here’s two surefire ways to know that there’s a party going on in the Cougar’s Den. One is the fact that it’s Wednesday night and the other is if you hear a large group of people chanting “GO WHITE BOY” all the way from the cafeteria. Of course, they were cheering for the headlining comedian, Mark DeMayo, who performed at the Comedy Show last Wednesday night. Along with the rest of the entertaining events that make up the brand new “Psyched About Wednesdays” program at Kean, the comedy show was a great success. ’d like to feel that I am responsible for Kean University’s serenity. Although I am an object I deserve merit for much of the tranquility that is amongst the students. I’m taller than any person that steps foot on KU’s campus however I’m smaller than all of the academic buildings. I don’t get along with any of the academic buildings because we’re so far apart. I don’t have elevators or computers inside me so those guys think they are so much better than me. They’re just jealous because students actually take the time out to visit me although some of them engrave their initials in my flesh; I see it has affection opposed to mutilation. I enjoy having couples share kisses underneath my peak. Different sororities and fraternities have mini conferences within me. When it rains I do get soaked and few want to pay me any attention. All through the winter months I’m merely glanced at. I don’t get the adoration that I normally would during the warm spring, summer, and early fall months. I just want KU to appreciate me more. I want everyone to realize that I was placed on the campus for a reason. I’m not just something that you sit in, I’m something that you relax in, and concentrate in. I was made to spark deeper intellect within people because I’m something so peaceful and calming. I help KU go round get the point? To find out what I am log onto www.cougarsbyte.com

over the course of an entire year. He calls this work “The Fourth of July,” because he began it on that day in 1993 and created the last piece on July 4, 1994—one year and 366 prints later. Each woodcut tells about something that happened to him that day. It’s like a pictorial diary, and sometimes a simple, striking image can speak volumes. For instance, one day his woodcut consisted of a lone wooden chair, stark and still; it captures the feeling of loneliness and boredom.

Kean University’s Objects Speak Out

“Other than the scale and time commitment, this series was different than anything else I had ever attempted in one important way—I had no idea what it would look like in the end. I had chosen a rigid format, but I could not know what the prints would depict even one day in the future, not to mention in 365 days. Nor could I even predict the look of the prints made a year away, as my drawing/cutting style might change over that time. The greatest event of my life might have occurred in that year, or the worst. But the really good thing was that I had no format concerns,” explains Paul. “Sometimes having a lot of structure gives you a lot of freedom. I didn’t have to deal with the decisions about color versus black & white, horizontal versus vertical, or size. It gave me the opportunity to focus instead on content, composition, and approach.” What an intriguing concept—this is a great way to force yourself to think creatively. He adds, “I purposely made a lot of these not as specific as I could have, so people could project their own experiences onto them, and make it something they could relate to. One of the things I wanted was for

Angela M. Barrett, sophomore Communications major, is a member of The Cougar’s Byte staff.

people to be able to look at it and experience it in their own way.” It was great fun to speak with Paul; he has fascinating stories about each image. Paul reminds us, “I believe that if we take the time to look at the world around us, and our daily routine, we are likely to find some interesting things.” The exhibit also features another personal diary piece about his experience of September 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center was under attack. The panels in this woodcut alternate between images of a clock showing the time, and the buildings (or what was left of them). It’s a very moving and somber piece of art. Paul Bonelli’s work is on display in the gallery at the Nancy Thompson Library until October 23. Don’t worry about gallery hours; the work is clearly visible through the glass, and it’s not something you want to miss—so just duck into the library when you’re passing by—you will be amazed! Miss New Jersey By Jen Bissu, Senior Feature Editor

ure, we’ve always known that Kean is home to many beautiful faces and personalities…but now we have official proof! One of our students, senior English & Secondary Education major Kristin Caccio, will compete in the Miss New Jersey USA pageant next week! Kristin declares, “I strongly believe that with anything you want to do with your life, if you take the steps to get there, you will most likely achieve it. People I’ve met at Kean taught me a lot about leadership and self-empowerment, and motivated me to step up to challenges.” And she has plenty of opportunity to use the leadership skills she’s learned—Kristin is the Vice President of her sorority, Nu Delta Sigma! “It’s an awesome experience,” she says with a smile. ”I’m with a great group of girls, taking an active stance in a leadership position, and I’m surrounded by wonderful, loving people that I care about and who care about me.” Now, in her senior year, she’s going to be a finalist in one of the most prestigious pageants. Kristin makes the process sound so simple: she sent in head shot photos, filled out a couple forms, got a call for an interview, and later learned that she was in! Although she hasn’t done any pageants or modeling before, she’s had experience with being in the spotlight—Kristin spent 12 years as a competitive dancer!

see that everything happens for a reason.” She has attended acting classes at the John Robert Powers Agency, the TVI Actors Studio, and the Ripley Grier Studio, in the interest of pursuing her future goals: one of her lifelong ambitions is to become a film actress. In addition, Kristin wants to open her own holistic practice on the side; she’s already certified in Reiki, and plans to obtain her hypnotherapy certification. Kristin is very big on charity and community service. “I’m a humanitarian,” she says, “but I’m also a performer, so I want my future career to integrate the two.”

