THE WORD An exclusive Q&A with Emily Watson In THE BOOK THIEF, adapted from the novel by Markus Zusak, Emily Watson plays the stern hausfrau Rosa Hubermann, foster mother to Liesel, the young girl at the heart of the story. From the film’s set in Germany, she speaks about the project.

r

osa must be a joy to play. as strict as she is, she has an extraordinary heart. Absolutely. I’m so thrilled to be doing this. It’s such fun to be someone so extreme, and yet she comes out to be pretty good in the end. In a way, at the beginning, you need to completely perceive it from a child’s point of view as if she is the wicked stepmother. She’s an archetype. Their house is a little bit like a fairy-tale. But then as you get to know her, I think there’s this really interesting moment where it starts to tell the story of this war from the point of view of very, very ordinary German people who are not caught up in the ideology of it. Or they’re caught up in it, because everybody was, but they’re not buying it. I think for her it’s not because she’s particularly radical, she’s just getting on with

her life. This moment arrives where a moral choice lands on her doorstep and she has a split second to make a decision about what’s personal and which way you go. Would you say that she’s the realist to hans’s fantasist? Completely. I keep playing these sort of women who are the breadwinning, make everything work, keep the household together, always on the move, always on the go, don’t have time to be poetic about life, kinds of people! You worked with geoffrey rush on the LIfe anD Death of Peter seLLers. Was it nice to be reunited? As soon as I knew Geoffrey was doing it, it was a no-brainer, really. I haven’t seen

him much since [doing THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS]. He lives in Australia. I’ve probably seen him once or twice along the way. But he’s hilarious. He’s so funny and he makes me laugh. He’s always making up jokes and telling funny stories. You can see he’s just sitting there, thinking about it, and he comes out with the worst joke. He’s very much a clown, which is great for this part. And his work is very detailed. It’s like a dog with a bone, just gnawing away. Is it intriguing for you to play in a story like this from the perspective of a girl who doesn’t understand the bigger picture of what’s going on? Absolutely. Liesel hates Hitler, because her parents were taken away and presumably killed by the regime. But had it been treating her family well, how would she feel? It’s very interesting, also, the whole perspective of Death, treating the war as a thing that’s happening to humanity. I love the line where he says, “I’ve seen so many young men over the years who think they’re running at other young men, but they’re not. They’re running at me.” Did you do research into the period? Well, it’s a period I know quite a lot about anyway, but just being here in Berlin, there’s so much stuff about the war and how ordinary people lived through it and it’s all around you. It’s a city that is so conscious of its history, in a really good, positive way and they aren’t in denial about it. It’s very much that they wear it on their sleeves, and there are a lot of exhibits and museums. It was something that was quite strange at the beginning of rehearsal. I was sitting there talking about the war then you sort of think, “Wow, these people’s parents or grandparents, which way did they jump?” I felt slightly uncomfortable about that, in a way, because how

are we to judge how ordinary people behaved. Would we have behaved the same if we’d been there? You hope that you would have done the right thing. What’s brian Percival like to work with? He’s very focused on the story and the point of view; who’s telling the story. He’s very gentle and he’s really enjoying the time that he has. He’s gone from five to seven pages of script a day on television to two to three pages a day, and that’s a huge difference. You can work in detail, which is great. the interior of the hubermann’s house has been designed to look very lived in. has it been interesting trying to get to know that set and treat it as a home? We worked very hard to make it look like she runs a business from there. She’s always on the go, washing, ironing, and getting things dry. It’s really stressful to get it all done. She’s very stressed out about work always. That’s why she’s so mean to everybody! We had a very clear breakdown of the time of day of each scene, so I worked out with the art department what she’d be doing at any one time. Is it helpful to the performance to make those details your own? Yes. I mean, obviously in a film like this, you have to say I’d really like to have this and this and this. You can’t say, “Oh, I’m going to be cooking an omelette. You need to get the eggs.” For me, particularly in this kind of domestic setting, it’s those kinds of details that make it real and you’re playing somebody who’s always doing. Hans is the opposite. He’s always in the present and he’s often sitting and thinking. He’s a philosopher. She’s a doer. I needed always to be doing something. On the go, go, go. www.thebookthief.com

