Letter from the Publisher August was the busy month we expected. Thanks to all of our readers who stopped by one of our booths to say hello and offer input on the changes in our magazine. We always welcome reader comments because they are who this magazine is for.

September is another busy month for myself and the staff of the Conscious Community Magazine and the Spiritual Learning Center. Personally, I will be presenting at the Theosophical Society Annual event, TheosoFest, on Saturday September 12. It is an all day expo and my class on dream interpretation begins at 3:30. Last year there were no empty seats in their auditorium for my presentation so come early and avoid being disappointed. I will also be speaking at the Body Mind Spirit Expo in Indianapolis the weekend of September 26-27.

There are two Burning Bowl ceremonies that I will be leading on September 23rd and 24th at Crystal River Gifts in South Elgin and at our location in Burr Ridge respectively.

Check out the Spiritual Learning Center ad in this issue for further information. The Burning Bowl is an ancient ceremony and a center point focus of release and letting go of all that no longer serves us, a critical feature of a personal journey to a higher state of consciousness. Our “baggage” holds us back and releasing it enables us to move forward and upward in our personal spiritual journey.

The Qi Revolution will be in town September 12-15 at the Schaumburg Convention Center with training beginning and advanced practitioners. Several of our staff will be in attendance so say hello if you see them. See the back cover of our August issue for schedule and an outline of content.

Joanne Macko is sponsoring her annual Lightworkers Conference September 25-27 at Benedictine University in Lisle. Members of our staff will be manning our booth to meet and greet our readers so please stop by to say hello.

Our national political process plods along at its own pace towards the inevitable 2016 election for President. It offers perhaps the greatest entertainment value of anything in the press or on television today.

What is most interesting to me is the meteoric rise of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

They have both struck a sensitive chord in their respective parties that no one else in the primaries is addressing. Whether you agree or disagree with one or none of them, they have become a focal point of the “feeling disenfranchised” of both major parties and given them a voice in presidential politics, albeit a very loud one. Their candidacies and polling numbers are a reflection of voters feeling unheard and ignored and most prominently, not represented by any other candidate on either side. I will not be surprised if the polls ultimately show voters crossing over from another party to support the vocal if unelectable candidate of their choice.

Change is upon us and will be with us for some time to come. An increasing public interest in change of the status quo is being reflected in support for Sanders and Trump. There are other manifestations but this is the most visible at present. Can our elected officials be as far back from the electorate as they seem today? Only time will tell.

by Theresa Puskar Among his many gifts, Edgar Cayce could read auras. In fact, on one occasion he was getting into an elevator. However, before the doors closed, he decided not to get in and immediately exited it.

There was a malfunction, and all inside crashed to their deaths.

The reason Cayce did not get into the elevator was that he saw the auras (or energy centers) were of those embarking. None of them had any color; their aura was black. This was a sign of their imminent deaths.

While few of us have Cayce’s extraordinary gift, there are tools available to us that will assist us in seeing our auras. On Thursday, August 13th, I had the pleasure of getting an aura reading from aura experts Susan and Jack Lewis. They spent the evening photographing our auras, and then providing us with an enriching seminar on auras at the remarkable offices of Frances Gaik, Psy.D. Before I continue, I have to say a word about the venue in which this seminar was being held. Frances Gaik is an outstanding psychologist, who, in my opinion has truly mastered the art of manifesting. Surrounded by wildlife, nestled in a magical wooded area of Oak Brook, these offices radiate health and vitality. Each room has many large windows that look out into the lush green area that surrounds them. Of course, green being the heart chakra, I noted that the atmosphere was permeated with heart energy. What a wondrous healing place!

sat in front of the camera and placed my hands upon some steel plates. They were then covered by a black cloth while the photo was taken. I later learned that the auric reading was taken through the energy of my hands and then transmitted onto the page that shows the shape and size of each of my chakras on a black full body image. For those of you who are unfamiliar with chakras, they are energy centers that are located throughout the body, and oversee certain body, mind, and spirit functions. While opinions vary on the number that exist in and around the body, most agree that there are seven main chakra or energy centers. They start at your groin area and run along your spine to above your head. Each chakra has emotions and organs affiliated with it.

As part of the package, we were given charts that link each chakra to its related gland, sense, organs, mental and emotional issues, physical dysfunctions, ages of development, stones, oils and herbs, vitamins and minerals. This chart helps us to understand the chakra system in relation to our mind-body-spirit health, and provides us with tools to assist us in balancing any chakras that may require some attention.

One insight that Jack and Susan shared was that this technology melds the “seen” world of science with the “unseen” world of energy. I am fascinated by the fact that the reading that I received matches challenges and choices that I am currently facing in my life. In fact, there are three that fascinated me in particular with this reading. While I am never surprised at such affirmations, I am still delighted every time they come my way. I am currently writing a theatrical solo show (I will be doing a reading at Chicago Dramatists on August 29th at 2:00 p.m.). I was truly amazed with how much the body scan paralleled the issues that I noted as I flushed out the material for the show.

To start with, the largest chakra center on my body is my 2nd chakra, located in the sacral area. It was markedly larger than all of the rest. The 2nd chakra is related to the sexual organs, large intestine, urinary tract, lower vertebrae, pelvis, appendix, bladder, and hip area. The mental and emotional issues related to it are: chronic lower back pain, sciatica, ob/gyn problems, pelvic/ lower back pain, sexual potency or lack, and urinary problems.

Interestingly enough, I just returned from the doctor regarding lower back/sciatica issues. Along with the physical match, there was also an emotional one as well. Since returning from India, on several occasions as I practice deeksha each day, I set an intention for causeless joy for others and myself. This chakra is the joy center, and while I was warned that a larger 2nd chakra could turn into pleasure-seeking obsession and work-related apathy, I was not concerned. Apathy and non-productivity are not issues I struggle with. In fact, if anything, I am challenged with the opposite issue overwork. This reading was an affirmation of the focus that I have been putting on experiencing the magic of causeless joy in my life.

The second revelation I had in the reading related to my 3rd chakra, located at my solar plexus. The organs related to this chakra are the abdomen, stomach, upper intestine, liver, gallbladder, kidney, pancreas, adrenal gland, spleen, and middle spine. Courage, trust, fear, self-esteem, self-care, self-confidence, self-respect, decisionmaking, personal honor, and sensitivity to criticism all factor into the makeup of this chakra. In my case, unlike the 2nd chakra, this energy center was particularly small. This did not surprise me. I know that self-acceptance is central to my soul’s journey in this lifetime. What surprises me however, is that Susan mentioned that for those of us who are particularly intuitive and sensitive, if we are exposed to toxic individuals or situations on an ongoing basis, that too can cause this chakra to close in a protective stance against the negative energy. Suffice to say that I am currently struggling with a couple of particularly toxic relationships in my life at this time. A gesture that Susan shared to inhibit the negative energy from entering into that area is to place one of your hands against the solar plexus (with the palm of your hand facing outwards).

