Going off the beaten path for some live music alternatives this weekend BEFORE WE BEGIN, I should make one thing clear. This piece is geared toward those of you who are visiting our fair city for the Saint Patrick’s Day holiday. Now, that’s not to say that folks who live here year round won’t find some valuable information contained herein, but the truth remains – this is a primer for those unfamiliar with our local nightlife. The idea itself was deceptively simple. You see, we’ve been expecting you. In fact, some folks have been waiting on you for just about a year. This is the single biggest week of the year for many of the businesses in Savannah that deal with the tourism industry. It’s when both kinds of green can be found blanketing the town like so much confetti. And, as a result, many people have come to rely on this five or six day period as though it were a life preserver. For some of them, it certainly serves as one. Many taverns and eateries would most definitely have a rougher time making a long-term go of things if it weren’t for the almost overwhelming influx of visitors this holiday draws to the

Where Is WIllis city each year. So, you’re here now. And we’re obliged to show you a good time. Now you’ve probably heard tell about the wild times to be had on River Street, and many of those tales need no embellishment. It’s understandable you’ll want to check out the scene down there and get a gander for yourself. In fact, I encourage you to do so. It is a Savannah tradition and something to behold. it’s not for everyone, but even those who don’t normally go in for that sort of thing can get a tremendous kick out of it in small doses. It’s always intrigued me how the mood and overall tone of the crowd by the river

DRIVE THE xA, xB, AND tC. CUSTOMIZED FOR YOUR DRIVING PLEASURE.

can shift almost imperceptibly while you’re actually taking part in it. At one moment it seems like a full-on party – wild, unpredictable, and raucously festive. Then, you’ll turn away for a moment, speak to a friend or buy something to eat or drink, and by the time you focus your attention on your surroundings again, you find the whole place has become rather sheepish and mild. I suppose that has a great deal to do with herd mentality. Regardless, it’s incumbent upon the folks who plan the free, outdoor entertainment by the river (and in the City Market area) to select acts which they feel will appeal to the widest swath of the public. That’s why you have so many middle-of-the-road acts featured in that milieu. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s the nature of the beast. And, to their credit, there’s usually a few oddballs thrown into the mix each year to keep the more adventurous among us intrigued, while the less adventurous head for the Port-O-Lets. But with those understandable restrictions in mind, it would stand to reason

that if you want to really get a feel for what nightlife and entertainment in Savannah is truly all about, you’d have to ditch River Street or City Market at some point in your travels, and head indoors. You’ll have to find a place with its own feel, it’s own vibe. The kind of place that has a personality all its own, and whose proprietors work hard to maintain that personality day in and day out, all year round. The sort of place that looks forward to the extra income that tens of thousands of visitors bring with them, but isn’t that interested in shifting gears to acommodate strangers. A take it or leave it sort of place. As I said, the idea for this piece when hatched was deceptively simple. We’d simply shine a bit of a spotlight on some of the more idiosyncratic nightspots that feature live entertainment on some sort of regular basis here in town, and make sure our newfound readership knew how to easily locate the edgier side of Saint Patrick’s Day in Savannah, Georgia. So, we came up with the title “Hidden Gems,” as seeking this stuff out is a bit like searching for an emerald in a pile of

Answer: All public parking garages will be open for $10 per car. Many people choose to park at the Oglethorpe Mall and catch a bus. The City of Savannah provides a Park & Ride Trolley 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on March 17 for $3 round trip. Trolleys run from Oglethorpe Mall to the corner of Price and Oglethorpe. Remember not to park along the parade

Answer: All vehicles illegally parked will be towed at owner’s expense. Affected motorists must obtain a vehicle release form from Savannah Police headquarters at Habersham and Oglethorpe Streets in order to claim any towed vehicle. Proof of ownership is required to obtain a vehicle release form from the Savannah Police Department.

Question: If I bring alcoholic beverages downtown am I going to get into trouble? gene witham

www.connectsavannah.com

Question: Where can I park?

Answer: You cannot bring alcohol onto River Street or into the “gated” area. Bringing alcohol into that area will definitely get you in trouble. Other areas are okay with the right type & size cups. Probably the best rule would be to wait and purchase your drinks in the festival area so it will be in an approved container. Always have a designated driver. Bear in mind that dispensing alcohol from a vehicle is a violation of a city ordinance.

Question: What about “to go” cups? Answer: All beverages must be in a paper, styrofoam or plastic cup that holds no more than 16 ounces. You’ll be able to

purchase your drinks from vendors in approved cups inside the festival area. No glass bottles or metal containers will be allowed. Leave them at home.

Question: Will there be adequate security? Answer: Yes. You may, at some point, be asked to show the contents of bags, coolers or backpacks by police officers. They are only doing this for your security.

Question: Is the Savannah/Chatham Metropolitican Police Department the only police agency working in the festival area or providing security? Answer: The Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Army Military Police, the Georgia State Patrol, Savannah/Chatham County School Board Police, and the Coast Guard will be assisting with security along the parade route and providing extra patrols throughout the city. In particular, GSP will be intensely patrolling the major routes in and out of Savannah. All officers will be strictly enforcing a “zero tolerance” concern for safety and especially DUI’s.

Question: What is the festival area? Answer: It is an area in downtown Savannah north of Jones Street to the river, west of East Broad, and east of Boundary Street and the Talmadge Bridge.

Question: When do the gates open to River Street? Answer: 8 a.m. Thursday & 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission to the River Street “Controlled Zone is free but you must purchase a $5 bracelet if you wish to drink alcohol outside of the businesses along River Street. Admission is charged from opening to midnight.

Question: What’s the chance of the crowd getting too big on River Street or the possibility of River Street closing?

Question: Do I have to buy a bracelet to go down to River Street? Answer: No. The only reason you would have to buy a bracelet would be to drink alcohol outside of businesses in the “Control Zone of River Street. If you remain inside a business you do not have to purchase a bracelet to drink alcohol. But remember, you must remain inside the business with your drink if you don’t have a bracelet.

Question: So, bracelets are only for drinking outside, on River Street? Answer: Correct.

Question: How do I buy a bracelet? Answer: Bracelets will be on-sale at a number of locations on River Street. They are $5 a piece and must be worn at all times if you are drinking alcoholic beverages. To purchase one you must present a valid ID proving you are 21 or older. The vendor will place the bracelet on your wrist. A bracelet is only good for one day.

