private internal lift leads to a penthouse retreat designed for guests who habitually wield power and influence... particularly those in the habit of making decisions amid restrained, reserved grandeur. On Armistice Day, 1918, Winston Churchill stood at a window of this building watching the crowds celebrate below. Would the great statesman feel comfortable in The Whitehall Penthouse today? We think so. Certainly, he would appreciate the cigar humidor, the curved two-metre-long leather-topped desk and the high-tech communication system. He might also approve of the Savile Row styled dressing room and whisky bar. With dark limed oak panelling and red-leather-panelled bookshelves, the lounge and study have the genteel elegance of a refined gentlemen’s club, albeit with light contemporary touches. On the upper turreted floor, the king-sized bed stands on a sumptuous rug surrounded by the dark stained oak floor, tinted with a light lime wash. The bathroom features a walk-in shower encased in Nero Marquina stone and a bespoke Apaiser stone bathtub, with flooring formed from three varieties of marble. Outside, on the private terrace with views towards Whitehall and Big Ben, a giant chess set provides a diversion from the affairs of state or business.

The bedroom has a king-sized bed with bedside tables to both sides. Both the bed and a sofa and armchair face a minibar and TV shelving unit.

The large room is panelled in straight-grained dark stained oak, with a lime wash to the walls and red leather panelling to the rear of the joinery shelves. In a room that can be divided in two with decorative folding glass doors, one half is given over to relaxation while the other contains a large curved desk. The bespoke desk is made from dark walnut with a leather inlay top, leather-lined drawers and an integrated power supply to run laptops and other devices. Custom-made from bronze-finished metal, the light over the desk has diffusers to create an optimum working light. Along with a large deep sofa, coffee table and armchair with a table and floor-standing lights, the room has a cocktail cabinet containing a wine refrigerator, minibar and an assortment of cocktail items and glasses. The focal chimney breast has a built-in working gas fire, with discreet TV above and accessorised shelving to either side. A small accent chair, upholstered in a quirky interpretation of stingray leather, is a modern take on a traditional antique piece.

The flooring is a mixture of Nero Marquena, Calacatta Oro and Gilallo Siena marble and the walls feature raised and fielded painted panels with Nero Marquena marble to the shower. With underfloor heating, the bathroom has a separate WC and bidet, separate shower, separate freestanding Apaiser stone bath and a double vanity unit. There is a built-in TV at the end of the bath, within the vanity mirror. Roof Terrace
The well-proportioned terrace has 270-degree views of the London skyline. A large sofa faces a working gas fireplace and a chessboard with chess pieces is inset in the Stattorio marble flooring, beside two sets of tables and chairs.