This sets a protective energetic barrier in motion, after which you can focus on further in that area, blocking the negativity from permeating your energy field. Of course, she reminded me that we must not personalize the negativity of others. If they are toxic for us, the energy is theirs, not ours.

Now back to the event. Based in Midland, Michigan, the Lewis’s have a plethora of knowledge and experience in spiritual healing.

On this particular occasion they offered aura photographs, along with short one-on-one readings of the photos and a one-hour lecture on the subject.

Finally, a photo was also taken of my head and the energy that surrounds it. When I matched it with a photo on their website, it mirrored a photo that listed the colors as creative, emotional, and entrepreneurial. In my particular case, however, a large energy block appeared around my lower face and neck. It was so strong that it was difficult to see my face on the photograph. Susan shared that this block was most likely related to lack of self-care. What can I say? Guilty as charged! In fact, I reference the daily nonstop treadmill that I live in my show as well. assist in the healing. While getting this reading was invaluable, if you are conscious, intuitive, and honest with yourself, you can get a sense of which of your chakras may be out of balance.

While Susan and Jack offer chakra-tuning sessions, there are also several simple techniques you can use to balance and cleanse them. One of the easiest and best suggestions came to me from psychologist and medical Seven Chakra Centers anthropologist, Dr. Alberto Villoldo when we were recording an audio program together several years ago. He suggested the following: when you shower, spin your fingers counter-clockwise in front of each of the chakras to open them. Then envision the water of the shower cleansing them. See any unneeded energy sloughing off, and then see each chakra clear, balanced, and vibrant. Then spin your fingers clockwise in front of each to close them. During your daily meditations, you can also envision each chakra as balanced, vibrant, and healthy. As we all know, intention is very powerful, so doing so can actually shift the energy.

In the end, it comes down to “How many times do we have to be given the same message, and when are we going to take action?”

For many years I have known that I need to slow down, and I know that now is the time. As they say, the universe starts with a whisper, yet if we don’t heed it, that whisper turns into a yell. So if you are an over-doer like myself, I encourage you to join me as I stop, quiet my busy life, and smell the roses (that is, AFTER I complete my solo-show, kick up my books and audio marketing, finish my latest training modules, create some new seminars, and…and… and.

ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Health in Astrology

by Kaye Berjot This month we will discuss the topic of health in astrology. It’s a topic that is top of mind for me, because I’ve recently struggled through a case of walking pneumonia. Although, it didn’t land me in the hospital it sure did make me take a good look at how I was too busy taking care of other things before taking care of myself.

When you walk out of a doctor’s office with 4 different prescriptions to cure something that could have easily been healed months ago, it makes one reconsider how important health is in your life. Therefore, in this article, we will look at what sign, house and planet help you to become better acquainted with your own health needs.

Virgo is known as the Virgin in astrology. It symbolizes purity, before becoming influenced by others words or way of thinking.

It is the whole self before being split into two. It is the child that has grown into the young adult and who hasn’t yet been controlled by circumstances.

If there were a sign that helped you hone in on your earth bound health needs, then Virgo would be that sign. Remember, Virgo is an earth sign and it is Virgo that taps into the part of you that’s untainted. So, what happens when, it becomes influenced by external forces? The short answer, you become ill. This illness can show up in many forms but the reason that it happens is because we don’t want to admit that our “crops” have become influenced by outside circumstance.

Recently, I was speaking with my good friend, fellow intuitive and tarot reader, RoseWolf about The Hermit. The Hermit is the card that represents Virgo in the tarot deck and I’m talking about it because astrology gets really interesting when we start to merge it with other esoteric dynamics like tarot and numerology.

Her interpretation of the Hermit was that of the individual that doesn’t go out and have the real conversation because they don’t want to be told that something has been tainted. This resonated with me, because I look at Virgo in a chart as representing purity but it should also be noted that as we get older and have experiences something happens to that purity and it becomes something else. Some might say that the something else is discernment of what is healthy and of what isn’t.

The 6th house, is naturally ruled by Virgo and if you remember from previous articles the 6th house is the house of health and service to others. In that article I mentioned that you have to first take care of yourself before moving on to the 7th house of partnerships. The 6th house is the one right before the self meets others, so it’s very important to nurture that part of self and to make sure 12 Conscious Community - SEPTEMBER 2015

that it is grounded and rooted in the right frame of mind.

As with everything in life, we evolve through the houses and various happenings impact how we feel about ourselves. Those circumstances can make us experience great highs as well as great lows, but when we dwell on the great lows we inadvertently carry burdens that we shouldn’t and therefore we unintentionally cause ourselves great harm. If you take a look at the sign that is in your natal 6th house, it will give you a good indication of what allows you to be healthy. For example, if you have Gemini in your 6th house, verbal expression will allow you to release whatever is ailing you or clearing out the no longer necessary will help if you have Pisces in that house. I can’t reiterate enough, the importance of having access to your natal chart so that you can best see how these houses work for you.

Mercury is the ruler of Virgo. Because, Virgo rules thought and interpretation this communication is largely mental. We all know the importance of thinking and have heard the phrase that thoughts become reality. Planets have a tendency to take on whatever sign or house they are placed in within your natal chart.

So if you have Mercury in Libra, this would indicate communication with others and if it is in your 9th house it would indicate understanding how to communicate either mentally or verbally.

So what would be required for the individual is to communicate to others what they have learned in order to release the tension that is prohibiting healing.

So, how do we put all of this together to achieve a healthier you during the month of September? First, get your chart, if you don’t yet have it. You can find a free chart on astro.com. Second, locate Virgo in your chart, if it’s in the first house then you are looking at how to create a healthier you or if in the 4th house how to create a healthier home. 3rd look at where Mercury is in your chart, if it’s in your 10th house of career in the sign of Sagittarius, then it would be about understanding how to communicate what you want to be remembered or known for in society.

The key to freeing yourself of any hidden illness is to find its source and that requires us to do some analyzing, which is a Virgo trait. It requires us to not deny our needs, which is a lesson from the Hermit. It requires us to remain true and pure to ourselves before taking care of everything else, which is a 6th house characteristic. It requires us to communicate our needs, which is a gift of Mercury. And it requires us to forgive the circumstances that have brought us to unhealthy places and to have faith in ourselves that we can come back to a place of wholeness, that is a gift from Pisces who sits across the table from Virgo.

