Council launches landmark Neighbourhood Plan consultation

Have your say on the future of Torpoint

Torpoint Town Council has announced the start of the town’s Neighbourhood Plan project. The Council Chambers hosted meetings in March attended by around 200 members of the public who were keen to find out how neighbourhood planning would affect them, and to have their say on the future of Torpoint. A presentation led by Mayor Mike Pearn, and Councillors Eddie Andrews, Gary Davis and Andrea Johnson was held for members of the public to learn more about Neighbourhood Planning. An open forum of questions and answers followed, and ensured that the townsfolk were able to raise then and there, the issues that mattered to them. An invitation to be part of a Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group saw tremendous support and a number of volunteers to participate in this new venture. In addition to beginning dialogue with the local community, the Town Council are keen to ensure that the youth of Torpoint understand the role of neighbourhood planning, and how they too can get on board. Cllr John Tivnan visited pupils from Torpoint Community College along with fellow councillor and Torpoint Community College teacher Chris Goodman, to share the message and encourage youth participation.

Mayor Mike Pearn said: “Our meeting with the public starts the process of consultation with the residents of Torpoint, leading to a plan for the future development of the town that fits with the wants and needs of our local community. “This is an exciting time for the people of Torpoint, and I urge you to get behind the plan, and have your say.” Households in Torpoint can expect to receive a questionnaire after Easter, asking for more detailed thoughts and ideas to assist with pulling the plan together. A website for the plan has been launched at www.torpointplan.org.uk All minutes and documents from meetings will be available for public viewing on this website, and also through our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/torpointneighbourhoodplan For more information, or to get involved with the project please contact: admin@ torpointtowncouncil. org.uk Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn addressing one of the meetings on the Neighbourhood Plan project

Busy time for Torpoint Lions The Lions car boot sale organised at the Carbeile Inn in February did not get off the ground as due to a severe weather warning the day before we failed to attract any sellers. Five Lions turned up at 7.15am in lovely sunny conditions waiting for cars to turn up and by 9.30 decided to call it a day which is also the time it started to rain. We do intend to hold another one at the same venue and hopefully the weather will be kinder. When known the new date will be advertised. In the run up to Mother’s Day Torpoint and Rame Peninsular Lions and helpers donned their wellies to pick daffodils with a view to selling them afterwards at several outlets, thus raising money to help individuals, local charities and organisations that request help from the Lions. Picking and selling took place over two weekends with the second one falling on Mothering Sunday. The field of daffodils was kindly allocated by farmer Jeremy Oatey with Kernow Mill and several other outlets in the area allowing the daffodils to be sold outside their establishments. On Saturday March 7 the Lions and helpers were joined by 13 children from Carbeile Junior School (members of CATS Community Action Through Sport) accompanied by two members of staff from the school Tracey Cullerton and Debbie Crossman who also had her three year old grandson George with her to help. The children worked extremely hard and seemed to enjoy every minute picking several large containers of flowers and then after a well earned break with drinks and biscuits supplied they assisted with bunching them up ready for selling. The Lions and helpers were delighted with their help and support and it was explained that the money raised would help all around the area even their school. The following weekend it was the turn of older children from Torpoint Community College. Both school CATS groups assisted in 2014 with the picking, selling and also helping on two occasions with the Lions Santa sleigh run. It is uplifting to see youngsters giving up their free time to help the community that they live in. Well done all of the children and a big thank you from Torpoint and Rame Peninsular Lions club. This year’s Spring fair formerly known as Cambridge fair will be held at Torpoint Council Chambers on May 16 due the weather being unkind for the last few years this will be a trial for the future. There will be stalls and some entertainment: charity stalls are welcome at no charge and a local nursery will be invited to sell plants. It will run from 1pm until 4 pm, with refreshments available. Anyone wishing to book a stall place please contact Lion Steve Morris on 07802786510. We hope this event will be a success and if so will become an annual event and we look forward to seeing you there. Torpoint Lions President Steve Murray reports: “I attended the table top event at the Council chambers organised by the Mayor Mike Pearn and his staff, with the view of promoting Lions, handing out leaflets and explaining the great work achieved all over the world by Local clubs and Lions International helping the world in times of disasters. “We have made hundreds of people happy with the daffodils that have been