Question: Will Bay Street be closed? Answer: Yes. For pedestrian safety Bay Street will be closed Wednesday through

Answer: Buses and cabs will be allowed to drop off and pick up people at Indian Street on the west end of Bay Street and between East Broad and Price Street on the east end of Bay St.

Question: Can I dock my boat on River Street during the festival? Answer: No. The public boat docks will be reserved for law enforcement traffic or emergencies.

Question: What do I do if I get a citation? Answer: Should you receive a citation for violating a city ordinance, it can be handled just like any other ticket, like speeding or running a red light. Only Chatham County residents will be released with a city ordinance summons. If you receive a summons, you can avoid a court appearance by paying the fine in advance at the Recorders Court window in the Chatham County Courthouse. You always have the right to appear in court and plead your case. You will be given a court date when you receive the citation. Should you ignore it, you will be found in Contempt of Court. Don’t do that -- it just makes things much, much worse.

Question: What about portable toilets?

Saturday nights’ beginning at 8 p.m. It will be barricaded on the west end at MLK Blvd and on the east end at Price Street. Depending on the crowds after the parade we may be forced to close Bay Street early but that will only happen after close inspection by SCMPD and only for pedestrian safety.

Question: How late will alcohol be served on Thursday, March 17th? Answer: Actually, businesses are allowed to continue to sell alcoholic beverages until 1 a.m., Thursday morning March 18. On Friday and Saturday nights (actually Saturday and Sunday morning) the bars will close at 3 a.m. That rule remains the same inside the festival area and throughout the rest of the city.

Question: If I or a friend of mine gets sick or hurt, will there be medical assistance available? Answer: The people at Memorial Health University Medical Center are providing MEDSTAR personnel that will be on bicycle throughout the parade route and will have their mobile van parked on St. Julian Street in City Market. In addition, they will have personnel on foot and positioned on River Street for minor medical emergencies. Should a major medical emergency occur, SCMPD and Memorial Health will work together to get the proper care, or provide transportation to those affected as quickly and expeditiously as possible. â——

Thanks to the SCMPD for providing most of the above information.

Connect Savannah

Answer: SCMPD works closely with representatives of the Savannah Waterfront Association to closely monitor the crowds and numbers of people on River Street. If the weather is good, it is entirely possible Savannah may have record crowds. If the crowd gets too big the decision may have to be made to no longer allow anyone else access to River Street, or if people leave River Street not allow them to return, or maybe even a combination of both. Either way SCMPD will be looking out for the greater safety of the public in any action it may be forced to take.

Excerpts from this year’s Sebastian Dangerfield Lecture at AASU EVERY YEAR PROFESSOR FRANK CLANCY of Armstrong Atlantic State University hosts a lecture on Irish literature, named in honor of the entirely fictional character Sebastian Dangerfield from James Patrick Donleavy’s novel The Ginger Man, and fueled in large part by generous servings of Irish coffee. Below are a few blarney-filled stories from the latest installment of the annual Dangerfield Lecture, held March 9 at AASU. Believe them at your own risk: • “Oscar Wilde was attending college in his hometown of Dublin when a teacher said to him, ‘Oscar, if you want to make a name for yourself as a writer you’ve got to go to Oxford.’ “When he got there, Reverend Spooner, one of the headmasters, wished to question on his Greek, as he did with all his new students, to put them in perspective of how much they had to learn and how far they had to get there. “Spooner asked him to translate part of the Bible into English. Oscar stood there reading very easily from it, ‘Jesus said unto Peter who said unto John,’ and so on and so forth and the Reverend said, ‘OK, stop, that’s enough,’ but Oscar kept on reading. “‘You can stop now, son,’ said the Reverend, and yet Oscar continued to read innocently. The Reverend had finally had enough and said, ‘Oscar, stop this, I understand that you can read Greek, stop reading.’ “Oscar looked up to the Reverend and said, ‘Why, I only wished to see what happened to the unfortunate fellow.’”

“He started talking with the bum and the man turned out to be beautifully and articulately spoken. “The student took his leave and as he continued to walk someone came up and said to him, ‘Do you know who that was? You just had a conversation with Oscar Wilde!’ “Well, the student rushed back to his hotel and telegraphed his mother about the experience. She responded by telling him to come home immediately: ‘My son will not be caught up with the likes of that man, Oscar Wilde, hummph!’”

Professor Clancy at a previous year’s lecture • “In 1900 a student graduated from the University of Wisconsin and his parents sent him on a trip abroad Europe.

He laid down, looked around the room and said, ‘I don’t like the wallpaper... one of us has to go.’ He then died.” He was traversing a bridge when he came across a bum.

• “Before Oscar Wilde died a few friends pitched in for a cheap hotel for him to die in. He laid down, looked around the room and said, ‘I don’t like the wallpaper... one of us has to go.’ He then died.” • “When William Butler Yeats was the great European poet, there was a young kid at University College who was showing great promise. People kept asking Yeats to meet with the kid and give him words of encouragement and whatnot, so he agreed. “The whole time the kid lectured him on poetics and aesthetics and finally Yeats had enough and told the kid that he had to go. “The kid asked, ‘How old are you?’ ‘Forty,’ replied Yeats. Said the kid, ‘I’m sorry, sir, I can’t help you. You’re too old.’ The kid was James Joyce.” ◗

Thrifty Hardware store, then B&B Paint, where she always bought the same three colors: Chinese red, silver and white. Rossell, who moved to Savannah from the west coast, teaches vernacular architecture. He discovered Ms. Gibson by driving around, looking for interesting houses. He hit the jackpot when he met her. “I left her a note and she called me,” he said. They became fast friends. Rossell loved taking his classes to her garden. “This,” he would tell his students, their mouths hanging open at the arrangement of plastic shower hooks, yellow reflective lights and whirligigs made from discarded fan blades, “is a real artist.” But an artist with a heart. Bobby Lockett met her when he was selling cars at Southern Motors, Ms. Gibson leading the way, asking, Lockett said, “for that colored salesman.” No matter that Ms. Gibson couldn’t drive and her husband was blind. When the couple arrived they had a stash of $20 bills wrapped in a series of handkerchiefs, a system devised by her sightless husband. “I drove them home,” Lockett recalled at last week’s funeral, “Florence sat in the back as usual. I taught her to drive.” In time Ms. Gibson started calling Lockett, now chairman of the Housing Authority of Savannah and a salesman at Dan Vaden, her “son.” He didn’t mind. Active politically, Lockett frequently brought politicians to her house. “She always asked the same thing,” he said. “‘What you gonna do for my people?’ She was the first to bring a brown bag of something to anyone in need, too.” She posed the same question to the late Bobby Hill and Robbie Robinson and to Diana Harvey Johnson, popular former state legislator. “She was something else,” Johnson told 100 or so mourners crowded into the Michael Brown Funeral Home on Bay Street. “That and a bag of potato chips. She loved to chastise Bobby for not feeding Bunny.” When the service -- “the homegoing of another soldier” -- was over, the procession started making its way to Evergreen Cemetery in Liberty City. But not before driving by Ms. Gibson’s corner house on Rankin Street, not far from the paper company. This is the house with the funny trinkets; the unfinished projects; the budding plum tree; the Brooklyn Bridge, the name given to a red walkway she made to cross a dip in the yard and the homemade bunny hutch, made from grates of discarded air-conditioners she’d gather in the woods across the street. Everything looked normal. It was just a little too quiet. ◗