One of my favorite movies is The Truman Show¸ in which a man has unknowingly been born and raised on a massive TV set on which the entire world watches his life unfold. Eventually Truman begins to discover that the life he has been living is contrived, and he attempts to escape the tiny world in which he is trapped. But the producer of the show cleverly throws up obstacles to make Truman turn back.

An interviewer asks the TV show’s producer Christof, “Is there any way that Truman might escape?” Christof answers, “Truman can get out any time he wants. The truth is, he prefers his world.”

A greater teaching has never been spoken. While many of us complain about situations in which we feel entrapped, on some level we are choosing them. The reasons for our choices prevail at a level below our conscious mind. The spiritual teacher Bashar (bashar.org) calls this dynamic “the motivational mechanism.”

Every living thing does what it believes will bring it the greatest reward. The rub, in human terms, is that quite often the reward we perceive is not in our best interest. Working into the night and weekends may push us up the corporate ladder, but ultimately such a drive damages our health and relationships. Fighting with our ex may punish him or her or keep us feeling “right,” but meanwhile our soul gets tattered and our inner peace is reduced to nil. Grabbing a drink or joint may take the edge off of our current discomfort, but the issues that trouble us remain until we face and handle them.

A woman phoned in to my radio program (hayhouseradio. com) and reported that since her divorce a few years earlier, she had gained a great deal of weight and now she wanted to lose it.

Considering the principle of the motivational mechanism, I asked her, “Is there any way you might believe that your weight is serving you?”

After some moments of consideration, she explained, “The end of my marriage and my divorce were horrendous and I feel terrified to get involved in another relationship. I believe that if I were thinner, men would find me more attractive and I would have to deal with having another man in my life. I’m just not ready for that.”

This was a huge aha! for this woman. We talked about the possibility of her simply choosing to not be in a relationship, if she was truly not ready for one, and not needing to use the weight as a buffer against potential emotional pain. She liked that idea 14 Conscious Community - SEPTEMBER 2015

and decided to explore that pathway.

If you are not reaching a goal you say you want, ask yourself, “What greater reward do I perceive in not having this?

How do I believe my current situation serves me more than getting what I say I want?” You must be extremely honest in your introspection. If you are, you will unveil the perceived payoff.

Looking squarely at the perceived payoff will likely reveal that it is not a real payoff, and the payoff of achieving your goal would ultimately be greater.

We might also state the key question of the motivational mechanism in this way: Why would you continue to engage in a behavior or pattern you say you do not prefer?

We step into tremendous empowerment when we realize that everyone is always acting out of choice. The reasons for many choices may be insane, but choices they are. People get all kinds of hidden rewards through fighting, complaining, worrying, being sick, and engaging in dramas. To truly help yourself or others, you must hold the hidden reasons up to the light. Richer rewards are available than the ones the ego delivers. Spending rewarding time with our family and friends yields more pleasure than working to death. Harmonizing with our ex brings far more peace than keeping the fight up. Facing and mastering our self-doubts or fears gets us far more mileage than a drink or joint. What we ask for is not outrageous. What we settle for is.

The truth is, we prefer our world. Yet there is a greater world we would far more prefer. For Truman to escape, he had to discover the true man. So it is for all of us. There is one within us that truly recognizes what would bring us happiness. When we heed the call of our vision, the lights on the movie set go out and we find ourselves standing in broad daylight in a world we have chosen for ourselves rather than one that others have chosen for us.

3) Find a way to unplug your wireless network at night. WiFi shoots life-damaging frequencies in your air space 24/7. If you could at least turn it off at night, that would alleviate the weakening effects to a degree.

By Phyllis Light How do you know that you are being energetically damaged on a daily basis, when you can’t see what’s hitting you? How do you know that you are aging faster or getting weaker over time, when you can’t see anything bombarding you? We are all extremely challenged in the area of health and well-being today, because the enemy we are fighting is in stealth mode and can’t be perceived.

When you are aware that something is hitting and harming you, you have choices. You can move away from the source of the attack. Or, you can take a different path or route to avoid the problem. But what about all the life-damaging frequencies that hit you 300,000 times per minute in most U.S. cities?

You can’t see the frequencies, and you don’t realize that they are damaging you energetically and physically. Thus, you don’t take any action to protect yourself. You think that the stress and fatigue you are feeling is normal, and you continue to participate in your daily life, unaware of the real reason you are feeling so tired and sometimes sick.

As early as 1984, The Wall Street Journal started reporting on voltage from high power lines were causing problems with the dairy herds that grazed near them. In 1987, The Wall Street Journal wrote about: “New Studies Strengthen Suspected Links Between Electromagnetism and Cancer.” In 1989, the Des Moines Register’s Science section reported on the challenge of electric and electromagnetic fields, saying, “… It is a very widespread problem for modern society because we are electrified everywhere.”

In 1990, Dr. Robert O. Becker studied the bioeffects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and discovered that "many illnesses have been linked to exposure to electromagnetic fields: weakened endocrine and immune systems which, in turn, lead to more allergies, asthma, cancer, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, headaches, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), autism, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Environmental Illness, and a speeded-up aging process. The type of magnetic fields given off by power lines, indoor wiring and household appliances caused human cancer cells to permanently increase their rate of growth by as much as 1600% and to develop more malignant characteristics."[1] Twenty-five years ago, before cell phones were even invented, I was “standing on the rooftops” shouting, “People, these frequencies, they’re not good for you.” I had been exhausted at that point, and gratefully met a scientist who had been studying the effects of EMFs on the body. was able to figure out “what was wrong with me”!!!! When the enemy is invisible, it’s very hard to diagnose the problem!!

Now, twenty-five years later, we not only have the challenge of sitting in front of our computers and getting weakened by the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) coming from them, but we now carry our computer around in our breast pocket (or nearby purse)!

Our “computers” (i.e. “smart phones”) are with us 24/7, and right next to our bodies for much of that time.

Research has shown that the EMFs and other damaging frequencies (from overhead radio, TV and satellite transmissions, smart meters, GPS frequencies that blanket the globe. etc.) disrupt the pineal and pituitary gland, the master glands of the hormonal system. This can translate into a speeded up aging process (notice how many men are going bald at an earlier age), along with sleep disorders.

The pineal gland runs sleep and brain function, and many people are challenged in those two areas in a huge way. If you look at the rise of the use of sleeping pills in our world (as reported by ABC news, USA Today, NY Daily News, etc.), you can see how sleep problems have been on the rise. The life-damaging frequencies continue to fill the air waves more and more, as the use of technology increases. It’s unreal what we are up against, and for the most part, no one has a clue, since the source of the problem is invisible.

