Transport boost for north of city Chancellor George Osborne has given fresh encouragement to campaigners who want to see Plymouth Airport re-opened. As part of his Budget speech the Chancellor announced that the Government will carry out its own study to assess the potential for the airport to be brought back into operation. Richard Crocker, director of pressure group Viable - who have campaigned for four years to see the airport back in use - welcomed the news.

the lease of the airport, which has been mothballed since 2011. Meanwhile a report from the National Connectivity Task Force suggested that Plymouth Airport could be re-opened if additional landing slots become available in the South East. The Task Force’s report is based around future runway capacity in the south east when it is determined this summer. The report said access to slots for the region must be a “key consideration”.

“Plymouth Airport is definitely on the table as a clear election issue.”

The report states: “If slots into the UK’s international hub could be found for Plymouth the mothballing of the airport could be re-considered.

The Chancellor’s move was, however, denounced as a pre-election stunt by Sutton Harbour Holdings, who hold

“Plymouth’s large cluster of maritime businesses, the university and the Tamar Science Park all have ambitions

that would benefit from easier international access.” The National Connectivity Task Force was established to develop proposals for how regional air links to London and the major airports serving London and the South East Region can be improved. Independent airport consultant Chris Cain, who has been assisting the Task Force, told the BBC the report could have significant benefits for all three local airports in Devon and Cornwall. “It will be important for local MPs to endorse the report so that its recommendations are supported by the Airports Commission and whoever makes up the new Government after the General Election; if that happens it is prospectively a game changer for connectivity from the region and its economy,” he said.

New healthcare studio school is planned by Stoke Damerel young people planning careers in the health service.”

A new studio school for Plymouth which will train the healthcare and medical professionals of the future has been given the green light by the Government.

Professor Patricia Livesy, Executive Dean of Plymouth University’s Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, said: “As a partner we will support the school in a number of ways including providing skills based sessions, masterclass speakers and specialised careers advice for students.

Plans for the 375-place studio school sponsored by Stoke Damerel Community College (SDCC) - were announced by the Department for Education in March.

“This is an exciting development in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals at a time of shortage in the region and nationally.”

The school, which is set to open in September 2017, will offer places to young people in Years 9 to 13 to develop highly-valued vocational skills for the wider healthcare sector. Admitting pupils aged between 13 and 19, the studio school will be separate and distinct from SDCC, whilst taking advantage of the economies of scale of being a part of a multi-academy trust. “We are delighted our medical and healthcare studio school has been given the go-ahead,” said Carol Hannaford, principal of SDCC. “Young people at our new school will graduate to desirable, long-term professional careers in the local, national or international healthcare sectors,” she said. Working with, and advised by, Plymouth University and the healthcare industry the studio school will offer a project-based

learning approach with high-quality work experience with clear paths to future employment. Key to the vision for the school - which will offer a range of academic, vocational and professional qualifications in line with the national curriculum - is its partnership with a number of local healthcare educators and practitioners who have been key in formulating the studio school’s unique and innovative curriculum. Partners include the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and

Dentistry (PUPSMD), the University’s Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, the Northern, Eastern, Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group, Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust, Public Health Plymouth, Age UK Plymouth and Waypoints Dementia Care Home.

It is anticipated that a proportion of the initial student intake to the school - which will employ a staff of about 40 when full - will come from SDCC, one of the city’s most popular and over-subscribed schools which is gaining a national reputation for its Dementia Project work.

“The need for this provision from an employment, health and economic point of view is something which is long overdue in the city,” said Greg Dix, director of Nursing, Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust. “We are looking forward to being part of shaping the learning of

“This is a very exciting project and a forward-thinking and innovative addition to the city’s educational provision which we know students and parents support,” said Mrs Hannaford. “We look forward to welcoming our first students in September 2017.”

Council approves funding for transport improvements in Derriford area Plymouth City Council has approved funding contributions towards two major transport improvement schemes for the north of the city.

will see a major upgrade to Derriford Roundabout and provide additional traffic lanes, new bus lanes and improved traffic signals, as well as improvements to the William Prance Road junction.‚

The Derriford Transport Scheme and Derriford Hospital Interchange were recently awarded a total of £11.56 million from the Heart-of-the-South-West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) – the body responsible for allocating funding for large-scale transport schemes across Plymouth, Devon, Torbay and Somerset.

The remaining £2.56 million will be covered by contributions from planned development sites in the area, but the council has agreed to fund this from its capital budget in advance of receiving the contributions.

This includes a £10.16 million contribution towards the £12.72 million Derriford Transport Scheme, which

The council has also approved £840,000 funding contribution towards the new Derriford Hospital Interchange, which was awarded £1.4 million from the HotSW LEP. Delivered in partnership with Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, this scheme will help to reduce

congestion and make bus journeys to and from the hospital quicker and more reliable. Both schemes are part of a ‘master plan’ of highway improvements that will help to unlock development and deliver the 9,000 new jobs and 3,000 new homes that are proposed for the north of the city. This also includes the proposed Forder Valley Link Road, which was recently earmarked to receive £22.5 million from the Growth Fund and the new Marjon Link Road, currently under construction. More information about the Derriford Transport Scheme is available online at www.plymouth.gov.uk/ derrifordtransportscheme. First prize of a party for 10 children went to Miss Macdonald from Bardsey Close with runners up prizes going to Maria Davis from Keyham and Michele Barker from Plympton

Launch of specialist company to meet needs of military A new UK financial services company is launching this spring, aiming to better and more fully meet the needs of armed forces personnel and families. The Military Mutual (TMM), will officially launch at the end of April (www.themilitarymutual.com) offering a range of insurance solutions that will better match the varied and often complex needs of military personnel - Regulars, Reservists and Veterans from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force and their family members. TMM has been created to support both those serving and the wider military family and embodies the bonds of loyalty, trust and responsibility which are enshrined in the Armed Forces Covenant. The new company is led by distinguished ex-military personnel from all three services in conjunction with experts in mutuality whose values mirror those of HM Armed Forces. With the major political parties committed to fostering greater diversity and choice in financial services, TMM’s launch also represents a major boost for the mutual sector. As a mutual, the organisation is owned by its members and is free of outside shareholder interests. Products will be simple, tailored to member needs and surpluses can be used to benefit the members and the military family. The 60-day countdown to launch has commenced, TMM will be offering its first two products, home and motor cover, from its dedicated Portsmouth service centre - 0800 088 2283. The centre is staffed by people trained to understand military life and its situations, and many of whom have connections to the military.