June, followed shortly after in July by the Summer fair, which promises to be bigger and better than before. The Lions always try to do its best for the community, but membership of our club has taken a dip in recent months due to various reasons and we feel that we need new younger members to step up and take on the work of almost 40 years of service to our community, so if you feel that you have what is required to be a Lion please contact Steve Murray on 01752 816647, to discuss an introduction. Debbie Crossman with three year old grandson George helping purchased, and I must thank the staff at Kernow Mill for being the most wonderful hosts in allowing us to sell outside their doors and other outlets that so kindly allow selling. A Sea Cadet Officer, who believes he was born to be in the Royal Navy, is preparing to hang up his uniform after a career spanning six decades. Lieutenant Commander (Sea Cadets) Micky Shone, who lives in Torpoint, originally joined the Royal Navy in 1964. He left the Service 34 years later and immediately started a new career with the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) firstly as the Executive Officer of the National Sea Cadet Training Centre and more recently as the Officer-in-Charge. The centre is based at HMS Raleigh. In the 16 years Micky has worked at the centre, he believes that over 100,000 Sea Cadets have come to HMS Raleigh for one of the 19 bespoke courses on offer. Micky said: “There are 14,500 youngsters who are members of the Sea Cadet Corps, 8,000 adult instructors and 425 units nationwide. Working here has allowed me to continue using the skills that I learnt in the Royal Navy to look after young people. Some of the cadets who have come through during my time are now coming back as SCC Officers, which is really encouraging. It’s been wonderful to be part of the Sea Cadet family.” Micky hails from Buckley, Flintshire, in North Wales, but settled in Torpoint in 1979 with his wife Pauline and two sons, Wayne and Gareth. He arrived at the Royal Navy careers office at the tender age of 15, but was sent away because at four feet seven, he was deemed too small to join the Service. Micky said: “The careers staff said I needed to be five feet tall, so I went back to school and conducted a series of stretching exercises. After three months I went back again and they measured me at four feet 10, so they let me in because they could see I was still growing.” Having been accepted as a junior seaman, Micky reported to HMS St Vincent in Portsmouth to start his Naval career. Five years later, at the age of 20, he transferred to the PT branch. Micky served on board three warships and ashore in the UK. He also served overseas, firstly as a Chief Petty Officer in Portugal and then in the rank of Warrant Officer in Hong Kong. Micky’s first appointed after qualifying as a PT instructor was at HMS Fisgard, the former Royal Navy artificer training establishment in Torpoint. His final Royal Navy appointment was also at HMS Raleigh. Throughout his time in the Service Micky’s main sport was boxing and he excelled as a coach. He coached the Royal Navy team to two successes against the Army and became involved in the England Boxing Squad. Micky was appointed the National Coach to Portugal and chosen as the Assistant National Coach to Olympic gold medallist, Dick McTaggart MBE. Micky and Dick were tasked with preparing the

Navy stalwart from Torpoint retires after 51 years in uniform Scottish Squad for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986. He was later offered the job as the Scottish National Coach, but had to turn it down because of his Service commitments. In recognition of his contribution to Service sport, Micky was awarded the BEM in 1978. Looking back on his career Micky said: “Being in the Royal Navy is in my opinion one of the finest careers ever. When I joined the Service I had no idea of what the Navy could offer me. Over the years I have been spoilt by good friends who have been there to support me and I hope that I’ve been there for them in return.” Now aged 66 Micky is ready to retire and intends to give himself some time out. He and Pauline have been married for 41 years. Wayne is aged 38 and Gareth, a year younger. Two years ago Micky and Pauline welcomed their first grandchild, Archie, who Micky describes as a ‘fabulous addition’ to the family. Micky said: “I’m leaving Raleigh with great trepidation. I’ve worked 40 hours per week for most of my career, but I’m involved in local golf and I’m going to give it a year to see what’s out there for me. I will certainly miss what I’ve been surrounded by for 51 years; the comradeship, the laughs, the banter and the daily routine. I tend to know most people in Raleigh and I’ve always admired what the establishment produces both for the Royal Navy and the Sea Cadet Corps. “It’s a very warm place, there’s always a ‘yes’, with people very willing to help. I’ve now had 51 years of employment in uniform and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every day. I’m sure I was born to wear a Naval uniform.”

