Breaking Barriers

Earlier this month, Logistics News ME was in Riyadh to host its annual Logistics & Transport KSA Awards 2024; I remember walking out of the Riyadh Airport and feeling a different shift in the energy in the air. I saw a tremendous thirst and energy from the Kingdom-based companies even earlier when we began preparing for the awards. The large-scale

projects, corporate transformations, and numerous development initiatives driving the nation to achieve greater heights indicate that the country is prepared to take the lead.

Having said that, picture yourself living a life that is precisely the same. Any energy from a person or an idea gives you a solid push to push yourself to greater heights. This will need to make someone more nimble and focused. I consider myself to be a big "energy" person. If someone gives me positive vibes, I'm always eager to chat with them or even spend some time getting to know them better.

In addition, the majority of us prefer a positive atmosphere these days. I am eager to be in a surreal setting after a demanding workday. Do you also?

I was honoured and thrilled to put this issue together because it characteristics some incredible interviews with some of the most brilliant female rock stars in the business. Finally, just as importantly, we would like to congratulate all the Logistics & Transport KSA Awards 2024 winners!

SAUDIA CARGO, WFS, AND CAINIAO GROUP LAUNCH COLLABORATION IN LIEGE

Saudia Cargo, Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a Member of the SATS Group, and Cainiao Group have officially launched their strategic collaboration at Cainiao’s Liege eHub in Liege Airport, Belgium, further solidifying their longstanding partnership. The collaboration aims to optimize logistics processes through operational streamlining and the adoption of logistics innovations.

An inauguration ceremony was held today at the airside of the eHub, currently leased by WFS. Cainiao invested in logistics procedures, facilities, and innovations, demonstrating a commitment to delivering the best quality service solutions to clients and partners. WFS, in close collaboration with Cainiao, operates within the air cargo station.

Since November 2021, Cainiao and WFS have worked together to enhance operational quality for joint partners like Saudia Cargo. Key service level agreement commitments include a 3-hour e-commerce transit, BUP release within 3 hours from ATA, and truck handling in less than 90 minutes.

The collaboration has also bolstered the eHub’s logistics capacity, with three temperature-controlled facilities jointly designed by the three parties. These include areas for loose 2-8°C (205 sqm), BUP 2-8°C (140 sqm), and loose 15-25°C (400 sqm), supporting the transportation

of perishable and pharma cargo products. Additionally, the eHub has obtained BCP certification, enabling the transport of fresh goods and further enhancing its capacity to facilitate cross-border trade.

This initiative addresses the growing demand for highquality logistics operations in cross-border e-commerce, particularly in the Middle East and European markets. Earlier this year, Cainiao launched its international express shipping service, Global 5-Day Delivery, in collaboration with AliExpress, which is now available in ten countries worldwide.

The collaboration between Saudia Cargo and Cainiao includes specific freighter flights from Hong Kong to Riyadh and Liege, strategically tailored to meet the increasing logistics demands in these critical regions and enhance e-commerce delivery efficiency. Furthermore, the contract extension to WFS for handling over 50,000 tonnes annually on flights connecting Liege and Riyadh underscores Saudia Cargo’s ambition for operational excellence and reliable logistics services.

WFS’s investment in subleasing part of the Cainiao facility in Liege illustrates its commitment to innovation and efficiency, creating a dedicated area for swift and real-time information processing. Integrating innovative technology solutions, including AGVs, advanced PDAs, digital dashboards, and live tracking systems, supports a new generation of cargo.

JAFZA BOOSTS INDIA-UAE TRADE AS SECOND CEPA ANNIVERSARY APPROACHES

Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) is emerging as the powerhouse driving the unprecedented growth of IndiaUAE trade, with a 28% year-on-year surge in new Indian businesses setting up in the trade and logistics hub. DP World’s flagship economic zone saw 190 new Indian companies established in 2023, bringing the total number of Indian businesses in Jafza up by 15% year over year to over 1,500.

The surge in customers was announced following a series of Jafza trade events in Mumbai and Hyderabad, which were coordinated with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the UAE-India Business Council (UIBC). Bharat Mart, whose foundation stone was laid in February 2024 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took the spotlight at the events.

Scheduled to open in 2026, Bharat Mart will allow Indian traders to reach local and international customers in the Middle East, Africa and Europe by providing comprehensive supply chain solutions that integrate retail, warehousing, and logistics services into one streamlined operation. The project has generated nearly 3,000 business leads in less than one month.

Abdulla Al Hashmi, Chief Operating Officer, Parks & Zones at DP World GCC, elaborated on the platform’s potential impact: “We’ve received overwhelming interest from Indian businesses keen to establish a presence in Jafza and leverage our world-class infrastructure, network, and market access. We will continue revolutionising trade with Bharat Mart, opening new pathways that strengthen economic partnerships and facilitate seamless global commerce.”

The gathering also shed light on the flourishing trade ties between the UAE and India since the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was inked in May 2022. The landmark agreement eliminated tariffs for Indian traders, creating an open and efficient environment for crossborder trade.

As a testament to the agreement’s success, bilateral non-oil trade between the UAE and India reached $50.5 billion in the first year of CEPA, a 5.8% annual increase. The goal is to boost non-oil trade to $100 billion by 2030.

The CEPA’s effectiveness is boosted by DP World’s India-UAE Trade Bridge initiative launched in 2019, which streamlines shipping between the two nations, reducing costs and time

and generating new business opportunities in sectors like manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare.

Al Hashmi added: “Despite the ongoing challenges in the international trade network, our collaborative initiatives with India have led to a notable increase in trade between our two nations. Jafza has been key to this success, and our focus now is on sustaining this growth by empowering Indian businesses and promoting a strong trade ecosystem, reinforcing our commitment to economic prosperity.”

