The student’s day began with greetings from Joseph Smith, President of Student Organization, Inc., and Kean University Vice-President for Student Affairs, Janice MurrayLaury. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: DAVID JOSEPH David Joseph is similar to the thousands of New Jerseyans that make the commute to and from work in New York City. Cramped train rides and long hours at the job are part of the daily routine. However, there is one major difference. Unlike the majority of his fellow commuters, David is not getting paid, at least not in the traditional sense. What David is receiving is far more valuable than money. He is beginning to realize that his dream of a career in the entertainment industry is well within his grasp. As an intern with Black Entertainment Television, David works at least forty hours per week on the daily show Rap City. Although BET asks their interns to work three days per week, David volunteered to work five. No pay? No problem. David explains, “Some might complain about not getting paid, but not me. The time I spend working at BET is valuable to me in other ways, I’m using all of this time to learn as much as I can about the entertainment industry.” Even during that rare occurrence of ‘down time’ on the job, David is still working hard. “If I complete my work, I’ll stick my head into another department and ask them if I can learn what they do.” The internship has also opened his eyes to many careers that he did not know existed. “Since I was young, I always wanted to work in the entertainment industry. Back then I saw myself in the spotlight, but after seeing what artists have to go through, I might want to work behind the scenes.” Joseph, a senior Broadcast Communications/Marketing major is also heavily involved on campus. He serves as a Class of 2004 Representative with Student Organization, Inc. and is also the Public Relations Director for Vogue, the group that puts on the annual fashion show on campus. David credits Kean University with opening the door for

him to enter into the entertainment field. “Kean has so many resources available to students wishing to do internships in this industry. There are already established connections with BET. MTV, CBS, and many others.” David also cites the University’s proximity to New York City as one of the reasons he calls Kean “the best school in New Jersey for someone that is interested in a career in the broadcasting industry.” David also notes the many Kean Alumni he crosses paths with on his journey. “I work closely with Earl Jordan, a graduate of Kean who is currently the Associate Producer of BET’s popular show ‘106 & Park’. I also have met Erik Parker, another Kean alum who serves as Music Editor at Vibe Magazine. I don’t think I would have had this opportunity without Kean.” David would love if BET offered him a job upon completion of his internship but said it’s not the motivation for his hard work. “Whatever you put into something is what you get out of it. Regardless of whether or not I am offered a job, this experience has been invaluable to me. The people at BET have treated me great and I know that I will be able to apply the skills that I have learned here in the future.”