As the long dark days of winter draw to a close Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club is looking forward to a bumper summer season both on and off the water. The sailing season began with a splash on March 29 with the Three Rivers race – a thirteen-mile pursuit race starting at noon. Then in early April the dinghy summer racing series starts on April 6 and takes place every Monday and Thursday evening until the end of August. Yacht racing begins on April 14 and the regular Tuesday night races in the Hamaoze and the Harbour are interspersed with longer races to the James Egan Layne wreck and to Fowey. Will Dave the dolphin join in with the sailing again after two visits during the Spring series? The windsurfing section meets on Tuesday evenings at 5.30 pm. There are a series of Saturday beginner windsurf sessions too whilst anyone who is interested in scuba-diving should consider a try-dive. To learn more about the scuba diving section local people can go along to the divers’ club night at the clubhouse from 8pm on Wednesdays to meet the crew. The cadet section goes from strength to strength with the purchase of two new Feva dinghies, more in-house instructors and the continued support and donations from the Torpoint community including the 17.30 Club and Lloyds Bank. Off the water the club’s new social secretary Laurie Ingram has been working hard to arrange a full programme of events – everyone should find something to whet their appetite. Laurie said: “Our social programme has something for everyone. Torpoint Mosquito has always been a family club so our events reflect that too. We have something for all ages and interests starting with an Easter family day on April 5 with Easter bonnet

PENSIONERS’ VOICE update It was the third day of the dreaded West Country weather, foggy, cold, damp, grey and miserable when Maker with Rame Pensioner’s Group met on March 12. But in the Community Hall, Kingsand on Thursday, it was warm, bright and colourful, for guest speaker Mrs Jane Mutch who had brought for display, some of the posters from the theatrical productions she had organised for the village over the past few years. Jane explained that it was possible to put on the productions since the Arts Council grant, in Cornwall named Carntocove, which supplies the funding to enable even small villages to engage professional acts to perform for them, some 60-70 villages now participate in the scheme. Twice a year the local committees are offered some 40 acts to chose from, and as Jane says, they try to make these as varied as possible, but it isn’t possible to please all the people all the time. For these productions the village halls are charged £200 or 80 per cent of the takings. Since the normal charge would be at least £600, the small halls really benefit, and the larger halls are happily in profit for, as Jane said, on a good night the Kingsand hall could take £1,000. So from the 35 productions so far presented, together with other fund raising efforts, Jane has so far raised

£14,000, money which is being used toward a new stage (one which can be adjusted to different heights). For pensioners the price of a ticket in 2009 was £5, and now in 2015 is still only £6. Jane pointed out that this theatrical enterprise was a team effort, and she was fortunate to have 17 helpers from ticket sellers to tea makers to raffle organizers. They, however, have nothing to do with the setting-up of the theatrical production. All scenery and ancillary gear is brought to the hall by van, unloaded, set up and maintained, even the scene changes and the lighting, by the professional crew, who, at the end of the evening, dismantle and pack it ready to move on to the next location. The actors are, of course, extremely competent. Besides ‘straight’ acting, we have welcomed young students who write their own material, can sing and play musical instruments, and have recognised some faces from television. As Jane finished her talk, and was sincerely thanked for the effort she had expended on organising the ‘Theatre Productions’ Mr Michael mentioned to her appreciative audience that Jane and David often played host for the night for many of the performers, some of whom travel long distances to be with us in Cornwall, so we are doubly grateful to her as, no doubt, are they !

Celebrating Easter and Mother’s Day

At the Torpoint Nursing Centre, we all celebrated Mother’s Day with a cream tea for all the mums and their families. We decorated the tea room and set the tables, everybody enjoyed the scones and tea, conversation and laughter flowed and a great afternoon was had by all. Residents at Porte Rouge have enjoyed another busy month with ongoing daily activities. The residents also enjoyed entertainment from singing duo Poslips where they were able to sing along and dance to the music. Mother’s Day was celebrated with a strawberries and cream and a Pimms afternoon which was a great success. The residents are now preparing for our Easter raffle and coffee morning event which will be held on Thursday April 2 at 11am. There will be lots of Easter Eggs to indulge in. The Old Vicarage, Antony began their spring entertainment season with fresh daffodils decorating the dining room and continued on Wednesday March 11 with the professional singer Sadie providing an up-lifting show full of glamorous costume changes and a musical journey that began A Long Way to Tipperary, featuring all the favourite singing stars and spring time songs, chasing away those April Showers, collecting Tulips from Amsterdam and we joined in her Easter Parade. The ladies of The Old Vicarage celebrated Mothering Sunday with a buffet tea, cake and a small gift to remember their day. Easter time festivities at The Old Vicarage include an Easter Egg prize bingo afternoon, breaking for tea and cake, plus an Easter movie afternoon with an ice cream interval. Janine our young singing star will entertain with her lovely singing voice and chat with the residents. Poslips are also booked, the music duo singing contemporary songs and playing the piano, fiddle and guitar. Happy Easter to you all from the residents and staff at The Old Vicarage, Antony, Porte Rouge and The Torpoint Nursing Centre.