Jafza currently serves over 10,000 companies from 130 countries, with 87% of the UAE’s non-oil trade with India coming through Dubai. Indian companies represent the second largest partners in terms of trade volume and are fourth in terms of trade value at Jafza.

Jafza links businesses to Jebel Ali’s new Agri Terminals facility, which broke ground in February 2024. The AED 550 million complex will establish the largest multi-tenant facility in Dubai for storing and processing grains for domestic consumption and export to the broader region. The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion in early 2025. The Port and Free Zone offer a comprehensive logistics solution that can help Indian companies thrive.

DP World is significantly investing in India to create a leading integrated logistics network, including five port terminals and developing three free trade zones. This will position it as the country’s top free trade zone operator and developer.

THE ROBOTIC WAY

Warehouses may be the first industry to adopt humanoid robot workers…

Amazon has started testing a humanoid robot, Digit, in its warehouses this week, raising fresh questions about how swiftly androids will be utilized in logistics. Made by Agility Robotics, the bipedal robot can grasp and lift objects. As Amazon continues to explore new ways of automating its warehouses, it will start by shifting empty tote boxes.

Warehousing offers the perfect combination of repetitiveness and menial work, requiring more standardization and an unneeded form of handling things. For companies operating fulfilment centres with a broad product mix or fluctuating demand, humanoid robots’ flexibility could solve the ongoing labour and skills crisis in the logistics industry.

For example, humanoid robots could be dropped into the workforce during seasonal peak demand without requiring substantial operational changes, unlike other automated technologies where significant changes to warehouse workflows are needed. One early application for humanoid robots is likely to be trailer unloading, as it is simple, repetitive and physically demanding. Unlike other robotic solutions, humanoid robots offer the additional flexibility to take on multiple tasks in a facility rather than being limited to a single process or workflow.

Despite the current media storm around the technology and the number of bots in development, this change will take time, as pilot projects can take many months, or even years, to complete. Robotics solutions are in high demand

within the logistics sector due to severe labour and skills shortages and a volatile market. However, while the widespread use of humanoid robots within warehouses is undoubtedly possible, it is not inevitable. Other robotics technology is better suited to specific tasks and has fewer ethical problems, particularly in perceived role replacement.

Warehouses are ripe for using humanoid workers, but ethical obstacles pose a problem.

Reports claim Amazon’s decision to trial Digit in its warehouses raises concerns about the displacement of human workers by machines. Other automated systems are ‘unhuman’ enough not to cause unease to the same extent as humanoid workers. In response to fears around job loss, Originally

Amazon has emphasized the ‘hundreds of thousands of new jobs’ that have been created as a result of its use of robotic systems, including ‘700 categories of new job types, in skilled roles, which didn’t exist within the company beforehand.’ The global warehousing sector, particularly within the US, has faced critical labour and skills shortages in recent years. A poll published earlier this year by MHI and Deloitte revealed that hiring and retaining qualified workers and talent shortages were the leading challenges for US supply chain leaders, with many planning to invest in robotics and automation shortly.

Now that the advent of humanoid robots in the warehouse sector is a reality, it is causing ripples through the fulfilment sector about the potential ramifications for the human workforce and how quickly humanoid robots will become a common sight in fulfilment centres. However – although Digit walks on two legs and uses its arms to lift things – we are a long way from a Blade Runner-esque dystopic future in which sentient robots walk undetected among us. In practical terms, Digit has been designed specifically for warehouse automation, where the complexities of

human thought and movement are less critical than improving throughput and filling skills and labour gaps. With almost 1.5 million humans employed across Amazon’s operations, the company is keen to stress the potential to create jobs by deploying humanoid robots and replacing the most ‘menial, mundane and repetitive’ tasks. Developed by Amazon-backed Agility Robotics, Digit is described by the retail titan as ‘a mobile manipulator solution.’ Standing 5ft 9in (175cm) tall, Digit can lift and carry up to 35lbs (16kg), crouch, reach, pick up and put down.

Tye Brady, chief technologist at Amazon Robotics, told reporters in Seattle that the move does not mean job cuts at Amazon and people are ‘irreplaceable’ to the business because of their ‘ability to think at a higher level, the ability to diagnose problems.’ Companies such as Figure AI and Boston Dynamics are developing and testing other humanoid robots for distribution centres. Tesla’s Optimus Robot can sort objects fully autonomously as it can self-calibrate its arms and legs, while the commercial launch of Apollo by tech startup Apptronik is expected to occur in late 2024. Videos of the humanoid robot have already shown walking, case picking, palletizing and unloading trailers.

In reality, warehouse automation solutions have been in place for decades now, including autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that work alongside human workers and carry out many of the menial, physically demanding jobs. Automated storage and retrieval systems can pick orders much faster and are being used alongside human workers to increase throughput.

Most companies use robotic technology, working alongside and

collaborating with their human workforce. Anecdotal evidence suggests that people like working alongside technology such as AMRs, where robots essentially carry out the menial, physically demanding jobs and act in a supervisory capacity. However, this may become more problematic regarding humanoid robots; who wants to be outlifted, outpaced, or outperformed by a robot that looks like a person? So, how soon will humanoid robots become a regular feature in warehouses?

Despite Amazon’s latest move, the widespread use of humanoid workers in the warehouse is some way off. Pilots of new technology such as this can take up to 18 months; if successful, rollout tends to be in small steps. However, Amazon has always been a leader in its use of robotics, and the rest of the industry tends to follow (or fail!), so this pilot could be the catalyst for humanoid robot uptake in the coming years. How human workers will respond to their robot colleagues is still being determined, but with the warehouse industry facing a skills and labour crisis, this could offer the solution companies have been looking for.

