Welcome to Southaven, the “Top of Mississippi.” This is the state’s third largest city — one of its fastest growing — where we value the great quality of life here in our hometown and make every effort toward continuing that growth and prosperity. The gateway to Mississippi, Southaven is located within a day’s drive of 50 percent of the U.S. population and within three hours driving distance from six different states. We are extremely proud to be a part of the finest school system in the state, the DeSoto County School District. Southaven is home to 11 of the district’s 42 schools, including two high schools, all of which are devoted to academic excellence while offering a variety of extracurricular programs. We are also proud of our many community parks, including the award-wining Snowden Grove Baseball Complex, with amenities previously only found at professional stadiums. Next door, the Snowden Grove Amphitheater, the Mid-South’s newest outdoor venue, has hosted performances by Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, to name a few. In 1998, at the peak of the dot-com boom, Fast Company magazine dubbed the Memphis region as “The Capital of the Real World” due to its central location and because so many of the goods being sold online move through the FedEx hub, local rail terminals, and 200-plus distribution centers. Here are three quick facts that really bring home how centrally Southaven is placed: A truck leaving Southaven is within an overnight drive of 75 percent of the nation’s population. A very special FedEx station is a couple of miles north of Southaven’s Main Street, where you can drop off an overnight package as late as 11:59 p.m. and it will still be delivered the next morning. This helps explain why Nike, Williams-Sonoma, and Apple distribute so much of their products from here. * To further illustrate Southaven’s strategic location, it is located on the centerline of the entire Western Hemisphere. Boot up Google Earth and check it for yourself! The 90th meridian — halfway between the International Date Line and the Greenwich
Prime Meridian — passes through the Thomas & Betts electronics factory here, and it misses the hostess stand in the new Boiling Point restaurant by a couple of feet! Many of the region’s distribution centers are located in Southaven, and with good reason. Mississippi has been ranked second among U.S. states for speed of permitting and competitive utility rates, third for competitive labor costs, fifth for the cost of doing business and high levels of entrepreneurial activity, and in the top ten for incentive programs. Since 2010, Fiskars, Kimberly-Clark, Siemens AG, and WPG Americas have followed many others and set up distribution and light-assembly facilities in Southaven. Neighboring Desoto County communities have also recently attracted facilities for Hamilton Beach Brands, Cardinal Health, McKesson Corp. and Milwaukee Electric Tool. FedEx facilities are only one part of the equation. Southaven is located close to five Class 1 railroads for intermodal logistics, the Port of Memphis for lowcost inland waterway transportation, a crossroads of coast-to-coast/Canadato-Mexico highways (I-55, I-40, I-69), moderately priced industrial space, and a host of trucking, intermodal, and third-party logistics companies that add value for Southaven’s economy.
HOMES F OR FAMI LI ES Southaven began as a single residential development, and it continues to offer a wide variety of options for every type of home buyer or real estate investor. You can find what you need from starter homes, luxury estates, and zerolot properties in a smart-community, to active retirement communities, a golf course neighborhood, and a good old three-bedroom apartment close to a great public school. Southaven still has plenty of open space for specialized residential needs. There are horse farms, or just raw land, both independent acreage and subdivision lots for building the perfect home. Many qualified homeowners here who are over 65 take advantage of the Homestead Exemption to eliminate county property taxes on the first $75,000 of home value.

AR T S AN D EN TE R TAIN M E N T Southaven residents enjoy a shorter drive to downtown Memphis’ entertainment and cultural amenities than do many Memphis residents — from concerts and NBA games, to professional baseball games and Broadway shows, to the Memphis Symphony. But Southaven supports a flourishing cultural and artistic community in its own right. We enjoy major concerts at the 10,000-seat Landers Center (from Bill Gaither to Cirque du Soliel to Stone Temple Pilots), as well as locally produced plays and musicals by Desoto Family Theatre. Southaven is also home to the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Mississippi RiverKings, who play at the Landers Center.

