a word from Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) was founded in 1971 by Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael in the belief that contemporary
artists had new things to say with traditional materials, and that they needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Since then, SCC has organized more than 225 exhibitions, created strong educational and community outreach programs, established a satellite gallery and a permanent collection, and developed a growing retail business.

our director Dear Friends, Reading over the intriguing class offerings put together by Director of Education Sherrard Bostwick for the coming months, I’m inspired to take a “busman’s holiday” in SCC’s Studio — all summer long. The expression, which dates to 1893 in the UK, refers to someone who drives a bus for a living, and then goes on a long bus journey for his holiday. For me, there’s a sweet torture to working at SCC. I can’t think of any place I’d rather work. I’m lucky to be able to meet talented artists, and I love “living with” their art in our gallery and store. But it’s rare that I take time off from my “day job” to enjoy what I love most about this place — the chance to make art! For example, I want to sign up for “Pueblo Pop” on May 12, a rare chance to work with artist Jason Garcia (Okuu’ Pin Turtle Mountain) of the Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico. He’ll show us how he transforms clay tiles made in the traditional Pueblo way with hand-gathered native clay and outdoor firings into a visually rich mix of Pueblo history and culture, comic book superheroes, video game characters, religious icons and all things pop culture. Then he’ll guide us in making our own: I’ve already got some ideas and images in mind. Another workshop that caught my eye is Meghan Patrice Riley’s “French Knitting with Wire” on June 23-24. The jewelry made by this young 2011 Raphael Prizewinner is innovative, hip and fresh. Meghan thinks outside the box when she creates, citing both her love of mathematical forms and pop culture, such as the Gossip Girl TV show and the fashion industry, as influences on her work. Beyond learning how to knit with wire, just having the chance to sit with her for a weekend to discuss art and her creative journey will be a treat. Finally, Yoko Sekino-Bové’s “Childhood Memories of an Adult World,” from 5:30 to 7 pm on July 28, has captured my imagination. I’m planning to invite some friends to join me for cocktails as we learn from Yoko about her exquisite, Japanese-inspired drinking game sets that incorporate cultural styles and traditional symbols. And we’ll each get to take home one of Yoko’s beautiful, handmade sake cups! If you’re looking for an inspiring and affordable way to spend some vacation time this season, why not join me on my busman’s holiday? I’m confident you won’t be disappointed. instructor: Cynthia Shaffer Learn about the ancient art of henna tattooing in Indian, African, Middle Eastern and modern cultures. Students will be taught the techniques necessary to create any style of design, and guided step by step in applying an Ethiopian medallion, an Indian vine and a Chinese happiness character on their own skin. Henna is a non-toxic paste made from natural ground leaves of the henna plant. Tattoos dye the top layers of skin a rich brown color, which wears off in about a week. Bring your sisters, daughters, friends and nieces to celebrate summer!
instructor: Gerry Florida, SCC Artist + Kids artist Learn to appreciate the elegant designs that arise from the imperfections of assemblage jewelry, and to use recycled materials to make social, personal and style statements. Composing in found objects and an array of "funky junk” is also a wonderful way to understand design principles. In this class, discuss where to find materials and how to adapt them into jewelry pieces, while working at your own speed on a project of your choice. instructor: Jon Sutter Have you ever considered the expressive potential of a wooden spoon? In this workshop, you will select one of three spoon designs, transfer the design to wood, and cut, shape and carve your spoon. In addition to being a fun and rewarding hobby, spoon carving builds the visualization skills necessary to release a form from solid material, develops manual dexterity and demonstrates the need to plan one's carving process. These same skills can then be applied to more advanced projects, such as sculpture or shaping legs for furniture.
instructor: Cynthia Shaffer Be inspired by artist Cynthia Shaffer’s brilliant collection of mounted beetles, which illustrates every stage of a self-sustaining insect ecosystem. Students will use balsa foam, a soft, lightweight carving material, to carve a realistic beetle based on a living species. After carving, the beetles will come to life with colors and wire detailing that transforms each creation into a magnificent sculpture. instructor: Sharon Massey, SCC Store artist Decals are an easy way to add imagery and/or text to vitreous enamel. In this workshop, learn to create custom decals with a laser printer, and then how to fire them into enamel. Vintage waterslide decals will be covered, as well as ways to create custom decals in color. Additional techniques using graphite and enamel will also be taught.
instructor: Donna Penoyer Working in metal clay is a wonderful way to take inspiration from nature, and capture springtime details beautifully and easily. Bronze and copper, both inexpensive metal clays, will be used separately or together to make pendants, charms or earrings. The instructor will present two approaches: 1) impressing metal clay directly with leaves, bark or other plant materials to create jewelry with natural textures, and 2) taking molds of natural objects, such as tiny shells, to make raised images and components. No experience is necessary.