Is it possible for the use of humanoid robots to be hyped too much? Given the representations of humanoid robots we often see in popular culture, will this shape public opinion? Can robots look too much like people? The more lifelike humanoid robots are, the more they are personified as labour replacements. It is too early to tell whether humanoid robots will become a common sight in warehouses around the world in the long term—much will depend on how successful these early pilots are. Humanoid robots offer the potential flexibility and scalability to be used within existing warehouse operations alongside the human workforce, helping to pick, move, and sort goods. They are the next logical step in the evolution of the multibillion-dollar robotics industry, as customers seek solutions that can be used across multiple workflows and applications.

#RAMADAN: AMAZON ON AN UPSWING

How is Amazon gearing up for the holy month of Ramadan? Here are all your answers…

The Holy Month of Ramadan has begun, and millions of people across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are experiencing a change in routines and timings. This has a definite impact on customers’ shopping habits. Just as shoppers start to prepare well in advance for the Holy Month, so do retailers. As Amazon’s network grows, it continues to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) operating in the logistics and delivery sector in the UAE to leverage its technology, infrastructure, and training to establish their companies as Delivery Service Partners (DSPs). Currently, the Amazon network in the region comprises more than 13 fulfilment centres, 720 external fulfilment nodes, and 65 owned and third-party delivery stations dispersed throughout the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, among other things. Here, we chat with Prashant Saran, Director of Operations, Amazon MENA, and we delve into the strategies and initiatives Amazon deploys to navigate the intricacies of Ramadan.

How does Amazon adjust its fulfilment and delivery infrastructure to manage the increased demand during the Holy Month of Ramadan?

The Holy Month of Ramadan is a particular time for our customers in the MENA region. For us at Amazon, this is the time of year when our customers rely on us even more to deliver with speed, convenience and reliability. Our research has shown that 1 in 3 customers in the UAE and KSA start their Ramadan shopping 30 days in advance. Hence, our preparation must commence even earlier to ensure we are sufficiently prepared to continue delighting our customers. A seamless customer experience is vital to achieving customer satisfaction, and we are continually investing in our people, processes, and technology to ensure we are fully equipped to meet the seasonal needs leading up to and throughout the Holy Month. Throughout the year, we leverage advanced logistics solutions and technology to streamline our operations, ensuring that every package reaches its destination swiftly and accurately. This includes employing innovative technology across our last mile and establishing a network of delivery partners, allowing us to scale to the most remote locations, even during busy shopping seasons. Today, our network in the region consists of more than 13 Fulfillment Centers, 720 external fulfilment nodes, and 65 owned and third-party delivery stations across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. We continue to boost our capacity across both fulfilment and transportation, enabling us to deliver a seamless experience to customers during busy shopping moments like Ramadan.

What role does technology play in elevating the customer experience during the Ramadan shopping period? Have any new initiatives or improvements been implemented this year to address the unique demands of the season?

PRASHANT SARAN, Director Operations Amazon MENA

Technology is the backbone of our operations, and our employees and backend technology work harmoniously to meet the unique demands of the Holy Month of Ramadan. This year, we’ve further harnessed these capabilities to ensure that from the moment a package enters our Fulfillment Center to when it arrives at a customer’s doorstep, the journey is optimized for speed and reliability. We use AI and complex algorithms to speed up fulfilment and last-mile delivery, optimize our packaging to reduce waste, and develop innovative solutions, thus enhancing the customer experience.

Customers remain our top priority, and we work backwards to deliver experiences that cater to their needs. Our global teams regularly test new operational technology, enabling Amazon to remain at the forefront of exceptional service delivery. It’s always Day 1 at Amazon as we remain dedicated to inventing on behalf of customers, delivering millions of products across the region while ensuring a fast, safe, and convenient shopping experience.

Same-day or one-day delivery is a big USP for retail brands to win loyal customers, especially during customer shopping moments like Ramadan. How do you make this happen?

Ramadan meals are cherished moments that bring families and communities together. In today’s busy world, the convenience of same-day and one-day shopping on Amazon is invaluable when planning for daily iftars or schools and shopping for Eid visits with family and friends. Our Prime promise of one-day and same-day delivery is made possible thanks to Amazon’s operations network in the MENA region, which is powered by innovative technology, optimized transportation services, dedicated employees, and partners. We employ sophisticated algorithms to optimize the picking path for our employees, minimizing walking distances within the facility.

After a package arrives at our delivery station, we use technology to sort packages by zones to maximize delivery efficiency, ensuring the delivery promise window for that package is met. Once the packages are loaded into vans, the final leg of the package journey continues seamlessly through our extensive delivery network. Continual enhancements in technology improve address quality and routing efficiency. All these factors work together to enable us to meet same-day and oneday delivery deadlines.

How does Amazon’s last-mile infrastructure and Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) program support small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in the region during the Holy Month?

For brands in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the Holy Month of Ramadan is one of the most important periods in the retail calendar. Families get together for special gatherings and gift-giving, which presents a unique opportunity for SMBs and entrepreneurs to deepen their engagement with customers through culturally relevant products and services and expand their presence in the market.

Over the past few years, many SMBs and entrepreneurs across MENA ventured into online retail through Amazon. This enables them to tap into the millions of customers who shop on Amazon. Leveraging our extensive expertise and robust infrastructure, SMBs can simplify inventory and supply chain management, ensuring reliable and seamless customer experiences amidst the heightened demand witnessed during a busy customer moment like Ramadan.

Through our Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) program, SMBs can rely on Amazon to store, pick, pack, and ship customer orders, empowering them to offer fast delivery options such as one-day and same-day delivery. With Amazon’s operations’ scale and logistical capabilities, this competitive advantage would be easier to achieve.

How is Amazon supporting the community during Ramadan?

