Saturday, February 28 12 pm—4 pm instructor: Jon Sutter level: all In this workshop, students select one of three spoon designs, transfer the design to wood, and cut, shape, and carve your own wooden spoon. These same skills can be applied to more advanced projects, such as sculpture or shaping legs for furniture. Tuition: $60 Materials: $10

Saturday, May 9 10 am—5 pm instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten level: intermediate Make a unique wood turned bowl, complete with oil finish. This workshop is suitable for students with some woodturning experience. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

Carved Vessel Saturday & Sunday March 28 & 29 10 am—5 pm instructor: Keun HO Peter Park level: all Carve a vessel out of solid wood using hand carving and basic woodworking tools. Saturday & Sunday April 25 & 26 10 am—5 pm instructor: Robert Bishop level: beginner Make your own lidded keepsake box while getting acquainted with various wood species and woodworking techniques. Half-lap and dowel joinery, wood grain orientation, design, proper sanding and wood finishing techniques are covered. Both woodworking machinery and hand tools are used to complete this project. Tuition: $225 Materials: Included in the tuition fee.

Wooden Cutting Boards Saturday, May 23 10 am—5 pm instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten level: all This fun session, design and build your own cutting board with a selection of different lumber species. Learn how to use a jointer, planer, and table saw in the creation of your project. Enjoy finishing your board by sanding, shaping edges, and using other tools. Tuition: $80 Materials: $30

Open Studio Sessions Have some studio experience under your belt? Use SCC’s studios to work on your own independent wood, metal, and mixed media craft projects. Saturday & Sunday May 30 & 31 10 am—5 pm H instructor: Julia Harrison, Seattle, WA level: intermediate Beautiful, versatile, and widely available, wood allows us to make jewelry that is both striking and personally relevant. Learn to make the most of colors and textures using simple tools and safe techniques appropriate for use in home studios. Topics include basic shaping and finishing, making and attaching findings, and surface embellishment such as resin inlay, pique, and stone setting. Leave with 2-3 unique pieces and a variety of samples. Tuition: $200 Materials: $25

Friday, Saturday & Sunday June 5, 6, & 7 10 am—5 pm instructor: Keun HO Peter Park level: all Create a unique and functional instrument from repurposed materials! This exciting, fun class teaches students simple woodworking and construction in a safe supportive atmosphere. Learn the safe use of machinery such as the band saw and drill press, the principals of acoustics, and the fundamentals and styles of rustic stringed instruments using found objects. All materials are provided, as students complete a cigar box guitar of their own. Tuition: $275 Materials: Included in the tuition fee.

Saturday, May 23 10 am—5 pm instructor: Albert Pantone level: all Make paper with invasive and destructive weeds from the Northeast! Students use plants collected from vacant lots that have been deconstructed and transformed into a blended pulp. The workshop focuses on texture, natural color, and the unpredictability of the wet pulp as it morphs into paper. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

Making Your Mark: Textures on Polymer

From Etch to Print: Printmaking Using the SaltWater Etching Process Saturday, February 28 10 am—5 pm instructors: Jim Bove & Scott Lloyd level: all Learn the complete salt-water etching process, how to set up an etching system and finally, how to make prints from your etched plates. Salt-water etching is a much safer alternative to acid etching and can achieve dramatic results in a short period of time. Tuition: $80 Materials: $40

The Urban Mosaicist: Building Relationships with Material 5 Wednesdays April 22, 29 & May 6, 13, 20 6—9 pm instructor: Rachel Sager level: all Expand your definition of mosaic. In this course you will be introduced to the fascinating historical language of mosaic by building substrates and foraging for materials in the urban landscape of Pittsburgh. Cutting stone, glass, and ceramic with the traditional hammer and hardie will be integral. Tuition: $200 Materials: $60

Introduction to Modern Quilting 4 Thursdays January 8, 15, 22, 29 6—9 pm instructor: Lauren Jonkman level: all Learn the basics of quilting with a modern twist. Join Lauren Jonkman, one of the founding members of the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild, while discovering the fundamentals of modern quilting and techniques such as tools and piecing, while completing a table runner, set of placemats, or mini-quilt. Saturday, January 24 10 am—5 pm instructor: Jenny Soracco level: all Enamels have long been used to add unique colors and patterns to objects and jewelry. Now you can try your hand at this versatile process. Students learn to fuse glass enamels to metal and experiment with a wide variety of surface effects such as sgraffito, basse taille, stencils and opaque/transparent layering. Each student has the opportunity to produce an enameled box, brooch or pendant. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

Saturday, March 28 10 am—5 pm instructor: Michael Studebaker level: all Learn direct forging, forming, piercing, and finishing as you make a cuff-style bracelet. Saturday, March 14 10 am—5 pm instructor: Sharon Massey level: all Design and create an original belt buckle using copper, brass, and nickel. Sawing, piercing, patinas, and rivets can be used to construct a functional buckle. Students may want to bring additional materials, such as bottle caps or printed tin can material to incorporate into their designs. Tuition: $80 Materials: $15

