Hello Ealing Broadway glam Marks and Spencer, Next, H&M, River Island, Monsoon – these are the kinds of shops adding a bit of glamour to Ealing Broadway W5. According to our Vox Pop (p4), clothing is one of the top reasons for shopping in Ealing Broadway. So is food – the centre of Ealing boasts the proverbial “tempting array of eating choices”. Another kind of business majoring in the area, thanks to Crossrail and the local property boom, is real estate agents. Find out more in our “Get to Know Your Ealing Estate Agents”, p7-9. And of course our Ealing Homebiz section, highlighting services you may not even have known existed in the borough, starts on p15. Welcome to this May-June-July issue. Thanks for “shopping” by. Liz’s agency back on The Broadway

NEWS NIBS

A

fter over a year operating out of her Acton showroom, Ealing entrepreneur Liz Pilgrim is back in offices in Ealing Broadway. She has no plans just yet to re-open (“but never say never!”) the babye shop that she’s probably best known for, that was attacked on The Green during the 2011 Ealing Riots, and which thrust her into the national limelight. Her business has evolved since then – from a retail focus into babyagency. She now represents maternity and baby brands like Boob, out of Sweden, and Babylonia, a Belgian brand. “I had a really gorgeous showroom in Warple Way, Having a coffee with Liz Pilgrim at Acton,” she says. “But I was finding customers preferred me Angela Malik’s Modern Asian Deli, newly opened on The Green. to go and visit them. So I made the decision to come back and have offices in Saunders House. “Plus I was really missing Ealing,” she adds. Ever the entrepreneur (she was selling Ralph Lauren baby clothes online before Ralph Lauren even had an e-commerce website), she also spends a lot of time training and mentoring. The inspiration for ‘Contactus Ealing’ magazine came from seeing the damage to Green Mango Cafe on The Green, Ealing Broadway, after the Ealing Riots of August 2011. Now properly back on his feet, owner Zak Hussein is planning “more colour” for the restaurant, including a new window design, hand-painted furniture straight from Pakistan (like the screen in the photo), and a summer menu “full of salads, all fresh – and some including mango”, he says.

Gallery on Bond Street The art community in Ealing has welcomed the new purpose-built exhibition space at For Arts Sake at 43 Bond Street, which effectively creates a ‘West End gallery in West London’ as envisioned by business owners Brian and Melanie Davis. For Arts Sake has been a pillar of Ealing’s commercial and cultural community for 30 years and was given the confidence to open the new space with the advent of the exciting planned local developments such as Crossrail and the cinema/ YMCA project on the near horizon. www.forartssake.com

Chat&Meet with Gita The cafe that was piloted in the OPEN Ealing space on West Drayton Road, West Ealing, was the brainchild of Arizion coach and mentor, Gita Langston. New venue coming soon. (We vouch for the amazing hot choc.)

grew up in Southall, so I know the Ealing area very well,” says Kulwinder “Nick” Bath, who owns the Mail Boxes Etc. franchise on Spring Bridge Road in Ealing Broadway. And even though he now lives in Hayes, Nick prefers to run his business in Ealing because of the ever-expanding opportunities here. He looks up at the Dickens Yard cranes, and the scaffolding across the road on the Arcadia Centre. “I’m hoping that once all the building work is finished, and Crossrail comes, that it will bring in even more business,” he says. Nick has both business and residential customers who use the postal mail service (Royal Mail picks up post from

him every day), and who send parcels overseas. But his business customer base is growing fast, especially because of the worldwide parcel and express document delivery, and the secure 24-hour access mail boxes. “These rented mail boxes are useful for people working from home,” Nick says. “It’s good for a business’s image to have a high street W5 mailing address, rather than using your home address.” Nick has spent over 20 years in the courier industry and is convinced that “the service at Mail Boxes Etc. is so good, the customers come back”. TIPS FOR A LANDLORD Colin Bibra Estate Agents owner, John Bishop, has some advice for anyone thinking about joining the buy-to-let industry: 1. Location. Be sure to choose the right property in the right place. Somewhere you’d live yourself. 2. Think small. You don’t have to go for a fivebedroom house. A studio flat can give you much better return. Contributed

f you wanted to know what kind of company Colin Bibra Estate Agents is, you could read their website, where it says: “It is a little-known fact that Colin Bibra’s first managed property was ‘Cherry Pye’ in Drayton Green Road; it is rumoured that they offer generous staff discounts.” Light-hearted moments can come in handy when you’re trying to find a property. It also helps to know that Colin Bibra is one of the oldest independent estate agents in Ealing, and that they’re exclusively Ealing, with two offices – one on Northfield Avenue and the other at The Mall in Ealing Broadway. John Bishop, who owns the company, is an Ealing character himself. Coming from

3. Patience. Be prepared to wait for the right tenant.

4. Stress. Or not. Tenants changing, neighbours complaining. Can you cope with it? 5. Don’t go it alone. Colin Bibra is here to help.