What Can You Do About It The challenge is huge, as the frequencies are everywhere. And even if you don’t have a wireless network in your home, your neighbors probably do, and it is passing through YOUR air space.

However, there are a few things you can do to alleviate some of the burden on your physical and subtle bodies.

1) Don’t keep your cell phone glued to your body. I know this may be challenging for you, but find a way to keep it off your body. Men, if you have to get some kind of bag to carry it in, so be it. You don’t want to keep it on your body. Create a new habit of carrying it as far from you as possible.

2) Decrease your use of blue tooth. Wearing the blue tooth ear piece is both putting the damaging frequencies near your brain, along with keeping the energy of the battery near your brain. All things electric, electronic, or battery-powered create an unnatural electromagnetic field that is damaging to the human energy field and body. Blue tooth hits you on two counts and should be

4) Unplug your computer at night. Some people leave their computer on saying, “This is better for the longevity of my computer.” You want to change that to turning your computer off at night, saying, “This is better for the longevity and well-being of my body” (and the bodies of all who live in your space).

5) When you are on your computer, do your best to do 30 minutes on, followed by 30 minutes off. That way, you are giving your mind and body a much-needed rest and ability to recuperate to some extent.

6) Avoid having a smart meter installed at your home. Many of my clients have been getting headaches and other physical challenges from having these frequencies broadcast into their living space. It might require paying extra, but worth making the effort.

7) Do a pat-down when you go through airport security vs. going through the airport scanning device. Although more inconvenient, a pat down will be a more positive experience than going through the device which bombards you with frequencies that can weaken your immune system over time.

We live in a crazy world energetically. I do my best to help people in as many ways as possible. By the grace of God I was made aware of the hazard of electromagnetic fields and frequencies many years ago, and I am now in a position to help people understand what they are up against, and what they can do to help themselves.

Technology isn’t going away… so we need to become aware of how it is impacting us, and what we can do to protect and heal ourselves. Awareness is the first step. Without being aware of the problem, finding solutions will remain impossible.

Everything I Needed to Know I Learned from Animals

The more I think about this, the truer it becomes. When I was younger, I spent far more time with animals than I ever did with people. My first experience was working at the zoo as a volunteer when I was around 12. I learned the value of hard work cleaning up after and preparing food for the many animals in the zoo. I learned how much love they can give a person in very unexpected ways. It can be hard thinking of an animal in captivity and the circumstances that led up to their arrival, yet it taught me to ask the questions, to explore the why of certain decisions, and if nothing else it opened me up to a whole other level of exploration of man’s connection to the creatures that we share this earth with. Every day, I still learn something new from the horses.

They are very good at reminding me that I don’t have all the answers. These are some of the things that I have learned from the animals in my life:

How to let go- Horses can in one moment set off in a flight response, evading a predator in the wild, or running from something scary in their domesticated home, and in the next minute shake it off and go back to grazing. They have this amazing ability to shift from the “flight or fight” response and return back to normal by literally shaking it off and moving the energy through.

They can have a heated or high energy exchange with another member of the herd, and within minutes everything returns to normal. No one holds a grudge in a herd; life just is what it is.

This ability to slide up and down the scale accessing energy to match what a situation calls for, then letting it go and returning to a more neutral state is a skill that we teach in equine-assisted learning. Imagine how much better life would be if we could let go of the past and live in the moment?

How to show compassion – I am an admitted YouTube watcher. There are multiple videos of hippos helping other animals in difficult situations. I once watched a video of a hippo helping an impala cross a swift river, and one of a hippo helping a zebra fend off a crocodile attack. Hippopotamus is Greek for “water horse” or “river horse,” and to me horses have always been a sort of gatekeeper or watcher. Maybe hippos are the keepers of the

How to be resilient- I have had the rare privilege to work with elephants, for only a short time, yet they made such an impression on me. Not just their size, but something in their eyes shows such depth. Some of their stories are so heartbreaking it can be difficult to hear. Researchers have observed elephants in the wild exhibit what we would call “grief” behavior when a tragedy happens. Yet even in the face of their struggles and loss, they have this ability to be resilient and persevere even as the hardship continues in their daily life. It is a trait we see in many animals that have experienced unspeakable abuse in their past, yet are able to come back and continue their life making connections with others of their species, and with humans. Sometimes I feel that they have a better understanding of what being resilient means than we do.

How short life is- The one thing that I find hardest in being closer to nature and spending time in husbandry for other animals, is that their lifespans can be shorter than ours. We have to watch them pass away far more frequently than our human counterparts.

Sometimes those passings are not without trauma. It has been a privilege to work with every single one of them, and even if I cannot express the impact they have had on my life, or all that I have learned, it has been an honor. They remind me that our time here is short, and that it is a waste to spend time and energy in anger or resentment. They remind me to live in the present moment, bearing witness to the amazing cogs and wheels of the mechanism of nature working in harmony. They remind me that there are things that I can’t explain or that I can’t see, yet it doesn’t mean they aren’t real. I can’t see the threads that connect us all together, yet I can feel that we are all one. I can have a sense of how we are not just on this earth, yet that we are OF the earth. That is the greatest lesson.

How to play- During my course of study I worked at a research center studying dolphin-assisted therapy. It was my first exposure to animals helping people in this way. I loved the fact that the dolphins were given a choice in their participation in sessions, and that great pains were taken to keep their habitat as natural as possible with the pods intact. It was an awesome sight to watch how they interacted with each other, and played for fun. Their social interactions were so much like human-to-human interaction that it was hard not to think of them in that way. It was almost as if I could share in their joy and their fun.

How to wash my hands- Raccoons have very soft skin on their paws that is extremely sensitive to touch. One organization I worked for had a blind raccoon that spent much of her time with her hands in the water. She washed her hands in it, dipped her food in it, and even washed her face in it. She would then lay her paw flat on the bars, and wait for me to place my hand against hers. I loved to feel the softness of her paw, and I would like to think it was the contact she was asking for. You know how clever they can be if you have ever tried to keep them out of something! I always appreciated the fact that she washed her hands before touching mine.

How to share- If you have ever watched the television series Meerkat Manor, you can get a sense of their evolved culture.