The Southaven Field of Dreams, located at Snowden Grove Park, is a mini baseball complex for handicapped and mentally challenged children and
adults, enabling them to play America’s pastime in a safe environment. Southaven is also proud to have Greenbrook Park, the award winning 8-diamond softball complex that is home to the Gulfsouth Conference Softball Championship and many annual collegiate events, as well as many local leagues (sign-up starts each January!). While baseball has been good to Southaven, we also enjoy the decidedly global sport of soccer, via our broadly

Southaven was officially incorporated on Tuesday, April 15, 1980 — that’s right, Tax Da Day. The town grew ffrom from a quiet crossroads of the 11852 Nesbit-toMemphis “plank Mem road” (now part road of U U.S. Highway 51) and Stateline Road, which Ro is now “Main SStreet” in town. Perched on P a low rise of land between the North Mississippi hill country and the th famously fertile Mississippi D Delta, the area u remained entirely rural until 1958, when a group of home bu builders, led by Holiday Inns founder Kemmons Wilson, developed the Southaven Community, a name adapted from “South Whitehaven,” after the large suburb just north of the Tennessee
line. By 1960, this new community’s population surpassed 1,000 and the growth has only accelerated from there. Had it already been incorporated in 1970, Southaven would have been Mississippi’s 27th largest city. By our founding date in 1980, our population rank had already jumped to 17th place, then 14th in 1990 and 8th in 2000. Today, with more than 50,000 citizens, Southaven is Mississippi’s third-largest city (behind Gulfport and Jackson) and the leading “edge city” to the threestate, million-resident Memphis MSA. While Southaven is a young town, it’s the site of one of the oldest milestones in American history. In the spring of 1541, while Michelangelo was still painting the interior of the Sistine Chapel, Hernando de Soto became the first European to reach the Mississippi River. As the Spanish governor of Cuba, de Soto had been surveying the entire southeast for conquest and settlement. De Soto died of a fever in Arkansas two weeks later, but his local legacy continues, five centuries later, with both our county and its seat, Hernando, bearing the conquistador’s name. • SOUTHAVENCHAMBER.COM 13

GOVERNMENT C IT Y G O V ER N M E N T Southaven operates under a Code Charter form of municipal government, represented by Mayor Darren Musselwhite and seven aldermen; six elected by ward, or district, and one elected citywide or at-large. In accordance with Mississippi Election Code, Southaven holds municipal elections every four years, with the next election cycle set for 2017. Southaven is a full-service city providing many public services including police and fire protection, EMS/ambulatory services, code enforcement, sanitation collection, household recycling, planning and zoning services, and parks and recreational services. Southaven maintains low property taxes while dedicating over 60 percent of its budget to public safety. Southaven’s forward-thinking government has implemented many innovative policies, including the first municipal property tax rebate in Mississippi and leveraging our parks and recreation system as an economic development tool.

B U SIN E SS O F T HE Y EAR Chick-fil-A Southaven St. Louis native Stuart Davidson opened his Chick-fil-A franchise in Southaven in 1998 after a 21year career with the Marriott Corporation, where he served in a dizzying array of roles: controller, personnel and training manager, business manager, food service director, and general manager. During his Marriott days, Davidson

WOMAN OF T HE Y EAR Cherie Jones, Signs & Stuff Cherie Jones was a resident of Southaven when the town’s future main retail artery, Goodman Road, was paved only with gravel and good intentions. As a mentor to countless youth and fellow small-business owners around Southaven, Jones leads by example, and she learned that way, too. She observed as her father started and grew a successful business that’s still going strong today. She and her best friend