THE LAST TIME I VISITED FLORENCE GIBSON she was down to one bunny rabbit. Twenty three females and one male had died. “The male committed suicide when he couldn’t get near the girls,” she explained. It was December and the temperature had plummeted. So Ms. Gibson moved Bunny Gal into the kitchen where a borrowed electric heater, set high on a stool to escape Bunny’s curiosity, warmed the room No matter that the rest of the house, unheated, was hovering around 50. Bunny Gal came first. After reaching into her fridge, filled with Coca-Colas, and taking out some carrots for her pet, Ms. Gibson led me outside to her woodpile. It sits in the back of her eclectic yard, beyond the terrarium, decorated with two plaster fishermen, one black, one white. Behind the side of her house she regarded as the North Pole, filled as it is with plastic penguins, a child’s Santa’s Express and a stack of hubcaps painted white or silver. Past two plum trees, two fig trees, a pomegranate tree and several upsidedown metal chairs positioned to protect next summer’s cucumber plants. And not too far from the Penny Rose Memorial Garden, where her late dog Tammy is memorialized by a headstone with a telephone on top (“She was so smart she answered the telephone,” she told me a few years back). She mourned this dog so badly she put a notice in the newspaper’s obituary section. We dragged in several good-sized pieces of timber for her wood-burning stove. The place heated up immediately, so we turned off her oven. Then, when she told me to splash some kerosene and light a match -- and I flinched -- she said, “Oh, go on now. You won’t hurt yourself none.” Two months later, Ms. Gibson died. She was 94. Hudson Hill neighbor Earl Bobby Middletown saw her the Sunday before she passed. “She wanted me to build her some new shelves for her dolls,” he said. The dolls she loved to bathe and clothe in new garments. The dolls that share the living room with beads, trinkets and curios painted red that decorated the modest concrete block house she and her husband built in 1953. Middletown, former owner of the Tina-B Tavern on Richard Street -- named after his mother -- was one of several people who would drive Ms. Gibson to Universe Trading Company on Franklin Square. “Lord how she loved that place,” he said. “She’d never ride in the front seat though. Always in the back.” SCAD professor E. Daves Rossell would drive her there, too. Then to

School Board President Hugh Golson, left, with Acting Superintendent of Schools George Bowen at a recent press conference at 208 Bull Street DESCRIBING WHAT BOTH AGREE is a “major paradigm shift” in the way public education is managed in Chatham County, School Board President Hugh Golson and Acting Superintendent George Bowen presented a unified front at a press conference last week on accreditation issues. “I want to stress that we’re still an accredited district,” Golson began. “At no time has our accreditation been lifted. We’re moving to take steps to lift the probationary status to make that an even firmer bed of reality.” At issue is last year’s dressing-down of the local school board by the private accrediting body Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). A series of situations where Chatham County School Board members interfered in the day-to-day operations of individual schools was judged to be so severe that SACS placed the entire local public school system on probationary status for a year -- where it remains to this day. In theory the next step would be to lose accreditation entirely. Among other things, this would negate any graduate’s eligibility for the Georgia HOPE Scholarship. “I’ve talked to so many 11th graders moving into their senior years who are concerned about whether they’ll get a diploma that will qualify them for a HOPE Scholarship -- or more importantly, will they be able to get into the university of their choice,” Bowen said at the press conference.

“I’ve been personally meeting with them to let them know that they won’t have anything to worry about,” he said. “All this will be history come September.” Still, Bowen acknowledged that months of acrimony -- including a contentious recall campaign against Golson and several other board members -- have left a bitter taste in the mouth of local parents and educators. “SACS has made us aware of some critical issues. And getting all this behind us is a critical portion of addressing those issues,” Bowen said. “The community will feel a lot more supportive of what we’re trying to do if we can tell them we’ve overcome these accreditation issues.” As proof of their devotion to doing away with business as usual in Chatham County, Golson and Bowen presented a detailed timeline for reforming school board policy that has been sent to Dr. Mark A. Elgart, SACS executive director. “We’ve been told we need to change the way we govern, and we’re taking steps to change that,” Golson said. “A big part of getting off probation is having clear-cut policies. We have to learn a new way of governing.” Golson said that board and staff members have traveled to Atlanta to get face-to-face input from SACS about installing new governance standards. “We met with Dr. Elgart in Atlanta and got his input into the process,” he said. “It’s important to remember that we’re a

ALLIE MEIXNER. Remember that name. You just might be seeing it up in lights. Meixner currently is performing in the Jam Theatricals production of Contact as the Girl in the Yellow Dress. The production is coming to the Savannah Civic Center’s Johnny Mercer Theatre on March 21. What’s remarkable about Meixner is that she is just 18 and very determined to succeed. “I moved to the city in September,” she says. “I took my graduation money and moved to New York. I got this job in five days.” Forget starving in a garret or waiting tables to get discovered. Meixner landed the plum role as the “Girl in the Yellow Dress,” whose performance is considered the highlight of the show. Although she is young, she has been preparing for this opportunity for a long time. “I started dancing when I was three,” Meixner says. “My mom is my biggest supporter. She’s always encouraged my career. My dad will be supportive, whatever I do. But he said he wishes I would go to college first.” It’s important to Meixner that people know she graduated from high school in Pennsylvania with a 4.3 grade point average and received highest honors with distinction. She had been accepted to Fordham University,

but decided to postpone college to pursue a career as a dancer and actress. “This opportunity only comes around once,” Meixner says. “A dancer’s career is so short. I hope this gives me the opportunity to play bigger roles. If I hadn’t received any job offers, I was planning to attend college.” In 2000, Contact won every major theater award, including the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama League Award and four Tony Awards. It features three stories told entirely through dance. The theme deals with the way people connect with each other as they pursue love, and the musical is recommended for mature audiences. The 24 dancers/actors in the cast perform to a wide range of music. There’s classical music by Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Bizet, plus modern songs by Robert Palmer, Dean Martin, the Beach Boys and The Squirrel Nut Zippers. There is even a Broadway tune in Stephane Grappelli’s arrangement of Rodgers and Hart’s My Heart Stood Still. The first of the three stories, Swinging, takes place in the 18th century as an aristocrat pursues a young lady with the help of his servant. The second, Did You