Not to mention they are just a riot to watch. If you watch closely you will see how they share with each other. Researchers have observed them in the wild and captivity sharing food with one another, and attending to the needs of younger members of their gang. They also share the job of raising the young ones, reminding us of the value of sharing responsibility.

rivers. I have never worked with them, yet they seem to have the ability to demonstrate great compassion for other animals outside their species. Compassion is a human emotion, and it can be dangerous or anthropomorphic to talk about a human emotion in terms of an animal. Those of us who try to understand what can’t be seen have a sense of something much greater than just behavior or instinct.

How to forgive- In Frans de Waal’s work studying primates over the years, he researched the aggressive and competitive behaviors they displayed. As he grew in his experience with them, he learned that they had the same capacity for reconciliation and forgiveness as they did for competition or aggression. He observed two chimps coming back together after a fight, and other behaviors that would lead us to believe they could forgive one another, and have a continued relationship afterward. This is seen not just in chimps, but also in other animals that live in communities.

Maybe they have learned that forgiveness is not just good for the one but is good for the whole.

The Shared Heart New Dimensions of Relationship

Against All Odds...Hope In the 2000 movie, Where the Heart Is, 17-year-old Novalee Nation (played by Natalie Portman), while crossing the country in search of a new life, is abandoned by her loser boyfriend at a small town Walmart store.

Last week, Joyce and I witnessed an eerily similar story. Driving north through the Sacramento Valley on Highway 5, we saw a sign for a California Welcome Center in Anderson and pulled off to have dinner in our camper. While I was heating up some soup, it was getting dark outside, and we noticed a young woman pushing a baby stroller up to the now closed facility. She started setting up her “home,” basically just a blanket to lie on, in a semi-protected alcove outside one of the locked doors. I was finishing preparing dinner, so Joyce and our four-year-old golden retriever, Rosie, went to say hello.

She came back and told me the young woman’s story. Lucinda was dropped off by her boyfriend at a Walmart across the street one and a half years ago. He promised to wait for her outside in his car.

Perhaps he got the idea from the movie, for he, too, drove off. She has been homeless ever since, and she told Joyce in a clear, calm voice, “He’ll be back to pick me up.”

I had to check on her myself, so I went over to her. Rosie ran ahead. By now they were best buddies. While she petted Rosie, I asked, “Would you like some soup?”

“No thanks.” Her voice was actually chipper. “I had dinner already.” I wondered if it was at a homeless shelter.

Determined to help, I then asked, “Do you need any money?”

“No thanks. I’m fine.”

It surprised me that she actually sounded fine, but also seemed to not want to talk very much. I glanced at her total possessions, a blanket to lie on, another blanket to put on top of her, and a very few other things in the baby stroller. Rosie and I said goodnight to her and walked back to our camper to have dinner.

Joyce and I talked about this very unusual woman. The experienced therapist part of ourselves had to label her as deeply in denial, and most likely mentally ill in some way. A normal person doesn’t wait a year and a half after being abandoned. Something just didn’t add 22 Conscious Community - SEPTEMBER 2015

up. She was very clear in her speech and thought, at least from the little we heard. Against all odds, she seemed to be convinced that her boyfriend would be coming back for her.

Who are we to deny her this hope? Who are we to tell her he will never come back for her, that this is a classic Cinderella fantasy, waiting to be rescued by her prince? Something in her is simply convinced, and is hanging on to hope.

There is the term “false hope.” Can hope ever really be false?

Maybe improbable, yet never false. Someone hopes their terminal cancer can be healed. It’s unlikely, yet not impossible. I’m hoping I can heal my knee without having to have a knee replacement.

My doctors are skeptical, yet I have something in my healing regimen that few doctors believe in. It’s hope…and the power of prayer. I’ve seen what prayer can do. It’s a power that makes the improbable very possible.

That’s the real secret about hope. It’s a spiritual practice! Hope is, in fact a prayer. You can’t hope without praying. The homeless young woman’s hope is her prayer for her beloved. To us, he is a loser boyfriend. You have to be a loser to abandon someone like that.

What if he goes on to learn valuable lessons about love, and selfforgiveness, and does return a new man, asking her forgiveness?

Improbable, we say, yet not impossible.

Remember the often quoted lines from 1 Corinthians 13, about faith, hope, and love, with love being the most important. Perhaps that’s so, yet I believe faith and hope are contained within love, and love within faith and hope. How can you really separate these three vital ingredients? When you hope with all your heart, you are living in love. To have faith is to open up to the power of love. And when you love, you are living in a state of hope and faith.

Many years ago, after I betrayed Joyce by having sex with her best friend, I remember how deeply I held onto hope. I hoped she would see my changes, and learn to trust me again. I hoped we would grow into even more love and connection. I spoke this hope out loud to her during the times when she was in deep pain and anger. She has always told me how much this helped her in the dark moments.

Don’t ever lose hope, whether it’s for a new relationship, a better relationship, a more fulfilling job, having children, having a better

relationship with your children, or getting through health challenges. When you feel your hope, you are in a state of prayer.

One of our beloved teachers, Pearl Dorris, often used to say, “What your attention is upon, you become.” Put your attention upon hope, and you become what you hope for. Remember, hope is not just a verb. It’s also a state of being. You can live in a state of hopefulness, and in that state there is also love, faith, and happiness.

An 85 year old man walks out into the middle of a city park and begins to do a strange form of movement. As you watch he demonstrates an unusual spryness and uncharacteristic flexibility for someone his age. A dance-like pattern begins to manifest itself—elusive, beautiful, but radiating a power that isn’t just a flow, but explosive and effortless. As you watch this old man practice you realize that what is happening is not an exercise in stretching, or cardio, but a spiritual exercise of reverse aging.

What he was doing is called Tai Chi Chuan (Grand Ultimate Fist), a special and ancient exercise that has been used for centuries to combat aging and improve health. To be an expert at the true form of Tai Chi Chuan is able to be able to combine Qi Gong, meditation, and Kung Fu (martial arts) all in the same form. This triad of mind, body, and spirit is essential to Tai Chi. There are numerous clinical studies demonstrating the power of Tai Chi Chuan and millions of practitioners over many centuries can attest to its powerful benefits. Many popular movies also discuss its power in self-defense, practical combat, and strategy. These larger than life abilities actually exist and can be witnessed in practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan. To have these skills, one must practice consistently, learning from a proper instructor; with this strategy an older adult can often defeat a young man in his prime.

Qi Gong simply means moving with proper breathing; Qi Gong exercises are simple to create; each exercise offers different benefits. The highest levels of Qi Gong exercises are very formal routines that are recipes for life extension and are a part of achieving a life-extended state known as Taoist immortality.

