Letter from the Publisher We have reached the half-way point of 2015 with minimal damage to our psyche and much progress in many areas except for the logjam in politics, both state and national. Those situations will ultimately resolve themselves but it may take considerably more time.

The feeling in my classes and presentations has been solidly enthusiastic and optimistic which is a very good sign. We have clearly turned an important corner with little concern about looking back.

The continued growth in the spiritual world is rewarding and refreshing. There is a shift of interest to healing as more people recognize their need and take action to address their situation. There are many new modalities being touted but most are a variation on a theme of older established processes. All healing ultimately comes from within so the modality won’t matter if the subject is not spiritually ready and able to receive the healing. Without a change in consciousness the healing will provide symptomatic relief but nothing more.

The Body Mind Spirit Expo in Tinley Park for a second year, was a success although attendance did appear to be down somewhat. The crowd was enthusiastic and eager to explore the vendor booths and the presentations. Attendance at the talks varied widely making it challenging to gauge public interest.

Celebrate Your Life returned to Chicago after a three-year hiatus. The roster of speakers was full of well-known authors and presenters, often competing with one another for audience share in the celebrity crammed schedule. It was like old home week for me, reconnecting with old friends and familiar faces but even those reunions were challenging due to the scheduling.

Our world has been visited by multiple tragedies in recent months, airplane and ship events with very heavy death tolls and few if any survivors. Few Americans have been casualties and the events themselves have not touched our shores in recent years.

Nonetheless, the messages are for the whole world, not just those directly involved. The message includes, “there is a better way,” but so far it has been lost on humanity.

Are we missing the signs or just ignoring them? The co-pilot that crashed his plane into the side of a mountain killing all onboard including himself was screaming out for help. But his cries went without response, until the fatal crash. As it is said, “hindsight if always 20-20.”

The Korean ship that went down with over 400 dead was a disaster waiting to happen, until it happened. The souls in these and other tragedies made an agreement amongst themselves to send a message to humanity in a dramatic and visible way, but I still don’t think it is being heard.

July is a slow month with no major spiritual events planned, so recharge, attend a class or two, and prepare for the August Body, Mind, Spirit Expo in Skokie. See you there.

Body Mind Spirit Expo 2015 Tinley Park Convention Center, IL June 6th & 7th, 2015

by Theresa Puskar On Saturday, June 6th I attended the Body Mind Spirit Expo at the Tinley Park Convention Center.

Usually when I attend such events, I focus most of my energy on the speakers, and then visit a couple of the vendor booths. However, my most recent visits have been different. I have been drawn to certain vendors over speakers. As is always the case, when I follow my inner guidance, I am always directed to the right people and circumstances. Such was the case at this Expo.

Soon after I arrived at the conference, Conscious Community Magazine Circulation Manager Kasia Szumal motioned me over to a nearby booth. I’ve learned through the years that when Kasia speaks, I listen. An energy healer herself, she is able to simultaneously walk the two worlds of business and spirit - and very well, I might add!

– Rose Angel The first of the booths that Kasia motioned me to was Rose Angel’s Angel Readings. When you meet Rose you get an instant feeling of genuine nurturing and affection.

Her warmth, along with her commitment to make a difference in people’s lives is obvious.

Soon after meeting me, she asked me how my name was spelled on my driver’s license, then she proceeded to channel my angel guides through automatic writing. A couple of minutes later she handed me a piece of paper upon which was the message she had received from my angel guides. I was fascinated with how 8 Conscious Community - July 2015

accurate that message was. To begin with, they referenced the fact that I had not been calling upon them much lately. This in fact had been true, for since my Awakening experience at the Oneness University in India, I spend most of my time connecting directly with my divine. In fact, interestingly enough, just recently I noted that I haven’t been communicating with my angels and guides. You see, a year or two ago someone made the statement; “So many people call upon their angels and guides, when in fact, it’s much more powerful and potent to communicate directly with your divine. Why would you connect with them over our Creator?” Odd as it may sound, once I heard this message, I felt a twinge of guilt whenever I called upon my guides. So now I rarely connect with my celestial supporters. I go directly to the Source. As I write this, I am reminded of the massive team of angels and guides that were there for me during my car crash in 2002. I think of how much and how often they have come to my rescue, providing me with powerful guidance throughout my life.

It’s funny how the ego works. I am fascinated as I become aware of how my mind filled with guilt and loyalty issues over my divine support team. I see that looming Catholic lack, guilt, and shame well up within me yet again. While I thought I had put so many of these feelings behind me, they never cease to amaze and surprise me!

About three quarters of the way down the page, Rose pointed out that she got a bit stuck in the automatic writing. While she forged on, she noted that her mind was questioning what she wrote. However, during the reading, I noted again how accurate and necessary the message was. It referenced my perception when difficulty arises. Again, this was something that had been ruminating in my brain lately.

After some additional prompting from Rose, I shared that I had been struggling with my own sense of lack, and the blocks I had imposed upon myself in relation to being well compensated for the metaphysical work that I do. She began writing again, and the message she shared set a huge “aha” light bulb off in my head. She said that I needed to separate my issues of lack

from my sense of personal success. She also reminded me that appreciation was important. She suggested that I focus on the things that I appreciated about each day, prior to going to sleep.

Of course, I had previously thought of this, and more than once I noted that I should start doing so. Without a doubt, this was a message that I really needed to hear once again. I have been focusing on expressing gratitude for all of the goodness that I experience each day since she shared this message with me. I add my reading with Rose Angel to the many life experiences that I am truly grateful for.

I found it interesting that, although I was challenged in finding an opportunity to meet with her, I had a Ellie Stewart and Theresa Puskar very strong sense that it was important that I did.

When I finally met with her, I was not disappointed. My hunch was right. Again, another affirmation that listening to that strong voice within never leads us astray!