Whitsand Golf Club captain hands over cheque for £3500 and announces good news for golfers A cheque for more than £3500 has been presented to Prostate Cancer UK on behalf of Whitsand Bay Golf Club by Chris Stevenson. Prostate Cancer UK was the charity chosen by Chris to support during his year as club captain in 2014 and the money was collected at a number of fund-raising events and activities. The cheque was received on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK by local representative Ken Dawe at a special ceremony at the Whitsand Bay Hotel. Also present were the Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint Mike and Val Pearn who have supported the club’s fund-raising activities for many years. Chris said: “The work that Mike and Val put into our charity day each year is amazing, and they have been doing this for a number of years. I first entered one of the charity days in 2002 and they had been doing it for some years even then! “This year’s charity day raised £1800 more than half of the total collected all year.”

Chris said that after more than 10 years of using the hotel facilities, Whitsand Bay Golf Club is once again to have its own clubhouse. “Plans are well under way and our new clubhouse will be opened later this year – hopefully by the summer. I am sure many locals and golfers across Cornwall will be interested to find this out,” he added.

Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Band march to the same beat Sea Cadet musicians from across the UK have taken to the stage for the first-time with members of the Royal Marines Band Service (RMBS). A group of 45 Cadets were selected to attend a new pilot course held at HMS Raleigh under the guidance of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth. The Sea Cadets were given the chance to rehearse with the Plymouth Band as a marching contingent and as a concert band. The week included a joint beat retreat with the Deputy Commandant General Royal Marines, Brigadier Richard Spencer, acting as the reviewing officer, and culminated in a concert performance when the bands took to the stage together. Speaking prior to the concert, Leading Cadet Jonathan Griffin, said: “I’ve performed at concerts before, but never with a big concert band like this so to perform alongside such fantastic musicians is different to anything I’ve experienced before. We will be playing some slower pieces and then some up-beat ones, which are my favourite, and a lovely oboe solo played by our Director of Music.” The 16-year-old has been a member of the Poole Sea Cadets for six years and has ambitions to join the RMBS in future. He said: “This week has been a lot different to previous band courses I’ve attended. Undoubtedly it’s been the best. It’s been a great experience to see the different styles and range of ensembles that the band can do. “There has been more emphasis on the concert side, which we couldn’t really do before. We’ve had the military marching side which has been fantastic, but we’ve also had the sitting down concert playing style as well, which again is very different to what we’ve done before.” Trumpet player Able Cadet Bonita Deathridge, aged 15 from Sutton Coldfield, said: “The course has made me more confident and I think I’ve improved musically. The concert was really exciting, but I was also a little bit nervous. Overall it’s been a great experience.” The course was organised by the Sea Cadet Corps in conjunction with

the RMBS. It allowed the Sea Cadet Corps Director of Music, Lieutenant Commander Ali Bowen-Davies, and her team to spot talent for the National Sea Cadet Band. She said: “Working with the Royal Marines has been fantastic. The course has been very structured and the change in our Cadets in just 48 hours of our arrival was remarkable. Most of our Cadets don’t read music, they learn by repetition. “This course has provided the Cadets with the opportunity to look at their future career options whether it be as a future member of the Band Service, Royal Navy or Commandos and additionally allowed the Royal Marine Band Service to see the talent that’s coming through the Sea Cadet Corps. Five out of six of the front rank of the Plymouth Band are former Sea Cadets and that makes me very proud. “They are remarkable people who have achieved so much and to see them donate time back to an organisation that helped them get to where they are is amazing. I wonder how many seeds of aspiration have been sown this week by those who helped make it happen.” The National Sea Cadet Band draws its members from across the UK. Among the Band’s annual engagements is the National Trafalgar Day Parade in London. Major Jason Burcham, the Plymouth Band Director of Music, said: “This has been a superb opportunity for our two organisations to interact. The young musicians of the Sea Cadets have clearly enjoyed their week with us, rehearsing and performing with the marching band, concert band and Corps of Drums. “They have all applied themselves throughout and are rightly proud of their achievements in giving such impressive performances in a short space of time. “They all have the potential to join the Royal Marines Band Service and I hope that some may now be encouraged to consider a career with us and in the future we may see them wearing our uniform.”

