holiday hack Nothing says “special” more than a holiday table with beautiful linens, but few people want the chore of washing and ironing linens for a crowd. And it’s fun to change it up and have a different look every year. So we suggest renting them from Gala Cloths. Your linens arrive clean and pressed, and after dinner, they go into a laundry bag and you’re done. (Yes! You can just rent one or two tablecloths).

Owned by Dulany Noble, Gala Cloths is the premier specialty linen rental company in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Set your table with imagination... let their tablecloths inspire you! Find out more and reserve your linens. at GalaCloths.com.

RED

sangria

"Sangria is the jungle juice style of cocktail. You can pretty much do whatever you want with it as long as you have a red wine base. But the secret to amazing Sangria? Muddle your fruit with the brown sugar before adding it. Then the fruit is not just for show; you actually taste the flavor."

ITALIAN spritz

"What really makes this spritz special is the Capri Sour Mocktail Mix from Mocktail Mixers. They are a local, woman-owned company from D.C. and we just started working with them. You don't miss the alcohol if you drink them straight. But add it to Prosecco and it makes a great spritz."

feel your gratitude By Dori Chait Dori Chait is the Director of Guest Relationships for Hoopla Hospitality. She resides in Pikesville with her husband, two children and energetic labradoodle. #dogoodfeelgood

These 2021 holiday vibes feel extra good. They feel real. They feel hopeful. They feel meaningful. They feel important. I think we can all agree that family gatherings, holiday celebrations, wish lists, party outfits and “normal” festivities hold more weight this year. After over a year of being hesitant to gather and engage with loved ones, many of us plan to jump in with two feet this year. There is a sense of gratitude that fills the air differently.

“I can’t believe THIS is where I get to come to work everyday,” said Carter Arnot Polakoff, the new CEO and President of Port Discovery Children’s Museum, looking around in wonder at the museum’s lobby. Although she hates having her picture taken, she can’t hide the pure joy in her smile.

“I honestly didn’t think I would find a place as joyful to work as Baltimore School for The Arts,” said Carter. “And now I’m here. This place is magic.” Carter Arnot Polakoff

HOLIDAY HACK Problem: Some of us can’t imagine Christmas without our parents’ ornaments from the 30s and 40s, the ornaments that we made as kids, and ornaments that we’ve gotten as gifts. But the thought of hauling a 12’ feet tree up from the basement, and assembling it with all the lights and ornaments is becoming too much work to be enjoyable. And a lot of families go away the day after Christmas for a holiday break, so a tree and decorations aren’t very practical. Solution: Use your family and heirloom decorations in a different way. You don’t have to put up a tree to enjoy your family’s collection of holiday memories and heirlooms. Ornaments can be displayed throughout your home in creative ways: Fill large cylinders and apothecary jars with ornaments Display some very special ornaments in a shadow box. Fill a tiered display with ornaments for a “tree” look. Add some greens and you have a great centerpiece. Tuck some ornaments into the greens on your mantle. Wind a strand of tree lights through them to add light and holiday sparkle. Surround a door with greenery and garlands and hang ornaments in the garland.

IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

For 32 years, Kennedy Krieger Institute has created a whimsical holiday wonderland at the Maryland State Fairgrounds the weekend after Thanksgiving. Hundreds of trees, gingerbread houses, and wreaths magically appear to create one of the largest holiday extravaganzas on the East Coast. The items are then auctioned off to raise money to support the patients and work of Kennedy Krieger, which works to transform the lives of children, adolescents and adults with diseases, disorders and injuries impacting the nervous system. But for many families and volunteers that design and donate trees, the annual tradition is about more than twinkling lights and a joyful way to kick-off the holiday season. It’s about healing and giving back.

HOLIDAY HACK We asked expert home organizer, Ashley Ingraham, of Home Perspective, for advice on how to make next year easier. Ashley recommends purchasing plastic bins with lids to store all holiday decor. "The plastic bins protect your decorations from mice looking for a winter home, and from getting wet. If you pack and store decorations together by where they go in your home (Dining Room, Fireplace Mantle, etc.), you can pull bins out one at a time next year, decorate one room at a time and not be overwhelmed.” Ashley also suggests doing detailed labels for what you have in each bin – if you are looking for the wreath hook the day after Thanksgiving, you won’t have to go through a lot of bins to find it. Print labels for the front, side and top of bins – easier to see the contents however they are placed in storage. “And make sure to note where you hid the Elf on a Shelf,” says Ashley, laughing, “Note on your December 2022 calendar where it is so you won’t have to buy a new one.”

Baltimore moms Ashley Shaver, Devon Hynson, and Jessica Moog know the value of collaboration. The three are working together to make all area families find a place to call home. You might say they are the trifecta of mom-power.

holiday hack Do you really need to do all the cooking? The reality of a home-cooked Christmas or Hanukkah dinner: 3 hours shopping and unloading all the groceries + a day of food prep and setting the table + at least a whole day of cooking. Everyone comes to the table, enjoys a fine meal and 30-45 minutes later, it’s over, except for the hours of clean up. Some of us wouldn’t have it any other way, but some of us would love to find an easier way to prepare the meal and save more time for enjoying the day. If the holidays are really about spending quality time with those we love, why not take the time and the stress out of cooking all of it? You can order in just the sides, just the turkey, or the whole meal. Classic to Go www.classiccatering.com | 410.356.1666 The Classic to Go division of The Classic Catering People is the perfect solution for holiday meal prep. They offer everything from starters and hors d’oeuvres, to single side dishes, to incredible desserts. You can order a whole “Everything but the Turkey” meal, or a “Traditional Holiday” meal including the turkey. And, at $26/person for 10 people, it would be hard to shop for everything yourself and beat that price. Eddie's of Roland Park www.eddiesofrolandpark.com | 410-377-8040 Whether you want brisket and potato latkes for Hanukkah, or turkey and all the trimmings for Christmas, Eddie’s has you covered for heatand-serve holiday cooking. You can view their holiday catalog online and delivery is available, too! Your Favorite Restaurant During the months of Covid closures, most restaurants and clubs became skilled at preparing meals to go – either prepped and ready for you to cook, or fully cooked and ready to warm. If you have a favorite restaurant, call and ask them about cooking all or most of your holiday meal from their menu.