opened her first business venture, Sweet Fantasies, in the early 1980s, making chocolates in her home kitchen. In 1986, she joined her sister’s sign businesses and grew it into Signs & Stuff, which went on to win graphic design awards from the United States Sign Council and was featured in SignCraft magazine. With her husband, daughter and son all helping to run the business, she currently serves on the board at the House of Grace and Southaven Chamber Ambassadors.
MAN OF T HE Y EAR Dan Lehman, Eldridge Services, Inc. Often described as a connector — of people, of businesses, services and ideas — Dan Lehman has a passion for helping others. Vice president and part owner of Eldridge Services Inc. (HVAC) since 2006, Lehman has previously served as a sales and marketing director or business development consultant with such companies as FedEx, Honeywell, GE Capital, and IPC in Germany. He has served on DeSoto Family Theatre’s board of directors since 2010, helping
out with show promotion, sponsor relations, set construction — even on stage, as an actor. Lehman has worked with six other community theatre companies and six high school theatre departments to share resources for show production. He has served on several other boards, including House of Grace (as president), Taste of DeSoto, and the Hernando Chamber of Commerce. An alumnus of Virginia Tech, Lehman and his wife, Andi, have two children, Reyn and Russell.

AMBASSADOR OF T HE Y EAR Brenylle Farmer, Trustmark Bank Brenylle Farmer is visible all over DeSoto County, volunteering for various charity organizations. She coordinated the United Way Campaign at Trustmark Bank, where she is vice president and private banking officer, and served as the bank’s volunteer coordinator
for the monthly food distribution program in Desoto County. Farmer served tirelessly in 2013 as the chairman of the Southaven Chamber’s Ambassador program. Farmer, her husband Darren, and their son, Lofton, are members of the Common Street Baptist Church.

E DUCATION Southaven’s remarkable growth — from a single residential development in 1958 to Mississippi’s third-largest city — carries with it both responsibilities and opportunities for educating our children and our workforce. With 33,000 students, DCS is the largest and — not surprisingly — fastest growing school district in Mississippi. ississippi’s public colleges and universities are allowed to waive out-of-state tuition rates to admitted students, including newcomers, but the criteria varies by school. For minor students (under 21), “in-state” status is normally based on the residency of custodial parents. Students over 21 can establish residency in their own right by proving they have lived continuously in Mississippi for at least 12 months after their 21st birthday, and that they intend to remain in the state indefinitely. Such proof may include filing for state income tax, eligibility to vote in Mississippi, possession of a Mississippi operator’s license and vehicle registration, and employment in Mississippi. Each college’s admissions offices can answer specific questions. The late Dave Bowden, owner of several area Zaxby’s restaurants, was a major donor and fundraiser for the race. His passion for Habitat for Humanity’s mission began when one of

SOUTHAVEN IS HOME TO MORE THAN 50 CHURCHES, WITH MORE THAN 130 THROUGHOUT DESOTO COUNTY, REPRESENTING MANY DENOMINATIONS AND A GROWING NUMBER OF NONDENOMINATIONAL CONGREGATIONS. A NUMBER OF CONGREGATIONS HAVE MEMBERSHIPS OF SEVERAL THOUSAND, YET SOUTHAVEN STILL HAS SMALL, WELL-ATTENDED COUNTRY CHURCHES.
The 132-year history of Brown Missionary Baptist Church includes many examples of how Southaven’s churches are really communities and not buildings—literally. It was founded in 1882 by former slaves, who met under a brush arbor (shelters commonly used in lieu of tents for outdoor revivals) and later a log cabin before they completed a traditional wood-frame structure in 1901. That sanctuary burned down in 1987, and the congregation met at the neighboring Faith Methodist (now Lifespring Methodist) until 1989, the year Bartholomew Orr became pastor at age 19. Brown Baptist also exemplifies Southaven’s dramatic growth. Pastor Orr’s first sermon there was heard by 75 people. Today, its members pack the 1,200-seat sanctuary three times
every Sunday morning. Brown Baptist operates a mission church in Ghana, the ACTS Career Center (see Education section) and 50 other programs and missions. Like Brown M.B., all Southaven churches are known for taking care of people outside of their congregations through various interfaith programs, including the Heartland Hands Food Pantry. While Heartland provides food to impoverished families throughout DeSoto County, most of its partner churches are in Southaven, including its host, Heartland Church, as well as Trinity Baptist, Brown M.B., and Broadway Baptist. The first merchant to set up shop at the old crossroads that would eventually become “51 & Main” could not have imagined how residents of this city would one day be able to shop, dine, hike, bike, and explore the way we do today. The ever-expanding choices within the city limits — and the Memphis metro area — make for a quality of life that attracts new residents and businesses here. Southaven’s cultural and recreation scene is as unique as the rest of the community, offering a rich combination of family-fun events, entertainment venues, parks, and open spaces. Southaven’s Department of Parks and Recreation maintains 20 neighborhood parks, offering a variety of fields, facilities, and opportunities for athletics and recreation. Programs include sports for youth and adults, day camps, and a wealth of activities for fitness and fun. Upcoming improvement plans include the development of a major multi-use trail for walking and
cycling, connecting the wooded trails of Central Park to Snowden Grove Park.
MUSI C AND T HEAT RE Southaven residents enjoy a shorter drive to downtown Memphis’ entertainment and cultural amenities than do many Memphis residents—from concerts and NBA games, to professional baseball games and Broadway shows, to the Memphis Symphony. But Southaven supports a flourishing cultural and artistic community in its own right. We enjoy major concerts at the 10,000-seat Landers Center — from Bill Gaither to Cirque du Soleil to Stone Temple Pilots — as well as locally produced plays and musicals by DeSoto Family Theatre. The Snowden Grove Amphitheatre has hosted ZZ Top, Sugarland, The White Stripes, Poison, and Velvet Revolver. Another favorite venue for the performing arts is the Southaven Performing Arts Center. Malco’s DeSoto Towne Cinema is a state-

