c l ay Community Workshop: Painted Memories on Tiles Saturday, September 6 10 am­—5 pm instructor: Nicole Aquillano, SCC Artist-in-Residence level: all Be inspired by the architecture and urban charm of Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District! Students will reference recent and archival photos as they paint their impressions of the Strip onto pre-made tiles, forever memorializing this unique and vibrant neighborhood. Completed tiles will be fired and ready for pickup the following day. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

Have some studio experience under your belt? Use SCC’s studios to work on your own wood, metal, and mixed media craft projects. A variety of tools and equipment will be available during the four weekly sessions.

Weekend of Clay Saturday & Sunday October 25 & 26 10 am—5 pm H visiting artists: Lauren Mabry, Julie Moon, and Peter Morgan, Philadelphia, PA level: all Spend the weekend with three Transformation 9: Contemporary Works in Ceramics exhibition artists! Saturday’s workshop, led by Julie Moon, will focus on ceramic materials and processes to create jewelry and adornments for the body. A number of forming and finishing techniques will also be covered. On Sunday, Lauren Mabry will instruct students in the basics of painting with low fire colored slips and underglazes. The workshop will focus on achieving colorful, expressive surfaces through techniques such as brushing, slip trailing, and monoprinting on ceramic slabs. Peter Morgan will be on hand both days to demonstrate his hand-building and glazing techniques, as well as present his unique methods of working with Egyptian Paste. Tuition: $200 Materials: $50

5 Salt Water Etching

The Art of Tin Jewelry Making

Saturday & Sunday September 6 & 7 9 am—5 pm H visiting artist: Jesse Bert, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico level: intermediate Give extra depth to your jewelry with this non-toxic process. Salt water etching can be applied to any type of jewelry or small-scale sculpture. This workshop will primarily focus on brass and copper. Basic metals skills are recommended, but not required. Tuition: $200 Materials: $35

Saturday & Sunday November 8 & 9 10 am—5 pm H visiting artist: Marlene True, Columbia, NC level: intermediate Explore the unlimited possibilities of using repurposed materials in your metal projects. Students will learn to safely deconstruct tin cans and incorporate them into jewelry designs. Cutting, forming, soldering, and image transfer will be covered. Tuition: $200 Materials: $10

Enameled Earrings

Basic Metals Saturday & Sunday September 27 & 28 10 am—5 pm instructor: Samantha Skelton level: all Learn basic fabrication skills with former SCC Studio Apprentice Samantha Skelton. This intensive introduction to metalsmithing will provide students with the fundamentals necessary to enroll in any of the other metals workshops offered at SCC. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

Glass Decal Enameling on Steel Saturday & Sunday October 11 & 12 10 am—5 pm H visiting artist: Tara Locklear, Raleigh, NC level: intermediate Learn to make custom glass decals and fire them onto enameled steel shapes. Image manipulation and editing software will be covered. If students have a laptop computer, they are encouraged to bring it. Tuition: $200 Materials: $40

Saturday, November 22 10 am—4 pm instructor: Jenny Butterfield level: all Just in time for the holidays, make two to three pairs of enameled earrings to keep or give as gifts! Enameling techniques such as sifting, firing, sugar fire, and cloisonné will be covered. Tuition: $80 Materials: $15

Deck the Halls: Metal Ornaments Saturday, December 6 10 am—5 pm instructor: Jenny Butterfield level: all Explore faux bone and various color on metal techniques while decorating your own holiday ornaments. Easy & Fun Furniture Saturday & Sunday September 27 & 28 10 am—5 pm instructor: Jon Sutter level: all Construct a small contemporary table from inexpensive materials found in your local hardware store! Students will learn to safely use the table saw, drill press, and band saw. Proper drilling for screws and finishing options will also be discussed. Tuition: $160 Materials: $25

Wednesday, October 8 or Sunday, November 9 10 am—5 pm instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten level: all Create three bottle stoppers out of figured hardwoods as you learn the basics of woodturning. Bottle stoppers make great gifts and are a wonderful addition to your own kitchen. This workshop, which is suitable for woodturning beginners, will run two separate times; when registering please choose one of the two dates. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

Natural Edge Bowl Sunday, October 12 or Wednesday, October 15 10 am—5 pm instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten level: intermediate Make a unique wood turned bowl, complete with oil finish. Wood Turned Holiday Ornaments Saturday, December 6 10 am—5 pm instructor: Dave Beringer level: all Create a unique wooden holiday ornament as you learn woodturning skills on the lathe. Students will experiment with spindle turning to create globes and icicles and will finish their ornaments by adding some color. Tuition: $80 Materials: None. 7 Coptic Binding

Papermaking 101 Monday, September 22 10 am—5 pm instructor: Katy Dement level: all Try your hand at papermaking! This workshop covers all the basics, including: fiber variation, mould building, pulp processing, western sheet forming, embossing, watermarks, embellishing, wet-on-wet collage, drying, and pressing. Surface design and threedimensional structural options will also be discussed. Tuition: $80 Materials: $15

Paste Papers Saturday, October 4 10 am—5 pm instructor: Kitty Spangler level: all Decorative paste paper is a fun, fast, and easy way to make beautiful, handmade paper for use in book arts, special wrapping paper, cards, boxes, and more. This workshop is a must for color lovers and those who enjoy visual texture, strong or subtle. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

Sunday, October 19 10 am—5 pm instructor: Kitty Spangler level: all The Coptic bookbinding technique is perfect for hand-bound sketchbooks and journals. This stitching style allows the book to be opened flat anywhere within its pages. Students will take home a beautifully finished book for personal use or to give as a unique handmade gift. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