I felt an instant connection when I spoke with Ellie. Once she opened my records, her energy became highly focused and very powerful. She asked if I had written or was planning to write a series or anthology of some kind. I explained that I had just finished printing my Terri anthology of seven children’s books. She encouraged me to move forward with them, and emphasized that I just need to say, “Yes,” and that once I did, things would move very quickly. She encouraged me to say “Yes” to moving forward in the next phase of my spiritual journey. She emphasized that once I do so, I must be willing to be of total service. Ellie had tapped into a resistance that I’ve been struggling with for quite some time. What a gift she was! At that moment, I realized that I had not fully committed to moving forward. Since her message, I have said a clear, deliberate, and exalted “Yes” to taking the next steps on my spiritual journey.

the experience means nothing. The message and the messenger were incredibly powerful. Chilled and sweet Ms. Ellie lit the much needed fire within my psyche. I so look forward to seeing how the universe will continue to co-conspire in my blessed and wondrous life!

Another very affirming realization that she shared took me back to my experience in India. She checked in on my divine connection, and stated, “You are directly connected. It’s as if the hands of the divine were placed right upon your head. You were filled with divine love, and since that time, your energy and the vibration of your books have grown.” I did not share my awakening experience at the Oneness University deepening process in India, nor the power of the deeksha blessing that I give and receive. She was unaware that with the deeksha, hands are in fact, placed upon the head to transmit the golden light of the divine into the mind and body. We didn’t spend too much time in my records – she explained that the energy was strong, and that she was freezing cold. ASTROLOGY BASICS 101 Buyer’s Remorse

by Kaye Berjot Over the past few months I have covered a lot of Astrological ground. I am slowly but surely working my way through a complex matrix of aspects that will move us from the basics to something a little more advanced than the basics.

Last month I talked about Pain Points and the role that Chiron plays in identifying those pain points. I personally love what Chiron brings to astrology, because as the wounded healer it allows us to take a closer look at the unseen ailments that can influence our lives.

This month I will take a look at Neptune and the role that it plays in what I like to call “Buyer’s Remorse.” Neptune brings an element of optimism and idealism to an astrological chart.

I would even go so far as to say that Neptune is the planet that provides us with a pair of rose-colored glasses.

From mid-June until mid-November, Neptune will go retrograde in the sign of Pisces, which is its naturally ruling sign. It will retrograde all the way back to its placement in the sky in midFebruary. Therefore, you may find yourself reevaluating or revisiting some of the topics from that time frame. Retrogrades are always good for that.

Oftentimes our illusions are shattered once we remove our rose-colored glasses. With that said, it’s always important to understand why we’ve put those rose-colored glasses on in the first place.

More often than not, what we imagine as being the right fit for us turns out to be something less than the ideal fit. Sometimes the opposite of that happens, meaning that what we’d imagined was the wrong fit ends up being the kick in the pants that we needed to move us in the right direction.

Unlike Uranus, Neptune gently disrupts our environment, and makes us take a look at our ways of tackling topics that cause us discomfort. This is where buyer’s remorse comes into play; because when we remove the glasses, what we experience isn’t exactly what we’d envisioned.

Neptune in Aries clouds our perspective of the motto “I am”, while Neptune in the 1st house keeps us trapped by the perspective of self.

Neptune in Taurus plays with our motto of “I have”, so sometimes we think that we have more or less of what we actually do have. Neptune in the 2nd house may keep us trapped by our own values.

Neptune in Gemini looks at our illusions of how we communicate to like-minded individuals, and can cause us to communicate ideals that float in the air yet never fully bring fruition.

Neptune in the 3rd house can confine us to a handful of ways of communicating that may or may not serve its purpose under changing conditions.

Neptune in Cancer focuses on our confusion concerning the proper way to take care of one’s self, while Neptune in the 4th house binds us to the ways of our upbringing, and what we’ve learned from matriarchal patterns.

Neptune in Leo asks us to take a good- hearted look at our willpower and the things that may cause us to lose momentum just at the point when we are about to achieve success. In the 5th house, Neptune requires us to understand the source of our creativity, and at the same time juggle the causes of inactivity.

Neptune in Virgo wants you to take a look at how you discern what’s healthy and what’s not. In the 6th house Neptune asks you to take a look at how you discern your day-to- day activities; basically, the question is, “is this healthy, or am I just feeding the most unhealthy aspect of self?”

In the sign of Libra, Neptune asks you, “Did you pick the right thing?” In the 7th house the question is, “is this the ideal partnership?”

For Scorpio, Neptune meets a formidable opponent because this is the sign of desire, and when Neptune meets desire there are no rose-colored glasses. After all, the heart wants what it wants.

In the 8th house, Neptune wants to know if you’re ready to take on the karma that will inevitably come from the outcome of the choices that you make.

In Sagittarius, Neptune is lost, because Sag is the sign of understanding. Sag understands all of the illusions, and from whence they came. In Sag, the illusions of Neptune have free reign, they can be as sincere and as real as any reality. With that said, when the rose-colored glasses come off, buyer’s remorse is at its greatest, because regardless of what action is taken, something will be learned. In the 9th house Neptune causes you to be bound by the things that you have learned, which can sometimes be everything and nothing.

Neptune in Capricorn causes you to look at your illusions concerning that which you have built and find stability in. While in the 10th house, Neptune focuses on careers and what you are known for. It asks, “Am I known for the best part of me, or the not so best part of me?”

Neptune in Aquarius has you look to focus on the things that you know, and can sometimes make you think that you know more or less than what you know. In the 11th house, Neptune asks you to take a look at the company that you keep.

