Arthur ‘Jap’ Ramirez

June 23, 1958 - Sept. 22, 2013 Arthur James “Jap” Ramirez, 55, passed away on Sept. 22, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Phoenix, AZ surrounded by his family and friends.

“Jap” is survived by his wife of 33 years, Yolanda Ramirez; daughter, Christine (Ben Duarte); son, Michael Ray; parents, Ray and Evelyn Ramirez; brother, Ray Ramirez (Molly); and grandchildren, Amelia, Gabriel, Jacob, Adam, Lessenia, Mya, Abby, Benjamin and Kevin. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was loved by family and friends dearly and will always be remembered for his volunteer work with Golf Tournaments, The Superior Little League and Superior High School Baseball. He loved his time coaching! He was also a member or the “Red Bear Outfitters” and loved to hunt, fish and golf.

One killed, one injured in hit and run accident; information sought on identity of car driver, passenger Winkelman, AZ – The Pinal County Attorney’s Office and Arizona Department of Public Safety are asking for help from the public in identifying two young males who walked away from a fatal collision on Highway 77 between

Mammoth and Winkelman on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013.

According to a spokesperson for the County Attorney’s Office, the collision occurred at 8:30 a.m. A Dodge Intrepid and a Harley Davidson motorcycle collided approximately 10 miles

south of Winkelman. The collision resulted in the death of a woman believed to be in her 50s/60s. A male, also in his 50s/60s, sustained severe life threatening injuries.

New Postmasters sworn in at Hayden-Winkelman, Kearny

Kenneth Ohman, Post Office Manager, Arizona District, traveled to the

Copper Basin last Friday to swear in two Postmasters.

First stop was at the

Winkelman Post Office where Tamar Clemans was sworn in. Clemans started her career as a letter carrier in Chandler and worked in various post offices in the Valley and most recently in Florence before coming to Winkelman.

Next stop was at the Kearny Post Office where

Edward Taggard took his oath. Taggard also started his career as a letter carrier and lived in New York state at the time. He later moved to Arizona and worked various post offices in the Valley.

Many Postmasters from around the state attended both ceremonies.

By Mila Besich Lira Copper Area News The US Army Corps of Engineers began the public participation process for the development of the ASARCO tailings expansion. ASARCO has identified state trust land in the Ripsey Wash area as the future tailings pond. The process to

begin selecting and permitting tailings sites for ASARCO has begun, in anticipation for the closure of the Elder Gulch tailings site. ASARCO officials explained that the Elder Gulch tailings pond has six to ten years left, before they exceed the height limits.

Ripsey Wash was chosen as the site due to its proximity to the Ray pit mine, the hydrology and geology of the area. Continued from Page 4 Economic Development Council, ASARCO, the proposed Apache Sky Casino and the Towns of Winkelman and Kearny to participate in the planning process. The update to the general plan is required by the State of Arizona; the plan will help the town to plan for future development and set development goals for the community.

The council also approved town staff to purchase a backhoe in the amount of $98,610, and authorized the Town Manager to sign a contract with the lowest responsible bidder to replace the town hall roof. The council also approved a resolution to endorse the Gila County half cent sales tax for transportation ballot initiative.

Mayor Charles “Chale” Vega introduced the proposed Code of Ethics for the Town of Hayden. The Code will create a policy for the Town of Hayden, Staff Council and Advisory Board Members to uphold, promote and demand the highest standards of ethics from all of its officials.

Approval of the Code of Ethics was tabled.

The Corps expect to have a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

by September of 2014 and

by October of 2015 they expect to have a decision statement.

The studies and public participation facilitated by the Army Corps of Engineers will determine if the site can be permitted for tailings. Their permitting process will address all direct, indirect and cumulative impacts to

St. Joseph’s History: A new church

By Vicki Clark As I was gathering information for this piece I talked with Msg. Raul Trevizo, who was raised in Hayden.

He described the history of St. Joseph’s Parish as a trinity…

The Founding, The New Church and The Remodeling.

The three were equally important to help build and blend the parish into what it is today. This is the second and third installments of the trinity.

The New Church A few years after Fr.