Make your views known on future of Torpoint As the front page story outlines, the first public meetings for the Torpoint Neighbourhood Plan took place in March. Around 180 Torpoint residents heard a presentation by Cllrs Eddie Andrews, Gary Davis and Andrea Johnson who explained what a Neighbourhood Plan is and why it is important for Torpoint. Milly Southworth and Chris Goodman collated all the questions and feedback from the residents who attended. After Easter Torpoint residents can expect to receive their first questionnaire, which has been put together from the honest and open feedback collected at this event. Please do complete this survey in order to have your say on the future development of our town. I’d like to thank everyone who supported these events, and I look forward to seeing you at future Neighbourhood Planning events. Household Rubbish There have been a lot of reports that household rubbish is being put out a day or two before their collection which has resulted in the bags being opened up by people to see if there are any bank or personal details in them. The bags have been found on the beaches of Thanckes Park, Macey Street and also in Cambridge Field (St James Park) where needles were found amongst the rubbish. The police were informed. So please for your own safety and security make sure your rubbish is not put out until the morning of your collection. Benodet Park/ Skateboard Park Recently There has been a lot of vandalism in the park and toilet areas recently. The CCTV cameras have recorded the incidents. The tapes have now been passed on to the police to investigate. Mayor’s Diary February 23 – St James Church Hall to welcome the WI baton which is going around the country to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the WI. The Centenary celebrations began on January 1 last year for WI members everywhere as the specially designed centenary baton officially began its journey around the UK. The baton, launched in Anglesey where the first WI meeting was held in the UK in 1915, will now travel throughout the 69 federations in England, Wales and the Islands to celebrate the links of friendship and community developed through the WI, and will finish its trip at the WI Annual Meeting in June 2015 at the Royal Albert Hall. February 25 – Golf Presentation at Whitsand Bay Hotel, the outgoing Captain of Whitsand Bay Golf Club Chris Stevenson presented a Cheque for £3,534.00 to Ken Dawe a representative of Prostate Cancer UK. February 27 – STC (1730 Club) Presentation to the Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club (Cadet Section). The money will be used to purchase much needed equipment. February 28 – St Columb Major for their traditional Hurlin the Silver Ball (Cornish: Hyrlîan) featuring an outdoor team game of Celtic origin played only in Cornwall and played with a small silver ball. Cornish Hurlin is a ball throwing and carrying game akin to rugby. The traditional St Columb hurling takes place on Shrove Tuesday and the second Saturday following. The usually rough game is played on the streets and in the surrounding countryside, between the Townsmen and Countrymen of the parish, with the shops in the town barricading their windows and doors to protect from accidental damage, which sometimes occurs. The ‘winner of the ball’ – the hurler who goals the ball or carries it over the boundary – is carried on the shoulders of two team-mates back to Market Square, to strains of the hurling song. Here he calls up the ball, declaring ‘Town Ball’ or ‘Country Ball,’ depending on the side to which he belongs. I must add we were invited by the Mayor of St Columb Major to go and watch – not take part!) March 9 – A ceremony to celebrate Commonwealth Day was held at Sparrow Park. The Commonwealth Flag was raised at 10am, where the children of the Torpoint Nursery & Infants School and Carbeile Junior School joined hundreds of organisations across the UK and overseas who raised the