H instructor: Kathryn Osgood, SCC Store & visiting artist from Wanchese, NC Explore and add color to your jewelry and metalwork through the use of traditional and alternative methods of color on metal, including patina, resin, image transfer, color pencil and torch-fired enamel. Students in this class will experiment with color as a means of surface enrichment and personal expression. Each student will produce textured color pencil earrings and a color resin pendant.

Learn to enamel on threedimensional forms, create colorful surfaces by layering transparent and opaque enamels, develop rich surface textures through sugarfiring enamels, and master the techniques for setting your enamel piece to produce a finished jewel. This class will cover metal forming techniques, including shell-forming, fold-forming and die-forming, as well as the use of acrylic and watercolor enamels, foils and underglazes to add detail. Techniques for setting enamels will include prong setting, tab setting, pre-soldered findings and frame setting. Previous metalworking experience is helpful, but all levels are welcome. H instructor: Susanne Matsché, SCC Store & visiting artist from Berlin, Germany Susanne Matsché has studied jewelry and metals in Austria, Germany and Russia. In this class, she will introduce students to the ancient art of filigree jewelry. The workshop begins with a short introduction to the history and incredibly rich tradition of filigree jewelry, and features traditional and contemporary filigree pieces on display as examples. Students will prepare decorative fine silver wires, make their own solder, and create fine and light pieces of jewelry. Some previous metalsmithing experience is recommended, but the technically unusual approach – the dead soft wire, assembling complex ornaments with glue on paper and using powdered solder – will be inspiring for professionals and amateurs alike. Students will be encouraged to think about environmental issues, especially recycling, in broad and atypical ways; resulting in creative responses to the issues raised. Raphael Founder’s Prize for small metals winner Spool knitting, corking, French knitting or tomboy knitting is a form of knitting that is done on a spool and nails to create a spiral knit woven cord. On Saturday, students will use wire to make spool-knit chains that will be transformed on Sunday into bracelets, cuffs, necklaces or earrings with handmade clasps. Meghan Patrice Riley is a metalsmith who uses textile techniques to fabricate elegant handcrafted metal artworks with a light industrial touch that are inspired by volumetric forms. In this class, you will combine perforation with sterling silver and alternative materials to create a wearable piece. The possibilities are endless with this technique because it is a quick and easy way to get a natural looking surface texture.

Metalsmithing Fundamentals [M080112]

registration deadline: July 20 Learn the basic steps of soldering and how to fashion three types of solder joints – butt, seam and sweat – that are used routinely in metalsmithing. This introduction to or review of soldering will prepare students to work independently in their own studios or in the Open Metals Studio Sessions, held Wednesday evenings in August at SCC. The silver soldering process and safety issues will be demonstrated and discussed, along with equipment, tools and techniques. Students will finish with many examples of the three solder joints and feel confident in applying these techniques to their future work.

Discover how to adapt this dynamic and unpredictable ceramics technique to enamel. date & time: Saturday August 25 1—4 pm registration deadline: August 17 instructor: Todd Pownell This demonstration workshop will teach the anatomy of a gemstone, qualities such as hardness and refractive indexes, metallurgy differences and choices, and the use of tools. Many types of stone setting will be covered, including prong, channel, bead, pave and invisible. Students will explore established attitudes and the mindful attention needed to approach the skill of setting gemstones in metal. Todd Pownell, an accomplished stone setter and gemologist with more than 25 years of experience in the field of fine jewelry making, will show how a chaotic process combined with the internal nature of gemstones and metals yields a unique finished piece.

The opposing qualities of fiber and metal—warm versus cool, soft versus hard, flexible versus rigid—draw enthusiasts from both mediums, as well as curious beginners. This class will cover metal processes, such as sawing, drilling, dapping and wire forming, to create beads with metal end caps and earrings with French hooks. H instructor: Thea Clark, SCC Store & visiting artist from Maplewood, NJ Make two projects: a riveted metal and felt pendant, and a jewelry scale sculptural form with metal wire containing needle felt. Using basic soldering and cold connections like rivets and tabs, this class will examine various approaches to combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional felt with metals. Joinery techniques and finishing options will also be discussed. instructor: Amy DiPlacido, SCC Store Artist Shibori is a Japanese term for methods of dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting and compressing. This class introduces students to immersion dyeing with prom dyes on silk. Each student will dye a silk scarf in the arashi shibori method, which translates as ‘wind driven rain’.