Dragon Boat racing returns

Dragon Boat Racing is back in Plymouth this June as businesses from across the area take to the water to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice.

For two rival casinos based in Plymouth, the Dragon Boat Race has stirred up a bit a storm on twitter with Plymouth city centre based Grosvenor Casino challenging Genting Casino in a battle of the casinos. General manager from Grosvenor Casinos, Plymouth, Adam Evans said: “The ‘tweet off’ was a friendly way of challenging our rivals at Genting to get involved and raise money for St Luke’s. It’s a great way to have a bit of fun and add some additional competition to the event. “We would like to turn Dragon Boat into an annual event between our two casinos. We are thinking of getting a little trophy made for the winners that might be passed onto the winning team each year and a wooden spoon for the losers!” Grosvenor Casino took part in the event last year and Adam added: “It’s a great team building event for staff and their families who came along to support There was face painting for the children, a great atmosphere and that sense of wellbeing that comes with fundraising. I think this year we will participate in fancy dress.” Taking part for their first year as a result of the twitter challenge is Genting Casino Plymouth. In response to the challenge marketing advocate, Karen Sparrow said: “When we got the ‘tweet off’ from Grosvenor Casino challenging us

to take part, there was no way we were ever going to say no!

with the business community and their families.

“To get involved in raising money and awareness for St Luke’s is great in itself, to beat Grosvenor Casino at the same time makes it even sweeter, it’s all good friendly fun.”

“It is great value when you actually break it down. The cost of a boat spread across a team of 20 only works out to be £22.50 per person! Have a look at what fun we had last year on St Luke’s youtube page.”

Karen added: “I’d like to keep our tactics a secret for now, playing our cards close to our chest, saying this with my best poker face.” St Luke’s Dragon Boat Race launched in 2014. One of the teams that took part was Everyone Active from Plymouth Life Centre. Operations manager Tom Peonides said: “We took part in 2014 and our team loved it. The atmosphere was fantastic, it was such great fun and the St Luke’s events team were superb. “We had a team of 16 and it really helped us gel as a team, making us use essential skills such as team work and communication. We left at the end of the day as a happy, exhausted but really motivated team. Great event. I would really recommend signing your team up for 2015, I know we will be.” Events Fundraiser at St Luke’s, Graham Richardson said: “This year we are aiming for 25 teams to take part, raising over £15,000 for patient care. For me this event is a great way for our charity to engage

Enterprise Zone status boost for South Yard Plymouth’s South Yard is to become an Enterprise Zone, making the site even more attractive to businesses.

• Government grants to install superfast broadband

Chancellor George Osborne announced in the Budget that the bid put forward by the Heart of the South West Local Economic Partnership (HotSW LEP) on behalf of the city had been successful.

• Tax relief for investments in equipment

The status means that businesses based there have more freedom to expand and reinvest, thanks to a series of tax breaks and planning flexibilities. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “Plymouth was one of only a small number of areas which submitted a business case. If this is another way of bringing in secure jobs into the city, it had to be worth going for and hearing the news we have been successful is marvellous for the people of Plymouth. “This is a great example of how we are working with local economic partnerships to make things happen which not only pays dividends for the city but also has wider benefits for the region. “This will help make South Yard an even more attractive proposition to businesses interested

in setting up in this unique location.” Set up in 2012 there are now 24 enterprise zones across the country. Benefits include: • A business rate discount over five years, with the Government reimbursing the council the discount cost • All business rates growth generated within an enterprise zone will - for at least 25 years - be kept and used by the local enterprise partnership and local council to reinvest in economic growth. • Simplified planning regulations with automatic planning permission for certain development within specified areas

Following a recent letter from the Council leader Tudor Evans to the Chancellor George Osborne, HM Treasury indicated it was willing to consider a business case from Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership for an Enterprise Zone. The business case will build on plans to develop a Marine Industries Production Campus (MIPC) at South Yard as part of Plymouth and South West Peninsula City Deal. The Enterprise Zone will cover South Yard. Outline planning application to transform areas into a dynamic new centre for the south west’s marine sector has already been submitted. It is expected to bring with it 1,200 jobs. The application covers the refurbishment of existing buildings as well as new builds, with careful provision for the site’s docks, heritage and listed buildings.

Plymouth-Based Greenergy has sponsored school crossing patrol staff - lovingly known as lollipop ladies and men - throughout Plymouth to help highlight the importance of everyday safety. New top of the range uniforms help shield lollipop staff from the wind and rain while making them highly visible to traffic. Greenergy, the UK’s largest fuel supplier, is an established presence on the waterfront in Plymouth and has owned the Cattedown and Mayflower fuel terminals since 2008. Under Greenergy’s ownership both sites have undergone an extensive five year regeneration programme to modernise and extend the facilities and ensure supply security in the South West. Plymouth City Council provides school crossing patrol services at 31 locations close to schools throughout the city. The school crossing patrols’ main task is to help both parents and children safely cross the road, providing an extra set of eyes and ears to protect children on their way to school. They also provide a visible reminder for motorists to slow down and use caution, especially when the stop sign is being displayed.

Vincent Atkins, street crossing patrol officer said: “It’s so satisfying being able to help these children and give them little bits of help and advice. I enjoy coming to the school and seeing everyone safely across the road. The new coats are great, especially with all the bad weather we’ve had recently.” Andrew Owens, Greenergy chief executive, said: “Safety is always our top priority on-site and we wanted to find a way of sharing this commitment with the community. School crossing patrol staff play a vital role in helping

children get to and from school and we’re proud to be associated with their hard work and commitment to everyday safety.” Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health said: “Our school crossing patrols are out in all weathers providing an essential front line service. “I’m delighted that that Greenergy have taken a proactive approach to supporting road safety. The school crossing patrol is highly valued by all those that use it.”

NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY PLANNED FOR CITY CENTRE Plymouth City councillors are set to approve funding for a new flagship library in the heart of the city centre.