Cllr. Mike Pearn MBE flag to celebrate the Commonwealth and its values of friendship and cooperation. March 11 – The Royal British Legion (Torpoint Branch) presentations of certificates to all who have helped at the Poppy Appeal 2014/15. Running Total at the presentation evening was £19,173.82, since then we have had a cheque presentation at The Community College which has now brought the total so far for the year to £19,641.82. We have until the end of September before the current Poppy Appeal year finishes so for the third year running it looks if it will break through the £20k barrier. Considering the population of Torpoint and Rame Peninsula is no more than 11,000 it really is a fantastic, ongoing achievement. Well done to John Tivnan and all his team of collectors. March 13 – STC (1730 Club) Presentation to the youngsters of Torpoint Tigers Rugby, part of St Columba and Torpoint Rugby Club. The Tigers cater for all youngsters between the ages of four and a half years of age to eighteen years of age. They had four players signed up in April of this year, when they first started – now they have ninety seven youngsters on their books. (Training is at the Defiance Field on Sunday mornings) March 14 - Neighbourhood Plan Public Meeting. (Report above) March 14 - Torpoint Silver Band Concert with the Ferryboat Entertainers, The Torpetts and Sandra Dryden at the Council Chambers in aid of Children’s Hospice South West. A great evening of music and entertainment. Well done to John Dryden the bandmaster for a splendid evening. New members are welcome, practice nights are on Mondays at the Band Hut opposite Sainsburys and next to the Esso Garage. March 19 - Official Opening of Penntorr Health Centre by Sheryll Murray MP. Congratulations to The Mayor’s Chaplain Lynn Parker on her ‘promotion’ to become a Rector. The Mayor’s Charity Dinner & Dance will be held at the Council Chambers on Friday May 1 at 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets £25. Further details Telephone 813164. Wig-up for charity - CLIC SARGENT are calling on local communities to wig-up in May for children and young people with cancer. May 20 is one wig day where schools, businesses and organisations can make a great big difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer. Thousands of people across the UK will be donning wigs to raise funds and show support for children and young people with cancer, many of whom lose their hair during treatment. CLIC Sargent is the leading cancer charity for children and young people. They provide clinical, practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people with cancer, and their family. Last year CLIC Sargent supported 74 families across Cornwall. One of CLIC Sargent’s support services that is vital to a family from Cornwall is free self-catering accommodation in Bristol, where many children must go to receive treatment. CLIC House and Sam’s House in Bristol provide an opportunity for families to stay together close to their child receiving treatment, and decrease the financial burden of travel and accommodation. Last year, there were 153 family stays in CLIC House and 68 families’ stays in Sam’s House. The average length of stay at CLIC House was 19 days, and 64 days for Sam’s House. If you, your workplace, community organisation or school, could raise £30 on Wig Wednesday, you could pay for a Cornish family to stay in one of CLIC Sargent’s homes from home in Bristol overnight. If you or your workplace, school, or community group would like to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer by wigging-up on 20 May 2015, you can sign-up at www.clicsargent.org.uk/wigwednesday or call our Devon and Cornwall office on 01392 314672.

Truly scrumptious evening with the Torpoint Lady Singers The Torpoint Lady Singers held ‘A Truly Scrumptious Evening’ at the Council Chambers on February 20. The Council Chambers had been transformed into a cafe-style venue, tables adorned with flowers, tea lights and 23 scrumptious puddings waiting to be sampled. Chris Trethewey, chairperson, the master of ceremonies for the evening was in a sparkling form creating ‘lets have a party’ atmosphere with her links and humorous asides between numbers. The choir sang ‘Cabaret’ for the first time in public, which was appropriate for the evening. Judy Jenkins and Sarah Thomas, dressed for the part, wowed the audience with ‘We’re a Couple of Swells.’ Another first for the evening, the choir sang the challenging ‘America’ from West Side Story, while Sylvia Fraser, musical director and Sue Westwell, accompanist played a duet ‘Maria’ from the same show, receiving enthusiastic applause in appreciation of their talent. John Stubberfield (guitar) led a sixties style sing-a-long with choir and audience, while accordianist David Mashford captivated the audience with two solos and then led everyone in an old-tyme singalong. Lin Curtis, deputy musical director, entertained with two humorous monologues. 23 delicious puddings were eaten, no one was counting helpings. A lovely end to the evening, the choir sang a Disney Medley and the finale was an excerpt from ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ The group appreciated having Mike and Val Pearn, Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint in the audience and by popular request this concert may become an annual event showcasing the talents of the Ladies and their ‘Groupies.’

It is a popular charity outlet selling all sorts of items clothes, toys, books, china and more, all at a very good price. As soon as the shop opened it became apparent that they would be very busy. The shop moved into the new location as the floor space is larger than the old shop allowing for more items to be displayed and more level storage space at the rear. By Martin Bunkum Pastor of Torpoint Christian Fellowship

