GREAT BRITISH BREKKIE Monday 9th – 15th February Winston’s Wish wants you, together with your family, friends or colleagues, to join us and help raise thousands of pounds in February 2015. This will help us to support even more bereaved children every year and continue to

expand our services to meet the increasing demand. Every 22 minutes in Britain a child is bereaved of a parent. We need to raise £2.4 million each year so we can continue to help as many of these children as possible. The money you are helping us raise will go towards services like our Helpline, allowing us to answer around 13,000 calls a year from parents, teachers and health care professionals who need advice and guidance or just someone to speak to. This is such a vital service and is often the first time the person has spoken to someone about their concerns for a bereaved child. From the 9-15th of February we are asking everyone to hold their own Great British Brekkie! Join in; help us raise much needed funds and let’s all revive the tradition of the Great British breakfast! Remember this can be anything from a traditional full English to a good ol’ cuppa and toast! Let your imagination get boiling! Where: your home, work or school. What: breakfast…think muesli, muffins or mango. Why not go fancy with a champagne breakfast for friends or take 10 to have a tea and toast moment with your colleagues. How much: it’s free to take part, we just ask that all your guests donate what they can! More info: www.greatbritishbrekkie.org.uk DEVIL MUD RUN Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd February

TRADITION, OPPORTUNITY AND DISCOVERY

Cheltenham Prep is one of the UK’s finest Prep Schools, welcoming children from Nursery to Year 8. Set in splendid 16-acre grounds, The Prep offers a dedicated Nursery and Pre-Prep, farm, Forest School and its very own boating lake, all right in the heart of Cheltenham. The Cheltenham Prep education combines traditional excellence with a modern outlook, embracing not only the academic studies but also co-curricular activities, never forgetting that children need time to play. Prep children benefit from Cheltenham College’s Chapel, university-standard science laboratories and sports facilities with astroturf pitches, playing fields and our 25m indoor swimming pool. Mr Jonathan Whybrow Headmaster: “At the centre of Cheltenham Prep’s success are those who make up our purposeful and caring community: our children, their parents and also our staff. There is no ‘Cheltenham Prep stereotype’. Opportunity and inclusivity is at the heart of all we do; we strive to unlock and maximize each child’s potential and talents, regardless of ability. With a very simple set of guidelines as to how to succeed (try your hardest, get involved, treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself), children thrive and flourish here.”

Interiors

Working at the Coast Following on from the December issue, Clive Burling returns to sunny Salcombe The brief; to revive a rather random selection of furniture, in a newly purchased, holiday home giving a more ‘lived in’ and coordinated feel to the house. My client was very pleased with the kitchen, especially the way the rather boring IKEA table and chairs were transformed with a rustic and nautical look, with drawer handles made with a couple of metres of rope from the local chandlery. Feeling pleased with myself but rather daunted that I still had 4 bedrooms and a sitting room to sort out, I had to tear myself away from the attractions of the glorious local scenery, fresh sea air and especially the fabulous South Sands boutique hotel, a place so suiting my own taste in décor; totally luxurious but comfortable and laid back at the same time. Having had afternoon tea there it was hard to imagine that there could be anywhere in the world I would rather be! Back to reality though and time to get to work. The pine beds, side tables and chest of drawers in the South facing twin room on the top floor really needed a wake up call! It used to make me smile when, as a photographer, people would ask me what sort of camera I used

After

Before

for a particular shot because the camera was just one, fairly minor, part of the whole process. Painting furniture is part of a process too, so it also makes me smile when I’m asked what sort of paint I use. The answer is, ‘it depends’. In other words the paint is important but paint alone is just one part of the processes to create the finished piece. I talked last month about texture, feel and context. In the case of this house I wanted it to feel like a home by the sea, a place to relax and at the same time reflect some of the wonderful local colours. I enjoy the versatility of china clay and chalk based paints, avoiding any kind of acrylic finish and love to mix both my own colours and different types of paint to create a particular finish. I spend a lot of time testing different mixes and will think nothing of putting smooth masonry and china clay paints together for instance, to create a particular effect. Well, back to the bedrooms. On the top floor, both rooms are bright, so I used my own concoction (let’s call it old white), which I sealed for durability and created a textured finish. To brighten things up I painted the wooden knobs light blue and the inside of the drawers a luscious sea green. My idea for the bunkroom made my client slightly nervous so I thought the best thing to do it was just get on with it, which I duly did! The slatted bunk beds with tongue and groove ends had to have the beach hut look – it just had to be done and I’m

relieved to report my client loved it. Finally, to the sitting room which is a stripped pine homage to the 1980’s. Up until the morning I started this room, I had no real idea what to do with the pine fire surround. Luckily inspiration was not far away - the sea! It’s down the road and with a room abound with yachting photographs, I set to it with my ‘old white’, soft wax, ‘sea green’, sanding blocks, wire wool, sealer and there it is. A seaside fireplace. I want to stay here now! To contact Clive Burling: Tel: 07788257914 Email: clive.burling@gmail.com To book ‘Fordlea’ in Salcombe: Contact Coast and Country Cottages www.coastandcountry.co.uk

The Bungalow Conversion Interior Designer Kelly James talks through a Bungalow Conversion PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOWPLAY

This property was damp and had been left to almost fall down. It was discovered as a one bedroom bungalow and lovingly converted into a three bedroomed family home. A large kitchen dining room extension has been added to the rear of the property taking in the south facing garden views; aluminum bi-fold doors open up to let the outside in. Concrete floors throughout give the feeling visually of cohesion and flow from room to room. Bespoke, concrete kitchen worktops, cherry wood clad ceilings and a cherry and black steel open staircase were all commissioned to create a personal and individual home. The architectural decision was made to create a corridor which draws your eye from the front door to the back of the property and pocket sliding doors were designed to provide a clear path which presents a light and welcoming view every time the front door is open. A combination of new and old furniture, white and black paint colours and a pop of colour here and there, keeps the property’s

bright and airy feel. A selection of personal family photography and fun artwork balances this home that is newly built but looks evolved. Renovating a home is all about making the property work for you by planning the way you use the home on a day to day basis. Incorporating small touches that make a huge difference include a well-placed window, to frame a favorite view and making a lighting plan to suit all times of day and every season. A lot of decisions need to be made very early on but is well worth the thought process and it would be lying not to mention a few sleepless nights! It is a process that some people do not want to repeat and others love and become serial renovators – this home will be enjoyed for a few years before the decision is made if the process will be repeated! As a designer this was the perfect project; a mix of building work, a lot of planning and fun quirky personal touches. Through the Garden Gate... Camilla Bassett-Smith our Cheltenham based media horticulturalist starts 2015 by opening the gate of a televisual delight... s we start a new year, a gate with a difference! My Grandmother had a large old wooden television in her Charlton Kings home for many years and in order to watch this, one had to slide across the wooden shutters. Well if the television programme is gardening and you’ll allow me a little artistic license, then these shutters are going to be my garden gate this month. “And what is beyond the gate?” I hear you cry with all the gusto of an eggnog filled extravaganza. Well, ‘The Great British Garden Revival’ on BBC2, is all geared up to fill your fancy with thoughts

of warmer days to come and the floral tapestry that will erupt over our glorious Gloucestershire. As Assistant Producer on Series 2 and based in Cheltenham, nobody was more pleased than I to feature a healthy splattering (or should that be scattering if we’re getting horticultural!) of gardens here in The Cotswolds. My first point of reference is the captivating Kiftsgate Court Gardens in Chipping Campden, where we spent a good few days firstly on a recce (no not the result of one too many pimms, but a pre-visit to weigh everything up). This was followed by a long summer’s day filming, where the evening before I had actually set fire to my A4 script at dinner

as it made polite conversation with the tea light. Reacting like a red-headed younger version of Basil Fawlty, my cries of “Fire, Fire!” doing little to diminish the flames, I was grateful to our quick thinking director who covered myself and neighbour in a pint of water. Anyway, enough of my spectacle making exploits! We were there to see their fabulous collection of peonies and I came away with a lasting impression of a beautiful family garden plus a rose called ‘Kiftsgate’ to plant at home in Prestbury. I’m reliably informed by the owners that this one is a bit of a thug and good for covering most things in a short space of time. Apologies to anyone on Cleeve Hill if in a few years, we can’t see the pylons for dainty white perfumed

blossoms! (Although, actually to think of it, that could be an improvement?). Of course when we were there it was sunny summer and full of the vibrancy of Charlie Dimmock and peony ‘Bowl of Beauty’ which stood out – now it is in its winter sleep but with a quiet sophisticated simplicity all of its own. A short hop over the road and the production team were at Hidcote, this time noses working full time as the lavender took centre stage. Diarmuid Gavin was the man in lilac and paid homage to the well-loved plant whose

name owes all to this Gloucestershire gem. This acted as the main base for the programme as with Kiftsgate, while the presenters throughout the programme also visited other areas associated with the plant in the spotlight. Speaking of our nasal passages, my final mention today goes to The Cotswold Perfumery where Toby Buckland headed while looking at scented plants. It reminds me of the best possible collection ever of scratch and sniff stickers, which I so keenly collected at Berkhamstead School in the 1980s!

(Probably should have been studying at the time but a fascination with anything that glittered, glowed, smelt, googled its eyes at me or even let me eat it – in the case of rice paper – was just too much to ignore). The bouquet of scents in this perfume garden certainly proved one Toby couldn’t ignore. The Great British Garden Revival is on BBC2 from 5th January, every weekday evening for two weeks. I expect you to cancel all previous engagements! Cheerio and see you in February if I’m not stuck behind the new growth of Rosa ‘Kiftsgate’. COTSWOLD STYLE JANUARY 2015 45

Interview

REVAMP Your Home Emma Logan met with sisters Sarah and Caroline Pearson about their passion for bringing furniture back to life Sarah, Vintage Revamp is a business with a great reputation. How long has the company been established and where are you based? Thank you, we always work hard to give the best service to each individual client, to ensure that our reputation for good quality products and service continues to grow. Vintage Revamp was established in 2012, by Caroline when she began doing one off pieces for friends and family. I came on-board shortly after to help manage the increased sales and interest. For a while we occupied a small stall in a local market, however due to increasing need for space and stability we had to find larger premises. We are now based 5 minutes from the Bath Road, still in Cheltenham. Our new showroom allows us to offer better parking and a comfortable space to display our pieces in the best possible way. I understand you paint and restore vintage furniture. Is this furniture you source or clients bring to you? Actually it's a bit of both. One of the services we offer is to source furniture for clients if they are themselves struggling to find the perfect piece. Once found, we would then continue to paint and finish the item to the clients’ specifications, advising if necessary. We also offer a commission service, where clients can bring pieces to us to 'revamp'. We would have a consultation with the client where we would talk through various colours and finishes, so the end product is exactly what the client was imagining.

Do you have any specific paint techniques? We use a number of different painting techniques to achieve the clients desired aesthetic. We work with 'chalk' paint to attain the older distressed finish favoured by many. We also use other premium brands of paint to finish pieces in a variety of different styles, ranging from bazaar to classic. We can also strip, stain and varnish pieces if the condition of the wood is strong enough.

Please give some case studies of the restoration work you have completed? We have been commissioned on many occasions to help a client to change the look and feel of their living space by painting and sometimes distressing integral pieces of furniture. We have worked on chairs, tables, dressers, sideboards and a variety of bedroom furniture. We once worked with a client who had purchased a holiday home in the Southwest and were looking to furnish it in vintage 'French' style. This was quite a fun commission as it involved working on a number of different elements at the same time, 'Spinning

Plates' if you like. We were working to a tight deadline, not only painting and 'revamping' pieces the client already owned but also actively source unusual items to help the client achieve the overall 'feel' they desired for their second living space.

Will you go to clients’ houses to view or work on projects or is all your work done in-house? We have on previous occasions visited clients homes, not only to view the item the client wants us to work on but also to get a feel and idea of the area where the piece will eventually be homed. That way we can make sure they get the best finish for their home. Smaller pieces can be collected or brought to our workshop to be completed as the client still gets the same level of service, again starting with a detailed consultation. No doubt it is always easier to work in-house, however it is always nice to escape every now and then. My Diary

t's so very quiet up here out of season. There is not a soul in sight and you really do feel like you have the entire farm to yourself. It's wonderful to stop and drink in all the scenery as we really do live in a very beautiful part of England and I feel privileged to do so. The Farm Park can at times be incredibly busy especially over the school holidays, so it's calming and tranquil to look at it all standing still in the winter sun. While it’s like this, I love to sit and watch it all come to life. The bird formations swooping over you, swirling against a beautiful backdrop of a pink sun setting behind the hills. We are so high up here (997ft above sea level) and have an abundance of wildlife; badgers, all sorts of wild birds, foxes and rabbits. It takes me back to my childhood reading my favourite book, Brambly Hedge. I guess I've always loved the countryside, I just didn't realise how much! In the surrounding area of the farm there are plenty of walks and I often bring my dogs up on my days off. It’s a magical adventure through the valleys and streams, where the views are timeless. Even though we are closed to the public at the moment the cogs of the Cotswold Farm Park are still cranking and whirring away behind the scenes, with lots of organising and prep to do. The most important job of all? Preparing our ‘maternity ward’ ready for all the new babies! When we open in February, our lambing season will have started, my absolute favourite time of year. During mid-December we start to scan some of our ewes, as it's important for us to have a rough idea of how many

our commercial flock. To have them all giving birth at the Park at the same time would be just impossible. When they are brought inside in mid-January, the ewes are separated into due date groups, so that we can move them into the ‘maternity ward’ at the correct time. The Demonstration Barn as you know it, will be transformed and unrecognisable. There will be five pens laid out, which helps us to keep the mums expecting single lambs separate from those expecting multiples. There will be lots of freshly stacked bales for the public to sit on, ready to watch the daily live lambing talk. It really is the most magical time on the farm; it's exciting, exhausting and rewarding. It has its highs and its lows and we wouldn't have it any other way. Come and see for yourselves. We open on Valentine's Day…how very apt for a countryside lover such as myself! PHOTO: ROB WHEATMAN

offspring each of them is carrying. We do this so that we can adjust their food consumption; ewes expecting multiples need to be fed much more than those expecting a single lamb, just as it is with pregnant humans! Scanning is actually quite a serious business. For example, we don't want to overfeed a first time yearling ewe expecting just one lamb as their offspring will be too large and the ewe will need intervention at the birth. Our rare breeds will usually produce one, two or very occasionally three lambs… but our commercial flock can sometimes produce four healthy little ones. We’re staggering lambing out over 8 weeks this year, as we have 450 ewes in

The Cotswold Farm Park will be open every day from 10.30am, February 14th – December 20th 2015. Lambing is due to take place until April 12th. For more information visit www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk. To keep up to date with all the latest Farm Park gossip, follow Mandy on Twitter @mandyfarmpark

Coffee Break

ASTAWAY Kate Wood is the beautiful other half of England and Gloucester Rugby Player Nick Wood. As a power couple of the Cotswolds, Kate and Nick can often be found frequenting a star-studded red carpet event or two. Ellie Mainwaring caught up with Kate in a spare minute between standing on the sideline to uncover her Castaway Collection: played in the Church once we were married and were signing the register. It always brings back such great memories of our special day.

