Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) was founded in 1971 by Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael in the belief that contemporary artists had new things to say with traditional materials, and that they needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Since then, SCC has organized more than 235 exhibitions, created strong educational and community outreach programs, established a satellite gallery and a permanent

Saturday, November 14 12—5 pm H visiting artist: Ehren Tool level: all Do you or someone you know serve in the Armed Forces? Join visiting artist Ehren Tool in an intimate exploration of war, peace, memory, and clay. Workshop participants are invited to e-mail us a personal image of war, propaganda, or something meaningful from your service. During the workshop, Ehren will discuss his artistic process while applying your image to a uniquely crafted cup for you to keep. A former U.S. Marine, Ehren is currently producing work related to war and PTSD. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Mindful: Exploring Mental Health Through Art. Tuition: $80 (includes cup)

Beer Steins Saturday, November 21 10 am—5 pm instructor: Yoko Sekino-Bove level: all Using low-fire white clay and soft-slab construction techniques, students will create a one-of-a-kind ceramic beer stein. The steins can be personalized with stamps, underglaze painting, and other texturing techniques. Tuition: $120 Materials: Included in the tuition fee

Plates & Platters Saturday & Sunday December 12 & 13 10 am—4 pm instructor: Margaret Haden level: all Create tableware using tarpaper stencils and drape molds. The works will be decorated with underglaze to create layered surfaces and then dipped in clear glaze. Tuition: $200 Materials: Included in the tuition fee

Paper Lanterns

Wednesday, September 9 6—9 pm instructors: Katy Dement & Albert Pantone level: all Learn the basics of paper making by sheet forming with recycled cotton and wood pulp fibers. An introduction to surface design with inclusions of wet embossed textures will be included. Tuition: $45 Materials: $10

Saturday & Sunday October 24 & 25 10 am—2 pm instructor: Katy Dement level: all Create a paper lantern to embellish, mount, light, and display! Lanterns will be constructed from a variety of plants, pulps, fibers, and recycled papers. The finished paper sculptures will be easy to hang using cane, wire, and twine. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

Meditative Paper Cutting N Saturday, September 19 10 am—12:30 pm instructor: Gianna Paniaqua level: all Find healing and learn meditative techniques through the art of paper cutting. Be transported to a peaceful state that allows for reflection and relaxation, while mastering paper cutting basics and creating artwork that incorporates repetitive imagery. Each student will create a paper milagro, or a physical representation of an intention they have for themselves or a loved one. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Mindful: Exploring Mental Health Through Art. Tuition: $35 Materials: $10

Paper From Plants: Western Style Wednesday, October 14 6—9 pm instructors: Katy Dement & Albert Pantone level: all Turn weeds into paper! Participants will be immersed in the serendipitous and scientific process of making paper by hand and forming paper from plants. The workshop will focus on invasive species including Japanese knot weed. Tuition: $45 Materials: $10

2D Relief Paper Clay Wednesday, November 11 6—9 pm instructors: Katy Dement & Albert Pantone level: all Form textured slab constructions from a fibrous blend of clay and paper. The mixed media works will be embellished with relief printing blocks and natural additions. Tuition: $45 Materials: $10

Holiday Cards Wednesday, December 9 6—9 pm instructor: Katy Dement level: all Make a selection of unique holiday cards and gifts. Vintage ephemera and natural plant materials will be used to illustrate in wet on wet collage. Tuition: $35 Materials: $10

Pushing Past The Limits with Cold Connections

Saturday & Sunday September 5 & 6 10 am—5 pm H visiting artists: Gabriel Craig & Amy Weiks level: intermediate Learn the basics of surface embellishment techniques perfect for tightly controlled linear and gestural effects. Chasing, stamping, scribing, hammer engraving, and solder inlay will be covered. Students will have time to make several samples, in addition to learning how to use some of the specialty tools featured in the workshop. Gabriel and Amy are joining us from Smith Shop, a Detroit metalworking studio described by Dwell magazine as being on the forefront of the craft renaissance. Don't miss this unique opportunity to work with the artists behind this exciting movement! Tuition: $200 Materials: $50

Saturday & Sunday October 3 & 4 10 am—5 pm H visiting artist: Casey Sheppard level: all Play with metal and design in this cold connections workshop. Students will create a hinged bracelet out of sheet metal, all without picking up a torch. Other techniques, such as tube rivets, metal/wire forming, and finishing details with oxidization, will be covered. This workshop is part of Casey's "Case of the Nomads" project, a year-long journey across the U.S. connecting communities through craft. Tuition: $200 Materials: $40

