ur mission is “To educate Christians who will make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ.” As I reflect on this statement, I wonder about the Dr. Reno Hoff educational process and what mindset we should strive for so that our students will be motivated to want to make a difference. The educational process should have an academic structure that focuses on the “Great Commission” found in Matthew 28:19-20. As an educational institution, we especially focus on the teaching aspect of the commission where it states “…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Where are the commandments that Jesus is referring to? You would be surprised by how many Christian institutions have different answers to this question. Some say it is in the intellectual pursuit, others in society, politics, science, nature, etc. At Corban, we firmly believe that the commandments are found only in one place, the Word of God. When we read the scriptures we realize we should have the mindset that the Lord is speaking directly to us. It is not just a book like any other book; it is the very breath of God as stated in II Timothy 3:16-17, “All scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” We also believe that all Christian men and women should consider their lives as a ministry whatever their vocation. A good definition of Christian education is given by David Claerbaut in his book Faith and Learning on the Edge: “It means teaching students to relate every academic discipline to God’s truth and his self revelation in Scripture, while detecting and critiquing nonbiblical worldview assumptions. It is a distinctly Christian view of what life is all about, the nature of humankind, what our purposes ought to be, and where we are headed eternally.” This is the reason our central academic core at Corban is the Bible and Theology program. Around this core is the liberal arts program, next the professional majors followed by the Christian service programs. In a sense, the central core of Bible and Theology is like yeast which permeates the whole loaf. We acknowledge that as stated in Colossians 2:3, “In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” This educational process and foundation is very effective in laying the ground work for the fundamentals of the faith but something else is needed to change the mindset or attitude of the individual students. In John chapter two, the account is given where Jesus clears the Temple of money changers. Many people wondered why Jesus was so violent because he used a whip and overturned tables. It appears that the Lord lost his cool. Did he really? The disciples did not see it this way. They remembered what is stated in Psalm 69:9, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” They understood that knowledge is not enough, but the use of it with courage is required. There appears to be too much concern about being politically correct and thus our zeal is watered down. Somehow we must instill this godly zeal into our students. In Romans 12:11 it commands us all to “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” How can one make a difference for Jesus Christ and not have zeal? There must be a mindset that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves. God is creating a kingdom or spiritual house and we are individually assigned a key task in building this house. In I Peter 2:5 it states, “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” In all of our academic programs, including adult degree and graduate, we have this goal. Our graduates should be noted as ones who have the knowledge of the scriptures, the world, society, and their profession and have an active Christian life. As you read the various articles in this issue, you will find that there many who are taking the opportunity of becoming change agents in their area of influence. It is exciting to have a part in building this spiritual house.

214 Receive Degrees at Commencement 2008

C

orban’s sixty-second Commencement began with a look to the past. Graduates of fifty years ago were those first honored at the ceremony held Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on campus. Before a crowd of 1,500, an honorary professorship was granted to Dr. Jonathan Parapak of the Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) in Indonesia. Commencement speaker Dr. Matt Lucas provided the challenge to the Class of 2008 before 214 degrees were conferred in the areas of Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education. Challenging the new graduates to lives of service, Corban’s Dr. Matt Lucas offered contrasting examples from a classic children’s story and a contemporary couple engaged in Christian ministry. He urged the Class of 2008, “Be extraordinary and make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ.” With an admonition to “be strong and courageous,” the graduates made their way across the platform to receive their diplomas from Tom Carlson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Four Associate of Arts, seven Bachelor of Arts and 197 Bachelor of Science degrees were conferred. In addition, six candidates for the Master of Science in Education received their academic hoods from the Provost.