Where in the world would you choose to be castaway to and why?

My all time favourite place is Italy, particularly the Amalfi coast. I’m a romantic at heart and Italy just epitomises the very essence of love: the food, the scenery, the language and that effortless chic everyone seems to have. I think I would spend my days peoplewatching, finding a seat on a quiet street or sun lounger and soaking up the beautiful sounds of everyone around me speaking Italian. My one and only fragrance is Jean Paul Gaultier Classique. I’ve worn it since I was 16 and can’t imagine wearing anything else. I no longer notice I’m wearing it, which I like and the scent has become part of who I am. What fragrance would you take?

What item of jewellery or accessory would you take?

I don’t wear a lot of jewellery, but I can certainly be persuaded to wear more if diamonds are involved! In this case I would have to take my engagement ring. It’s so special to me as my husband Nick secretly chose it all by himself pretending he was off playing golf when really he was sneaking around the Cotswolds searching for the perfect bling to seal the deal. It also demonstrates exactly how well he knows me, as it’s totally my style and given the choice I would have picked it myself. You can take one song to your desert island, what would it be?

Hoppípolla by Sigur Rós. It was the song that was

Without question I would take our very silly but utterly adorable Golden Retriever, Phoenix. He’s an overgrown puppy at heart and loves nothing more than rolling in muddy puddles. Phoenix is the gentlest pet we’ve ever owned and our son Oscar’s very best friend – especially at meal times!

Kate

What animal or pet would you take?

Phoenix

Kate and Oscar What would be your luxury item?

My luxury item would have to be our son Oscar. As heavenly as it would be to while away the hours listening to handsome Italians, sipping espressos and indulging in the delicious food, I couldn’t be without my little man. Time really does fly as he’s just turned one and it seems only yesterday he entered our world and changed our family forever. His giggles make everyday worthwhile and it’s hard to remember life before him. Although I’m sure it was a lot less fun but with a lot more sleep!

othing can beat the thrill of racing down a shimmering mountain side at top speed on a pair of skis, while carving a course through soft snow, particularly on powder day in glorious sunshine! The joy of feeling you are on the roof of the world is immense. The views are stupendous surrounded by the jagged white teeth of the stunning mountain backdrop and far reaching views of valleys beyond. Skiing is a glorious way to travel and appreciate beautiful scenery as you go, with fir trees draped in frostings of snow, frozen waterfalls bursting from rock faces and tumbling streams disappearing into snow caves. Each day there is a fresh challenge to face with the excitement of pushing one’s boundaries beyond the comfort zone. Emotions swing from excitement, fear, endurance and even the gulp factor when tackling monster moguls and extreme pistes where you feel like you are in an epic James Bond mountain adventure. A skiing holiday is not just for the powder hounds and does not have to be all about pushing yourself beyond the comfort zone to achieve an adrenalin fix. The very essence of the Alps is relaxation and fun. Sun worshippers abound with plenty of Vin Chaud and La Blonde to get into the holiday spirit and of course the apres-ski, where wholeheartedly embracing the nightlife is a big part of the holiday. There is something for everyone in a ski resort with plenty of off-slope activities from spa-going, yoga

retreats and sledging, snowshoeing, icefishing, skimming (hiking up and down virgin slopes), catskiing (in a snowcat) and snowmobiling (jet skies for snow). A family ski holiday is one of the most memorable and enjoyable ways to spend time together. One of the proudest moments of my life as a mother, was the first time I skied with my three children snow ploughing behind me – I felt like a mother duck with her three little ones racing to keep up - keen not to be left behind. Reunited as a family after ski school, you can enjoy a family ski together where everyone can show off their freshly learnt skills. Following an enormous tea of cakes and scones back

in the chalet, we would head back out onto the slopes for some tobogganing and snow fun. Swimming in the chalet’s steaming, outdoor heated pool surrounded by heaps of snow was a novelty for the children, as was a wonderful hot soak in the Jacuzzi with snowflakes fluttering down. Other activities we enjoyed as a family were iceskating and tobogganing by torch light. Eating out caused great family excitement with the highlight being a Raclette wheel of melted cheese in front of a fire enjoyed with a feast of dried meats, pickled onions and gherkins. Of course the parents paired the fromage with plenty of Pinot Noir.

Mind, Body & Soul Discover for yourself remarkable products and treatments to get you through the cold, winter month of January ReVeal Your Smoother Side at Vallenders Salon – Emma Logan I am sick and tired of waking every morning with bird’s nest hair. All the deep treatment conditioners seem to have zero effect and I thought I had to accept that I would be enduring a winter being a complete frizz head! That is until, I was asked to trial a wonder hair treatment available at Vallenders Hair Salon in Cheltenham called Re Veal. This is a de-frizz and straightening hair treatment which lasts for three months and will take you right through a precarious winter. The beauty of the treatment is that it can be done at the same time as your colour, which

though takes longer (approximately 3.5 hours), Vallenders has full Wi-Fi so you can work away from your lap top or enjoy the peace. Without colour, the procedure is 1.5 hours. First your hair is washed with priming shampoo and blow dried off. There are 3 different types of application depending on ones hair type, I used Re Charge which is for coloured and chemically treated hair. It instantly smooth’s and takes away all ones frizz and I mean all! It’s left on the hair for 20-30 minutes then blow dried with a round brush to give volume. The treatment doesn’t work on natural grey hair as it works on your colour pigment but if you are grey and have your hair coloured then it will work. After the treatment you should ensure you use paraben free hair products, such as the exceptional Bamboo range available from Vallenders. Your hair can be styled as you would normally whether this is wavy or straight – the difference is absolutely no frizz and every morning you wake up with perfect locks! The treatment costs £110. Vallenders Hair Salon, 13 Suffolk Parade, Cheltenham GL50 2AB Tel: 01242 261802 www.vallenders.com The Ultimate Winter Glow – Lucy Garbutt I visited Absolute Beauty in Prestbury Road to experience the pioneering CACI Ultimate facial using exclusive Jennifer Young customised products. The combined ability of the treatment and the skin care range transforms the complexion. room where my pampering began. The CACI Ultimate facial uses the very latest Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument technology and has been voted the most advanced non-surgical anti-ageing treatment available worldwide. The Jennifer Young skin care range is exclusive to Absolute Beauty and boasts 100% natural ingredients utilising herbs, minerals, plant and essential oils. My treatment involved one and a half hours of pure indulgence surrounded by wafting lavender, mandarin and geranium and despite the invigorating tingling surge of the treatment, it was a deeply relaxing experience and I found myself drifting in and out of a powerful afternoon nap. Therapist Teresa worked her magic with the CACI toning, plumping and smoothing probes, which combined with the Jennifer Young range of balms, toners and serums felt and smelt utterly luxurious. There were surprises such as the microdermabrasion of dead skin cells and wavelengths of light therapy stimulating an antibacterial healing action on a couple of blemishes. The penultimate part of the pampering was a unique face mask - a blanket of cooling gel enveloping the face with an intense sensation as the anti-ageing ingredients were practically injected into my skin with conductive rollers to ensure maximum smoothing and softening of lines and wrinkles. Following my treatment people have actually complimented me on my radiant glow! My face does indeed feel deeply hydrated and looks healthy, firmer and smoother with the appearance of pores and lines minimised and the facial seems to have helped even out my skin tone. I am very impressed. I will be back! The CACI Ultimate facial prices range from £50.00. The Jennifer Young product range is exclusive to Absolute Beauty with prices ranging from £20.00. Absolute Beauty, 10 Prestbury Road, Cheltenham GL52 2PW Tel: 01242 579600 www.absolute-beauty.com The Original Dr Vodder Method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage at JOSSPA – Suzy Smith At the beginning of 1930s, Dr. Emil Vodder, authentic creator of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), proved that many of his patients with respiratory problems, improved when he massaged over the nodules of lymph nodes in the neck. The excellent results obtained with this system led him to think that it could work equally well on all nodes of the body surface and influence the lymphatic system. He soon found that the manual method he created had a significant beneficial effect on the nervous and immune systems and a leading draining action on the tissues, thus creating a method of really efficient therapeutic massage. The lymphatic system has a transport function of detoxing or cleaning and dumping waste in the body. Therefore, poor circulation or stagnation of lymph causes various cell disorders, due to inadequate waste disposal. If the stagnation is considerable, the tissues swell and if it is progressive, degenerative diseases may appear as well as arthritis, varicose veins, cellulite and even early aging tissue. Raquel Pérez Martínez is a highly experienced practitioner of MLD and I saw her to alleviate the dreadful sinus problems I experience which is exacerbated at this time of year. Her touch is very gently as she presses on your lymphatic nodes, starting with your neck, before working on the facial area to reduce the inflammation in the forehead and puffiness around the eyes. She progressed onto my stomach area which is highly effective for bloating and then the front and backs of legs which assists with swelling and in some cases cellulite. This is not a ‘deep tissue’ style of massage, it is far more clinical and specifically to relieve areas of your body which are sluggish and need draining - it is highly recommended.

Gail Sophia

One-to-one session with Angel Meditation – Laura-Jayne Roberts I have always been rather sceptical when it comes to anything spiritual and I did not know what to expect when I agreed to a one-to-one session with meditation teacher and spiritual mentor, Gail Sophia, of Angel Meditation. On arrival, I was flustered for three reasons. One, I really thought I did not have enough time in the day to be doing this, two, I didn’t think I needed meditation and three, I was genuinely nervous about what was going to happen next! However I was instantly put at ease, not only from the fact my first task was to have a cup of tea and just talk about where I was in my life but Gail Sophia herself was so easy to talk to with such a calming nature, I instantly relaxed. After tea, we moved to the healing couch. As I sat there comfortably with closed eyes, Gail Sophia spoke. Her words of guidance made me feel very calm and the worries and concerns I had arrived with seemed to become ‘neutralised’ or ‘put on hold’. They seemed less relevant, as though they don’t exist at all. A deep feeling of ‘nothingness’ came over me and all I could focus on was the sound of Gail Sophia’s voice. Nothing else mattered, my regular daily life patterns and demands seemed to melt away. As the meditation continued, time felt non-existent - for someone whose job is constantly dominated by time with meetings and deadlines, it was a strange sensation. I was totally immersed in a place of no-thing and no-where. My daily pressures and people demanding my time and energy no longer existed in that moment. I was totally enveloped in my needs, all through the meditation nothing else mattered. As the meditation came to an end I suddenly felt refreshed and calm. My inner strength, which is required when dealing with various people and situations, seemed to have been ‘topped-

up’. I felt a renewed vitality. But perhaps most of all, I realised my own needs are in fact important and I was so grateful I made time for myself, in that moment, in that meditation and with Gail. Gail works with you at a pace and in a way that feels very personal and tailored to you – whether in a one-toone session, workshop or by using her angel contemplation CD – I couldn’t recommend her highly enough. Fashion

Grace&Glamour Off to the slopes in true chic style With the Christmas climax well and truly over and the optimistic prospect of the New Year ahead of us, what could be needed more in this bitter yet blissful January than dreaming of a winter getaway – at least in the style sense anyway o here we are, a New Year and a new you – right? Wrong! You’re still you and I’m still me but if you fancy the self-improvement route this month, as many of us do, why not start off mixing your style with a little winter wonder. We’re about mid-way through winter now and some of us will be jetting of for some winter sun or something a little more exciting (in my eyes anyway) – a sprinkle of snow. But, if you’re anything like me, you’ll live in fear of being too hot or too cold most of the time. Although I’m not writing this from the ski-slopes, as much as I wish I were, I’ve pulled together some fantastic style options to sport on the slopes this January. Starting with the ever-fabulous Ruby & Ed. Specialists in Faux Fur, Ruby & Ed do it like no other. I’ve fallen head over suitably sized heels (we are talking ski-slopes, after all) for their selection of coats. Their Husky long coat is the perfect

wintertime colour and couldn’t look better with the snow as a backdrop. But, if you’re not a fan of the lighter fur, you could always pick up their Jet coat, complete with warming hood, available in black. And if that wasn’t enough, their accessories are pretty great too. If you’re planning on trying not to fall in the snow too much, then you’ll need some gloves. And if you have to wear gloves, you’ll want the super cute, mitten kind that will coordinate perfectly with your Husky coat, won’t you now? Now if only there was some sort of neckwear to match – and there is, in the form of the Husky neck warmer. Isn’t it a must have?