“The way people use libraries is changing, with physical visits falling and virtual visits increasing. We know that if we are to protect this important resource for everyone we need to respond to what users want.

The new central library in Mayflower Street would replace the current library in North Hill, making way for the £25 million History Centre which is due to open in 2020.

“The new location will encourage more people of all ages to drop in to borrow books, use free computers, access free Wi-Fi, study, meet with friends or research their family history.

The council’s ambition is to create a modern, flexible and welcoming library that will attract more users and it is asking Plymouth residents to give their views on what they would like to see in it.

“Not only will the new library be a fantastic resource for Plymouth but it will also help breathe new life into an area of the city centre that has long awaited investment. It will complement the new coach hub that we are opening nearby, which will also help attract more visitors to this part of the city centre.”

As well as making way for the new History Centre the new library will deliver a key ambition in the Council’s plan for modernising its library service, which follows an extensive review that listened to customer views and looked at best practice around the country. The new £1.4 million library which is due to open in Spring 2016, will be easier for many users to get to and will be fully accessible for people with disabilities. Deputy Leader Councillor Peter Smith said “This is an exciting opportunity to create a new central library fit for the 21st century. We want to provide a library service that offers facilities and services that people now expect and to create an open, bright, friendly and welcoming environment with opportunities to access wider services.

The council will be asking users to help them co-design the new central lending library from next month (April). People will be encouraged to give their views on what facilities they would like to see in the new library, how they would like to use it and how they would like the space inside the building to be arranged. The popular local studies library collection will move with the lending library to its new home on Mayflower Street until 2020 when it will join the city’s other treasured collections and archive material in the History Centre, taking its place as an important resource for people to use as they explore the story of Plymouth’s past. New skills passport will help open up the world of work A group of Plymouth students from several different city schools have reached the halfway point in the trial of a brand new employability passport to help them with their future employment.

Businesses in the City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) have voted ‘yes’ to a five year business plan that will see millions of pounds being invested into the future of Plymouth’s shopping district.

The passport, developed by schools working in partnership with Plymouth City Council, is also being embraced by businesses from the Building Plymouth initiative that recognise its value to provide better opportunities to create smooth transitions into future employment.

70 percent of businesses agreed to the new city centre BID which will see many projects take place including; strengthening PARC (Partnership Against Retail Crime), improving signature events including Flavour Fest and Christmas Lights Switch On, the development of the new coach hub in the Mayflower West car park, plans to renovate Plymouth City Market and the new Drake Circus Leisure complex.

The scheme is currently being piloted by Devonport High School for Boys and Eggbuckland Community College, with several other Plymouth schools also taking part before the roll out to all city schools this September. Leader of Plymouth City Council Tudor Evans said: “It’s really important that our young people not only have good academic qualifications but they are also able to demonstrate some important life skills like organising, managing time and problem solving for potential employers as well. By linking schools with business initiatives such as Building Plymouth and the 1000 Club we create more opportunities for young people to work with businesses who can validate their skills” Mi-Space, a division of the Midas Group, is supporting the Employability Passport by laying on site tours for students from participating schools, as part of their Open Doors initiative. Students were able to see first-hand the skills required for the regeneration of the historic site at Mount Wise from a former naval headquarters into one of Plymouth’s most desirable places to live. Michelle Cole, community engagement manager for Midas, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this tour for students participating in the Employability Passport. We really want to highlight to young people that the construction industry offers fantastic career options and there are lots of great job opportunities available.”

City Centre businesses say ‘yes’ to major investment

Doug Fletcher, Chair of Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “This is an exciting time for Plymouth, with much change afoot, and by working with our businesses, the local authority and our partners we will grasp every opportunity and really raise the bar of the City Centre.” Sue Morton, information advice and guidance co-ordinator at Devonport High School for Boys and a group of pupils trialling the passport

The passports will give employers more information about students other than just qualifications, including attitude, punctuality and communication skills. It’s intended to embed work skills into the curriculum through real life projects, work placements, internships, and greater engagement between businesses and schools. This will show prospective employers the work and real life skills that students have gained. The passport currently being trialled will offer three levels of awards, Bronze, Silver and Gold depending on levels of achievement, with progression between levels. Activities from existing initiatives, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, can be considered as evidence for

different challenge areas within the Employability Award. Elaine Budd, the 1000 Club coordinator said: “Plymouth’s local employers and educators have confirmed the need for more young people to be instilled with attitudes and skills that make them ‘job ready’. The 1000 Club was established to support businesses to create more opportunities for young people and is therefore an obvious partner to support the successful adoption of the pilot. “We have already started supporting mock interviews in schools to help develop the higher levels of employability skills demanded in today’s competitive employment market”.

The BID will raise £8.6 million over the next five years which will be used for projects to support businesses and provide a cleaner and safer city centre. Investment will also be used as part of a shop front improvement programme, marketing the city and providing a series of events to draw in the crowds. Stefan Krause, City Centre Manager, said: “This quite literally is the best news I have had all year. We have worked hard over the past few months to campaign for the BID, and it won’t stop there. We have already started to get the ball rolling on our promises – it’s going to be a busy five years.” Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, and Plymouth City Centre Company Board Member, Mark Lowry, said: “We are absolutely delighted. This is great news not just for the city centre – but for Plymouth as a whole.”

Children’s Hospice South West seeks shop volunteers Do you have a couple of hours to spare each week? Are you looking for an enjoyable and rewarding role that will really make the difference to other people’s lives? Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is looking for volunteers to help out with the day to day running of its charity shops in Plymouth. You may be a student looking for CV-building retail experience or you may be retired and looking to contribute to a worthwhile local charity. Whatever your age or background, we would love to hear from you. Children’s Hospice South West offers help and support to the families of children with lifelimiting illnesses and conditions throughout the region. The charity relies almost entirely on voluntary contributions which is why the CHSW shops are such an important part of the hospice’s fundraising. CHSW has two shops in Plymouth, a shop on Mutley Plain for home and furniture goods, bric a brac, children’s items and accessories and a shop on Cornwall Street for clothing and other charity shop goods. Being part of the CHSW volunteering team is a great way to meet and interact with like-minded people as well as learn new skills. Head of retail at CHSW, Darren Irwin said: “Volunteers are the backbone of our charity and without them we would not be able to provide the valuable service we give today. Our shops are a valuable resource to us and your support as a volunteer will help us to maximise sales and raise awareness of Children’s Hospice South West.” So if you have a little time to spare each week, would like to meet new people and help make a real difference to the lives of the children and families the charity supports, please call Steph Robey, retail volunteer advisor at Children’s Hospice South West on 01271 325270 or email volunteer@chsw.org.uk