The Power of Transformation

From the Heart The Alcoholic Saint

I heard about a fellow who set out on a spiritual quest to India. There he was recommended by word of mouth to find a particular saint who lived in a remote village. The seeker went to great lengths to travel to the village, where a shopkeeper told him he would find the saint under a certain tree, teaching disciples. Excited, the seeker made his way to the tree, yet instead of finding the saint, he saw a drunkard blabbing with a couple of guys. Disappointed, he returned to the shopkeeper and complained that he had given him bad information; all that he had found under the tree was a drunk. The shopkeeper told him, “That was the saint. He is actually a very advanced soul, yet his last lesson is to experience and overcome drinking. If you would have spent some time with him, you would have learned a lot.”

It is tempting to judge by appearances, to single out one trait of a person, and evaluate him or her by that trait. Yet we are multi-dimensional beings. There is more to each of us than the traits we judge as good or bad. My mentor once explained, “Alcoholics, drug addicts, and people in mental institutions are often highly sensitive souls. They cannot handle the harshness of the world, so they retreat into a private world. If you pierce beyond their addiction or mental illness, you will often find a very creative and loving being.”

The world we see is a result of the perception we choose, and the aspects we key in on. A friend and I were having lunch at the restaurant of a tropical hotel where a parrot sat in a cage near our table. When I went over to say hello to the Macaw, the restaurant manager saw me and grew nervous. “Stay away from that bird!” he called out. “He might bite you.” Although I was confident with the bird, I didn’t want to ruffle the manager’s feathers, so I stepped back.

During our meal I mentioned the bird to the waitress.

“Oh, Keoki is the sweetest bird. He will give you a kiss if you approach him.” She went to the parrot, and he gave her a sweet kiss on the cheek. I was stunned. Were those two people talking about the same bird? Then I realized that the restaurant manager was worried about liability, while the waitress valued connection more. Each person was seeing the bird through their own lens of perception—one based on love, and one based on fear. Each experienced the result of the perception they chose.

Even if you have chosen a fear-based perception, you can shift to a more rewarding perspective. This is the hidden gift of relationships that trouble us. When you aren’t getting along with someone, you have chosen to see that person through the lens of fear. The relationship as it is will persist (or another one like it will take its place) until you choose love instead. A Course in Miracles tells us, “Trials are yet lessons that you failed to learn presented once again, so where you made a faulty choice before 14 Conscious Community - July 2015

you now can make a better one, and thus escape all pain that what you chose before has brought to you.”

My partner had a friend named Cynthia who used to visit our house and chatter endlessly. I found her quite annoying. One day while I was standing on a ladder fixing a window on the second floor, Cynthia stood opposite me and blabbed while I was working. I fantasized about tossing her through the window, yet, being a sensitive new age guy, I restrained myself.

Then one day while I was receiving a massage, Cynthia came to mind. In my relaxed state my resistance was diminished, so I thought about her from a more peaceful vantage point. I realized that Cynthia was actually a very nice person. She had always been very kind to me and my partner. I had been basing my judgment of her on one particular trait. When I looked beyond that trait, I saw someone I truly liked. From that time on I enjoyed her.

Everyone is our teacher. Some teach us through joy, and others through challenge. Reframe challenging people as angels who have come to help you clean the glass of your perception.

Everyone is potentially lovable, yet we must choose to claim the potential of our relationship rather than the limits we have superimposed over it. When we reframe relationships as opportunities to experience love, they shift in our favor.

All perception is selective. From an infinity of choices of what we may see, we choose yet one. If you do a Google image search for “spectrum of light” you will discover that the physical eye sees yet a tiny range of the many different frequencies of light available. Our vision is quite limited, compared to what is out there. William Blake said, “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro’ narrow chinks of his cavern.”

Devils and angels are less about ultimate reality, and more about choice of perception. We cannot change the people around us, yet we can change how we see them. Then, regardless of what they do, we find inner peace, the only perception worth choosing.

To love thy neighbor is to see your neighbor clearly.

What Do Horses Teach Us About Being a Leader?

by Blair McKissock, MSEd, RYT It’s been said before that horses can teach us so much. They can teach us patience, how to be “in awe” of something, and even how to slow down. But can a horse teach us how to be a leader? In a horse relationship, I thought I was supposed to be the leader? In leadership you must learn to be effective at giving direction; communicating with peers and team members; you must make hard decisions, and always keep in mind the greater goal while paying attention to the smallest detail. Though horses don’t speak in a human way, they talk. They are always asking the question: “Are you going to be my leader?” You only have a moment to answer that question in the correct way. Answer it incorrectly, and well, you might have a quick disaster on your hands. Sounds familiar? You would be surprised at how effective a horse can be as a corporate trainer.

In a workshop retreat I attended many years ago, I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a mare that paired with me in a previous exercise. During the one-on-one time, she kept nuzzling my ear and head only to give me a kind but pointed shove. She then proceeded to walk over to the leader and do the same thing. The sun was blaring down on all of us, so bright that I had kept my hat on all week to shield my eyes. It never occurred to me that my hat may become one of the most powerful metaphors for leadership that have occurred in my life. After the mare went back and forth between the two of us a couple of times, clearly trying to convey a message that I was not picking up on, she walked back over to me, stomped her foot and proceeded to pull my hat off my head, step on it, then walk away.

The leader of the exercise looked at me and asked, “Do you wear a lot of hats during the day? How is that working for you?”

We could take this one small example of thousands and draw parallels in our life. Clearly she was passing along a message and asking the leader to help translate, and when I didn’t get the message, she made it clearer. I have a clear pattern in my life of taking on too many things, wearing the hats of many different roles as I try to artfully balance the tightrope of family, work, projects, volunteer commitments, etc. As a leader we must wear many hats, yet the ability to shift from role to role without losing myself in the process, as well as learning to say NO to things or distractions that don’t serve me is the greatest lesson I have ever learned from a horse, and it happened in a matter of minutes.

