lifeguards are very modest and feel they were just doing their job, but to receive such widespread recognition illustrates to them just how valued their lifesaving service is to the public, and we’re all extremely proud of them.’ Supporting the RNLI to ‘save lives at sea’ your local RNLI branch was also delighted with the success of their Christmas Fayre and Grand Raffle held at the end of November. The event raised almost £1300 for the charity, almost three times as much as in previous years. A big thank you goes to everyone locally who bought raffle tickets ahead of the event, and also to those who came along on the day to support. A special thanks also goes to some of our local businesses which helped us with raffle sales including: Millbrook Newspaper shop, Hearts Kitchen cafe, Reddings Hardware Store, The Garden, Alternative Styles and Sainsbury’s Torpoint.

News from the Neighbourhood Policing Team from Sergeant Angela Crow, Neighbourhood Team Leader. The number of police cadets continues to grow and I am delighted to welcome four new cadets so far this term. Those of you who attended the Torpoint Christmas lights switchon would have seen two of our older cadets out on patrol handing out crime prevention leaflets. Next year, the cadets are going to take part in an exciting project to build a ‘Cop Car ’. I will keep you updated on their progress. During November the Control Room recorded 146 calls from the public in Torpoint and across the Rame Peninsula. These calls included the 54 crimes recorded as being committed across Torpoint and Rame Peninsula. Crime types by parish area were:Torpoint: 32 - 9 assaults (all categories including sexual and domestic incidents), 6 burglaries (1 attempt, 1 shed, 2 linked at business storage, 2 dwellings), 5 thefts, 4 criminal damages, 5 public-order type offences including possession of bladed items, 2 communications offences and 1 drugs offence. Deviock: 8 – 2 burglaries (dwellings), 5 criminal damages and 1 vehicle interference Sheviock: 0 Antony & Wilcove: 5 - 2 burglaries (dwellings), 1 assault, 1 theft and 1 vehicle interference St John: 0 Millbrook: 6 - 2 thefts, 1 criminal damage, 1 arson and 2 assaults

Maker with Rame: 3 - 1 theft, 1 assault and 1 criminal damage Police attended a number of domestic related incidents where no specific offences had occurred, but help was provided at the scene and other incidents where vulnerable children and adults were identified as requiring help from other agencies. There were also 26 incidents of anti-social behaviour reported to us across Torpoint and Rame. The majority of those were ongoing neighbour disputes; some were complaints about nuisance customers in business premises, others about noise and vehicles. You can report anti-social behaviour directly to the Anti-Social Behaviour team at Cornwall Council by completing the online report available at www.safercornwall.co.uk If you have any information about crime or anti-social behaviour in your area, please call the police on 101, email 101@devonandcornwall.police.uk or in an emergency always call 999. Alternatively you can call the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. As always, the best way to contact the Torpoint team with a non-urgent enquiry is by email to torpoint@devonandcornwall.pnn. police.uk One of the Torpoint team will answer your query as soon as possible, but there may be a short delay as the email inbox is not monitored 24hrs a day. All that remains for me this month is to wish you all a safe and happy New Year.

Chiropodist 2015 promises to be a significant year for Torpont. In June the town will host the Cornwall Armed Forces Day this promises to be the biggest ever event hosted in Torpoint with visitors expected to arrive in their thousands to Thanckes Park. Over the course of the year the Town Council are looking to lead the development of a Town Vision that will inform the Town Neighbourhood Plan. The Town Council are also looking to improve their links with the community and communication in general. In October last year a working part was set up to review the council’s communications. We are keen to hear from you with ways to improve our communications please email us at admin@torpointtowncouncil.gov.uk Christmas lights: This year’s Christmas lights and switch on event was bigger and better than they have been for many years, with large crowds, stalls and children’s entertainment attracting a bumper crowd. Special thanks to the Torpoint Events Company for arranging the decorations and the festivities. The lights through the street are funded through the Town Council, with the trees and electrics sponsored by local businesses in Fore Street, the Chamber of Commerce and the Torpoint and District Lions. Significant sums of money are saved through a strong team of volunteers who were on hand to put the decorations up and set up the switch on evening. Torpoint Moorings Association are looking to improve access to the beach in front of Windsor Terrace. The wall at the bottom of Quarry Street is to be straightened with the steps that access the beach being replaced by a small slip for easier launching of dinghies. The cost is expected to be in the region of £2000 and it is hoped to be completed by Easter.