Husky fur long coat £275 Jet Fur hooded coat £275

Sorel

With all this faux fur excitement, I really feel the need to add in a little practicality. We all know I’m not all that practical myself but this season I am in love with Sorel boots. Sorel are fantastic for winter boots, weather boots and all round sensible boots that have a little sass about them. The Tofino Cate boot in Curry Plum has become my fave of all, with the Joan of Arc, in Peatmoss, coming in a very close second. With footwear like this, I feel like I need to plan an occasion to wear them – I can see my January suddenly filling up with woodland walks and a huge wish for snow! So if you find yourself surrounded by snow this January, whether it’s at home or away, you know you’ve got your style finds covered. Now all we need is the promise of snow. Here’s hoping!

o Christmas is over and hopefully one hasn’t indulged too much, as this month’s fashion feature is combining swim and ski wear; the innovative idea of photographer Stef Calleja-Gera, for a collaboration of winter sun. The shoot took place at Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds, in and around the beautiful C-Side Spa. Sandra Dee, a magnificent lingerie and beachwear shop provided the swimwear and traditional tailor’s, Horace Barton both of which are based in Cheltenham, provided the skiwear. No need to go to Snow And Rock, Giles from Horace Barton provides a great selection and is very helpful and knowledgeable having once himself been a champion skier. boutique and only five minutes out of Cheltenham within the grounds of Cowley Manor, provided the male swim shorts as worn by Daniel Craig in James Bond. They also carry a selection of ladies swimwear along with beautiful, unusual clothing brands. The models’ natural, tousled hair was once again styled by the talented team at Vallenders Salon and the stunning make up was created by Madeline Jones, who achieved the perfect, natural look suitable for the beach or piste. It was a really fun shoot as always with photographers Stef and Davey, my assistant Harriet Beaton, the fabulous models Lauren, Elliot and Alicia and a big thanks to the C-Side Spa at Cowley Manor for their patience and providing a delicious lunch. So whether you are fortunate enough to be jetting off to the sun or slopes, you know where to visit for your entire winter sun wardrobe, as it can all be found on your doorstep!

Interview

Radio 1 DJ heads up THE SLIM LINE CAMPAIGN Cotswold Tailor, Barrington Ayre based in Cirencester has joined forces with TW Steel watches to front their Slim Line campaign for the UK that sees their best suits paired with the illustrious watches. Cotswold Style Editor Emma Logan chatted to Radio 1 DJ, Greg James who is an ambassador the campaign PHOTOGRAPHY BY WWW.STUDIOGDPHOTOGRAPHY.CO.UK

How long have you been working at Radio One? I have been there since 2007 and started on the Early Breakfast Show before Chris Moyles from 4am-6.30am.

You were a presenter for this year’s Invictus Games, what was it like working with Prince Harry and did the events inspire you? It felt like I was doing ‘grown up TV’. It was an absolute honour to be involved – Prince Harry is a dream to interview and such a lovely chap. Its very impressive what he managed to organise and the competitors I met were so excited to be there, taking part in these televised events. What a moment for them. Those athletes had really been through the mill, so it was such an achievement to represent their country. Style is obviously very important to you, what made you choose bespoke tailoring? I like uncomplicated, clean design. It is important to me but style is not the most important thing in life. You should feel comfortable and look like you care about your appearance but it shouldn’t be what defines you. I love wearing a suit – probably because I don’t get to wear one often in my job but I feel special in something that fits nicely. Luckily tall people look good in suits too.

Who is the worst dresser at Radio One? Me, circa 2007! When I didn’t have to bother at 3 in the morning it was hoodies and baggy trackies I’m afraid. You have been involved in the new TW Steel Slim Line campaign, what has this involved? I LOVE watches. With my job in radio, I’m obviously always clock-watching so a good watch is vital. I am obsessed with

time and clocks and watches and the TW Steel Slim Line range is perfect for me. It has a big face but isn’t too bulky because I have girly wrists!

What other brands do you wear? I do love Burberry and their whole attitude to fashion. It’s high end but not snobby – snobbiness is the thing that puts me off fashion. They also really support new music and new talent and they helped me out when I started at Radio 1 by getting me to host some of their fashion shows.

How often do you visit the Cotswolds and what is your favourite place to visit? The Cotswold is such a beautiful part of the world! Barnsley House is my absolute favourite escape in the UK. The little cinema there is really cool too. What are you working on for 2015? I have got a big new BBC Three entertainment show starting in February which is me playing a role I’ve never done before. I’m involved in a pretty weird social experiment. I think people will love it. That’s all I can say for now – Ha! For patients with a missing tooth, dental implant therapy is today’s treatment of choice Your decision to replace missing teeth with dental implants is an excellent investment in your oral health and appearance. They can vastly improve your health-related quality of life, allow you to eat foods you previously couldn’t and are very cost-effective, all of which will leave you with a confident and happy smile.

Ceramic Dental Implants A dental implant is a small post-like part which is inserted in the jaw bone in place of the missing tooth root. With the Straumann® PURE Ceramic Implant, you have a tooth-coloured and metal-free alternative which acts and

looks like a natural and healthy tooth. More than an implant - A new tooth. When we talk about healthy teeth, it is not only function that matters. They are also an essential part of your physical appearance – therefore you expect an optimal aesthetic and natural outcome for your dental restorations. The Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant is made of high-strength ceramic and designed to achieve the highest functional and aesthetic demands. Since it has the colour of a natural tooth, the implant will not shimmer through, even in cases of thin or recessed gum. With the Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant you receive an implant that:: • Has a tooth-like colour for highly aesthetic restorations • Offers a metal-free alternative with excellent biocompatibility • Is mechanically tested before insertion and backed by scientific evidence

We are able to cover all your needs even if you are very nervous. Our highly skilled dental team will reassure you if you are a nervous patient. Your Implant Consultation is carried out at your pace with constant explanation and reassurance and is an opportunity for the Dentist to inspect your current dentition, take some x-rays and advise you appropriately. We employ “stop signals” therefore ensuring you are in control at all times. Dental fear is a real and paralyzing barrier to seeking help and advice. It can be a negative cycle that without the right support and encouragement, is impossible to break. We have a wealth of experience and are here to help with a variety of techniques at our disposal. Our aim is to ensure you finish your treatment with a healthy beautiful smile. Researched and manufactured according to the highest standards The Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant underwent rigorous scientific research before its introduction to the market. Furthermore, every single Straumann PURE Ceramic Implant is tested mechanically before it is delivered to the dentist. Pets

It’s cold out there... Animal advice from our friends at Vets on the Park Its that time of year again, the nights are drawing in, the heating is on and there is nothing nicer than curling up on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate. But during the winter months we must also consider keeping our pets cosy too. Here are a few tips to help and if the weather man is right then we could also be in for the coldest winters for more than 50 years!

RABBITS AND GUINEA PIGS • Keep your small furries in pairs, they are social animals and they will keep each other warm! However make sure they are neutered if you are mixing sexes! Also keep in mind that mixing rabbits and guinea pigs together is not a good idea – rabbits have been known to bully guinea pigs. • Make sure you provide plenty of good quality hay and extra food, they will use up extra calories keeping warm • Check your hutch, make sure it is water tight and there are no draughts. If you notice patches of damp then the roof may need replacing. • Insulate the hutch using old blankets or carpet, it is possible to purchase specially designed hutch covers. • Clean out the hutch daily since wet bedding will become cold • Microwavable heat-pads can be used over night, they will give up to 10 hours of heat but doo not be tempted to use hot water bottles – they could easily be chewed. • Check water bottles regularly, the nozzles can become frozen cutting off the water supply to your pet. Wine bottle insulators can be wrapped around water bottles so help stop them freezing. • Guinea Pigs will require extra vitamin C during the winter months as they cannot synthesise their own so make sure the food you select has plenty.

CATS AND DOGS • Never leave your pets outside or in cars, unheated conservatories or caravans. • Do not let your pets lie on frozen ground for long periods of time. • If you have a dog breed with a fine coat invest in a warm coat for them. • Consider keeping cats indoors during winter nights • If your dog gets wet during a walk make sure you dry them off as soon as possible. • Salt used for de-icing pavements can cause irritation to the delicate pads of dogs feet so always dry them off after a walk. • Ensure that your pets are microchipped and are wearing tags in case you lose them in the dark. Why not invest in a light up collar or tag for you dogs collar so you can see them when out on walks in the dark evenings? We stock ordered a range of fantastic new light up collars called Lumitubes plus some illuminated collar tags called B’Seen.

Time to review the company’s harassment policy? In the wake of the Christmas party season (when this question comes up most often), I thought I might remind business owners about precautionary steps they will see as unnecessary until it comes up, following which, each and every business owner will wish they had heeded this advice By Trula Brunsdon of Sherborne Solicitors LLP ost of us are fortunate enough to feel we work in a nice environment where our colleagues can give and take a joke and we all generally try to make the best of our time at work. For this reason, business owners tend not to prioritise things such as harassment policies. Why would you? The reason you should, is that it can provide a defence in the event that one day an employee decides to take umbrage and sue you or your company. Take a client earlier this year. A nice business, great working atmosphere in which the male and female staff joked with each other, supported each other, cried on each others’ shoulders and commented if one or another looked good (or “sexy” in this case). A new employee came in; not a young woman but one who took the trouble to make herself look nice. She initiated conversations with male directors, which would in all fairness make your hair curl! Letting their guard down, these directors responded in kind. All seemed well until one day the employee resigned and only at that point did the company find out that not only was she taking them to tribunal but that she had used her phone to record the bits that the directors had said. (Funnily enough she had not recorded the bits she had said). In the circumstances, what defence could there be? They were on tape, making lewd jokes and suggestions and while the woman admitted making similar comments, she claimed that she only made them as she feared for her job in this environment. The company had no defence and had to settle the case for a five-figure sum. This was at a time when they really did struggle to afford it.

M

“THE COMPANY HAD NO DEFENCE AND HAD TO SETTLE THE CASE FOR A FIVE-FIGURE SUM. THIS WAS AT A TIME WHEN THEY REALLY DID STRUGGLE TO AFFORD IT.” How could they have saved themselves from this and maintain a fun working environment? The answer is simple; all they had to do was to have had a policy for harassment that prohibited such conduct, which gave the employee a route to follow if she felt like this and they would have been half way home. It is called “the statutory defence”, meaning that the employer had taken such steps as were necessary to protect the employee from this sort of behaviour. As long as the managing director of the company was not engaging in such conversation, a small company would in most circumstances be able to avoid liability. Larger companies can bolster their protection by giving managers training

on equal opportunities. It really doesn’t take much and it is probably a sensible thing to have anyway. The sad thing is that this is not the only case of this type that I have seen this last year; in fact it is one of many. If, as a company you don’t have a harassment policy and equal opportunities policy, you should bear in mind that every one of the “victim” companies last year wished afterwards that they had one – and the cost of getting one was less than a nice lunch for four in Cheltenham. Business Charlotte Tupper from Montpellier Asset Management explains more... Calculate your net worth The New Year is a propitious time to calculate your net worth. It is good practice to repeat this exercise every year so that you know you are heading in the right direction. Simply add up all your assets, including your main residence, properties, shares, investments and deduct any loans or debt you may have.

1

Budget and Forecast Forecast your monthly income and likely expenditure. This should be a comprehensive list of your income and outflow and it will enable you to gain understanding and achieve financial order. There are many websites online to help you with this.

2

Make the most of all your investments I always like to work as closely as possible with the clients’ accountant as this makes sure I am giving the best possible advice whilst ensuring maximum tax efficiency. There are a variety of investment vehicles, taxes and income types, so it is paramount to obtain advice

3

New Year New You Ring in the New Year with Six New Year Resolutions for a financially savvy in order to new you... maximise your portfolio in terms of diversity, making use of allowances and risk management.

Don’t squander unexpected income When you have a windfall, whether it is a bonus, gift, or inheritance, apply the rule of thirds to determine how to use it. Use one third for the past, to pay off any outstanding debts. One third for the present, making a purchase if you so wish, and use one third for the future and investments. If you follow this rule, you’ll see your debt shrink and your savings grow, whilst not feeling deprived.

4

Always keep an emergency fund to hand There will always be something to throw you off your monthly budget. To keep these incidents from running you into debt, you need to have an emergency fund in an easily accessible account, preferably a money market account as they earn a little more interest than regular savings accounts. This is usually set at between 3-6 months income.

5

Regularly review your savings, borrowings and investments Reviewing things like your bank accounts, mortgage, pension and savings will make sure that they are still right for you. Fixed Term Accounts will come to an end and unless they remind you or you remember yourself, you can end up receiving very little interest or incurring higher charges. I always review these with my clients and am happy to review them for you.

WESTMINSTER IN THE COTSWOLDS With so many political issues affecting the Cotswolds and the General Election now only four months away, Emma Logan has asked the county’s MPs to inform Cotswold Style readers what they have been doing to represent their constituencies both locally and from Westminster

Neil Carmichael

NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD The last week of November saw the 3rd annual Stroud Festival of Manufacturing and Engineering (FESTOMANE), opened by HRH Prince Charles at Stratford Park Leisure Centre for a week long programme of events to promote and celebrate the engineering sector in the local area. As manufacturing and engineering continue to perform well – growing at the rate of 1.3% per quarter – it is obviously right to focus on the employment opportunities that it brings. In my constituency 25% of all jobs are in, or connected to the sector. The festival further encourages young people to consider engineering as a future career, offering primary and secondary schools, colleges and local companies the opportunity to work together to encourage interest through apprenticeships. Nearly 3,000 have started an apprenticeship in the last four years helping in the continued drive to 94 JANUARY 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE

bring down unemployment. A particular highlight for me was to see over 120 participants at the “Girl Power” event held at Renishaw, with other companies such as Delphi and Airbus hosting workshops for females to demonstrate that there are a wide range of career offers for women in the industry and talks by successful female engineers to debunk the perception that the profession is not for women. One of the most rewarding outcomes of the festival in previous years is to have heard back from students who have been inspired to pursue a career thanks to this event encouraging them to do so. I wish all readers of Cotswold Style best wishes for the New Year ahead of us. www.neilcarmichael.co.uk

Politics

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown

I hope you and your family had a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. I should like to wish you well for 2015. The last year has been extremely busy, with many issues coming to the fore. My priorities for 2015 are to continue to fight to protect our countryside from inappropriate development and this means respecting Green Belt and AONB boundaries. I will be pressing the government to move forward quickly on its assessment of what is needed to improve the Missing Link, including Nettleton Bottom and Crickley Hill and to start to make those improvements. I will continue to support businesses and do my best to ensure that we have high levels of employment in this area. And I will continue to work hard to try to ensure that our public services provide excellent care and service to all constituents. There are challenges that lie ahead. Nationally, we must ensure that the government continues to follow prudent financial and economic policies, which will reduce the deficit and return our economy to balance. A good level of growth has been achieved recently and we are one of Europe's leading economies. This doesn't happen by accident but has to be worked on and I will be pressing the government to help reduce the burden of taxation for many people, particularly lower paid workers and to encourage enterprise and hard work. And for those who are unable to work, or who are elderly, we must ensure that we provide them with a good standard of living in every respect. So, much to do in 2015, as there was in 2014 but I look forward to the challenge. www.laurencerobertsonmp.com

GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS There have been two important developments in the last month. The first of these was the Government’s first ever Road Investment Strategy, which was announced in December. This scheme will involve investing £15 billion into the national road network, which will really help deliver growth and jobs across the country. I was naturally, after many years of campaigning, pleased to see that the A417 Missing Link was included in this announcement. I am delighted that the Government have now committed to finding a solution for A417 road improvements. I have campaigned on this issue ever since the Crickley Hill by-pass was opened in the late 1990s. This investment will allow the important work to take place and hopefully resolve the problems we have been facing on the A417 and reduce the number of accidents. I also presented my Ten Minute Rule Bill to the House of Commons to remove the 15-year rule, which currently prevents British citizens from voting in UK elections if they have lived abroad for more than 15 years. As I said during my speech in Parliament, I think this is incredibly unfair considering that these are often people that have worked hard in the UK for many years contributing to the tax system and have maintained very close links with their homeland. Since presenting the Bill to Parliament I have had people contacting me from all over the world thanking me for my efforts, which shows just how much people that do live abroad, want to engage with British politics but are prevented from doing so by this 15-year rule. www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk

Richard Graham

RICHARD GRAHAM, MP FOR GLOUCESTER Last year’s Autumn Statement ushered in some early Christmas cheer and I want to highlight just a few examples. As a long time champion of apprenticeships, the announcement that Employer National Insurance contributions for apprentices under 25 will be completely abolished was especially welcome; businesses that give a young person a chance in life will be supported and not taxed. This is about supporting aspiration, as is the reformed stamp duty. The new system puts an end to the unfair arrangement of having to pay the higher rate of tax on the entire value of your house if you’d only just crept into that band. In Gloucester 99.2% will now pay less. The rise in the state pension was also confirmed. £950 a year more than in 2010 is a great help to many. Lastly Hospice charities make an enormous contribution to our communities and have long been subject to unfair rules that force them to pay VAT but from April they will be able to claim a refund. Unemployment, inflation and the deficit are all falling, while Britain is forecast to be the fastest growing economy of any major, advanced economy in the world and these announcements will help to bring a happier New Year to many of my constituents. www.richardgraham.org Regrettably at the time of going to print, for the third month running, Cotswold Style has not heard back from the office of Martin Horwood, MP for Cheltenham

What has changed in family law? 2014 has been an eventful year for Family lawyers. There have been a number of changes in the Courts’ approach to divorce, separation and children issues which have an impact on our work. Our focus on helping clients through these difficult times, however, remains exactly the same as it always has been – we are committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes.

Whist there has been a judicial drive for divorcing couples to attempt mediation prior to issuing a financial application at court, we have seen a number of interesting cases over the course of the last 12 months that illustrate that mediation is not always a feasible approach. To cover just a few: London has been reconfirmed as “the divorce capital of the world” with an award of £337m to the wife of a London financier. The courts adding further support to the validity of nuptial agreements.

Not less than three reported cases involving husbands being jailed or receiving suspended sentences for contempt of court in refusing to either provide financial disclosure, meet ongoing mortgage payments or to pay a lump sum, and finally, a finding that a wife who had alleged that a donation of £25m to a tiger charity was fabricated was being “blinded by her desire for revenge”.

In 2014 we saw the introduction of the Children and Families Act 2014. This brought in changes to the way that the Courts approach disputes relating to children. Parents used to be able to apply for residence and contact orders, but as of 22 April 2014, these no longer exist.

They have been replaced by the Child Arrangements Order, which may specify with whom a child is to live, and/or provide for them to spend time with the other parent. There is now also a presumption that the non-resident parent should have an involvement in the child’s life, although the extent of their involvement will always depend on the individual facts of the case.

There has also been a focus in the press on the way that adoptions are dealt with. Recently the BBC reported that the number of children being placed by the Local Authority for adoption had halved in the last year following the case of Re B-S (Adoption Order) (2013). This new case law has made it more difficult for a Court to authorise adoption. However, there is still great emphasis on children joining a new family legally by way of adoption. Many studies show that children who are adopted into a new family do much better than children who stay in long-term foster care. In all cases relating to children, the Courts will continue to adopt the approach that the child’s welfare will be of paramount importance.

Our team of experienced family lawyers are able to provide advice and guidance for anyone dealing with any of these issues. If you would like some advice and assistance, please contact us on 01242 246439. No liability is accepted for the advice given in this article in respect of individual matters. CLOSING THE GAP… Eric Barton takes a look at local recruitment consultants Adjacency Recruitment fines wines to make a great wine. Two years ago founders Joe Graham and fellow Director Miles Greenslade were fused together by a mutual client who felt that their combined knowledge and strengths would make a colossus of a consultancy, the die was cast. Both had come from differing professional backgrounds; Joe Graham is a chartered accountant and Miles Greenslade came from a sales and marketing background before they commenced their careers in recruitment almost 20 years ago. Prior to the formation of Adjacency Recruitment, Joe Graham had been a stand-alone consultant after selling his previous business to a Fortune 500

company and Miles Greenslade was a founding Director of a Global listed recruitment firm. No serious business worth its salt is created in a blink, it takes time and careful planning which meant that both Joe and Miles spent over six months just setting out the business goals, the ethos and structure of the consultancy. This is attention to detail in the extreme and was a clear intention at the time that they meant to create something of solidity and worth. Joe Graham says,’’ We both felt that our skills sets and experience in the recruitment sector was a great match and that it was going to be a success from day one’’. Miles

Being close to certain things is a definite must. I’ll exclude bombs and crowd riots, but will include loved ones, a fine work of art and even some food groups as some shining examples. Having said that, working closely with someone on a given project rates very highly too. Any business needs to set its self apart as both an expert in its field and as having something unique to offer if they are to flourish. Cheltenham based recruitment consultancy Adjacency Recruitment has well and truly ticked both these marketing boxes. Welding two precious metals together always produces a finer and stronger match of materials, it’s like blending two

Greenslade says, ‘we both knew very early on what we wanted from each other to make the business a success. It was always going to be about common values and a core strategy that would determine the shape and future of the business’’. It’s refreshing to hear that a business had a clear vision of its future and its business goals. How often do fledging businesses flounder at the very first fence because there was no proper planning in place? Joe Graham comments, ‘’our core values are at the very beating heart of the business and in a sense provides our USP when it comes to both candidates and clients alike’’. The consultancy now provides search, selection and interim management recruitment services to a wide range of clients; sourcing exceptional talent from their existing network of candidates, advertised selection, direct headhunting which is all underpinned by networking and referral gathering that leaves no gaps. Miles Greenslade goes on to further add, ‘we work extremely hard to identify the right candidate for our clients. There’s no point in putting a round peg in a square hole. In fact we have a candidate and a client charter published on our website that sets out our commitment to our candidates and our clients’’. He also says, ‘’it’s all about the trust and confidence both sides put in us when working for them’’. Adjacency Recruitment does bring a plethora of experience and expertise to the recruitment mix, which is wholly founded on their core values that they had set out from day one. They also garner their resources to enable them to deliver Finance, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources, Operations and General Management remits right up to Board level appointments. It’s a level of internal skills sets that’s been honed to produce the right calibre of both business, advice and fulfilment. Joe Graham further comments, “we constantly talk to buyers to find out what’s happening in the marketplace. We strive very hard to find the right candidates and it can, in some cases, be a slow burn to identify the right person’’.

Business

“We constantly talk to buyers to find out what’s happening in the marketplace. We strive very hard to find the right candidates and it can, in some cases, be a slow burn to identify the right person.” Both Joe and Miles know the region’s job market very well and pride themselves in being one of the most proactive recruitment consultancies around. In fact they have over some 60 years of experience between them. The growth of the business has been fairly meteoric as it started from zero and now has 10 staff in just fifteen months. Miles also says, ‘’We recognise that the quality of advice we provide on critical human capital issues, the very DNA of our clients business, is fundamental to their success and an integral part of our long-term relationship strategy’’. Sound words indeed and smacks of a commitment to the longer view. He goes on to say, the marketplace has an average of 30% fill rate and here at Adjacency Recruitment we are regularly operating at well over 80%. So it’s an

indication of how well we are matching candidates to clients’’. They are currently the regions fastest growing independent recruitment companies and look set to be one of the largest too. At Adjacency Recruitment their existing clients cover a broad spectrum of sectors including Manufacturing, Professional Services, Financial Services, Energy, FMCG, Logistics, Retail, Technology & Telecoms, Public Sector, Communications and Media. So it’s a broad brush of sectors that allows the business to fully embrace a long list of possible clients and candidates searching for that prefect job. Remember a career to most people is everything. It pays for mortgages, holidays, future financial planning and to most, delivers a sense of fulfilment and well-being. It’s not just a job and that’s the view of Miles, Joe and the team at Adjacency Recruitment. Joe Graham finally says, ‘our candidates and our clients expect us to use our judgement and our expertise when it comes to filling vacancies. We operate under the auspices of respect and confidentiality, which is a responsibility that we take extremely seriously. We know we have a duty of care to get it right’’. So if you’re thinking of a move or are need of a square hole to be filled with a square peg, then Adjacency Recruitment are here to close up the gap, as working close-up is what they do best. Say hello to the old you… It’s true that time stands still for no man or woman. The relentless tide of time ages us all eventually, and we all want to look better. When you need that bit of extra help, and begin to delve into the medical cosmetic world, the variety of treatments available nowadays becomes quickly overwhelming and daunting. That’s why is so refreshing to find a true professional, who knows the real dilemmas, knows the business and has an honest approach to what can be achieved. Combine that with being highly trained, passionate and having a deep integrity about helping people, you’ll not find any better than Alison Taylor to be that guide. None of us want to go down the Joan Rivers route – the fear of having that “overdone” look is what stops many of us from making the move. Finding the balance of looking so much better whilst it not being obvious is exactly the balance that Alison has expertise in. In her clinic, right in the heart of Cheltenham, it is obvious that there is a delightful combination of professionalism and style. Its discreet location lends itself to privacy and intimacy, yet it still remains a friendly place. Alison qualified as a registered nurse in 1987 she held senior posts in the NHS and has kept her registration as a nurse to this day, practising nurse in cosmetic medicine. “I became very disillusioned with the NHS and the lack of old fashioned compassion and caring. When I left, it was quite impulsive and not the best planned exit but I had such a drive to strike out on my own and I knew that I could make a positive change in peoples’ lives under my own steam”. Alison started the business with no borrowing and has grown the business from its standing start without the banks support as the recession hit just as she started!). Alison opened her first skin clinic in Charlton Kings in 2006. The clinic has

grown and grown over the years, with a huge and loyal following to this day. Alison attends training and master-classes every few months to ensure her skills are up to date and fine-tuned. This has given her the confidence to open a luxury clinic in Regent Street offering the very latest treatments whilst still upholding her strong personal values of giving natural beauty back in a subtle but effective way. In fact when you arrive at Alison Taylor Medical Cosmetics it does have a slight London feel about it. This is a good thing. It’s a nice calming place to be. Elegantly furnished with a subtle hint of sophistication, the clinic does have the

ability to put you at ease right away. Who wants to be treated at the back of some ones house or a dull, drab treatment room when you can literally step into the light of Alison’s reception and treatment room? We all want to feel that we are in the best hands and that the clinic we attend is both professional and has the right aura. The list of available treatments at Alison Taylor Medical Cosmetics is both varied and extensive. It’s a veritable cocktail of the latest procedures available; everything from wrinkle relaxing and dermal and lip fillers, through to micro needling, skin peels, facial thread veins and skin care. “I’ve now been able to invest in the latest in skin tightening equipment, the first in Gloucestershire. Having to wait and save up has enabled me to choose the best equipment with the best proven results. I also have the latest in LED light therapy (that’s the safe and healing part of natural light which makes our skin feel fabulous after a holiday in the sun) and the new safe, pain free skin tightening and I’m so excited about the results we’re seeing already. Combine this with excellent clinically proven skin care, there’s more hope than ever before of having smooth, clear skin. I also treat the problem skin – removing skin tags, moles, veins as well as helping with acne and rosacea.” Alison continues to say, “Our skin is the signpost to our well- being and if you’re confident in your skin, then you feel better about everything. It’s really important to me that I can offer the treatment I believe in to give the best results. I don’t want anyone to be less than happy with their results. I have no hesitation in saying “No” if I think the treatment will look unnatural, or if I think that person is in the least bit vulnerable.” That’s where my training and vocation guide me to give the best I can. The best feedback is when people look at themselves in the mirror and smile at the improvement. I want them to leave knowing they’ve had something done, which no-one will notice – it’s a fine art making people look younger, rested and refreshed” “This business is all about art and science. I’m meticulous in assessing

someone’s features and working out a plan which they’ll like – and it can be very difficult seeing someone through their own eyes and trying to see what they see. I have to be counsellor, therapist and scientist all at the same time”. The clinics run as a clinic rather than just a money making business. There are clinics and salons opening all over the country offering a huge number of treatments. There are not many run by single independent people. The difference is that Alison is always present, it’ll be her you see from start to finish and you can ring anytime with a question without fear of judgement. These are great sentiments, as the days of the celebrity lips and pouts are long gone and the more subtle procedures seem to be the way forward. It’s all about radiant, firm skin. Skin lifting (necks, chins, and jowls) is now possible without the knife and now with little down time. To achieve this Alison offers EndyMed 3DEEP radiofrequency treatments which is a skin tightening treatment that does exactly that. She also offers Dermalux LED Phototherapy that rejuvenates, repairs and revitalises