Move?, takes place in the 1950s as a housewife dreams of a romantic life of dance and music. The final story is Contact, in which a depressed and suicidal advertising executive becomes renewed after seeing a beautiful girl in a yellow dress. “He has everything in the world,” Meixner says. “He has a posh apartment and a Clio Award, but he’s unhappy because there is no one to share them with. Then one night in a club, he sees the girl in the yellow dress. All the guys want to dance with her. The advertising executive dances with her, but she won’t go home with him.” Later, another woman comes to the man’s door. Although she is a stranger, he sees her as the Girl in the Yellow Dress. The musical was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman and written by John Weidman for the Lincoln Center Theater. “Contact is a very unique show, a one-of-a-kind, a must-see,” Meixner says. “The first story shows the need for contact,” she says. “The second shows the lack of contact, and the third shows the desire for contact. “The show was created around the girl in the yellow dress,” Meixner says. “Susan Stroman saw a girl in a yellow dress in a club who everyone wanted to dance with, and got the idea for the story.”

Many people in her hometown were shocked when Meixner moved to New York. “So many people doubted me,” she says. “In my community, people are so gung-ho about going to college,” Meixner says. “But some had never seen me dance.” When Contact was staged in Pennsylvania, some of those doubters got their chance to see Meixner in action. “They were completely blown away,” she says with obvious delight. Giant Croc Rescue A giant crocodile, said to have eaten more than 80 people in eastern Uganda, was captured alive, then quickly moved to a crocodile farm to save it from an angry mob that wanted to kill it. Five Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers waited with local fishermen for the crocodile to appear in a three-night vigil on the shores of Lake Victoria. They then captured the one-ton reptile with nets, ropes and cables near the town of Lugaga. UWA spokesman Moses Mapesa believes the 16-foot croc is about 60 years old. Ugandan authorities say recent deadly crocodile attacks are due to an increased human population and activities that have encroached on the reptiles’ territory. ◗

Marine biologists and volunteers in the Florida Keys worked to save a group of rough-toothed dolphins, which beached themselves near where the U.S. Navy had just used sonar during military exercises. At least 23 of the nearly 70 marine mammals have died since they became stranded around Marathon Key. Ingrid Some scientists theorized that loud bursts of sonar could have caused the deepwater dolphins to surface too quickly and become disoriented due to sudden decompression. The Naval Submarine Forces unit, which was conducting the exercises with Navy SEALs near Key West just before the beachings, said it was cooperating with marine mammal experts to determine if their use of two kinds of sonar could have been a factor.

News of the Weird

NEWS|

Theatre of the Absurd Producers announced in February that they were still planning to bring the 3-year-old London stage show “Jerry Springer, The Opera” to America in early 2006, despite increasingly vituperative protests of religious groups. The show features “Jerry” mediating confessions in hell between Satan, God, Jesus, Mary, and various biblical characters, complete with a raucous audience periodically chanting “Jer-ree! Jer-ree!” Reportedly, 300 to several thousand curse words are in the script (depending on who counts), and the show’s Jesus is a pudgy, diaper-wearing gay man who is apparently coprophilic (among the many alleged points of blasphemy). When the BBC televised a showing, it reported 50,000 complaints, with some physical threats directed to station staff and families.

Feng Shui in Decline In January, police in Hong Kong arrested two men on suspicion of stealing a boatload of spiritually regarded pine trees, which they allegedly intended to sell to feng shui practitioners; the scheme failed when their boat, apparently lacking feng shui’s “harmony” and “positive energy,” broke down. Also in January, the Hong Kong company Life Enhance introduced briefs and boxer shorts that it says will bring harmony by virtue of the dragon on the front (which gives balance in this, the “year of the rooster”). Said a Life Enhance spokeswoman, “If you have a dragon on your underpants, you will be protected.”

Least Competent Law Enforcement Circleville, Ohio, police officer Troy Brungs, 35, was still on the job in January (though a hearing on a DUI charge was pending) despite (in the last five years) three suspensions, seven written reprimands, eight written orders for counseling, and three patrol-car crashes. And in February, at Ohio’s Mansfield Correctional Institution, two death-row inmates nearly succeeded in an elaborate escape attempt that the security supervisor, Maj. John Morrison, had been warned about a month earlier but apparently had ignored (as one of the inmates had been promoted to a trusted position two days before the escape).

Cutting-Edge Law Enforcement A downtown problem in Manila (Philippines) is that pedestrians create a

by Chuck Shepherd

traffic hazard when many of them rush into the street almost indiscriminately to seek rides from passing cars. Thus, in January, police began to attach large wet blankets to some official vehicles roaming the streets, with the blankets flapping against the pedestrians, soiling their clothes and herding them back to the sidewalks. (Pedestrians who remain after being flayed are arrested.)

Finer Points of the Law In a December Rocky Mountain News report, Colorado’s one-size-fits-all juvenile-sexoffender program was widely criticized as one of the nation’s least sensible, with restrictions for a one-time incident of adolescent curiosity nearly as harsh as for teenage predators. In the former category was “Victor,” who is barred from public venues where younger children go, must file an action plan with his treatment team to visit other venues, must phone his parents hourly, must avert his eyes if he inadvertently sees young children, and has formal requirements for which his parents must pay (group therapy weekly, individual therapy twice a week, periodic polygraph tests). Victor’s exasperated therapist said he considers the boy “normal.”