Machain came to the parish, it was decided that a new church should be built. The existing St. Joseph had served the Catholic faithful for more than 40 years, but the cost of maintaining and repairing the old building was climbing each year.

A site was selected and construction began. The new church would sit high on a hill on Mountain View just off Hwy 177 overlooking the Gila Valley below. The original plans called for a modern fan shaped building with a

basement that would house a parish hall and kitchen. But those plans were changed much to the surprise of the parishioners who were hard at work raising funds for the building.

After the top of hill was leveled and the basement was dug out, orders came from the Diocesan Office of Property and Planning to fill the hole back in and the plans were being changed. It wasn’t known at the time why, but later it was discovered that the changes were thanks

to a certain person in that office who was embezzling funds. He skimmed off the differences in the original costs and pocketed the money.

Two other parishes in the Diocese also fell victim to this scheme. The person was eventually caught and served time, but unfortunately not before the buildings were well on the way to completion.

The first Mass at the new St. Joseph was held in December of 1974 and the church was officially dedicated on Mar. 16, 1975

Lady Bearcats win all three matches

By Andrew Luberda Copper Basin News The Bearcats’ volleyball team won three consecutive matches last week when they defeated Gilbert Classical

Academy, Cibecue and Superior. The Bearcats’ season record now stands at 11 – 6 – 1.

The Bearcats participated in a tournament where they

played eight games over the weekend. They finished the tournament with a record of 2 – 5 – 1. They defeated Tombstone and Bisbee while their losses were against

Pima, St. David, Safford, Thatcher and San Carlos.

They tied Morenci.

The Bearcats return to action Oct. 3, 2013, at Hayden. Game time is 5 p.m.

with the most Rev. Bishop Francis Green officiating.

Fr. Machain wanted to give everyone before some time to get acquainted with the new building to see how things worked before the dedication.

Finishing work still had to be done on the structure and landscaping and road improvements were needed.

Fr. Machain praised the new church’s versatility, saying that a soundproof screen could be used to divide the main room into a parish hall and a worship area. The altar, pulpit and lectern were in the middle of the room.

Other features included a prayer room, offices, a confessional, storerooms, a kitchen and a dining area. In

addition, Fr. hoped to have a new rectory built. The parish had raised $175,000 of the church’s costs and was built by the Matt Lang Construction Co. of Tucson. It was designed by architect Jim Smith, also of Tucson.

Worship services at the old St. Joseph’s ended with the opening of the new church but the facilities were still used for church functions and as a youth ministry center for awhile.

In the meantime, plans were being made for the fate of the Our Lady of Guadalupe.

It was to be demolished but not forgotten. The mission became a pile of rubble and the old church in Hayden was abandoned but the heart of the

Fr. Bryan Sherry, who came to Hayden in 1976, said at the time he didn’t think the people would mind as long as the cherished symbols were moved.

The life sized statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe which was

located above the main altar was installed in the sanctuary of the new church and the life size crucifix of Christ from the Hayden church was placed opposite the statue. Also moved were the bells from both buildings and they still ring out to call worshipers

from high on the hill.

By moving the bells and the statues to the new church “the past is included in present tradition.”

Before Fr. Sherry arrived at St. Joseph’s Fr. Joseph Bartos served the parish for a short time. Fr. Ed Carscallen followed Fr. Sherry and other priests were between October of 1983 and June of 2001 included Fr. Leopold Gleissner, Fr. Kevin Clinch (who served for 12 years), and Fr. Larry Kasper.

The Remodeling Soon after Fr. Dale Branson arrived at St. Joseph’s in July of 2001, he began formulating plans to update the church to make it more usable and comfortable. His enthusiasm

got the people excited and many projects were completed during his 10 year stay at the parish.

The folding doors behind the back altar were replaced with a solid wall and a door opening. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel was created, the rails to the altar were constructed and the interior of the church was painted with murals by local artist Wanda Mitchell-Tucker.

New lighting was installed to highlight the statues and artwork. Stained glass windows replaced the old windows and new doors were also installed.

The most enthusiasm came when new padded pews replaced the old folding chairs

and a steeple went up on the roof of the building.