skin. Alison further says, ‘’our skin is a complex organ and so if we can do something about breathing new life into it then we should’’. As the business grows Alison makes it very clear that identity is everything in the business of cosmetics. She is well known to all the big company names who supply the best quality products. She also goes on to say that the free consultation will not be followed by hard sales or pressure to go ahead. It’s important that you consider it and feel fully confident. The clinic is open six days a week for appointments as well as evening and weekend appointments available. Alison has such a passion for her business and her work. “This new clinic has been such a fantastic move for me. It feels like everything is positive and that the future is very bright. All my hard work is paying off, my customers are so supportive and loyal. I have met and fallen in love with a wonderful man and am planning a wedding in May next year. My soon to be husband is a local GP and he takes great interest in my work and is fully supportive. It’s a great boon to be given that kind of support from another health professional’’. Patients at Alison Taylor Medical Cosmetics range from 18 – 75yrs. So you see this kind of clinic does reach out to everybody. As Alison says. ‘’even if it’s just a freshen up for your skin for a special do, or you want to look in the mirror and not see the tired face anymore, there’s so much on offer - why would you not want to look a more rested, better you? ‘’ Couldn’t agree more. So if you feel that you’re looking a bit stern, tired or are in need of a boost, then give Alison Taylor a call. It just might be the first step in saying hello to the new radiant you. Conquering the Cotswolds… Laura-Jayne Roberts meets the driving force behind estate agents, Cook Residential, and uncovers their ultimate business goal… Having started sole trading in only September 2012, this driven and passionate property company has gone from strength to strength. Now looking to conquer the Cotswolds and surrounding areas, 2015 is an extremely exciting time for Michelle Cook, founder of Cook Residential. Michelle said: “I started out on my own, trading from my second bedroom and then very quickly the company expanded. This enabled me to employ staff, and by October the following year, we were based in offices, of which we now occupy three floors of instead of the initial one, and I have quickly progressed to having a fantastic team of nine staff. I am really pleased with the company’s progress and how it has gone.” Starting out in the estate agent industry in 2001, ambitious Michelle, whose role model is her father who built the company Cook’s Glass from scratch, progressed her career throughout the years, but going alone was always on her mind. “Setting up on my own was always something I had aspired to do and I am absolutely thrilled that I did it. I don’t regret

it at all and am so happy.” Born and bred in Cheltenham, Michelle not only has a great knowledge of the local area and industry but she religiously follows the housing market, trends and conditions. “I have so much experience of buying and selling houses in Cheltenham and I feel like I know everyone, so the town seemed the obvious choice to set up my company. I feel as though I have blinked and

the whole two years of trading has vanished on me. It has had its ups and downs, and been challenging at times but always extremely rewarding,” Michelle said. Building a really good solid team and making sure that everyone works together has been critical to Cook Residential’s success. Michelle stressed: “Customer service is extremely important to us and we won an award at the Estas customer awards, for exactly this. We were very proud to go to London and pick up our accolade for something that is one of our main aims.” From the outside Cook Residential may appear to be just another Cheltenham estate agent, but delve a little deeper and it is clear to see they are a totally different agency to all of their competitors. Michelle said: “All estate agents are doing exactly the same thing. Everyone gives customer service but it is about building a relationship with the client and going above and beyond. We put together

“We are looking to expand into the Cotswolds and the surrounding areas. Our ultimate goal is to be the most successful estate agent in the Cotswolds“ packages and tailor it to each individual clients need. We understand the needs of our clients and realise that it’s the biggest transaction, at that point in time, in their life, and therefore with our skills, experience and dedicated staff members we can make that journey as easy and stress free as possible; from the beginning in viewing the property to completion.” Plus if the saying rings true that the ‘proof is in the pudding’ there is no fairer proof than the fact for Cook Residential, “we have lots of clients that write lovely reviews and testimonials saying how fantastic we are in comparison to other agencies,” adds Michelle. By carefully handpicking the Cook Residential team to suit specific roles that have needed filling within business, has resulted in staff turnover remaining extremely low. Michelle stated: “We are very fortunate in that because we have a good team and are very solid as a unit, we are in a great position where we are building and expanding and bringing more people on board. They are all here for the longevity and in return we really look after them and make Cook Residential a very enjoyable place to work.”

2015 looks set to be a tremendously exciting year for Cook Residential, with many forms of expansion taking place and lots of promising elements on this estate agents horizon. “We are having a new website built which is going to be launched early 2015. It is going to be very interactive with the public, very user friendly and informative with step-by-step guides for buying and selling. We will also be getting more involved in social media and blogs,” added Michelle. Perhaps the most exciting of all is the unanimous company aim of conquering the Cotswolds. Enthusiastic Michelle said: “We are looking to expand into the Cotswolds and the surrounding areas. Our ultimate goal is to be the most successful estate agent in the Cotswolds. However no matter how large we grow, we won’t lose this element of the personal service of the business, which is the most important. Clients will always be a name, not a number. A lot of our business comes from word of mouth and reputation. It is key that we continue with that.” Michelle is inspired to continue the legacy of her late father and see the Cook

name prominent again in the area. Cook Residential may have grown rapidly but Michelle and her team have adapted by employing more staff, while still keeping the control and therefore the personal service which makes the company unique. Michelle added: “At Cook Residential we make decisions based on our local knowledge and local trends, a decision on what is actually current in Cheltenham at the time, we are specific. We pick all the best and necessary elements, without having to stick to a template. Ultimately we retain the freedom to make the best possible decisions for our clients. Bring on 2015.” Cook Residential 4 Tebbit Mews, Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham GL52 2NF Tel: 01242 500259 Email: enquiries@cookresidential.co.uk www.cookresidential.co.uk

Firing Up Business... The primary starting point for any business wanting to become more successful is increased sales. So what could be lacking in your company? A flat sales market, lack of growth, poor staff morale, is your business badly structured and in need of some rejuvenation? Leading business solution specialists Firestarter, are the experts in driving teams to achieve sustainable targets starting from the sales process, to people leadership and continual growth. Firestarter will embed a broad set of tried and tested sales, marketing and operational principles into your firm. Founded in May 2012, the company has two offices based in Cirencester and Cheltenham and employs a team of ten staff headed by Matt Wheeler, Chris O’Riordan and Liza Bewick who between them have a wealth of performance skills gained through their former careers. Matt is a product and marketing expert having worked at Director level through the corporate environment taking many products to market. Chris has always been a sales driven specialist with many senior leadership roles, running £30 million + businesses throughout the UK whilst Liza has a leadership focus specialising in people recruitment and development, being a qualified mentor and personal coach. A combination of their three skills and the rest of the Firestarter team lays the perfect foundation to help other

companies become successful. Firestarter has refrained from referring to themselves as traditional Management Consultants as they don’t just inform a client of a working strategy; they move into a firm and embed their team to ‘roll their sleeves up’ and actually implement necessary changes, transforming and directing the future of a business. They have been extremely successful at senior management level, transforming and directing necessary change to businesses, such as improved processes, structure, leadership and, ultimately sales returns and

profitability. Marketing and brand strategy is clearly key to any company but this not just about for example, printed material such as attractive looking brochures. It has to be commercially driven and Firestarter is totally focused on how that would impact the sales and growth of a business, from clear and precise propositions to take products to market, to helping businesses really understand how they can get the best returns from their products and services. Says Matt Wheeler, “In many instances, businesses have great products, but don’t have a clear idea on how to go to market or to sell effectively. We help businesses to make sense of everything to find out what the real proposition is and then take it to market. We then develop customer focused marketing and sales tools to ensure that proposition can be communicated effectively.” Liza is heavily focused on the people in the business driving the leadership process and overall business impact. This has become such an important part

This is dedicated to finding the right staff working in the right company in the right roles - igniting careers. She and her team match people strategies to ongoing business strategies, driving business impact through people impact. She says, “As an experienced business leader, I understand the challenges our clients face everyday. Our aim is to change recruitment and development thinking from transactional to continuum focused, whilst also supporting business leaders to leverage the best results from all their staff, not just the new ones! Succession strategies are built from the bottom up and we identify and develop the leaders of tomorrow.” Firestarter believes that for any business to prosper, it needs a balanced approach and people with the right combination of four operational styles: Igniters These are entrepreneurial types; vision makers who are observant, fast paced and impatient. They are spontaneous

and inventive, always spotting new opportunities. Deployers The action and task oriented types, keen on having structure and process. They are highly practical, meticulous and traditional, embracing and creating order and stability wherever they go. They are keen on execution and completion. Engagers These people are charismatic and engaging, intuitive thinkers who are cooperative, empathetic and imaginative. They are great team players who focus on building strong networks to bring people together and make things happen. Analysts They are intuitive analytical thinkers who prefer facts to fiction and they focus on data and trends. They are very thorough and detail focused with a need for structure and process to drive the decision making process through analysis. The Firestarter model is designed to identify true Firestarters; people who fit the profiles, behaviour and attitudes to

make a difference and get results, not just to fill a seat. Since the company was established, Firestarter has worked with 25 different businesses and the majority has engaged them for up to 24 month periods on business transformation projects. The goal at Firestarter is to always ‘start the fire’ but then put all the pieces in place to make each client self-sustainable. In 2015, they are looking forward to expanding their team, supporting local business and the community and offering their expertise into other parts of the country too. Growing even stronger… Developing niche areas and supporting growth, Laura-Jayne Roberts, lifts the lid on Harrison Clark Rickerbys’ plans for 2015.... With the extremely successful merger of two legal firms it is no surprise that this particular company has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. The strongest, 200-year-old legal firm in Gloucestershire, Rickerbys, joining forces with the solid Worcestershire and Herefordshire based, Harrison Clark, was a match made in heaven. As Harrison Clark Rickerbys looks forward to 2015, it was surely the best decision ever made. Partner and Head of the Cheltenham Office at Harrison Clark Rickerbys (HCR), Jon Whitbread, said: “In late 2012, early 2013, discussions started about putting the two practices together to give us a dominant position across the Three Counties base. There was lots of common interest, synergies and links across the two practices and we brought everyone together in the middle of 2013.” Eighteen months later and they have not looked back. Forty members of staff from the Cheltenham Harrison Clark side merged with an office of over a hundred from the Rickerbys camp. Thoughts from the smaller camp may have held worries of being swamped, but as Jon describes, the Rickerbys team could not have been more welcoming. “Everyone had a positive can-do attitude to making it work. Inevitably there was time needed to get the two parts of the business to fit together but getting everyone together in one office was definitely key. By September 2013 we were getting new trainees joining the business and you would hear them say, ‘the merger is so good as you can’t tell who was a Rickerbys person and who was a Harrison Clark person.’ Someone new to the business couldn’t tell, which was the best test.” Clearly delighted with how the merger has gone Jon, previous employee of Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co, continued: “In terms of clients, I think we now have greater strength and depth.

110 JANUARY 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE

There is a clear focus on the client experience and delivering the best services. We are more proactive, thinking about what opportunities and introductions we can make to the client and are actively looking at opportunities for them. “I think from Harrison Clark we are able to bring more in terms of combination and I think the Rickerbys side bring the strength of connections and clients across the county, with their wealth of experience from being in business for over 200 years, and putting all that together means it has gone amazingly well.” Having recently developed the HCR Thames Valley office, which has grown from one person to 16, the staff figure across all offices now stands at 360. “Everyone has the attitude of heads down, work together and go for it. Maybe it has worked out better because of the improving market, but I would like to think it would have worked out anyway,” added Jon. With over 150 staff in Cheltenham alone, HCR have been on a great journey and with regards to the traction and getting people to work together, Jon believes it has only just started. He said: “There are a number of key strategic relationships we have been building. Locally for example, with Jelf insurance brokers we have a brilliant relationship, which we value hugely. These key relationships are working for both sides now. From the private client to the business services, everyone is very busy.” HCR seek to look at all their work from the clients’ perspective, asking themselves the essential questions of, where are they doing well and where can they do better? Ultimately HCR are looking at what a client wants to buy, rather than at traditional legal disciplines, and consequently breaking this need

down to look at tailored services for clients. “Other law firms don’t do this, it is a totally new offering. We have got a very strong finance package now in terms of how we can help with the expense of legal work. We have some senior people from the world of finance that now work for us as consultants in this area,” said Jon. Another totally new offering in 2015 by the firm is a brand new specialist legal services team for the older and vulnerable services sector. Partner of HCR and head of the Older and Vulnerable Client services team, Phillipa Bruce-Kerr said: “We have recently established as a separate service team and our formal launch is in January. For about five and a half years we have been gradually building up the expertise for the team, but it has only been this year with the merger and the slightly bigger geographical area, plus the greater number of people with the interest and knowledge, that we are able to actually form the specialist group. “With the new team I am looking forward to developing and raising the profile so that more people understand what it is we can do and how we can support them. The sort of work that we are doing can be looked at in two contexts, one is services to older clients and their families and carers, and the other side is advice to what are generically described as vulnerable clients. Now we are fully formed and established we can go out there and talk to people more about what we can offer, and therefore, as a result, be in a position to help more of them.” Jon reiterated: “It is great to bring together a team to support a massive market and area of the community who need specialist support, whether it is older people, choice of care homes, or people who may have been in a terrible accident and require life long care. Having

a tailored legal service and all those specialists available in one team is fantastic for clients.” With some brilliant lawyers, HCR are not only recruiting some of the best local people across the Three Counties but are pulling in some phenomenal quality lawyers from Birmingham, Bristol, and London, who all have a passion for quality. Jon said: “There is a great attraction for coming into the firm. We want to have a really balanced practice between private clients and corporate services and between local work and local companies. We also want to be able to pull in some big ticket work nationally and internationally, which would generate opportunities for many, which can only be a strong thing for the local business community.” Never a retiring company, HCR have great plans to build on what they have already achieved across the Three Counties, promoting the fact that these areas are a great place to do business and that travelling to Bristol or London for top quality legal services, is no longer necessary. Jon explained: “The key is to promote the strength of the professional services and disciplines that we have got.

