here’s more than sunshine to soak up at America’s first seaside resort, and it’s hard to take a step without bumping into this town’s unique history. One of the showplaces is Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington Street. This 18-room mansion is a perfect example of Stick Style architecture, and a must-see step back into the past for visitors, with a glimpse into the lifestyles of Cape May’s rich and famous on a guided tour. There’s a serene majesty to lighthouses, and out at Cape May Point State Park, you’ll find the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse, also fully-restored and still a working beacon for mariners. The lighthouse welcomes thousands of visitors each year who find it’s worth the 199-step climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the ocean and bay. A little further out on Sunset Boulevard is the recently restored World War II Lookout Tower. “Homeland security” is not just a catchphrase for the 21st century, as you’ll learn as you climb this tower, once used to help protect our shores against enemy invasion during World War II. Today, the tower also hosts two memorials: an inspiring Wall of Honor for local World War II veterans and an All Veterans Memorial for local residents who served their country. All three of these sites welcome visitors and offer ample free parking. These historic landmarks have been restored and are maintained by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC), which provides year-round tours and events that make Cape May such a great place to visit.