Courtroom Follies Jimmy Dean Watkins pleaded guilty in Fort Worth, Texas, in January for shooting his estranged wife to death and wounding her boyfriend, and was sentenced to four months in prison for the killing and 15 years for the wounding. (The jury found that he had acted against the wife with partially excusable “sudden passion” after discovering her with the boyfriend, but that shooting the boyfriend was more deliberate.) “I’m Absolutely Positive”: In late 2004, two men who had been convicted of rape based on confident identifications by the victims (Wilton Dedge of Florida and Dennis Brown of Louisiana) were exonerated after having served 22 and 19 years, respectively, before DNA evidence showed that the crimes were almost certainly committed by others. In the trials, Dedge’s accuser had stuck to her recollection even after six alibi witnesses had come forward, and Brown’s accuser said she observed her rapist’s face up close for 20 minutes and was certain Brown was the man. Train conductor Patrick Phillips, 52, won $8.5 million in an out-of-court settlement in February with Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, which was involved in a collision with a freight train in 2002. Phillips suffered a mild concussion in the crash, which he said then triggered his sudden desire to become a

serious alcoholic (leading to his eventual dementia), whereas he said his drinking had previously been under control.

People With Issues University of Michigan football player Larry Harrison Jr., 20, was charged with four felony counts of indecent exposure in January, and is a suspect in 12 other incidents, after being identified by several victims and police officers as the man shocking Ann Arbor, Mich., during the last half of 2004 in a public masturbation spree. And Charles J. Henry, 20, was indicted for indecent exposure in Fairbanks, Alaska, in February after four teenagers said he was similarly enjoying himself in his car while parked at Lathrop High School. (Henry defended himself to officers, claiming that he was under stress and that it was actually the girls’ responsibility to avert their eyes.)

Least Competent Criminals People Not Sound on the Fundamentals: Ronald S. Webb, 22, was arrested for fraud in Paris, Tenn., in December after presenting a pharmacy with a legitimate prescription, to which had been conspicuously added the narcotic hydrocodone, in a different color ink. And Vincent Festa, 44, was arrested at a Radio Shack in Oyster Bay, N.Y., in December when he attempted to return for refund a computer and about $1,500 in other “Christmas gifts” but which, according to police, he had loaded in his car a week earlier at the same store and driven off without paying for.

Update News of the Weird last reported on “furries” in 2001, after 400 of them gathered at a convention in Chicago, but the TV show “CSI” recently featured a similar convention as backdrop for a show, and the number of their practitioners has grown, with 1,700 attending “FurCon” in January in San Jose, Calif., for a weekend of dressing as animals, assuming animal personalities, petting and scratching each other, and even, after hours, engaging in what one called “cross-species mating.” An estimated 300 were in full-body makeup (with lions, tigers and foxes popular) while most others wore partial outfits (a tail or perhaps whiskers or ears). At the annual Muslim “stone the devil” ritual near Mecca in January, clerics had feared a repeat of 2004, when more than 250 people were trampled to death (among the 2 million in attendance), but fatalities dropped to the average level this year (just three, according to one report) after larger targets were installed so that participants did not have to get so close to stone them. On the other hand, in the same week, an annual Hindu goddessworship ritual in Maharashtra state in India resulted in as many as 300 deaths when a fire broke out in a roadside stall near the Mandhar Devi temple, provoking a stampede. ◗

• A TIP TO POLICE LED TO THE ARREST of a Savannah man wanted on 20 counts of check fraud. Officers proceeded to 1712 Reynolds Street. After knocking on the door, an adult female answered stating, “Jerome ain’t here,” but the officer saw the subject get up from behind her and walk to the rear of the house. The female was told that the officer “had just seen the suspect when she answered the door, that there were multiple warrants for his arrest and that hindering the arrest of the suspect was a crime.” Still the woman refused. Officers entered the residence, along with a K-9 Officer and his canine partner, Nick, who alerted to an area under a raised bed in the rear of the residence. When the suspect realized the dog was at his heels he yelled, “I’m coming out.” In addition to the charges against the man, the woman who obstructed officers was

There’s not much to say about this bizarre turn of events except, “DAMN, I wish I wasn’t showing a movie Wednesday night!” It’s not even every decade that Donovan even plays a string of live dates in the states, let alone on such a high profile tour. I’m told that rather than a standard support slot, he’ll actually play in the middle of the show, and John Mellencamp will join him for a few numbers before resuming his own set – so if all you care about is hearing “Rumble Seat,” don’t try to skip ol’ Mr. Leitch and get their fashionably late. Anyone with even a passing interest in psychedelic music, the folk revival or spiritual illumination should try and make this gig. Wed., 8 pm, The Savannah Civic Center .

FOR SEVENTEEN DAYS starting March 18, Savannah will play host to dozens of acclaimed musical artists. Most are nationally-known, and many enjoy enviable reputations worldwide. Originally called Savannah Onstage, and now known as The Savannah Music Festival, the scope, draw and public profile of this annual showcase have grown by leaps and bounds over the past three years. With 85 events on tap (24 of which are free to the public), it’s simply impossible for us to mention every show (for a comprehensive list, check out www.savannahmusicfestival.org), but we can offer a few suggestions in our next three issues for gigs you might want to take in - assuming both time and money are an object in your household. I mean, if given the chance, most of us would likely skip work, board the pets, pawn the kids off on Grandma, and settle in for the long haul. But, if shirking responsibilities and blowing your mortgage payment is out of the question, these picks may narrow things down. If something strikes your fancy, call the Trustees Theater Box Office at 5255050, or use that website to score tickets – but don’t delay, as many will sell out soon...

This protegé of the late Muddy Waters is considered by many to be the finest living exponent of the Chicago blues. In the course of his five-decadelong career, he has served apprenticeships, shared stages, and cut records with two fistfuls of icons, including Junior Wells, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Eric Clapton, Koko Taylor, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He’s a multiple Grammy winner who was famously named by Jimi Hendrix as that late superstar’s favorite blues guitarist. Known as much for his deep and nuanced vocals as his fiery leads, he’s one of the last true links to the golden age of postwar blues. He hasn’t played Savannah in over a decade, so this is a dream come true for local blues fans. Fri., 9 pm, Trustees Theater.