Not all lessons on leadership are so abrupt or obvious. Some of what we learn from horses comes from good, old-fashioned observation. In a wild herd there are very distinct roles. Just as in any team, each role is necessary, as it takes a team of different 16 Conscious Community - July 2015

strengths and weaknesses working together to be successful.

Looking at a herd from above, you will see that a herd is spread out with horses seemingly in random places; however, their placement is quite purposeful. Around the outer rims of a herd, you will find horses that are typically referred to as sentinels.

These are the horses that not only keep a watchful eye out for danger; they are also there to keep the band of the herd together.

In a flight-or-fight situation, these are the horses that hold the side of the herd together as they evade danger so no one is lost or separated.

In a business, these are the employees that notice if a project is diverging from its original purpose. They also tend to be the glue that bonds a staff together, organizing the circling of wagons, so to speak, when there is danger.

Within a herd, there are also two very well-known roles that most people are familiar with; the lead mare or alpha, and the stallion. What is interesting here is that one would expect to find the alpha mare and stallion out front leading the way, side by side moving the herd from danger. It is something rather different. Looking at that herd from above, you find a horse near the middle, which would be the mare. The lead alpha mare holds the center of the herd. She grounds them, and keeps the peace among herd members. She mentors other up-and-coming alpha mares which surround her. Those are the ones who dole out much of the discipline in a herd. The stallion is not always in the thick of the herd with her, yet is always close, ready to defend his herd if necessary. He as well does not always lead from the front. Just from observing these leaders, we learn two important lessons. The first is that it is not always necessary to lead from the front. A good leader does not always have to lead the charge and thrust headstrong into the lead. Sometimes they hold the center, creating a safe space, and allowing their team to do their job. Second, we learn that it is possible to lead from behind. The position at the rear of the herd gives a great vantage point to see the bigger picture, and where all of the other players are in relation to each other. This is a more nurturing perspective of leadership, and an effective one. In a fight-or-flee situation, it is the lead mare who gives direction to the herd. The stallion defends and protects his herd.

As in any situation where there are groups of living creatures, there are bound to be disagreements and conflict. Horses deal with conflict in a way that humans in a business situation could learn a lot from. First of all, horses in a herd know their role in

the greater herd. If there is any question related to their job or place in the herd order, the lead mare or one of her protégés will be happy to clear it up for them. The conflict is not presented in a way typical to humans; there are no grumblings of discontent that spread among the herd. There is no whining or drama that eventually leads to an explosion, followed by bitter feelings or a bruised ego. Instead, horses first use their body language and personal energy to move another horse. The simple act of moving another affirms their place in the herd. You are above anyone you can move out of your way. If there is a young one who is being a pest and pushing limits, then there is usually the second level of herd discipline involving shaking of the head and teeth. The third level of conflict involves turning the hind end toward another, and eventually feet, in the form of kicking.

However, the conflict lasts only moments, and the result is remembered, yet there are no “feelings” carried over into the next moment. It is swift and effective, and then everything is back to normal. How nice would it be if a leader could have a conflict last only a moment, and then have everything normal the next?

Horses are great leaders. They lead from all sides depending on what the needs of the herd are. They know their roles within the herd, allowing everyone to do their job with little interference, trusting them in turn. Horses are simple in that they don’t hold a grudge or allow conflict to follow them into their future, yet return to peace when the dust clears. They have the ability to communicate in times of danger, giving clear direction keeping the herd safe from all sides. They also have the ability to make the tough decisions, such as when young stallions are old enough to leave the herd, and the stallion must drive them away to go

join a “bachelor band” until they are ready to start their own herd. They find balance in the rhythms of nature in a way that we still have yet to learn. A great leader is not always the one out in front, but the one who is grounding; creating a safe place where others can do their best work. Imagine how much more effective your office could be if they operated like a herd of horses?

Which role would you play? Sometimes the greatest lesson to learn is that we don’t have to wear all the hats at once, rather to share the burdens of leadership with the others on the team.

My Encounter with Darth Vader: Being God’s Fool Although I had a sometimes difficult relationship with my father, there are some things about which I am grateful. One of those things is that my Dad lived his life, especially in his later years, without worrying about what other people thought about him. He loved to cook, and also shop for food. Standing at the checkout line at his favorite market, he’d glance at the shopping cart behind him and ask the shopper, “What are you planning to make out of this food?” After hearing the planned menu, he’d say, “That’s good, but I have a better idea. Here’s how to really make that dish.” Then he’d proceed, in great detail, to instruct the helpless shopper on the finer points of cooking. It wouldn’t matter if the shopper was listening or not, or even wondering who this crazy man was.

Although there was an element of self-centeredness in his actions, there was also a comfort with himself. It was certainly not about getting people to like him, because more often than not, they’d feel uncomfortable or embarrassed by him. Whether he was aware of their feelings or not, it never stopped him. He was ready and willing, at any moment, to completely make a fool of himself.

I believe I inherited this quality from my father. I too, am not afraid to make a fool of myself. And why do I deliberately do this? Quite simply, it feels good to me. It lets me be unpredictable, unconventional, spontaneous, and completely in the moment. It’s really a divine experience, a shaking up of ordinary reality, a transition from my mind to my heart.

Risk is always involved in making a fool of yourself. There is never a guarantee of a good or predictable outcome when you are truly spontaneous.

The following story shows what can happen: Our son, John-Nuri, had a wonderful opportunity when he was a senior in high school.

His class of 13 students was chosen along with a class in Africa, and one in India, by an organization called Project Happiness, to make a documentary film about happiness. They interviewed Richard Gere and George Lucas, traveled to India, and met with the Dalai Lama at his home in Dharamsala. At the end of the year-long project, the film was completed, and we, the parents, were invited to a special opening night showing at George Lucas’s studio and theater in San Francisco. After arriving, we were ushered into a large reception room. Food and beverages were being served. We parents were excited and nervous, awed to be standing in the Star Wars creator’s private theater lobby. As we waited to be ushered into the theater, we stood around wondering what to do.