Real-time ultrasound scanning W5 Physio now offers our patients real-time ultrasound scanning to assist in the diagnosis and management of their musculoskeletal injuries, at no extra cost. It allows us to clearly show the initial injury, which is great for confirming the diagnosis. Then during each follow-up treatment session, we re-scan the injury to show the patient the formation of new muscle fibres as we help heal the muscle, then progressively strengthen it to result in a full recovery.

Photos show the scanner in use, plus a scan of a calf muscle tear. The tear of the muscle fibres creates the black oval shaped ‘hole’ in the middle. The blackness is blood within the muscle as a result of the tear. If you have any questions about the ultrasound scanner at W5 Physio, its uses or treatment options, feel free to give us a call.

he Commonwealth Games run from July 23 to August 3, but it will be the key days of the Triathlon event on July 25 and 26 where “our man in Glasgow”, W5 Physio’s Greg Bagley, will come into his element. An accomplished triathlete himself, having finished in the top 20 per cent in the Dorney Lake Triathlon Series 2009, Greg will be “representing” Ealing businesses at the Games in his role as lead physio for the triathlon event – that’s the one where sportsmen and women compete in a challenging combination of swimming, cycling and running. The advantage of having been a triathlon athlete himself stands Greg in good stead: “I understand the demands of the sport: it hurts, everything hurts,” he says. Not only does he know first-hand what the athletes will need from him as their physiotherapist, but he’s helped swimmers, cyclists and runners at his W5 Physio practice in Haven Lane, just north of Ealing Broadway station. Hello Keeping in touch Since our February edition, a couple of exciting things have happened on the local social media scene which is good news for Ealing small businesses. First of all we got the #EalingHour on Twitter thanks to @Northfieldslive (see page 9), which was frantic from the word go – a fantastic way to reach the local online audience. Second, we started a group on Facebook under the title ‘Businesses in Ealing Contactus’ (see ad on opposite page) so we could build up the local business community over there as well. You’ll see we’ve shelved the double-cover idea for now (feedback was an even split, honestly), but still tried to give the ‘Ealing Homebiz’ section some extra exposure. Thanks for “shopping by”. t’s 6am and my alarm goes off, I jump in the shower and get ready pronto! I check my Twitter, Facebook and email messages whilst consuming honey granola and a Nespresso double macchiato. Pop-up a success

T

he Smashing Glass pop-up shop in West Ealing in March was so well received that the organisers are keen to build on its success, and maybe open a permanent outlet in Ealing. “This opportunity was great to show it could be done,” says art teacher Maire Gartland. “It fills the children with confidence.” The fused glass products are made by young people with learning difficulties from Belvue School, Northolt. Students Karan and Zain have gained useful experience from running the pop-up shop. Both say they would love to open their own mechanics shop one day. “I used to be shy,” says Zain. “Now I’m more confident.” www.smashingglass.org.uk

Challenge to lose My story so far – by Charity Wright

I

am a busy mum of two running my own childcare business as well as studying in my third and final year at Kingston University. In November last year, I decided to lose weight after being challenged by my friend to lose at least 10lbs in 90 days. Initially I was doubtful. However, I decided to give it a go. I stepped out of my comfort zone and accepted the Challenge. I set a goal to lose 20lbs, and promised myself that if I was successful I would share it with everyone who might have a similar goal to mine. Hence I am an independent promoter of Body By Vi. To me losing weight means that I can be actively involved in family activities, look and feel great and be more confident. My other goal is to get fit and eventually participate in a 5k run. After the 90 days, I am proud to say I lost 14.4lbs – 6.5kg. This is just the beginning. See Body By Vi ad at right http://acrewright.bodybyvi.com

All in the plan Raksha Kukadia explains that the Slimtuition weight loss plan works by tailoring a plan to suit the client and his or her lifestyle

S

limtuition does what it says on the tin. There are two main elements: (i) replace some or all of your meals with delicious and nutritional meal packs; (ii) attend a weekly coaching session which provides structure and support from your specially trained coach and other clients going through a similar journey. Here are three examples of Slimtuition plans: • ‘Boot Camp’ plan: Four replacement packs plus a plate of salad each day, providing you with 100 per cent nutrition and energy. • ‘Meal A Day’ plan: Three meal replacement packs and one healthy meal of protein, vegetables, diary and fruit each day. • ‘The Downsizer’: A fast track plan to drop a clothes size in just four weeks, so you can be ready for that special event you are looking forward to. Getting to grips with Pinterest

The Internet is a wonderful thing to help people find our businesses and for us to find an array of useful information to help us develop ourselves, our business and our homes! But hold on a minute, how and where do I store all this great info so it’s easy to access as and when you want to, as well as helping others locate it too? Hello Pinterest! If you don’t know what it is, think of it like one huge pin board where you can pin anything and everything that you come across whilst on the Web. No need to worry about remembering which website was great for design, infographics or inspiration; just pin the images to your boards from the original website (this goes for your own images/website too).