Tree Partnership branches out as a registered charity Plymouth Tree Partnership has taken a major step in its important work of planting and caring for trees in the city. At a meeting held in the Babbage Centre of Plymouth University in March, its members voted to become a registered charity with a new membership structure. The move was prompted by reductions in local government spending and the partnership’s experience in delivering tree projects since 2010. The partnership’s chairman, Andrew Young, explained that Plymouth needs 200 new urban trees every year just to maintain tree cover at existing levels. Many street trees from the early 20th century are approaching the end of their lives and the shorter-lived flowering trees planted with the post-War rebuilding are also in decline. He said that becoming a charity would open new funding routes and make it easier to undertake new planting schemes. Plymouth Tree Partnership continues to manage the local tree warden network as part of the national scheme run by the Tree Council. Tree wardens are volunteers who care for young trees until they are fully established and growing well. It involves a few simple but essential tasks such as watering, keeping ties and stakes adjusted, pruning for crown shape and reporting any issues. As well as its practical activities, Plymouth Tree Partnership organises lectures and guided walks to share knowledge and experience about trees. 8

Revealing the F Word - forgiveness A powerful collection of real life stories in words and photographs from people who have been affected by crime, violence and tragedy will be featured in a Plymouth exhibition in May.

The F Word will be hosted from Sunday May 17 to Wednesday May 20 at the Plymouth Adventist Church in North Road East. Made up of arresting images and personal narratives, the exhibition has been created by The Forgiveness Project, a UK-based charity that explores forgiveness in the face of atrocity. It draws together 22 thoughtprovoking stories from victims, survivors and perpetrators of crime from all around the world. The F Word will be in Plymouth and Bodmin to help mark the 10th Project and help provoke discussion around the subject of forgiveness, reconciliation and restorative justice.

“Forgiveness is a concept that cuts public opinion down the middle like a guillotine, inspiring and affronting in equal measure. That’s why I named it The F Word. However, whilst the exhibition’s stories tackle extreme cases of tragedy and injustice, they seem to shed light on our own smaller grievances and allow us to put them in a new perspective.”

The exhibition’s storytellers include Linda Biehl, whose daughter was killed in South Africa and now works alongside her daughter’s killers, Eva Kor, who was

ahala was 6 years old when she attended a Jeremiah’s Journey group programme with her brother, George, who was 8 years old. The charity provides bereavement support to children and families who live in Plymouth and the surrounding area. Their grandfather had died during the night so no one knew until the next day which was also Mahala’s Birthday party. She said people were asking her why she was so sad. The children’s school later suggested to George and Mahala’s mum about contacting Jeremiah’s Journey. Following an initial phone conversation a home visit was arranged to meet the family. This provides a helpful opportunity to hear about how things are for the children in their own words. George said that at this first meeting he was worried and not sure about it at all. He was however happy to listen. At the end of the visit both he and his sister had decided that they did want to join Jeremiah’s Journey because they were feeling really sad about granddad. George decided to give the group sessions, held at Plymouth College of Art, a shot and Mahala felt hopeful that it was going to help her. “It felt like we were on a journey from sad to happy.” The idea behind the group programmes is that they bring children together who have

had similar experiences, in this case that they have all had someone special to them who have died. The sessions themselves use a mix of therapeutic creative activities and space to talk and reflect. As George said it was tricky to talk about feelings so using coloured sand to represent the different feelings associated with grief helped him to show how he was feeling. His sister added that writing down their feelings at the beginning of the group was useful so that at the end of the six week programme they could see how they felt. Mahala noticed a change in her feelings and said this was because the group had helped her along the way as it reminded her about all the happy things. One of the ways that we focus on memories in the groups is by making a memory box. The idea is that the outside is decorated to make it all about the child’s special person who has died. For George this included putting 2 handprints, one for him and one for his granddad. Inside the box the children put in a collection of items that help them to remember their significant loved one. George and Mahala both have a range of lovely items that represent how important their granddad was to them. They both have photos of him holding them when they were George’s drawing babies,

Giving in Celebration Mahala’s drawing George has a glass paperweight representing the football team that he and his granddad supported together and Mahala has the cup that she used to drink her hot chocolate out of when she visited their granddad. Recently they have had another bereavement which has meant that they have used these ideas over again to help them cope with their new sadness. Another focus for the sessions is about coping with grief so that children can enjoy other parts of their lives again. There are specific activities around helping ourselves feel better if we are sad, angry or worried which were useful to both Mahala and her brother. The groups and the team of skilled professionals who facilitate the sessions find ways to enable children to express their worries. The hope is that by letting out feelings and talking about experiences it will help to feel more manageable. George said that after going to the group: “It felt like a better place. When you came out of the door it was like you had left your worries behind”. Both George and Mahala were keen to share their story about their very special grandfather and their experience of Jeremiah’s Journey in the hope that it will help other children like them. City College Plymouth students visit Heathrow

Travel and tourism students from City College Plymouth had the opportunity to visit the British Airways Cabin Crew training centre during a recent trip to London. A total of 15 students, who are aged between 16 and 20 and studying a diploma to become the next generation of air cabin crew, spent an action-packed day at the Centre getting a taste of what safety training cabin crew undertake before they can fly. The students experienced real emergency simulations, taking part in a fire-fighting exercise, survival at sea on a life raft and an evacuation drill on an aircraft. They also completed a safety demonstration and learned about pilot incapacitation procedures. Travel and tourism student, Shane May-Williams, 17, said: “It was great to go and experience what cabin crew have to do in order to start their flying career and the importance of the safety and

emergency procedures that they have to follow. There was so much training and information they needed to know before they can fly and it was great to see this first-hand.”