Reaching for Heaven and Earth Qi Gong: Reaching for Heaven and Earth is one exercise where you can actually see the process working right away. Whereas most Qi Gong exercises take a few days or weeks to notice the changes that are occurring in your body, this exercise gives an immediate physical indicator that it is working. As you raise one hand up and the other one down, you will notice that the lower hand will darken to a blotchy red and the upper hand will change to a lighter color.

Here, Yin energy can be seen as the lessening of blood flow and Yang energy can be seen as the increasing of blood flow.

Follow these steps: 1. Stand with you feet shoulder width apart.

2. Put your hands in front of you, palms facing each other, solar plexus level. Hold them just far enough apart so you can feel the energy (heat) in both hands. Move the hands in a small circle.

• Reduces heart problems

3. Inhale and exhale naturally while feeling the energy.

• Strengthens the immune system: aids in preventing the common cold

4. Separate the hands with the left hand up above your head and the right hand down behind the left leg. Follow the right hand with your head and keep your eyes on your hand which is going behind you.

5. As you inhale, stretch the left hand up as high as it will go and the right hand down as far as it will go. Hold your breath for about 15 seconds, then exhale and bring your hands back to center and move the hands in a small circle again.

6. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 above—except this time, put the right hand up in the air and the left hand behind the right leg. (See Photo #4) Stretch the right hand up as high as it will go and the left hand down as far as it will go. Hold your breath for about 15 seconds then exhale and bring your hands back to center and move the hands in a small circle again.

Alternate having the left hand up and with having the right hand up: repeat this exercise at least 5 times on both sides.

Confirm that you are doing this exercise correctly: When doing this exercise, the hand that is down will turn red when it comes back to the center. The hand that was up in the air will be a lighter color. (See Photo #5) This is a visual confirmation that the blood is flowing and the energy is circulating throughout the body, balancing the Yin and Yang energy.

This exercise has been reported to give the following benefits: • Relieves constipation.

• Stimulates small and large intestines • Relieves arthritis in hands, arms and shoulders

Anyone can balance Yin and Yang energy in the body by practicing this simple Qi Gong exercise.

Neo-Napsters and the Devaluation of Music For most of the people I’ve been speaking with since Apple’s big announcement on June 30th, about Apple Music, their new streaming music service, nothing major happened.

Just about every musician I’ve spoken to has a very different reaction, from their perspective as a music producer and content creator. It reminds me of the cultural shift and devaluation of music that occurred when Napster first came on the scene, in 1999.

Because the implications are so enormous, I wanted to share two of the most insightful and thoughtful analyses from a music journalist and a musician.

Although I’ve never met them, I felt an instant camaraderie when I read their blogs.

I think you’ll find what they have to say very thought-provoking if you’re someone who loves music, no matter what genre.

LP Albums, CDs, Downloads, Streaming: Evolution or Deevolution?

I was introduced to the work of Anil Prasad by my associate Diana Ziegler. At first, I was a bit shocked by his intensity, though as I read further, I understood that indie New Age musicians like me are affected in the same way as most major label artists.

Anil Prasad is the founder and editor of Innerviews: Music Without Borders, the world’s first online music magazine, launched in 1994.

He compares the current situation with corporate music streaming services to the tobacco industry.

In his article “A Fair Music Streaming Model is Possible: Why Artists and Indie Labels Must Emancipate Themselves from Big Music,” Prasad writes, “Spotify, Apple Music, Google/YouTube, Rhapsody, and the rest of the streaming services have officially taken control of the music industry. Your [Musicians’] art is nothing but software in the cloud for them. It’s content as a service.”

We look at commercials, we are bombarded with social media posts on what it is to be beautiful, what standards we must uphold, from television to magazines, it is everywhere.

What does it all have in common? It targets our minds.

In order to start a better health regimen, we have to tackle a very important element in the equation to better health and better health esteem: our minds. Our minds are powerful tools in our weight loss, or any other goal that has to do with bettering our bodies and getting the most out of them. Approaching this in a way that targets the mind structures we may or may not be aware of can dismantle some of our most resilient doubting beliefs about our own abilities as well as our own worth. Do we want to look beautiful, or feel beautiful? Which is more important?

Our minds can trigger many different bodily processes, as we all know and have felt the “fight or flight” symptoms, when an acute stressor is in our environment, we get startled, our heart rate goes up, our pulse is out of control, we are more alert, and we also produce cortisol, the stress hormone. However, this shuts down other bodily functions, for preservation. The stomach is one of them, and hence digestion becomes very difficult. Bruce Lipton, a consciousness pioneer in the field of biology, explains this. He mentions that when we are in fear mode, in alert mode, we cannot grow, we have no energy left.

How else can we grow if we are stuck in a stressful environment?

Better yet, how can we grow and allow our bodies to thrive if we are in a stressful mind environment? Well, the mind processes and thinks too many thoughts to count on a daily basis, and worrying about something puts us in an endless spiral of nonsense scenarios that will never happen, however, they steal our energy. This also puts the body into a fearful, agitated state. The mind is powerful, in that it can trigger stress hormones, and also “feel good” hormones.

So which ones do we choose? It sounds simplistic, yet it is also difficult, because we are dealing with the mind.

So what tools do we have that can take us out of our head and into more good feelings? The mind can be an endless trap, and it not only forms scenarios that are worrisome, it also takes us into an altered perspective of our own reality, and others. If we criticize ourselves too harshly, then what tells us we are not also critical with others? Some reminders are: thoughts come and go. The past is over with, and we cannot control everything, so it is good to just let go. Also, what purpose does it serve us? It steals our energy that could be used towards much greater things. The way we see the world is through the mental lens, however, we must also be reminded to follow the heart, and allow joy into our being; and 36 Conscious Community - SEPTEMBER 2015

see the wonders of all aspects of ourselves. A world trapped in the mind is a scary, ego-run, mad world. What makes us feel alive?

What makes us laugh? We have to pursue those things with a bit more commitment, rather than be consumed by the everyday, mundane existence, the trivial worries. By allowing yourself to just open up to what could be, not what was, perhaps new horizons will reveal themselves. You are making room for surprises, spontaneity, and miracles!

Once we achieve a clearer mind state, we can start a meditation on becoming more present and aware of the body. Breathing is very powerful and special, remember to breathe in pure, new light, and breathe out the old toxins. Purify your body through breath. Also, start feeling your own heartbeat, or any type of bodily awareness, in a mindful meditation space. It can be 10 minutes out of your day while waiting for something, or riding in a car. It can be anywhere. Remember to listen to your body. Is it hungry? Is it thirsty?

