The M8/M73/M74 BIM Revolution

Industry Leading Global BIM Innovation on Multinational Data Centre Campus

Entry by Cillian Kelly, John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd. The €600M M8/M73/M74 Motorway Improvements (M8) Project is a major transport infrastructure scheme. It completes the M8 motorway link between the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and provides key upgrades to sections of the M73 and M74. Ferrovial/Lagan/Amey/ RPS is collectively responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation and maintenance of the project on behalf of the Scottish Roads Partnership. The scheme comprises a new 12km dual three-lane M8 motorway section between Baillieston and Newhouse and upgrades to 16km of the existing motorway network. The upgrades include widening for additional lanes and significant new works and alterations to existing motorway interchanges at Raith (M74/A725) and Baillieston (M8/M73). The Raith Interchange is one of the largest interchanges on the project. Works here include the construction of a new 600m long and 12m deep underpass, construction of a realigned Raith Roundabout; three new bridges; two new pedestrian footbridges; pier protection at two existing bridge structures, five signalised junctions and numerous other off-line works such as flood alleviation storage ponds. The junction remains live to traffic during the works. Due to construction programme pressures, it was deemed impractical to change strategy to adopt BIM as the core approach for the entire project, however potential was identified to apply BIM to the Raith Interchange. The project team have to-date produced a fully co-ordinated and federated BIM model of the alignment, structures, drainage, utilities, temporary works, signage, road markings and lighting. The construction phase is due for completion in 2017. We are extending the BIM process from the design stage through the construction phase, creating lifecycle engagement and enriching the model with data to make it more useful for future maintenance and operation.

The development of a large Data Centre campus has been awarded to John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd. as General Contractor (GC) by a multinational client. Sisk have won this work as the preferred contractor by delivering several other data centre projects for this client safely, on time and exceeding the high standard of quality expected. RPS Lyrr 2, IDA Business and Technology Park, Mervue, Galway.

The BIM Innovation on this multinational data centre project is it’s designation by the client as the pilot scheme project of good BIM practice for any future data centre projects internationally. It will be used as a benchmark project to record benefits and successful practices resulting in efficiencies in the full life-cycle of the facility from design thru to construction and finally in operations/handover.

A significant element of this initiative is that the whole project team are working together through the use of a Common Data Environment and BIM platform in a Collaborative Environment on site (BIM Hub). This project will also focus on understanding and meeting the Client’s end user requirements through a process of “beginning with the end in mind”. This approach will ensure information can be used and re-used effectively throughout the project and life of the asset.

The benefits already identified through this initiative include a significant reduction of RFI’s on the project largely due to the collaborative BIM process. Working together in the BIM Hub environment increases the speed and effectiveness in tresolving site issues. Centralised project information offers efficiencies in design and construction phases with future wider opportunities to improve facilities management systems.