Roundhouse Jam Executive and Artistic Director Rob Gibson has a soft spot for jam-bands, and it shows in his enthusiastic embrace of this loose-limbed style of improvisatory (and sometimes psychedelic) roots-rock. This time around, downtown’s rustic, cavernous train depot, The Roundhouse, is the setting for what’s sure to be a popular draw for both young and old alike. This lengthy, freeform quadruple bill features stalwarts like guitarist Col. Bruce

Hampton (of infamous ‘60s freak-rock ensemble The Hampton-Grease Band) and his Codetalkers – with their special guest, Jimmy Herring (lead guitarist with The Dead), and Blueground Undergrass, a pioneering act featuring the Rev. Jeff Mosier’s mesmerizing banjowork. Also on hand: Savannah’s own Perpetual Groove, themselves rising stars on the national jam scene, and Norwegian percussionist Hans-Kristian Sorensen, who’ll play solo. Sat., 6 pm, The Roundhouse Complex.

James Moody’s 80th Birthday This Savannah native is a highly respected figure in the jazz community – having played extensively with Dizzy Gillespie’s bebop orchestra, and later with Miles Davis, Max Roach, Lionel Hampton and other innovators of the form. For this celebration (on his actual birthday, no less), he’ll perform on both sax and flute, and serve as guest of honor and master of ceremonies, Also on hand will be a knockout octet, including brothers Jimmy, Pearcy and Tootie Heath (on sax, bass and drums, respectively). For this show, trombonist Slide Hampton will premiere a brand-new piece which he has composed specifically for this joyous occasion. Any serious jazzbo would be tickled pink for a seat at this summit meeting. Sat., 8:30 pm, Lucas Theater.

Porter-Batiste-Stoltz Seminal New Orleans session group The Meters were the closest thing the Crescent City had to Booker T. & The MG’s. Their infectious grooves provided the greasy, polyrhythmic backbone behind everyone from Professor Longhair and Dr. John to Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer. When they split in the late ‘70s, some started a little band you might have heard of called The Neville Brothers. But, in the ‘90s, bassist George Porter and drummer Russell Batiste regrouped as The Funky Meters, and eventually welcomed former Bob Dylan session guitarist Brian Stoltz into the fold. Together they represent a direct link to the origins of swampy Creole dance music – so what better place for them to play a couple of club sets than this subterranean nightspot owned by the folks behind the sorely-missed eatery Orleans Brick Oven? This should be the late-night place to be. Sat., 11 pm + Sun., 1 am, Jazz’d Tapas Bar. ◗

make their businesses more costeffective, more efficient and more productive,” Bush said in a recent speech at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “The truth of the matter is, health care hasn’t.” The government wants more hospitals to look like the Cleveland Clinic, or like Atlanta’s Piedmont Community Hospital. Four years ago, Piedmont embarked on a massive technology upgrade. Today, Piedmont physicians can access electronic patient records from anyplace they can log on to the Internet. Medications are ordered electronically from the hospital’s pharmacy, where they’re dispensed by a robot and wrapped in bar-coded packages. Nurses use handheld computers to match up the bar codes on the medications with bar codes on patient ID bracelets and their own ID cards. The result: The time to dispense drugs or treatments at Piedmont has been cut by more than an hour, according to hospital officials. Medicine-related mistakes have almost been eliminated. And doctors can spend more time with patients instead of searching for paperwork, said Dr. William McClatchey, Piedmont’s chief medical information officer. ◗

Dr. Mark Blatt, a family practitioner for 20 years before becoming manager of health strategies for Intel Corp. President Bush wants to spend millions on grants and other incentives to establish a nationwide electronic health record system within 10 years that would help doctors track and share information on every U.S. citizen. Under the Bush plan, if a resident of Atlanta got sick while visiting Austin, an emergency room doctor there could use the Internet to access the patient’s medical records back in Georgia. Even more immediately, electronic medical records could substantially reduce the estimated 45,000 to 95,000 deaths each year due to medical errors, according to the White House. Many of those fatal errors stem from simple mistakes like the dispensing of wrong medicines because of sloppy handwriting. Additionally, such a system could save $140 billion a year by reducing administration costs, duplicative care and other problems, according to the federal Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, an agency created by Bush last April. “Look, most industries in America have used information technology to

“And the upside ... is all in front of us,” North said. Just how potentially big the health care industry is to tech companies was obvious at a recent gathering of hospital administrators in Dallas. Some 700 tech companies showed off goods at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference. Speakers at the meeting and at related events included high-tech heavyweights such as Intel Chief Executive Craig Barrett, Sun Microsystems Chairman Scott McNealy and Cisco Systems CEO John Chambers. “This is an industry that represents 15 to 16 percent of the economy,” said Dr. Jeffrey Rideout, who was hired by Cisco last year to revamp its health care division. “We’re very committed.” Less than 15 percent of doctors currently use high-tech tools like electronic medical records or electronic ordering systems, according to surveys. In the health care industry, “we’re kind of just moving into the late 1980s,” said

HEALTH-CARE PROVIDERS ARE being dragged into the digital age, whether they like it or not. While hospitals and health clinics have long relied on the latest technology in laboratories and operating rooms, new gadgets and networks are also emerging to improve administrative practices and the day-to-day business of healing the sick. Helping drive the change are a White House push to computerize patient records and the need to improve efficiency. Technology companies, seeing a new pool of untapped profits, are more than happy to help. “We think the market is very vigorous right now,” said Hardy North, director of health care programs at Dell Inc. He’s one of about 140 people at the computer maker who focus exclusively on the health-care market. In the past few years, Dell has gone from a virtual non-player in the insider business of health care to the biggest computer-industry player in the market.

SCAD grad designs bottle for new ‘energy beer’ making its local debut this week WHAT COULD BE BETTER on St. Patrick’s Day than a cold beer in a green bottle? That would be a cold beer in a green bottle with caffeine, vitamins and herbal supplements added for good measure. Just such a brand of “energy beer,” Mobius, has hit Savannah in the past week, now being offered at The Jinx, Ibiza, Elyseum and Churchill’s, with more to come. While a taste test of the new “infused lager” puts it on par with Beck’s and Heineken, Mobius offers the beer connoisseur a new twist to go along with its five percent alcohol level. “It gives you everything Red Bull gives you, plus alcohol plus ginseng,” says Rob Spencer, self-described “energy beer herald” for the Charlestonheadquartered company that makes the beer, Beverage Mobius Limited. But it’s not as simple as just pouring those ingredients into some home brew, he says. “It’s really a complicated infusion. It has to be a two-part process,” Spencer says.