This Holy Month of Ramadan, Amazon is elevating its commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences and extending meaningful community support. We are proud to continue our longstanding partnerships with the UAE Food Bank, Saudi Food Bank (Eta’am), and the Egyptian Food Bank through the 2024 edition of our ‘Iftar on Wheels’ meal donation program. Now in its fourth year, this initiative leverages Amazon’s advanced logistics technology and scale to pack and distribute food hampers and fresh meals to even more beneficiaries in the most remote areas across the region during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Going beyond leveraging our delivery network to spread the joy of the season, this year’s edition of ‘Iftar on Wheels’ will strive to activate the most significant number of volunteers as part of Amazon’s ongoing volunteering opportunities for employeesmobilizing hundreds of employees to pack and deliver 50,000 kilos of food to underprivileged families in local communities.

MAKING A MARK

This month, the word “women” has us all talking. Why is the pestering question only this month? March is referred to as the month of women since it is International Women’s Day, but there should be a lot more conversation about women. Particularly in an industry like logistics, where there is a presumption that it is a field dominated by men, skilled workers are greatly needed as the logistics sector proliferates. This suggests that women are likelier to obtain lucrative jobs with alluring benefits.

Furthermore, women are finding new career opportunities in logistics due to the rise of automation and technological advancements like artificial intelligence and automation - warehouse automation systems call for knowledge of robotics and data management. In this changing environment, women with these skill sets are well-positioned for leadership positions. Additionally, logistics companies are realising the benefits of diversity and implementing

programmes to make workplaces more inclusive of women by implementing diversity and inclusion programmes. These initiatives can include sponsorship programmes, training on unconscious bias, and efforts to build a robust talent pipeline for women in leadership positions.

In summary, women are making great progress in the logistics sector’s leadership ranks. By showcasing their abilities, taking advantage of fresh opportunities, and pushing for change, they are paving the way for a more prosperous and inclusive future. Women will surely keep moving up the ladder and into the highest levels of the logistics industry with ongoing efforts to remove barriers and foster a supportive environment.

How Are Women in Logistics Overcoming Stereotypes?

The transportation and logistics industry had long been perceived as male-dominated, with stereotypes often dictating that the job roles are better suited for men. Despite constituting nearly half the global population, women played marginal roles in this traditionally male-centric sector for many decades. However, recent years have witnessed a heightened focus on inclusion and gender diversity, resulting in a rise in the number of women professionals in the industry. This underscores the potential benefits of a more diverse workforce for the entire e-supply chain industry. Dr Shereen Nassar, Global Director of Logistics Studies and Director of MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management Suite at Heriot-Watt University Dubai explains how women break through conventional wisdom…

In 2023, women have experienced a notable resurgence in the supply chain workforce, marking significant progress across various leadership levels, as indicated by a survey conducted by Gartner. The advancements were

particularly evident at the C-Suite and executive tiers, where women occupy 26 per cent of roles (Chief Supply Chain Officer, Senior Vice President, Chief Procurement Officer – a historic high and an increase from 19 per cent in 2022. Gartner’s eighth annual Women in Supply Chain Survey, conducted between February and March 2023 with 225 supply chain leaders, revealed that women now constitute 41 per cent of the overall supply chain workforce, up from 39 per cent in 2022. Currently, more focus is on jobs related to procurement, supply, and planning activities with less contribution to logistics jobs. Despite this overall increase, women’s representation in frontline roles remains limited, accounting for only 31 per cent of such positions. This shows there is still a long journey to fill the gap between men and women in management roles. Women get stuck in entry-level roles, and many still face challenges getting and maintaining higher leadership positions.

The job roles in warehousing and distribution have also been perceived as more suitable for men. However, a

paradigm shift is occurring as more and more women enter this field, challenging stereotypes and showcasing their invaluable contributions to the critical components of the supply chain. As per the ProLogis report, there is a more equitable gender distribution in the field of warehousing, with 34 per cent of workers being female. Contrary to prevailing stereotypes, women in warehousing and distribution fulfil a wide array of roles that extend beyond traditional administrative or support positions. Women make significant strides in every aspect of these supply chain processes, from operating forklifts and managing inventory to overseeing logistics and leading teams. Their contributions are crucial for the efficient functioning of warehouses and distribution centres, proving that gender should not hinder success in this industry.

One of the most deeply ingrained stereotypes is the belief that operating heavy machinery, such as forklifts, is exclusively a man’s job. However, women are increasingly breaking through this stereotype, showcasing their expertise and precision in handling these vital tools. Women excel in operational roles and climb the ranks to occupy leadership and management positions within warehousing and distribution. As leaders, women bring a unique perspective to decisionmaking processes, fostering diverse and inclusive work environments. Women’s ability to multitask, communicate effectively, and solve problems makes them invaluable assets in managing the complex logistics and coordination required in these critical sectors. The modern warehouse relies heavily on technology and automation, which reshaped the perspectives on the nature of the jobs and the involvement of women. For example, women can be involved in jobs related to integrating technologies into logistics and warehouse operations, including advanced inventory management systems, optimising logistics through data analytics, or overseeing the

deployment of cutting-edge robotics. Their proficiency in adapting to and adopting new technologies is reshaping the landscape of warehousing and distribution.

Despite the progress, women in logistics continue to face challenges rooted in historical gender biases. Stereotypes, discrimination, and a lack of representation persist, making it essential to address these issues for the industry to reach its full potential. Initiatives promoting diversity, inclusion, mentorship, and education are crucial to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. This requires all stakeholders, including educators, industry, and government, to collaborate. The role of educators is critical in addressing and bridging gaps through enhancing society’s awareness of gender equality, diversity, and inclusion and promoting these concepts. Educators also should promote logistics as a profession and a promising career for both males and females.