Corban’s Caleb Louvier named Cascade Collegiate Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year

C

aleb Louvier of SeaTac, Wash., who graduated this spring with a degree in health science, was Corban’s Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year in 2007-08. In addition to earning NAIA and CCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition last fall, the 5-foot-10 high-scoring midfielder finished an amazing career by concluding with four straight All-Cascade Collegiate Conference first team honors, three straight NAIA All-Region I first team honors, and three straight NAIA All-American honorable mention recognitions. This past season, Louvier led the team in total points with 19 and goals scored with eight. He scored the game-winning goal in Corban’s 2-1 victory over the Eagles of Northwest on September 26th in his next-tolast road game donning the navy and gold. Louvier finished his final campaign ranked

fifth in shots per game (2.88), tied for fifth in goals (8), sixth in goals per game (0.47), sixth in total shots (49), tied for seventh in points (19), and seventh in points per game (1.12), in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. In his four-year career, Louvier tallied 37 goals, handed out 19 assists, recorded 93 points, and registered 194 total shots in 67 games. In Warrior history, Louvier ranks fifth in both goals and points as well as seventh in assists. “Not only is Caleb an exemplary student, he is an outstanding athlete and person of character. Putting all three of these qualities together as Caleb has, sets a standard to what we hope all Corban athletes will aspire,” said Corban athletics director John Nelson. “Corban Athletics is very proud of Caleb and feels fortunate to have had him in a Warrior uniform. We are confident he will be very successful in any endeavor he pursues.” Caleb Louvier

13th Annual Warrior Golf Classic finishes strong

T

he Warrior Athletic Association hosted the 13th annual Warrior Golf Classic on Monday at Creekside Golf Club that included outstanding golf, good weather, and a great day overall for this Warrior athletic fundraising event. Sixty-eight enthusiastic golfers enjoyed the best tournament in the 13-year history of the event, as the shotgun start opened with a

few passing showers before the dark clouds disappeared bringing bright, sunny weather for the remainder of the afternoon. “This is the best tournament that I’ve played in,” commented one golfer. “I enjoy coming to this event and playing in such a well-run tournament.” The day began with the Red Lion Inn Chipping & Putting contest, where both Nate Webb and Hans Reimer holed their putts to force a championship putt-off with Webb rolling his ball to 35.5 inches, beating Reimer by a mere three-quarters of an inch. Following the putting and chipping contest, women’s basketball coach Terry Williams (‘74) opened the festivities in prayer before Corban’s Director of Athletics John Nelson (‘76) 2008 Warrior Golf Classic Winners (left to right): sent everyone off to begin the Gary Williamson ‘86, Team Captain Nelson Zarfas ‘82, Jim Green, day’s golf. and Jeff Dunn ‘05. Once the final putt dropped,

the overall winners with a combined team score of 18-under 54 were Nelson Zarfas (‘82), Jim Green, Jeff Dunn (‘05), and Gary Williamson (‘86). At the awards dinner, Nelson reminded the gathering of Corban’s unique mission to equip its student-athletes to make a difference through their talents for Christ. Nelson thanked everyone for participating in the tournament and helping to support Warrior athletics. “The golf was “interesting” and the fun at the evening awards dinner was a great cap on the day. I thank all the golfers and the great numbers of volunteers that made the event a success.” Overall, the Classic raised approximately $19,000, which will benefit various program enhancement projects as well as helping numerous Warrior teams with nonbudget items. The 2009 Warrior Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday, June 8th, at Creekside Golf Club.

Alumni Impact Their Community Steve & Sheila Nielsen’s family characterizes servant leadership