Penntorr Health Monday January 19 The Rame Group Practice is moving from its surgeries at 16 Antony Road and 22 St James Road in Torpoint to new purpose built premises in January 2015. We are moving to Penntorr Health on Trevol Road, opposite HMS Raleigh, during the the weekend of January 16 to 18 and look forward to welcoming you to Penntorr from January 19. The new surgery can be contacted using the current Antony Road telephone number of 813277. The practice is making appointments available on a ‘book on day’ basis from January 12 to 19, to allow flexibility to sort out everything for the move. Patients needing to be seen for both urgent and routine appointments will be seen during this time on a ‘book on day’ basis. Pre-booked appointments

will be available as normal after January 19. The practice team is very excited about this move and our ability to treat our patients in a much better environment in the future. Lloyds pharmacy will also be a tenant at Penntorr Health. Repeat prescription drop off and collection services will be operated from Torpoint town as follows: Boots drop off in pharmacy; Lloyds drop off box at CHATLINK Patients should ensure that they use the correct drop off box for their chosen pharmacy. Patients wishing to make use of these services can drop their completed repeat prescription slips into the pharmacy and they will drop them up to Penntorr Health, collect them later and make the prescriptions up ready for collection by patients. The practice continues to operate from Coombe End Surgery in Cawsand and patients who normally attend that surgery may continue to do so or attend Penntorr Health. Torpoint & District Twinning Association: It’s been a busy few months with the Torpoint & District Twinning Association. Here’s a round up of our activities and events. During November we held a cinema night at the Council Chambers, where members enjoyed watching the Russell Crowe film ‘A Good Year’ – a heart-warming film about a British investment banker inheriting his uncle’s chateau in Provence (there’s the French connection!) Cider and crepes were enjoyed by all, and it was such a popular event that we expect to run more cinema nights in 2015. On November 29 we held our annual Christmas Craft fair at the Band Hut, showcasing some fabulously talented local craft makers. The twig reindeers made by Amelia proved a big hit! Monies raised from our fundraising activities go towards subsiding our French Twinning visits, and preparations are already under way for our visit to Benodet next May. In the New Year we will host our AGM meeting on January 23, to which all members are invited. The French Twinning Association welcomes new members, and is particularly keen to encourage families to join, as there are a number of French families in Benodet, very keen to twin with a family from Torpoint and the surrounding area. It’s a great opportunity to develop the language, and experience a new culture. For more enquiries please contact the membership secretary: Chrismartin123@btinternet.com

Multi-Use Games Area update

Over the summer the Torpoint and Rame Active Community Sports Network have been working hard behind the scenes to secure the £1m funding to build a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), which gained planning permission in August 2013, alongside the YMCA Sports Hall in Torpoint. Sports clubs and potential users in Torpoint and the wider community have provided letters of support and estimated their expected future use of the proposed facility. This community engagement and feedback is being used to develop a sustainable business plan. Once the plan is complete the key information will be in place to enable the Network to submit comprehensive funding bids early in the New Year and secure what is hoped will be a welcome and long overdue sports facility for the Torpoint and Rame Community.

