Nestled amidst the mountainous foothills of southwestern Montana, Cooper Hereford Ranch has been a source for Line One genetics for over 70 years. The Cooper program was built upon the belief that by maintaining a strong performance line breeding program we could improve the gaining ability and feeding efficiency of our cattle and in turn provide cattlemen with bulls that produce uniform offspring with consistent gains and good performance.
Dear Cattlemen, We hope that in lean years, such as the one we are currently experiencing, you find confidence in purchasing your breeding stock from a program that has withstood the test of time and remained steadfast in following a very specific breeding program for over 70 years. Whether you’re in the commercial or registered cattle business, we know the key to your success is in producing a live calf at birth and in retaining solid, good mothering females that can raise calves with big weaning weights. That’s why we continually cull our cow herd and select for good udders, moderate birth weights, and EPDs that yield consistent gains. This year we had approximately 100 yearling bulls on test in the feedlot. Gains and weights were some of our most consistent ever with few outliers on the top or bottom end of the spectrum. Visually, I believe you’ll find our bulls this year to be very consistent as well, both in type and size. And that consistency transfers to paper, as you’ll see that a majority of the sale animals rank in the top 20-30% or better in the Hereford breed for numerous traits. As you sift through the pages of this catalog you’ll find we provide you with a plethora of information on each animal. Our hope is to provide you with every available trait that can assist you in making a decision on your breeding stock. All cattle offered for sale have GE-EPD profiles and have been parentage verified and are guaranteed IE free. T e rms /C o n d i t i o n s All sales are cash unless arrangements are made with seller prior to the sale. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder with the auctioneer settling any disputes. The animal becomes the property of the purchaser as soon as sold. Any death or injury thereafter falls upon the buyer. All animals in the sale are guaranteed breeders. If an animal fails to breed after a trial of six months, it may be returned to the seller in good condition and in compliance with the health regulations of Montana. The seller reserves the right to try said animal for six months, and if it proves a breeder, to return it to the buyer at the buyer’s expense. If an adjustment is required, it will be made with a replacement animal of equal value or credit on the purchase of another animal. No adjustments will be made after (9) months of sale day. The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 15 traits and calculates four profit ($) indexes. Research is ongoing to develop traits for fertility, feed intake and docility. Today, DNA-marker tests can be used to enhance the accuracy of Hereford EPDs. AHA blends marker information with phenotypic information and pedigree to produce a GE-EPD. Look for the GE-EPD logo denoting an animal has been tested. Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G) - reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of daughters’ progeny weaning weight. A bull with a 29 lb. M&G EPD should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bull’s daughters with a M&G EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10 = 19 lb.). It is equal to onehalf the sire’s weaning weight EPD, plus all of his MM EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. It is sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.” (breed avg = 45)

The bulls in our sale represent the top 75% of our 2016 bull crop. The bulls were weaned on September 6th. The group as a whole posted an avg. BW of 89 lbs., and an actual WW 763 lbs. Once in the feedlot they were fed a mixture of chopped hay, alfalfa silage, whole corn, and a mineral based protein supplement. Performance numbers were right on target again this year and met our goal of gaining 3.5 lbs./day.

In recent years, Farm-to-Table dinners have taken root on farms and ranches across the globe. The movement offers diners the opportunity to engage with farmers and ranchers while dining on locally produced cuisine. Upon returning home to our ranch from Northern California, my sister Katie made it her mission to host one of these events at our Ranch. 2016 marked our 3rd season of doing so. This summer we were especially excited to collaborate with Claudia Mesa, a local chef who hails from Colombia and is known throughout Montana for her involvement with our state’s lentil farmers. Similar to previous years, Cooper Hereford Ranch donated beef which was paired with vegetables and grains produced locally. This year’s menu centered around Claudia’s Colombian roots and featured dishes such as beef empanadas, south of the border meatballs, and a scrumptious caribbean beef stew. It was another lovely evening dining al-fresco beneath the willow trees. Our neices, Sadie and Grace Schopp, along with our nephew, Tad, were brilliant servers. Tad was popping wine corks and pouring drinks like a pro. Guests thoroughly enjoyed their personalities and exceptional service. Our family is grateful for the opportunity to share our ranch and our passion with those interested in promoting and supporting agriculture in our state.

Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) This is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so they need to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have much more emphasis on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program.
Baldie Maternal Index (BMI$) BMI$ is a maternally focused index that has a production system based on 1,000-Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed toward Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®). There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW, which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature size manageable. The emphasis of IMF is greater than the emphasis of REA. This is true because of the price difference of the Choice-Select spread and the fact that there is very little incentive to produce cattle better than a Yield Grade 3. This index is geared to service any commercial program that has British cross cows.
