Part Two: Route To Healing

As detailed last week, the country community’s response in the days following the Route 91 Harvest festival evolved over the ensuing weeks and months. Country radio remained and remains a hub, though survivors have increasingly taken the task of healing and building community on themselves. “The biggest thing is the strength you see from listeners who were there,” says KKGO/Los Angeles Station Manager/PD Michael Levine. “There is an instant connection and people came together so quickly. So much strength has been found through this.” Social media played a big part. “After the first week we had mostly moved away from conversation about Las Vegas on the air,” Levine says. “Bringing up a tragic event is difficult. Some people want to move on, some want to talk about it. So social media became the outlet for ongoing interaction about the festival.” Mental and emotional health expert Miles Adcox (see next story) applauds the direct connections afforded online. “Don’t wait on the counseling or mental health community to facilitate, because often support comes best peer-to-peer,” he says. “There will be instances where counseling, therapy, help from a professional are definitely called for, and I encourage and support that too.” United State: Some responses were a bit more old-school, as KFRG/Riverside PD Scott Ward recounts. “One of our contest regulars, a good guy, one of the first things he did when he got home was come down to the station and put a letter up in our lobby, which our GM approved. It basically said, if you want to talk to somebody, call me.” “That’s just one example of what we’ve seen over the past two months,” Ward continues. “There have been a lot of people coming together for fundraisers. You see them putting an arm around complete strangers.” “We see them in Vegas Strong Survivor shirts at our events,” says KCYE/Las Vegas personality Ransom Garcia. “They want to talk and we listen. They go on Facebook and make plans to get together. We have a close-knit country family.” The station has moved forward with weekly Monday and Thursday night events at Gilley’s, featured 30 days of good news on-air and (continued on page 5)

Steps To Healing

Onsite CEO/Owner Miles Adcox sees the country community’s response to Route 91 in a very positive light. Adcox led a trauma discussion in Nashville the week after the tragedy, and he’s worked directly with many survivors. He’ll also be a featured speaker at CRS 2018. “I’ve been really impressed with how the Miles Adcox industry stepped up in support of the people who were lost and in support of each other,” he says. “The Nashville mental health community stepped up and the counseling MGM pulled together was a huge effort.” Going forward, Adcox says, “If I’m in a leadership role, I’m going to lead by example and talk about my experience. We can give people permission to talk about it, [not just] move on, wrap it up in a bow and say we’ve dealt with it.” Specifically, he points to three keys: connect, empathize and engage. “We all have a wide range of emotions,” he says. “Unfortunately, we don’t really honor the ones that don’t feel good. But the worst thing you can do in the grief or trauma recovery process is to disengage, disconnect, isolate, not talk about it. Every

instinct you have may be to disconnect. It’s too overwhelming, the emotions I’m feeling are too big, and I just need to box it up until I’m ready to deal with it later. There’s actually some research to support people who debrief or talk about what they experienced or how it’s impacting them early in the process versus those who don’t talk about it for years, and the emotional and physical impact it has on them down the road is pretty substantial.” Adcox urges anyone affected to be social and connect with others, even just one person. And those interactions don’t have to get into the worst memories of that day. “You don’t have to relive the details of what happened,” he says. “As a matter of fact, that can actually work against you. That’s one reason people shy away from [opening up]. It’s like, ‘I can’t talk about it.’ Well, you don’t have to talk about everything you saw, and as a matter of fact it’s not really healthy.” Rather than dive into what happened, he suggests focusing on the associated emotions. “Explore and take inventory of what you feel even if it feels uncomfortable,” he says. “The only way I’ve seen people genuinely willing to do that is if they have some sense of empathy and grace on their process, and other people’s. We’re all going to handle this differently based on other imprints in our life, so a lot of people that saw this, they didn’t even have to be there for it to bring up other loss. “Understanding the emotions that are coming up actually lowers your ambient stress level,” he continues. “Identifying and saying, ‘I’m feeling really sad today or I’m feeling really angry today’ – that alone can do wonders versus not talking about it at all. “So connect, empathize and engage in self-care. People think of selfcare as a spiritual practice like church, meditation or counseling, but it’s way broader than that. It’s exercise, music, writing or taking a walk.” That could even mean going to a concert. “Anywhere crowds gather is exposed at this point, so there’s going to be a level of hyper-sensitivity for a lot of people,” Adcox says. “People are

attempting to address the problem systemically, politically and through all the other channels, but there’s not much we can do. I don’t know that staying away from every risk is much different from not driving on the interstate. We’re exposed. “Now, if somebody has been extremely affected and is having panic attacks in crowds, they need to seek professional help. Don’t force yourself into an environment that adds more stress than value. But maybe we’re seeing so many people coming together from this event in such a loving and supportive way because music is medicine. It heals people. So don’t walk away from one of the most healing things on the planet. We’re going to have to gather for music to be able to touch us in the same way.” –Wendy Newcomer