Saturday & Sunday September 12 & 13 10 am—5 pm instructor: Katie Rearick level: all Learn to make hollow, volumetric forms in metal using the hydraulic press. Students will use the die-forming process to produce a pendant or small wearable vessel. Learn the basics of sawing, filing, annealing, soldering, and forming. Surface design and finishing techniques will also be covered. Tuition: $160 Materials: $30

Open Studios Intro to Enameling Saturday, November 7 10 am—5 pm instructor: Jenny Soracco level: all Add color and pattern to metal jewelry with enameling! Students will learn to fuse glass enamels to metal and experiment with a variety of surface effects and layering techniques. Each student will produce an enameled box, earrings, or necklace. Jewelry Edition: Professional Practices Saturday, December 5 10 am—5 pm H visiting artists: Kat Cole & Laura Wood level: all Jewelry Edition is a web based exhibition and pop-up experience showcasing the work of emerging and early career jewelry artists. The diversity of the jewelry field grows larger and more exciting by the day! Join us in the SCC Studio to learn more about this new platform, including information about the contemporary jewelry field and professional practices. Topics include social media presence, pricing, retail shows, gallery relationships, branding, and networking. Students are encouraged to bring in their own work for portfolio reviews. Tuition: $100

Hula-Hoop Rag Rug Time Saturday & Sunday September 12 & 13 10 am—5 pm instructor: Amy Masters level: all Learn a fun and easy way to repurpose old fabrics during this two-day hula-hoop rag rug workshop. Students will learn to weave in the round while exploring pattern making through various color combinations. The instructor, Amy Masters, uses fiber-based sculpture and installation to examine play. She recently created the world’s largest (maybe) rag rug at Arrowmont! Tuition: $160 Materials: $15

 Discover the Bojagi, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth, as you become acquainted with its history and usage in Korean society. Working side-by-side with Chunghie Lee, an internationally renowned fiber artist, students will learn the basic techniques in Bojagi making and create a one-of-a-kind body ornament as their final project. Co-sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh.

Introduction to Tapestry Weaving Saturday, October 17 10 am—5 pm instructor: Leigh Koegler level: all Get started on your weaving journey by learning basic tapestry techniques on a wooden frame loom. In this workshop, you will create a custom tapestry piece using hand dyed, vintage, and reclaimed yarns. Students will receive a complete weaving kit, which will include their own frame loom to take home with them to continue their tapestry creations. Tuition: $80 Materials: $55

The Stitched Canvas N Saturday & Sunday November 7 & 8 10 am­—5 pm H visiting artist: Jennifer Reis level: all Discover the potential of textile, transfer, and painting techniques to make mixed media paintings, collages, and assemblages. Using pre-stretched canvases, master image transfer on fabric with gel medium and experiment with acrylic paint to create designs and dyes on fabric. Saturday, November 14 10 am—5 pm instructor: Lauren Jonkman level: all Learn and practice several improvisational techniques to make modern quilts. Experiment with making improvised "slabs" and work with curved pieces to modernize traditional quilt blocks. You will take home a completed set of placemats, a table runner, or a wall hanging. Saturday, December 19 10 am—5 pm instructor: Jennifer Moss level: all Learn the basics of wet felting while creating a pair of slippers or mittens to keep for yourself or give as a gift. Students will layer soft, colorful wool around custom made plastic patterns to make comfy, seamless mittens or slippers. Surface designs will also be covered. No knitting or sewing required! The Art of Assemblage

Saturday, October 10 10 am—5 pm instructor: Laura Tabakman level: all Explore the subtle beauty of translucent polymer clay. The semitransparent quality of this material can be utilized to add depth to your work, or be finished to a glass-like surface. Take advantage of these properties during the workshop to create translucentbased canes and assemble them into jewelry. Tuition: $80 Materials: $20

Art journaling is about exploring emotions and thoughts, both written and visual. Your altered book is a place for feelings that may not otherwise have a home. CLASS INFORMATION

•S tudents who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

MATERIALS

Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded. Refund Policy: 1-2 Day Workshops Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks. 3-5 Day Workshops Cancellations with 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a three-, four- or five-day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a three-, four- or five-day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALS

Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