Furthermore, educators should work closely with logistics companies on internship programmes that offer equal opportunities that help companies identify talents for early career opportunities. The industry must actively promote diversity and inclusion to overcome stereotypes. This involves

creating awareness about women’s significant contributions in various supply chain and logistics activities, providing equal opportunities for professional growth, and implementing policies that foster a fair and supportive work environment. By prioritising diversity, companies can benefit from a broader range of perspectives, increased innovation, and improved overall performance. Government initiatives are significant as they influence the change of the mindset towards female leaders and the social perception of that. They lead on that by example, by appointing females to very high positions at the government level. Relevant policies and regulations should be issued to instigate businesses to take action to fill the current gaps.

The narrative of women in logistics is changing, challenging stereotypes, and reshaping the industry’s landscape.

Women are proving they can excel in diverse roles, from forklift operators to top-level managers, bringing unique perspectives and skills to the table. Breaking barriers is about empowering women and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of warehouses and distribution centres. It is essential to celebrate the diversity of talent that women bring to the industry, leaving stereotypes behind and creating a more inclusive and equitable vision for the future.

LNME and Sruthi Venkateswaran, Operations Manager at Transcorp International, discuss how women are paving the road for themselves in the logistics sector…

Why did you choose to work in logistics?

An opportunity presented itself, and I decided to take up the challenge. Having spent seven years in the sales industry where female representation was well-received, transitioning to a role in Operations posed a personal challenge. Historically dominated by males, this field presented a unique opportunity for me to test my capabilities.

Tackling day-to-day operational challenges strengthened my

resolve and character, and I demonstrated to my colleagues that opportunities are not bound by gender.

Which professional obstacles have you encountered the most, and how have you overcome them?

From time to time, subtle gender discrimination and stereotypical expectations regarding women’s ability to manage logistics operations persist, particularly in other Gulf countries within the industry. However, by possessing the

resilience to navigate these obstacles and leveraging the support of a supportive mentor and a cohesive team, I was able to overcome such challenges and emerge even more resilient.

Another personal obstacle I encountered was managing my work-life balance, mainly because Operations require attention around the clock. The solution I found was to empower leaders within the team, instil in them a sense of responsibility, and establish robust processes to ensure smooth operations even when I wasn’t always available. By delegating tasks effectively and fostering a culture of accountability, I maintained a balance between work and personal life while ensuring that operations ran seamlessly.

Which aspects of your work are the most fulfilling at Transcorp?

I evaluate achievements and success through two lenses: personal growth and contributions to the company that has nurtured my development.

Reflecting on my progress, I assess how I have improved

compared to the previous year. This includes enhancing skills, expanding knowledge, and refining approaches to tasks. Additionally, I consider my contributions to the organization’s success. I take pride in tangible outcomes such as improved numerical metrics, increased efficiency, heightened profitability, and nurturing talented individuals within the team.

I feel a profound sense of accomplishment when I witness the fruits of my labour in quantifiable results and the development of capable minds under my mentorship. It signals a job well done—a testament to both personal growth and meaningful contributions to the company that has afforded me the freedom to flourish.

Over your career, have you noticed any changes in the representation of women in logistics?

Since beginning my career in Logistics in 2018, I have witnessed a remarkable transformation in the E-commerce last-mile industry over the past six years. With the emergence of prominent brands in the market, there

has been a notable shift in the representation of women within this industry. The once-prevailing stereotype of astonishment at seeing a woman working in logistics has gradually dissipated.

Notably, women have been excelling in various logistics departments beyond operations. Roles in human resources, admin, sales, customer service, and more have seen a significant influx of talented and capable women. This marks a substantial departure from the previously male-dominated landscape of the logistics sector.

The changing dynamics reflect a shift in industry norms and the increasing recognition of women’s skills, expertise, and contributions across all facets of the logistics industry. This positive evolution underscores the importance of diversity and inclusivity in driving innovation and success within the field.

What are some of the trends and opportunities you are seeing in the industry?

Over the past four years, there has been a significant shift towards online

ordering, particularly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This surge in e-commerce has heightened the demand for faster delivery services while maintaining stringent compliance standards.

The industry is increasingly gravitating towards same-day and express deliveries to meet consumers’ evolving expectations. As the market progresses, we have proactively adapted our services to ensure clients receive expedited delivery options that align with their enduser requirements.

The logistics industry has a growing emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Companies are exploring eco-friendly delivery options such as electric vehicles, bicycle couriers, and optimized route planning to reduce carbon emissions and minimize environmental impact.

How can we make the logistics industry more sustainable?

In addition to transitioning to electric vehicles, there are multiple avenues through which we can advance sustainability in logistics operations. One critical approach is advanced route optimization to minimise fuel consumption and lower emissions. This entails leveraging sophisticated software to streamline delivery routes, optimizing efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Another viable strategy involves embracing biofuel and biodiesel alternatives, which have become increasingly available in recent years within the UAE. By incorporating these sustainable fuel options into our fleet, we can significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

These initiatives underscore our commitment to sustainability,

demonstrating proactive steps toward environmental stewardship within the logistics industry. By exploring diverse approaches and embracing innovative solutions, we can pave the way for a greener, more eco-friendly future while maintaining operational excellence.

Where do you see the future of women in logistics in the region?

Women are increasingly entering and thriving in various roles within the logistics sector, including operations, management, supply chain, technology, and leadership positions. As the industry becomes more inclusive, diverse talent pools contribute to innovation and growth.

With this increase in representation of women in the

field, I also see women entrepreneurs making strides in the logistics sector, ensuring their leadership drives positive change, breaking gender barriers and shaping the industry’s future.

What guidance would you offer to female candidates for a logistics job?

Embracing your uniqueness is a powerful source of strength and inspiration. When you acknowledge and celebrate what makes you different, you tap into your individuality and unlock your full potential. Rather than conforming to societal norms or trying to fit into predefined moulds, embracing your uniqueness allows you to express yourself and pursue your passions authentically.