A

cross the pristine Santiam River in little Mill City, OR, ’93 Corban graduates Steve Nielsen and his wife Sheila (Zervas), raise their three boys and build relational bridges by serving the area’s youth. Residents agree: the Nielsens have immensely impacted their community. From leading Boy Scouts to transporting teens to their fish hatchery jobs, from organizing a pick-up game in the field behind their house to providing comfort and a listening ear, their involvement clearly points to God, Who actively cares for His children. While their family is first priority, Steve and Sheila have always wanted to look selflessly outward. The Nielsens have earned a reputation as “responsible, trusted people who teenagers can relate to,” long-time community member Elaine Hansen declared. “They aren’t afraid to just walk alongside someone who needs help.” The Nielsens minister in their ordinary life roles. Steve works as Mill City’s controller for the school district’s administration. In addition to coaching baseball, wrestling, football, and basketball for his boys’ teams, Steve coaches the same sports for the high school. He’s always willing to coach; the chance to interact with young people is his joy. Sheila, an at-home mom, substitute teacher, volleyball coach, and Young Life leader—just to name a few of her mentoring roles—is the neighborhood mother-hen. According to Steve, it’s not at all unusual to find their three boys with eight to ten other kids gathered at their house getting ready for a game. Friends call their house the “Revolving Door,” because everyone knows they are welcome any time. Such a busy household feels overwhelming at times, but Steve and Sheila

emphasized they are honored and delighted to be significant in others’ lives. Sheila professed, “It’s a privilege to be around the kids and love ’em up!” Neighbor and friend Missy White commented, “They kind of made our neighborhood closer.” White’s children frequent the “Revolving Door.” “Steve and Sheila will do whatever is needed to help you out!” She recognizes numerous demonstrations of how the Nielsens are trustworthy, loyal, and safe, including that kids always contact them for help or advice. “Sheila’s the fastest ‘textor’ I know. I’ve seen her talk on the phone and text three other people at the same time.” The Nielsens are available, caring, and they speak the language of caring in a way kids understand. For instance, Sheila facilitates the Pure Court program for Linn County juveniles. When contacted by the judicial system about a minor, first-time offender, she meets with the family. These juveniles who complete the program and don’t reoffend avoid the higher-court system, clearing their records at 18. Sheila teaches and trains student volunteers for this hands-on judicial exercise. She marvels when, as often happens, a former offender returns to the Pure Court system, this time as a volunteer juror or judge. They build self-esteem and confidence in making good decisions, not to mention a great-looking college resume. Steve and Sheila attributed their Corban experience as excellent preparation for serving. They underscored the Fellowship groups where “you just do life together.” Uniquely, Steve and Sheila resided on campus all four years; and as dorm RAs for two. Steve developed confidence socially and intellectually: “I wouldn’t be qualified to do what I do

“The beauty of their lives is that they’ve figured out how to integrate their kids lives into theirs.” Matt Lucas, Corban Provost

professionally without Corban.” But Steve appreciated his professors the most— “Christian men with character you could look up to.” Sheila also expressed appreciation for the adults in her life growing up. “They were busy, sure—but not too busy for me.” Because of their encouragement, she selected Corban’s education program. It strengthened her gifts with young people. Sheila and Steve both used to work up-front with Young Life, a non-profit, non-denominational, Christ-centered program for teenagers. Now Steve takes a more behind-the-scenes role so Sheila’s God-given passion can flourish. “Sheila’s the type of person people are really drawn to,” Steve affirmed. “To watch her work with kids is such a blessing to me—she’s so natural.” Sheila spiritedly conveyed her role in Young Life Club. Sheila meets clubbers weekly and also leads fifteen girls in a

discipleship group. These young women begged Sheila not to break for the Sheila networks with summer when Club Kayla Simmons, a Young Life member in Mill City. Nights ended; so they continue to meet at 6 a.m. every Thursday morning. Steve and Sheila quickly admit they are not lone rangers influencing kids for Christ. Their community supports Christian activities. Over 100 elementary kids, approximately 50% of the school’s population, attend a multi-churchsponsored meeting weekly. Jesus and Me (JAM) teaches children about Jesus, in a mode similar to VBS, all school-year. Older youth are also impacted for Christ. Unless it communicates special preference, School Superintendent Brad Yates (Corban ’72-’74) encourages Young Life. Club Night itself flexes around the kids’ sport

