BACKGROUND Presenting contemporary art in craft media by regional, national, and international artists since 1971, Contemporary Craft (CCraft) offers cutting edge exhibitions focusing on multicultural diversity and nonmainstream art, as well as a range of studio workshops, community outreach programs, and a retail store. With its mission of engaging the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft, CCraft offers meaningful art opportunities for more than 145,000 people a year through four core values: providing vital support for artists; filling critical gaps in public education; sharing crosscultural perspectives; and using art to build community.

MIXED MEDIA

OPEN STUDIOS

Have some studio experience under your belt? Use Contemporary Craft’s studios to work on your own independent wood, metal, and mixed media craft projects. A variety of tools and equipment will be available during the four weekly sessions. Wednesdays, open until 7pm. Tuition: $90 for a group of four sessions, or $30 per session.

A CONCRETE IDEA Sat, July 15 10am-1pm Instructor: Allison Jones Level: all Discover the possibilities of using concrete in jewelry design. Participants will learn how to mix concrete with pigments and prepare a bezel for use with this industrial material. The ideal process for curing, sanding, and finishing a concrete piece will be taught. Tuition: $45 Materials: $35

FREE FORM WIRE JEWELRY Wed, August 9 6-9pm Instructor: Gerry Florida Level: all Create a pendant with beaded elements spiraling out of a central point. Learn how to extend the design to master wire working and hammer texturing techniques. Tuition: $45 Materials: Instructor will supply list

I LOVE LEFT OVERS: ASSEMBLAGE Sat, August 19 1-5pm Instructor: Gerry Florida Level: all Don’t know what to do with that collection of do dads, bobbles and charms? Learn to incorporate leftover accessories and showcase those one of a kind treasures as you explore the creative world of assemblage jewelry. Create a beautiful bracelet or necklace. Learn composition as applied in jewelry, basic assemblage, cold connection techniques, and simple wiring skills. Tuition: $60 Materials: Instructor will supply list

WOOD TURNED BOTTLE STOPPERS Sat, June 24 10am-5pm Instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten Level: all Create two bottle stoppers out of figured hardwoods and learn the basics of woodturning. Bottle stoppers make great gifts and are a wonderful addition to the kitchen. Tuition: $80 Materials: $30

WOOD TURNED BOWLS Sat, August 19 10am-5pm Instructor: Dave Betler Level: all Tackle the basics of the wood turned bowl in this one-day workshop. Participants will become acquainted with the woodshop and basic safety procedures while learning to operate a lathe. All students will leave with at least one finished project. Perfect for beginners! Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

COLLAPSIBLE STOOL Sat & Sun, August 26 & 27 10am-5pm Instructor: Tadao Arimoto Level: all Master wood artist, Tadao Arimoto, will work with students to create a unique 12-inch stool. Once finished, the stool can be collapsed by pulling just one pin! Students will employ contemporary woodworking skills, while using a combination of traditional Japanese tools (chisels, planes and saws) and modern power tools. Tuition: $200 Materials: Included in tuition

METALS BENCH RENTALS

Take advantage of Contemporary Craft’s new bench rental program. Rentals include a locked bench, locker, and use of the metals studio when workshops are not in session. BASIC METALS Sat, June 3 10am-5pm Instructor: Katie Rearick Level: all Learn the basics of the metals studio and tools while creating handmade jewelry. Skills such as sawing, filing, soldering, and finishing will be covered along with basic safety. Tuition: $80 Materials: $30

CLOISONNÉ ENAMELING Sun, June 4 10am-5pm Instructor: Adrienne Grafton Level: all Learn the art of cloisonné enameling. Students will bend fine silver wires, fire them down to a vitreous enameled surface, and then build layers of color with enamel. The instructor will discuss basic enameling techniques and each student will create at least one cloisonné piece. Beginners welcome. Tuition: $80 Materials: $30

INTRO TO FORGING Sat & Sun, July 22 & 23 10am-5pm Instructor: Glen Gardner Level: all Forging remains one of the most effective methods for rapidly forming almost any metal into a variety of shapes. Participants will learn the finer aspects of working with hammers and explore the basics of hot and cold forging. Tuition: $160 Materials: $45

BANGING & BREWING Sat & Sun, August 19 & 20 9am-5pm Instructor: Sean Macmillan Level: intermediate Master light hammer forming over soldered lap-joints to make a customized beer mug, while learning to brew beer! Raising, sinking, snarling, chasing and anticlastic forming methods will be explored. Stainless mug inserts will be provided to make the mug food safe. All-grain and extract brewing will be demonstrated along with bottling and basic sanitation. Tuition: $160 Materials: $45 Missy Graff Ballone

WELLNESS IN YOUR STUDIO PRACTICE Sat, August 26 10am-3pm Instructor: Missy Graff Ballone Level: all This class is designed for artists and craftsmen who want to utilize a series of techniques throughout the workday to increase health and productivity. Learn how to maintain a sustainable studio practice. Missy Graff Ballone, founder of Wellness for Makers, will demonstrate basic stretching and massage techniques that can be incorporated into your daily studio practice. Tuition: $100 Materials: $20

