ON THE COVER Masterpiece unveils the long-awaited adaptation of one of the longest and most engaging novels ever written when the sixpart Les Misérables premieres April 14. The first English translation of Les Misérables in 1862 left the French title (meaning “the wretched” or “the dispossessed”) in place. And so it has been known in English ever since, through countless printed editions, plays, musicals, and movies. Writing in 2017, Princeton University scholar and translator David Bellos put Victor Hugo’s masterpiece in context. “Among all the gifts France has given to Hollywood, Broadway and the common reader…, Les Misérables stands out as the greatest by far.” But - as LeVar Burton used to say on Reading Rainbow - you don’t have to take his word for it. We invite you to watch each week and judge for yourself. kmos.org

American Spring LIVE! on Nature April 29, 30 and May 1 at 7 p.m.

Spring is one of nature’s greatest performances – a time of rebirth, renewed energy and dramatic transformations. News anchor Juju Chang will host the multi-platform event from Yosemite National Park, with on-camera experts, including author and biologist Thor Hanson Buzz: The Nature and Necessity of Bees, showing springtime phenomena in various locations across the country, in ecosystems ranging from the Rockies to the Everglades, from inner-city parks to remote wilderness preserves. The series will include a mix of live and pre-taped footage highlighting some of the most pivotal events in nature’s calendar. A diverse group of researchers and citizen scientists will investigate how a wide range of organisms respond to the change of seasons. They will share their insights into the natural world, reveal new technologies that make their discoveries possible and encourage audiences to join the adventure of science. To encourage citizen science participation, Nature: American Spring LIVE has partnered with the Celebrate Urban Birds and Bird Cams projects (Cornell Lab of Ornithology), The Great Sunflower Project (San Francisco State Univ.), The Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (Univ. of Minnesota Monarch Lab), Tracka-Lilac with Nature’s Notebook (USA National Phenology Photos: Broad-tailed hummingbird on Mt. Reconstruction: America After the Civil War April 9 and 16 at 8 p.m.

Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The New York Public Library

A new film from Henry Louis Gates, Jr (Finding Your Roots, African American Lives), takes a broad view of the Reconstruction era and its aftermath, beginning with the hopeful moment of war’s end and emancipation in 1865, and carrying through to 1915, when the nation was fully entrenched in Jim Crow segregation. In the aftermath of the Civil War, the nation was devastated by death and destruction. Members of the U.S. Congress endeavored to reunite North and South while granting citizenship rights to newly freed African Americans. Millions of former slaves and free black people sought out their rightful place as equal citizens under the law. The dream of an interracial democracy was brief, and the broken promises of the Reconstruction era haunt the country to this day. Though tragically short-lived, this bold democratic experiment was, in the words of W. E. B. Du Bois, a “brief moment in the sun” for African Americans, when they could advance and achieve education, exercise their right to vote, and run for and win public office, as did Benjamin S. Turner (pictured top left), an ex-slave and one of the first African Americans elected to the United States Congress. The first half of the documentary centers on the pivotal decade following the Civil War rebellion, charting black progress and highlighting the accomplishments of the many political leaders who emerged to usher their communities into this new era of freedom. The series’ second half looks beyond that hopeful decade, when the arc of history bent backwards. Tracing the unraveling of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow segregation in the closing years of the 19th century, the film also look at the myriad ways in which black people like Ida B. Wells (center) continued to acquire land, build institutions and strengthen communities amidst increasing racial violence and repression. The film also introduces African American artists like Bert Williams and George Walker (bottom), and explores the art, music, literature and culture as tools of resistance in the struggle against Jim Crow racism, and the surge of political activism that marked the launch of iconic civil rights organizations. 8

Les Misérables on Masterpiece

Begins April 14 at 8 p.m.

A blockbuster novel for over 150 years comes vividly to life in award-winning screenwriter Andrew Davies’ multi-layered retelling of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. Dominic West (pictured below, left) stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo (below, right) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Lily Collins (right) appears as the tragic seamstress, Fantine; Ellie Bamber plays her adolescent daughter, Cosette; Olivia Colman and Adeel Akhtar are Cosette’s cruel overseers, the Thénardiers; and Josh O’Connor is the student and reluctant revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette at first sight. One of the longest and most engaging novels ever written, with a plot that is as relevant today as in the socially tumultuous 19th century, Les Misérables is a challenging story to condense. But Masterpiece veteran screenwriter Davies (Pride & Prejudice, Bleak House) preserves Hugo’s intricate plotting, striking historical vignettes, powerful themes, and evocative characterizations, producing an epic television experience that is worthy of the original novel. Les Misérables opens after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, which saw Napoleon’s final defeat by the English and their allies. The French monarchy is restored - and the thwarted ideals of the republic go underground. Valjean had served a sentence of hard labor for stealing bread, but on his release he resorts to petty crime, risking re-arrest and a life sentence - a fate deemed a virtual certainty by his former jailer Javert. Under a new name in a provincial town, Valjean prospers as a businessman and mayor. He gives work to a needy young woman, Fantine, who hides the fact that she is the unwed mother of a child named Cosette. As the plot unfolds, the stories of mother and daughter become inextricably entwined with that of the fugitive and with an abusive innkeeping couple who become Cosette’s guardians. Two of their children, Éponine and Gavroche Thénardier, go on to play heroic roles in the Paris Uprising of 1832, which is led by the romantic idealist Enjolras. The story reaches its climax during the uprising and features an iconic escape scene through the sewers of Paris, which made the underground tunnels one of the most famous engineering marvels in the world. kmos.org