Introduction to Goldsmithing Saturday & Sunday April 11 & 12 10 am—5 pm H instructor: Wayne Werner, Havre de Grace, MD level: intermediate Expand your craft and learn the art of Goldsmithing. View gold in its natural state (nuggets, dendrites, flake and ore) and transform the gold from its crystalline liquid form to become workable material. Students learn how to design with gold to achieve maximum results. Soldering and polishing are demonstrated. Students are encouraged to bring in some pure gold to alloy as well as old gold to be tested and recycled into usable material. This class is designed for people who have a firm grasp on silver soldering and fabrication and want to explore the option of working with gold. This class is a must for those who wish to make a living as a jeweler. Tuition: $200 Materials: $100


Pendants & Wearable Vessels: Hydraulic Die-Forming Saturday & Sunday April 25 & 26 10 am—5 pm instructor: Katie Rearick level: all Learn to make hollow, volumetric forms in metal using the hydraulic press! Students will utilize the die-forming process to produce a pendant or small wearable vessel. Sawing, filing, annealing, soldering and forming will all be covered. Surface design and finishing techniques will also be taught. Tuition: $160 Materials: $35

Jason Walker Saturday & Sunday February 7 & 8 10 am—5 pm instructor: Yoko Sekino-Bove level: all This is your opportunity to learn how to construct a ceramic teapot using handbuilding techniques. On the second day, students can create a cup or two for their set. The workshop covers soft-slab construction and surface decoration techniques such as stamping, carving, and underglaze painting. Tuition: $160 Materials: $20

Clay with Jason Walker Saturday, April 18 1-4 pm H instructor: Jason Walker, Bellingham, WA level: all Join Bridge artist Jason Walker for a discussion focused on his current body of work. Following the talk, jump into some hands-on making in SCC’s Studio. This event is co-sponsored with the Carnegie Museum of Art. Tuition: $45 Materials: included in the tuition fee.

This intensive introduction to metalsmithing will provide students with the fundamentals necessary to enroll in any of the other metals workshops offered at Contemporary Craft. clay Textured Clay Tiles 3 Tuesdays May 19, 26 & June 2 6—9 pm instructor: Alix Paul level: all Explore the endless possibilities of creating unique personal tiles of all shapes and sizes with low fire clay to incorporate into mosaics, jewelry or mixed media work. The class focuses on exploring texture. Tiles are bisque fired and may be decorated with underglazes. Tuition: $160 Materials: Included in the tuition fee.

Handbuilt Lidded Container 4 Tuesdays June 9, 16, 23, 30 6—9 pm instructor: Michael Smithhammer level: all Construct two lidded containers while learning approaches to surface treatments that enhance the tactile beauty of your ceramic forms. Tuition: $225 Materials: Included in the tuition fee.

Special PMC (Precious Metal Clay) Series

Donna Penoyer

Instructor: Donna Penoyer Learn how to make successful pieces in PMC, an amazing form of silver that acts like clay but fires to pure metal with a torch or kiln. Students may take one or multiple workshops. Tuition: Introduction to PMC, $80. The three subsequent PMC workshops can be added as a package for $150 or for $60 per session. The introductory class, or permission from the instructor, is a prerequisite for Donna's other PMC workshops. Materials: $40 per session

Sunday, March 1 9 am—5 pm level: all Learn to texture, form, fire and finish fine silver PMC. Create surface designs using textures that are all around us—from rubber stamps, to the soles of shoes, to actual leaves—as well as some simple DIY texture plates. A kiln-firing is offered in class.

Sunday, March 15 10 am—2 pm level: intermediate Learn what makes a strong silver clay ring, and how to plan for metal clay shrinkage to achieve the correct size after firing. Discover the benefits of "960" clay, a homemade blend of PMC3 and PMC Sterling, which is stronger than fine silver. The teacher fires pieces after the workshop.

Including Fireable Objects in PMC Sunday, March 8 10 am—2 pm level: intermediate Learn how to include fire-safe elements in fine silver PMC. Learn about firing equipment and objects to avoid. Make a piece that incorporates wire, cubic zirconia, or a small glass cabochon. The teacher fires pieces after the workshop.

Hollow PMC Beads Sunday, March 22 10 am—2 pm level: intermediate Build upon your foundation in metal clay to construct hollow forms. Students create a fine silver lentil bead made from back-to-back domes, or a three-sided hollow pendant with a curved front, flat back, and flat top. The teacher fires pieces after the workshop.

Sunday, March 1, 8, 15 and/or 22 10 am—2 pm level: intermediate to advanced instructor: Donna Penoyer Sign up for one or more sessions in this open studio series, and enjoy the benefits of SCC's studios, Donna's tools and advice, and the camaraderie of other students. Bring your own materials, or arrange to buy them from Donna. Students should be able to work independently in the basics of metal clay—a quick review is OK. Permission from the instructor and a discussion of your needs are required before registration, at least one week in advance of the session. Tuition: $50 per session

CLASS INFORMATION

• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

MATERIALS

Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded. Refund Policy: 1-2 Day Workshops Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks. 3-5 Day Workshops Cancellations with 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a three-, four- or five-day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a three-, four- or five-day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

One-on-One & Studio Rentals

Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