As one parishioner said, “He turned a funeral home into a church,” and another said, “Now it’s a Church.

Fr. Robert Rodriquez came to the parish in November of 2011 and did a little remodeling of his own by expanding the office areas and adding more space to the religious gift shop.

Fr. Robert left in June of 2013 and the parish is now ministered to by Fr. Matthew Thayil, a missionary from India. So it has gone full circle in the last 100 years, a parish founded by a missionary is now again served by a missionary.

Many sacraments have

been given and received at St. Joseph’s many buildings over the years, some of these buildings are gone, but the spirit of the people remain strong in their belief in their parish. As Fr. Thayil says, “It’s not the church building that makes the parish, it’s the people.”

Font, OCD, who did the research and put together the booklet called Carmelites Among the Miners where the majority of my information came from.

Lobos lose Homecoming Game to tough Panthers

By Nolberto Waddell Copper Basin News Since going to eight man football, the Superior Panther teams have had their way against the Hayden Lobos and Friday’s homecoming game continued that trend.

The Lobos won the opening coin toss, lined up to receive, only to lose the football on an onside kick at the Hayden 45 yard line. On the next play, after showing a run and sucking in the Lobo defense, the runner stopped and threw a 20 yard pass to a lone receiver left uncovered taking the football over the goal line with nobody near him. The two point run was good giving the Panthers a 0 to 8 lead before a stunned Lobo crowd at 11:48 of the first quarter. Another onside kick, this time covered by the Lobos, and no offense by the Lobos gave the ball back to the Panthers. Another blown pass coverage resulted in another long touchdown pass of 46 yards to give Superior a 0 to 14 score at 8:23 of the period. With Superior focusing on every Aaron Lagunas move, Ezekiel Bolaterz was called on and he responded taking the Lobos for a touchdown at 5:22 of the period to cut the Superior lead to 6 to 14. It would be a close as the Lobos would get to Superior on the scoreboard.

The Panthers scored once more to take a 6 to 20 lead after a quarter of play.

The onslaught was on! A 61 yard pass, a 5 yard pass and a 6 yard pass by the Panther offense combined by a Lobo offense that could not get untracked led to a huge Panther lead at the halftime break 6 to 42.

competition, the Superior attack continued assisted in part by poor tackling of the Lobo defense. The Lobos kick off, drove to the 47 yard line and from their ran it in, assisted by the weak tackling, for the touchdown and now a running clock with the 6 to 50 score at

11:06 of the third quarter.

The Lobos did not give up.

Lagunas took the ensuing kickoff at the 15 yard line for an apparent 85 yard touchdown return only to have in nullified on an illegal hit penalty. With the football at the 42 yard line, Boltarez took the handoff

and bulled his way for a 58 yard touchdown. Jacob Manriquez scored the two points to cut the lead to 14 to 50 at 8:25 of the third and fighting the running clock. Hayden tried an onside kick; Superior recovered and with good field position soon scored

again on a 8 yard pass for the final 14 to 58 score as the officials kept the clock going through the fourth quarter.

The game was not a good showing by the Lobo team.

The Lobo defense gave up 478 total yards on 45 plays resulting in eight

Lady Lobo troubles continue, suffer six straight losses

By Nolberto Waddell Copper Basin News After winning their first three matches, the Lady Lobo volleyball team has been on a downward spin, suffering six straight losses.

The Lady Lobos made the trip to Ft. Thomas High School to take on the Lady Apaches only to return with a four set loss.

The Lobos must have been tired, suffering a 10 to 25 first set loss able to only score four service points.

The Lobos returned the favor in the second set holding the Apaches to only four service points winning the set 25 to 13.

The next two sets were hard fought and close with Lady Lobos dropping both with scores of 22 to 25 and 20 to 25 to suffer their fifth straight loss.

Up next for the Lady Lobos was a visit by a tall Lady Miner team from San Manuel High School.

The first set was close and exciting with the play at the next very good by both teams. The hard spiking by the Miners won out, taking the first set 23 to 25. The second set was

all Miners as the Miners’ fourth server went to the line and fit for 12 service points when the Lobos

could not get their spikes in the lines losing 11 to 25.