In fact, Kristin can be described as a “renaissance woman”—she has quite an impressive array of interests and talents. “I want to put my hand into everything,” she says—and she certainly does a good job of that! “I’m big into writing,” Kristin reveals. “I keep a public diary online, where I write about my experiences with day-to-day events…life can be very symbolic—usually nothing is at face value. If you look deeper, you

As for her approaching big day—the Miss New Jersey USA 2006 Pageant—Kristin says, “I’m really excited! I’m not sure what to expect but whatever happens, I’ll just appreciate having this experience. I know this isn’t the top, it’s like a stepping stone to lead me to greater things. Being a finalist for Miss New Jersey is just one of the many experiences that decorates my life.” Kristin has a great deal of insight for someone so young. She offers these wise parting words: “Anything you feel drawn to is meant for you. Fear is just an illusion, only love is real.” Jen Bissu, graduate Fine Art Education major, is a member of The Cougar’s Byte staff.

Sigma Lambda Beta and Theta Phi Alpha

n Wednesday, October 26, 2005, in the University Center Little Theatre during college hour from 3:30-4:50pm, Sigma Lambda Beta and Theta Phi Alpha are teaming up again for a workshop focusing on Finance and Real Estate. This is Sigma Lambda Beta’s and Theta Phi Alpha’s second time teaming up to do a workshop together. Last year the fraternity and sorority did a workshop on Resume writing with a guest speaker from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Carlos Quiste who is also a member of Sigma Lambda Beta. With a turn out of about 35 people, the workshop held in the Greek Lounge had a good turn out, considering another large organization was having its annual event across the hall in the Little Theatre “It was our first time putting on a workshop and we didn’t realize that another big event was going on but I was pleased to see that so many people still came out to our workshop”, said CeCe Christmas Alumni of Theta Phi Alpha Sorority, Inc.

This year the two organizations have played

it smart by making the switch to college hour and also a room change to hold more people. They hope the Finance and Real Estate workshop will give awareness to the entire Kean community not to mention business and marketing majors will be able to learn more about their field of choice. There will also be a guest speaker this year, Guillermo Argote who graduated from Kean University in 2001 with a degree in Management Science. “This workshop will help students who are interested in the aspects of Real Estate but aren’t sure on how to go about it. There’s a lot of information dealing with property and management that isn’t just given to you”, commented Joao DeOliveria President of Sigma Lambda Beta. If your major pertains to any aspect of Finance or Real Estate this workshop will be good way to keep yourself abreast on your field.

Time To See NYC3 By Jen Rubino, Staff Writer

T

he NYC3 Photo Exhibit is now on display in the Center for Academic Success Gallery. The photos reveal three different perspectives of New York City, each one the unique vision of a photographer’s eye. Curator Neil Tetkowski presents the work of Dr. Vivian Rodriguez, vice chair of the Kean Board of Trustees, Dr. Donald Lokuta, professor of Visual and Performing Arts, and Robert Cole, Vice President for University Relations.

The sexy and fun photographs of Robert Cole feature a variety of themes and subjects. Some of his work contains patriotism, which inspired thoughts of 9/11. These memories can enhance the appreciation of New York City. His photograph “Sunday Times Magazine” features a man sitting on the grass engaged in a magazine with Bin Laden on the cover. His other photograph, “Patriot Act” is silly and insightful at the same time. A man is shown wearing American flag clothing, including a fanny pack of red, white and blue.

NYC NYC

Chinatown and Soho are the featured settings for Dr. Vivian Rodriguez’s photographs. These are her favorite areas of New York City. In her work, she captures the complexity of city life. Specifically noted for color, Dr. Rodriguez embraces the reflections of New York City as opposed to suburban areas where expression is kept to a minimum. Her multi layered images reveal the dimensions of the city. Another characteristic of her work is that it seems recognizable, as if you had seen these images somewhere before.