and event schedules each week. And, 80 local donors keep the North Santiam Chapter of Young Life going strong. What inspires many is the couple’s ability to balance family and ministry. Matt Lucas, Corban’s Provost, stated, “The beauty of their lives is that they’ve figured out how to integrate their kids lives into theirs.” Steve readily confesses how challenging it is, but he also believes outreach is indispensable for his boys’ spiritual and social development. When the boys participate in older-youth events or see their parents respond to a crisis, they witness interpersonal relationships— which is what Christ is all about. Steve relayed, “They may not know all the personal details—but they understand that it’s serving people.” So, this servant-hearted couple intentionally welcomes the neighborhood into their home and into their lives. Sheila shared, “God continues to bring people who maybe need something.” And the Nielsens feel blessed to respond in a roll-up-yoursleeves kind of way. “Our house is lived in, there’s a lot of love here, and the kids know it.” C

Steve, Sheila and their children gather in the Nielsen living room.

MBA Program is a great fit for busy alum

Amy Ramos ‘06 continues working at her office in Bandon, OR, while she completes her degree online.

W

ith a grateful mind and heart, Amy Ramos (’06) returned to Corban last January to pursue a Masters in Business Administration with an emphasis in management. Since Amy works in Bandon, OR, as a Human Resources Director for Hardin Optical Company, her “return” is actually online. She joins other students in this faith-building adventure, training to become more efficient and effective business leaders who are Christians. Through the program Amy gains an economically-smart, godly perspective of business management, encouragement as she pursues a Christ-like impact on business relationships, and satisfaction as she meets a life-guiding goal: be a continual learner. Ramos chose Corban’s MBA program because it enabled her to remain in her current roles and was affordable. Besides saving fuel costs, the convenience of online 10

coursework lets Amy apply her new skills directly to the marketplace. With a better understanding of her job, she becomes a better steward of company resources. Time saved not traveling to and from campus prioritizes Amy’s personal interests as well. Her roles as daughter, sister, niece, cousin, assistant high school soccer coach, and Chihuahua owner are precious to her. And, compared to other schools Ramos considered, Corban offers a challenging, comprehensive program in a less-consuming tuition package. The tuition assistance program at Hardin reimburses Amy for the tax-allowable amounts she invests in her education; and, combined with her own financing, those dollars go farther at Corban. Amy’s faith has been strengthened through her online interaction with her MBA classmates. Ramos is one of the youngest in the program (average age is 38). However,

she has been with Hardin for 14 years, and she’s learned the business from the bottom up. Amy appreciates that fellow classmates bring their own unique training and experiences to the table. It’s opened her eyes to new concepts for integrating biblical principles into the work environment, particularly in difficult, similar situations as her own. Together the classmates powerfully support each other. She’s reassured, “Stick to what you believe, even if it means making a hard decision.” The College purposefully integrates teamwork while promoting the growth of the individual. The immediate responses from her teachers impress Amy. “Professors care about you. They tell you the tough things. They can be hard on you, but they do it so you can grow.” She loves this kind of learning environment. She emphasized, “The program is very challenging, but challenging in such a way that you know you’ve had the best education.” Amy Ramos is one satisfied customer with Corban’s MBA program. Asked what she might say to a prospective student, she recommends it highly: “The MBA program is a remarkable opportunity to achieve your educational goals, develop a strong network of business colleagues, advance your career goals with a Christ-centered mindset, and do it all from anywhere in the world, online, in an affordable and flexible manner.”