Glancing to one side of the room, I noticed what looked like a statue of Darth Vader, the famous Star Wars villain, standing in an alcove and roped off with a loosely hanging velvet rope.

His hands were held in front of him in such a way that it looked like he was either holding an imaginary object, or perhaps even choking an imaginary person.

In a moment of brilliance, or perhaps stupidity, depending upon how you look at it, I saw that my head could probably fit between his hands, and I could pretend that I was being held or choked by none other than Darth Vader. I briefly contemplated the velvet rope. Yes, it was probably there as a barrier to keep people like me away from the statue, yet seeing how flimsy it was, more of a decoration than a barrier, I decided to ignore it.

I made my move, slipping under the rope, and stuck my head up through Darth Vader’s hands. Joyce and a group of parents on that side of the room were amazed at my audacity to do such a thing. Okay, Joyce wasn’t so amazed. Someone with a cellphone took a picture which, unfortunately, didn’t turn out very clear. In perhaps less than one minute, I slipped back out of the alcove.

That’s when I noticed the commotion. No less than three uniformed security guards were hastily making their way through the crowd toward me. One went immediately to the statue to assess for possible damage.

The other two flanked me, polite, yet all business. One of them spoke, “Sir, you probably did not know that this is the original Darth Vader costume that was worn in the movie series. Its value is priceless. You came within seconds of being handcuffed and held in custody for the police. You’re lucky nothing’s broken.”

Then they radioed a report to their supervisor, gave me one more sobering look, and quickly left.

Obviously, that was a poor choice of spontaneous action. Acting out the fool is always a risk. It could’ve ended much worse, with me in jail. But I believe the fool is much needed in our world.

One of my heroes, Saint Francis, rarely missed an opportunity to

play the fool. He was determined never to be boxed in by others expectations of him. He called himself a “fool for God.” He listened to the divine inner voice, and acted in often bizarre ways, even if it invited mockery from spectators, which it often did.

I’d rather stay newly in love with life, and continue to act like a fool.

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF NUMBERS July... Rest, Relax, Vacation

by Elizabeth Summers Even though the month of July starts out with picnics, fireworks and parades, this seventh month of the calendar year is just the opposite energetically. Chill out, kick back, go on vacation in July should become the norm. Statically, more people go on vacation in July than any other month of the calendar year. Somehow the soul knows it needs to rest.

Physically, one can feel moopy-doopy under this seventh calendar month influence. “And God rested on the seventh day” certainly explains the sabbatical energy of July.

As a transit in a personal chart during any given month, a Seven says slow down your life. If one does no slow down, their health can be used by the soul to just shut them down for many days with flu, colds, bodily injuries, disappointing relationships, financial woes that just need to be dealt with.

As a personality, I call this birthday Number Seven the Greta Garbo energy… “I vant to be alone”! Have you ever been to a party where all are displaying physical signs of hilarity and yet there is this one individual who seems to be “somewhere else”?

Appearing unemotional, aloof, quiet and reserved, one gets the distinct impression he is viewing all emotionalism as rather immature.

If you have had this experience, you just might be in the presence of a person born on the seventh, sixteenth or twenty-fifth of any given month. Don’t be misled, however. Beneath this analyzing, secretive energy breathes a sensitive and caring individual.

Observe this point, however. Frequently, the emotions of the Number Sever are so buried in its spiritual and intuitive chemistry that they may never see the “light of day.”

Finding spiritual connections in aloneness, this mystical and deep personality can drift off into philosophical dissertations that leave its listeners scratching their heads in wonderment.

The Number Seven is not one of the best financial energies so choices need to be made to keep monies in balance. The Number Seven temperament has the potential to be good in business but frequently does not follow through on its plans. On the other hand, there is a tendency to complete all projects in general.

The Number Seven is the ego Number causing an analytical and skeptical approach to life to be predominant. This then leads to a sense of perfectionism which in turn can cause difficulties in relationships. To be involved in a marriage with a Number Seven takes a special person who understands Number Seven’s need to 20 Conscious Community - July 2015

be alone. This is not the best basis for a fifty-fifty arrangement!

The key is to unlock the bottled-up emotions that could create the rough times and once that is done and understood, Number Seven’s personality tends to be a loyal and faithful marriage partner.

Counteracting their fears and loneliness issues, Number Seven partners settle nicely into family life and greatly appreciate the affectionate gestures of loved ones. Number Seven energies tend to express love and feelings from a spiritual base and thus seem to have difficulty returning all the “hugs and kisses” in an effusive, emotional way.

When adding the month, day, and year of birth together resulting in a Seven Number, know there will be a quest to discover truth within as the hallmark of this incarnation. However, the ego and mind are extremely powerful in this individual thus causing thinking and analyzing to override the awesome intuitive and clairvoyant energy ability it possesses.

The natural urge is to intellectually know and then to obtain specifics from a technical point of view all of life’s experiences.

The middle years of life from thirty to fifty-five, gently and intuitively nudges the human to develop a spiritual approach. It is this pushing by the soul that makes the personality want to be alone more. In the aloneness, the Higher Self can get through the ego and mind. Nature offers a very good support system by prompting the Number Seven to want to be in nature, around water, in the mountains or dessert providing the solitude to just think.

At heart, Number Sevens love change and travel. They have a very restless nature. Their interest in far off lands often makes them extremely good writers, researchers, painters or poets.

Interests also lie in computers, science or the occult. Whatever their interests, though, their own peculiar philosophy eventually creeps into their work.

Number Sevens care little about the material things of life. If they become wealthy from their ideas or methods of business they are just as likely to make donations from their wealth to charities or institutions.

