To apply for a parking decal, students must complete an online registration form which can be accessed at http://permits.kean.edu. Decals are issued at no cost and can be picked up within 48 hours of registering online at the Office of Student Accounting on the third floor of the Administration Building; students will be emailed by the university when the decal is ready. Students must be registered in classes and fulfill all financial obligations before a parking decal is issued. Freshmen resident students need approval from the Office of Residential Student Services (RSS) to obtain a decal as they are generally not permitted to bring vehicles on campus. Students can also apply online for additional or replacement decals through the parking permit website and selecting the “Add” option. Students should email the Parking Services Unit if a decal is lost or stolen. If a student transfers registration to another vehicle or purchases a new vehicle, a new decal must be requested by the student.
Parking Violations
Vehicles parked on campus without a properly displayed decal are subject to a parking fine issued by the Kean University Department of Public Safety and Police. Fines must be paid or appealed within 15 days from the date the fine was issued in order to avoid a late fee of $50. If a fine is not paid or appealed within 15 days, a follow up notification will be sent by email. Late fees are assessed for each violation notice. More information on violations and appeals can be found within the Violations and Appeals page of the Kean website.
Parking Lots
There are various parking lots available throughout campus with parking spots designated for students, faculty and staff. Designated parking spots are indicated by colored lines. Students must park within parking spaces with white lines; faculty or staff, with faculty and staff parking decals, are permitted to park in spaces with white or yellow lines. Parking for visitors is available in front of the Administration Building; this parking area is reserved solely for visitors. Visitors must check in with the posted security officer during business hours. To park in reserved spaces such as handicapped or state parking areas, vehicles must display the proper plates in addition to the parking decal. Drivers with a

The most common challenge facing incoming students is becoming familiar with campus life and the resources provided by the university. Caguana found that counselors were more than willing to help her become part of the Kean Community. The encouragement from counselors led her to become more involved with campus activities and student organizations, and she is now a member of the Mu Sigma Upsilon sorority. The best advice she received was to not hesitate to ask for assistance. “There are a lot of resources and people willing to help [you] on campus,” Caguana said. “Asking questions will guide you to the right person or department, and get you the answers you’re looking for.” Amber McEachin, a senior English major, also encourages incoming students to become involved in

Social Injustice Seen Through Art

Kean Day is approaching and organizations and departments are ready to meet you

here is a new exhibit in town and it is like none other. From HurtJohn comes the exhibit Movement, created by former Kean University student John Hurtado. This exhibit will explore Black Lives Matter and social justice movements. The exhibit will explore some of the most prominent homicides in the United States which includes a representation of the Trayvon Martin case in 2012. Sean Hassett created the representation titled ‘In Shattered Dreams,’ and replaces Martin’s face with a shattered mirror so viewers can reflect on the life that was lost. Another piece is of a little boy pieced together by ripped up lottery tickets created by artist Jo-El Lopez. This piece represents the atrocities committed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“We want people to go in there and have an emotional connection to what is going on and is relevant currently in our world daily,” comments Hurtado. Hurtado also comments that he wanted to bring this exhibit to Kean University because of its rich diversity. Paintings and sculptures of African-Americans who helped with the advancement of social justice will also be present at the exhibit. Hurtado explains the reason behind his
very year, at the start of the fall semester, the Miron Student Center Operations and Event Management office hosts Kean Day, an event where students can learn more about the student services offered and the organizations and clubs on campus. This year, Kean Day will be held on Friday, September 9, 2016, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. all along Cougar Walk stretching from Harwood Arena to Wilkins Theatre with check-in and registration on the Miron Student Center patio. “Kean Day is an event that exposes new students to everything that Kean has to offer,” Kerrin Lyles, director of the Miron Student Center Operations and Event Management office says. Kean Day began in 1982 as a campus-wide festival and “it is a place where all students, freshmen and upperclassmen have the opportunity to check out clubs they may have an interest in and meet their peers,” Lyles comments. Along with the many organizations and departments present, Kean Day will also include activities and different vendors for everyone to enjoy. Come attend Kean Day and see how you can enhance your collegiate experience, meet new people and learn about your university. In the event of rain or inclement weather, Kean Day will be held the following Friday on September 16, 2016, also from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Cougar Walk.

I was always a writer deep down, but I had nowhere to express my writing. Kean’s programs and its students allowed me to become the person I am today, and ultimately that created a gallery exhibition at Kean.”

ean Identification Cards (ID) play an integral role in the university, and are issued to each active and registered student. Kean University ID cards are needed to access buildings and resources on campus such as the residence halls, the library, computer labs and the fitness centers. Students are required to have an ID card as it identifies each student as a member of the Kean community. Students can obtain an ID from the ID Card office located within the Office of Student Accounting on the third floor of the Administration Building. Students must present a legal form of photo identification (driver’s license, state ID, passport or military ID) in order to receive an ID card. The first card issued is free of charge, but replacement cards are subject to a $15 fee. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the card and secure it at all times. IDs are non-transferable, and will be confiscated if used by someone other than the cardholder. Disciplinary action may be taken against students that attempt to share his or her ID with others. In addition to granting access to buildings on campus, student IDs can also be used to purchase flex plans, meals, or validate student status when buying discounted student tickets for university events. Students IDs are also required to access cougar dollars. Cougar dollars are funds added to a student’s account which can be used to make purchases at the Kean University Bookstore, Ocean County Bookstore and Union Campus food outlets, including Starbucks and the Cougars' Den. Students may also use cougar dollars at the following off-campus restaurants: Rock ‘N’ Joes, Bonchon Chicken, Applebee’s, Tropicana Diner and Koki Japanese Buffet.

Need Some Quiet Study Time? Here are areas where students can study alone or in a group Gaelle Gilles

tudying in the cafeteria can be quite distracting because of all the noise that goes on in there. There are plenty of study rooms and lounges on campus that students can go to. Below are the many study rooms and lounges students can choose from:
Nancy Thompson Library
There are many places here for students to study. The first floor is filled with desks for students to either study alone or study in groups. Some desks have computers on them for anyone in need of a computer to write a paper. There is also a student-only computer lab where students can print documents with no cost (although there is a limit to how many pages students can print a semester). Each student is given $30 to their account and to print one page costs 10 cents. So with that cost, students can print up to 300 pages per semester.
Students can also go to the second and third floors of the library to study. Those floors are quieter and have more study areas than the first floor. The second and third floors have single person desks for those who want to study alone and larger desks for those who want to study in a group. The third floor also has study rooms that students can reserve for oneself or for a group. All room reservations are made through the circulation desk on the first floor of the library. Students will need their student identification card (I.D.) in order to reserve a room.
Hutchinson Student Organization Study Lounge
This study lounge is great for commuter students since it isn’t too far from the parking lot. It is also great for students who just want to get a quick study session in before class. The study room is located on the first floor of Hutchison, room J-11.

plan selected by a student. Options include meal plans suited for freshmen, upperclassmen, resident students or commuter students. For more information on flex plans, meal plans or how to add cougar dollars to a student account, please visit the Flex and Meal Plans page within the Student Accounting website. Students can also earn cougar dollars by enrolling in select weekend classes during the fall and spring semesters. Students can earn $50 per credit for Friday classes that start after 3:30 p.m. and for Saturday classes that start before noon. For Saturday classes that start after noon, students can earn $100 per credit. For more information on students IDs and cougar dollars, please contact the Office of Student Accounting by email at stuactg@kean. edu or by phone at (908)-737-3240.
