BACKGROUND Presenting contemporary art in craft media by regional, national, and international artists since 1971, the Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) offers cutting edge exhibitions focusing on multicultural diversity and nonmainstream art, as well as a range of studio workshops, community outreach programs, and a retail store. With its mission of engaging the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft, SCC offers meaningful art opportunities for more than 145,000 people a year through four core values: providing vital support for artists; filling critical gaps in public education; sharing crosscultural perspectives; and using art to build community.

FAMILY FUN WITH PAPERCLAY Sat, September 3 1-4pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: all Bring the whole family for this fun-filled workshop! Students will create a personal paperclay spirit animal, which will be oncefired. Both adults and children are welcome. Tuition: $45 Materials: $15
SCULPTING SMALL MAMMALS WITH CLAY Sat & Sun, September 10 & 11 10am-5pm Visiting Artist: Matt Dercole Level: all Craft small-scale mammals using simple armatures to build solid clay forms. Students will consider pose and expression for their form, employ techniques for adding detail, and then hollow out and discuss finishing possibilities. Tuition: $230 Materials: included in tuition fee
INTRO TO RAKU Sat, October 29 10am-3pm Instructor: Dan Kuhn Level: all Create a unique, raku-fired vase! In the morning, students will glaze a ceramic vase and prepare it for raku firing. While the artwork fires, participants will take a 90-minute hiatus to explore the Strip District. In the afternoon, fired pieces will be removed from the kiln and cleaned to produce a marvelous, finished vessel. Tuition: $60 Materials: $25
PORCELAIN PAPERCLAY: HANDBUILT VESSELS Sat, November 5 10am-5pm Instructor: Danna Rzecznik Level: all Explore the expressive possibilities and technical advantages of hand-building with cone 6 porcelain paperclay. Students will learn the process of converting commercial porcelain into the easy-to-use and versatile material of paperclay. The instructor will demonstrate handbuilding techniques with an emphasis on pinching, soft-slab construction, and more. Work will be once-fired. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

WOOD TURNED BOWLS Sat, September 10 10am-5pm Instructor: Dave Betler Level: all Tackle the basics of the wood turned bowl in this one-day workshop. Participants will become acquainted with the woodshop and basic safety procedures while learning to operate a lathe. All students will leave with at least one finished project. Perfect for beginners! Tuition: $80 Materials: $25
BINZASARA Sat & Sun, October 1 & 2 10am-5pm Instructor: Tadao Arimoto Level: all Make a traditional Japanese binzasara in this two-day workshop. Students will learn all of the steps required to assemble their own percussion instrument, which they will be able to play by the end of the second day. Tuition: $160 Materials: $25
WOOD RINGS & WIRE INLAY Sat & Sun, October 8 & 9 10am-5pm Visiting Artist: Dan DiCaprio Level: intermediate Gain the basic knowledge needed to carve wooden jewelry, as well as an introduction to combining wood and metal in your work. Students will carve rings from blocks of ebony while shaping their designs with ďŹ les, rasps, and burs for a perfect fit. Tuition: $200 Materials: $25

BASIC LATHE OPERATION Sat, November 12 1pm-5pm Instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten Level: all Learn simple techniques for using the lathe and related tools. Process and safety issues will be addressed, as well as tools and techniques. Students will walk away with an understanding of lathe operation and safety, as well as a few small, completed projects. Tuition: $60 Materials: $25 PREPARING LOGS FOR NATURAL EDGE BOWLS Wed, November 16 10am-5pm Instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten Level: all Learn to prepare a log for turning a natural edge bowl. Harvesting, coring, and storing will all be covered. Linda, a professional wood turner, will take students through the step-by-step process of prep and then demonstrate turning a natural edge bowl. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

CAST AWAY Sat & Sun, August 27 & 28 10am-5pm Instructor: Elizabeth Fortunato Level: all Experiment with mold making, casting, and glass fusion. Students will learn how to mix alginate and plaster silica molds in order to create wax, plaster, and glass casts. Use a found object or cast your own skin to recreate, enhance, and transform objects. Tuition: $160 Materials Fee: $35
MOSAIC MAGIC Sat, October 29 10am-5pm Instructor: Christina Fisher Level: all Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers and Isaiah Zagar’s Magic Gardens are folk art masterpieces. The artists’ methods are like free form jazz, creating kaleidoscopic structures out of scraps of glass and discarded crockery. In this workshop, students will learn similar mosaic methods to create small sculptures of their own design. Tuition: $80 Materials Fee: $40
CARVE YOUR HEART OUT Sat & Sun, November 12 &13 10am-5pm Visiting Artist: Steven Gordan Holman Level: all Discover the techniques necessary for a strong foundation in carving. Using a variety of tools, students will manipulate solid materials including bone, antler, and tagua. A series of technical exercises will reinforce the basics of surface carving, embellishment, and inlay. Participants will leave with a completed ring or pendant. Tuition: $200 Materials Fee: $10