The Friends of Mount Edgcumbe are undertaking a project to find out about life and work on the estate in the years before, during and immediately after the First World War and have been awarded a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund to support this work. As many readers will know most of the estate records were destroyed by fire in 1941 when the House was hit by incendiary bombs so the team of volunteers undertaking this research are piecing together information from a range of sources. They aim to find out what it was like to live and work on the estate in the years leading up to the First World War, what happened to those who went to war and to those who remained on the estate. The research will be used to create a documentary

and digital archive which can be used by a wide range of people and form the basis for future exhibitions, talks and living history events at Mount Edgcumbe. The material will also be available via a website. Work on the project is progressing well but it is hoped that local people will be able to add to the information and material available. If you have any information about life on the Mount Edgcumbe estate or on the Rame Peninsula during this period, any documents, photographs or mementos that we could scan or photograph please contact Liz Paxton by email liz.paxton@plymouth. gov.uk or leave a message at Mount Edgcumbe House (01752 822236) and one of our volunteers will contact you.

Catholic Parish of Our Lady of the Angels, Saltash with Liskeard, Sclerder Abbey and Torpoint

Celebrating Ephiphany and what it means... If you see people going around drawing strange symbols on houses at the beginning of January, don’t be alarmed. It’s not an outbreak of vandalism or anything sinister but rather a traditional house blessing celebrating the feast of the Epiphany. The word Epiphany means appearance or manifestation and the church celebrates the revelation of Jesus Christ’s divinity to the world. The Magi or wise men were the first to worship Jesus and we ask for their prayers of blessing by writing the initials of their traditional names – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar - above the door of the house with chalk blessed by the priest at the Epiphany Mass. The initials C.M.B also stand for the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat – may Christ bless this house. At the time of Epiphany the church also remembers other manifestations of Jesus’ divine nature – the voice of God heard at his baptism and the first miracle he performed, turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. Today, though, Christ is not often made known through special divine revelations but rather through the actions of those who have given their lives to him, showing his love and bringing his light to the world. Not just the great saints like Mother Teresa, and the thousands of lesser known missionaries working in so many deprived and dangerous places; not just the thousands of ordinary people killed each year because of their Christian faith; but all those faithful followers of Jesus who witness to him through their obedience to his teaching in their love of God and their love of their neighbour. As the days lengthen as the new year begins, may God’s light illuminate all our homes and workplaces and bring us closer to him. Father of light, unchanging God, you reveal to people of faith the resplendent fact of the Word made flesh. Your light is strong, your love is near; draw us beyond the limits which this world imposes, to the life where Your Spirit makes all life complete. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The views expressed in this column are not necessarily the views of Churches Together in Torpoint

Special visitor at the Kernewek Link offices Father Christmas visited the Kernewek Link Office in Torpoint in December with gifts for pets, treats for children and mince pies and mulled wine for the parents. He brought a message that pets are not just for Christmas they are for life and that they are valued members of the family. Along with many dogs, teddies and children the Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint Mike and Val Pearn popped in with their Teddy, named appropriately ‘Ted’. There was a surprise visit from Sydney the Corgi, who amongst all the excitement came in and sat at the bottom of Santa’s feet, a few minutes later his mum came looking for him, it was a magical moment! A great time was had by all and a big thank you to Kernewek Estate Agents & Torpoint Pet Supplies for sponsoring the event.

Thanks from Cancer Research Cancer Research thank everyone for the support throughout 2014. The Christmas Coffee morning and stall and the switch on of the lights raised a total of £739. The committee consists of a few aged ladies who are ably helped by their families. They average £10,000 a year for this cause and are always looking for help.

FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR First and foremost on behalf of Val, myself, members and staff of the Torpoint Town Council I would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year for 2015. Foodbanks - Emergency food for local people in crisis. If you would like to support the local Liskeard & Looe Foodbank, by donating food items including rice/pasta, breakfast cereals, tinned baked beans, rice pudding, tea bags and instant coffee, donations can be made at the local churches, the Children’s Centre, Trevol Road, Slimming World at the Council Chambers on a Tuesday and also Barclays Bank in Fore Street. More details can be found at their website address www.liskeardlooe.foodbank.org.uk. The Foodbank are also looking for new members to join their volunteer drivers, if you can help telephone 07512 011452. Congratulations to: • Chloe Vincent and Chloe Phelps on performing in the Plymouth’s Theatre Royal pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk” • Veronica Bright winning second place in an international short story competition. • To all the Young footballers who raised a fantastic £1,000 in memory of a much-loved resident of Torpoint Glynis Kitching, The young people from Torpoint Athletic FC raised the cash for the ‘Glynis Kitching Memorial Fund’ and it was donated to Wolf Ward at Derriford Hospital. Fourteen teams took part in a tournament at The Mill, and the event was so popular that six teams had to be turned away. Tony Kitching presented the £1000 cheque to senior sister Margaret Mahoney. The funds will be used to refurbish Wolf Ward Day Room, which is used by families and staff. • The Pride of Plymouth 2014 Emergency Services Award went to the RNLI Lifeguards Andy Wrennal, Daniel Holley, Joe Saunders and Aidan Hetherington. Thanks to their quick thinking and skill a potentially tragic situation was averted when a group of six were rescued from rip currents off Tregonhawke Beach. Congratulations to you all. Defibrillators: The Police have recently undertaken to identify locations of defibrillators around the area. While they will hold these details on a database accessible by control room staff, I thought you might find it useful to know where they are – and if you know of any which are not on this list, please let me know and I can update our records. It may not be the first item you think about when compiling a first aid kit, but the truth is a defibrillator can mean the difference between life and death. When you learn that around 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest each year, the possibility of needing access to immediate defibrillation becomes more of a reality. The defibrillator is simple to use. It really has the ability to save lives. During a sudden cardiac arrest, the chances of a casualty dying are reduced if high quality CPR and immediate defibrillation is administered. Locations of Torpoint De-Fibs: Lodge House Surgery, St James Road Surgery, Antony Road Surgery, Torpoint Dental, Antony Road Dental Centre, Torpoint Ferries – one on each ferry, Torpoint Ferry Office, HMS Raleigh. The St James Road Surgery and Antony Road Surgery De-Fib’s will I believe be located at the New Health Centre from January 19. Locations of Rame Peninsula De-Fibs: Millbrook Surgery,Coombe End Surgery, Kingsand, Community Responders have one which they share whilst on call in both Millbrook and Kingsand, Rame Gig Club and The Devonport Inn, Kingsand. Winter Driving: Cornwall Council is responsible for over 4,500 miles of road from major principal roads to narrow country lanes. Winter service is an important part of the council’s maintenance work and approximately £1m is spent each year on roads affected by winter weather. This involves salting major roads when there is a risk of ice, clearing snow and reacting to floods and fallen trees. We will, within the available resources, provide as safe

C llr. Mike Pearn MBE

Support the local Foodbank and help needy folk a passage as possible for users of the highway. Winter driving advice: • Before setting out on your journey during wintry conditions: • Plan your journey • Ask yourself if your journey is absolutely essential • Check the local and national weather forecasts • Listen to local and national radio for travel information • Tell someone what time you expect to arrive • Take warm clothes, food, boots, torch and mobile phone - and in snowy conditions, a spade • Clear your windows and mirrors before you set off and carry a screen scraper and de-icer • Last, but by no means least, take care! Xmas Fayre raises £400

Design

Porte Rouge continues to have organised events and December was no exception. The Xmas Fayre was well attended by family and friends of our residents and the ‘Residents’ Fund’ received just under £400 as a result of the Xmas Fayre which was an excellent result. The Fayre featured many stalls and a large raffle. Manager Sally and Jane, her deputy, were also involved in arranging a ‘Pub Quiz’ evening for the residents and their families which was a great success. The residents also had another family affair on December 14 with a coffee, sherry and mince pie afternoon which was enjoyed by everyone. The residents were also invited to Torpoint Community College to attend the Xmas Lunch and entertainment afternoon December 16.