RISING UPWARDS

Sue Donoghue was always drawn to the logistics industry’s dynamic nature and its critical role in connecting businesses globally. The constant challenge of optimizing supply chains and finding innovative solutions to logistical puzzles appealed to her problem-solving nature.

She began her career in the freight industry in 1996, and the diverse responsibilities of being an accountant,

trouble-shooter, and business developer within a logistics framework captivated her. DHL Global Forwarding’s values and culture align with hers, making it a fulfilling career choice for 18 years.

Encountering Professional Obstacles

Navigating the logistics industry has presented unique challenges, especially as a woman in a historically maledominated field. However, these challenges have been a

source of motivation for Sue.

“By enhancing my expertise, expanding my network, and fostering understanding across cultures, I transformed potential barriers into avenues for growth and innovation. For example, “ the recent transformative changes in Saudi Arabia highlight not obstacles but opportunities for positive change,” says Sue Donoghue, Country Manager of DHL Global Forwarding KSA.

Sue’s approach to every challenge permanently recognises it as an opportunity to learn and grow. This mindset has been instrumental in overcoming professional hurdles and contributing positively to the industry’s evolution towards inclusivity.

As the Country Manager for a leading global forwarding company, she is grateful for the opportunity to lead by example and to help pave the way for future generations of women in logistics. “I am excited to be part of an industry increasingly recognizing the value of diversity and innovation,” shares Sue.

Driving Force at DHL Global Forwarding

Sue’s career at DHL Global Forwarding might have started as a two-week placement 25 years ago, but being strategic about her growth led her to this moment and place in her career. She believes the beauty of working in this sector, particularly at DHL, is the diversity of roles and responsibilities

that come with each day. She adds, “One moment, I am delving into the intricacies of accounting, and the next, I am navigating the complexities of logistics, tackling challenges headon, driving business development, or spearheading sales strategies.”

This dynamic environment makes Sue’s role incredibly fulfilling. The variety not only keeps Sue engaged but also continuously pushes her to expand her skill set and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of global logistics.

Representation of women in logistics

Over the years, Sue witnessed a positive shift in the representation of women in logistics. There is a growing recognition of the value diverse perspectives

bring to the industry. Companies are increasingly fostering inclusive cultures, and more women are pursuing and excelling in logistics roles.

“I strongly believe diversity is pivotal in driving progress and innovation within any industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we focus on attracting, retaining, and promoting women in the logistics industry, as it can unlock innovation and drive growth for organisations and economies at large,” she continues. “I want to stress the significance of creating a culture of leadership that inspires future generations of women to pursue their career aspirations in this vibrant and economyboosting industry.”

KSA & Logistics on women’s empowerment

According to Sue, in recent years, Saudi Arabia has seen a rise in the number of women joining the workforce, even in traditionally male-dominated industries. This positive development is mainly due to the implementation of reforms under the Vision 2030 agenda to promote women’s empowerment by providing education and employment opportunities.

As for the logistics industry, she believes there will be a steady increase in women joining, contributing their skills and expertise. Sue highlights, “This progress is due not only to the reforms but also to the changing social attitudes towards women in the workplace and the legal framework in Middle Eastern societies. I am optimistic that the future looks bright for women in logistics in the Kingdom, with a more diverse and inclusive landscape.”

Sustainability

To make the logistics industry more sustainable, it is crucial to adopt environmentally friendly practices, utilize technology for efficient route planning, and invest in green transportation alternatives. Collaboration among industry stakeholders to reduce carbon footprints and improve supply chain transparency is also essential.

Sue believes the industry is focused on advancing and deploying technology, such as AI, and achieving Net Zero. At DHL Global Forwarding, they are committed to sustainability in the region and have introduced a number of projects to reduce their carbon footprint. “For example, we launched a new, more comprehensive Carbon Intelligence programme as part of our digital customer platform myDHLi, where customers have more options to reduce, track, and report their CO2 emissions (in setting and offsetting options),” explains Sue. DHL Global Forwarding also explores strategic opportunities with government entities, business partners, and markets worldwide. Currently, it remains guided by its Strategy 2025, which focuses on harnessing globalization, e-commerce, digitalization, and sustainability for the profitable long-term growth of the business.

Golden Words

“I encourage female candidates to be persistent and confident and continuously seek opportunities for learning and growth. Embrace challenges as learning experiences, build a strong professional network, and actively contribute to creating a more inclusive environment within the logistics sector.”

Vibha Mehta and Maria Dos Santos, Manager—Air Services at Modern Freight Company, have a candid chat about why Maria chose a profession that was unexpected and how she has been thriving in the industry…

32 | LOGISTICS NEWS ME | MARCH 2024 WWW.CBNME.COM
MARIA DOS SANTOS, ManagerAir Services at Modern Freight Company

When Maria Dos Santos moved to Dubai in 1999, she started working as an office junior at the airport office of Modern Freight Company and a time of shorthand minute-taking handwritten ledgers, airway bills, shorthand minute-taking, typewriters, fax machines, and practical problem-solving. Under the guidance of the late Mr Sarkis Mamprelian, Maria gained extensive knowledge and experience in airfreight forwarding by starting from scratch. Maria learned and matured in the DAFZA air freight industry via her self-belief and determined mindset, growing alongside the UAE as it became the global phenomenon it is today. Additionally, she was committed to MFC and worked up to become the Airfreight Manager. She gained practical experience in all facets of airfreight, which is uncommon in today’s world.

“The logistics industry is all about finding solutions to challenges, with a win-win situation. It pushes you to think harder, work with the resources you have on hand, under pressure, and find a way to come out successfully,” shares Maria Dos Santos, Manager – Air Services at Modern Freight Company.