There’s hangoverthe business who sperelieving thiamine, othcialize in taking unwanted erwise known as Vitamin flavors out of things. As we go to press, Mobius is available locally at The Jinx, Ibiza, Elyseum and Churchill’s. Expect it in local package stores soon. For more info go to www.mobiusbeer.com

CLUES I’M SO FAR FROM A BEER CONNOISSEUR it’s pathetic. But that doesn’t stop me from drinking beer on brewsaturated St. Patrick’s Day. My formal beer knowledge is limited to the few tidbits gleaned from hanging out with two beer snob friends whose man-purse doubles as a cooler for craft beer. After months of drunken observation, and many slurred debates over which alcohol rules, I realized our two camps — wine and beer — aren’t as far apart as we think. Beer people talk about hops, malt and yeast— we talk about grapes and yeast. Beer people ponder bitterness, while we ponder tannins and acidity. We both savor chocolate flavors, coffee and aftertastes, and both liberally use the word “full-bodied” without getting horny. So maybe we can build a bridge so that those beer holidays pass without a wine craving? With the proliferation of small, craft-brewed American breweries, it’s easier than ever — just stop by a local brew pub to try the array of diverse beers available these days. If you’re a fan of light, crisp sauvignon blancs, taste a Pilsner; a golden, malty, and well-hopped lager (a generic name for pale, cold-fermented, cold-aged beer). The world-famous lightbodied Pilsner originated in the town of Plzen in the Czech Republic in the mid19th century, and first arrived in the U.S. in the 1850s. Budweiser and Coors are examples of American Pilsners (although these aren’t considered craft-brewed beers). Chardonnay drinkers, along with anyone who enjoys full-bodied chenin blanc or dry Riesling should appreciate a crisp India Pale Ale (IPA) or smooth wheat beer. Pale ale, medium-bodied and aromatic with hops, is surprisingly not that pale — it’s amber to slightly reddish in color. Wheat beer, which you might have seen garnished with a lemon or orange slice, is a light-bodied ale made from malted wheat. While it is light and highly

Some tips on trading beer for wine… for a day

effervescent, wheat beer has a unique characteristic of tartness. Blue Moon Belgian White Ale and Hoegaarden White Beer are examples of wheat beer. People who like wine with a little oomph like cabernet or zinfandel might enjoy the heavier, higher alcohol brews available — porter and stout. This is where the chocolate and coffee thing comes in, often on the finish or when you first taste the foam. Guinness, the infamous, robust Irish brew with a creamy head on it, is an example of a stout. Porter tastes a little lighter but is still a dark, malty ale. For those uninitiated beer drinkers, I’ve squeezed a few tips from my beer people so you can drink without embarrassing yourself: • Don’t drink good beer from the bottle. Beer, like wine, needs to have contact with the air to allow its flavors and aromas to evolve. • Forget the frosted mugs, which cool the beer down to a temperature that doesn’t allow you to enjoy the full flavor of beer and can form ice crystals, resulting in watered-down beer. • Take the time to enjoy a fine beer: Pour it gently, savoring the aromas that are released as it flows into the glass. Hold the beer up to the light to admire the colors, then sip it slowly, moving it around your tongue to experience the beer’s body and flavor. Swallow the beer slowly to assess the finish: Does the bitterness at the back of your tongue balance the malt sweetness? Sound familiar? If your beer appetite is stirred, go online to beeradvocate.com or realbeer.com to learn more. ◗

If ever a movie warranted the Second Coming of silent cinema, it’s this animated effort from the same studio (20th Century Fox) and director (Chris Wedge) that brought us the middling Ice Age. Visually, the film is yet another triumph for computer programmers, as their blood, sweat and bytes have enabled them to create a wondrous landscape that’s a joy to behold. But whenever any of the metallic characters that populate this world open their mouths, it’s like listening to rusty bolts across a chalkboard. That’s because these ‘bots are apparently programmed to deliver only two types of dialogue: wisecracks that reveal an obsession with bodily functions (who knew that robots could break wind?) and flat speeches that have already been endlessly recycled from far superior kid flicks. Robots’ rote storyline centers on young Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor), who journeys from his tiny

Fender. Brooks, so cheerful a personality that even a documentary on the Depression would seem like a laugh riot were he tapped to narrate it, provides a spirited reading for his role, and his genuine warmth and obvious enthusiasm are a real boon. Williams, on the other hand, comes across as little more than a trained seal, balancing the ball on his nose when commanded but investing little beyond the physical action. Sad to say, he’s become as mechanical as the robot he portrays.

Maybe it’s because it was produced by his own company, Cheyenne Enterprises. Or maybe it’s because the part of his character’s imperiled daughter is played by his real-life daughter, Rumer Willis. Or maybe it’s simply because he’s been slumbering too long. Whatever the reason, Bruce Willis has woken up in time to deliver a committed performance in this adaptation of Robert Crais’ novel. Opening with a stylized, eye-popping title sequence that might lead viewers into thinking they’re catching an early sneak of the new Batman flick, Hostage then settles into familiar crime territory with the introduction of Willis as Jeff Talley, an LAPD hostage negotiator whose botching of a tense standoff leaves him with innocent blood on his hands and prods him into moving to a sleepy community where the crime rate hovers around zero. But once three ruffians attempting to steal a car end up killing a police officer and subsequently taking a family hostage, Talley finds himself back in the sort of situation he would like to avoid. For a good while, director Florent Siri and scripter Doug Richardson do their pulpy material proud, with a real attention to both exposition and execution. But as the storyline gets more crowded (another gang of villains ends up holding Talley’s own family hostage), the attention shifts from individual char-

acter detail and psychological chess matches to outlandish developments and ludicrous resolutions to the various plot strands.

is no Frank, and a promising cast is largely left to flounder in the middle of a movie that never provides a compelling argument for its own existence. DeVito is pushed out after one brief scene, while Travolta often seems like an extra in his own story. The cast includes Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel and Cedric the Entertainer, yet the most creative acting comes from Vince Vaughn as a thug who fancies himself black and The Rock as his gay bodyguard.

DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN ✰✰1/2

The gorgeous Kimberly Elise (The Manchurian Candidate) gets to display her acting chops as Helen McCarter, who’s stunned when her husband of 18 years, a prominent Atlanta lawyer (Steve Harris), demands a divorce and forcibly throws her out of their mansion to make room for his gold-digging girlfriend (Lisa Marcos). A huge hit with AfricanAmerican audiences, Tyler Perry’s play has been adapted (by the author himself) into a movie that’s overflowing with positive Christian ideals as well as an honest assessment of the intrinsic desire for seeking retribution versus the spiritual need for giving absolution.