Travel and tourism lecturer, Nicky Blair, added: “This was a great opportunity for the students to witness the real training environment of an airline and take part in some of the activities that the airlines use to train their cabin crew. “The students had a great day and participated in all of the activities.” The visit assists the students in completing some of the practical activities that they need to undertake as part of their course. The evidence was recorded by photos and videos of them taking part in the activities and added to their portfolios alongside documented practical tasks carried out in the college’s own replica air cabin. They also received a certificate at the end of the day to mark their achievements at Heathrow Airport.

Brava was the first word my bilingual daughter said in imitation of my praising, and papá was her second word. Her first words were in Italian despite attending a nursery daily where everyone spoke English. I still remember the discomfort I felt when one day the nursery teacher told me that my daughter had been silent for six weeks following a period of two months abroad, but then relieved that she started to be communicative again. My younger daughter, instead, clearly attempted to avoid being exposed to the other language, and preferred to stay in situations where English was spoken, choosing to stay close to her dad who used to talk in English, cheeky girl! We often see that bilingual children shift from one language to another in a way that looks effortless, but their brains have to make an effort to stick to one language and one language only when addressing to a particular speaker. So our question is how does the brain of a bilingual child integrate or separate the two languages? At Plymouth Babylab, 24-month-old bilingual children hear an English voice, for example saying, ‘Yesterday I saw a cat’ and soon after two images representing common objects are presented (for example, a ‘bowl’ and a ‘cat’). At the same time a voice names one of these two pictures in the other language spoken by the child e.g. ‘chat’, which is cat in French. This study will help us to find out if bilingual children are aware that words relate to one another across languages (the word ‘cat’ and the French word ‘chat’). If you are interested in helping out with this study and have a bilingual child who will be 24 months please get in touch so we can arrange a visit. We will invite you into the Babylab (just a five minute walk from the Drake Circus shopping centre) where your child will get to play with our toys and will be awarded a Babylab Scientist certificate, a

Bilingual minds and bilingual brains By Allegra Catini of Plymouth Babylab balloon and can choose from a range of gifts. Plymouth Babylab is also involved in a large-scale study into the assessment of English vocabulary for bilingual toddlers aged 24 months who speak English and one of the following languages: Bengali, Cantonese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Spanish, Urdu, and Welsh. Parents register through an online sign up before their child turns two. Mums and dads are asked to indicate how much English and the other language, e.g. ‘Danish’, their child hears during a typical week through a detailed questionnaire and to fill in a list of words their child knows and says in English and in the other language. http://www.psy. plymouth.ac.uk/ukbilingualtoddlers/ More generally, Plymouth Babylab is interested in how all children develop, so if you have a child aged 0 to 6 years and you would like to contribute to research, please contact us at the BABYLAB on 01752 584865 or visit www.plymouthbabylab.org. If you would like to take part in studies in psychology as an adult, please contact the PSYLAB on 01752 584853 or visit www. plymouthpsylab.org.

‘Wonderful’ croquet sessions return to college

A new group of Year 7 students at a Plymouth secondary school are carrying on the monthly croquet games with older people, many with dementia, which are becoming something of a tradition.

‘In a world obsessed with 50 Shades of Grey, Exit Darcus hits back with 100 rays of light.’ Al Gibson, author

James and Andrew Creasey from JiminyWicket paid a second visit to Stoke Damerel Community College recently to teach the latest group of students how to play croquet. The sports hall was temporarily transformed into a croquet lawn for the morning with equipment provided by JiminyWicket - which the brothers formed after their father Maxwell was diagnosed with dementia. “It is very exciting and satisfying to be back here again with a new group of your fantastic

students,” said James, who travelled from his home in the US to spread the word about the organisation.

“We’re thrilled to see the programme is alive and well in Plymouth – it’s just great to see all the smiles on everyone’s faces.” The College holds monthly croquet games between students and groups of older people and Phyllis Symons, a resident from Manor Court Care home said she had a “lovely” morning. “I’ve never played croquet before but the students gave me plenty of help, they are very kind,” she said. “I’m looking forward to coming back.” Stoke Damerel was invited to become one of 21 Dementia Pioneer Schools as part of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia in 2012. Since then the College has worked to embed dementia education across the curriculum from running the croquet sessions to designing dementia-friendly games in Maths. In May 2014 the College was the winner in the Alzheimer’s Society’s first ever Dementia Friendly Awards in the School/College category. Luke Pollard, Labour and Co-operative Parliamentary Candidate for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, attended the session and described the project as ‘inspirational’.

‘Powerful Emotional Captivating’

“I hope other schools across the country look at what is being achieved here and replicate it,” he said. “Plymouth is a national leader when it comes to tackling dementia.

Spring is a great time for home improving

Feature by Karen With Spring in the air, there is nothing more appealing than strolling along the neighbourhood past well kept gardens and homes. Living in a city as we do, our urban environment becomes vital to our sense of well being, and although we may not always realise it, the work we do on our homes and gardens, not only benefits us as we step inside the front door, but has a positive effect on our neighbours and friends too. And we don’t need unlimited budgets of tens of thousands of pounds, despite what the property programmes will tell you. Good home improvements often rely on sourcing quality professionals locally, who wont require you to take out a second mortgage, but will be able to kick start you falling in love with your home again for a lot less than you think. We’ve sourced a few snapshots of some local tradespeople who will do exactly that, taking as much pride in their own work as you will in showing off their handiwork to others. If you want to get hold of them, and I’m sure many of you will, then their contact details can be found on their adverts on this page.

George’s marvellous(?) medicine...

George Osborne has just delivered his last Budget speech before the election. As it stands, the election is too close to call, so who knows if he’ll get another opportunity. This month, I thought I’d look at what’s in it for us, and what we can do to take advantage of the changes announced.