Finding new life, new hope and new purpose How can someone who lived 2000 years ago have any effect on us in 2015? Many of our ancestors have had a great influence on our lives here are some examples: Over 2,000 years ago man first discovered that the earth wasn’t flat. This was proved by Christopher Columbus in the 15th century, when he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1928 Alexandra Fleming discovered penicillin this has transformed medicine forever. The Wright brother’s first flight in 1903 was the fore runner of modern air travel. Jesus life, death and resurrection have had a profound effect on every generation of human history. Our calendar reminds us of Christ: A.D. Anno Domini meaning ‘In the year of our Lord’ BC meaning Before Christ. People today say that Jesus didn’t exist and yet there is so much proof of his life and ministry. Could men and women of previous generations be so wrong? We do them an injustice if we think we know better than them. Our forefathers lived with a great deal more suffering, hardship and death than we do and yet they carried on with life they didn’t give up. Perhaps their faith and indeed the support of the local church were contributing to their ability to persevere. One third of the world’s population believe in Jesus Christ and in many places around the globe faith in Him is growing. Maybe it is time for us to reexamine the Christian faith. The

church has made many mistakes but take a look at Jesus - He was a perfect example. Maybe this Easter it is time to dust off the Bible and read his story: remember there are four short biographies in the Bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Why not read one today. It may change the direction of your life. Take a risk what have you got to lose. My prayer today is that just as spring brings new life and new hope and the relief that winter is over. May you know new life, new hope, new purpose and perfect love from God above. Jesus said: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ (NIV) Happy Easter!

Cross of St Piran awarded to Peter Lavers Peter Lavers, a faithful servant of the Parish of Maker with Rame, has been awarded a Cross of St Piran. The Cross of St Piran Awards have been running for five years. Each year people across the diocese are encouraged to nominate individuals who have gone above and beyond in their service to their churches, parishes, wider communities or in their work. Peter’s daily life in retirement revolves around helping his neighbours, especially those with some special need. Not only is he a most diligent churchwarden of some years and churchman of many years, but he uses his life skills and talents to create objects of value for use inside and outside the church – from church noticeboards, to chests for vestments and altar frontals. He tends the churchyards of the three churches of the parish and digs cremated remains plots. Nothing is too much trouble for him. He was nominated for the award by the Deanery East Wivelshire and by Maker with Rame Parish. Peter was one of 16 recipients from across the county who received awards from Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd Tim Thornton, during a service at Perranzabuloe Church in March.

Rowing group is growing from strength to strength From humble beginnings, in 2011, the rowing group of the Quay Sailing Club, St Germans has developed into one of the most active on-the-water sections of the club and now competes in every regatta run by the Cornwall Rowing Association. Rowers range in age from nine to mid 60s - and whilst the junior rowing crews have grown rapidly, there’s a shortage of rowers in the 18 to 40 age bracket. The club is keen to build on the success of its rowing branch by attracting people of all ages to a sport that not only demands discipline, fitness, focus and teamwork but is also great fun and very sociable - on and off the water. It was long-serving club member Colin Wood who founded the rowing section, rallying support and helping to raise money for its first rowing vessel - an 18 foot wooden ‘flash boat’ which is rowed by four single oarsmen or women plus a cox. “We’ve had to learn quickly to compete at the level of other clubs,” said Colin. “Flashboats are fast but finely balanced craft which require good posture, timing and power to remain steady in the water - let alone win races! Thanks to the rowers’ dedication and hard training - even in the winter months we’ve been able to put in some very respectable performances at CRA regattas.” In 2013 QSC won a £10,000 development grant from Sport England. “It’s made a huge difference to the Club,” said Colin. “We’ve been able to buy new oars, a second flashboat and a skiff. The skiff is a very versatile 15 foot craft which can be pulled by one, two or three rowers. There’s no cox in this boat, so you need a bit of a corkscrew neck to steer it in a straight line!” The Club’s junior section has also grown rapidly. Around a dozen youngsters were recruited in November 2013 and within just a few months they were able to compete in all the CRA’s regattas. Last year St Germans ended up in overall joint third place in the junior league table. “We had our own very successful first points regatta in August 2014,” added Colin. “Thanks to some generous trophy sponsorship by local organisations, we managed to run 18 races at Cawsand and boost our funds with a barbecue and refreshments. St Germans also carried off the Supervets trophy!” With three regatta seasons behind them, the QSC rowers are now proving their worth in a wide variety of races on Cornish rivers, estuaries and the open

Quay Sailing Club (No 43) at Calstock Reaggtta sea. But it’s not all about racing - social rowers are also very welcome and QSC holds regular training sessions on the River Lynher at St Germans. Anyone interested in trying flashboat or skiff rowing under the supervision of a qualified coach, is welcome to have three trial sessions free of charge, but would be asked join the Quay Sailing Club to continue rowing. Photos and more information can be found at the QSC website: www.quaysailingclub.co.uk or the Facebook site: www.facebook.com/flashboat or by contacting Colin Wood on 01503 250504. TORPOINT