Greenpeace and Cornish fishermen lobby Fisheries Minister over fishing quota Greenpeace volunteers and Cornish fishermen met Fisheries Minister George Eustice, who is also MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hale, in December to express their concern over the unfair fishing quota system. They handed in a petition from over 2000 people from or near his constituency of Camborne, Redruth and Hale. The petition signatures were gathered over three weekends on Camborne High Street. The petition called on the Minister to overhaul the fishing quota system. The signatories demanded that George Eustice changes the way that quota is allocated so that more is given to local, sustainable fishermen, who protect the marine environment and make a real contribution to the Cornish economy. The minister was met by a constituent and Cornish fishermen who are struggling to make a living because they are not given enough fishing quota. After the meeting, they presented the signatures gathered from his constituents in two ‘captain’s log’ books surrounded by a colourful banner, fishy figures and sea shanties were sung by a local band. Nina Schrank, oceans campaigner at Greenpeace said: “There is new European fisheries legislation that is designed to reward sustainable fishermen; it’s a golden opportunity that the government must not miss. If implemented properly, it will boost fish stocks, bolster home-grown sustainable fishing and breathe new life into our coastal communities up and down the country.

Fisheries Minister George Eustice “It’s time to stop destructive, foreign owned vessels hoovering up fish stocks while lining their pockets with the sale of fish caught from our shores. “The reform of this legislation was not won easily, now it’s up to the government to turn it into a reality here in Cornwall and along the UK’s coasts.” Greenpeace’s new campaign, ‘Our Net Gain’ is urging the government to reclaim fishing quota for local, low impact fishermen in the UK. Greenpeace carried out an investigation revealing that 43% of England’s fishing quota is held by foreign controlled, fishing businesses. It also exposed the high concentration of quota in the hands of a few industrial fishing companies: • The five largest foreign controlled vessels hold 32 per cent of the English quota • One Dutch-controlled vessel holds 23 per cent of the English quota • The small scale fleet in England has just 6 per cent of the UK’s quota

6 Advertiser January 2015 TORPOINT

Torpoint WI celebrated their 40th Birthday in November in style with a delicious meal in the brilliantly decorated St James Church Hall. The theme for the evening was the 1970s with many ladies wearing red and styles from that era. The menu was based on food popular in the 70s - roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, a lovely choice of starters with profiteroles, Black Forest Gateau and fresh fruit salad for dessert. Rosemary Slee, President, welcomed members and two guests, Pam Parnell and Jen Gilbert who came along to represent Cornwall County Federation. Unfortunately Kathy Reed, the new Federation Chairman, was unable to attend but sent a card with her congratulations and best wishes. Following the meal Rosemary explained how the WI in Torpoint had started in 1974 by mums attending the local playgroup run by Rosemary, who wanted to get together for a cup of tea, chat and to learn new crafts etc. The group has a very successful history, winning the Royal Cornwall Cup twice, the Western Morning News Cup for swimming, enjoying lots of outings, mystery trips,

Birthday dinners out, even enjoying afternoon tea on the Torpoint Ferry on the occasion of the WI 75th Anniversary. They have played cricket, taken part in a raft race and a tug-of-war and were able to look back at some of those occasions through a selection of photographs, Minute books and a booklet entitled History of the Torpoint WI. Rosemary thanked Sharon and the girls for a lovely meal and Pam presented Rosemary with a card and gift. Mary then thanked Rosemary for all her hard work in forming and continuing the Torpoint WI Group and presented her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers on behalf of all the members. Members were invited to help decorate the WI Christmas Tree as part of the Christmas Tree Festival to be held at St. James Church. Discussions are continuing concerning the arrival of the Centenary Baton in Torpoint next February. The next meeting entitled ‘Deadlier than the Male’ will be held on Wednesday January 28 at 7.30 pm in St James Church Hall, St. James Road and visitors and new members are always very welcome.