SPORT S CENT ER Baseball The ballfields of Southaven are not merely playgrounds for local leagues. We have literally set new standards for youth baseball complexes around the country. The 17-field baseball-only Snowden Grove Park features many amenities and specifications normally found only at professional stadiums. It played host to the USSSA World Series for a decade and continues to host the NABF World Classics, Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series, and the Global Sports Baseball World Series. Tennis The DeSoto County Tennis Association coordinates local league tournaments for junior and adult teams in four north Mississippi cities. A NNUAL EVENT S Mid-South Fair The original and still the best, the Mid-South Fair, held at the Landers Center, has entertained families since 1856. Through the generations this nine-day, late-September event has hosted superstars, launched careers, and made memories for people of all ages. The wide range of famous entertainers to perform at the Fair include western movie legend Tom Mix, the Three Stooges, Bob Hope, and the Sugarhill Gang. Springfest Each April Southaven throws its own birthday party, known as Springfest, and invites 50,000 of its closest friends to celebrate at Snowden Grove Park. Down at the Crossroads: 51 & Main District Southaven grew from a quiet crossroads of the 1850s-era Nesbit-to-Memphis “plank road” (now part of U.S. Highway 51) and Stateline Road, which is called “Main Street” in town. It is now known as the 51 & Main District. Over several generations, trading posts and dairy farms gave way to gas stations, shopping centers, schools, and libraries as more and more families settled here. Many businesses have opened near this intersection, thrived, and moved on — usually to other parts of Southaven — but a number of landmark merchants have remained. Dale’s Restaurant is the bestknown example. This institution opened in 1959 as a dairy bar and quickly grew from a fast-food stand to a full-service restaurant serving classic Southern homecooked meals. It is owned and operated
by Dale Graham and his family. Other businesses and organizations tions who have been honored as 51 & Main ain District Business of the Month by the Chamber of Commerce includee Southaven Supply Co., Mitch Wright ht Plumbing, Heating and A/C, K & G Upholstery, Blann’s Martial Arts, Mid-South Emergency Light Service, Watson’s Cleaners and Alterations, State Farm Insurance/ Barry Bouchillon, Top Dollar Pawn, and First Baptist Church. New businesses continue to discover the advantages of setting up shop in Southaven’s oldest business district. In 2013 the City of Southaven adopted a Main Street Residential Plan, calling for the creation of an overlayy district that will allow commercial-residential ial and neighborhood office zoning in the area in an