The Wolf of Wall Street > By Rachel Salveta Based on the true story of wealthy stockbroker Jordan Belfort, 'The Wolf of Wall Street' is Martin Scorsese's depiction of the extreme highs and lows of this young man's incredible journey of success in the dog eat dog world of the stock market. From humble beginnings 'The Wolf of Wall Street' follows Jordan as he makes his first sale to the successes of his own company on the infamous Wall Street. From small change to millions within a short space of time, we witness his indulgence in everything that money can bring. However, when word gets out about this new man about town, the officials are quickly on his case and it's not long before his world comes crashing down around him. From wild party antics to extreme come-downs, this movie has it all, however, in true Scorsese fashion, it is all done so stylishly that you can't take your eyes away from the screen for a second.

It is the fifth project of the ever popular Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration and it seems that they have yet another success to add to their list. After having won the Golden Globe for Best Actor, all bets are on Leo to receive his eagerly awaited first Oscar for his fantastic portrayal of this greedy yet fascinating businessman. And it's not only Leo that has received praise for this movie, Jonah Hill has also been given a nomination for Best Supporting Actor and Scorsese is in the running for Best Director. 'The Wolf of Wall Street' is both outrageous and incredibly humorous, and despite being three hours of runtime, there is never a dull moment as Scorsese takes us on a fascinating ride through the greed and corruption that wealth can bring, making it a definite one to watch.

BE YOUR OWN

STORY... Words by Elaine Burns Photography by Laura McKinnon Model: Lauren Haggarty @ Model Team all clothes by Wear eponymous www.weareponymous.com fashion should be fun and while we like to follow the key trends each season brings, it’s much more important to dress for yourself and adapt a look to suit your own personal style. here’s a preview of the main spring/summer trends that are going to be big in 2014.

it a modern twist. this season is about exploring monochrome from all angles, be it checkered, contrast, houndstooth or intricately woven jacquard fabrics. It never gets old and you are sure to make your clothes a talking point with such a striking yet classic choice.

PasteLs moving away from the fluro-brights and primary colours of the last few years, embrace the soft hues of the pastel palette. We’re going to see pastels everywhere, from jeans to jackets, dresses to bags and it’s going to be a breath of fresh, spring air. When did you last own a pastel piece in your wardrobe? Invest in one key item and you’ll be surprised at how versatile pastel can be.

geo this trend is all about earthy colours, terracotta tones and taking inspiration from mother earth’s natural colour palette. Inject ocean blues or forest greens into the mix to see how effortlessly these colours blend with each other. Just look around you as spring begins to take shape for nature’s example of the geo trend in action.

monochrome always a classic, channel your inner mod and pay homage to the statement that monochrome makes to the world; you know how to work a classic look and give

Anita Celestini of The Podiatry Room tell us a bit about your background. I have been a podiatrist/chiropodist for nearly 20 years having graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1994. during these years I have undertaken additional courses to maintain and update my knowledge, which include Biomechanics, the study of pain related to foot function and podiatric Acupuncture, the treatment of foot pain by means of acupuncture. Having worked previously for both the NHS and other private practitioners, I decided to open my own practice at the Kenilworth medical centre 5 years ago. tell us about the range of foot conditions you treat. All foot conditions are treated, routine podiatry/chiropody ailments such as nail cutting and callous removal, verruca and ingrowing toenails. nail surgery, diabetic foot problems and vascular disease. sports injuries, biomechanics and orthotic prescribing and dispensing. What are the most common foot conditions and what treatment would you administer? In children and teenagers, I mainly see Verrucae, which are contagious and sometime painful warts on the sole of the foot These can be treated in many ways, from

heat to cold to topical acid-based preparations or to more organic or natural compounds such as tea tree or bananas. With adults, its mainly hard skin or callous present of the weight bearing areas of the foot especially on the ball. callous is the thickening of the skin cells which can become a hard plaque. In your opinion why are our feet one of the most important parts of our bodies and what should we do to protect them? People often forget that they are on their feet for a good portion of their day and this can be compounded by extra activities such as sports, running after children or even taking care of pets! In fact the average person walks the equivalent of five times around the earth in a lifetime. your feet are what keeps you up ! are you able to treat patients with foot ailments who are incapacitated? yes, I provide a domiciliary service which treats patients in their own homes, care facilities or even their hospital beds. This service provides all the same treatments which are available to my clinic patients at Kenilworth. for more info call anita on: 01236 734093