Bearcats top Apaches to extend win streak to five

By Richard Bravo Copper Basin News The Ray Bearcats extended their winning streak by beating the Ft. Thomas Apaches 62-14 last Friday night.

The Apaches started the night holding the Bearcats on their first offensive possession forcing them to turn the ball over on downs. Going with a no huddle offense the Apaches wasted no time taking the lead on the 4th ranked Bearcats as they drove 60 yards in just five plays as the Apache quarterback found his receiver wide open in the back of the endzone for the

first score of the game. The two point attempt failed giving the Apaches a 6-0 lead.

The lead did not last long for the Apaches as the Bearcats came right back on their next possession to take the lead on the first of two rushing touchdowns on the night for quarterback Destry Yocum.

That would be the first of 50 unanswered points in the first half by the Bearcats. Yocum connected on touchdown passes of 18, 19, and 54 yards to wide receiver Dominic Bravo who raised his touchdown total for the year to 15. The defense also contributed to the

scoring in the first half as Yocum and Joe Rudy Lorona ran two out of the five first half interceptions by the Apache quarterback in for touchdowns giving the Bearcats a 50-6 lead going into the half.

With the Bearcats up by 44 points to start the second half the clock ran continuous until the Apaches scored their second touchdown of the game on a 30 yard pass with 10:13 left in the third quarter. The two point conversion attempt was successful slightly cutting into the Bearcat lead.

The Bearcats added one more score in the third quarter on

a 2 yard touchdown run by running back Robin Newman to put the Bearcats up 56-14 heading into the final quarter of play.

As the clock continued to run turnovers by both teams kept the fourth quarter scoreless until the final seconds of the game when Austin Huffman took a Lorona handoff and scrambled 70 yards for the score as time expired giving the Bearcats a 62-14 victory.

The Bearcats offensively compiled over 400 yards of total offense. On the passing end of the game Yocum completed 15-24 passes for 189

yards and 2 TD the Bearcat quarterback also ran for 67 yards on 6 carries and 2 TD. Newman rushed for 31 yards on 5 carries and 1 TD and caught 4 passes for 22 yards.

Leading the receiving core was Bravo who had 8 catches for 145 yards and 3 TD. Seth Harmon had 3 catches for 22 yards.

Defensively the Bearcats dominated the Apaches holding them to under 150 yards of total offense and forcing 7 turnovers (1 fumble, 6 Interceptions). Leading tacklers for the Bearcats were Bravo and Yocum with 6 tackles each

both also had interceptions Bravo (2) Yocum (1). Ryan Bickley and Julio Noriega each had 5 tackles and 1 sack each. Jacob Pace with 4 tackles. Newman, Huffman, Lorona, and Harmon each had 2 tackles. Harmon (2) and Lorona (1) also had interceptions.

With the victory the Bearcats improved to (5-0) on the year setting up a showdown with undefeated Pima (5-0) this Friday at Dave Mcfee Memorial Stadium. This should be an intense and exciting game so please come out and show your support.

SAYF Miners take to the field in Tucson, post wins, losses The SAYF Miners began play on Sept. 14 in Marana. The Mighty Mites posted a win 21-15 with the Juniors and Midgets posting losses, both 0-14.

The following Saturday the teams were at Santa Rita High School and all three posted wins: 18-12 for the Mighty Mites, 2613 for the Juniors and 14-0

for the Midgets.

The teams were back in Marana on Sept. 28.

The Mighty Mites remain undefeated with another win, 7-0. The Juniors

had a bye this week. The Midgets posted another win, 7-0.

The next game will be at Santa Rita High School again.

The local boys participated in the Ray High School Homecoming Parade and will also be in the San Manuel High School Homecoming

Parade on Friday. Also, members of the teams and their families were given 50 free tickets to attend an Arizona Cardinals game on Oct. 12.

Halloween is Oct. 31 and the night for trick or treating. Winter Wonderland and the Electric Light Parade are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6. The Chamber Annual Meeting and Citizen of the Year awards will be held on Feb. 24.

The Women’s Expo will be March 8 and the Pioneer Days are scheduled for March 20 through March 23.