There are many major corporates and even local authorities in Gloucestershire that feel the need to go outside the county boundaries for advice. The lawyers we have will go toe-to-toe with any lawyers in the country in terms of quality, but we are on the doorstep, partner led, and will be cheaper. This proposition sits well with clients and recruitment. As long as that continues, hopefully the growth will follow. “What I enjoy most about the Harrison Clark Rickerbys experience is the thrill of building something and being part of something that is really going somewhere. We have come along way. Many law firms in the past seven years have stayed the same in terms of size and turnover. I think in that period we have grown three or four times the size. I don’t need to analyse it too much, but whatever we are doing we need to do more of the same.” For anyone looking to join the firm Jon describes the company like a ‘grow bag’; a fertile base for someone who has a dream to come in with their own skills, regardless of connections and relationships, but just with the drive and desire to build something in an area they are passionate about. He said: “If you get

the right person and support them, then they will flourish. All good people need is just the right environment to grow. “Seeing the company go from strength to strength, and digesting the positive feedback from clients is such a buzz, and always will be.” For 2015, the motto has to be ‘never say never’ with Harrison Clark Rickerbys. Jon added: “In terms of our offices, the base we have got and the key people in the company, it is now a case of developing and supporting these people in these niche areas, which will be the focus for this year and we will see where we go beyond there.” Harrison Clark Rickerby Ellenborough House Wellington Street Cheltenham GL50 1YD Tel: 01242 224 422 www.hcrlaw.com

A NEW CHAPTER… Following the recession for most property development companies, 2015 will be the year of increased business, increased hope and increased opportunities. While this is no different for Gloucestershire based regional developer, Robert Hitchins Limited, 2015 will be different. It will also be the year of great change. In May 2015 after 27 years as a director Chris Haslam will pass the baton to Simon Tothill, who recently accepted the appointment and joined the company. A reflective time for Chris and colleagues, but nevertheless an inevitable chapter for a company, with a long history and an extremely bright future. Founded in the fifties, Robert Hitchins Limited started life as a house builder in Gloucestershire, and during its peak was building around 500 properties a year. About 15-years-ago a strategic decision was taken to concentrate on commercial property development and investment and strategic land .The

company now operates regionally encompassing Gloucestershire, Avon, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and South Wales. Chris reflected: “Over the last five or six years, during the recession, it has been very hard for the whole property industry. We were not really expanding the property side, but just managing the properties we had and there was very little development. We kept things on a level playing field, which we were able to do successfully. 2014 saw a big

improvement in the property market and economy, which we have seen filter through in all sectors.” The companies development program has started again and is expanding, watching an increase in businesses taking longer-term leases and therefore in respect of Robert Hitchins property portfolio, vacancy levels are falling and the rental income is growing. Chris added: “We have done a bit of work over the last few years with Asda and Sainsbury’s but we’re seeing a reduction of activity in the large store developments, although there is still activity with the discounters and smaller store formats.” Simon, joined from Eagle Land, where he was a director, and lives just south of Bristol with his wife and three children. He commented: “I think things are looking much rosier than they have been

during the course of the last five or six years, which has been very difficult for every commercial property company. Occupier demand is beginning to return in all sectors and certainly in terms of office and industrial requirements, we are finding there are a lot more companies now willing to take the plunge, and look to expand and move premises. “I think confidence is building and we just have to keep pushing that confidence,” he added. With a number of potential developments to start shortly, Robert Hitchins are still looking for further land and development opportunities, in all sectors, within the region. “We are well financed and in terms of going forward as a business we have got a very good track record and know the markets in the areas where we operate. The team that work at Robert Hitchins know and understand the their tenants, not just in terms of letting or selling them space, it is an on going relationship, which is really important,” says Simon. “We pride ourselves on being a regional business which actually understands and knows the occupier market, and once we have done the development we don’t walk away, but continue that relationship,” he added. For Robert Hitchins understanding a business and what their requirements are is critical. “At the end of the day we need to develop a building which is actually going to be working for that business, for a number of years going forward. If we get that right, and they have further requirements they will come back and talk to us, and this has been the case numerous times in the past,” said Simon. Chris further highlighted: “In any business or any industry you have to be open to change, and you have to accept things don’t stay as they are even if you would like them to. The world doesn’t stay the same all the time. You have got to embrace change.” Simon added: “We’re in the business of change, people can find that difficult. Our job is explaining to people the reason we’re bringing this change is actually for the better. We work with

The Courtyard, Tewkesbury

companies and members of the community in various areas, developing and bringing property forward. We also retain a lot of our developments and have some significant investments throughout the region.” Future objectives for Robert Hitchins are clear. They have a large property portfolio, with the goal being to secure, acquire and develop a significant amount of additional commercial property. They wish to increase existing development activity while growing and modernizing their existing portfolio. Chris has established a very close-knit team with strong relations within Gloucestershire but also in the other areas that Roberts Hitchins operate in. Simon said: “We are always looking for land and property opportunities and will take a long term view. We are not focusing purely on offices, industrial or retail, it really depends on the particular market at what particular time, and what opportunity becomes available.” With their ‘open door’ policy at Robert Hitchins, Simon stressed: “We encourage people and businesses to come and talk to us about what they would like to achieve and we will see whether we can assist, if we can’t we will say and will try and come up with alternative ideas.” Chris said: “My advice

to businesses would be to talk to us well in advance so the right property solution can be developed. Because obviously property does take time and many businesses leave it to the last minute. The thing is to plan one’s property strategy at an early stage then you’ve got more options open to you. Reflecting on his retirement later this year Chris added: “Timing is everything and there is a time for everything. I’m a great believer you should stop at the appropriate time. I will miss the buzz I have always got out of property. It has been such a part of my life it will be quite a wrench when it stops, but the next stage of my life hopefully will be as fulfilling as well, watch this space!” The next stage for Roberts Hitchins is an extremely bright one as they move onto their next chapter, with Simon stating, “Confidence is growing, and I think there are good times ahead.” Robert Hitchins Limited The Manor, Boddington, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL51 0TJ Tel: 01242 680694 Email: enquiries@robert-hitchins.co.uk www.robert-hitchins.co.uk

Promise and potential… Eric Barton pays attention in class at The King’s School, Gloucester There has been a school associated with Gloucester Cathedral, or St. Peter's Abbey as it was known, since the 12th century. Henry VIII established the Cathedral and a school known as the "College School’’ in 1541.The statutes at the time required the master of the school to be "skilful in Latin and Greek, of good fame, and a godly life, be well qualified for teaching, whose training may up in piety those children who shall resort to our school for grammar". Some things may have changed at The King’s School in recent times, but many of the

traditions are still thriving, such as morning assembly every day being held in the historic Cathedral setting. With around 530 girls and boys, King’s is split between Junior and Senior School, where pupils aged from 3 -18 years are taught. Anne Haas, who is Head of Junior School, hails from South Africa, arriving in the UK in 2000. After a spell of supply teaching, Anne was appointed as Deputy Head at Rendcomb College. Anne comments on her move to the UK, ‘’It was a great learning curve coming

from South African schools into the British system and the ten years I had at Rendcomb really sealed my decision to stay in the UK’’. Anne arrived at King’s in September 2014 and immediately felt at home, ’I knew from day one that I belonged here and that this was the school for me’’. Anne went on to say, ‘In Junior School we have just 131 pupils with ages ranging from three to 11 years old and have 24 teaching staff. Our class sizes are small which means that we can give each and every pupil the attention they deserve. The support I receive

from the Junior School Management Team is also a major element of the success we have here’’. The Junior School at King’s is indeed a happy and secure environment where children can achieve their full potential, something that they firmly believe in at King's. It starts with their Kindergarten children and carries right on through all the years they spend in Junior School. Class sizes seldom exceed 16 pupils, so each child receives individual attention from inspirational teachers. Anne Haas further says, ’I’m not about making any sweeping changes here at King’s. They have a long tradition of providing an excellent platform for young children to grow, learn and develop as individuals, importantly the teaching ethos here is well-embedded and very strong’’. Anne also adds, ‘On my very first day here I toured the school with two children, this was a great opportunity to gain insight into a school from two of its younger pupils. At King’s they ensure Junior School is fun and stimulating where learning and participation are celebrated. Their family-orientated, community atmosphere provides the perfect environment for each child to develop their true potential and make a successful progression to senior education at the age of 11. King’s Senior School continues to nurture this strong sense of community and identity and offers yet more opportunities for pupils to thrive. Seven years ago, Alistair Macnaughton, took over the reins as Head Master of King’s Senior School. This most engaging chess-playing Scotsman was very keen to make a few initial points saying, ‘’ My predecessor had done a fabulous job here. So I did have some very big boots to fill. This is a great school with great traditions.’’ The King's School, Gloucester is in fact also one of the seven famous Cathedral schools. Alistair Macnaughton goes on to comment, ‘’Classroom practice is still at the very core of what we do here at King’s’’. He adds, ‘’academic edge matters and we always endeavour to fully engage with the pupils. We make it

Alistair Macnaughton

our business to know everything about our pupils. It’s all part of the engagement process in which they know that we have their best interests at heart’’. At King’s the teaching staff are justly proud, not only of their students' considerable academic success, but of their achievements in music, sport and the expressive arts. The unique keystones approach used at King’s identifies and develops individual talents and personal qualities, and coupled with outstanding pastoral care, offers children the chance to really fulfil their potential. Alistair Macnaughton further says, ‘’Achieving the very best grades we can for our students is the most fundamental thing we do here. Having said that, personal skills together with sport and the performing arts do play an integral part in school life, producing well-rounded adults ready to take their place in society’’. With around 400 pupils in Senior School and 75 teaching staff, the pupil to teacher ratio is extremely good with only 15/16 pupils in each class, enabling better and closer teaching methods. In some ways we all know we can easily disappear in a crowd, that doesn’t happen at King’s. Next year an expansion of the performing arts facilities is planned. As Alistair explains,

“Academic edge matters and we always endeavour to fully engage with the pupils. We make it our business to know everything about our pupils.“

‘’We’ve hugely enjoyed having a new sports hall here for the past three years, but now the performing arts is firmly on my radar too’’. Alistair finally says, ‘’Some of the older traditions here at King’s are the best ones and do stand us in good stead for today’s modern challenges. It’s our duty here to prepare our pupils for either higher education, or to be ready to take their place in the wider world’’. There’s a lot be said for traditions coupled with modern thinking…and the combination of these elements at King’s means that their pupils leave the school having benefitted from first class teaching, a powerful sense of community, and a strong moral framework. Suit the City brings Savile Row style to the Cotswolds Emma Logan meets Chris Vine, who runs a luxury, bespoke tailoring service for men and women Savile Row has long been a by-word for superior quality and a beautiful suit, shirt or jacket from London’s finest remains an aspiration for many of us. After all, who wouldn’t want a garment or outfit that’s been created to fit perfectly, looks great and makes you feel wonderful? Now Suit the City is about to make sartorial dreams come true for both

male and female clients in the Cotswolds. The made-to-measure tailors have opened for business in Gloucestershire, their style consultants are mobile and come to you to offer their exclusive personal service. Of course, the added benefit is that you no longer need to travel to London to be fitted, (although they do have a fitting

facility in Savile Row for those who do wish to travel to London on business or for a day out!). All of this service comes at around a third of the prices usually charged by Savile Row tailors. The company uses only the finest Savile Row fabrics, all clothing is produced in their European factories, rather than being sourced from unregulated labour somewhere in the Far East; this means that customers can rest easy knowing that the tailors are paid a fair wage and their luxury clothing is produced ethically. So if you want that extra-stylish something for a special event or simply like to look good every day of the week, Suit the City will arrange to come to a place most convenient for you perhaps your home or place of work, where you will have an individual consultation. personalised service and an attractive price-tag. You may also be aware of the Suit the Country brand, for stylish madeto-measure weekend and country wear, launched a while ago in Cotswold Style. Chris Vine, the face of Suit the City in the Cotswolds is convinced that this blend of top quality, style and service will be a winner. He has a long pedigree in business and understands the importance of feeling confident and comfortable, particularly for professional people and for those who enjoy countryside pursuits. “We offer an incredible range of fabrics, including traditional worsteds,

tweeds and stylish cashmeres, so whether you’re a business professional needing smart, stylish suits or a keen country person looking for classical outfitting, we can cater to all,” he says. Chris believes service is at the heart of Suit the City’s appeal. For those who either don’t have the time or the inclination to shop for clothes, the idea of having a trained professional guide them through the process of selection and measuring without the awkward ‘suits you sir’ embarrassment, then delivering to your home six to eight weeks later, seems a service to die for. “Once we have a customer’s

measurements, we can simply create whatever they want, with different styles, colours and fabrics,” Chris concludes. “Suit the City offers so much more than beautifully cut clothes, it really is a lifestyle choice!” For more details, contact Suit the City on 0800 011 2450 www.suitthecity.com www.suitthecountry.com

Review

TIME TO DISCOVER A NEW YOU AT THE ÉLAN SPA Mark and Rachael Hopkins review a decadent spa on the outskirts of Cheltenham How do you make a good day great? Simple, a visit to the Élan Spa at the Greenway Hotel. Let yourself be pampered with a treatment or two; take a dip in the hydrotherapy pool, fade away in the alfresco hot tub or sit in front of the wood burner on the terrace. Blow off a little steam in the fitness suite then soothe those tired muscles in the sauna or steam room not forgetting the fun of the experience shower - these are a few of the choices at this beautifully kept little secret near to Cheltenham. From the second you drive through the gates to the Greenway Hotel and Élan Spa, you feel special. The quintessential driveway builds your anticipation with its tall, green hedgerow opening up to the courtyard parking in front of the charming 16th century, luxury, Elizabethan manor house hotel and spa. On arriving at 11am we were greeted by the delightful Mary Smith, manager of the Élan Spa, who started our day with an informal consultation over a pot of tea in the elegant orchard brasserie. During the consultation you can select the treatments you wish and whilst putting you at ease, it underlines the spa's commitment to its guests’ comfort and well-being. After this we were given a small tour of the facilities then presented with robes, slippers and towels and left to enjoy. The pool is kept at a comfortable, tropical temperature and incorporated within, are two hydrotherapy sections. There are plenty of comfortable loungers around the edges to relax, the two saunas are a good size, the steam room is cleverly designed with tranquil blue lighting that offers a roomy, starry feel and then there is the shower experience: push the button for Caribbean Storm, shut your eyes and enjoy. The state of the art fitness suite is simple and well equipped with fabulous views of the Cotswold hills. Lunch was served in the Orchard Brasserie which is informal, so no need

to dress for lunch. We sat comfortably in our robes while being treated to some fine dining enjoying two courses. Rachael started with potted shrimp followed by steamed pollack and fresh garden vegetables and I had the cauliflower soup, followed with chicken caesar salad; all was beautifully presented and delicious. Lunch was a very relaxing, laid back experience where we were unassumingly but impeccably looked after. The hot tub became our venue to ponder after the delightful lunch we had just enjoyed, with enough time for a swim before our treatments. Our therapist collected us from the Relaxation Zone and escorted us to our

treatment rooms, which offer a full range treatments from head to toe. The Skin Clinic Collection offers microdermabrasion that takes years of your complexion by gently exfoliating the outer layers of skin and there is also a Champagne manicure bar. I chose the Egyptian massage. Rocky, my masseuse showed me to my room which was tranquil, warm and very relaxing, offering soft music with no distracting ambient noise. I was very impressed with the ease in which Rocky delivered my hour long massage. Rachael started with the 45 minute back, neck and shoulder massage and a 45 minute microdermabrasion facial with Lauren, followed by a 15 minute Champagne manicure and mini polish with Bianca. She was so impressed with the microdermabrasion she called the next day and booked further treatments. All in all the Élan Spa at the Greenway Hotel offers a complete luxury experience in an oasis of tranquillity and sophisticated relaxation. The elegance of its surroundings seems to inspire this best kept secret near Cheltenham. The Greenway Hotel & Spa Tel: 01242 862080 www.thegreenwayhotelandspa.com