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Rebel Engine VP Carli McLaughlin discusses her most influential music: 1. VH1 Divas Live concert, 1998: A gamechanger. As a New Yorker, my ears were untouched by country until I heard those three now-iconic words, “Let’s Go Girls.” That was it. I was determined to work in country music. Shania Twain’s crossover success changed my course. Carli 2. Rosanne Cash, Avalon Theatre: McLaughlin Rosanne was on tour playing The List record and when I found out the show was sold out, I figured it wasn’t meant to be. Distraught to miss the chemistry of Rosanne and Jon Leventhal onstage, I checked for tickets the day of the show to find out one ticket opened up ... in the front row. I drove the three hours and felt complete musical bliss. 3. Dixie Chicks, “Top Of The World”: This song absolutely blew my mind. One of those that marks a time in your life but continues to evolve as you gain more life experiences. Patty Griffin’s ability as a wordsmith served as a major catalyst in my appreciation for songwriting. 4. Willie Nelson’s 70th Birthday Party, Hammerstein Ballroom: Willie, Clapton, Ray Charles, Shania, Mellencamp, Chesney, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne, Steven Tyler ... enough said. 5. Stephanie Quayle’s Album Release, Ellen Theatre: Hearing Love The Way You See Me played start to finish with multiple chill bump moments (“Selfish” and “Ugly” had me holding back tears), a 2.5 hour meet and greet and that ah-ha moment of, “Holy moly, we’re building the career of a future country music icon here.’” • Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Embarrassed to say that I don’t own any Led Zeppelin but I wear out Robert Plant’s Band of Horses and Alison Krauss records. I have some catching up to do. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Green Day and Nirvana. I totally get that they are important in rock history, but it just never clicked for me. • An album you played incessantly: Miranda Lambert’s The Weight Of These Wings. Can’t get enough. And Lori McKenna’s The Bird & The Rifle. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons’ “Never Meant To Love You” from the Old Believers record. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I love a good show tune. The Rent Broadway soundtrack. I know every word. Reach McLaughlin here.

(continued from page 1) added a Thankful Thursdays feature allowing listeners to call in and express gratitude.” Adds KWNR/Las Vegas afternooner Big D, “Things are getting back to normal, although you really struggle with what normal is. I’m not afraid to be out in my own city, but driving past Mandalay Bay is weird.” What’s not weird is the support being shown. “The more we’re out at events, the more we are experiencing what I call unintentional healing,” he says. Caring On: Artists have been a big part of that healing. “Three days after Route 91 we had a show with LoCash at a local fair that had been on the books for months,” Ward says. “One of my first calls was to Preston [Brust] and Chris [Lucas] directly asking what they thought. Jason Aldean had canceled shows – this was not an easy call. Without hesitation they said they wanted to come, be with everyone, do something to help start some healing and bring a sense of community. We struggled with it a little bit. They huddled with their management, we talked to CBS corporate and decided to go forward. We repositioned it as a celebration of life and love, and it was very positive. The next morning I was convinced it had been the right thing to do.” Chris Young watched Aldean’s Route 91 performance from the stage, then performed in Fresno a week-and-a-half later. “It was an amazing night,” says KSKS MD Jody Jo Mize. “Our listeners are huge concert-goers. They’ve also put together fundraisers to help with medical bills and funeral expenses.” Back in Vegas, “The Coyote hosted a Luke Combs show on Nov. 27 for a capacity crowd at Gilley’s and the emotions were intense,” says KCYE PD Shawn Stevens. “Even Luke had a tough time dealing with returning so soon after, but he was happy that he did after experiencing the love the crowd showed him. It was a night of healing.” This Is Us: Included in the survivors, of course, are many from the business. “Everyone experiences and handles an event like that differently,” says Levine, who was onstage. “For me, it was important to get back to the station and get involved in my work. Figure out how our listeners and staff were affected. I didn’t take the time to reflect as maybe I should have.”

