With more than a century of distinguished history under our feet, the Cornish BFA Dance program is proven to prepare you—body, mind, and soul— for the life of a professional dancer. For four years, you’ll work within a nurturing community of teachers who are as passionate about dance as you are. You’ll benefit from your professors’ expertise in technique and from their experience as working artists. Every dancer takes classes in contemporary techniques, ballet, and choreography, informed by our holistic focus on well-being. Courses in anatomy and kinesiology empower
you to work expertly with your own body. Electives like hip-hop, partnering, and contact improvisation develop breadth and versatility in your dancing. While studying history, technology, the business of dance, and more, you will also hone your own distinct, creative voice. When you complete the program, you’ll have a proven, professional dance education and a foundation of skills—discipline, creative thinking, collaboration—that will benefit you in the 21st-century economy,

PERFORM IN YOUR
FIRST YEAR The Cornish BFA Dance program is a rigorous and engaging program where opportunities abound. Combine technique classes, choreography coursework, and somatic practice—plus rehearsals and performances—and, on average, first-year students dance between 20 and 30 hours per week. You’ll be able to audition for performance opportunities from your first semester, such as our professionally-adjudicated, facultyproduced New Moves showcase of student choreography, and for senior capstone concerts in our premier performance space, the Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center. Also in your first year, you’ll get to know the ropes of dance performance by contributing to the technical production aspects of our Cornish Dance Theater (CDT) shows in fall and spring. Later in the program, you’ll also have the opportunity to perform in CDT through new and repertory work by faculty and guest artists.

Art has always played a vital role in society. Artists and performers challenge the way people interact with space, with technology, and with each other. Generating new ideas requires artists to not only be able to work in their field, but also to think critically— examining a situation, identifying a problem, and then designing a creative solution. Whether writing a play that highlights social injustice or designing a new skyscraper, artists enlighten us with their ability to examine problems in an entirely new way. When you decide to invest your time and money into a college education, you are faced with a choice: invest in reproducing the techniques of other artists, or invest in a degree that teaches critical problem-solving by generating new art and performance. Hundreds of programs teach basic techniques
or craft in performance or visual arts, but few degrees teach artists how to apply critical thinking skills toward the creation of new work. At Cornish, we believe this immersive training offers the preparation necessary to address any future challenge. Cornish College of the Arts offers a wide range of scholarships and financial aid to support the investment you make in your own future.