Dr. Donald Lokuta’s work is in black and white. The photos are frozen images from a Hi-8 videotape. He photographs the moments that most eyes seem to miss. Dr. Lokuta considers his work to be of the unseen. “Not the expected pose, but the unexpected gesture between poses-the emotional response caught in a moment off guard. A single perfect smile and noble pose is not who we really are when no one is looking-when our real humanity is unguarded,” said Dr. Lokuta. The selection of a moment in flux captures the subject as if they were looking through us, not at us. It provokes a feeling of alienation as his photos reveal a person’s more private moments. As a result, Dr. Lokuta is able to capture some interesting facial expressions.

a similar theme. The picture is literally just that- a smoke stack. Behind it is a building with an ad for gay.com on it. The ad is a picture of two male lovers wrapped in an American flag. Sexuality is a hot topic of Robert Cole’s work. In the photo titled “Carrie”, Sexy and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker’s pose on a T.V. screen suggests an image of sensuality. Another photo titled “Satisfaction” seems appropriate, especially due to the nature of Cole’s work. This particular photo was not sexual, but it contained ads for various concerts drawing your attention to The Rolling Stones.

While you still have time, make sure to check out the NYC3 Photo Exhibit. The photos will be on display until November 7th. The gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from 11:00am until 7:00pm and Fridays from 11:00am-3:00pm. This is an opportunity to see NYC like you’ve never seen it before.

Tune In To Television By Kaitlyn Davies, Staff Writer

W

hether it’s the news you watch in the morning with your cup of coffee or even the cartoons you still watch while getting dressed, television is a big part of a college student’s life. During some point in the day you will inevitably watch a television screen whether it’s out of pure boredom or you really must see that television show you made your schedule around. Let’s face it, we all watch it! So with the start of the fall semester here at Kean University, and just about everywhere else in the country, television’s new fall T.V. lineup also starts. There’s reality shows. They just keep coming back. Even though most people won’t like to admit – we’re all hooked on at least one! There’s something so captivating about seeing what other people will do just to have their 15 minutes of fame. There’s family dramas. Just about any problem imaginable is solved within an hour. It’s truly amazing how much bad luck the families in these dramas have. Every week something devastating and tragic happens to them! There’s sports. From billiards to basketball there’s something for everyone on television. You can watch soccer, basketball, and sumo wrestling all at the same time. Sports on television are getting to be a highlight for many people’s weeks. They plan their Monday nights around football, and their Saturday afternoons

around baseball. There’s famous police dramas. These are great to watch because you can really learn a lot from them. On some detective shows you can learn how to catch a criminal in just about an hour. Watching them is fun. As an audience member you know if they catch someone and the show still has 45 minutes to run that person is innocent because there’s still way to much time left. There’s comedies. Usually something is either funny or not. With comedies they are either really good or really bad. There’s no gray area for comedy. The comedies this year have some big shoes to fill and hard acts to follow but they just might be up to the challenge. There’s soap operas. The infamous storylines that keep people coming back day after day. The stories are so entertaining because the same person can die four times and come back the next week as someone’s long lost brother. The stories are sometimes repetitive but nevertheless completely entertaining! Finally, there’s award shows. They come on every now and then. Even though they tend to run long, they are usually filled with jokes, music acts, and the obvious – acceptance speeches. We all know that everyone practices in our mirrors hoping that someday we become famous, get to

walk up to the podium and thank everyone for their help in making our dreams come true! So, what does the Kean University student body like to watch? Jaclyn Weinberg, freshman Social Work major says,”One Life to Live is my favorite show because soap operas are hilarious to watch. The story lines are so pointless.” While Chrissy Davies, junior Art Education major says,”My favorite show is The Apprentice with The Donald! I just love watching, to see who’s going to hear those two dreaded words, You’re Fired!” Freshman Catherine Collins, Elementary Education major, says, “Friends is my favorite, it’s really funny!” and LeeLing Yee, junior advertising major prefers Will and Grace because “It’s funny and really random!” When asked what her favorite T.V. show is, Stacy Baker, junior

Elementary Education major says, “That 70’s Show is my favorite it’s weird and really funny!” James O’Connor, undecided freshman, says, “Sports Center is my favorite because I just like to watch sports.” Viral Sheth, undecided freshman, says, “I like Laguna Beach!” Finally Frank Tedesco, undecided freshman, says, “I like to watch sports any kind of sports!” There you have it. The surprising results indicate that Kean students enjoy a variety of television shows. There’s something out there for everyone. There are new shows and returning ones and some shows will get canceled after one episode and leave us wondering what they were thinking! So, what’s your favorite? Kaitlyn Davies, freshman Political Science major, is a member of The Cougar’s Byte staff.