Changes affecting households There are a huge number of changes, so I’ll focus on the major ones affecting most of us. Income tax The increase in the personal allowance is welcomed, if you earn over £10,000 per year. At the average Plymouth salary of £24,000, this will save around £10 per month. There’s a big increase in the amount of savings income that you can earn tax free, if your other income is less than £15,600 next year. If you fit the criteria, you may be able to earn up to £15,600 a year free of tax, even without the use of ISAs. National Insurance The rates already announced in December 2014 have not been adjusted. The change will save someone on the average Plymouth salary about £1 per month. Tax credits There are small increases to the amounts,

and the income thresholds beyond which they are withdrawn. Other changes

Money for South West transport schemes There is £7 billion for investment in transport schemes in the South West. This should make Plymouth an even more attractive place to live and work. New Enterprise Zone A new zone based on the Dockyard was announced. Typically, there are business rate, capital allowances, and planning advantages for businesses located in Enterprise Zones. Local newspapers The editor will be pleased to hear that Government will consult on ways to bring tax benefits to local newspapers! A word of warning The Budget includes a massive reduction in the deficit in 2016/17, which has to be paid for from higher taxes or expenditure cuts. We need to assume this is coming, and use the next 12 months to adjust our own budget so we are prepared for their budget changes. Action to take Families should rework their budgets and see if they can put aside some savings ready for the (even) leaner years to come. Small businesses should look at their chosen structure and consider whether a change

to a limited company would be beneficial, or whether they should relocate to the new Enterprise Zone (when it’s set up). Conclusion Although trailed as ‘not a giveaway budget’ there are a number of small savings that can be taken, and each of us should take a look at our own positon to see if we can benefit. And even if George is not Chancellor on May 8, chances are his replacement will not make things worse for ordinary people, so the action won’t be wasted. Green Flag bid for Ham Woods winner of a Green Flag.”

This year for the first time Ham Woods nature reserve will be considered for a Green Flag Award.

The Green Flag scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards and creates a benchmark of excellence in green spaces.

Each year Plymouth City Council submits entries for each green space to be considered for a Green Flag.

 FathersHouseSW

Thanks to the hard work and dedication by Friends of Ham Wood and All Saints Church of England Academy, the Council feels that this year the nature reserves at Ham Woods stands a very good chance of being awarded a prestigious Green Flag.

Tudor Evans and Brian Vincent busy planting bulbs

Ahead of judging which will take place in May, Council Leader Councillor Tudor Evans and Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Brian Vincent, have been helping pupils from All Saints Church of England Academy plant bulbs; bulbs which should be in full bloom when the judges arrive.

Council Leader Tudor Evans said: “Everyone has done a fantastic job with Ham Woods over the last few years and the number of people visiting and using the space has increased dramatically. They should be very proud of what they have achieved here and I believe Ham Woods nature reserve is a deserving

To meet the Green Flag Award standard the judges are looking for green spaces to be healthy welcoming places that are safe and secure, clean, wellmaintained and sustainable. The management of the green space must involve the community, pay attention to conservation and heritage and include marketing of the site.

Plymouth’s green spaces will be judged in May and any Green Flags will be awarded in June/July.

The Green Flag Awards are the national standard of excellence for parks and green spaces. Plymouth currently holds six Green Flag Awards for parks and green spaces including, Hoe Park, Freedom Fields and Devonport Park.

Emerging artists, an allotment and educational facility, a cultural hub, a business advice company and an indoor skate park are all due to benefit from an injection of cash thanks to Plymouth City Council’s social enterprise fund.

Plymouth City Council is believed to be the first council in the country to have a Social Enterprise Investment Fund, and this week they have awarded £142,000 to five social enterprises, creating over 29 new jobs. The awards have been made following a highly competitive application process.

The Social Enterprise Investment Fund comes from the Council’s ‘Building for Jobs’ Investment Fund –

one of the Council’s 19 ‘Plan for Jobs’ projects aimed at unlocking stalled developments, creating new jobs and levering in additional public and private sector finance.

One of the projects is Stiltskin, who propose to develop an un-used building in Devonport Park, and turn it into a Children’s Cultural Hub, creating over five jobs and cultural events that the whole family can enjoy.
Other businesses which have been awarded funding during this round include Prime Skate Park, an indoor skate park situated in Cattedown, which attracts users mainly aged between 9 and 25 as well as national and international professional skaters.

The investment fund of £29,000 will enable Prime to build additional facilities including

ramps and obstacles.

The Alamo Project, a professional artist’s studio in Millbay aim to offer incubation space for emerging artists leading toward their own studios and self-employment. Their package is £10,000 of match funding towards feasibility work.

The other two projects are BEES UK, an allotment and education facility working with young people in Plymstock. With their £77,050 award they hope to offer employment and training opportunities for school leavers who may otherwise struggle to find employment; and
Iridescent which aims to be the leading social enterprise business advice company in the South West. They have been awarded £16k to help grow and expand the business.

Oceans of fun at Armed Forces Day Air displays, military field gun competitions, parachute jumping and a Beatlemania tribute show are some of the exciting things planned for Plymouth’s Armed Forces Day 2015.

This year’s Armed Forces Day, organised by Plymouth City Council, brings together personnel from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines, as well as representatives from the Royal British Legion, the Veterans community, local children representing Plymouth’s Community Covenant and representatives from the cadet services. Taking place on Saturday June 27 on Plymouth Hoe this event is expected to be bigger and better than ever before. Working in partnership with The Royal Navy, The Army, RAF and Royal Marine Commandos, Armed Forces Day provides an opportunity for the city to say “thank you” to the city’s troops and families for their commitment and hard work. It also brings together the city in a mass celebration and gives something back to the community. During Armed Forces Day visitors will be able to speak with military personnel as well as be entertained by a number of air, water and arena displays.

Already confirmed, and provided by the Royal Navy, will be a flying Sea King SAR demo (helicopter), a BlackCat (helicopter) as well as a static Merlin helicopter for visitors to view on the ground.

In addition, the Royal Naval Raiders Parachute Team will make a ‘flying’ visit as well as the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon and Tutor air displays. Following the huge success of recent years, a live music concert will continue into the evening with Beatlemania and ZU2 being the main acts. If that’s not all, an extension to the event will see the Royal Naval Volunteer Band Association Festival bring their annual festival to the city and perform on the Hoe on Sunday June 28. This prestigious festival is an annual event in the naval calendar and will showcase the talents of 400 volunteer musicians, making up nine bands. Bands from all over the UK will entertain the crowds with their musical marching displays as well as their stage performances in this daylong event. Armed Forces Day and the Royal Naval Volunteer Band Association Festival are part of Plymouth’s 2015 summer events programme. Other events include MTV Crashes, Flavour Fest, Ocean City Festival and the British Firework Championships, which will host the Red Arrows this year.