Setbacks

Maria considers herself lucky to have experienced a few setbacks but would like to bring up a specific instance. At the time, men appeared to dominate the logistics industry, and women were not trusted to attend meetings, participate in discussions, or make decisions. Maria continues, “I recall being asked to accompany my senior male colleague to a client meeting because my superiors were not entirely certain I could conduct the meeting effectively. This made me feel incompetent.”

Not wanting to repeat, she discussed this internally and got herself another opportunity on another occasion. The meeting was a massive success because Maria ensured she was even more prepared than usual and went ahead. This demonstrated that thanks to their superior negotiating abilities, women could and would manage every aspect of business just as successfully as their male counterparts.

Satisfaction At Its Peak

Since satisfied customers are the ones who stick with you, customer satisfaction is crucial in the logistics industry, which is a service sector. Clients trust you with their shipments, particularly the intricate and urgent ones that can’t afford delays or issues. “The team and I just click into action and get the job done on time without fuss; that’s when the pressure is on, and the customer doesn’t believe you can do it. The best feeling is seeing the smiles on their faces,” Maria remarks.

The second-best thing is that when clients return, you establish yourself as a reliable partner. At that point, you become an integral part of their team, and they value and acknowledge you. This helps the team tremendously and keeps Maria motivated.

Shifts In Representation

When Maria joined this industry 25 years back, only a few women were in prominent roles, and not many handled live operations. But today, one can see women calling the shots, taking important decisions at workplaces, holding big titles, and being available 24/7 if the job calls for it. “So, yes, there has been a shift to some extent.” Maria continues. “We have many women donning the entrepreneur roles and starting their own logistics companies, offering consultancy services and advice. It’s amazing to see women rise higher, cross the high bars they have set for themselves and make a difference.”

Vibha Mehta and Jacqueline Han Lin Ni, Area Manager at Etihad Cargo, discuss the evolving women’s dynamics within the industry…
JACQUELINE HAN LIN NI,
Area Manager at Etihad 36 | LOGISTICS NEWS ME | MARCH 2024 WWW.CBNME.COM Cargo

In her role as Area Manager, Jacqueline Han Lin Ni is responsible for building relationships with customers and ensuring they meet their needs proactively and with agility.

Etihad Cargo takes a customercentric approach to service delivery and is always exploring ways to add value to its partnerships.

After graduating from university with a degree in finance, Jacqueline took a role at a shipping company, which was her first step into logistics. From working in finance, she transitioned into human resources, IT and procurement before taking a commercial role. “I moved into air cargo in 2008, joining Etihad Cargo. What was immediately apparent was the huge difference between sea and air freight,” shares Jacqueline Han Lin Ni, Area Manager at Etihad Cargo. In sea freight, shipments are often planned for 25 days to one month. On the other hand, air cargo is incredibly dynamic, and one can make changes and adapt

to requirements up to a few hours before the aircraft departs. This is one of the many reasons Jacqueline finds air cargo exciting and loves working in this industry.

Challenges

While Etihad Cargo has taken great strides in diversity and inclusion, air cargo is still essentially maledominated, and it can be challenging

for women to sit at the leadership table. Jacqueline feels lucky to work at Etihad Cargo, where she has a team that supports and celebrates women and a working environment that empowers women to seize every opportunity. She adds, “I still walk into meetings where I am the only woman at the table, but on the whole, I think men and women in this sector are facing the same challenges — managing market conditions in such a fastevolving sector.”

Exceptional Perspectives

Women bring diverse perspectives and management styles to their logistics sector. Their contribution often emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and strategic thinking. The increasing involvement of women in logistics is enhancing the industry’s performance and driving it towards a more inclusive and sustainable future. Their diverse perspectives and innovative approaches are essential for addressing the complex challenges of modern supply chains.

At Etihad Cargo, 40% of their employees are

female. The executive leadership team at Etihad Airways has demonstrated a commitment to building a diverse, inclusive and equal organisation. This is evident at every business level, and several programmes have been launched to support this.

Trends That Are Trending

People are an excellent resource for staying up to date with the latest trends and advancements, and Jacqueline takes advantage of every opportunity

to network and share knowledge, whether at conferences, exhibitions, or meetings.

She continues, “I am lucky to work with a carrier prioritising innovation. We are continuously developing and launching new digital tools and features that not only transform our operations but also have the potential to benefit the wider air cargo community.” For example, Etihad Cargo also uses AI-powered solutions to improve

efficiency and accuracy. They have deployed three AI-powered products — Amplifi, Cargo Eye and Assemble, which boost cargo capacity and optimise freighter operations. These AI solutions have enabled Etihad Cargo to digitise and standardise cargo handling, significantly enhancing service levels for customers and partners and ensuring quicker response times for freighter charter quotations. Since the launch of these solutions in Singapore in August 2023, almost 8,500

shipments across 168 flights have been digitised, and they plan to roll the AI-powered tools out to a further eight stations in 2024.

Delivering The Best

“I think I have attributes that help me perform my role daily. I would say I am passionate, positive and detail-oriented. These attributes have served me well in my 15year career with Etihad Cargo,” adds Jacqueline. In air cargo, where the timely and safe delivery

LNME CARGO
38 | LOGISTICS NEWS ME | MARCH 2024 WWW.CBNME.COM

of goods is paramount, her passion has led her to seek out innovative solutions to problems and continuously look for ways to improve efficiency and serve customers better. Additionally, her positive attitude has helped her to build a supportive team environment, which is crucial for meeting the challenges of air cargo, handling specialised shipments and managing tight schedules. The air cargo industry involves complex logistics and strict regulations, so being detail-oriented has enabled her to navigate these complexities precisely.

Good time management, setting clear goals, and prioritising tasks help Jacqueline maintain efficiency and be a valuable customer resource. She thinks leveraging technology to achieve efficiency is a great strategy. “Since our digitalisation journey in 2018, Etihad Cargo has been committed to developing and adopting new technology to transform air freight, increase efficiency and offer tailored customer experiences,” highlights Jacqueline.