The WI Centenary Baton arrived in Torpoint from Downderry WI in a vintage car driven by Sylvia’s husband, Mr White. The Baton had journeyed around South East Cornwall that day and Rosemary Slee, president of Torpoint WI, together with the Mayor of Torpoint, Mike Pearn, welcomed the arrival of the Baton which is celebrating the 100th Anniversary f the WI by travelling the length of the country, finishing at the National Centenary Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in June. On the ground floor of the building there would have probably been situated a kitchen; bake house, brew house, store room and meeting room while on the first floor there was an open feasting hall in which the parishioners would celebrate key events within the church calendar such as Whitsuntide and May Day. During these festivities ales brewed on-site would have been sold to the parishioners the profits from which funded good causes within the parish. In the 17th century the use of the Poundstock Gildhouse changed as the growth in Puritanism halted the sales of ‘church ales’ and the building was re-adopted as a poorhouse and school. In 1907 the building was restored, further refurbishment being undertaken some 100 years later in 2007 supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Today the building is used for educational purposes, exhibitions, weddings and celebrations. During their visit to the Poundstock Gildhouse the ladies of Wilcove WI swapped their modern attire for traditional 16th century costume and participated in a number of typical Tudor domestic activities including; spinning, the making of bread and non-alcoholic ginger beer. After a hearty lunch and they idled away the afternoon in Tudor song and dance before returning to the comforts of their modern day living. On March 24 Wilcove WI ladies celebrated their 65th birthday at an evening function at Wilcove Village Hall, an invitation for the event having been sent to past and present members. Speaker for April is retired nurse Barbara Smith (SSAFA Ambassador) who will talk about the HM Forces charity SSAFA www.ssafa.org.uk On April 24 Torpoint WI will host the WI group meeting at St James Church Hall in Torpoint. All local WI members are invited to this meeting which starts at 7.30 pm. The members of Wilcove WI would like to invite any ladies who are interested in joining the Women’s Institute to join us at our monthly meetings and chat about what the WI can offer you. We meet at 7.30 pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Cove Hall (Wilcove Village Hall).

Talk to your child about their online friends. Who are they? What are their intentions? 3. Set appropriate parental controls on computers, mobile phones and games consoles. 4. Make sure young people know who to tell if they are worried about something online. 5. Know where to get help if you are concerned about contact made to a child or young person. The www.thinkuknow.co.uk website provides extensive information, including advice, films and lesson plans for parents, young people and schools. The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre also provides information around this topic. www.CEOP.police.uk

Monthly figures

The Control Room recorded 130 calls from the public in Torpoint and across the Rame Peninsula during February. Police attended a number of domestic incidents where no specific offences had occurred but help was provided at the scene, and other incidents where vulnerable children and adults were identified as requiring help from other agencies.

Calls included 20 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of those continue to be neighbour disputes; some were complaints about Facebook disputes, others about noise and vehicles. These calls also included the 45 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula. Incidents which occurred after midnight on New Year’s Eve are in the figures this month and include the criminal damages in Kingsand & Cawsand, the possible ‘drink-spiking’ in Torpoint and the domestic situation in Millbrook mentioned last month. Crime types by parish area Torpoint – 28 - 4 assaults (all categories including sexual and domestic incidents), 2 burglaries (1 dwelling & 1 non-dwelling), 12 thefts, 4 criminal damages, 1 public order offence, 2 communications offences, 1 possession of bladed article, 1 driving offence and 1 animal-related offence). Deviock – 3 (1 assault, 1 burglary non dwelling, 1 animal-related offence) Sheviock – 2 (assaults) Antony & Wilcove – 1 (fraud) St John – 1 (assault) Millbrook – 8 (3 thefts, 2 criminal damage, 1 public order and 2 communications offences) Maker with Rame – 2 (thefts)

Safety message for teens

Devon and Cornwall Police and partners are joining forces with the Solomon Theatre company to deliver drama workshops around the subjects of rape and child sexual exploitation to teenagers across the region. By presenting the #noblurredlines campaign within our youth workshops we reinforce that sex without consent is illegal. We illustrate how alcohol (amongst other things) can also be used for grooming vulnerable young people. Help and advice about the issues mentioned above can be found on the Devon and Cornwall Police website: http://bit.ly/1yLnmvv