OFF THE RECORD: Jerrod Niemann Curb’s Jerrod Niemann puts an industry spin on the artist interview: One of my most memorable moments of radio tour was playing on a St. Patrick’s Day float. It was 19 degrees and I didn’t have a coat. A drunk guy in a kilt started a fire, so they pushed the parade back an hour. I could already feel my throat glands swelling Jerrod Niemann from standing in the cold. It was hard to play standing on a flatbed trailer, going up and down hills. There were people pointing at us and laughing, because they saw how hard it was for us to keep our balance. It was just part of the journey (laughs). My favorite person to travel with is my tour manager, Lee Gomila. He’s intelligent in common sense and intellect, which is a beautiful combination rarely gifted to anybody. Everywhere we go, things run so smoothly. He’s quadruple checked every detail. He’s an absolute treasure. Every time I’m at a truck stop I get cheap sunglasses. It’s funny – the ones you get for $6.99, you’ll have for three years. If you’re stupid and actually buy an expensive pair, they get smashed the next day. My new music is the next chapter in my life, a snapshot of where I am. My lyrics are stronger, and we’ve done our best to prop up those lyrics with the coolest vibes and sounds we could come up with. I hope everybody at radio will check it out. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately? I had a hay bale mailed to me from my hometown. I partnered with Corsair for some sunflower seed whiskey, so we got the ingredients from Liberal, Kansas and I had my friend from a farm I used to work on, send me a bale that they actually used in the aromatics in the whiskey process. I wish I’d written Conway Twitty’s “That’s My Job” (written by Gary Burr). That’s my favorite song. It hit me like a ton of bricks and made me realize the time we have on earth with everybody is precious. I have to have Homestyle Eggo Waffles with me on the road, every morning. After a tour, I take home whatever’s left. One time my wife said, “Why are there 12 boxes of Eggos in the freezer?” I’d love to be stuck in San Diego. I just have this affinity with it. I always feel at home. It’s a gorgeous place.

Page 7

“I was there with a girlfriend who was attending her first country show,” says Broken Bow’s Layna Bunt. “I was standing next to Michael Levine. [KUZZ/Bakersfield PD] Brent Michaels was there but left and was immediately in contact with me. He ended up taking me to the airport the next day.” Bunt has received an outpouring of support, but admits the adjustment was a struggle. “Getting back into work was a little difficult,” she says. “Going from this horrible event to calling (cheery voice), ‘Hey, can you play my record?!’ It seemed so insignificant. Broken Bow and BMG have been wonderful letting me have the space and time I needed. “I have talked to a counselor, which has been really helpful,” she continues. “I don’t tend toward being an anxious person, so it’s good to know all the feelings I’m experiencing are completely normal. It’s been a process, but it’s a healing one. We’ve all experienced losing someone, but this has given me a different perspective on how fragile life is.” Getting back to an Aldean show was important to her. “I went to see him in New Orleans because I didn’t want my season with him to end on that note,” Bunt says. “I was very nervous and went back and forth about it a lot, but it ended up being a great thing. Getting to be around and talk to everybody was so therapeutic. Now, do I like being in a crowd? No. I’ve gone to a few shows since and everybody is very supportive. It’s getting better and will just take time. I’m looking forward to starting fresh next year. “This has changed me, possibly for the better,” Bunt adds. “At least, that’s how I choose to look at it.” A New Season: Looking ahead, Route 91 is sure to play a part in future festival planning. In Bakersfield, the outdoor event schedule was over by Oct. 1, and Michaels notes, “We haven’t seen any local effects [at the Crystal Palace] as far as attendance. But we have had discussions about safety and emergency plans for upcoming events for listeners and staff.” “Making sure our employees and listeners are in secure and healthy environments has always been of the utmost importance,” Levine says. “When it’s not our event, our options are limited, but the best strategy is to find good partners. Live Nation has always been a wonderful partner, as is Stagecoach.” Ward suggests, “Maybe there will be more screening and we’ll be safer. Maybe 2018 is a good year to go to an outdoor event.” –Chuck Aly, Paul Williams, Wendy Newcomer CAC
