From the Wellness Center: Bouncing Blueberries By Selma Williams, Gila Community College Wellness Center Coordinator YAY! The monsoons have arrived; the rain has been wonderful and needed. With the cooler weather here for a couple of days, it has me wanting pie. Pie is usually not considered a healthy choice for a snack. However, I found a blueberry pie recipe that cuts the calories by three quarters. With that in mind, I am writing about blueberries this week. Blueberries are native to North America; however, blueberries are found worldwide. They are related to the cranberry and bilberry. There are two types of bushes -- the low bush and the high bush. The high bush is what you are more likely to see in the wild. The low bush is grown mostly for commercial use. Ninety percent of the blueberries eaten worldwide are produced in Maine. Blueberries

are able to be shipped worldwide within two days of being picked because of “cold freight” shipping. So, on top of being awesome for our bodies, they are fresh when we get them at the markets. Blueberries are packed with nutritional power. The anthocyanins they contain (the pigments that make them blue) are powerful antioxidants. While wine, particularly red wine, is touted as cardio-protective since it is a good source of antioxidants; a recent study found that blueberries deliver 38 percent more of these free radical fighters than wine. What’s more, blueberries may help us age gracefully. One cup of blueberries has over 18mg of vitamin C, 1.4 mg of vitamin E, and fiber of almost 4 grams. The recipe I found is from Hungry-Girl.com.