Why it is so important to ‘show up’ and vote

BEACON BLINDS

duo I was aware of an initiative from many Christian organisations to encourage their constituencies to vote. This initiative is called ‘Show up’ and if you Google ‘Show Up Campaign’ you can find lots more information, or go to www.christiansinpolitics.org.uk/showup.

Freedom comes at a great cost. One aspect of freedom in our democracy is the right to vote, for everyone to have a say in the choosing of the party that will be elected to govern our nation in the next five years.

In the vein of combating voter apathy, Show Up has been created in response to the growing disillusionment many voters feel towards politics in the UK. There is a growing sense that voting no longer makes a difference. Show Up aims to tackle this by making it clear that our participation is vital.

Over the centuries, that right has been hard won in some respects. In other nations even today, where totalitarian regimes are in the process of being replaced through a more democratic process, people queue to vote, often risking life and limb to do so. We do well to value the freedom we have, and perhaps suspend our cynicism to engage in that process.

Christians in politics events and communications manager, Mark Scott, comments that “at a time when we’re constantly being reminded how disillusioned we are with politics,

We’re coming up to the month of May and one of the more important times for our democracy in terms of making sure your voice is heard. It is voting time on May 7.

“it is remarkable the support this campaign has got, capturing the imagination of MPs, churches and Christian organisations all over the UK”.

I’ve observed two events on the ‘right to vote’ which impacted upon me. One was the millions who voted in South Africa when Nelson Mandela was mandated to lead South Africa into its future after the demise of apartheid.

Archbishop Justin Welby has added his support to the campaign stating that “The important work of Christians in Politics and the ‘Show Up’ campaign in the run up to the General Election, is challenging and encouraging in equal measure.”

The second were the Iraqis who at great personal risk of suicide bombers stood in line to vote after the downfall of Sadam Hussein.

Of course, voting is the responsibility for all of us who enjoy the freedoms outlined in a mature democracy.

Put simply if we don’t use our vote it is difficult to On a recent Destiny Plymouth programme, which airs comment afterwards. impact and provide in excess of 5000 jobs up to and beyond 2020 in Plymouth alone.” The two Plymouths shared their combined visions to develop an internationally important programme of commemoration and celebration events, which will be enjoyed by residents and visitors to the two cities. There was also a conference for the wider ‘Plymouth Colony’ which stretches from Boston down to Cape Cod to share the developing plans which will include those of the wider UK partners as well. The visit included both Plymouth’s officially announcing their partnership and launching a tourism campaign that promotes the heritage and history of the Mayflower, providing national and international recognition and commemorating the legacy this has left. Amanda Lumley, chief Executive of Destination Plymouth, said: “With only five years to go until 2020 we need to start moving forward with our overall plans, not only for 2020 itself but the yearly build-up to the 400th anniversary. We have had great support so far from Visit England and Visit Britain and we will now meet with key contacts and Brand USA to develop our plans for Plymouth, the South West and the UK partners further. The Illuminate event that took place last year was a great example of how Plymouth UK and Plymouth Massachusetts work together but we can’t rest on our laurels if we are to give this moment in history the visibility it deserves.” Dom Jinks, executive director of Plymouth Culture, said: “This delegation to Massachusetts was an opportunity to further develop relationships and the programme for Mayflower 400. We met several cultural organisations to

share programme ideas to hopefully create something very special for 2020. These projects have the potential to create stunning events for the people of Plymouth that will leave a legacy and significantly develop the visitor economy of the city.” Plymouth is already working with its wider ‘Mayflower compact’ partners across the UK and Holland and starting to develop plans and ideas with them for national programmes and activities. • The Pilgrim Fathers set sail from Plymouth to America on the Mayflower, a three-masted ship, on the 16 September 1620, and arrived 66 days later in Cape Cod on the US East Coast on 21 November 1620 before finally landing in the colony of Plimoth in the state of Massachusetts on 21 December 1620. It is estimated that over 16 million Americans today are directly descended from those on the ship.

Plymouth’s contemporary Mayflower compact was signed by a number of partners from the Mayflower trail on the anniversary of the original signing 394 years after the Pilgrim Fathers landed in Massachusetts in 1620.

It symbolises the coming together of all the cities, towns and communities on the Mayflower trail that represent the original Pilgrims and this globally significant journey. By signing this compact the cities commit to each other to work collaboratively towards 2020 – the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower.

Growing reputation of the Horticultural Therapy Trust Plymouth’s Horticultural Therapy Trust is working hard to keep happy green fingers thriving in the community, writes Naomi Girdler. The Trust has been running for the last three years, working within the community to give vulnerable adults and children a chance to get at one with nature as well as the opportunity to socialise and interact with other people in similar situations. They currently have 20 people using the project from all different types of backgrounds. Deb Hoskin and Dennis Trewin, both former employees of the charity Groundwork South West, set up the trust after the organisation went into administration in 2012. The horticultural therapy project was one that both Deb and Dennis felt was a lifeline to the community of people they were serving. Deb continues: “I’m not just passionate about gardening, I’m passionate about people. We work with a lot of people with severe needs, such as mental health issues or brain injuries. It’s not just about supporting them, listening to their problems and helping them address their needs, but also to encourage them to socialise, discouraging them from withdrawing from society and helping them learn to trust others.’ Deb, who’s background stems from over 14 years of volunteer work with the last five years in horticultural therapy, began her work in her own children’s primary schools, working with the kids to get them outdoors and hands on within nature and gardening. Ranging from the age of three to the age of 16, she found that it has helped children thrive in a social environment, with a sense of accomplishment and achievement. “I also work with young offenders, and we’ve found that the impact this type of therapy can have on the children is mind blowing. It’s a creative outlet and these simple, small steps really allow a child to come out of his or her shell and begin to interact with other children. Through traumatic childhood experiences, aggression and anger can often be a cry for help. This

recent fundraising at the Lush Plymouth store raising £388 for an art shed.

Dennis has 40 years of experience in gardening, with a history trained by Kew, working for the Dartington Hall Trust, and was once a commercial buyer for the Plymouth Garden Centre. His expertise allows people to not only get some respite from their day to day routines, but also allow vocational and informal horticultural training opportunities.