Shelle Duffin creates... A Crumbled Resolution

Having over-indulged in the festive period with turkey, mince pies and chocolate treats, washed down with copious amounts of delicious mulled wine, I can only imagine that if you’re anything like me, the diets and detox will be in full swing. I’ve always found January to be quite dull - the come down from Christmas, the strain of keeping those all-important resolutions in action and the cold, dark days that brutally remind us that we are still in winter. However, rather than put you in a total state of doom and gloom,

let me instead arouse your taste buds and get 2015 off to a mouth-watering start. Cooking in January can be made fun and adventurous for budding cooks at any level of ability. In an attempt to save those last remaining pennies and keep the bank manager at bay, seize the chance to empty out those cupboards and use up leftovers from the Christmas season. This is your opportunity to get gutsy in the kitchen, sampling new flavours and mixing them up to make a delicious dish. There is nothing more thrilling than creating a new recipe of your own

combinations; this is how the best chefs learn! As the cold days linger on, there remains a demand for satisfying comfort food – warming, stirring and nurturing ingredients into scrumptious and hearty casseroles and soups. My recipe this month demonstrates a dish you can produce using leftover ingredients from the yuletide season, without interfering too much with your resolutions. However, don’t axe the calories too drastically - a few here and there are perfectly justifiable throughout the winter months!

Method • Preheat the oven to 180ºC • In a large pan, melt the butter and add the garlic, onion, pancetta, cooking for a few minutes until they soften • Add the chicken and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally • Add the leeks, thyme and sage and cook for a further 5 minutes • Mix in the flour, stirring until all the mixture is covered and then add the stock, allowing to simmer for 5 minutes • Once the mixture has thickened, add the

wine, redcurrant jelly and mustard • Season well with salt and pepper • Add the mushrooms and cook for a few minutes on a low heat whilst you prepare the crumble • Place all the crumble ingredients into a food processor and blend until it reaches a crumble consistency • Pour the chicken mixture into an oven proof dish and cover it with a layer of the crumble topping • Place the crumble in the oven and cook for 30-40 minutes until the top is.

Chicken Crumble Serves 6 generously (*if there are any leftovers, this dish is suitable for the freezer) 5 free range chicken breasts, diced 200g chopped pancetta 2 leeks – chopped 1 onion – finely chopped 3 garlic cloves – crushed Bunch of thyme Bunch of sage – chopped 3 bay leaved 250ml white wine ½ pint chicken stock 200g button mushrooms 3tbsp flour 1tbsp redcurrant jelly 1tbsp Dijon mustard A knob of butter Salt & Pepper

For Crumble topping: 4 slices wholemeal bread 200g chestnuts 200g smoked cheddar, grated 100g dried cranberries Bunch of fresh sage, roughly chopped 1tbsp redcurrant jelly 1tsp Dijon mustard Salt & Pepper

Interview

R&R A monthly column exploring the perfect location to clear your head and spend quality time with the ‘lovely one’ in your life This month Emma Logan reviews The Manor House at Castle Combe Castle Combe may be a hotspot of Motor Racing but have you ever ventured beyond the track into the village? If not, you have missed what is often referred to as ‘the prettiest village in England’. It is one of the Cotswolds’ most picturesque settings and bordering against the Bybrook River is an ancient 14th century stately home, The Manor House Hotel, set in 365 acres of parkland with secluded waterfalls and Italian gardens. High on the hill within the estate lays the 18-hole, Manor House Golf Club. Designed in 1992 by renowned golf commentator Peter Allis and his design partner Clive Clarke, the course is widely regarded as one of the finest in the South West. During these cold, winter months there is nothing more comforting that walking into the fine entrance hall to be greeted by a huge, roaring fire and a fabulous cup of tea. The chap, KB and I were invited to spend a night at The Manor to luxuriate in all the splendour that is on offer. Our bedroom was really very special. Designed by prominent interior designer Nicholas Haslam, it was exquisitely furnished and once collapsing on the striking four-poster bed we were reluctant to leave! The comfort of the room is palpable with a restful seating area to relax and a bathroom of pure indulgence. With a lavish walk-in shower and exceptional amenities, the piece de resistance was a large soaking tub complete with TV at the end of the bath. The Bybrook Restaurant served a delightful dinner created by Michelin starred chef, Richard Davies. My first course was an ensemble of hand dived scallops with apple, walnut, cauliflower and pickled shallot followed by a main course of pan fried fillet of Cornish turbot, accompanied by cepe, celeriac and a pancetta fricassee. KB chose the Torchon of duck liver, orange and ginger bread followed by the Manor House old

spot pork, braised cheek with a pickled white cabbage and carrot puree. The food was out of this world, unpretentious but worthy of its Michelin star heritage, served by charming and friendly but discreet staff. On waking to a glorious sunny and frosty morning, the views into the garden from the restaurant are breathtaking. One has to continue the eating extravaganza and enjoy traditional breakfasts from the full English to fine smoked salmon and locally cured ham with freshly squeezed juice. For the non-golfers amongst you, pack your wellies and explore this vast area of

un-spoilt Cotswold landscape. You can walk for hours and actually have an opportunity of seclusion with your own thoughts and conversation. In this modern era of being time-poor and overworked The Manor House is just the kind of hotel to take the lovely one in your life away to, especially without the children. It is amazing how even one night locally can recharge those batteries and swell the love you both share! A different kind of sport for the whole family Here we are it’s January 2015. The New Year’s fitness resolutions have started but how long will they last?…. asks Shane Duff

For some, Christmas is a hectic period and normality will be welcomed. For others it will be onto the next event or holiday to plan. If I was picking holidays for people, I would certainly recommend a trip to the mountains for a bout of skiing or snowboarding. I made my debut trip last year to French ski resort Val d’Isère and loved every minute of it, even if I did master the ‘face plant’ leaving my face all cut up, battered and bruised! I have been thinking of all the reasons why a winter trip would be the holiday of choice and would I choose one over a sun holiday if I were to choose.

SCHOOL

Here are a few reasons to go skiing: 1. Most folk generally look better in a ski suit than they do in a swim suit. If you have any doubts just tune into the next winter Olympics; the athletes as well as the supporters all looking a million dollars in their fluorescent outfits, sunglasses and woolly hats. That cannot always be said for the next beach you are lucky enough to sit on. 2. The hillside views are something else. Every chair lift you climb onto gives you the next best view you’ve never seen before. A bird’s eye view of a sunbathed

snow mountain is a pretty impressive sight. I am not one to put pictures on canvas but I must admit that I had one made up as soon as we were home. 3. It can be a sport to involve the whole family. Different grades of slopes to suit all needs and plenty of pit stops should you need a rest. I found myself in awe of the young ones. They were everything I wasn’t: fearless, smooth, fast and aesthetically pleasing. 4. Après ski. When the sunlight drops off you can be sure to find an establishment that will be full of people looking to unwind and loosen up a little bit. A great place to meet new people. We met some great people from the North West and we are still in touch now. 5. If it helps make up your mind, skiing can be a serious calorie burner. 400500 calories an hour I am told. Not bad for a holiday. I may not have plans to ski this year but I am actively working out a way to make it happen regularly in years to come. Twitter: @duffo16

TRIAL DAY TIPS at CHELTENHAM RACES Betlive Radio’s expert racing pundit Nigel Aplin, looks at the Form for January he Colonel thought this an excellent ruse, especially as it afforded the racing buffs an opportunity to debate the merits of Cheltenham Trials Day on Saturday January 24. The question he submitted, M’lud, is to how real a guide is this, to the actual Cheltenham Festival? The JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial kicks off Cheltenham Trials Day but has not been as good a trial as you might expect. Of its last 18 winners who attempted to follow up in the Triumph Hurdle, only Katchit has succeeded. Last year’s winner, Rolling Star, was punted into 5/2 favourite for the Triumph but could only finish sixth. The Argento Chase was a terrific Gold Cup not so long ago, with Master Oats (1st), See More Business (3rd) and Looks Like Trouble (1st) contesting that prize between 1995-2000 before going on to land the Blue Riband. The best recent Gold Cup efforts of Argento Chase runners, were Exotic Dancer’s second to Kauto Star, after winning this trial in

T

2007 and Neptune Collonges finishing third in both races in 2008. The Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle has been a fair Festival pointer to the race of the same title at the Festival, over 2m5f but a very notable guide to the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, as Wichita Lineman, Bobs Worth and At Fishers Cross have all completed the double in the last seven years. The Cleeve Hurdle has been the most pertinent Ladbrokes World Hurdle guide featuring four winners with two wins apiece for Inglis Drever and Big Buck’s. In fact, going back to and including 2007, seven of the 12 horses to finish in the first two in the World Hurdle, prepped in the Cleeve as this is where Punchestowns, Time For Rupert and Grands Crus ran in successive years, ahead of finishing second in the staying hurdle championship. The renovations carry on apace at the racecourse itself and there are already new features in place. The successor to

Ed Gillespie, Ian Renton, is very confident that attendances will continue to increase and that the new facilities reinforce Cheltenham’s position as a leading, global, racing venue; certainly the best for all National Hunt enthusiasts. January is always a good time for Festival Seers to read the runes and I can pass on positive mentions for Valseur Lido at 10/1 for the RSA Chase, Balder Succes 8/1 for The Queen Mother Champion Chase, L’ami Serge wherever Nicky Henderson runs it, and Faugheen for The Champion Hurdle. The Cheltenham Gold Cup is very open this year but Boston Bob at 25/1 makes each way appeal at a big price. And so to the run into The Cheltenham Festival in March and the annual jamboree in Letitia’s box, she’s a game girl. Nigel Aplin, formally Head Of Broadcast for William Hill, is founder of www.betliveradio.com which features a daily digest of betting banter.

KYDD FITNESS program to get you off on the right start for 2015 Fitness Expert Luciano Kydd shows you the ropes Even though I’m a sound believer that you don’t need a Monday to start a healthy nutritional eating habit, or the new year to begin a new healthy lifestyle, here is a basic training programme set for one day of the week, to get focussed for the first weeks of January. If you’re unsure where to start, and your goal is fatloss, while building lean athletic muscle mass (which is the way to go to improve your overall body composition), then this a programme for you. All the

exercises are performed in a superset fashion. For example, exercises marked A1 & A2; perform one set of A1 then one set of A2, return to A1 and repeat till that set is complete. Each week progressively increase from 2, 3 and ending on 4 sets. During rest periods start off high, then decrease from 75, to 60, to 45 seconds unless stated. For those readers who might not be familiar with using TEMPO in their training, here’s a brief explaination; when you see 3010 - The

BACK SQUAT REPS: 8-10 SET: 2/3/4 TEMPO: 40XO REST: 75/60/45 seconds

3 means slow lowering phase of the exercises, 0-means no pause in this position, 1-means a return of 1 second, unless where you see X which means an explosive return, using good form and technique. The last number, in this case 1-means how many seconds till the lift is repeated. Point to note, the tempo must be followed to achieve the appropriate training stimilus, while keep an eye on your rest periods.

LYING LEG CURL REPS: 8-10 SETS: 2/3/4 TEMPO: 4010 REST: 75/60/45 seconds

Peak condition Ski Instructor Zany Anton-Smith’s Guide to Fitness on the Slopes My wake up call comes around the same time as the first snow starts to blanket the Alps heralding the time to dig out the ski kit and discover whether it still fits. It’s an often shocking but true indicator of just how much we have all grown since it was last worn in March. Just like Christmas, it’s a time filled with angst and excitement for most members of our family. I can already hear the children squeal with delight as they discover that last year’s salopettes are now skimming their calves. They eagerly assume the classic ski exercise, sitting on ‘invisible’ chairs against the wall with their thighs horizontal, holding the position for as long as they can until their quads start burning. Meanwhile I breathe deeply and gingerly zip myself into my bulky, insulated suit and make a pact with myself to embark on a proper fitness routine before hitting the slopes. Even with a long lunch stop and time on lifts the average skier is exercising between 4-5 hours a day in short sharp bursts at altitude and burning around 400 calories an hour. A cheese fondu is therefore totally justified but without some fitness training in preparation you could find yourself worn out by day two

with every muscle in your body aching and a distinctly withering stamina. I am by no means a fitness instructor but what I do know is that by working on your cardio, core strength and flexibility in the run up to a ski holiday, you will not only increase your performance and enjoyment on the slopes but most importantly avoid injury. In my experience as a ski instructor with the Swiss Ski School, we would start every lesson with an obligatory ‘echauffement’. This involved a series of energetic warm up and flexibility exercises on the snow to raise the heart rate and stretch muscles. So many injuries from crashes happen when bodies are very stiff and inflexible. The glutes, quads, core and calf muscles are the ones to focus on. If you are a runner, try running up some hills or embarking on some interval training (running for a minute, walking for a minute repeatedly), which increases fitness massively. If you are a walker try hiking up hills and pick up the pace until you are struggling to hold a conversation. If gardening is your thing then perhaps rake up leaves vigorously while bracing your core. Or ditch the road bike and get on the mountain bike to increase resistance.