CONSTANTINE ✰✰

From the connotations of its hero’s name (Constantine was the Roman emperor who endorsed Christianity more for personal gain than for any spiritual fulfillment) to depictions of Hell that borrow heavily from the works of Hieronymus Bosch, Constantine tries hard to include heady material that will allow for postscreening discussions around the water cooler or in cinephile trades (something The Matrix accomplished masterfully with its rampant theology). But as was the case with the muddled Jacob’s Ladder, Constantine never brings its debates into focus, choosing instead to

pile on its issues like so many toppings onto a baked potato.

HITCH ✰✰1/2

A warm and witty comedy that unfortunately runs itself into the ground during its final act, the picture benefits immeasurably from the presence of Will Smith, who may or may not be a great actor but who is most assuredly a great movie star. He's at turns sly, suave and sexy as Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, who bills himself as the Date Doctor because of his ability to make a living by advising other men how to land the woman of their dreams. He finds his biggest challenge in the form of Albert (Kevin James), a clumsy, overweight accountant who's hopelessly under the spell of beautiful super-model Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). But Hitch unexpectedly finds his own romantic inclinations rising to the surface once he meets Sara Melas (Eva Mendes). Mendes, who's always come across as a Jennifer Lopez who can't act -- no, wait, that would still make her Jennifer Lopez - initially has trouble keeping pace with a leading man prettier than she is, but ends up holding her own.

MILLION DOLLAR BABY

✰✰✰✰

Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) runs The Hit Pit, a boxing gym located in downtown Los Angeles, with the help of his only friend, Scrap (Unforgiven co-star Morgan Freeman). Scrap serves as the facility's caretaker, yet in his day he was a plucky fighter with a lot of promise, a quality he instantly spots in the young girl who wanders into the gym intent on becoming a champion boxer. Her name is Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank), and, as Scrap notes at one point during the film's effective voice-over narration, "Maggie grew up knowing one thing: She was trash." Up until this point, Million Dollar Baby contains all the familiar trappings of

crowd-pleasers like Rocky and The Karate Kid. Yet what makes this portion of the film soar is the attention to character that's provided by Eastwood (as director) and scripter Paul Haggis (adapting short stories from F.X. Toole's critically acclaimed book Rope Burns).

SIDEWAYS ✰✰✰1/2

The key scene in Sideways arrives when Miles (Paul Giamatti), a lovable loser who collects unhappy memories the way some people collect stamps, cuts through his own haze of despair long enough to open up to Maya (Virginia Madsen), who like Miles is a divorced individual with a great passion for wine. Moved by Miles' sincerity, she launches into a lovely monologue in which she links all wine to all people by pointing out its complexities, its ability to evolve… and its tendency to go downhill after it reaches its peak. And then she adds the exclamation point -"And it tastes so fucking good!" That term of profane enthusiasm might also be an apt way to describe Sideways, an offbeat road movie that averages more memorable moments per mile than just about any other picture released this year. Uncork it, give it time to breathe, and then luxuriate in its rich, heady flavor.

THE AVIATOR ✰✰✰1/2

Rather than trying to cram an overstuffed life into one motion picture, Director Martin Scorsese and writer John Logan instead have chosen to focus on Howard Hughes’ anecdote-rich period from the late ‘20s through the late ‘40s. This time frame allows Scorsese ample opportunity to bask in the glow of his movie memories, as this was the period when the billionaire industrialist (played by Leonardo DiCaprio, whose emotional intensity makes up for his less-than-commanding physical presence) decided to try his hand at making movies. ◗

The Art of Model Home Shopping By Patty Rietkovich, E.O. Home builders Association of Greater Savannah

Buying a new home is an exciting, and sometimes daunting task. Carefully shopping model homes before you buy can relieve the pressure of the selection process and alleviate concerns, before you begin building. The model home is one of your greatest assets in choosing floor plans and upgrades and visualizing your furnishings in the home. After walking through a model home, you will learn much more than you could have gleaned from a floor plan.

Use the Sales Center As a Resource

Before you walk through any model homes, stop by the builder’s sales center and find detailed information about the builder, homes, community and neighborhood. The sales center will have the overall site plan, and many times the builder will display a topographical map to give you a perspective of the entire community. From these resources you can determine the finished size of the community, which lots are available, and what amenities and community features are offered. Ask Questions of the Sales Staff

The sales professional is your link to the builder and your best source of information during your visit to the sales center and model home walk-through. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the homes, the community and even the construction. Sales professionals have information about the community, including schools and public services, and even nearby grocery stores and shopping areas. Study the Space and Consider Your Needs

Even though you may visit many model homes while home shopping, take your time. This is your opportunity to make smart decisions about your new home, so do not rush the process. During the walk-through, study all the spaces in the house. Visualize your belongings and style in each room to see if it’s a fit. Examine closet and cabinet sizes. Open doors and turn on faucets. Take the time to prioritize your wishes and needs and determine which upgrades you need right away, and what improvements you can make to your home down the road. Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Builders use some of the hottest products and appliances in their models. Delight in the care and detail used to decorate model homes, and happy shopping!

912-233-6000 w w w. C o r a B e t t T h o m a s . c o m TARGET THE BUYERS! Have you noticed how political campaigns target specific groups of voters? The needs of each group are identified and addressed separately, because politicians recognize that the voting public is not a single, generic person, but a collection of millions of personalities. Positions on Social Security are addressed to older generations, while tax incentives for business are aimed at corporate types, and so on. That strategy is known as “target marketing. When selling your home, it could be the single most important strategy implemented by your real estate agent. Buyers have different needs, just like voters. If your home has three bedrooms, two baths, a fenced yard, and is near schools, a family with young children

might find it attractive. On the other hand, if you own an executive home on the fairway of a golf resort, it is not likely to appeal to college students. When listing your home, ask the agent for details about the marketing plan used to attract buyers. Look for an innovative, imaginative approach to locating and attracting specific buyer groups. Ask what advertising or promotional vehicle will be used - newspaper ads, direct mail flyers, buyer seminars, brochures? What is the plan if the first approach doesn't

ĂœĂœĂœ°ĂƒĂ•Â˜ĂŒĂ€Ă•ĂƒĂŒ°Vœ“

yield results? Target marketing is an extremely effective method of attracting homebuyers, and no one understands the process more than a real estate professional.