It knows best. The mind pollutes it so much that we lose touch with our own physiology! I believe that is the main cause for most overeating, undereating, and even drug abuse. We lose too much awareness of our bodies, we torment them so much with the mind, that when they feel out of sync, we try to repair that hole with food, alcohol, or negative things for it. It is a vicious cycle that started with one big problem: the mind not allowing, not relaxing, and always judging.

Once you are aware of your body and your surroundings, you can appreciate yourself and everything that much more. One of the powerful books that inspires that present awareness to me is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, unmistakably, one of the most powerful books out there. It is incredibly enlightening, and bridges that gap that our society has placed on mind, body, and spirit. We are all three, yet we cannot identify with just one, can we? So treat your body as you would treat your most prized loved ones, or a child. It needs things, it craves things, and that is alright. Once we honor our bodies and their wondrous nature, we can fully appreciate ourselves and others. Sometimes it starts with silencing the mind in a terribly noisy world, ending that inner critic. Hasn’t (s) he been given too much credit already?

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS September... “Closing Up Shop”

by Elizabeth Summers As we write, say, even think the Number of a particular month, its influence of energy returns to us from the Universe. Perhaps not in a blatant way but be on alert for the subtle influence of each month’s themes.

As we move into the energy of September, our ninth calendar month of the year, even Mother Earth knows it is a time to let go of aspects of Nature. The Number Nine is a Number of completions. This energy sounds a bugle call that it is “all over but the shoutin”!

The energy of September is about letting things, go, finishing projects, getting ready for the energy of new starts in October.

Interestingly, folks can become “housecleaning fools” under the Nine energy, letting go of people, places and objects found throughout the house and their lives. September can bring a huge influx of merchandise to the doors of thrift shops and Goodwill stores.

The energy of the Number Nine is about humanitarianism, service, teaching, wisdom and going within to find one’s answers in life. I call this Number the “Mother Therese Number” as it is about caring and selfless service without any prejudice. This Number Nine influence brings forth all the energies of compassion, philanthropy and tolerance. Don’t’ be surprised if you find yourself focusing on some humanitarian venture in the month of September.

In the ancient Tarot, the Number Nine is the Hermit card…the answers are within as he holds the lighted lantern to show us the way. Those souls that have the Number Nine in one of their core Numbers Numerologically or even have it as part of their Birthday Number, find themselves as shamans, teachers, wisdom givers to others. The Number Nine energy is like a magnetic force that draws folks to them who wish to receive comfort and guidance that they need in the moment. Then, having been strengthened, souls move forward refreshed and renewed by the experience shared with them by the Number Nine.

On a lighter side, September can bring forth very domestic feelings may pop up in your psyche creating a desire to entertain all your friends, cook and/or bake yummy foods to share, redecorate parts of your home and just plain getting ready to hibernate for another few months.

Since we humans, as well as Mother Nature, move in patterns, it is important to know that the Number Nine is not an energy

of permanence. When our Personal life pattern of a nine year cycles arrives, people have a tendency to pass through our lives.

If a person is in a Personal Nine influence according to a Personal year formula, endings will occur, old loves can re-enter for a “final fling” and loved ones as well as animals may leave. Keep in mind, this is an “ending” vibration. Anything “started” under a Nine influence does not last or needs to be “redone” when year Number One Personal Year rolls around. Having said that, the adage “God closes a door but opens a window” is most appropriate.

Do watch your health in September. It is not uncommon for unusual aches and pains to arrive drawing ones’ attention to parts of the body where “stuck” emotional past life traumas memories are being stored and need to be addressed. Work with energy healers such as Reiki Masters to clear these “hanger ons” from your etheric energy fields. They are “cobwebs” of thoughts that are holding you captive like a spider in their web.

Astrologically, this September holds some powerful situations.

Finally! Saturn in Scorpio, after two and a half years of its residence in this sign, will be moving into Sagittarius to turn their lives upside down in some way. Can we hear a “hurrah” as this has been a toughy for many of us?

At the same time, we all move into our Fall Mercury Retrograde.

The very thought of this makes some folks cringe! Patience is the virtue here. Careful attention to electronics, appliances, contracts, car issues just might present themselves to you. The blessing here is that your Higher Self is drawing your attention to what needs to be improved upon only to make your life better. Just know, whatever is no longer working for you must be changed or let go…another “door” will be closing for you in the mercy of Mother/Father God and our Higher Selves. Breathe easier as mid-October will bring any needed relief.

Through all the twists and turns that September might bring into your life, just know that all is Divine and let’er rip! As Les Brown, the band leader of ole once said “shoot for the moon.

Inspirations from the IONS Conference For years I have been a loyal member of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (noetic.org). So, you know I was pumped when IONS announced that its 16th International Conference, The Science of Being/The Spirit of Community, would be in Oak Brook, Illinois, July 22-26. I’ve traveled to IONS conferences in Palm Springs, San Francisco, and Tucson. Now, the event was right in my backyard; I could attend and even save a few dollars by not staying at the hotel.

YOU INSPIRED ME! So to each of you, this is a “You Inspire Me” Card - sent from my heart to yours.

In case you’re not familiar with IONS, let me give you the thumbnail. When you visit the IONS website, the first thing that strikes you is the magnificent graphic header. A shadowed figure sits cross-legged with arms stretched to the sky before a backdrop of the Milky Way. The figure’s central core is a brilliantly colored spiral, a cross between the DNA Double Helix and the chakra system.

The tag line: The Science of What Connects Us.

This graphic contains a beautiful quote by The Dalai Lama. Each of you is like one of The Dalai Lama’s pebbles. Your inspiration continues to ripple throughout my heart, my mind, and my soul.

Of course, in this short column, I will not be able to share all of the inspirations that I encountered at the IONS Conference. Here are just of few of them:

The General Sessions

When we checked in for the conference, we were all given one “You Inspire Me” card that we were supposed to hand out to someone who inspired us during the event. Only one card? Impossible! I was inspired by so many folks during the conference that I decided to send out my own “You Inspire Me!” message to all the folks who moved me with the depth of their ideas and commitment to the transformation of consciousness.

Hmm ... the folks at Conscious Community Magazine and all the people who are featured in their pages also inspire me—so let me share that message with you too: 40 Conscious Community - SEPTEMBER 2015

Surely if all our ripples join together we can become a wave of transformation.

Most of the conference was devoted to the General Sessions, allowing us all to hear pearls of wisdom and information from a veritable pantheon of speakers. Here are some of those pearls: Embody Your Transformation NOW! Qigong Master Mingtong Gu from The Chi Center: Wisdom Healing Qigong (chicenter.com) led us through some simple exercises, and shared some mighty interesting information: •

The importance of practice was emphasized. Research shows that it takes 90 repetitions for the neurons to set a pattern in our brain.