“I breathe deeply and gingerly zip myself into my bulky, insulated suit and make a pact with myself to embark on a proper fitness routine before hitting the slopes.” Whatever sport you are into try and adapt it to focus on these muscles. Lunge deeper at the ballet bar, add an extra step in your step classes, turn up the resistance on your spinning bike or increase the gradient on your treadmill or cross trainer. For me crunches, lunges, press ups and the plank position are going to form part of my morning ritual and lunch hours will now involve running up Bredon Hill with the dog until we are both out of breath. With any hope I will then not only glide into last year’s ski kit but glide down those snowy slopes in peak condition! OUT WITH THE OLD – IN WITH THE NEW… Claire Thayers’ ruthless guide to uncluttering

hat a great saying … and when better to embrace this but the start of a new year. Friends have told me that in order to make room for new and exciting things in your life you have to do a bit of life laundering and when better to embrace this than now, a New Year’s resolution. The nights are long, the days are dull, wet and uninviting so it’s a good use of time – take it from one who knows how wonderful and uplifting it is. Where better to start than the bedroom, especially if you have been given some of the sexy, new Victoria Secrets lingerie for Christmas (well one can but hope!), liberate yourself from the tyranny of the ubiquitous, grey, Bridget Jones knickers that used to be white in a previous life – what classics we have buried away. Be decisive, brave the wardrobe and if a particular item does not make you feel wonderful, then into the bin bag it goes. We’ve all done it – I had a stage when brown was ‘in’ but whenever I wore it I felt really depressed. Then there’s the bargain sale item that was ‘too good to

W

miss’ but you’ve never worn and never mind those items that have shrunk in the wash, which of course is nothing to do with an over indulgent Christmas you understand. I cannot tell you how good it feels, taking bulging bags to the local charity shop. But beware – I have friends who have driven past the same shop some weeks later and actually gone in to buy the item that they donated because it looked so good in the window, not realising it was theirs in the first place! Then the kitchen… Every year I manage to trawl through the shelves and bin all the out of date tins and jars of odds and sods. The conundrum is (a bit like the mystery of too many Tupperware tops and numerous odd socks), how there is always one jar of dusty mixed herbs that seems to be ten years out of date, alongside the moldy, mango chutney. Also, bin the stuff that has been bought on an impulse like a ‘must have jar of Jerk’ that has been pushed to the back of the cupboard. Make space for the next Waitrose wonder ingredient! But the ultimate clear out for me was ten years ago when I managed to de-

clutter my life, by binning the husband! It all came to a head in the local Homebase – years of rejection, being put down, argued with and ignored … I had lost my confidence and sparkle and felt worthless – even my choice of paint wasn’t listened to, let alone the colour. Painful beyond belief, it all came to a head and the lid finally popped off. I apologise unreservedly to those who witnessed my melt down in the Farrow & Ball aisle – they must have thought I was sobbing over the price! I can laugh about it now, mascara running down my face, unable to move due to the hysteria but in truth, the tears were mainly down to the frustration of not being able to vocalise the years of anger. Holding it together for the sake of the children over Christmas, the Homebase experience was the last straw. (I am sure there is a ‘straw’ shade in the Farrow & Ball catalogue – in fact, I must buy some for the new house.) So, ten years on – do I regret it? I sit typing this at a table whilst breakfasting in a Scottish hotel, ironically, prior to a wedding … NOT my next one I must add! Yes its been tough, its been emotional, its been liberating, its been scary but ultimately, its been rewarding and empowering. Do I miss him? Only on bin day! So be brave - face your fears and strike out, take a leap of faith, be true to yourself and above all, believe in YOU. Remember it’s a new year, time is precious and we all deserve to be happy, so think long and hard and make some choices. Life laundry is recommended whether it involves binning the ‘jerk’ in the kitchen or the jerk in the bed – just do it! P. S. I am still waiting for ‘the new’ but rest assured I’m having fun looking and besides I have the Scottish wedding to look forward to… a man in a skirt would be a first! Freedom to ski.... with the children Meet Lucy Anderson, owner of Petit Verbier, a company that specialises in providing expert childcare and concierge services throughout the Alps It’s changed days if your last experience of a family ski holiday was twenty children strewn across the mountain as the suave French speaking instructor stopped for a swift Gitane and vin rouge half way down the mountain. Now it’s kids clubs, soft play areas in mountain restaurants, British nannies and well qualified, English speaking ski instructors. It’s easy. You don’t even have to brave the ski shop on arrival, the expert boot fitters will come to your chalet/hotel, measure you up and your pristine ski’s and boots are ready for you to hit the slopes on your first morning. This month, we are looking at family ski holidays in the Alps with Lucy Anderson, mother of two expert miniskiers, who is the ‘go to’ person for all aspects of organising a family ski holiday in Verbier and many other resorts in the Alps. Lets be honest, we are all looking to achieve the goal – a beautiful sunny day in the Alps, a light dusting of powder on freshly groomed slopes, as we the parents look on proudly as the kids shred it up. Awesome! Services like Petit Verbier, Verbier’s long established nanny agency, can provide you with a nanny in the morning to help get the kids ready for skiing,

Lucy

collect them from ski school, feed them a delicious lunch and then entertain them for the afternoon to free you up to enjoy a full days skiing and après ski! A skiing holiday with a baby might not seem feasible but with the mix of a qualified nanny and a beautiful chalet with a sunny, south facing terrace with deer skin covered seating, enjoy a book in the sunshine whilst your baby has an afternoon nap. Depending on your budget, your

chalet may come with a spa and a swimming pool. If you choose catered accommodation, you can relax for a week with a chef to prepare meals for you and your children, a chalet host to help manage the chaos and a driver to drop you off and pick you up from the lift station. Petit Verbier can arrange a family friendly chalet, fully equipped with everything from stair gates to bottle sterilisers or loan you a snow-friendly, double buggy to save the expense and annoyance factor of transporting it. Petit Verbier was set up by single mum, Lucy Anderson. Lucy fully understands the challenges of getting children up and on the slopes whilst trying to ensure that all members of the family get the most out of a skiing holiday. With flexible childcare and the right instructors, parents have the opportunity to blast down the hardest slopes while younger members of the family are honing and developing their skiing talents on the easier slopes. Children can ski, play, go ice skating or swimming – why let the grown-ups have all the fun? Petit Verbier www.petitverbier.com

Surtees SPEAKS... Surtees’ Guide to a tip top relationship Warning: this article might get your back up and be seen as controversial. (So what else is new?....)

A few years ago, a book came out. It was the talk of the playground/ Starbucks/wine bar. No, not 50 shades of grey (that’s for another column), but “Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus”. We all bought it, read it and lots of us were shocked because it put down in black and white what everyone knows but in our PC society was afraid to say - that men and women are poles apart; they see things in different ways and they process information in very different ways. Now I’m not challenging equality or women’s rights and I’m not suggesting one gender is better than the other but society has changed dramatically in the past 30 years and in the 21st Century there are definitely mixed messages. I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I sometimes feel a bit sorry for the men…

I was on a girls’ weekend away recently and as I sat and listened to one woman lamenting her husband’s shortcomings, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the guy. He’d bought the wrong cereal, forgotten a pick-up, hadn’t cooked the pasta correctly. In all, a poor housekeeper – for that seemed to be his role. In the next breath, she moaned that he was too keen to please, too weak, too downtrodden. She’d been out the previous night with her Managing Director and he’d swept her off her feet, been bolshie and outrageous, taken charge, forced Champagne on her and flirted outrageously. When I put it to her that she essentially wanted her husband to be two different men, she agreed. An alpha bad boy when out to party and supportive and caring when at home with the family. “And you?” I asked, “Do you follow that line of thinking, a la Jerry Hall – that you ought to be a cook in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom?”

To say she was outraged at my comment is putting it mildly. Fact is, I’m not suggesting we go back to the dark ages when a woman’s place was in the home and men were always right. But I do think to have a successful relationship we have to recognise the differences – and play to them.

Use my handy Surtees Speaks Top Tips to keep you on the straight and narrow:

Ladies: • Don’t criticize his mother. • He wants to feel needed; you can be independent and still let him feel useful. • Tell him what you want. Don’t hint or be vague. Men like clarity. • Let him open doors for you. Being a chivalrous gentleman never goes out of style. • Don’t belittle him; having an alternative opinion is one thing – ridiculing his is another. • Withholding sex is a dangerous game – play it at your peril! • Loyalty. You should always defend your man. Gentlemen: • If you want compliments, you need to give her a reason (baggy jogging pants don’t cut it). • Her friends’ opinions of you matter. (See the Spice Girls Anthem: “If you wanna be my lover/you gotta get with my friends.) • Mysterious is good. Secretive is not. • Don’t tell us to calm down. It has the opposite effect. • We want to look lovely so don’t tell us it all looks the same – we still need romance. • And don’t keep asking “how long?” when we’re getting ready. Embrace the end result. • Loyalty. You should always defend your gal.

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

Unbelievable!! Columnist Sandra Paul tackles the inconsistency of planning consents in the Cotswolds hristmas was the time to offer goodwill to all men (and women) and so my heart sank a little as I read the press coverage and emails to my inbox about Cotswold District Council (CDC) and specifically, their inconsistency when applying the planning rules to different ethnic groups. We live in a beautiful part of the country and we are lucky enough to have agencies in place to protect Areas of Outstanding Beauty for future generations. The majority of us get it. But a consistent grumble seems to be there is one set of rules for the quiet majority, many of whom would love to build a home on the Cotswold Way; and another set of rules for a favoured minority. Fed up with CDC for a lack of any sensible application of the planning rules or indeed sensible dialogue, locals from an area of outstanding beauty just outside Cheltenham, have gathered together to form an action group: Leckhampton Hill ‘R.A.I.D.’ - Residents against Inappropriate Development at Hartley Lane. At first it appears that this is NIMBYism of the usual kind. But RAID put the case very clearly. The CDC has a legal duty to identify and provide sites for Gypsy & Travellers for the next couple of decades. However, what we are witnessing in our region is previous planning application rulings being overturned simply so they can tick the box for fulfilling the quota of sites. The recent approval by Cheltenham Borough Council and CDC to approve a temporary site on Leckhampton Hill ignores planning policies that are in place to protect the beautiful Cotswold landscape and contradicts the Councils previous decision on an adjacent site not to allow development - also upheld at appeal. It makes a mockery of democracy. The majority of residents plus The Cotswold Conservation Board

C

and Coberley Parish, have argued strongly against the development and have seen their views dismissed by the bureaucrats. I asked the Council about an adjacent piece of land – also in the designated area of outstanding beauty. A Gypsy & Traveller application, made retrospectively, was not allowed. The Appeal courts also rejected it. But, listen to this: “It is allowed on appeal for a temporary period of 3 years. It was retrospective, as the caravan was stationed upon the land prior to the planning application being submitted. With regard to that appeal, while the Inspector acknowledged the harm to landscape character in the AONB, he concluded that as the Council could not demonstrate a 5 year supply of gypsy/traveller sites, he would allow the appeal subject to the temporary period,” according to a Council spokesperson. Unbelievable! This gobbledygook takes some re-reading: The Council failed to identify sites in

appropriate areas. So the development in an area of outstanding beauty is allowed to go ahead. For three years. Eh? If I went and plonked my caravan there would I be allowed to stay and build stables and a washroom? Probably not. The district council is doing nothing to shatter the perception that if you are part of this minority you can develop first and ask for permission afterwards. It is not bigoted or racist to complain about this lack of fair play. And yet I know that individuals and parish councils in particular are reaching the limit of frustration with a district council whose decisions are so often at odds with the opinions of local people. This Month with Kate Justice

Anyone for Ski? Kate Justice reveals her day of terror, stuck in the Alps...

ho is going skiing this winter? For a lot of us, having a SUN holiday in the middle of the UK cold season is the ideal break to take in January but for others an action packed frosty but sunny outdoor vacation is the preference. I’m with the latter – to the extent that I moved to the French Alps and spent five winters there. Something that happens when you live in a ski resort, is that you get to know your way around the mountains very well… and inevitably you may grow tired of all the usual routes and ‘on the piste’ skiing… seeking instead the greater thrill of hiking beyond the chair lift and going off the beaten track. However, this is not for the faint hearted – or badly organised – as I discovered more than once. I have missed the last chair lift dozens of times and despite then being forced into enormous necessary detours, severe tellings-off from the ‘slope police’, causing visiting friends to actually break down in tears, 5 mile walks carrying skis and the occasional 2 hour bus ride, I still like to cut things fine at the end of the day. The worst experience in this vein happened on my first trip out on the piste after having my eldest child. William was only 3 months old and after

W

finally getting to grips with the breast pump, I dispatched baby, along with bottle of milk, to the resort nursery for a couple of hours. Or so I thought. Feeling the freedom of the powder beneath my feet and the warmth of the sun on Will my face (and the glow of vin chaud I had had with lunch – my first in about a year), it seemed like a great idea to ski to Switzerland and get some proper mileage in. Stupid, stupid, plan as missing the last lift in another country has much bigger implications than a long walk up a steep hill. From the top of the last run, I could see the horrific situation unfolding before me, almost in slow motion, as the lift operators began unravelling the ‘FERME’ sign at the bottom of the slope… Knowing what could happen if I didn’t make it, I actually risked my own life by trying out my James Bond style skills and leaping off the edge of a small cliff to make up time. It backfired - and by the time I had gathered up strewn skis, poles, gloves and hat, the lift was shut and the staff had gone home. Once I’d reached the foot of the mountain, getting to a nice cosy bar on the Swiss side was relatively easy. But

being reunited with my baby was not. I had to call my husband’s business partner to collect the child from the alarmed staff at the nursery, break into my apartment for William’s passport and he then had to drive for 2.5 hours to pick me up across the border. By the time they arrived, I hadn’t fed my son for about 6 hours. He was fine, having slept the whole journey. But I was definitely not! All I will say is that I made Lara Croft look like Kate Moss and never missed another lift again. I’m back in the UK full time now as life at 1800 metres with two babies proved too much of a faff… but the annual pilgrimage to the mountains still pulls me in. William is now 11, he can get to Switzerland and back on his own in about 3 hours and puts my skiing to shame. So far though, he’s always arrived home in plenty of time, proving you’re never too young for a valuable lesson!