Although the Number Seven may say very little, he observes a great deal. His sense of dignity and the need for the finer things of life lead Number Seven to experience the joy of living. In an emergency situation, the Number Severn’s first response is to pray.

This deeply introspective energy, if off course, can be interpreted as “depression”. To cover the hyper-intuitive rumblings going on within, Number Sevens may also turn to abuse of drugs and alcohol to quiet their inner selves down!

This quiet, introspective Number Seven personality brings to us all the gentle, spiritual vibrations that are so needed to slow us down in the fast –paced world we live in.

On a Sunday or Monday, the luck of Number Seven can intensify if various shades of green with white and yellow are worn.

Moonstone, “cat-eye” or pearls would round off the Number Seven’s lucky energy.

Number Sevens need to be a solitary figure, connecting the earth energy to all of us through its intuitive and clairvoyant abilities.

Next-Gen Music for Mindfulness™, TIME magazine, and my New Release, MINDFUL PIANO What a difference a name makes. When TIME magazine put mindfulness on their cover last January, it confirmed what many of us have seen seeing, and saying, for years. Millions of people are discovering the benefits of shifting their awareness into the modality usually associated with many forms of meditation.

Simply by changing the name by which they identify the activity, millions have transcended the blocks that their prior conditioning or religious beliefs precluded them from participating in.

Could this be one of the breakthroughs in consciousness that were predicted post-2012?

According to many leading scientists, shifting into a state of mindful awareness slows down your brainwaves from the beta range (13-39 cycles per second (cps)) to the alpha range (8-12 cps). While it’s true that not all alpha states are created equal, spending time in alpha is definitely different from hanging out in everyday beta.

This is not a recent discovery. As reported in the science newsletter “Brain/Mind Bulletin” on April 16, 1984, researchers in various countries were already identifying the benefits, including stress reduction and feelings of well-being and inner peace.

Marilyn Ferguson, the newsletter’s editor and publisher, and bestselling author of The Aquarian Conspiracy has been largely forgotten since her untimely passing some years ago. I was honored to be a presenter on healing music, and musician-inresidence at several of her international conferences. I’m sure many of you would enjoy checking out her book.

What is Mindfulness?

In many ways, Ram Dass put it best, and most elegantly, over 40 years ago: his book Be Here Now. Recognized authorities like Joseph Goldstein, Jon Kabat-Zinn, and Jack Kornfield offer similar descriptions: “When you are washing dishes, just be washing dishes. Don’t be thinking about the laundry, or your job. Be in the moment.”

It’s so simple, which doesn’t mean it’s easy.

For me, it’s always been the state I must access in order to compose the music that I do. When I discovered how to make that quantum shift at the piano, it opened up a new world of tonal immediacy for me.

At first, this required a bit of getting used to, and unlearning all the rules of jazz improvisation, scales, chord progressions, and poly-chordal harmony I had studied intensively for three years, as a trumpet and guitar player. As I learned to tune into “the space between the notes”...the gap between thoughts, the music began to flow through me without my conscious effort.

For me, accessing that state of mindful awareness is essential to the music that I have composed. That’s really been a fundamental source of my creativity over the years, which I’ve written about on the liner notes of my earliest recordings. When you listen to music composed in this way, the energy field is transmitted through the recording to you, which makes it easier to get into the same state on your own.

Can music help you achieve mindful awareness? Yes, but not if it’s ‘future tense’ music...which is almost all the music you hear on a daily basis.

Manipulation by Melody and the “Scalus Interruptus” Phenomenon If you’ve never heard me lecture, check out my brief YouTube video to give you a firsthand experience of how “regular” music unconsciously “forces” you to analyze and project into the future, where the music is “going.” I call this “future tense” music; you will likely feel the stress as you take the 10-second test on my video. Alan Watts, the great Zen scholar and spiritual teacher, helped me break through my own “paralysis of analysis” conditioning during a presentation to my graduate program in humanistic psychology in 1971 at Lone Mountain College. He had a large Japanese temple bowl on stage with him, which he hit in a ceremonial fashion. Then he hit it again.

The Mindful Piano and the Universal Tone

Perhaps he sensed the impatience of some of us in the audience, who wanted more variety, or something to change. In his resonant voice, he suggested, “Listen to the furthest sound. Notice the subtle fluctuations of the harmonic overtones as they change over time.”

As I noted in my June article, Carlos Santana describes the Universal Tone in his autobiography: “The Universal Tone is about universal consciousness...It’s a way of using sound to connect with the Divine in all of us.”

That was my “aha” moment. Before EST hit the scene, I got it. As you listen to my music, you may find that a helpful suggestion as well. Be in the moment. Listen to the subtleties of the blending of the overtones of my piano as they merge and create new harmonies that I did not play with my fingers.

Silence and the Space Between the Notes I’ve been composing mindful meditation music for over 45 years.

When I’m in the recording studio, I let go of the need to control the trajectory of the music. I open myself up and am able to listen mindfully…into the space between the notes, and into the gap between thoughts.

As I attune to this place of deep peace, the music flows through me, of its own accord. I never know what’s coming next, and neither will you. (That’s part of the secret that makes these compositions so effective.)

Whether you’re a musically trained individual or just a casual listener, you’ve all been culturally conditioned to respond to familiar and recognizable patterns of melody and chords, whether you’re aware of it or not.

Unconsciously, you analyze where the music is going in the future. That anticipation response contributes to the pleasure you get from pop or classical music. But it’s precisely this paralysis of analysis that keeps you in a state of stress, always waiting for the next beat or note to come.

Young People Doing Good Last month’s column was all about “Doing It Anyway.” I ended by stating: “I am going to do just that. I am going to believe that tomorrow will be better.”

A few days ago I got an interesting email from the folks at an organization called DoSomething.org. Wow! Talk about people dedicating themselves to Doing It Anyway. Not only are they doing that, they are all from the younger generation. It warms my heart and soul to see the cause for good being carried forward by people who are not only young at heart, but also young in body.