Scope of Growth

Companies must tailor their offerings to prospective employees to motivate more women to join the logistics sector, and Etihad Cargo has done just this. They have created an environment that supports and empowers women, ensuring they have opportunities to develop, grow professionally, and seek promotions within the company.

Companies must make it possible for people to enter and stay in the workforce if they want to attract the best talent. “Recruitment policies should be fair and genderneutral, giving every candidate the same consideration. Companies could also make it easier for employees to juggle work and home commitments,” explains Jacqueline. Where possible, childcare support could also be offered. While it may not be possible for organisations to cover childcare costs in full, subsidies could be provided to make it more affordable for those with families to return to work.

Golden Words

“My advice to anyone, male or female, considering a career in logistics, would be that they need to trust themselves. If you work hard and are committed, be confident you can do your job well and add value to all those around you.”

ANUPA KARKI, C&F Supervisor at Global Shipping and Logistics

KISMET

Why did you choose to work in logistics?

I didn’t choose logistics, but logistics chose me. I was a fresher, right out of college, without any experience in logistics. One fine day, as a young aspirant in Nepal, an application to work abroad returned in the form of an interview. Without thinking twice, I agreed to the interview, which I was able to successfully go through, which led to me moving to the UAE.

As a newcomer to Dubai with few friends or family, I used my time effectively at work to learn about warehousing, logistics, clearing, and forwarding. I found myself fascinated by the process of 3PL warehousing and how stocks were brought in, managed, and moved for clients without their intervention. Learning about freight and shipments, shipping line terms, and clearance processes with Dubai Municipality and Dubai Customs was equally fascinating.

The rest is career growth, which saw me move from warehouse operations to customer care before eventually moving into Freight (Clearing and forwarding), where I have found my place in GSL. It’s been 13 years since I joined GSL, and I wish to retire from this great job.

Which professional obstacles have you encountered the most, and how have you overcome them?

I enjoy learning, so trying new tasks and taking on new responsibilities was never an obstacle. However, as one of the few women in the field, it was difficult to adjust to what was considered a man’s world initially. It was a matter of pushing the boundaries and taking on more responsibilities I could deliver.

When I started at GSL as part of the customer service team for MARS, the biggest challenge I faced was

stepping into the shoes of a senior staff member about to leave for a vacation. While still on probation, I stepped up to the occasion, managed to keep the function going, and was recognized as the best employee for the quarter (GSL quarterly award) while still within my probation.

It was just the times we were back then when women were not necessarily seen as logisticians or heroes of supply chain management. I also saw some resistance

from clients who were sceptical about me holding the fort. Frankly, I have never looked back since then, but I have continued to grow while training others to manage the shipments for their clients. Much hard work has resulted in the position I am in today.

Which aspects of your work are the most fulfilling?

As I said earlier, I love to learn new things, and over the years, I have had the pleasure of learning how GSL has grown in customer service excellence through innovation, customer service focus, and visionary leadership. I am also a process-driven person, and what I find most fulfilling about working at GSL is that our transparency-driven approach has helped our customers grow. We say, ‘ At GSL, we are in the business of growing your business,’ seeing our customers succeed because our services deliver results is the most fulfilling thing for me.

How can we make the logistics industry more sustainable?

There are various things businesses could do to be more sustainable, but GSL is an excellent example of sustainability in all its different guises. We are driven by a purpose summarised in our tagline, ‘Driven by you,’ where we invest in our customers’ business growth. We strategically invest in the growth of our services in anticipation of the development of our customer’s operations and ensure our business sustainability.

We work on sustainability in our processes by ensuring that we innovate and apply digital transformation wherever it will yield efficiency and effectiveness in our business. Inventory transparency is critical to the movement of goods in

trade, and we ensure there is no room for error, duplication, or redundancy. Our approach towards our people is also one of sustainability. Just like me, many of my colleagues have had their careers paved for them so that we can grow at work. This increases staff loyalty and ensures clients have sustainable command chains that work to their advantage.

Lastly, our policies are also governed by sustainability and a keen sense of responsibility towards the environment. We invest in renewable energy, from 8.5 MW solar power plants on our warehouse rooftops to having the region’s only fleet of solarpowered trucks. We recycle plastics, repurpose wooden pallets, and manage wastewater to ensure zero-tolow waste.

We at GSL are working towards making our client’s supply chain as

LNME SHIPPING

carbon-free as possible, and this is the best example for any logistics company to think about holistic sustainability.

Over your career, have you noticed any changes in the representation of women in logistics?

Women in different parts of the world have had varying experiences, responsibilities, and roles in Logistics. In the UAE, particularly at GSL, I have been blessed to have an Emirati founder with an International management team that believes in equality and diversity. I was encouraged to grow

through my career at GSL and was required to champion my station as much as a male candidate would be required to. Overall, we have seen a sea change in the representation of women in logistics over the past two decades. From shop floor, behindthe-conveyor jobs to customer-facing and even management roles, women are present across the board in logistics today.

What guidance would you offer to female candidates for a logistics job?

Times have changed, and

today, women are actively pursuing higher education and degrees in logistics to join the world of supply chains. To anyone keen on joining, a career in logistics is like one in any other industry. You

are responsible for your client’s success, which can be very empowering if you use your nurturing nature to grow your client’s businesses and, through that, your career. With confidence and assertiveness, you should be able to learn your job, fulfil your responsibilities and stand your ground. Being informed about emerging trends, technologies, and regulations also helps. Particularly when clients and management expect you to make decisions on the front line for them, continuous learning and staying updated will help you remain competitive and adaptable in this rapidly evolving field. Problem-solving, analytical thinking, good communication, and adaptability are equally important.
