Summer Holiday club for 5-11’s : 8th - 12th August We’ve been running a week-long summer holiday club at St Catherine’s for over 20 years now and around 80 children aged 5-11 come to have a great time and learn more about Jesus. This year’s club is set at the seaside where we hope to enjoy all the excitement of the beach with five fun-filled days of games, craft, music, drama, fun and laughter. We’ll also hear through Gospel stories, how Peter (the Seaside Rock) took up the challenge to follow Jesus. Each day the 2 hour session ends with a music or drama performance by some of the children for family and friends. The club runs from Monday 8th to Friday 12th August, 10.00 am to 12.00 noon and the cost for the week is £10 and £5 for additional children in the same family. In addition there’s a special introductory session for all the family at 10.30 am on Sunday 7th August which replaces the normal Sunday service at St Catherine’s. To find out more, or to ask for an invitation and registration pack, call Tony Bartlett (phone number above) or email info@stcatherines-tilehurst.org.uk You can see highlights of last year’s holiday club on YouTube, just search for Polar Explorers St Catherine’s The Cornwell Community Church is a part of St Catherine's Church (C of E) This Newsletter is edited and produced by Tony Bartlett 07721 377 905 & Stuart Poore ℡ 0118 962 4555 E-Mail : Tony.Bartlett.CCC@NTLWorld.Com or Stuart.Poore@NTLWorld.Com Web Site : http://www.CornwellCommunityChurch.Org.UK

Cornwell Community Church Cornwell Community Church is part of the Church of England on the western edge of Tilehurst in Reading. We're a small, friendly church and we aim to reach out to our local community and show God's love in action. We meet in the Cornwell Centre, Home Croft, Clements Mead RG31 5WJ which has good parking, level access and good facilities as well as a nearby play area. The Cornwell Centre is owned and maintained by Tilehurst Parish council (see page 4)

Sunday Services Our service normally takes place every Sunday morning at 11.00 am and lasts about an hour. The service is simple, informal and family friendly. Our worship is contemporary and we try to explore the Bible in innovative ways to make it relevant to our lives today. You’ll find all ages represented and welcomed, from babies (there are soft toys for them) to grandparents. From 10.30 am we offer fresh coffee, tea or squash and cake. It’s a chance to chat and get to know each other. This is repeated after the service. In addition to Sunday mornings, we also meet midweek in each other's home for fellowship and bible study.

Children & Youth We encourage children and young adults to take an active part in our Sunday services, and several are members of our Worship group. Whilst everyone always starts the service together, more often than not, the children go off to their own age related activities (Sunday school). 2

We also run additional activities for children and young adults :Holiday Club Our week long summer holiday club is for children aged 5 - 11 and is always very popular. The next starts August 8th 2016. Youth For 11+’s there are (social) meetings on alternate Friday evenings at St Catherine’s. Want to know more? For more information about our children’s work and a programme please contact Tony Bartlett 07721 377 905 And see our Facebook page And Blog

Why not join us ? Do come along on a Sunday; we’d love to see you and you’ll be made very welcome. We think that you’d enjoy being with us and being a part of the church because: -

• You will make new friendships. • You will be able to satisfy the need for a spiritual dimension to your life.

• By letting Jesus into your life you will have the key to answer life’s questions.

St Catherine's Church, Centre and Café Wittenham Avenue RG31 5LN St Catherine’s is the Church of England parish church for this area of Tilehurst. This distinctive building, dedicated to St Catherine of Siena, can be found in Wittenham Avenue opposite Birch Copse school. For all enquires, including about weddings and baptisms, contact the vicar, Rev Denis Smith :- ℡ 0118 942 7786 email revdenissmith@hotmail.com

St Catherine’s Development Project St Catherine's has been planning improvements to its building for some years now. Building work got underway back in November, and the new facilities were officially opened on St Catherine’s Day - 29th April - by Andrew, Bishop of Reading. The aim of the building work is to give greater flexibility (through a new entrance, additional toilets, a second kitchen and a new café area), greater comfort (through a new heating system for church and hall) and a larger environment (through a new quiet meeting room and separate prayer ministry/counselling room). It all provides a centre where local visitors and residents can meet for activities, food and community events. Everyone at the opening agreed that the architect and builders have done a superb job in achieving this. The overall aim is provide a meeting place for all ages, enabling St Catherine’s to engage with the local community more effectively, especially the lonely and isolated

The new entrance and ‘Garden room’ quiet room and Fridays 8.45am - 2.00pm, with the lunch menu starting at 12noon.

Operation Christmas Child

Community Litter Picks

Through Operation Christmas Child, we send shoeboxes packed with toys and supplies to needy children around the world to bring some Christmas cheer to those who might otherwise get nothing.

We have been organising these litter picks in the Spring and Autumn for 8 years now with the help of the Neighbourhood wardens whose job it was make this area a better place to live in.

Last year, together with St Catherine’s, 7th Tilehurst Brownies and Springfield school we collected 230 filled Shoeboxes.

Sadly, funding by West Berkshire Council will cease in July so our local team of Neighbourhood Wardens is being disbanded

Thank you to everyone who contributed a shoebox last Christmas. We’ll be collecting again this year, look out for our leaflet in the autumn. For more about this charity see www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk

We hope to continue because whilst the objective is to tidy up local woods and footpaths, these litter picks also give us the opportunity of meeting other people who care about the local environment.

Sending off our shoeboxes at the 2015 Shoebox Sunday Service