The section, “Who We Are and What we do” contains this explanation: “DoSomething.org makes the world suck less. One of the largest global orgs for young people and social change, our 3.8 million members tackle campaigns that impact every cause, from poverty to violence to the environment to literally everything else. Any cause, anytime, anywhere.”

The email that caught my attention was one of their weekly shoutouts, or as they call it Member Superlatives, that they award to five members who rocked a campaign and sent a sweet picture to prove it. Here are thumbnails on the awardees who are featured on the organization’s blog on 5/22/15 (blog.dosomething.org): Kayla, 17, rocked their Mirror Messages campaign by posting encouraging notes on bathroom mirrors, a place that can easily trigger low self-esteem. Mirror Messages is just one of their many campaigns. Young people are signing up and pledging to post notes on mirrors just like Kayla. Some of Kayla’s messages include “Let Your Light Shine!”, “Believe in Yourself!”, and “Hey! You’re Cute!”

Alondra, 17, was lauded for participating in the Comeback Clothes campaign, which inspires the recycling of old clothes so they can be given a new life. Alondra donated 1,196 items of clothing.

Courtney, 18, signed up for the Super Shelter Pets campaign, and dressed up her own cute superpup named Sadie, who helped teach other people how awesome shelter pets are.

Michelle, 17, recruited her little brother to help make the world a little bit cleaner through the Sea Turtle Street Sweep campaign.

Michelle is a member of her school’s recycling club, and saving the planet and its inhabitants is really important to her.

Dogs, as well as young people, seem to also be pitching in a lot.

With the help of her dog, Leo, April, 18, brought some joy to students stressed out because of their final exams. It was all part of the Doggy De-Stresser campaign.

That last one, Dancing with the Seniors has members hosting a dance class at a local senior center. Those seniors, however, can’t join DoSomething.org. Members are restricted to young people between the ages of 13 and 25. They state: “Older than that = old people.”

Hey! Wait a second! Here are some words of wisdom from my young hippie days when we set the age boundary between young and old at 30: “You’re only as old as you feel.” We started to figure that out when we hit 30, and have continued to figure that out ever since. And guess what? Science is proving that we’re right. Last December the Daily Mail (dailymail.co.uk) published

an article about a University College London study that showed that those who feel younger than they really are have a better life expectancy.

The numbers were not only significant, they were at times overwhelming: • 75% of volunteers felt physically better after volunteering • 64% of volunteers with a chronic disease felt volunteering helped to manage their illness • 78% of volunteers felt their stress levels go down • 94% of volunteers said volunteering improved their mood • 80% of volunteers felt they had more control over their health

So…Let’s applaud all the DoSomething.org members and all the other folks who are doing good. Let’s also applaud everyone who endeavors to remain young at heart. Taken together this is surely a dynamic combination.

My Advice: If you are between the ages of 13 and 25, check out DoSomething.org and consider joining. If you know someone who fits that age range, put a bug in their ear about exploring the website. And if you’re over 25 like me, well, check out the DoSomething.org anyway. You don’t have to join a campaign to be inspired by it. Many of these ideas can be tailored for any group of do-gooder volunteers. I, myself, plan to start carrying around sticky notes so I can start putting inspiring messages on bathroom mirrors.

All month long we will see the beneficent augur of the brilliant Venus-Jupiter pairing in the evening twilight, in heart-sign Leo, with a dash of Virgo. The Sun and Mercury both enter the sunshine sign of Leo on the 23rd. Two planets turn retrograde—Venus on the 25th and Uranus on the 26th—suggesting a paradigm-shifting period of values clarification to improve our experience in love and with money. Venus extends her stay in Leo, dancing more than once with several partners—Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. Expect plenty of emotional drama. Mars and the Sun are both interfacing with the still potent Uranus-Pluto square on and off all month. How are you redesigning the basics of your life to indicate that you are responding to this cosmic necessity? Cleaning out any closets, having a garage sale, taking charge of any outstanding project that needs fixing—all are simple yet effective ways to demonstrate your cooperation. Make best use of what you have.

If you can’t use it, give it to someone who can. “Saving for a rainy day” often piles up a lot of clutter.

The three-day holiday continues with a wide mélange of gatherings and get-togethers—barbecues, flag-waving parades, fireworks, homegrown garden salads, beach picnics and conscious-changing workshops. Choose your combination of flavors, enjoying the company wherever you go. The patterns are rearranging themselves around us. We will see some familiar holiday spirits, but also new factors and faces showing up today.

Clearly a day to take it easy, this day begins with a Void of Course Moon at 7:31am to 9:23am, exhibiting a bit of grumpy, bumpy and lumpy, before it moves into fluid Pisces. Don’t let bad moods or anxieties ruin your Sunday. Family issues or concerns about safety and security may come up. Step up, take responsibility and take care of such things that need to be attended to and can’t be put off, especially if you are the person in charge. Someone may have to draw the line. It could be you.

Beware overextending holiday weekend indulgences, as some will be prone to do, just because...Early to bed, early to rise is a good maxim to follow for needed good sleep on a potentially dream-filled night.

Some discomfort may continue, as we can’t help but intimate that significant changes are imminent. We can take care of our personal sphere, at least, which adds a positive drop in the bigger picture bucket. Many of us are picking up subcurrents stirring in the collective consciousness, giving rise to irrational fears or nightmarish imaginings, not just a result of holiday hangover.

Take time to turn your mind to positive thoughts and be proactive in your appreciation for the good things in your life. It’s a gift to remind others of these things, also, sharing the good vibes that are always available if we look in the right places.

Another short Void of Course Moon gives us space to tune in to a finer vibration. Take advantage of this opportunity from 9:36am to 11:37am. Set your sails in a positive direction for the rest of the day. Sweep away any spacy cobwebs or worries. Your clear attention is called for when the Moon enters fiery Aries.