This workshop focuses on using the portable and inexpensive Hot Head torch to make beads for use in handmade gifts. Also have the option of purchasing hardware and other supplies to turn the new creations into bookmarks, key chains, necklaces, bracelets and zipper pulls. New and returning students are welcome, and can expect to make four to ten glass beads.

Join SCC and Four Winds Gallery for a free reception and artist talks by two renowned Santa Clara, NM artists. A traditional purpose of Pueblo pottery is to present the values and principles of Pueblo cosmology. This evening will be a rare opportunity to witness the creative blending of ancient iconography with contemporary life. Potter Linda TafoyaSanchez, granddaughter of Margaret Tafoya, matriarch of Santa Clara Pottery, will demonstrate Southwest hand-built ceramics as her sons, Jeremy and A.J. Oyenque, narrate her process and reveal its purpose and meaning. Work by Margaret Tafoya will be displayed. Next, Jason Garcia will speak about his tile paintings, which he creates on hand-dug Santa Clara clay with mineral pigments. Garcia’s work portrays traditional dances, Pueblo landscapes and religious icons as it simultaneously confronts the contemporary realities of constant change. Native American ceramics scholar and author Charles King introduces the program.

Blacksmithing: An Iron-troduction [MaM061312] date & time: Wednesday June 13 5:30—7 pm artists: Chris Holt & John Steel, of Steel Welding & the Pittsburgh Area ArtistBlacksmiths Association This ‘Tune for June’ will provide an educational evening about the age-old craft of blacksmithing, beginning with a presentation on creative trends in decorative ironwork. Attendees will learn to identify good ironwork, how to care for rusted iron, and about choices for railings and gates. A display of examples will allow students to see and feel the difference between mass-produced and finely crafted work. Prices of hand-forged items vary widely, and architects, landscape designers, interior decorators, antique dealers, engineers and interested homeowners will all benefit from gaining a better understanding of quality. aker Childhood Memories of an Adult World [MaM072812] date & time: Saturday July 28 5:30—7 pm artist: Yoko Sekino-Bové, SCC Store artist Join ceramist Yoko Sekino-Bové, a 2011 finalist for the Niche Award, for an evening exploring her porcelain artworks that mix and match cultural styles and traditional symbols to create elegant satires. Her ‘Hanafuda Sake Drinking Game Sets’ reflect a childhood tea party perspective of the darker adult world of drinking and gambling. Hanafuda translates as ‘flower cards’ and are colorful playing cards of Japanese origin. Once a refined game for nobility, Hanafuda became popular for gambling following the introduction of Portuguese missionaries. In 1633, this caused Japan to ban card playing and close off contact with the West. Clashes of East and West, of refined and sorted, and of traditional versus satiric fill the imagery and forms of Sekino-Bové’s art. She believes games are ritualized forms of play with complex rules and props that provide safe spaces to test boundaries and explore the more private aspects of personality. Save the Date! An Evening of Musical Interpretations with Metalsmiths Lisa & Scott Cylinder & Chatham Baroque [MaM102612] date & time: Friday October 26 6—8 pm
H artists: Lisa & Scott Cylinder, visiting from Oley, PA Join metalsmiths Lisa and Scott Cylinder and a great Pittsburgh treasure, Chatham Baroque, for a night of musical collaborations at SCC. Much like changing a piece of music from one key to another with historical reverence, the Cylinders transpose discarded musical instruments into exquisite, wearable jewelry. During the evening, they will talk about their artistic process and how their love of music has directed them to an exploration of musical instruments. A series of the couple’s works will be featured for sale in the SCC Store. Chatham Baroque, an ensemble of baroque violin, viola da gamba, theorbo and baroque guitar, will perform a concert as part of the program. With their dazzling technique and lively interpretations of 17th- and 18thcentury music played on period instruments, the ensemble offers the opportunity to hear baroque music that is accessible and thrillingly vivid. CLASS INFORMATION •S tudents who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation call within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.
MATERIALS Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, Materials Fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.
CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded by check. Refund Policy Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks. Weeklong Workshops Cancellations with 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a weeklong workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a weeklong class, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.