Festa della Mamma Words by Claudio Celino

N

ow that Valentine’s Day is over for another year, we’re gearing up for Mother’s Day at Celino’s. Whilst Valentines can be a bit of a hit or a miss depending on your relationship status, Mother’s Day is always a special occasion. Like most kids I always loved getting up early and making my mum breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day. This was a rare occasion when mum let us loose in the kitchen but by midday it was like any other Sunday in the Celino house - mum would have every pot in the house on and would be cooking up a storm for all the family and anyone else who happened to show up! My mum, who sadly passed away 14 years ago, was an amazing person and an

amazing cook. I was reminded of one of the dishes that she excelled at when my dad made it for us this week. I love it when I haven’t had a dish for a while and have forgotten how good it is. The dish in question is Rotolo di Pasta (see recipe below) or “posh lasagne” as it’s known in my family. This dish was introduced to the Celino family around twenty years ago by Zia Antoinetta from Casoria, Naples. My mum would very often make it on special occasions as it is an impressive looking and tasting dish yet there is little work involved in it. Perfect if you want to cook for your mum and impress your whole family this Mother’s Day.

Rip the basil leaves into the Napoli sauce in a pot and add the half carton of béchamel sauce, bring to a simmer stirring well (the sauce will look pinkish). 2. Lay the pasta sheets on a clean dry work surface. Lay one slice of smoked ham on each sheet and trim all edges if required. Mix the Parmigiano Reggiano and the mozzarella in a separate bowl. Sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over each pasta sheet with the ham. 3. Now roll each of the topped pasta sheets like a cigar, wrap with cling film to help hold its shape. Place in the freezer for approx 20 minutes. 4. Using an oven proof dish, spread a layer of the Napoli sauce mix to coat the base well. Remove the Rotolo from the freezer and cut them in half. Then place them so that they are standing upright on the Napoli sauced oven dish. 5. Pour the remaining sauce on top. The top of the Rotolo should be visible above the sauce. 6. Cover with tin foil and bake at 190 degrees for 20 minutes then remove the foil and return to oven for a further 10 minutes. Remove the Rotolo from the oven

and let stand for 5 minutes before serving. ceLIno’s WIne of the month I giaroni Pinot grigio montecrocetta Montecrocetta is located at the foot of Monti Lessini, between Verona and Vincenza. The grapes for this Pinot Grigio are handpicked off the vine at the I Giaroni vineyard in Gambellara. It has a delicate flower bouquet with hints of fruit. It is dry with balanced acidity. A sting in the tail Financial advice with Tom Munro www.tommunro.co.uk Another two query’s from clients last month, both approached direct via an unsolicited phone call the other a text message! by pension liberation companies offering a ‘get rich quick’ solution at great expense to the pension holder. Firstly, as I have said on many occasions, reputable investment companies will never ever contact people direct, so always beware. So how does this scam work? Pension Liberation plans are products designed to release your pension pot before the minimum pension age of 55 converting your pension benefits mainly or entirely into cash. This is achieved by transferring your pension benefits away from your current plan to a new arrangement elsewhere. The new deal then makes your pension pot available as a cash payment back to you, either directly, or indirectly through loans which you are in practice required to repay. Pension liberation plans make significant deductions from the money transferred, loosely described as 'commission' or 'arrangement fees'. It is not uncommon that after these deductions have been made that only 70-80% of the original pension plan value is available. In addition you run the very real risk of HMRC imposing signif-

icant tax charges on you of up to 55% of the value of your pension, yes - more than half of the pension's value, and perhaps additional penalties. The biggest warning I can give though is by taking your pension benefits early, then you are likely to be worse off in retirement, as you would have significantly reduced whatever value you had left. This practice can be considered illegal if you are not told in advance about these key outcomes of liberating your pension in this fashion. For example where you are not informed of the tax penalties, the fees/charges involved or how the remainder of your pension savings are invested. This is referred to as 'Pension Liberation Fraud'. So avoid being disadvantaged and never give out financial or personal information to a cold caller. Speak to an adviser first who is not associated with any proposal you have received for unbiased advice and more importantly a detailed breakdown including the financial penalties of this costly transaction. See you next month.