It’s one of “those days” that the Moon interfaces with UranusPluto yet again, with a grand finale of some kind of fireworks late in the evening. Tensions early in the day call for a new approach, igniting inspirational solutions by day’s end. Mercury enters subjective Cancer at 1:52pm, suggesting a reflective tone to our thoughts for the rest of the month. This can lead to misunderstandings when we don’t say what we really mean, or take things that are said too personally. This potential problem may evoke some miscommunication today, and increasingly in the next week or so. It is important to pay attention to how our words affect other people. Observe what words you are using to talk to yourself as well, to see if you are thinking open and positive thoughts or closed and defensive ones. Action follows thought, they say. Keep your tone on the high side that invites wellbeing. Think before you speak and certainly before you act.

Where are you coming from? What are your motivations? Are you acting in the highest good for yourself and others? A wakeful night is likely for many of us.

If you are a buyer, beware of going home with more stuff you don’t need, or overspending on luxury items. There are other ways to enjoy the day, without indulging bad habits. Nevertheless, there are always many good reasons to enhance our wardrobes or beautify our homes. Keep the receipt, just in case you reconsider and want to return any item. The Moon goes Void at 4:52pm, with a serious tone. Stop for the day, and check in with yourself.

The Moon enters carefree Gemini at 7:16pm. Some spontaneous entertainment may be just the thing to get us out of any doldrums.

The Moon enters Cancer at 1:14am. The NEW HORIZONS spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at Pluto today, after a 10-year flight of three billion miles. If you are a Pluto-lover (you know who you are), mark your calendar for today’s closest fly-by of this remote planet with its bevy of five moons, including relatively large Charon. Maybe we’ll find even more tiny icy moonlets when we get up close and personal. Tomorrow’s New Moon is very attuned to Pluto’s zodiac placement, so timely.

The planet’s discoverer, Clyde Tombaugh, once wrote that, “The discovery of Pluto [in 1930] was due to a remarkable chain of accidental events spanning several decades, decreed by fate...

Its nature is more strange than ever. Its status as an object is engulfed in mystery. Everything about Pluto was unexpected.”

Reclassified in 2006 from a planet to a dwarf planet, and then more specifically as a “plutoid,” perhaps this tiny dark world may surprise us yet again.

NEW MOON, 8:24pm CDT, at 24 CANCER The Cancer New Moon brings home and family front and center. Security and belonging are basic needs that are on our minds, personally and collectively. A day of fun and games extends into the afternoon until some situation or issue comes to our attention and needs to be addressed. The Moon goes VoC at 4:41pm, changing the tone of the day and the zodiac sign of Venus. The planet of love moves across the far edge of Leo into Virgo at 5:38pm, soon followed by the Moon at 7:47pm. The crescent Moon with Venus is one of the loveliest sights in the sky. Jupiter is a big plus. Venus hovers at its high point in the sky, preparing to turn retrograde on the 25th. Venus remains on this cusp between signs until the last day of July. The body of Leo the Lion, with the head of Virgo the Goddess evokes the image of the Sphinx. What deep questions will the mysterious Sphinx ask you?

The Moon remains in earthy Virgo, inviting us into a sensual awareness of the organic wisdom of Nature and of our bodies, our personal piece of earth. This may be a special day to appreciate the beauty of Nature, as it opens a window to the divine. Pay attention and give honor where honor is due. “By the fruits of their labors you shall know them,” it says in the Bible, referring to those who quietly get the job done rather than make a big splash to get attention.

Mercury enters the sunshine sign at 7:15am, moving into the heart of the Sun, thus communicating the heart’s emotional intelligence. When things are at odds, when life throws a curve ball that gets us off track, it’s no use yelling angrily at the gods or anyone in the vicinity. If you trust cosmic intelligence and consider any curve ball is tossed into the mix for good reason, all you need to do is listen to the message that comes through your heart. Solutions that improve the overall situation are the likely result. Give it a little time. The Moon is Void at 1:12pm, with opportunities on hand. All’s well that ends well, like this day. The Moon enters Scorpio to help turn things around for the better at 9:07pm, but don’t take things for granted. Maintain resonance with your heart, so doubts are kept at bay.

Venus turns officially retrograde at 4:29am. Our sister planet will slowly drop in the evening sky and eventually disappear in the light of the Sun. For the next 40 days and 40 nights of this cycle, we will revisit some emotional territory of the last few months.

The goddess calls us within to reevaluate what we have learned and how to open our hearts more deeply and truly. The Moon is Void of Course at 4:14am, confronting us with a reality-check involving issues that we are to resolve over the summer. The Moon enters optimistic Sagittarius at 7:24am, ready to inspire visions and imagine possibilities. Even as Venus has turned backwards, so does Change Agent Uranus, turning retrograde at 5:38am. We’ve gotten as far as we can for now, as we forge ahead onto new trails. We need to consolidate our progress and apply all new ideas to the litmus test of efficacy.

We can’t do everything at once. Venus wants to be in on any decisions, which must meet her criteria for quality control: beauty, satisfaction and emotional value, all contributing to an increase in our heart happiness. Don’t waste it by overindulging in lesser substitutes for life’s true gold.

If you’re feeling the blues, find a window and look for the rainbows in the midst of the rain. Venus returns to Leo, where she will dwell for over two more months. She will soon journey beneath the sky’s horizon. Stories from many cultures tell of the descent of the goddess to the underworld, there to be renewed before she rises again to the light of day. With full and grateful heart, let’s enjoy what the mirror of life feeds back as a reflection our inner state of Being. It’s not always our pretty side that we see. The mirror may reflect our shadow. Once we see it, it can be turned to brighter expression. A creative response to whatever life shows us allows us to be the best examples we can of who we truly are.
