Oil Rivers and Niger Coast Protectorate 1893, 20/- on 1s. green provisional handstamped at Old Calabar. After a break down in the stock of ½d. stamps some 2d. and 2½d. stamps were overprinted ‘Half Penny’ resulting in a loss for the local Old Calabar Post Office. To cover the accounting deficiency occurring high provisional surcharges were handstamped, including 20/- on 1s. resulting in a profit for the local Post Office. Only a total of nine 1s. were overprinted 20/- in three different colours, of which three are unavailable for collectors in the Royal Collection. The 1893 ‘Old Calabar Provisionals’ are among the rarest of all British Commonwealth stamp issues!