nothing less than club-worthy, presented by resident DJ “Nix in the Mix”. In this special showcase of comedians, which was sponsored by Student Life and Leadership Development, there were three hilarious performers that had the audience in stitches all evening. Besides DeMayo, comedians Jonathan Martin and Hadiyah Robinson performed. Although new to Kean University, theses talented young performers are no stranger to the entertainment industry. They have all appeared on comedy showcases on television, and toured at colleges and comedy clubs all over the country. Though students were incredibly amused by Mark DeMayo’s antics, the Cougar’s Den exploded with laughter at Jonathan Martin’s rendition of the “Crocodile Man of the Discovery Channel” “Jonathan was definitely the funniest!” Ifeuko Igbinovia commented, as she watched the comedian impersonate all kinds of personalities and interact with the students in the audience. Hadiyah Robinson, one of the few female comedians that have visited Kean, got a great

response from the crowd as well, as she told jokes that a lot of the females could relate to. As the second night event in the “Psyched About Wednesdays” program, there was quite an impressive turnout – the campus police who were working the show had to make sure no one else entered after the show started since the Cougar’s Den had just about reached its capacity. So, next week, when you and your friends decide to come check out Casino Night, which is next week’s night event, make sure you come early! And don’t forget to come and participate in all the other great events offered on Wednesdays – from the bagel breakfast, lunchtime diversions to dance lessons and more!

CANDIDATES FOR PRESIDENT Scott Herman

Sarah Team Unity

My name is Scott Anthony Herman and I wish to be my Freshman Class President. I am an E.E.O student from Somerville, New Jersey. My major is business and my career objective is to construct my real-estate company. I am an outgoing person who likes to have fun but at the same time I am focused and determined to achieve my goals in life. I am the type of person that can get along with any other individual. The reason I want to be the President of my class is because I want to represent the freshman of Kean University the correct way. I am the most qualified for this position because I understand what is needed in life to succeed. I feel I could fulfill the expectation of President with hard work and dedication.

I don’t intend on leaving Kean without making a positive impact. I have always dreamed of being my class president. I refuse to be another person just walking by. I am a very determined hard worker, and will do what ever it takes to get the job done. In high school I was the year book club vice-president, the 2004-2005 Track Captain. I was very involved inside and outside of my classes and much more. I am willing to serve my freshmen class to the fullest. If I am elected as president there will not be any regrets. If you want to know more about me we can meet in person, then you can see the real me. I believe that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Effat Jabeen Five years ago I never thought I would be going to a University in the United States. I was born and raised in Pakistan. I moved to the US when I was in 9th grade. Despite the fact that I could not speak English at the time, I was desperate to get to know the culture and traditions. With the help of a friend of mine, I started participating in extra curricular activities to make connections with society. I have done a lot of community service by getting involved in clubs such as Future Health Career Club, where I participated in Non-Smoking Day, Breast-Cancer Awareness Week, and donating blood drive, Math Club, where I took part in math contest for all New Jersey High School Math Wiz. As a representative of my school’s National Honor Society, I have tutored my fellow students. My Peer Leadership class really helped me become a true leader and get involved in programs such as; tutoring at elementary and middle school and public speaking. Now, this is my time to take the opportunity, in return and honor those who helped me reach this peak by showing them my achievements.

et’s face it – we live in a very internet savvy society. From e-mails to texting to instant messages, it’s all about getting the point across in a quick and efficient manner. This especially goes for college students, regardless of age, who are so busy that they have no choice but to multitask. Communicating through email and instant message is a great way to conduct business in an orderly fashion as well as handle personal matters. A lot of people actually convey their messages better through the typed word since they can express themselves in an organized way. But lately, instant messages and emails have been getting bombarded with all kinds of internet jargon. We all know these abbreviations – “BRB, TTYL” and the ever popular “LOL” to indicated “laughing out loud” but where does all this short handing end when it comes to real-life writing?

the fact that you are typing “u” instead of “you” in your formal essays. It’s easy to slip up especially when you are writing emails. If you are sending out a resume or cover letter or typing anything for someone important, it looks really unprofessional to use any kind of abbreviations.

On the other hand, as Nicole said, all the online involvement does speed up people’s typing capabilities, which is great for knocking out those 10 page papers that professors love to assign. Getting familiar with the internet and keeping in contact with peers is great for communication skills as well as computer knowledge that many will need in the future. The key, ultimately, is to keep your personal online involvement separate from your academic or professional tasks.