Corban’s M.Ed. program offers personalized attention

T

he personal admissions counseling, small class sizes, and individualized advising were just a few reasons that Kim Baggett of Salem decided to enroll in Corban’s M.Ed. in 2005. “Over the last several years, I have often checked into education programs trying to determine if there was a way that I could take the methods classes I was missing without having to Kim Baggett ‘06 earn an additional degree. My first choice was always Corban; I love the campus, the atmosphere, the staff, and the students,” she said. As the main financial contributor of her family, Baggett needed flexibility in earning her post-baccalaureate initial teaching licensure, which is something Corban offers. Corban believes in designing programs to meet individual needs. This process allows our graduate students the opportunity to be thoughtful about what they want to explore and go deeper in their specific area of study. Dr. Matt Lucas, provost, says, “One of the key aspects of that is to make sure that the faculty is available for individualized advising.” Graduate Studies in Education students

are taught to develop and improve their skills in the areas of curriculum, research, leadership, and pedagogy. They also learn to articulate a Christian perspective of education and translate that perspective into practice within the classroom, school, and community. “The instructors are committed to helping students learn and grow in all areas of their lives; it is not just a ‘job’ for them. [They] are well qualified to teach in their areas—open to new ideas, new ways to present the material, new challenges, and new students,” Baggett said. Baggett reports that Lucas spent quality time with her not only discussing and exploring different strategies for accomplishing the program, but also her financial situation. “He explained the program could be started in any term and then continued through until finished. That was delightful information,” Baggett said. “I realized I could pick up where I left off if I had to miss a semester or couldn’t take the full load. I jumped in with both feet; I was excited and ready to learn.” Lucas wasn’t the only faculty member that had an impact on her life. Each one challenged her intellectually while guiding her through the program—especially Dr. Bunch and his love for books and Dr. Claudia Green reminding her that learning can be fun.

“Each professor works hard to model learning, teaching and growing in a relationship with Christ. I feel that God gave me these individuals to help me see the areas in my life that reflected Him, that were blessed and that needed review,” said Holly Cozby, former graduate admissions counselor. Baggett has appreciated the enthusiasm of each professor and of the Education Program staff, from the beginning stages of the admissions process through completing the program in May of 2006. She currently works full-time as a thirdgrade teacher at Liberty Elementary School in Salem. “For Christians who desire to become teachers or further their educational coursework, there is no better school than Corban. There are other schools with a Christian basis that provide educational coursework, but there is not another school that requires and encourages a growing loverelationship with Jesus Christ,” Baggett said.

Alum Diane Moore’s work promotes healthy families

D

iane Moore (’00 ADP, B.S., Psychology) is a mother, problemsolver, author, and motivational speaker. Through her growing ministry to parents, Healthy Families International, she pointedly—yet with a sense of humor— educates parents. In all seriousness Diane contends, “We believe parents are the most powerful people on the planet. Period.” On October 11th Diane will lead a halfday morning seminar, “Parenting with Truth and Grace,” at Corban’s Psalm Performing Arts Center. Diane will share expertise in parenting all ages of kids. Diane assures conference attendees, “You will come away with an understanding about what needs to be done to help your child become a good decision-maker.” Diane’s ministry developed out of her 12

Corban studies. “Her book, Parenting the Heart of Your Child, is an extension of the program’s “Senior Capstone”—an independent study project,” says Dean of Adult Degree Programs Nancy Parenting the Heart of Martyn. The exposure Your Child to all voices of psychology and evaluating each from a Christian perspective gave Diane a solid professional foundation. She acknowledged, “My professors gave me just enough help and encouragement—but not too much to avoid my own thinking.” She even noted coursework outside her passions as genuinely

applicable and life enriching. “Everything is useable at Corban!” Diane chose Corban’s Family Studies track while involved in church ministry. She very-much valued coming to college later in life because she had already encountered typical problems in families. It allowed a greater connection with the course material. In addition, she appreciated her professors’ life-experiences which proved their credibility. An education with a measure of maturity and higher-levels of thinking was extremely important to Diane. What makes Healthy Families International so effective is Diane’s communication style. First and foremost, she centers her work on two treasured passages of Scripture: “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32), and “All things work together for good” (Romans 8:28). An impossible task without God’s truth and grace, parenting with it makes building godly character in children possible. Unlike classic approaches to counseling where the therapist “drives the car,” so to speak, Diane tells clients, “You’re driving the car. I’ll get in and look at the map—and together we’ll figure out where to go.” For example, Moore teaches many parents to help their teen emotionally regulate. Skills come from understanding the inner workings of DRA, the No. 1 diagnosis of today’s teens. “You know what DRA stands for, don’t you?...Dirty Rotten Attitude.” Diane shares practical information in an entertaining, accessible manner. “I’m a certified family life educator.” Her seminars are so funny and useable—the time goes fast! For more information on her upcoming seminar and/or to see how her ministry is expanding, visit Corban’s website at www.corban.edu/parentingseminar or www.healthyfamiliesintl.org.