YOGA IN THE GALLERY Sun, August 27 9-10am Instructor: Missy Graff Ballone Level: all Grab a yoga mat and join Missy Graff Ballone, founder of Wellness for Makers, for a morning yoga session in the gallery at Contemporary Craft. ENAMELING TECHNIQUES FOR THE HANDMADE BOOK Sat & Sun, June 10 & 11 10am-5pm Instructor: Barbara McFadyen Level: all Watercolor and acrylic enamels yield colorful and exciting imagery! Explore a variety of vitreous enameling techniques from graphite or underglaze pencils to sifted stencils and waterslide decals. Students will be guided on how to apply these materials to preenameled steel plate panels to create a unique accordion fold artist book. Tuition: $200 Materials: $55

OPEN STUDIO PAPERMAKING Wed, June 14 6-9pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: all Stop by and try your hand at papermaking. The instructor will provide essential Hollander training and discuss basic sheet forming with inclusions. Tuition: $45 Materials: $15

THE DRAWN SURFACE: UNDERGLAZE PENCIL & WASHES ON CLAY Sat, June 3 10am-4pm Instructor: CJ Niehaus Level: all Explore the soft lines and shading of underglaze pencils as the instructor discusses her inspiration and the subject matter behind her porcelain work. Tips for getting the underglaze pencil to perform without smudges will be covered, along with the use of color and underglaze washes with glaze. Tuition: $100 Materials: $35

WEAVING IN CLAY Wed, July 12 & 19 6-9pm Instructor: Mark Vander Heide Level: all Explore ceramic hand-building techniques of weaving during the first session, and learn tips and tricks to successfully weave with clay. In the second session, students further the forms with various fibers and found materials. Tuition: $80 Materials: $15

INTRO TO RAKU Sun, July 9 10am-3pm Instructor: Dan Kuhn Level: all Create a unique, raku-fired vase. First, students will glaze a bisquefired ceramic vase and prepare it for raku firing. While the artwork fires, participants will take a 90-minute hiatus to explore the Strip District. In the afternoon, fired pieces will be removed from the kiln and cleaned to produce a marvelous, finished vessel. Tuition: $60 Materials: $35

RESIST DECORATION ON CLAY Wednesday, August 9 6-9pm Instructor: Amanda Wolf Level: all Make a plate or platter and learn two amazing decorating techniques. Use paper or plant material to resist colored slips and create cool contrast. Each piece will be finished with a clear glaze and fired so it will be functional. Tuition: $45 Materials: $20

CUSTOM BABY CLOTHING Sat, June 24 1-5pm Instructor: Lauren Sims Level: all Create something special for the little ones in your life. Students will explore creative ways to create or alter children’s clothing. The instructor will discuss the practice of altering existing clothing and introduce common sewing techniques. Tuition: $60 Materials: $15

FREE THE DOLLS Sat, August 5 1-5pm Instructor: Daniel Baxter Level: all Start life over from this workshop forward! Learn to make living Kreepy Dolls. Recycle any old fabrics as you turn unwanted cloth into love, that you can share with yourself or give to a friend. Bring materials or be surprised by the rainbow to work with that Daniel provides. Bring your imagination and leave your inhibitions, because the world needs your art! Tuition: $60 Materials: $10

INTRO TO THE LOOM Sat & Sun, August 12 & 13 10am-5pm Instructor: Jhenny Adams Level: all If you already own a loom or have been thinking about taking up the craft, this class is for you! Learn how to warp the yarn, set up the loom, and get weaving! Students will be required to bring their own looms. If you don’t own a loom and want to get in on the fun, the instructor can recommend affordable options. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

BOTANICAL PRINTING & BAGS Sat & Sun, August 12 & 13 10am-5pm Instructor: Jill Valenzuela Level: all Botanical or eco printing is a method of making natural impressions of leaves and flowers on fabric. Students will learn how to permanently transfer plant and flower material onto fabric. Each one-of-a-kind sample will then be turned into a useful bag. Tuition: $160 Materials: $55

TIN CAN COLLAGE Fri, June 16 6-9pm Instructor: Kim Fox Level: all Come get your hands dirty with a cold beer, a hammer, and some lovely old tins. We’ll be creating tin collages on salvaged wood. It’ll be a noisy, good time! Tuition: $35 Materials: All materials and two complimentary beverages included!

KREEPY DOLLS Fri, July 14 6-9pm Instructor: Daniel Baxter Level: all Bring imagination to life and make a kreepy doll! Students will realize the kreepy doll’s design with drawings and develop their vision into a 3-D figure. Learn sewing tricks and doll making strategies including creative needling, string theory, pattern making, and the power of smiling. Tuition: $35 Materials: All materials and two complimentary beverages included!

PAPERMAKING FROM HOPS Fri, August 4 6-9pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: all Craft brewing meets papermaking in this workshop! Using the grains, fibers, and vines reclaimed from the brewing process, students will create golden handmade papers. Embellish the paper with hop flowers and wet-on-wet collage using vintage ephemera. Tuition: $35 Materials: All materials and two complimentary beverages included!

Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before start date. If a class must be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.

Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

1-2 Day Workshops

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students’ photos may appear in CCraft’s promotional materials. • CCraft makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, CCraft reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

Cancellations, 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations, fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALS Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.

Shelter provides a forum for craft artists’ responses to issues of shelter—global and local, public and private.