•

Research also shows that 90% of our happiness is determined by internal factors. The breakdown is: Circumstances-10%; Intentional attitude and activities-40%; Internal conditioning or set point-50%.

Death Makes Life Possible: Noetic Perspectives on Life, Death, and Beyond: Marilyn Schlitz, PhD, is the producer and author of the Death Makes Life Possible film and book (deathmakeslifepossible.com). Her pearls:

Being Your True Story, the Pathway to Happiness: Don Miguel Ruiz (miguelruiz.com), author of The Four Agreements shared these pearls: •

Your world, the story of your life, is only true for you. It’s just a story. It’s not true, but you believe it.

If you don’t like the story, you are the only one who can change it.

•

The main character is you. Many try to change the story by changing the secondary characters. You can only change the story by changing the main character—you.

•

Well, there I go again! I’m running out of space! So let me close by telling you that the IONS Conference also included a galaxy of fascinating workshops. Unfortunately we each could only attend two of them. Fortunately, DVDs and MP3s of both the general sessions and the workshops were available for purchase. I can’t wait for my treasure trove of MP3s to arrive!

The two workshops that I attended were The Science of What’s Next: The Future of Consciousness Research, and Conscious Aging. Two quick pearls from those: •

Coming soon to your Smart Phone: IONS Scientist Adam M. Curry is working on a Random Number Generator (RNG) smart phone app. It is called The Collective Consciousness App (consciousness-app.com). Adam pointed out that for several decades, labs like Princeton University’s PEAR lab, and the Institute of Noetic Sciences have been exploring how human minds can have an unexplained influence on chaotic systems, such as devices called physical random number generators (RNGs).

Now, because of brilliant scientists like Adam, ordinary Jills and Joes like you and me can be part of the grand experiment.

•

This could be a bumper sticker: The Conscious Aging workshop is based on a program and workbook developed at IONS. Part of the process was breaking up into small groups of four. I was so proud of my group. For one exercise on transformative experiences, we had to summarize our take-away in one sentence. Our sentence, “Each of us was presented with different circumstances, but we made decisions and took control, becoming thrivers, not just survivors. We received kudos from the crowd. I can see it now on my bumper: “I am a THRIVER, not just a survivor.”

A Cosmology of Connection: Poet Drew Dellinger, PhD, (drewdellinger.org), author of love letter to the milky way: a book of poems, read a moving excerpt from one of his poems. Drew is also the founder of Planetize the Movement. His pearls included: •

We are in a crisis of worldview. We need a New Story because the old one doesn’t work anymore.

•

We can look at Martin Luther King Jr. as a cosmological thinker. In his last sermon, King gave us a model for making these connections by stressing that we are all interrelated, a network of mutuality. (Check out Drew’s website for his paper on this).

The Promise and Perils of Psychic Technologies: IONS Senior Scientist Dean Radin, PhD, presented a wonderful PowerPoint program filled with the latest developments in the science of consciousness. Some of his pearls: •

The U.S. government is way behind the curve when it comes to paying attention to consciousness research.

Dean has been invited to speak at government conferences and meetings in every developed country throughout the world—except the United States. Recently for example, he attended an Australian Leadership Retreat with 130 top leaders from the government, the military, etc. The topic was “Thinking the Unthinkable.” It was pretty depressing to hear about all the things that could suddenly plague the world, especially if there is what is being called threat multiplication. These include uncontrolled population, climate change, terrorism, and mutated viruses. Dean was invited to provide the rays of hope, the science of what is possible through transformation of consciousness.

One of the things that Dean pointed out was that in 1900 the big threat was considered to be Luminous Ether, which scientists of the time thought could lead to an ultraviolet catastrophe. Instead, that threat led to today’s information age. Dean and other cutting edge researchers believe that consciousness research can be one of the world’s salvations.

My Advice: Continue the exploration by checking out the websites mentioned in this column. I wish I could tell you that you, too, could get a set of those conference MP3s, but I couldn’t find a link for that on the IONS website (If I find out how to do that, I will share it with you). The next IONS Conference will be in two years. I plan to be there and so should you.

Tarot:The Flexibility Of The Three-Card Spread

Tarot card spreads are usually described as having “positions”. I prefer to use the term “elements” instead of “positions” as you will see as you read on.

These positions / elements are usually laid out in a specific order.

When element one and element two and so forth are laid out, a pattern will form when complete.

So after seeing this card spread you may feel I’m insane. I’m not.

OK I’m back. Don’t worry. It’s still just a three-card spread.

I worked out this spread to randomly find useful elements to questions. This forces you to see a question from a Most card spreads imply that the element’s meanings should not different perspective instead of a normal thinking mode. be changed. They remain the same from one reading to the next.

Furthermore, if the element’s meanings don’t seem to relate to my How the Random Three-Card Spread Works question, I should find a different card spread with elements whose meanings fit closer to the answers I seek.

This seems like the tail wagging the dog. We can change the element’s meanings to anything we choose; to things that directly pertain to the question being looked into.

A very common card spread many of you have heard of is the Three-Card Spread. Its elements are very basic and usually identified as Past, Present and Future. But Past, Present and Future doesn’t really answer too many questions. These elements can be changed to something more useful such as Strengths, Weaknesses and Opportunity (numbers A-1, B-6 and C-2 in the diagram shown). This would give us better results to objectives we are looking into when consulting the cards.

Another example of more useful elements could be demonstrated with a question concerning something such as opening up a coffee house. Elements of Location, Hours of Operation and Strategy, which are not shown on this chart, would be be useful in this situation. Here, the Three-Card Spread is not limited to the elements of Past, Present and Future. Finding elements that directly pertain to the question asked can create better answers in the reading.

We can also add more elements if we choose to. For example, change it to a four-card spread by using elements of What, Why, How and When.

Placing and associating a Tarot card into the three positions can offer new and better insights than will Past, Present and Future in most questions asked of the cards.

You can change these elements to your own liking as well. For example, change Assertive in column B to Fears, or change Timing in column A to Alliances. The elements will work fine as long as they can be associated to questions in some way. Or maybe you would like to replace Past, Present and Future with something like Restrictions, Obligation and Location. The list is endless and so is your imagination.

This technique forces us to look at various aspects of a question in ways not seen with normal trains of thought. And that’s intuitive. With randomly selected elements associated to the question being looked into, we can discover some very dynamic concepts in our readings and find innovative solutions to problems being looked into. It enhances our creative and intuitive minds wide open.

I hope you like this method of the Three-Card Spread. I can tell you from experience that it works with surprising results!