ALUMNI ACTION

ALUMNI action Greetings, Alumni Spring has flown by and we’re well into summer. It’s somewhat quieter around campus than when 950 students are in chapel, or moving from class to class, or eating in the dining hall. However, this doesn’t mean it’s unexciting or that things aren’t happening with alumni. The following pages highlight the Young Alumni event, alumni dinners in Portland and Richland, Washington, 41st Corban Connection, our first-time Decade of the 50s reunion (in conjunction with commencement) Alumni Director Deleen Wills meets with three Golden and much more. Grads. See story on page 24. The alumni family grew by 202 as our seniors graduated on May 3. They now join you in the ranks of alumni and are prepared for jobs in ministry, teaching, and business—some are going abroad, into the military and a myriad of other worthy fields to make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ (see page 5 for a list of graduates). Whether you attended one semester or four years, at Western Baptist Bible College, Western Baptist or Corban, our alumni are part of a community that shares many of the same experiences and values. Please be a part of the excitement and stay active in our college community by attending music, drama, special presentations, sporting events, reunions and regional events when they happen. Don’t hesitate to contact your alumni office anytime. We are here for you! Call 503-589-8182 or e-mail dwills@corban.edu.

Director of Alumni Services, Deleen Wills presented each graduate with congratulations and parting gifts and explained their opportunities and responsibilities as new alumni. ASB president Mandy Peterson, James Kilcup and Ashley Hayes Swank show off their new Corban Alumni license plate frame.

Corban Connection

Got yearbooks?

Picture this—225 ladies gathering to support college students—it doesn’t get much better than that. The 41st Corban Connection met April 12 to visit, eat, and hear student testimonies and music. After an auction featuring Extended Markwood/Howden family. a beautiful handmade quilt that sold for $1,600, ladies gave $12,000 to kick off the 2008/2009 projects. Adopted projects are: risers for the Music Department; installing a new staircase from Deer Park Drive to the Psalm Performing Arts Center; and funding five student scholarships. We are well on our way to our $25,000 goal. If you would like to help reach this goal by April 1, 2009, please send your donation to: Corban Connection 5000 Deer Park Drive SE Salem, OR 97317 If you have any questions, contact Deleen at 503-589-8182 or e-mail Cathy Emitte Farwell ‘80, Susan Cox Canfield dwills@corban.edu. ’77, & Debbie Emitte Hardinger ‘81.

The Alumni Advantage

2008 Brings visitors from near and far to campus

Are you aware of the benefits provided by Corban for its alumni?

Winter, spring and summer brought many alumni and families to campus. Each received a 2008 Corban calendar from the Alumni Office. Early in the year Karen Mayer Curtis ’95, Oregon City; Jorge Real ’05, Salem; Surang Sirirasamiwangsa Ektrakul ‘79 and Peter Ektrakul of Nonthaburi, Thailand; Steven Serell ’06, Richland, Washington came by. In the spring, Sarah Trahern Sheets ’04 and Nathan Sheets ’04, Salem; Laura Radcliffe Wills ’02 along with daughter Anika, Reno, Nevada; Margie Van Beek Cunningham ’71, Rohnert Park, California; Ryan Braaten ’93 and Jennifer Holdaway Braaten ’94, brought children Marshalland Brooklyn from Washougal, Washington; Ron Ektrakul Graham ’76 & Janelle Houser Graham ‘75, Visalia, California; Kristi Kenyon Ziemer ’92 and family from Romania; Raymond Brasher ’66 and wife Darlene of Tracy, California; Katie Fraser ’99, Lake Oswego, Oregon; Janice Bradshaw Mantell ’85, Lebanon, Oregon; Terri Chapman ’82, Salem; Mark Leamy ’98, Las Vegas; Guy Dees ’90, brought his daughter for a tour while visiting from San Diego; Judeen Struiksma Brasher Edwards ’66(n) and sister from Tacoma, Washington; Tim Glaze ’71(n), McArthur, California.

