BR) • An album you listened to incessantly: Alan Jackson’s Good Time. At the time I’d been diving into a lot of Brent Mason guitar stuff, and he’s all over Alan’s recordings. His songs always warm my soul back up when it feels like there’s been nothing but cold rain. (AO) • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Friends” by Francis and the Lights w/Bon Iver and Kanye West. For inspiration, I listened to it in producer Zach Crowell’s studio with him and Sam Hunt before I played guitar on “Downtown’s Dead.” The lyrics contain a message we all need today! (AO) • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m a sucker for a good love song, from Phil Collins’ “Groovy Kind Of Love” to Boyz II Men’s “On Bended Knee.” (BR)

I had the right songs. It was during the Urban Cowboy era and we had a ton of places to play. I landed the house band gig in this place called Duke’s Country. We had a great crowd and were opening for everybody who was coming through – Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, George Jones. I remember the day I realized, “I have to stop talking about being a songwriter, sit down and actually write. How do I do this?” I studied the radio. I realized it’s a four-line verse, four-line chorus, verse, chorus, lead ride, chorus out. That’s the formula I learned to write by. I also knew from playing clubs on a steady basis that it has to have a good beat and you need to be able to dance to it. It was pretty primal. That’s where “Boot Scootin’” came from. It wasn’t written as a line dance at all. It was written as a straight up two-step song. We’d sneak original songs in with the cover songs. One time, right after I played it, someone came up and asked if we would play it again later in the night. I thought, “I may be onto something.” Little things like that helped prod me on. Once I shut down for 10 days. Didn’t come out of the house. I wrote, wrote, wrote. Out of that 10-day session I had several songs that later became No. 1 songs for Brooks & Dunn. It was a good indicator that writing was going to be an integral part of what I was going to do. I won the Marlboro Talent Roundup in 1988 with some Tulsa buddies who later became the band The Tractors. They’d actually entered my name [in the contest] with some songs I’d written. A year later, I got a call from [former Arista Nashville head] Tim DuBois. He was just starting the label and had heard “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and “Neon Moon.” He came to Oklahoma and said, “I’ve never told anybody to do this before, but I’m serious – I would urge you strongly to move to Nashville.” When it came time to do the first Brooks & Dunn record, I of course pushed to get “Boot Scootin’” on there. “Neon Moon,” too. There was a little bit of pushback. Some of the guys involved wanted us to do newer songs – songs that hadn’t already been written. There was a little bit of competition all of a sudden right off the bat. The other guys were trying to get their songs on the record, too. But I was able to get those two songs on there. Bada boom, off we go. I have a favorite guitar that I’ve written most of the songs on. I keep that laying around in a chair. It’s always handy. It’s a Gibson Dreadnought. I don’t know the model. I should. It’s been abused and rebuilt. I keep it handy all the time. Not in a case, so I can just reach over and grab it. It sings to me for some reason. It’s about the action on it, how it works and how it feels. I think su-

perstition plays a part in it, too. “I wrote so-and-so on this guitar; let’s see if it’ll cough up another one.” My favorite memory of getting a song cut was when Reba was doing a duets record, singing with Don Henley, Justin Timberlake. She said, “I want you to do a duet with me, but the kicker is you have to write the song.” I wrote “Does The Wind Still Blow In Oklahoma.” It was a song about her; the Oklahoma cowgirl moving to Hollywood. It was personal and we could both relate to what I was saying, coming from Oklahoma at the same time. That was an all-time favorite for me. George Strait never called to ask me to write him a song (laughs). But he did pitch me one a few weeks ago. He called and said his son Bubba had written this really good song. Not everybody gets a call from George Strait saying, “Hey, I want you to cut a song.” I’ll hang my hat on that one. Going into the Hall of Fame means the world to me. I got all the kudos I think you could get from those other two jobs, performing and singing. This takes care of the songwriting end of it. My three-dimensional career is covered. –Wendy Newcomer

Chart Chat
Congrats again to Luke Bryan, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman and the Capitol promotion staff on notching a second week at No. 1 with “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset.” The song is the third consecutive chart-topper from What Makes You Country. Songwriters are Zach Crowell, Ryan Hurd and Chase McGill. And kudos to Young and the crew on landing 52 adds on Carrie Underwood’s “Love Wins,” topping this week’s board.