PIECES OF YOU: THE ART OF ASSEMBLAGE Sat & Sun, November 12 &13 10am-5pm Instructor: Dafna Rehavia Level: all Enjoy a weekend of imagination, play, and intuition. Learn to fasten meaningful and selfmade objects together using glue, nails, string, and other methods to achieve a new, meaningful personal assemblage. METAL OPEN STUDIOS
Have some studio experience under your belt? Use SCC’s studios to work on your own independent wood, metal, and mixed media projects. A variety of tools and equipment will be available during the four weekly sessions. Wednesdays, 6-9pm Tuition: $90 for a group of four sessions, or $30 per session
HOLLOW CONSTRUCTION Sat & Sun, September 17 & 18 10am-5pm Visiting Artist: Aran Galligan Level: intermediate Add dimension to your work with hollow construction. This workshop will push your soldering skills to the next level. Hollow construction utilizes sheet fabrication and uses multiple and complex solder seams. It can be used to make boxes, rings, lockets, beads, and much more. Basic metalworking experience (sawing, filing and soldering) is required. Tuition: $200 Materials: $25
ETCH TO PRINT TO ADORN Sat, October 1 10am-5pm Instructor: Jim Bové Level: all Discover the salt-water etching process, a safer alternative to acid that can achieve dramatic results in a short period of time. Start with learning to set up an etching system and then make prints from your etched plates. In the afternoon, students will turn their plates into adornments. Tuition: $80 Materials: $40 INTRO TO ENAMELING Sat, November 5 1pm-5pm Instructor: Jenny Butterfield Level: all Explore the versatile process of enameling. During this workshop students will learn the basics of fusing colored glass enamels to metal while playing with a variety of surface effects. Each participant will have the opportunity to produce a finished piece of jewelry. Tuition: $60 Materials: $25

ALTERED BOOKS Sat, October 22 10am-3pm Instructor: Chris Fondi Level: all Create a work of self-expression while experimenting with mixed media. Art journaling is about exploring emotions and thoughts, both written and visual. Your altered book is a place for feelings that may not otherwise have a home. Tuition: $60 Materials Fee: $10
EXPERIMENTAL PRINTMAKING: THE MONOTYPE Sat, December 10 1-5pm Instructor: Rachel Saul Level: all Create a series of monotype prints from woodblocks. Students will have the opportunity to make at least three prints as they explore ways to incorporate pieces of paper, fabric, and found objects into their artwork. Tuition: $60 Materials Fee: $25

ORIGAMI Fri, October 7 6-9pm Instructor: Wendy Casperson Level: all Trade in your office work for paperwork that’s fun and inspiring! Create an intricate paper globe using folded units. And since no origami workshop would be complete without them—learn to fold a paper crane or two! Try your hand at mehndi designs and create your own contemporary patterns. LET’S MAKE SOME BASKETS! Sun, August 28 10am-5pm Instructor: Amy Masters Level: all Enjoy a fun, hands-on exploration of the basketry technique of coiling. In this one-day workshop, students will experiment with materials, stitches, and surface detail. Historical and contemporary examples of the basket as a vessel will be discussed. Tuition: $80 Materials Fee: $25
DYING & DRY-FELTING WITH ALPACA Sat, September 24 10am-5pm Instructor: Alexandra Kirsch Level: all Learn how to process (clean and card) alpaca hair. After processing, students will make their own dye to color the hair. The final portion of the workshop will be spent dryfelting a unique sculpture. Co-sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. BOTANICAL PRINTING Sat & Sun, September 24 & 25 10am-5pm Instructor: Jill Valenzuela Level: all Botanical or eco printing is a method of making natural impressions of leaves and flowers on fabric. In this workshop, students will learn how to permanently transfer plant and flower material onto textiles. Each one-of-a-kind fabric will then be turned into a useful Japanese bento cloth. COLOR TO DYE FOR Sat, October 1 10am-5pm Instructor: Dena Gershon Level: all Gain the experience and techniques needed to safely create luscious, hand-dyed fiber using highly effective low-water techniques that yield fast and brilliant results. Students will work with fine protein fibers such as merino wool, mohair, and silk in a variety of forms and leave with baggies full of beautifully dyed locks, roving, fabric, and yarn. TINY TREASURES: WAXED LINEN BASKETS Sat & Sun, October 22 & 23 10am-5pm Instructor: Lauren Lampe Level: all Explore the art of miniature, twinned, waxed linen basketmaking. These baskets are small and require very few tools, making the craft highly portable and easy to do anywhere. A variety of techniques and starting methods will be discussed and explored. Tuition: $160 Materials Fee: $20 SOFT SCULPTURE Sat & Sun, December 3 & 4 10am-5pm Instructor: Christina Fisher Level: all Experiment with creative object-making using fabric. The history of soft sculpture will be discussed, including its application in installation, wearable, and interactive art. WORLDS Find inspiration in both urban and rural settings with this special workshop series. Contemporary Craft and Touchstone Center for the Arts are partnering to present making experiences utilizing both of their unique facilities. The first day of each workshop is held at Contemporary Craft, in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. The following two days will be held at Touchstone, in Farmington, PA. BOX BOOKS: QUILTING FRAGMENTS INTO VISUAL NARRATIVES Fri, Sat & Sun September 9, 10 &11 10am-5pm Instructor: Daria Sandburg Level: all Make your very own “Box Book,” or visual narrative, by combining words with found objects. Bring new life to rescued objects and various ephemera gathered from everyday experiences, ultimately combining them into surprising new creations— beautiful somethings from discarded nothings! TOOL MAKING, START TO FINISH Fri, Sat & Sun September 9, 10 & 11 10am-5pm Instructors: Linda Van Gehuchten and Glen Gardner Level: all Everyone loves custom tools, and now you can make your own set! The first day will be spent turning wooden handles, and the following two days will be spent forging and forming the tool inserts. Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before start date. If a class must be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.
Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.
1-2 Day Workshops
WORKSHOP INFORMATION
Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.
• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students’ photos may appear in SCC’s promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.
Cancellations, 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations, fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALS Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