We want you to know about and utilize the valuable benefits that you can access as Corban alumni. No longer live in Salem? No problem! Your Corban connection has no geographic boundaries. Check out the following list of benefits and take advantage of all that your alma mater has to offer, no matter your location. • Corban magazine is sent quarterly to alumni: This free publication keeps alumni up to date on college happenings and provides scholarly and thought-provoking articles. • Career assistance from the Career & Academic Services Center: List or find a job. • Technology Center: Use of computers in the lab located on the ground floor of the Academic Center. • Corban Facilities: If you need summer accommodations, a room for a business meeting or facilities for a wedding or reception, Campus Care can help. Corban alumni are entitled to use the college’s facilities at a reasonable rate, subject to availability. • E-directory: Your link to other alumni. • College Bookstore: Discounts on most items. • Performing Arts Events: Event invitations for alumni. • Use of our Library: Facilities include access to print and media materials plus computer workstations for researching electronic resources and study rooms. Stop by the desk on your first visit for your free library i.d. card.

Graduates of Corban, did you know your child can receive an automatic grant as a legacy child? Landon Knox

That’s right, automatic. No state schools can offer this, nor do most private colleges. Contact our Financial Aid Office at 503-375-7006 for more information.

First visitors to the new Alumni House at the end of June were: Jim Starr ’79(n), Kent, Washington, brought his son Gordon by on their way from Washington to California. Pictured here: Steve Parker ’71 and Kathy Friesen Parker ’72 of Glendale, Arizona, David Hickerson ’83 & Barbara Fryberger Hickerson ‘83(n) of Albany, celebrated part of their 27th wedding anniversary on campus reliving where they had met in Dr. Rich Meyers’ class. Randy Williams ’79 of Medford was here for the week because of children attending Corban’s Music Camp.

All-Alumni Homecoming

The new Alumni House

Rediscover your alma mater and reconnect with friends at the 2008 All-Alumni Homecoming. This two-day event will honor Corban’s past and celebrate its future. Portland alumni gather with friends Portland area alumni spent an Sunday afternoon visiting together and hearing an update on the College from President Hoff at the lovely home of Adrian Petrisor ’86 and wife Monika, on January 27. Dr. Bruce Fong ’73, president of Michigan Theological Seminary was visiting so what better reason to have a gathering?

Desiree’ Preskitt Bronleewe ’01 of Bend, Oregon writes: “I find myself often proud to be an alum of Corban College (it was WBC at the time). When I taught high school, I brought several students to visit and was always so excited by their response. The students and staff are always friendly and inviting not to mention spiritually encouraging. That said, I have never been more proud than I was a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to write and tell you my little story.

Christmas Soiree It’s not too early to mark your calendar to join other alumni at our third annual Christmas Soiree on Saturday evening, December 5. Kick off your holiday season with refreshments at 6 p.m. in the lobby of Schimmel Hall, followed by an evening of beautiful Christmas music presented by our music department. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Alumni will receive an invitation in the mail to the Christmas Soiree sponsored by President and Mrs. Hoff. Even though there is no admission fee for this event, due to limited space, a reservation is required. Please contact Deleen Wills in the Alumni Office to reserve your space. Call 503-589-8182 or e-mail dwills@corban.edu.

How do you support your college?