Plants to Paper Saturday & Sunday November 8 & 9 9 am—4 pm instructor: Katy Dement level: all Learn traditional Eastern papermaking while processing and beating plant fibers from the kitchen, yard, garden, and roadside. In this two-day workshop, students will collect various plants, including Japanese Knot weed, and experiment with processing the fibers. The dry sheets will be bound into a simple recipe book. Tuition: $160 Materials: $25

Saturday, September 13 10 am—5 pm H visiting artist: Dena Gershon, Kent, OH level: all No matter if you're already a dedicated fiber enthusiast or someone who loves color and is interested in trying something new, this one-day workshop will provide you with the experience to safely create luscious handdyed fiber. Students will work with protein fibers, using fine materials such as merino wool and silk in a variety of forms. The workshop is suited for a wide variety of fiber artists, including spinners, felters, and knitters. Tuition: $100 Materials: $45

Sunday, September 14 10 am—5 pm H visiting artist: Dena Gershon, Kent, OH level: all Create a unique work of wearable art using one of the earliest known textile techniques—felting. Laminated felt (Nuno felt) is a variation of wet-felting in which wool’s natural tendencies are explored to the fullest. Students will create luxurious lightweight fabric that drapes beautifully and has virtually limitless textural and design possibilities. Tuition: $100 Materials: $40

Shibori Scarves Saturday, November 1 10 am—4 pm instructor: Amy DiPlacido level: all Add some fashion to your winter apparel with a Shibori scarf! Shibori is a Japanese method of dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, and compressing. This workshop will introduce students to immersion dyeing with dyes on silk. Each student will dye a silk scarf in the arashi shibori method, which translates to "wind driven rain." Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

Needle Felted Ornaments Saturday, December 6 10 am—5 pm instructor: Susan Swarthout level: all Learn to sculpt with wool! Using needles that grab fibers and tangle them together into felted shapes, students will craft small, soft three-dimensional ornaments using beautifully dyed wool. Tuition: $45 Materials: $15

H Dena’s workshops are co-sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. Students that register for both days will be able to use the hand-dyed materials from Saturday’s workshop in the creation of their laminated felt piece during Sunday’s workshop. 9 Luminescent Backlit Sculptures Sunday, September 21 9 am—5 pm instructor: Wanda Spangler-Warren level: all Create a luminous backlit sculpture to hang on your wall. Students will learn to use the properties of natural reed to create an armature over which they will form translucent, layered paper surfaces for their sculptures. Tuition: $80 Materials: $30

Polymer Clay: Hollow Form Vessels Saturday, November 1 10 am—5 pm instructor: Laura Tabakman level: intermediate Learn to make a hollow form in polymer clay! Students will make moulds and produce the inside layer of hollow beads, pendants, or vessels. Different closing mechanisms will be explored. Surface design and finishing techniques will also be taught. This workshop is best suited for students with some experience in polymer clay. Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

Wire Crochet Bracelet Thursday, November 6 11 am—3 pm instructor: Judith Gentile level: all Create an eye-catching bracelet of glass beads and natural stones. After stringing hand-selected beads onto wire, students will crochet an attractive piece of jewelry using a basic stitch. A kit containing a crochet hook, wire, beads, and natural stones will be provided. Tuition: $60 Materials: $25

Free-form Wire Crochet Bracelet Thursday, November 13 11 am—3 pm instructor: Judith Gentile level: intermediate Crochet a one-of-a-kind bracelet combining a variety of different stitches. A kit containing a crochet hook, wire, beads, and natural stones will be provided. Some crochet experience is required. Tuition: $60 Materials: $25

Funky Photo Jewelry Saturday, November 22 10 am—4 pm instructor: Gerry Florida level: all Learn to think "quirky" alongside jewelry artist Gerry Florida. Students will assemble “wearable portraits” from a variety of found objects and sentimental mementos, including old photos, collectibles, and vintage and contemporary knick-knacks. Final projects can take the form of a brooch, necklace, pendant, or small wall piece. The possibilities are endless! Tuition: $80 Materials: A supply list will be provided. Additional supplies can be purchased from the instructor.

Special Glass Series instructor: Darlene Durrwachter-Rushing Discover the ancient art of flameworking while making beads from hot glass. During this special glass series, students may choose to take one or several workshops covering a wide variety of techniques in glass beadmaking. Tuition: Introduction to Glass Beads on the Torch and the four subsequent beading workshops can be purchased as a package for $250, or for $60 per session. The introductory class is a prerequisite for Darlene’s other glass bead workshops. Materials: $25 per workshop

Thursday, October 2 9 am—12 pm level: all Explore the exciting medium of flameworked hot glass beadmaking using a portable “Hot Head” torch and Italian glass rods. Students will learn the fundamentals of working with a torch and will make three to six solid-colored glass beads on a mandrel. This class is a prerequisite for Darlene’s other glass bead workshops.

Just Fritting Around Thursday, October 16 9 am—12 pm level: intermediate Learn to add small glass shards to create depth of color in your glass creations. Students will take home four to eight beads.

Let’s Do the Twist Thursday, October 30 9 am—12 pm level: intermediate Twist and shape two glass rods together to create unique decorations for your glass bead creations. Students will take home four to eight beads.

Adjustable Rings Friday, October 17 6—9 pm instructor: Anya Weitzman level: all Make your own adjustable, wearable ring in this simple introduction to metalworking. Holiday Tin Can Wreaths Friday, November 14 6—9 pm instructor: Drew Sokol level: all Repurpose beer and soda cans to create a beautiful holiday wreath! There will be a variety of cans on hand, so that no matter which holiday you celebrate, you’ll be able to decorate in DIY style. CLASS INFORMATION

• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

MATERIALS

Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded. Refund Policy: 1-2 Day Workshops Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks. 3-5 Day Workshops Cancellations with 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a three-, four- or five-day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a three-, four- or five-day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

One-on-One & Studio Rentals

Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