Deb explains: “We’ve got all the funds and all the materials now, which is so very exciting. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated, and to Lush for organising the fundraiser.”

Dennis goes on: “It’s even harder nowadays for vulnerable people with constant benefit cuts and a lack of support out there. It often falls on smaller charities such as ourselves to help these individuals. We have a huge passion for what we do and it’s through this passion and commitment that we keep this project going, but it takes a lot of work. We always need donations, volunteers and funds.’ Based at the Penlee Valley Allotment, with projects such as the Wildlife Project, Seeds of Change and Garden and Grow, they all aim to help those from the ages of three up to 90 years old help interact with nature and in the same way interact with others. By visiting schools and residential homes, the Horticultural Therapy Trust works with people in every walk of life with a varying degree of different needs and issues. The Trust have many exciting plans in the pipeline, with a

Balmy weather is nothing new! Long before global warming was ever mentioned, Plymouth was being hit by balmy weather. In the great storm of January 1814, the snowfall in Plymouth fell to a depth of twenty inches in just six hours. The snow lasted for six weeks. During the great blizzard of March 1891, the people of Plymouth had a rare opportunity for skating when the Chelson Meadows flooded and froze over. Water supplies to the city were halted as underground pipes froze.

Derek Tait looks back on the floods in 1929 which hit much of Devon and Cornwall - preceded by a heat wave in 1928. Derek has had many other books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk Terrace, Prince Rock, during the floods, the local postman carried out his duties wheeled in a bath-chair. Thanks to fine spells experienced this weekend, the floods have subsided in most districts.’

The photos shown here show a flood in Tamerton Foliot in November 1929. The heavy rains flooded much of Devon and Cornwall during the month and the story of Tamerton Foliot was reported in the Western Morning News of Friday 29th November 1929. It read:

After the heavy rain, serious gales hit the area during December bringing down trees and causing much disruption.

‘Waters invaded Tamerton Foliot yesterday and entered many of the cottages, the occupants of which had to move their furniture to drier quarters. ‘The river, which has swollen to a lake, is partially restrained from the flooded main road by a high wall, and on the stream side it is said that the water is about six feet deep. Planks span the gardens as improvised bridges. ‘The general traffic to and from the village is diverted to another road but several cars came to grief yesterday on the flooded main road.’

By Monday 2nd November 1929, the Western

A boy adrift in a tin bath

Morning News was reporting the ongoing plight of Plymouth residents under the headline ‘Beleaguered by Floods.’ The story read:

The rainfall, which has caused so much flooding to the Westcountry during November, has broken all previous records. In the Plymouth area, the fall has been the heaviest since 1914.

‘In Plymouth, the weather was brilliant. Bathing was popular among holidaymakers. The scene from the Hoe could not have been equalled. In the blue distance could be seen the white-sailed yachts drifting on a sapphire sea. Fresh water being handed to The maximum Tamerton Foliot residents confined by the flood to their upper temperature for the day was rooms 75 degrees comparing favourable with the 80 degrees in the shade in London.’

In the lower part of Stenlake

Fashion also got a mention in the article:

‘A serious situation faces some of the residents in the Laira district of Plymouth as a result of the floods. They have been besieged in their upper rooms and have had to be conveyed to and fro in a large boat requisitioned for the purpose. Provisions and newspapers were brought to them by the same means. Today, two large lorries provided by the corporation will replace the boat. Throughout yesterday, pumping operations were carried out by the fire engine.

On a brighter note, during the previous summer, in July 1928, Plymouth was enjoying a heatwave, which can be seen in the final photo, shown here, of two girls, complete with drinks and a parasol. There was much written in the newspapers about the warm, hot summer of 1928 including this article from the Western Morning News of 20th July:

A man chases away a pair of ducks which have invaded his flooded sitting-room

‘Noticeable this year at south-western seaside resorts is the variety of summer frocks worn. A feature is the large number of sunshades. Two or three years ago, sunshades went completely out of fashion, but have quickly come back into fashion again.’

Little seems to have changed over the years. Today’s weather may seem balmy but, it appears, that it’s nothing new!

College apprentices to fill engineering jobs shortfall multi-national company Schneider Electric, who recently donated bespoke Drayton brand training control boards.

City College Plymouth is training the next generation of engineers to help meet employer demand which will generate an additional £27billion per year for the UK economy from 2022. A recent report, produced by EngineeringUK, analysed the engineering industry’s capacity and capability for growth and detailed engineering provision in education, training and employment.

The college’s 2012 Ofsted report specifically highlighted the College’s engineering provision as outstanding and they are number one in the south west for Apprenticeships, with success rates 15% above the national average, meaning their engineering apprentices get the best possible start to their career.

Joe Barber

It showed that engineering accounts for a quarter (24.9%) of UK turnover, but that there is a current annual shortfall of 55,000 skilled workers. Ready to fill the void are young City College trained apprentices like 18-year-old Joe Barber, who is employed as a fabrication and welding apprentice with Pipex px® a group of privately owned advanced engineering and manufacturing companies based in Plymouth. Joe, who lives in Honicknowle, said: “I knew I wanted to go into the engineering profession, but I wasn’t quite sure what route I wanted to take. After talking to the college team, I knew an apprenticeship was

perfect for me, as I learn better onthe-job and I wanted to earn a wage. “Going to the college one day a week enables me to pick-up new skills, which I am then able to take back to the workplace and put into practice. The lecturers are all industry trained and have a wealth of knowledge that they pass on to us. I know I’m learning from the best both in the classroom and with Pipex px®.” The college’s state-of-the-art Engineering Centre, which was refurbished in 2013, offers young people the opportunity to work in true to life workshop environments. The industry standard equipment has been developed with input from engineering employers, including

Joe said: “I don’t know what I would be doing now if I hadn’t applied for this Apprenticeship. I have become more confident as a result and the hands-on, technical experience has really put me ahead. I am a firm believer that, if you work hard, you can achieve anything and, with the support of the college and Pipex px®, I know I can succeed.” Those interested in an Apprenticeship can apply at the college’s Course Information Drop-in on Wednesday 25 March, 4.00pm to 6.00pm, at their Kings Road campus. To find out more about how an apprentice can benefit your business, call 01752 305206 or e-mail employers@cityplym.ac.uk.