The tradition continues as the Corban music department travels to Central Oregon to share in a special service at Sisters Community Church with worship music provided by the entire department, Sunday, September 21 at 9 a.m. Choir, band, ensembles and strings will lead the worship music. The church is located at 15220 McKenzie Highway. Questions? Call 503-589-8182 or e-mail dwills@corban.edu.

My church had the privilege of hosting the Matsiko Children’s Choir from Uganda. Due to several things, my husband and I didn’t think we would be able to host any of the kids… God had other plans. At the VERY last minute they needed another family to host 2 of the boys. We were the only family available. It was such a blessing. One evening I was sitting and talking to the boys (one was 14, the other was 17). We got to talking about the colleges here. I found myself bragging as I normally do about MY college. I hadn’t mentioned the name of the college though. At one point, I saw a flash of recognition pass over their eyes and they sort of interrupted me to ask what the name of my college was. As soon as I said Corban College, they both got quite excited. They said they had many friends there. They began to tell me how they stayed there and how it was so great. They mentioned how well they were treated and accepted, what a good time they had and even how great the cafeteria was. David ‘02, my husband, came home about that point and we all shared. It was fun to have something else in common. It was so great that MY college had given these boys (and the rest of the choir) such a warm welcome and friendship. It meant so much to them. Thank you for continuing to be a college we can be proud of.”

HONORED ALUMNI

Decade of the 50s Golden Grads

A

new tradition began Saturday, May 3 in honoring Western Baptist Bible College 50-year graduates, affectionately called Golden Grads. All graduates of the Decade of the 50s were invited for a reunion that was to follow the 62nd commencement ceremony. Of the 21 graduates in Class of 1958, there are 12 remaining and five were able to attend. Golden Grads sat in a place of honor in the front row at commencement, and President Hoff recognized each graduate of the Class of 1958 by name and hometown. Because several other 50s alumni were in attendance for the reunion, after the Class of 1958 was introduced, President Hoff honored and recognized the other Golden Grads also. Each was bestowed a double-sided bronze medallion by Dr. Richard Caulkins, who was a faculty member at WBBC. The medallion shows the Western Baptist Bible College seal one one side and the seal of Corban College and Graduate School on the reverse side. After the ceremonies, Golden Grads and their families joined President and Mrs. Hoff in the mezzanine of the Psalm Performing Arts Center for a hosted luncheon and an afternoon to get reacquainted. The time was spent looking at old photos and reminiscing while viewing past yearbooks. Golden Grads who could not attend received their 50-year medallion in the mail.

The Benefits of Planned Giving

J

esus addressed a large crowd and said: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.,” Luke 6:38. We at Corban College are grateful for those that have supported our students, our mission and have helped us to grow. And we are confident that just as Jesus promised, it has been given back to you abundantly in many ways. Recently, with the passing of a long time supporter of our mission we were notified of an estate gift to Corban College. This was a family with a well thought out Estate Plan designed to minimize taxes and to appropriately care for their children and to further

the work of their favorite Christian ministries. This family will be honored at Corban as members of the Legacy Society. Is your estate plan up to date? Perhaps you are having a difficult time deciding how to leave your assets or you may have an aversion to thinking about your mortality. For assistance with your will or living trust please don’t put off this task any longer. Please call, write, or e-mail us and request our free booklet on Planned Giving Options. We would appreciate the opportunity to partner with you in investing in the lives of Christian students who will make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ.

For more information about Corban’s planned giving options, please call Chris Erickson at 1-800-845-3005 or e-mail cerickson@corban.edu. You may also visit our web site at www.corban.edu and click on “Giving to Corban.” Corban College & Graduate School is a non profit, 501(c)(3), tax exempt educational corporation. We offer several other planned giving vehicles such as a: 1) Charitable Gift Annuity, 2) Charitable Lead Trust, 3) Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust, and 4) Charitable Remainder Trust. Gifts of real property or life insurance are another way to support the mission of the College.