Skip this if you know the drill: Each team owner selects six players: Male, Female, Duo/Group, Rookie, Label President and VP/Promotion. The six-round draft snakes like a fantasy football draft and owners can fill their slots in any order they choose when their pick comes up. Rookie is defined as any artist who has never had a No. 1; label execs can be anyone the team owner chooses. Recap: Team owners had different draft prep approaches. For McKenzie, it was pre-gaming with beer ... two days ahead of the draft. Lynn sought emotional support: “My therapist just asked why I’m checking my phone so much.” Houston was on the McKenzie diet: “My only compliant is that the draft went so fast I didn’t have an opportunity to finish my first beer. I was promised there would be more drinking!” This year’s ownership group wasn’t playing around, as when one owner took too long to make their pick. “Dead air!” Marie yelled. “Someone push a damn button already!” When Houston lost track of who was on the clock, Ward chimed, “Houston, you have a problem?” Last year’s assertion that any owner who picks a label exec previously taken will instead receive David Friedman by default was almost extended to artist picks. More than a few owners made the dreaded off-the-board selection. Houston proposed an alternate consequence: “You could just have him call you four times a week.”

Foxx: “I spoke to Friedman this morning.” Ward, minutes later: “I kid you not, he just left me a voicemail.”

Even during the draft, owners agreed Luke Combs was worthy of his first round pick. “I have been listening to his deluxe album over and over and I’m hooked,” Houston said. “Can’t wait to see what goodies he has in store for us on the next one!” Toni Marie Discussion veered into style after McKenzie chose UMGN’s Schuler as her VP/Promotion. “If he wasn’t gay, we’d have a romance, I know it,” she said. Added Houston, “Ha! I don’t know if you could deal with his fashion sense.” McKenzie replied, “Even dressed like a wannabe cowboy from Toy Story, he is adorable.” Lynn interjected, “While y’all were grabbing fashion advice from Schuler, I was picking Group of the Year Old Dominion!”
Page 7
Lynn also had thoughts on the team owner from Oregon. “I was happy to see Toni Marie settling in quite well to her new surroundings in Portland,” she said. “Shocked she didn’t pick Cheech & Chong for Duo/Group, but she chose Midland, so close enough.” Marie was more focused on the ones that got away. “I did pretty well considering I got robbed on Luke Combs and Ashley McBryde,” she says. “I thought Alana and I were cool, but losing Ashley hurt.” Foxx cheered his “well rounded leadership team and roster,” seeing “no real ceiling” on the opportunities ahead for his artists. “Interesting that Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean were left on the table,” he noted. “I almost grabbed Aldean. And such a tough decision between Kane Brown and Cole Swindell. Cole’s album is ridiculous!” Other than his own, Houston liked Ward’s team. “Scott definitely has a solid lineup. Thomas Rhett and Carrie Underwood are going to have explosive 2019s with new albums and tours.” Lynn agreed. “Scott Ward seemed to pull out a decent label,” she said. “I mean, between driving to-and-from soccer practices in his minivan and doing long walks around the mall to break in his New Balance, he had some time to plan. Ward wins the day for #DadJokes.” Also agreeing? Ward. “Far and away, I have the strongest label,” he said. “You can tell that the other owners were picking their favorite artists or sentimental favorites and not really drafting for strength of roster. Weak!” He then made another curious point: “My only complaint is all these league initiatives, like the ridiculous ‘On The Bench’ program. How am I supposed to draft all these players the league mandates and run my own team? I only have so many roster spots!” Wait, what are we talking about here? Finally, Houston had a suggestion. “A points system would be cool,” he said. “See how the teams stack up at the end of the year.” Enter Swedberg with data points including “total chart positions, number of CMA and ACM awards (x5), single sales (/100,000), 40 points for a No. 1, 39 for a No. 2, etc. down to position No. 40 (/5).” His formula for label executives requires calculus, but he does have recommendations for future team owners: “Try to pick record people who oversee multiple labels, and pick actual label heads for both slots unless Chuck is paying close attention (he nods off during the draft). And if you don’t get off at least five cheap shots at your competitors, you aren’t trying hard enough. All this advice is free to you from someone who didn’t win.” –Chuck Aly
